HE has performed for enthusiastic crowds on massive stages in Canada and America, immersed himself in the vibrant melting pot that is New York and performed on the same bill with some of his idols on stage around Australia. But for Richard Perso, set to perform at this week’s Myrtleford Festival, living his life and making music in the North East is where his heart lies. It was the Yackandandah Folk Festival that first fuelled his passion for music, and it is in Yackandandah where he feels the most at home. “There’s something special about Yackandandah, it’s such a beautiful place and it’s always felt like home,” he said. The past few years have been a whirlwind of recording and touring for Richard, and he is continuing to perform constantly, while writing material for his third album. “It’s always an exciting process,” he said, admitting that making a connection with the audience was the ultimate reward. “When the gap closes between the performer and the crowd, there’s a certain atmosphere and emotion it creates,” he said. “We’re becoming disconnected, and music brings us back. “Without music, the world would be a scarier place.” During his time overseas, Richard was thrilled to share festival billings with some of the biggest names in music, including BB King, Bjork and the Dixie Chicks.

HOW the seasons fly! Summer is finished and its now early autumn, but the warm temperatures will be with us for a little longer. It still feels like summer, without the extreme heat, and the veggie garden is in full production. The plants still think it’s summer and with regular feeding and watering, will continue to keep ripening and producing for a while yet. But it’s time to think ahead to the winter veggie garden. Over the next two months, the days will become much shorter and the temperatures will drop. By Anzac day the night temperatures in the North East are low enough that heating is needed. And, hopefully by then, some decent rain would have fallen. The next couple of weeks are the ideal time for planting autumn and winter crops, while growing conditions are optimum. The warm days give the plants vigor to put on some quick growth and establish a sound root system before the temperatures cool and growth slows down. This is especially important for crops with a longer growing time from planting to harvesting. If you want to grow Brussels sprouts, get them in quick as they can

PRODUCTIVE GARDEN: Mandi McDonald with some of the fruit she has grown in her garden.

What’s in your garden: I work at Linga-A-While nursery and have lots of perennials, ornamental trees, fruits and vegetables and lots and lots of flowers. My garden will be part of a garden walk on March 13, along with two other local Moyhu gardens, and enquiries can be directed to me at home on (03) 5727 9469 or at the nursery on (03) 5721 8251. What do you enjoy about gardening: All of it – even the weeding! It’s relaxing and rewarding.

Favorite plant/spot in your garden: I have gardenia shrubs with beautiful perfume. Water saving/conservation tip: I use lots of mulch and also use tank water on the garden. Your tips to keep gardens in top shape: Spend a little bit of time each day to get tasks done.

take between 16-24 weeks to reach maturity. If planted too late the growing season will extend into spring and Brussels don’t set fruit in warm temperatures. Cauliflower and cabbage take from 10-12 weeks to reach maturity. Broccoli can take around 10 weeks, but the smaller side shoots can be harvested earlier. Beetroot, swedes, turnip and carrot reach maturity in 8-10 weeks but can be harvested while smaller to thin them out. Carrots and parsnips are more successful when grown from seed as they don’t like being moved. Parsnips are very slow to germinate but should reach maturity in 10 weeks. Spinach and silverbeet take around eight weeks to reach maturity, but are tasty when picked small and young. Onions take 8-10 weeks, with lettuce taking 6-8 and radish between 4-6 weeks. Carrots, lettuce and radish can be planted all year round, so get planting. Happy gardening.

Lily toxicity in cats

HELPING OUT: When he’s not touring, Richard Perso enjoys spending time in the Yackandandah community, and pitched in to help with the town’s recent Guinness Book of Records attempt for longest length of bunting.

However, his performing on home soil remains his greatest love “as there’s just something special about Australia and the music community”. Richard said the rise of social media in recent years has helped build his career and connect with his fans a lot easier – but there is no substitute for face to face interaction. That’s why he’s particularly excited about being part of the all-star line-up at the Myrtleford Festival, running from tomorrow until Monday, March 10. It’s his second time performing at the Myrtleford Festival, and he said there are fewer beautiful times of year to be in the Alpine Shire. “There’s just something about Myrtleford and about the area that makes it a real joy to play there,” Richard said. He’ll perform at the Myrtleford Piazza

this Friday of the festival, and other entertainers will include Amanda Baxter and Scott Solimo performing at The Lyons Club Festival Ball Friday night. Performers on Saturday will include West Beats (morning), The Home Hounds from Yackandandah and High Speed Steel from Geelong at the Carter Holt Harvey Street Party, while on Sunday the Rostrevor Family Picnic will include performances from The Grey Cats, and Rudi Katterl and Tracy Bonacci will perform in the Piazza. For all your Myrtleford Festival information and details of the massive event program, visit www. themyrtlefordfestival.com.au. For more information on Richard’s tour dates and career, see www.richardperso. com or search for him on YouTube or Facebook.

