THROUGH almost a quarter of a century, Porepunkah couple Rosie Spicer and Travis “Trout” Wayth have shared their everyday lives, their early starts, their muscle strains and race finishing euphoria as regular iron man competitors. But over the past few years, the pair have also shared the anxiety of Travis’ chronic myeloid leukaemia. It was just after racing in the Kona Iron Man World Championships on Hawaii’s Big Island in 2011 that Travis became aware something might be wrong with his health. “I’m pretty in tune with my body,” he said. “I knew things weren’t right - I just thought my iron might have been down.” Although initially taken aback and worried about the diagnosis - as Travis lost his father to prostate cancer and Rosie lost her father to leukaemia - he has just kept up his treatment and healthy lifestyle, with a new drug currently keeping him in reasonable health. “I’ll never be cured...it’s just the treatment keeps things at bay,” he said. “It’s a matter of living with it and making the most of it.” With Rosie recently earning a legacy lottery entry in the upcoming 2014 Kona championships, for competing in more than 12 iron man races, the couple is hoping Travis will be given a “compassionate” entry to compete in the October 11 race. continued page |

What’s in your garden: Rhubarb, cauliflower, beetroot, carrots, parsnips, herbs, lettuce, oranges, lemons, apples, limes cumquats, olives, butternut pumpkins, tomatoes, spring onions, garlic, passion fruit, potatoes, egg plant, feijoas, broccoli. What do you enjoy about gardening: Potting up new plants, digging, getting dirty, planting, watering, pulling out stakes, taking care of mother nature, learning

about different plants, picking produce to eat. Favorite plant/spot in your garden: The hothouse, gazebo, chicken coup, carrot patch, cumquat trees, shade house. Water saving/conservation tip: Recycle hand washing water; don’t leave taps running; water that over flows from the tanks goes into the frog bog and then into the creek; reusable water bottles; timers on drip system; and all scraps

go to worms, chooks compost heap. Your tips to keep gardens in top shape: Using lots of natural animal manure; using worm wee to encourage growth; mulch to keep the moisture in; and keep rotating crops.

THERE is something wonderful about autumn. As the seasons change, they each bring a new dimension to gardens. Autumn is a time of vivid colors as the leaves on exotic trees undergo their gradual change from green to the fiery autumn tones in reds, oranges, yellows, burgundies and purples. The color of the leaves as they change is something only Mother Nature can produce. As a child, I loved walking through the carpets of color which covered the ground during autumn kicking up the piles of leaves and even though the calendar says my childhood years are long gone, it still brings the same pleasure. If you want to bring some autumn color to your garden, now is the perfect time to get out in your neighborhood and look at the autumn foliage on display and pick your favourites. By looking at established trees, you can also see how the mature trees will develop size wise and shape and whether or not they are suitable for your garden. One of my favorites is the Chinese tallow tree (Sapium sebiferum), which has heart shaped leaves and grows to around 8 metres, suitable for the suburban garden. The autumn foliage is crimson, scarlet red, orange and yellow. Another small tree with colored foliage is the Smoke bush (Cotinus

WITH DEBBI GIBSON, HORTICULTURALIST

coggygria), named because of the feathery, smoky grey flowers in early autumn, and followed by scarlet and bright yellow and orange leaves. It grows to around four metres and thrives in cooler regions. Most of the Maple family (Acer) feature wonderful autumn foliage. Acer palmatum has lovely dissected leaves which change from green to rich dark pinks and reds in autumn. They are available in many sizes, with varying leaf shapes and colors. Crepe myrtles have beautiful mottled bark which contrasts with the brilliant autumn display. The Claret Ash has deep red wine colored leaves in autumn, while the Golden ash features yellow foliage on yellow wood with striking visible black buds. And finally, another stunner is the Gingko, commonly known as the Maiden hair tree with beautiful buttercup yellow foliage. Happy gardening.

Expectant mothers

OUT FOR A RUN: Travis gets stuck into the marathon during an iron man event.

