SHE grew up as part of Myrtleford’s thriving tobacco industry, but what Sonja Leearne remembers most about her childhood is the friendliness and camaraderie of the community around her. Her days and nights were spent with her family and the vibrant multicultural community that had sprung up around the tobacco industry, including people from Italy, Australia, Yugoslavia and Spain, some of which are still part of her life to this day. “I never smoked, but we lived and breathed tobacco every hour of the day,” Ms Leearne said of her peaceful rural childhood in Eurobin. Though there was always plenty of work to do, from irrigation to harvesting, she remembers those days with fondness and says the farming life equipped her with resilience and a healthy work ethic. “A job has to be completed, you can’t leave things halfway through,” she said. Her memories, and a drive to commemorate a significant chapter in Myrtleford’s history, have driven Ms Leearne to create a museum based around tobacco, which has sprung up around her business, Reign of Pearls. It is a decision applauded by her father, former German tobacco farmer Gerry Hoffmann.

What’s in your garden: It’s basically a native garden, with features including a mass planting of kangaroo paw, herbs, a large range of eremophilas, and more. The many native plants attract a number of native birds, including several honeyeaters. What do you enjoy about gardening: We enjoy sitting and enjoying the results. What do you enjoy about gardening: While Alan has no particular favorite, Scilla enjoys the herb garden and uses the plants extensively in her cooking. Favorite plant in your garden: The couple’s rule of thumb is if it does not survive without water,
it does not stay. The nature of the garden also means that many of the plants drop leaves during the year and mulch themselves. The pair also have low maintenance vegetable boxes inspired by a segment on Gardening Australia. Water saving/conservation tip: We only water in the early morning, and deep water the whole garden once a week. We try to ensure the plants have lots of protective shade, and we also mulch thoroughly. Your tips to keep gardens in top shape: Your tips to keep gardens in top shape: Planning is important, and keeping the garden low
maintenance and easy to care for is key.

AS I sit under the verandah writing this column, it is a typical summer’s day with blue sky and sunshine, twittering birds and cicadas singing their summer songs. The new year has begun and we are already half way through summer. The garden is starting to look tired with many flowers finished or in their final stages. The veggie garden is starting to suffer under the summer heat and the lawn has become a straw color. One plant stands out with its light green leaves covered in large dark pink trumpet-shaped flowers with striking white stamens. Hibiscus syriacus, more commonly known as Rose of Sharon, is a hardy plant thriving in these conditions. They flower at their best in a very hot and sunny spot. If they don’t get enough sun, flowering is reduced and they are susceptible to fungal infection. The flowers appear in midsummer and continue into autumn when few other shrubs are in bloom. Although each flower only lasts a day, the shrub produces many buds which bloom over a long period. Hibiscus syriacus is an upright,

deciduous shrub growing to 2-4 metres in height. They benefit from a prune in late winter to shape them and reduce the size. This also improves flowering as the flowers are produced on the new spring growth. Rose of Sharon are low maintenance, needing an annual feed with compost in spring, just before flowering and a thick layer of much applied around the base of the shrub out to the drip line. The plant is drought-tolerant but may need watering once a week in very hot dry weather. If the leaves yellow, this is a sign of over-watering. The hibiscus beetle can be a problem as it eats the buds and flowers; control them by burying some Confidor tablets in the soil around the base. The best time to plant them is in spring or autumn and they are easily propagated by cuttings or layering or grown from seed. Happy gardening New Year.

