NISSAN PATROL: The all-new Y62 combines luxury with on-road finesse and off-road ruggedness.

New Nissan Patrol moves into the luxury SUV field

N

issan Patrol is one of the bestknown and longest established nameplates on the Australian 4WD scene having been on sale here for almost 50 years. As popular as Patrol is in Australia we are well down the pecking order compared to the Middle East, Russian and USA markets and this led to a delay of around three years in the arrival of the latest, sixth generation, Y62 Patrol here with left-hand drive models taking precedence on the production line. Likewise, engine preferences from the same overseas markets led to the decision to only produce the new Patrol with a 5.6-litre V8 petrol engine. With prices of the Y62 Patrol starting at $82,200 and without a diesel option Nissan Australia has had little choice but to continue selling the previous fifth generation Y61 Patrol, with its 3.0-litre turbo-diesel and $50,000 - $60,000 price tag, alongside the new Y62.

By ALISTAIR KENNEDY Although it is capable of handling serious off-road conditions the new Patrol Y62 is aimed fairly and squarely at the upper luxury SUV market. Its 3500 kg towing capacity is far more likely to be employed towing a horse float or a luxury cruiser around town than working on the farm. Nissan has so far resisted the temptation to badge the Patrol under its own, Inifiniti, luxury brand although it does so in its North American markets. Patrol Y62 is offered in three grades. The entry-level ST-L and mid-spec Ti are each eight-seaters while the flagship Ti-L is a seven-seater with increased comfort levels. The big V8 engine delivers 298 kW of power and 560 Nm of torque, 90 per cent of which is available from just 1600 rpm. With that much grunt the new Patrol

can make the 0-100 km/h sprint in just 6.6 seconds. Fuel consumption is listed at 14.5 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined cycle using 95RON unleaded. Given that the Y61 turbo-diesel Patrol uses in the low 11s that’s a pretty impressive number, one that we were able to hover around during our recent real-life road test. The V8 engine is mated to an advanced seven-speed automatic transmission and a sophisticated, electronically controlled, allmode 4X4 system. In auto mode there’s torque split between the front and rear wheels on a 50/50 variable basis depending on road surfaces. The switch then activates 4WD high for semi-serious off-road conditions or 4WD low for the really heavy stuff. Four terrain options are available: Sand, Snow, Rock and On-road at the touch of a

button as are hill descent control and rear differential locks. Standard in all three of the Y62 Patrol range are Bluetooth phone and audio streaming; large format front DVD player; a 2GB hard drive music server with six speakers; USB connectivity; steering wheel audio controls; intelligent key access; eight-way power assisted driver’s seat; drive computer, dual zone climate control, front, side and curtain airbags, active front headrests. The $113,900 Patrol Ti-L gets satellite navigation; surround-view monitor; separate seven-inch DVD screens in the rear of the front seat headrests; a memory function for the driver’s seat, steering wheel and door mirrors; centre console cool box; Bose audio with 13 speakers; intelligent cruise control; xenon projector headlamps with auto levelling; power operated tailgate; and tyre pressure monitoring.

LandCruiser and, not surprisingly, it’s also heavier. There’s plenty of interior space and the sort of comfort levels that you expect from a vehicle that can cost in excess of 100 grand including wood grain finishes, an upmarket dash layout and high quality finishes. It’s functional as well and with all three rows of seats occupied there’s still 550 litres of storage space while by folding the second and third row seats new Patrol can provide 3100 litres with a virtually flat floor. On the road the big V8 engine is beautifully quiet and smooth – clearly an ideal long-distance cruiser where you need to transport up to eight occupants. Adding to the enjoyment there’s that distinctive throaty V8 burble under heavy acceleration. Handling is enhanced through Nissan’s new Hydraulic Body Motion Control (HBMC) on the suspensions of Ti and Ti-L models that uses hydraulic cylinders to reduce body roll. As with its luxury rivals there’s that contradiction with the new

