Building bounces back with 10.4 per cent rise Residential building approvals data for January show that activity in Victoria bounced back at the beginning of the year, said the Housing Industry Association, the voice of Australia’s residential building industry. The seasonally-adjusted ABS data released this week show there were 4846 dwellings approved in January 2014, an increase of 10.4 per cent on the previous month. This follows declines in activity during both November and December of last year. Growth in approvals during January was driven by a 13.3 per cent increase in detached house approvals, with multi-unit approvals increasing by 6.5 per cent during the month. Compared with the same month in 2013, total dwelling approvals have increased by 26.6 per cent. This includes growth of 36.1 per cent in detached house approvals and growth of 15.2 per cent in multi-units. “Today’s figures show that dwelling approvals in Victoria are

starting to see movement in the right direction,” said HIA executive director for Victoria, Gil King. “Residential construction activity in the state has suffered serious decline over the past three years, and it is important that the fall is arrested and reversed as early as possible” “We are encouraged that detached dwelling approvals numbers are strengthening, and we expect this area of the market to drive activity over the next few years.” “Multi-unit approvals have receded from the record levels achieved back in the days of the stimulus but remain quite strong.” “Despite the relatively strong result in January, Victoria’s home building market is expected to struggle this year. Latest HIA forecasts show dwelling commencements are expected to fall by a further 9.3 per cent in 2014.” “With the State Budget only months away, it is vital that government weighs in behind the sector.”