VETS CORNER

Tick paralysis MEMORIES: Gerry Hoffmann was among those who worked in the Myrtleford tobacco industry and is pictured here sitting on his old picking machine. PHOTO: Simon Crase
A recent visitor to Mareeba, also a pivotal part of the former Australian tobacco industry, Mr Hoffmann said he supported the idea of commemorating this chapter in the town’s history. “Tobacco put Myrtleford on the map,” he said. “There should be something here for people to come and see what the industry was about.” Mr Hoffmann added that as well as being a livelihood, being part of the tobacco industry was a real community. “Everybody worked together, and if you were in trouble, someone would help you out, it didn’t matter who you were.” The museum’s collection thus far includes a range of tobacco equipment and memorabilia, including two and four seat planters, an original water tanker, an early model picking machine, a ride on hoeing machine, a kiln
door from an old transportable kiln, an original metal bale press, an original tobacco tying stick, and several bale stampers (each farm would stamp their individual number on each bale of tobacco), just to name a few items. With the museum located on instantly recognisable site of Myrtleford’s previous tourist information centre, Ms Leearne said she was looking forward to sharing the stories of the tobacco industry with many visitors for years to come, and was optimistic about the future growth of the museum. “I believe we need to explore the history of the tobacco side of Myrtleford,” Ms Leearne said. Anyone interested in finding out more about the museum, or about donating equipment or memorabilia, can contact Sonja Leearne or Tamar Newbegin on 5752 1727.
TICK paralysis is caused by the tick Ixodes holocyclus, found on the east coast of Australia. It is important to be aware of this condition if you are travelling to coastal regions with your pet over summer, or indeed any time of the year. These ticks are natural parasites of bandicoots and possums, which are not affected unlike our domestic pets. The paralysis tick attaches to the dog and feeds on blood, releasing toxins that affect the nervous system. These toxins cause acute, progressive motor paralysis and possibly even death if not treated. Signs that you may see as a result of tick paralysis include hind limb weakness progressing to generalised weakness, a change in voice and difficulty breathing normally. These signs do not develop immediately and take 4-21 days after the tick has commenced feeding and injecting toxin. As a result of this variability, clinical signs of tick paralysis may only become apparent up to three weeks after returning home from a coastal holiday. If you suspect that your dog is affected it is important to take your dog to a vet clinic to be assessed, letting the veterinarian know that you have recently been to a tick area. You should not try to remove the tick at home, as correct removal is very important. The best way to avoid tick paralysis in your pet
is to start a tick prevention program before taking your pet to a tick infested region. There are a range of spot on products available which can be used fortnightly for the prevention of paralysis ticks. These products should be used in combination with collars designed to prevent ticks also. It is important to check the specific directions on each packet and note that dosing frequencies used to control other parasites may not be adequate for the control of paralysis ticks. CATCH OF THE WEEK
FISHING FOCUS
Fantastic fishing in 2014 BY ROB ALEXANDER, WANGARATTA
WELCOME to 2014 and hopefully another year of bent rods and tight lines. I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and happy New Year. Now let’s get down to business... The last few weeks have seen some fantastic fishing right across the region. The Murray cod fishing has been red hot just about everywhere. From the Broken River, to the Kiewa River and everywhere in between anglers have been catching Murray cod on both bait and lures. Lake Mulwala has been fishing quite steadily as well. Not as many cod have been caught down there as have been in recent years, however the average size of the fish that have been caught has been much better than it has up here around Wangaratta where most fish have been undersize. Lake Hume has been fishing quite well for yellowbelly and redfin. I fished off the bank up there one evening and caught around 50 redfin just casting small soft plastics and wet wading.

4 FISHING MATES: Joey Barca and Brett Corker celebrate Joey’s lovely Murray cod that saved the three of us from having a fishless evening on the King River on New Year’s Eve. I didn’t catch a fish that night, but did see the most snakes if that accounts for anything.
Admittedly, of those 50 or so redfin I caught, only one was big enough to rip a couple of fillets off. My fish were caught over shallow grassy flats at the Ebden boat ramp. Anglers targeting yellowbelly in Lake Hume have been concentrating their efforts on the steep rocky points where they have been doing very well. Wodonga angler Cliff Karnatz has been catching a lot of yellowbelly, mainly by trolling the McGrath wide body lures in Cobra color. I have had mixed reports from Lake William Hovell.
Some anglers are getting fish and some are not. This is the nature of Lake William Hovell. Those that have caught redfin have caught them on small yabbies in around 20 feet of water. As is usually the case, most redfin have been too small to consider keeping. And a quick tip with this hot weather we are experiencing. Don’t leave unopened cans of soft drink in your car in the direct sunlight during the heat or they will explode. A lesson learnt the hard way for me.