Patrol of having so much offroad capability but having spent so much money that you’d be terrified of potential damage that you’re unlikely to inflict by challenging it. Nevertheless we did take it into a stretch of relatively steep bush tracks with some deep ruts all of which the Patrol absorbed with ease. The Y62 Nissan Patrol’s size does make it a bit of a challenge when parking and it might be wise to avoid cramped car parks and do a little more walking to your final destination. Having said that there are a number of parking aids such as a reversing camera, all-round parking sensors and an aroundview monitor. There’s also a powered rear cargo door operated by a button on the key fob. This latest model takes the Nissan Patrol into new territory. It’s the most expensive Patrol ever breaching the $100,000 barrier by some way and competing against vehicles such as the Toyota LandCruiser Sahara; Lexus LX570; Mercedes-Benz GL-Class; and even the king of the luxury 4WDs, the Range Rover. Big shoes to try and fill but the quality and performance is certainly there.

SUBARU: Styling changes to the latest Outback give it the rugged, semi-4WD appearance many buyers have requested.

B

Tougher appearance for Subaru Outback By EWAN KENNEDY

E

arly in 2013 Subaru Australia introduced the Subaru Outback with the option of a turbo-diesel engine mated to an automatic transmission. Buyers had been crying out for that economical and easy to use powertrain for years and sales jumped immediately. At the time we were surprised that the new Subaru Outback didn’t have many real styling changes. In hindsight, the budget went to the engine and transmission guys; fair enough, times are tough for all car makers and conservative Subaru has always put engineering ahead of appearance. Anyhow, the new edition Subaru Outback for the 2014 model season has been just announced and it has the sort of changes many potential – and

existing – Outback buyers have been crying out for. The modifications are extensive and are in some ways a return to the first generation Outback of 1996, giving it a rugged, semi4WD look. Changes to the Subaru Outback for MY14 include the addition of roof rails with integrated cross bars, side sills and cladding on the wheel arches, front and rear under body guard protectors and front mud flaps. These are complemented by a dark grey front grille, a black background to the headlights and dark grey alloy wheels. Customers not wanting the full body kit can choose to specify just the roof rails, side sills, dark grey front grille and alloy wheels, and the black background on the headlights. By doing so they get an Outback that leans in the direction of on-road station wagon. Subaru estimates this adds

$2500 of additional value, but that it has only increased the recommended price by $500 on each variant. The lack of a diesel boxer engine until 2012 held back Subaru Outback sales and then the lack of a diesel/auto combination meant it was not competing against rivals that had this sought-after pairing. Almost 95 per cent of all SUV sales in Australia have automatics. Since then we have road tested the diesel / auto Subaru Outback and were impressed with the operation of the CVT, in particular as it has been set up for those driving enthusiasts that don’t like the so-called ‘slipping-clutch’ sound of a CVT. With the Subaru unit, if you kick the accelerator hard the CVT jumps out of auto mode into one of the seven `steps’ that are the equivalent of gears in a traditional gearbox. The silly thing is that you lose

some performance by doing so as the engine no longer remains at exactly the right revs. But, hey, the customer is always right and if they want an engine to rise and fall as it changes gears so be it. In auto mode the CVT is seamlessly smooth. In manual mode, using the steering wheel paddles the steps have gear-like rapid changes, faster according to Subaru than conventional gearboxes. Not including we presume DSG transmissions. Driven at normal speeds the Subaru Outback 2.0D with the CVT is one of the smoothest and quietest cars on the market. Even driven hard noise intrusion into the cabin is minimal, even at high speeds on quiet country roads. The CVT has been designed to compensate for the narrow usable band of torque associated with diesel engines.