The Unusualist The Unusualist

THE lily is a very beautiful flower, but unfortunately it can be poisonous to cats even in very small amounts. Lilies are a very commonly given and received flower in bouquets and also as live plants in gardens. A variety of these plants can be toxic to cats including the Stargazer Lily, Tiger Lily, Day Lily, Easter Lily and Asian Lily. The actual toxic component of the lily has not been identified, but it causes kidney failure in even very small doses. Cats may also show gastrointestinal signs or neurological signs such as weakness or wobbliness on their feet. The toxin appears to be water soluble so drinking from water in vases containing lilies can also be poisonous. All parts of the plant can be poisonous, but the flowers themselves are the most poisonous part. The pollen which often falls from the cut flowers is also poisonous and may get in the coat of cats and be subsequently ingested as they groom themselves. Signs of poisoning usually occur within 6-12 hours of ingestion and begin with vomiting and lethargy. Increased thirst may be observed as the kidneys fail (within 24-72 hours) to concentrate the urine and water is lost through excessive urination. In more severe cases tremors or seizures may be witnessed.

There is no antidote, but prompt hospitalisation and IV fluids give the poisoned cat the best chance of recovery. Without treatment, mortality rates have been reported of 100 per cent. Beginning treatment prior to the kidneys failing will give the best chance of survival and recovery. As with most things prevention is better than cure. If you have a cat in the household it is best to not have lilies in the house or garden. Without exposure there can be no poisoning. Dogs can develop gastrointestinal upset from eating the above lily types, but do not tend to develop kidney failure. Peace lilies and calla lilies are not true lilies and do not cause kidney failure in dogs or cats, but both can create gastrointestinal upset (vomiting or diarrhoea). Still an odd cod about BY ROB ALEXANDER, WANGARATTA OVER the last week or two there has been a bit of a down turn in the Murray cod fishing in all of the local rivers. I fished the King River with Brett Corker on Thursday evening and we used hard body lures, spinnerbaits and surface poppers and never had a single touch. In saying that, our friend Joey Barca travelled up from Melbourne on Friday evening with the sole purpose of catching a Murray cod on Saturday morning – and he succeeded, landing and releasing a nice 50cm cod on a

Koolabung codwalker surfer lure just before sunrise. Former Wangaratta resident Wayne Love travelled down from Wodonga with his wife Cindy on Friday evening to do a bit of cod fishing. He also picked up a nice Murray cod on a Koolabung Codwalker. So a few cod are still turning up, but not as many as there were a month or so back. Last Saturday I was out on a photography trip with two mates and we discovered a new riverside reserve on the Mitta Mitta River. The Katie Peters Reserve is on the Mitta North Road and is a fantastic spot

to camp, picnic and fish. Sadly, Katie was killed fighting the Harrietville bushfire in 2013 and the reserve was opened in her honor. While we were there we saw an angler catch a nice brown trout of around 35cm on a Rapala minnow, and he told us he had earlier lost a bigger fish. So the Mitta Mitta River upstream of Eskdale is well worth a visit at the moment. The river is flowing strong and cold thanks to outflows from Lake Dartmouth, and the Katie Peters Reserve is just a wonderful place to take the family for a camping trip.

SOME time ago, a friend who is a regular reader of this column, commented that she was getting a bit sick of continually reading about the exploits of my dogs. At the time, I was a bit miffed as I couldn’t imagine why everyone else in the world wouldn’t be as enamored with my mutts as me, but I nevertheless duly took myself off to “Dog Writers Anonymous”, signed up for the 12 Sniff Program and took the Kibble Oath. I thought I’d finally purged myself of writing about the dogs. But nah. Not when I have the most gorgeous dogs who keep me entertained with their funny antics, surprisingly complex personalities and their hilariously poor grammar. Well anyway, this week I’ve been given pause (or paws?) to write about my dogs again, because a couple of days ago one of them (Scruffy Dawg) went missing. We’d had a painter at the house who had duly kept the dogs out the back while he was working and had taken great care to shut the gates. However, when the spouse arrived home from work, he let the dogs inside and they both bedded down for a little snooze under the air conditioner. Or so he thought. What he didn’t realise was that, as the painter packed his gear away in his van, Scruffy Dawg had secretly let himself out the front door and had wandered off. Of course, I went into a mad panic when I couldn’t find him. I checked the pool first as I’m always terrified one of them will fall in (I’m told that, tragically, one dog and a whole litter of pups drowned in the very same pool some years ago!) Fortunately, Scruff was not there, but that led to the next fear – that he was dead on the road somewhere. He is, after all, not the smartest of God’s creatures when it comes to negotiating traffic. In fact, I’d go as far as saying he has something of a death wish. As we walk across the main bridge, he always seems to pull away in the direction of the traffic!