Rosie said they “live and breathe the iron man mantra, ‘that anything is possible’,” and that it would be amazing for both of them to be able to compete in the same race. “We’re just trying to appeal to their sentimental side,” she said. “It would be nice to do that event. “Hawaii would be pretty special if we both did it.” Travis said that while the relationship had been through a lot, the pair were as strong as ever. “We’re best of friends and we’ve got mutual interests – she’s pretty focused and determined,” he said. “We’re pretty lucky.” Travis admires his partner’s achievement of getting a spot in the Kona race and her ability to conquer her fears. “We’re just really happy,” he said, with Rosie chipping in that their relationship had stood the test of time. “We do everything together,” she said.

FOR THE RECORD: Iron man competitors must swim 3.86kms, ride 180.25kms and then run a full marathon of 42.2kms. Their training regime is among the most taxing of any endurance sports. “I class him as my best friend, my buddy, my soulmate.” The couple have built their lives around healthy habits and competing in iron man events. “You’re always racing against yourself and against the clock,” Travis said. “I still like doing what I’m doing, and I’m doing alright for an old bloke with cancer,” he laughed. “It’s a lifestyle thing – eat healthily and live healthily – even when it’s freezing cold, it’s still pretty special.” Rosie said that iron man competitors were also a welcoming community that they had become a part of. “We’ve made some amazing and long lasting friends,” she said.

HAVING a pet dog give birth to pups can be an exciting and memorable experience. However, if it is the first time you have been through the experience, things can be pretty daunting. Understanding the process and knowing when things are not going according to plan is paramount to a successful whelping. The process should begin with a planned pregnancy after a long think about why you want your dog to have pups and what you plan to do to ensure the pups go to a loving home. Ideally the mother should be bred to a dog of similar or smaller size to prevent problems with birthing large pups from the outset. If your pet becomes pregnant without things being planned it is wise to discuss things with your vet and think seriously about whether a litter of pups is in the best interest of the dog. Expectant mothers require added feeding in the last 1/3 of the pregnancy. Feeding puppy food to the mother in several meals a day is a good way to ensure they get enough nutrition as the size of their belly increases and squeezes their stomach. Puppy food should continue through lactation as this requires

them to start breathing. The mother will usually lick the pups after they are born and get them going, but if they are not experienced you may need to lend a hand. Pups with nice pink noses and tongues and pups making noises are usually a sign of things going well. Ensuring the pups get on and have a good drink in early life is important too. The colostrum milk helps to boost their immune system for the first few weeks of life. Pups will usually keep drinking from their mother for six weeks. Wet food can be started around four weeks of age. Worming of the mother should be done two weeks before giving birth and pups should be wormed at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 weeks of age. First vaccinations are usually given at six weeks of age. Tim Craig BVSc, Warby St Vet Hospital

a large amount of energy also and puppy food has more energy per gram of food when compared to normal adult dog food. Gestation length in the dog is around 63 days so the last three weeks is the key time to begin increased energy intake by feeding puppy food. At the time of imminent birth dogs often become restless and start nesting behavior about 24 hours prior to whelping. From the point of visible abdominal contractions the first pup is usually delivered within 30 minutes. Subsequent pups also tend to come within 30 minutes of each other. A period of one hour before the first pup or between pups can be considered abnormal and signifies it is time to call the vet. Intervening earlier rather than later in a difficult birth tends to provide better results. Pups are born in their placentas and the mother will usually break these open and free the pup. If they do not do this you will need to free them from their placenta to allow them to start breathing. Holding the pups in a dry towel and gently rubbing their chest walls can help stimulate

CATCH OF THE WEEK

FISHING FOCUS

Name: Tyler Peake, Chiltern Catch: Murray cod (his first fish catch) Size 60cm Bait: Cheese Location: Jingellic

REWARD FOR EFFORT: If you want to catch trout, now is the time to fish the river mouths of lakes such as Eildon, Dartmouth and William Hovell, as the fish look to make their spawning run up river. Tom Shaw caught this beauty at this time last year.