By DEREK OGDEN

ig and unashamedly bold in its shape the new Holden VF Commodore Ute is arguably the most sophisticated of its type ever sold in Australia. Our test VF Ute wasn’t the usual upmarket, loaded-with-extras model we get from many car makers, but the ‘get down and dirty entry-level variant’, the Evoke. It used the 3.6-litre SIDI V6 engine with an automatic transmission, and had a manufacturer’s list price of just $32,990. That’s a hefty $2500 less than its predecessor the VE Commodore Ute on which it is heavily based. The VF Commodore Evoke Ute comes standard with Auto Park Assist, front and rear parking sensors, reversing camera and remote vehicle start, the latter only installed in the automatic models. There has been some debate about whether the looks of the VF Commodore and Ute are different enough to the previous model. The VF Ute undeniably carries the Commodore DNA which accounts for this but there are enough changes to the front end to mark it out from its VE predecessor. Most of these are to do with weight saving and improved aerodynamics, leading to increased fuel efficiencies. In times when we are used to high-design all round, the exterior appearance is somewhat let down by 16-inch steel wheels. A completely new cabin design is built around the color screen positioned at the centre of the dashboard. The engine and transmission are backed up by a slightly lighter, more agile chassis for confident and predictable handling. We found there was less difference to ride and handling when it was empty or fully loaded than in many Holden utes in the past. A monochrome Multi Function Display, a 3-inch LCD screen positioned in the centre of the instrument cluster, registers vehicle and trip information as well as warnings and messages, including a consumption trend meter consisting of a bar graph setting out how economically the vehicle is being driven over blocks of 50 kilometres. Typically we used nine to twelve litres per 100 kilometres in the urban environment, coming down to seven to eight litres per 100 km on the motorway and in country driving. Whether working hard in loaded situations or dressed up to make a statement in today’s trendy ute market, the new Holden VF Commodore Ute handles things nicely.

BMW set to lauch its first-ever zero emissions car By ALISTAIR KENNEDY

B

MW is about to launch its first mass-produced vehicle to run solely on electric power. The German company is normally in the forefront of technology, but surprisingly, in this instance, is running behind the Japanese and Americans. The first vehicle to come out of the new BMW i sub-brand, the i3, is a compact five-door hatch that uses a combination of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic and aluminium to keep the car’s weight down to 1195 kg. Power comes from a lithiumion battery pack mounted on the floor of the chassis rather than within the cabin. While this pushes up the overall height of the car, giving it a semi-SUV look, it does provide a higher driving position. The electric motor generates up to 125 kW of power and 250 Nm of instantaneous torque that’s sent to the rear wheels. It allows the BMW i3 to get from standstill to 100 km/h in a sporty 7.2 seconds. Range is quoted at between 130 and 160 km, however, this can be increased up to around 200 km by using either the Eco Pro or Eco Pro+ modes, although these do impact upon the car’s performance and air conditioning effectiveness. By fitting an optional 647

cc two-cylinder rear-mounted petrol engine range can be further increased to around 300 km. The range-extender engine does not power the vehicle but is used solely to charge the batteries through an electrical generator. The tiny engine – it’s sourced from a BMW Motorrad scooter – is located beneath the boot floor and adds 150 kg to the weight of the i3, so slightly reducing the battery-only range. The range-extender would seem a natural fit for Australia’s sprawling cities, indeed BMW Australia is considering including it as standard. A big advantage of a petrol range-extender is that it can be refuelled in a few minutes. The batteries can be charged at home through a conventional 10-amp power socket (11 hours for a full charge) or a speciallyinstalled BMW i Wallbox (six hours). Fast charging stations are still a rarity in Australian cities but will grow in time. We were able to examine and sit in, but not drive, a preproduction version of the i3 at BMW Australia’s head office in Melbourne. The styling is quite distinctive with a sweeping rear roofline cleverly offset by a dip in the beltline at the base of the rear windows to improve outward

