WHEN people suffer loss and grief, they are on an emotional rollercoaster, feeling all kinds of extreme emotions and often struggling to regain personal balance and sense of self. These feelings are often magnified in the younger generation. And more and more people are turning to the internet and social media in hard times to express their feelings and share them with those closest. This need is at the heart of a new program being established by Uniting Care Goulburn North East for young people dealing with grief and loss, which has been dubbed “myrollercoaster”. Acting chief executive officer Liz Chapman said the idea came about because of the increasingly blurred lines between online and offline worlds. She said that many young people make no distinction between the two worlds, and counselling and support services need to evolve to cater for that need. “It made sense to us to figure out how to blend a service that works both online and offline,” she said. “We’re talking about major life issues.” Youth engagement officer Lisa Norris is passionate about helping young people and is excited to pursue the program. continued page |

THE veggie patch used to be a standard feature of every Australian backyard. Generations of families grew, ate and preserved their home grown produce. Thanks to rising prices and awareness of healthy eating, people are again looking for more sustainable practices and the backyard veggie plot is back in favor. Growing your own vegetables is not only a healthy and cheap option but a rewarding pastime and there is nothing better than the taste of freshly harvested vegetables, dug from the ground or picked from vines. As a passionate gardener one of my favorite things to do each day is to wander down to the veggie garden and pick ripe produce. A backyard veggie patch gives you the convenience of having instant produce, thus avoiding trips to the supermarket and saving money. At this time of the year summer vegetables are on the menu and the variety available is vast. Now is the time to plant Asian vegetables, beans, beetroot, cabbage, capsicum, carrots, celery, chili, corn, cucumbers, eggplant, herbs, lettuces, melons, parsnip, peas, potatoes, pumpkin, radish, silverbeet, spring onion,

WITH DEBBI GIBSON, HORTICULTURALIST

strawberries, tomatoes, zucchini, and more. For a continuous supply, plant new crops every four weeks. Practice crop rotation, which helps prevent the build-up of pests and diseases, by not planting the same crop in the same spot as previous sowings. Plant basil next to tomatoes to enhance the taste and help protect them from disease and insects. Garlic repels aphids and improves the growth and flavor of beetroot. French marigolds deter white fly and thyme attracts bees to tomatoes, potatoes and eggplants. Bees pollinate the plants increasing the yield. By following organic principles, like companion planting and composting, the use of pesticides and chemicals can be minimal or not needed at all. Find a spot in your backyard for a veggie patch. It’s good for your health, your wallet and the environment. Happy gardening.

Intestinal worm control BIG PLANS: Liz Chapman (left), Leah Waring (centre) and Lisa Norris going through plans for myrollercoaster.

“I want to get a feel of being a part of their lives, being somebody they can trust, so they know that I’m there and am not going to judge them,” Mrs Norris said. “I want to be a part of bettering people’s lives.” Project officer Leah Waring said as well as helping to provide an outlet for young people to access support online, it would also be a place for them to express themselves through creative outlets such as art and music. “We’re trying to tap in to be able to provide that,” Mrs Waring said. She added that with young people going through so many life changes, the service was aimed at supporting people not just through bereavement, but through relationships ending, changing schools, loss of identity, and more. Ms Chapman said that the service has involved the input of local young people since the beginning, including regular surveys. “I think of grief and loss as a term used when someone has lost someone. “It evokes sadness and a longing for

company,” said a survey response from one young person. Mrs Waring said local youth have added to a groundswell of support for the service. “It’s gone from a few young people, to many,” she said. “We’re bowled over by the engagement.” “It creates the opportunity for community to come together,” Mrs Norris said. “It needs to be done well, so people can feel safe in that environment.” The program is currently aimed at youth in Wangaratta, but Uniting Care Goulburn North East hopes to expand the program to help youth across the North East and in the Border region. The program, designed for young people aged 13-25 years who live, attend school or work in Wangaratta, includes an online booking system for counselling, a blog, and a Facebook page, as well as a range of upcoming public events around Wangaratta. More information on the program is available by calling Uniting Care Goulburn North East on (03) 57238000.