LAST ISSUE’S SOLUTION

Trout most common catch at Eildon BY ROB ALEXANDER, WANGARATTA THERE has been little change in the fishing since last week’s report. That is typical for this time of the year when things are pretty slow. I gave Lake Eildon Cruises a call on the weekend to ask how the lake has been fishing. Arlene Baade reported that catches of redfin have been very scarce recently and that the ones that have been caught have been very small. She said a few yellowbelly have been

turning up, but not in big numbers. Arlene said the odd boat has been coming back with a small “pan sized” yellowbelly or two but that’s about it. The trout, however, have been the most commonly caught fish at Bonnie Doon in recent weeks with anglers catching them quite consistently by angling with scrubworms in among the submerged timber. My own personal experiences in previous years is that this is the time of year when the larger trout in the lakes tend to move up toward the river mouths ready for their annual spawning run upstream. Trolling around river mouths with small minnows and Tassie Devils is usually a

productive way to catch trout in lakes at this time of the year. Although I have not heard any reports yet, this is the time of year when the big Murray cod start to get active in the Murray River downstream of Lake Mulwala. As I said, I have not heard any reports, but I believe this would be a good place to head at the moment, and for the next couple of months cast or troll very large hard body lures and spinnerbaits to try and get those big cranky cod fired up enough to strike your lure. Bright colors usually work very well when you are trying to induce an aggressive strike from a territorial Murray cod.

Simple tastes EVEN though I’ve travelled quite a lot and always been reasonably adventurous in trying different culinary experiences, I’d have to say I am not generally the most ‘culinarily sophisticated’ of people (is ‘culinarily’ even a word? If not, consider it a new term for the occasion). I was thinking about this the other day as I prepared myself one of my favorite treats in the whole world; vanilla icecream in a cone. Yep, there you have it, ladies and gentlemen. The Kitchen Philosopher, ruminator and observer of the world and all its flavors, traditions, thoughts and eccentricities likes nothing more than a good old dollop of Peter’s icecream. Who would have thought? Oh yes, I enjoy lots of other foods (my continued battle with my waistline being evidence of this), but it seems I am a woman of simple tastes. I like vegemite on white bread too. Yes, I know. Who among the ‘healthy life brigade’ these days ever admits to eating white bread? But it’s not like I give into my desires all the time. Mostly I eat wholegrain or other more (purportedly) healthy bread variants. But every now and then I just can’t resist white bread with butter and vegemite! Yummmm! I trace my simple tastes back to my working class upbringing and the fact that my Mum was, like me, a fairly disinterested cook. She was not exactly an adventurous chef and about the most exciting thing I can recall ever coming out of our kitchen was madeira cake and the Sunday lamb roast. I guess maybe I just missed some of her best cooking. After all, being the youngest of five kids probably meant she was already over all that domestic goddess stuff by the time I came along. My siblings got all the really good fare. Not that I cared at the time. I recall that I actually preferred ‘shop bought’ cake to Mum’s homemade stuff but I can’t recall if this was due to the actual poor taste of Mum’s cooking or if ‘homemade’ was simply synonymous with ‘uncool’. Which is, thankfully, a far cry from these