visibility. Entry to the back seats is through rear-hinged doors which can only be opened when the front doors are open. The resultant wide opening provides easy access and, with no B-pillar to intrude, will improve the driver’s vision. The traditional kidney grille clearly identifies the i3 as a BMW, although it is purely cosmetic – the range extender, where fitted, is cooled via a small radiator located next to the front wheels – and framed with a blue highlight which is continued on the door sills. U-shaped LED headlamps wrap around to the side of the car. Storage space is limited with 250 litres in the rear hatch area regardless of whether or not the range extender engine is fitted plus an additional 35 litres under the bonnet at the front of the car. With the batteries out of the way under the car the rear seatbacks can be folded flat to expand the available space to 1100 litres. Another standout feature is the wheels which although large in diameter (19- or 20-inch) are quite narrow to improve the car’s aerodynamics and reduce tyre drag on the road. Four design options are available: Atelier, Loft, Lodge and Suite with a choice of six colors,

all two-toned with a black band running from the bonnet across the roof to the bottom of the hatch. Like the system we’ve seen previously in the Nissan Leaf the BMW i Remote App allows smartphone owners to remotely display information such as range and current battery charge status as well as adjusting the temperature of the interior before entering the car. There are two monitors located on the dashboard, a small one in front of the driver that shows relevant charging and performance information and a larger (10.3-inch) one in the centre with the normal

BMW i3: The new model is a real head-turner. multimedia and navigation features. The second model to come from BMW i will be quite different to the i3. Not only is the i8 a sports

car but it is a plug-in hybrid combining a 1.5-litre petrol engine with a lithium-ion battery pack. We’ll do a detailed report on the i8 closer to its arrival date.

X-Trail sits somewhere between crossover and ‘real’ SUV By EWAN KENNEDY

N

issan X-Trail has been a major player in the SUV field in Australia for many years, so it didn’t make sense to mess overmuch with the basic design. Just revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show as a concept, but which we predict is pretty close to the real thing, the latest Nissan X-Trail sits about midway between a crossover and a ‘real’ SUV. Arguably the biggest change

X-Trail concept is the option of two extra seats to make room for up to seven inside. Whether this will make it to Australia isn’t known at this stage. Cleverly, the Nissan X-Trail concept has rear side doors that open to almost 80 degrees to make for easy access to the rearmost seats. Nissan points out this also makes it easier to get a child into and out of the child seat. This X-Trail has a longer wheelbase to provide greater interior length.

in appearance is the conventional shape of the taillights, rather than the very distinctive lights of previous generations that ran all the way to the roof. The nose has an interesting new design theme that carries sufficient cues to the current one to be classed as a major evolution rather than a revolution. That’s smart in a car that’s so distinctive that it can be recognised from a hundred metres away. The biggest news in the Nissan

As is common these days the Nissan X-Trail is built with either two or four-wheel-drive. Other than hints that the engines will be smaller in capacity and more fuel efficient nothing more is being revealed about them. No timing for the new Nissan X-Trail in Australia has been announced at this stage, but given the success of the Japanese company here in recent years you can be sure we won’t be very far down the waiting list.

CONCEPT: The next X-Trail will look like this.

Sebring has some good points By EWAN KENNEDY

T 2007 CHRYSLER SEBRING

he family car market in Australia is totally dominated by Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon, but from time to time other marques have a go at creating competition, usually without a great deal of success. The Ford Taurus was

soundly beaten by its cousin Ford Falcon during the 1990s. Chrysler had a fair bit of success years ago with the Valiant but it faded when Mitsubishi took control of the South Australian operation. Chrysler, now under control of its head office in the USA, had another bash at the market with the