REGULAR de-worming of pets is important not only for your cat or dog’s health, but for your own health as well. Many of the intestinal worms of dogs and cats can infect people and particularly young children who often come into closer contact with our pets. The worms of pets include roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms. Puppies and kittens can become infected even before they are born as some worm infections can cross the placenta and others can be spread through the milk of the mother. Young animals often have clinical signs of worm infections such as a ‘pot-bellied’ appearance, failure to thrive, a rough coat, vomiting, diarrhoea, coughing or anaemia. Sometimes you may see worms or tapeworm segments that look like grains of rice in the faeces of your pet, indicating that they are infected with intestinal worms. Older dogs and cats, however, often show no clinical signs, despite high worm burdens. A regular de-worming protocol is important to optimise the health of your pet and reduce the risk of infection to your family. Each year many people in Australia, particularly children, permanently lose part of their vision due to infection with the common roundworm.

Puppies and kittens should be treated fortnightly until 16 weeks of age and then treated every three months for life. There are a wide range of intestinal worming products available, both from veterinarians and from the supermarket. Some products available from the supermarket do not treat all intestinal worms and others are only for the ‘control’ of worms, this means they are only 70-75 per cent effective. It is necessary to select a product that is labelled for the ‘treatment’ of intestinal worms. We recommend using a proprietary allwormer, available from a veterinarian for your pet as they are a highly effective and reliable product, so that you and your pets are protected from intestinal worms. CATCH OF THE WEEK

FISHING FOCUS

Countdown to cod opening THE last couple of weeks have seen little change in the fishing world across the region. So with cod season less than a fortnight away I thought I would share a few tips to help whet people’s appetites as we wait patiently for December 1 to arrive. 1) Like most native fish, Murray cod are largely nocturnal. This does not mean they will not feed during the day, it simply means that at night time they will travel further away from their hiding places to feed under the cover of darkness. So during the day, it is critical to keep your bait, or lure as close as possible to the snags and likely looking hiding places for Murray cod. Sunset is the best time of the day to catch Murray cod. 2) Think BIG. Murray cod like a large food source. They don’t forage around all day picking off tiny little minnows and nymphs, they eat carp, redfin and yellowbelly and very large yabbies.

Bait: CATCH AND RELEASE: One of Wangaratta’s most passionate and switched on cod fishermen, Brett Corker, is pictured with a protected trout cod which he caught after sunset last season. Sunset is a great time to target cod. Brett is counting down the days until cod opening.

If bait fishing, no yabby will be too big and if lure fishing, don’t let very large hard body lures scare you away. 3) Fish close to the bank. So often I see anglers walk up to a magnificent looking bank with lots of snags and cod hiding spots, only to cast directly over the top to the other side of the river because the other side always looks better. Most of my Murray cod

Hardbody lure, caught on a Curado bait caster reel.

The Catch: The catch, which took place during a recent fishing trip, took about 30 minutes to land, and Barry said it is the current record holder for barracuda catch size in the area this year.

are caught within a metre or two of the bank. Murray cod like to hold close to the bank where there is always cover, and where they can wait for something like a bird, a mouse or even a snake to fall into the river. During the day Murray cod will sit in the shade. The darker and shadier the better. There’s less than two weeks to go until cod opening, and I’m starting to get “Big Kev excited.

THE KITCHEN PHILOSOPHER

The green, green grass of someone else’s home

MOVIE

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire [M] KATNISS Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark, but must then embark on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) - a competition that could change Panem forever.

BY CATHERINE WARNOCK THEY say the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. And when, like us, you live right next door to a bowling green, there’s a fair chance that’s very true. But even if we didn’t live next door to a bowling green, I’m pretty sure the grass would be still greener on the neighbor’s side of the fence as, at the moment, there is not too much greenery on our side. As you may recall, we have not long moved house and have been busily primping and preening the new digs. We were fortunate to have inherited a quite well-established (albeit quite neglected) garden but there were a few glaring tasks that needed doing. The first was to remove the huge and ‘past its use-by date’ Melaleuca that was slap bang in the middle of the back yard and surrounded by boulders the size of the Devils Marbles. I’m told in its heyday this garden bed had been filled with lush azaleas and ornamentals and had been a picture. Not so now, after the years had taken their toll and a dog run had been strung across the middle of it. By the time we arrived, it was a large and ugly dustbowl boasting gnarly protruding tree roots and a thriving family of fleas. We found out about the fleas a few days after our arrival when Moses and Scruffy started competing in the Scratching Olympics and were driving both themselves – and us – completely nuts. Well anyway, the spouse took to the melaleuca with gusto. A man and his trusty chainsaw is a force to be reckoned with and within a few short hours, the bulk of the tree was down. A couple of trips to the tip saw most of it off but, of course, there remained the problem of the huge stump and repositioning the boulders. Even Chainsaw Bob couldn’t tackle that one on his own, so he called in the big guns (ie guy with bobcat) and with a bit of horsepower - and some grunting manpower - eventually the stump

