NISSAN PATHFINDER: It takes a new change in direction.
Storypage5
A softer path for Nissan Pathfinder T
here’s yet more sad news for the fans of big, rugged, down-and dirty offroad 4WDs with the Nissan Pathfinder following the latest trend and being transformed into a suburban SUV with only mild dirt road capacity. For the first time since it arrived here in 1987 Pathfinder comes with the option of two-wheel drive and without the option of diesel power. Seven seats are now standard across the range. As with the latest Nissan Patrol the new Pathfinder comes with just a single engine / transmission option, namely a 190 kW 3.5-litre petrol V6 and CVT. The previous Patrol had the choice of diesel and petrol engines. Nissan Australia got around that problem with the Patrol by selling the previous model alongside the new one but has chosen not to do so with Pathfinder. While torque from the V6 petrol engine is well down on that from either of the outgoing
By ALISTAIR KENNEDY diesels there’s still enough (325 Nm) to cater for most of its new breed of users. The fuel economy aspect of the missing diesel engine will be partly-covered by the addition of a supercharged-petrol / electric Pathfinder, scheduled to arrive in the second quarter of 2014. Towing capacity drops from 3500 kg with the previous diesel model to 2700 kg, again suitable for the needs of most buyers especially as it is enhanced with Nissan’s switchable Tow Mode, to assist smooth out acceleration when towing. Fuel consumption is rated at 9.9 litres per 100 km with 2WD and 0.3 L/100 km more with the extra weight in the 4WD. In line with its changed target market new Pathfinder switches from body-on-frame to monocoque construction. The interior of new Pathfinder is spacious and practical. The two-seat third row is relatively easy to
access through large side doors although as usual children are the preferred occupants. Nissan quoted boot space with all seats in place at 453 litres, there’s also an underfloor segmented area. Three grades are offered, Nissan Pathfinder ST, ST-L and Ti. Each comes with the choice of 2WD or 4WD. The 4WD can be switched between 2WD, 4WD Auto (varies torque distribution between the four wheels) and 4WD (permanent 50:50 split between front and rear wheels for rougher terrain). Standard are tri-zone climate-control air conditioning, roof rails, Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, and tilt-telescopic steering wheel adjustment. For around $10,000 more the mid-spec Pathfinder ST-L adds electronic steering wheel adjustment; heated front seats; front fog lamps; twin sun roofs; and leatheraccented door and seat trim. Another ten grand for the topline Ti model
also includes the extra parking convenience of Around View which uses four wide-angle cameras combined with a virtual image of the vehicle to display a bird’s-eye view of its position and surroundings. Around View is available as part of a $2300 Option Pack in the ST-L models that also includes premium Bose audio with a 9Gb hard drive, satellite navigation and 8-inch monitor. New Nissan Pathfinder gets a five-star ANCAP rating, with safety equipment that includes six airbags with curtain ‘bags covering all three seat rows; ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist; hill hold; Isofix child seat locks in the two centre row seats; reverse parking sensors; and rear view camera. We’ve tested Pathfinders in fairly rugged terrain over the past 20-plus years but, in recognition of its new role, Nissan chose the benign conditions around Canberra for its 2013 Pathfinder launch program.

TOYOTA COROLLA: It was the number one selling car in Australia during 2013.
Biggest ever year for car sales in Australia By EWAN KENNEDY
D
espite all the doom and gloom being spread by the general media Australians continue to remain optimistic. Nowhere is this better illustrated than in vehicle sales. The official Australian statistician, Vfacts has just totted up the results for 2013, which show that 1,136,227 vehicles changed hands during the year. This is a comfortable 2.2 per cent up on the 1,112,032 sales in 2012, making it the highest year ever. There’s no single reason for the rise in vehicle sales, though there’s little doubt that extremely aggressive marketing played a major roll. We have seen not only price drops; but also cheap finance; reduced servicing prices, often capped for several years of purchase; and major incentives being offered by overspends head offices; and huge advertising campaigns. Number one marque, for the 11th straight year, was Toyota, selling almost one new vehicle in every five in Australia. Toyota sales were, however down by 1.6 per cent in a market that rose 2.2 per cent. Many of the Toyotas were made in Australia as Camry and Aurion continue to sell reasonably well

and bolster hopes that Toyota can continue to make cars in Australia. A big plus for the Melbourne Toyota factory is that many cars it makes are exported, whereas Ford and Holden mainly sell in this country. Despite Toyota being the top seller in Australia, 2013 was the first time the company could take pride in also having the number one selling car. Toyota Australia must really be regretting the decision to stop making Corolla in Australia and instead importing it from Japan. Toyota Corolla pushed Mazda3, which was in the central spot on the podium during 2011 and 2012, into number two place. However, Corolla was all-new in late 2012 whereas Mazda3 is in runout phase, with a new model due in a couple of months. Mazda Australia seems confident that it can get its ‘3 back to the top again, though it won’t come straight out and say so.