Sebring from the year 2007 and it’s the subject of this Used Car Checkout. In a smart move, the Sebring came to Australia only in the topline variants as Chrysler was keen in giving it an upmarket image to lift it away from everyday competitors from Holden and Ford. However, the use of front-wheel-drive meant that it was lifted from its competitors in exactly the wrong way - perhaps we should say it ‘dropped’ from its competitors. Aussies do like their big cars to be driven from the rear. Chrysler Sebring four-door sedans were introduced in May 2007, followed by the convertible, often tagged as a ‘cabriolet’ to give it a European image in December that year. The cabriolet is unique in that it can be bought with either a traditional soft-top or a folding metal roof. The sedan is offered in Sebring Limited or Sebring Touring variants. The tag ‘Touring’ is often used by other makes to denote a station wagon, but is a sedan. Interior space in the sedan is good and the rear seat can cope with two larger than average adults, three children will travel in comfort. All seats except for the driver’s can be folded flat to make for plenty of carrying capacity, including long loads. Boot space is good always an advantage of a front-drive car - and the luggage area is easy to access thanks to a decent sized opening. All sedans until January 2008 had a 2.4-litre petrol engine that provides, at best, adequate performance. A V6 petrol engine displacing 2.7 litres became optional at the start of 2008 and is a much better bet. The added weight of the cabriolet body (due to the need for underbody strengthening) meant that only the petrol V6 engine is imported to Australia. It has decent performance so is worth hunting down if you’re looking for something really different. Another advantage of the V6 engine is that it sits beside a six-speed automatic transmission, whereas the four-cylinder powerplant only has four

forward ratios. A 2.0-litre turbo-diesel with a six-speed manual gearbox was imported from the introduction of the Sebring in 2007. It was withdrawn due to a serious lack of buyer interest less than a year later. Though Chrysler boasts the Sebring sedan has semi-European steering and handling to give it a sporting feel, it’s on the soft side for Australian tastes. In its favor, it provides good riding comfort. On-road, the dynamics of the Sebring cabriolet are better than those of the sedan and are likely to suit all but the most demanding of sporting drivers. Then again the ride is firmer and may not be to all tastes. Compromise, compromise… Chrysler Sebring sedan was discontinued in 2010, and as a cabriolet early in 2013. Though it’s a larger car than the Sebring, the Chrysler 300C is doing well in this country and some previous Sebring buyers have switched across to it. Build quality of the Chrysler Sebring could be better, particularly in the interior where it lags significantly behind that of Asian and Australian made family cars. Then again, the materials are of a good standard and seem to be wearing well enough. The Chrysler dealer network operates efficiently and we have heard of no real complaints about spare parts availability or price. Most of the Chrysler dealers are in Australian metropolitan areas, but some of the major country cities and towns also have representation. These days Chrysler is controlled by Fiat and is undergoing a resurgence in Australia. Insurance costs are slightly above average for cars in this class, but not unreasonably so. There seems to be a difference of opinion among insurance companies about premium charges, probably because the Sebring has yet to build up a comprehensive history here. So it pays to shop around for the best deal. As always, make sure you are doing an exact comparison between insurers.

Mazda 6 has given new life to mid-size market By EWAN KENNEDY

M

azda6 was launched in Australia in August 2002 and has had sales success since day one. Probably because it was a lot more stylish than the Mazda 626 it replaced. The second generation arrived in February 2008 while the gen-three Mazda6 reached us downunder

in December 2012 and again took automotive style to new levels. Mazda6 has crept up in size and the latest model is not far short of Aurion, Commodore and Falcon in its dimensions. The new model, sold from February 2008, has slightly more legroom in the rear, the 2012 model is larger than ever before and has decent rear legroom.

Back seat headroom in all models is good, though not overly generous due to the stylish slope of the roof. The station wagon has extra headspace over the back seat due to its extended roofline. An all-new unit using Mazda’s ground breaking SkyActiv technology makes the Series 3 an excellent drive. Mazda was in the vanguard of Japanese makers with turbo-diesel

It has a turbocharged version of the 2.3-litre engine to give it plenty of oomph off the line. It was discontinued with the launch of the second-generation Mazda6 series, a victim of its smaller, nimbler brother, the Mazda3 MPS. The Mazda6 is a quite complex machine so it’s probably best if you leave servicing and repairs to the professionals.

engines in cars. A Mazda6 diesel was sold from October 2006. At that time it had a capacity of 2.0 litres, this was increased to 2.2 litres, with a corresponding increase in torque in the 2008 new-generation Mazda6. An excellent model is the highperformance Mazda6 MPS, launched in October 2005.