Last Night at the Viper Room by Gavin Edwards PRAISED by his peers as the most talented actor of his generation, River came of age in the spotlight — a teen idol on the fast track to Hollywood royalty, a defender of the environment, and a proponent of veganism. Toggling between the tragic events at the Viper Room in West Hollywood on that fateful Halloween night in 1993 and the story of an extraordinary life, Last Night at the Viper Room is part biography, part cultural history of the 1990s — but, above all, is a celebration of River Phoenix. was loaded onto the trailer and the boulders were placed into their new spots. By the time I arrived home from shopping (well someone has to take care of the retail therapy) the backyard had been transformed. Where once the ugly, flea-infested tree lump had reigned supreme, there was now a nice flat area edged by a crescent-shaped, rock-edged, soon-to-be garden bed. I was impressed and set to work with the spouse on raking out what was to become the new lawn area. It was quite a task – albeit perhaps a little less taxing than hoiking boulders around the yard – but eventually we had it all levelled and ready to plant the lawn seed. That was last Monday evening and, in my usual impatient way, I began checking for signs of growth the very next morning. Nothing of course. This went on for an entire week and still nothing. The spouse and I would be out there every evening with the torch – on our hands and knees trying to convince ourselves that we could see something happening. It was pathetic really. Two grown people squinting their eyes and saying hopeful things like; “Oh, I’m sure I can see something. Can you?” “You seriously need to get a life,” commented number two son when we gave him an update on the lawn-status and hinted at our current obsessive lawn-watching behaviors (such as ‘researching’ germination timeframes on the web, watering every five minutes and reading up on the various grass varieties). “And whatever you do, don’t look over the fence,” he added. “You’ll only get depressed.” Well anyway, I’m happy to report that now, some 10 days after the initial sewing, we finally have lift off. And now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to rush out to check progress in the backyard. After all, I’d hate to miss all the action.

Ricotta and tomato tart

2012 Pinot Grigio Around $20.00

WITH BRONWYN INGLETON THIS tart travels well and is best served at room temperature. All you need is a salad for a light dinner or lunch. The pastry is a bit tricky, but worth the effort. If you are too unsure, then try to buy good quality puff pastry. Method: tart Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius. Place tomatoes in a colander, sprinkle with salt and leave to drain. Place pastry dough on a floured surface and roll out to a circle of about 35cm in diameter and 3mm thick. Place the dough on a floured baking tray. Place ricotta, eggs, cream, parmesan, nutmeg, salt and pepper in a bowl and mix well. Add rocket and stir to combine. Place the ricotta mixture in the centre of the dough, and spread the filling over the dough, leaving a 5cm border around the outside. Using your hand, lift and push the border onto the filling. Arrange tomato slices over the top of the filling. Brush pastry with the egg yolk and bake in the oven for 35-40 minutes until golden. Serve with chopped parsley and freshly ground pepper. Method: Rough puff pastry Place flour and salt in a bowl, add butter and rub through with fingertips until the mixture resembles large breadcrumbs. Add enough cold water, cutting with a knife to form a ball. Wrap in cling wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Roll out the dough into a 30x15cm rectangle. Fold in the two short ends to meet the

WITH ANITA McPHERSON a vibrant and fresh product of the Beechworth vineyard. It captures the essence of the variety in its pale straw color and fruity nose, which also has the bite and lift of lemon freshness. There also appears to be some honeydew melon and citrus in the flavors further down the glass, which adds to orchard impact, and this would be a cracker wine with unadulterated seafood. But Pinot Grigio is proving to be a favorite of mine while you’re just thinking of getting dinner on the go, and watching the birds enjoy theirs. THIS DAY IN HISTORY

Rutherglen Town Hall, 1866 THE foundation stone of the Rutherglen Town Hall was laid on November 20, 1866 by the mayor, Thomas Nott. Pioneer settler Lindsay Brown, of Gooramadda, handed the silver trowel to Cr Nott for the official laying of the stone. Perhaps the most remembered words from that occasion were spoken by Lindsay Brown. In his speech, he predicted that more wealth would be won from the first few inches of the ground than lower down. It was good advice, as the deeply buried gold was not to be the mainstay of the Rutherglen of the future.