Who owns my house? WHO actually owns my house? Now, I know that might seem like an odd question. Especially if you picked up on the fact that we’ve recently purchased a new (circa 1925) house. So you might be thinking “Well, you own the house, you dope!” And whilst that, indeed, appears to be the case – and would certainly stand up in a court of law my original question still stands. You see, I’ve been thinking a lot about who has lived in this house over the years and, from what I can gather from the locals, it’s been a house that’s had many different occupants over its lifetime. Some were ‘owners’, some were tenants. Some did a great deal of work and maintenance, others evidently did not much. Some had great taste (that is, taste similar to mine – which, okay, perhaps does not necessarily constitute ‘great’ taste by everyone’s definition, but it’s certainly to my liking). Others were clearly not thinking straight when they chose this or that - or were perhaps swayed by the current ‘trend’ at the time. Some tended lovingly and improved the garden, others let it go wild or even watched it die. I can’t quite imagine all the changes this house has seen over the years, but I know they’ve been substantial. Verandahs closed in. Chimneys and fireplaces removed. Walls knocked through. Laundry and kitchen updated. Ceilings lowered. Windows and glass doors installed. Paths and verandahs concreted. Carport and sheds built. Painting – oh, the painting that’s been done! It’s all quite mind boggling. But I still wonder who really owns the house? Am I the actual owner of all the effort, time and love that has been invested in this house? Or am I simply the ‘custodian’; charged with maintaining and improving and hopefully seeing this old girl through for at least a few more years
BY CATHERINE WARNOCK
so she can be passed on to someone new? I got thinking about this as I know one of the previous owners personally. It was her very special home for several years and the lady in question was interested to hear we’d bought it. She was glad to know that, after several years of being rented, the house once again had someone to care for it. I (perhaps mistakenly?) took her interest to mean she might like to see some of the improvements we’d made to the overgrown and shabby garden. I showed her the ‘before’ pictures and she was aghast to see one of her beloved trees hacked to ground level and a mound of dirt and old roots in place of what had once been a lush bed of azaleas and camellias. I felt for her, and tried to make amends the next time I saw her by offering to show her another pic of the verdant new lawn, surrounded by some of her original rockery garden and a lovely ornamental pear replacing the half dead melaleuca. She seemed reluctant and I realised maybe I was pushing the envelope. Maybe it was just too hard for her to look at the changes made to her beloved home. I couldn’t blame her as I tended to think of this lady as the ‘original’ owner. But, of course, she was not. She was just one in a long succession of people who have sheltered within these walls; who have called this place ‘home’. Yes, she loved it and made it more beautiful. But it’s no more her house than it will ever really be mine. An earthquake could destroy this house in seconds and it would be gone. So, upshot? Cliché as it may sound, I’ve come to realise that it’s not the actual building that makes a house a home. It’s the feelings and memories that go with it. And I’m more than happy to ‘co-own’ those with the families who’ve gone before me. (Note to self, though: Keep the ‘backyard blitz’ photos to yourself and stop upsetting people, will ya?)

Method 1. Bring a medium saucepan of water to the boil. Boil rice noodles for 3 to 5 minutes, or until al dente, and drain. Rinse thoroughly with cold water so they don’t stick together. 2. Fill a large shallow bowl with warm water. Dip one wrapper into the water for one second to soften. Lay wrapper on the bench and place two prawn halves, a handful of noodles, basil, mint, coriander and lettuce in a row across the centre, leaving about 5cm of the wrapper uncovered on each side. 3. Fold in uncovered sides of wrapper, then tightly roll to enclose the filling. Repeat with remaining rolls. 4. In a small bowl, mix the fish sauce, water, lime juice, garlic, sugar and garlic-chilli sauce. 5. In another small bowl, mix the hoisin sauce and peanuts.

SUMMER is the time for flies and I started early doing the great Aussie salute way back in November. It began with the simple, one-handed windscreen wiper action while walking up the street and it was nice so many people thought I was waving to them. I’ve since moved on to the two handed flap, but it still pales in comparison to the time we spent travelling the Gibb River Road with heads enclosed in a hat and balloon of netting because of the thick haze of flies and red dust. It made it very difficult to get a glass to the lips and in the unrelenting heat which is all you thought about doing. I appreciate it that now on a hot day I can enjoy a glass of Pfeiffer Wines Pinot Grigio in air conditioned and fly-free comfort. In a cool glass you can appreciate the wine’s purity and pale straw color, exuding