Toyota has just announced it will add a long-wheelbase Corolla sedan to its range midway through February, so there’s going to be a real battle in this market segment. Toyota HiLux ute was in third spot overall in the 2013 sales race, indicating the increase in confidence among tradies, as well as the continued strength of the dressed-up 4WD family pickup in Australia. Some buyers are paying close to $70,000 to get into topline four-door pickups loaded with extras - extras with weight that significantly reduce the load carrying capacity of the vehicle, but that’s another story. Holden was in number two position on the sales charts, but its virtually all-new Commodore launched midway through 2013, languished in fifth place overall. Ford Falcon was so far down the sales tree, at 17th place, so as to be all but invisible. A sad state of affairs for a nameplate that was king of the

market for many years. Number three marque in Australia during 2013 was Mazda, just ahead of Hyundai, with Ford in fifth. Fascinatingly, the biggest increases in sales were recorded by the Italian twins, Fiat and Alfa Romeo. Though they started from a low base, jumps of 651 per cent and 162 per cent respectively are still pretty impressive. Imports of Fiat and Alfa are now being controlled by head office in Italy, and the new Australian management team is pushing hard to make the brands part of the Australian mainstream, not simply niche players. SUVs continue to grow in popularity, rising 8.5 per cent, while passenger cars are down 1.6 per cent. Some 566,454 cars were sold in total, or just over half of the 1,136,227 total sales. It looks as though cars will fall below the 50 per cent mark for the first time ever during 2014. How times change...
There was a short section of smooth gravel while we were in the 4WD variant but not enough to bother switching out of 2WD mode. As is to be expected new Pathfinder is significantly quieter and more refined than before with little road noise intrusion. Being built in the USA and aimed primarily at that market the ride is on the soft side but, once again, is suited to purpose. The engine is the tried and proven V6 unit that we’ve driven in vehicles ranging from the Nissan 350Z to the about to be launched Nissan Altima. Nissan was one of the pioneers of continuously variable transmission (CVT) in this country and with Pathfinder they’ve managed to smooth out the revving fluctuations that have disconcerted some drivers. Think of Pathfinder as a sevenseat SUV rather than a 4WD and it all makes sense. There’s plenty of power from a gutsy V6 engine, excellent flexible interior space that allows it to convert to a two-seat van with 2250 litres of storage space. Those looking for something different may care to wait for the supercharged-petrol / electric hybrid Nissan Pathfinder that will be here by mid 2014.

Lexus reveals hot new coupe By EWAN KENNEDY
C
ommitted to being seen as a maker of high-performance cars, not simply silent saloons, Lexus has unveiled the hot version of its new RC coupe at the Detroit motor show. Lexus RC F will be aimed solidly at the Audi RS series, BMW M cars and Mercedes AMG mid-size models when it’s launched towards the end of 2014. Though based on the all-new Lexus RC coupe, there’s no surprise that the RC F coupe takes many of its styling cues from the Lexus LFA supercar. The RC F has its own take on the now familiar Lexus signature spindle grille, it has a subtle ‘F’ motif embedded in the mesh below the Lexus symbol, though you wouldn’t exactly describe the size and shape of the grille as being subtle. The bonnet has been redesigned, with a strong shape culminating in air outlets to assist cooling. There’s a big emphasis on aerodynamics over and under the body. Front-quarter ducts in the shape of an L (for Lexus) are a standout feature. Downforce is increased
LEXUS RC F: Aerodynamics are vital in a high-performance car and the Lexus RC F stands out for its visual aggression. by an active rear wing incorporated into the bootlid, it begins to work at 80 km/h, so even speed restricted Aussie owners will be able to get some benefit from it. We couldn’t resist passing on this crazed example of marketing hyperbole, “The all-new high back seats have been designed to resemble the look of tight-fitting athletic sportswear to support
and cosset occupants.” So, now you know. Lexus RC F uses a 5.0-litre V8 powerplant. Engine design is presumably still in its final stages, so all Lexus is saying at this stage is ‘power well above 330 kW and more than 520Nm of torque’. We feel the engineers are trying to squeeze at least 450 horsepower out of the engine
as 330 kilowatts translates to 442 hp. Power is taken to the rear wheels through an eightspeed transmission with Sports Direct Shift. Cleverly, Lexus has developed a Torque Vectoring Differential (TVD). That type of diff has been previously used by other marques for high-performance front-drive cars - where big
torque can be a real problem. The use of it in an FR (front-engine rear-drive) car is claimed by Lexus to be a first. Lexus RC F’s chief engineer, Yukihiko Yaguchi, explained, “I’ve built RC F to be enjoyed by all enthusiasts - no matter what their level of expertise. “There’s a misnomer that racing cars are hard to drive. “In fact, they’re easy in the right hands because they’ve
been purpose-built for the skill level of their drivers. “It’s the same with RC F. “Electronics can be modified instantly on board to provide appropriate levels of performance and protection. “But even at its basic setting, it’s a blast.” In its Standard setting the electronic differential provides a balance of nimble performance and stability. The Slalom is self explanatory and aimed at the most nimble steering response. Choosing Track sets the Lexus RC F up for consistent, stable behavior, ensuring the vehicle stays on the intended cornering line as the driver applies more throttle. Borrowing technology from its hybrid models, the Lexus RC F uses the Atkinson cycle at cruising speeds for lower fuel consumption, but then reverts to a conventional Otto cycle at higher revs to develop impressive performance levels. To maximise aural pleasure Lexus has developed a system that regulates induction and exhaust sound to help create a deep tone up to 3000rpm, and a higher-pitched tone as revs rise above 6000rpm. Sounds like the best of both worlds to us, if you excuse a crook pun.