BY CATHERINE WARNOCK days, when everything homemade has made a comeback and is now afforded the respect it deserves. Everywhere you go, homage is being paid to the humble home made cake, dessert, treat, bread or meal. It’s wonderful to see! The old fashioned favorites are back like bread and butter pudding (actually, Mum did make that one. Kudos for that, Mum), cupcakes, lamb shanks and all those other yummy vintage comfort foods. My mouth’s watering just thinking of them. And interest in cooking itself has taken an upward swing if the TV ratings for shows like My Kitchen Rules and Masterchef are anything to go by. Believe it or not, there are small children out there who know how to pronounce ‘jus’ (not bad, considering I’ve only just figured it out.). These kids know their way around a kitchen and can turn out a mean cupcake or muffin. My own kids enjoyed home cooking to a greater extent than I had as a child. Their favorites were Anzac biscuits, golden syrup dumplings, hedgehog slice and spaghetti bolognaise. They have even given me the thumbs up as ‘Best Lasagne Maker in the World’, which is a pretty awesome title and one which I am keen to maintain. Thus I never let the boys’ partners help cook the lasagne for fear they will steal my lasagne secrets and upstage me in the eyes of my sons. No mother/girlfriend competition here, is there? He he. My dad always blamed himself for Mum’s lack of interest in the kitchen. He realised he’d cut his own nose off to spite his face by not complimenting her more in the early years of their marriage (when she had indeed shown a keen interest in delighting her man with food). “Yeah, way to go, Dad,” we all lamented upon hearing this story years later. “So it’s your fault that she never got past tinned spaghetti! Hmph!”

WINE TALK

IN MY KITCHEN

Brown Brothers

Hot and sour prawn soup

2013 18 Eighty Nine Pinot Grigio Around $18.00

WITH BRONWYN INGLETON I KNOW this is another soup recipe - but it is soup weather. This Thai inspired soup is a great light soup with a bit of bite to it, I could eat it every night, the trick is to get green prawns, you will have to find a fish shop that sells them. Some of the ingredients may seem strange and hard to find, but trust me they impart a delicious flavor to the soup, the kaffir-lime leaves may be the only one you can’t find, but if you do find it you can freeze them. Asian shops may have it in their freezers. I am lucky as I have a tree growing. Method Peel and devein prawns, leaving tails intact, reserve heads and the shells. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a saucepan and cook the prawn shells and heads over a medium heat until there are changes in color. Add 2 litres of water, lemon grass, kaffir-lime leaves and ginger, bring to the boil, then reduce heat, simmer for 20 minutes. Strain stock. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large saucepan and cook prawns for one minute, then pour strained stock over. Add chillies, green onions, tomato, bok choy, fish sauce and lime juice to taste, simmer for 1-2 minutes or until bok choy has just wilted. Place cooked noodles in serving bowls, spoon soup mixture over and serve sprinkled with coriander leaves, with a lime wedge separately.

WITH ANITA McPHERSON Brown Brothers is easy to enjoy. Made from grapes grown at the Banksdale and Whitlands vineyards in the ranges around the King Valley, the crystal clear liquid has a gentle green hue. It also has an uplifting bouquet of fresh apple and blossom, flavors of Nashi pear and Golden Delicious, and a crisp and lightly citrus finish. It is ideal with the sort of dishes that tend to kick off a great meal, like Ceviche, pan fried scallops or little niblets of truffle-dusted quail. Which sounds so much more mature and sophisticated than suggesting popcorn chicken, even though I’m sure that would be a winner too. Find out more at www. brownbrothers.com.au.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

New Eldorado Church, 1871 ELDORADO’S Congregational Church was officially opened by the Rev A Gosman of St Kilda on May 28, 1871. The Congregational Church in the North East had an interesting group of men as ministers. Not the least of these was the Rev William Lee Rees, who was one of the best cricketers

ever to play in the area. By the time the Eldorado Congregational Church was opened, the Rev Rees had left Australia, left the church, and become a barrister. He eventually became a Prime Minister of New Zealand.

INGREDIENTS

ONCE upon a time there was a group of girls who looked forward to fancy dress parties, taking days to prepare their kooky costumes and hours getting dolled up for the big event. They’d sometimes indulge in one of the latest wine coolers while they put their faces on, laughing and talking about the boys who might be there on the night. Invariably there would be slabs of beers and casks of wine at the party, with the only redeeming feature of the cardboard catastrophes being the ability to blow up the empty bladder if someone needed a makeshift pillow later in the evening. These days those girls still do a lot of laughing and talking about boys, but now older, wiser and way more refined, it tends to be over degustation dinners and European varietals. The current favorite for fruity freshness is Pinot Grigio, and this young and vibrant version from

Feeling blah?