Menopause, heart disease and weight gain
2014 - A year of change
HEART disease (cholesterol, blood pressure, stroke and heart attacks) have traditionally been associated as a man’s major health concern. Now, however, research is focusing on women and starting to explain why menopause is a risk factor and time in your life, for women to start to have heart related issues. Many women will become frustrated at menopause, when they start to put on tummy weight, and on medical check ups discover that their cholesterol and blood pressure have increased, despite eating and exercising the same as premenopause. WHY? Before menopause, women’s estrogen levels help to protect them from heart disease, as estrogen naturally increases HDL (good cholesterol) and lowers LDL (bad cholesterol). After menopause women’s total cholesterol levels will rise and often to higher levels than men’s. There are some risk factors for heart disease that we can not control such as menopause, family history and age. But there are plenty that we can modify.
WITH SOPHIE ATKIN, NATUROPATH
AND a very happy New Year to you all, but I wonder how many will be saying “What is there to be happy about”. As I sit and ponder what my lot will bring this year, and of what I have read over the holiday break is already sending shivers down my spine. First Ford, then Holden and now Toyota delaying what I believe is inevitable when you look at the statistics for the top 10 selling Australian made cars. Then we have the talk of Medicare being privatised, the talk of a co-contribution when you visit the doctor and both the paper manufacturing and textile industries crying foul that the government should be giving them more support by buying “Australian made”. But as a regional homeowner, the one that frightens me most of all is the plan to privatise Australia Post. When I visit small communities like Whorouly, Moyhu, Springhurst, Cheshunt and the like, can you imagine what the Post Office closure would mean to their towns. Most are trying to provide a service to the community and the Post Office is not only a meeting place for the locals not privy to home delivery of mail and parcels, but usually in the smaller communities newspapers and the odd grocery items that they stock. The whole population of North East Victoria needs to be writing to every Member of Parliament they can think of, expressing their opposition to any change to ownership and or responsibility of Australia Post. Springhurst is a small town with no shop, but a Post Office, and I can speak with some knowledge of the wonderful job bringing the community together on a Friday evening a band of volunteers has achieved. With a population in the area of about 400, it often provides meals at a more than affordable
ON YOUR FEET: Keeping active is a way to ensure good heart health and reduce weight gain.
How to improve heart health after menopause and reduce belly fat. 1. Assess your risk factors: do you have high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, a waist measurement of 85cm or more? If so it is important to make some lifestyle changes. 2. Increase phytoestrogens: These bind to estrogen receptors and help to reduce LDL levels by up to 15 per cent, and are found in sources such as red clover tea, tofu, tempeh, nuts and seeds,
sprouts, chickpeas. 3. Increase healthy oils: these increase good cholesterol and reduce bad cholesterol, reduce inflammation and protect the heart, including, avocado and flax seed oil. 4. Fibre: reduces central weight, clears excess cholesterol, and is found in LSA, nuts, fruit and veg, shredded coconut, grated apple, oats. 5. Exercise: walking for 30 minutes three times a week is the minimum it takes to start burning belly fat and improving heart health.

kclarke@alphalink.com.au price, for more than 100 locals and visitors and any profits made are distributed to worthy organisations and unfortunate individuals within the community. Amazing how this small community is pulling together, but take away the Post Office and there will be no community focus point for exchange of local news and “how much rain did you get”. I did read some months ago where letter postage sales were declining, but parcel delivery by Australia Post was booming. And of course we have the contractor in Sydney who just threw the parcel over the fence. What about the Prime Minister’s pledge to provide one million jobs in five years. It is now been revealed that this figure was not from modelling or detailed calculations, but came from the employment growth figures achieved by the Howard government of about 2.2 per cent a year, so this will create a million jobs in five years. Treasury forecasts in last month’s mini budget that employment would grow three quarters of one per cent this financial year and 1.5 per cent in each of the next three years. Library analysis commissioned by Labor found last week that this was likely to leave the Coalition at least 200,000 jobs short of its pledge. This has been backed by a range of economists who said it would be very difficult to achieve given the ending of the mining boom and the plans to make huge cuts to the federal budget. So readers, I expect that 2014 will not be “all beer and skittles” for the greater populous of Australia, but one with a lot of heartbreak for some and a year of penny pinching from the aged and low income families by the government. Oh and by the way, make sure you send your letter of concern by post to your parliamentarians.