Lexus ES line impressive L
exus has re-launched its ES Line of luxury midsized sedans after a break of seven years. The ES 300 was one of the pioneers of Lexus when it arrived in Australia in 1991, two years after the Japanese prestige brand was launched with the ambitious plan to take on the upmarket German car marques. The first Lexus model to come here, the luxury LS400 limousine, made an immediate impression as it was an all-new model, however, the smaller and cheaper Lexus ES suffered from comparisons with the Toyota Camry on which it was based, but which cost around half the price. Two further ES generations followed, in 1997 and 2001, but then, following a decision in the Japanese head office to cease production of right-hand drive variants, it became unavailable. Now it’s back. That ended late last year when the 2013 Lexus ES line, an all-new model built on its own unique platform, hit Aussie shores. Frontal styling is distinctly Lexus with its aggressive arrowhead spindle grille. The rear is more conservative. The ES 300h hybrid gets
LEXUS ES: This classy model is back in Australia, bigger and better than ever. a tiny bootlid spoiler to distinguish it from the ES 350. We loved the dashboard styling with its wide tapered ends. Controls are well-placed and easy to use with the exception of the ‘mouse’ controller that we find a bit too light in its movements. Two Lexus ES models are offered, one petrol the other a petrol/electric hybrid. The Lexus ES 350 is powered by a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine with peak power of 204 kW at 6200 rpm and torque of 346 Nm at 4700 revs. Lexus ES 300h combines a 2.5-litre Atkinson Cycle four-
cylinder petrol engine with nickel-metal-hydride batteries to provide 151 kW and 213 Nm at 4500 rpm. The petrol engine is mated to a conventional six-speed automatic transmission and the hybrid to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Published fuel consumption numbers are 9.5 litres per 100 kilometres from the V6 and 5.5 L/100 km from the Hybrid. As is generally the case our test figures during the launch drive program (around 250 km almost entirely on non-urban roads) were significantly above in the case of the ES 350 (around 10.3) and well above
INTRODUCING THE ALL- NEW ES The all-new Lexus ES is designed to evoke a richer sense of space. From the moment you step inside, you’re surrounded not only by advanced technologies and designer appointments; you’re immersed in a sensation of freedom and comfort. There is an abundance of headroom complemented by a tilt and slide moonroof. Rear passenger legroom and knee-room has increased, and a large boot design is capable of carrying more of the things that matter – from holiday luggage to golf bags. To discover more of what you can’t see, visit a place you can – at lexus.com.au ES 350 Sports Luxury model shown.
(around 6.9) in the ES 300h. Each of the two models comes in either Luxury or Sports Luxury packages. Standard safety features in all variants include 10 airbags; ABS brakes; stability and traction control; pedestrian protection system; tyre pressure warning; blind spot monitor; hill-start assist; and reversing camera and parking sensors. Optional in the ES 300h Luxury and standard in the other three models is the Lexus Pre-Collision Safety System that uses a grille-mounted radar to sensor to scan for a potential collision and then either alerts the driver or applies the brakes
depending upon the degree of danger. All models get leather seats; 10-way adjustable front seats; moon roof; Bluetooth telephone and audio streaming; dual-zone Nano-e air conditioning; and digital radio. Among the extra features in the Sports Luxury models are tri-zone air conditioning; power boot lid; wood grain trim (bamboo in the ES 300h); Mark Levenson audio system; rear centre console controls for a range of features; and heated rear seat. There’s much more so contact your local Lexus dealer for the full list.
The first impression in settling into the new Lexus ES is quality. This is a luxurious, refined and comfortable car that just oozes class. The seats are soft but supportive with rear legroom that matches the standard wheelbase Lexus LS. Rear seat headroom is fine for anyone under 1.9 metres. Lexus ES has few sporting pretensions – there are a number of other Lexus models to cater for buyers with this in mind – and is aimed at luxury cruising and commuting rather than anything exciting. Indeed it’s often driven by chauffeurs in the booming Chinese market by owners who can’t afford the big stepup to the flagship Lexus LS. Interestingly, the entry-level variant in the 2013 ES range is the ES 300h Luxury at $63,000. With the company targeting 50 per cent of its total Australian sales being hybrids this pricing will certainly help it along towards that goal. Adding to the comparative value the ES, like all Lexus models, comes with a fouryear standard warranty, although that is tempered slightly by its 100,000 km limit. The hybrid battery is covered up to eight years.