BY CATHERINE WARNOCK It’s almost like he’s saying “I can’t bear this hellish life anymore! “Oh, wait. “What’s that you say? Juicy bone? Oh, okay… walk on.” In almost 40 degrees heat, I pounded the neighboring streets with an empty dog leash in hand, calling, whistling and scouring the roads, footpaths and yards while the spouse drove round and round the local area. I rang the Ranger, posted for help on Facebook and rang a few friends to keep a look out for him. We checked the track around the river, where we often walk and even drove to our old house twice, just in case he’d somehow managed to get across the river and was heading ‘home’. I stopped people in their cars and gave the Spanish Inquisition to a man having a quiet beer on his front lawn. But it was all to no avail. I felt sick and tried not to think the worst. But he’d been gone for over two hours so I knew something (or someone) was preventing him from returning home. The spouse kept insisting he was probably not far from home, but you never can tell with dogs. Once they get an idea in their head or a scent they want to follow, they can run for miles. But at least we were pretty sure he wasn’t dead on a nearby road. It was cold comfort though, and made me think of the other alternative – a Dog Napping. After all, he’s a very cute looking dog – and friendly. Not such a good combo if some unscrupulous person fancied a new pet. Anyway, after checking one particular street a couple of times, we decided to have one last look and, lo and behold, there he was! Stuck behind the gate in someone’s front yard (right across the road from Beer Man, I might add, which made me wonder just how many beers he’d had before I got to him!). Well, anyway, thank goodness the Scruffy Dawg is home safe and sound. Unfortunately for you, it probably means you’ll be hearing about him again at some stage. Apologies in advance.

Brown Brothers

Carrot cake with cream cheese frosting

2012 Limited Release Durif Around $21.00

WITH ANITA McPHERSON It’s one to park the nose over for a little longer than normal, soaking up the rich and exuberant berry fruit and notes of woody spice and fine cigar tobacco. This full-bodied wine has intense flavors of blackberry and blackcurrant, which are enlivened with zingy spice. It’s one I’d love to have a few cases of, so I could try a bottle at the same time every year and enjoy the exciting way it develops, but it’s great right now so that’s going to be a challenge. It looks like I’ll have to hot wire the cellar as well as the paddock. Visit the cellar door in Milawa or go to: www.brownbrothers.com.au.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

Death of Henry Tilt, 1896 THE death of Henry Ridge Tilt occurred on March 5, 1896. Tilt had resided in Mansfield, where he edited the first local paper, then in Wangaratta, where he continued as editor, also writing for the Chronicle under the nom de plume of “Odd Man Out”. Tilt had the reputation of being a vigorous debater and a splendid orator. He was appointed to the position of Truant Officer under the Education Act, and elected to the Borough Council, but there was some controversy over this in the light of his government position. He retired to Melbourne, and died at his Clifton Hill residence at the age of 69.

I AM sure there are many carrot cake recipes out there, but I tend to stick to my tried and true ones. I double the recipe to get a nice large one, you don’t have to do the same for the frosting though. Happy Baking! Method Pre heat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Grease and line a round 8 inch cake pan with baking paper. Using an electric mixer fitted with a whisk, beat the eggs and sugar together until it is thick and pale (about 5 minutes) Turn the mixer to low, and pour the oil, buttermilk and vanilla in a slow stream. Add the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and ginger and fold in with a rubber spatula. Stir through the carrot, walnuts and raisins until evenly dispersed. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and back for about 1 hour, until it springs back when pressed or until a skewer inserted comes out clean. Frosting Beat the cream cheese until light and fluffy, scraping down the sides of the bowl. Add the icing sugar and beat on a low speed just until it’s incorporated. Cover with cling film and refrigerate until required. Once the cake is cool, remove the cake from the pan and frost the cake as desired.