IT would be wonderful to have an orchard and pick fresh fruit straight from the tree, if only the birds would leave some for me. I’ve tried a few different varieties and even tried to net them, but those clever King Parrots are as smart as they are beautiful, and I swear they can even untie knots. This year the loquat is heavy with fruit and the birds just sit there looking at me and talking to each other while they enjoy a long lunch at my expense. At least they eat most of the flesh, unlike the cockatoos who’ll hammer their way into a giant lemon until the branch breaks and the fruit hits the ground. I guess it is nature’s way, and if I have to get my fruit fix from the bottle than I can learn to live with that. Flavors of crisp apple and pear are a highlight of Indigo Vineyards Pinot Grigio, which is

Blood pressure and belly fat

Footprints across our continent

HAVE you noticed an increase in blood pressure after turning 50? Has your blood pressure always been fine, until about the time menopause started? Or maybe since putting on a few kilos your doctor is suddenly worried about your blood pressure? These are common concerns that I am hearing on a regular basis at the clinic. This issue of high blood pressure is a constant source of frustration for many, mostly because hearing the diagnosis means that you will need medication, and often this is the first medication you have needed and for you, medication for high blood pressure is like someone telling you that you are getting old. If your waist measurement is over 80cm (women) or 90cm (men) then this commonly central weight is a large part of your high blood pressure problem. The good news is that you don’t have to get it back to 80cm, often reducing it by 5-10cm will

By KEN CLARKE, WANGARATTA CERTIFIED PRACTICING ACCOUNTANT NOW the banks have all reported their full year reports, it is time to assess the results. For those of us who thought the last three years on the stock market had been great, take a closer look at the major banks and Telstra which shows them being streets ahead of the ASX200. Telstra especially (according to Lincoln Indicators) has had a return of almost 35 per cent over these three years with the Commonwealth Bank and Westpac going neck to neck in second and third place with returns of almost 24 per cent. Even the NAB has just topped the 20 per cent return barrier. But the S&P ASX200 is just touching the line at 10 per cent. Share prices are at the highest for five years and it is the major banks that are the drivers of the share market. Investors are finding the banks high and rising dividends irresistible compared to the interest they are able to generate for having their money in bank deposits. Banks’ share prices are 35 per cent higher than last year and of course they are all paying fully franked dividends. Fat Prophets’ senior research analyst Brian Han is cautious about the banks. He says investors are being unrealistic if they expect the banks to keep increasing their dividends year after year. Mr Han said big banks’ shares are valued at the top end, compared with their overseas counterparts, and their share prices have risen because there were few alternatives elsewhere in the market and their yields have been so good. Michael Heffernan, a senior client advisor and economist with Lonsec sharebrokers says bank share prices will not rise by 35 per cent next year, but he expects the banks’ profits will remain strong, with the economy expected to pick up next year.

kclarke@alphalink.com.au The CBA has long been the preferred big bank stock. “It has the best footprint across Australia and is more highly exposed to the domestic lending market than the other banks,” he said. In his opinion the other banks carry more risks for investors. The good news for the banks just keeps rolling along. The National Australia Bank (NAB) reported profit up by nine per cent for the year to September 30, while ANZ was up by 11 per cent over the same period. The NAB has declared a dividend of 97 cents a share giving investors a full year distribution of $1.90. ANZ will pay a fully franked dividend of 91 cents in December to make total distributions for the year $1.64, or a 13 per cent rise. The combined profit of the four major banks exceeds $27 billion this year, up from $25 billion 12 months ago. The Australian Prudential Regulation Authority has advised the banks to limit dividends to meet new rules that require them to hold onto billions of dollars more of their capital. A couple of weeks ago my paper was on the takeover offers of Warrnambool Cheese and Butter and I expressed an opinion there would be more to come. Well, Bega upped their offer, only to see Murray Goulburn late last week come in with a new offer of $9 per share cash. However, if WCB shares continue to rise as we have seen lately, then the Bega offer with shares may still be the better one. But it is not over yet I am sure.