And so the saga continues

DIGESTIVE discomfort are some of the most common issues we are faced with as naturopaths. Bloating, reflux, heart burn, stomach pains, diarrhoea, constipation, gas (yes, even ladies fart!), belching just to name a few. There are multiple over the counter products that claim to relieve these symptoms. However, like most cures, simplicity is often the best place to start. Yes, I am afraid that means diet and lifestyle! t $IFX ZPVS GPPE digestion begins in the mouth. The smaller the food is when it enters your stomach the less work it has to do to toss and turn your food around to get the best out of it. t 4UFQ BXBZ GSPN ZPVS EFTL Eating in a relaxed environment away from computers, televisions, and work allows your nervous system to switch off allowing your digestion to work at its optimum. Distractions while eating result in greater amounts being consumed leading to overfilling of the

stomach, bloating, gas and food comas like on Christmas day. So head back to the table, eat as a family and talk about the good things that happened in your day. t 4USFTT MFTT Ongoing stress (emotional, physical, neurological) switches off digestive function and enzymatic release. These enzymes are vital to breaking down foods and reducing bloating. Stress management is easily treated; see your health care professional for help.

Consult your health care professional for diet and lifestyle suggestion that will get you back on track and feeling amazing.

IF the Prime Minister thought the Australian people would take his budget lying down, then what a shock to not only the system, but to his standing as a politician. Having had some time to reflect, I am of the opinion that more than the unemployed and disability pensioners will suffer great hardship during the next financial year. I think we can forget about the student protests and marches - this will not change things at all. Bureau of Statistics figures released last Wednesday show that wages growth is a paltry 2.6 per cent for the year against the Consumer Price Index with a rise of 2.9 per cent and plunged to its lowest level in 17 years. Commonwealth Bank senior economist John Peters said workers could do little about the fall in real wages and he expected shoppers would close their wallets, at least in the short term. Westpac’s consumer sentiment index, also released last Wednesday, showed a knock to confidence, falling 6.8 per cent to 92.9. Almost 60 per cent of respondents in the Westpac survey said the budget would make it tougher on family finances in the next 12 months whist only 3.1 per cent said it would make things better. It is no wonder that we are feeling pain. Two years ago when the Prime Minister and others were complaining about the carbon tax and telling us we were going backwards, wages were climbing a cool 3.7 per cent. Wages follow the job market and when employment is barely growing then wages are stagnant too. It’s hard to apply for a pay rise when there are few options available elsewhere. The Treasurer is asking workers to make sacrifices for their country and with these statistics showing a glum outlook in the near future what can workers do? Another thing that I note from the budget is

By KEN CLARKE, WANGARATTA CERTIFIED PRACTICING ACCOUNTANT

LDMBSLF!BMQIBMJOL DPN BV the change to unemployment benefits. The government budget figures estimate there will be around 100,000 young people under 30 who will be required when they have been unemployed for six months to be moved to a new “work for the dole program. They will be paid for this work, but if they fail to find work or study during that time they would then face another six months without payment. Yes, I know there are many who do not wish to work, but in country areas employment is not always easy to find. I just hope this does not see an increase in vandalism in our towns and cities. This budget measure is expected to save $1.2 billion over four years and will apply to new claimants from next year. As I read again the budget overview and the intention of the government to build a world class higher education system, I cannot see how this will happen if we can believe what the Vice Chancellor of the University of Sydney said in a newspaper article published last week. We need some rational debate where the people we put and pay well to manage the affairs of the country are doing so with due consideration and respect of the total community. It is not good enough for them to talk us down and push their own ideology just because they happen to be in power today. Our leaders need to be taken to account by some means for the blatant disregard of the truth which our parliamentarians seem to abide by. The Australian people need real answers to considered questions; avoidance is not an acceptable answer to a question. What has happened to yes and no?