IT’S that time of year again, when the freezer is empty and the sheep are looking nervous. They’re gathering by the trough and doing a lot of muttering, like staff around the water cooler speculating on who will get the chop. One or two have even tried doing a runner, crawling guerillastyle under the fence and leaving a tell-tale clump of wool wrapped around the wire. At least the decision about who goes first was made a little easier this year, thanks to a few stroppy mates who were getting too big for their boots. Now we’re looking forward to getting them on the plate, and I’ll soon be enjoying my first lamb shank dish for the year with a glass of Brown Brothers Durif. This limited release Durif hails from the Heathcote vineyard in central Victoria, and has a glossy texture and dark, red color with a vibrant aubergine hue.

The sugar trap

A career change after you turn 50

WE add a teaspoon to our cup of tea, cups of it to our baking then we have hidden sugar in “fat free” foods, snack foods, packaged food, flavored water/milks/cordials and soft drinks. Fresh fruit also contains naturally occurring sugar. The benefit of eating a piece of fruit as opposed to dried or juiced (fresh or carton contains 8-10 teaspoons of sugar) fruit is the fibre. Fibre helps slow the absorption of sugars into your blood stream making the piece of fruit a better choice for energy production and blood sugar regulation. Consume up to two pieces of low fructose fruit a day such as kiwi, berries, grapefruit and honeydew. Regular and excessive sugar intake has been linked to attention issues, cancers, increased aging process, anxiety, headaches, inflammatory conditions such as joint pain, acne, insulin irregularities, diabetes, heart disease and obesity. Sugar has also been reported to be as addictive and preferred

over cocaine in animal studies. This addiction keeps us on a merry go round of constant addictions, blood sugar highs and lows and the increased desire for more and more sugar containing foods. Still think you don’t consume much sugar in a day? Try keeping a diary of everything you consume for the following week. Read every packet of food that is in your pantry, look at the gram weight and divide by 4.2 this will

give you a teaspoon amount. Include everything you consume in a day, mints after a meal, that biscuit you snack on while having a cup of tea, nibbles here and there while cooking and eating off your child’s plate. The WHO recently has been reported to reduce the recommended daily intake to 5-9 teaspoons a day or 10 per cent of your daily calorie intake. Keep an eye out for alternatives to sugar in the coming weeks.

IN my research this week I came across an article in my CPA publication where it talked up the possibility of a career change for the over 50’s. Last month, UK government Skills Minister Matthew Hancock caused a stir when he suggested men and women aged 50 and over seeking a career change should undertake apprenticeship schemes that would allow them to retrain as lawyers, bankers and accountants. But what he didn’t say was how newly skilled-up older workers were supposed to compete for jobs – even as their peers with a lifetime of experience in the chosen professions were losing them – against graduates fresh out of universities. It is accepted that more workers over 50 will choose to, or financially have to, follow a new career path to help them work longer, and if the word coming out of Canberra is proven to be correct, they will just need some new skills to take them to retirement as the pension age goes higher. So, how do we train these members of society whose need for training is vastly different to that offered to young people transitioning them from education to work? Convincing the employer to take on a 50 year old employee who has to be trained is a gamble. But any training should be geared specifically towards people who have lots of experience in the workforce and need to adapt their existing skills into the new environment. So, where do the divided camps of opinion leave those who are over 50, currently unemployed, staring down the barrel of it or simply treading water in career limbo? To wake in the morning and say “I think I will become an accountant” is one thing but will the goal be impractical? The obvious question to answer is “Why am I thinking like this anyway?” There are many online and off-line inexpensive training programs specifically designed to help equip people (of all ages) with new technical skills that could help them progress in a profession in

Commitment to their acquisition can help overcome some of the negatives a few younger employees have about older workers, and even from a purely financial perspective, re-invention through professional development in your present career will be less costly, draining and timeconsuming than trying to invent a new career. It’s a fact though, that a midlife career change usually has an adverse impact on personal income. Being realistic about probable cash flow – both during retraining and the years following – is vital. You may have to adjust your current lifestyle and may even have to consider downsizing your home. My advice to you would be that if you can’t afford to leave your current job and you don’t have to, why would you want to? The case for a potentially risky and expensive attempt at pulling off a midlife career change may not be as compelling if you take some time to consider alternative opportunities in your current organisation. Can you find a way to make your existing role more interesting, or even explore the possibility of secondment to a different area of the business? If you want to do what you had wished you had done when in your early twenties, look long and hard at the nuts and bolts of that profession as it stands today. It may be entirely different from what your thoughts were 30 years ago. And make sure you investigate with employment agencies or people you know who have been retrenched, the difficulties of the first hurdle to re-employment when you have turned 50 and how frustrating it can be to obtain an interview.
