Saved from drought North East and Goulburn farmers escape the worst Ű

BRUCE McCormack can still remember the day he shot 500 of his father-in-law’s sheep. The year was 1982, and the government provided bullets for free. Bullets, worth a few cents, were a better option than keeping stock alive. Bruce mustered the sheep into the yards on the Strathbogie farm, and systematically shot them, one by one. It is a memory that still haunts him. “I remember that day – not because of the conditions, of the dry or the heat, but because we were walking through a yard and shooting my father-in-law’s livelihood,” he said. “You turned around, and all you could see were dead sheep lying on the ground - and still hundreds more to go. “I’ll never forget it – it broke both our hearts.” Fast forward 35 years and Bruce is one of the few farmers in the North East sidestepping similar conditions. He and his family run a commercial Angus operation out of Merrijig – one that has been in his family for seven generations. Nestled into the base of the High Country, Bruce’s operation spans 700 acres – and most of it has been spared the devastating conditions crippling the rest of the country.

PLAN AHEAD NOW: Some farmers across the North East and Goulburn Murray Farmer region have been spared the crippling drought conditions effecting much of the country – and, if rains fall this month, may yet be able to bale quality hay. Dr Matt Mahoney, president of the Grasslands Society of Southern Australia, agronomy specialist and owner of Agridome Consultancy, recently spoke at the Valley Seeds Open Day – urging local producers to make the most of the season. Letter to the editor

Complete dispersal of the Witherswood females WE would like to bid farewell to all our many Witherswood supporters and friends. We are sad to be leaving an industry that we love, and where we feel we have greatly contributed to the genetics of the Angus breed. We were fortunate indeed to have made the decision in the early days to purchase some of the best genetics available in the industry. Some 20 years ago, as part of the selection process, we chose the Millah Murrah Angus Stud at Bathurst and Booroomooka Angus at Bingara, just two of the many successful studs that we sourced for our genetic base. Since that time, we have been very careful to retain and

improve our wonderful cow families and have several donors and potential donors in our herd. On our journey, we have made wonderful friends and have enjoyed a long association with many like-minded people. It is always hard to say goodbye, but the time has come for us to move on and pass our genetics on to others who will take our work to another level. We will certainly be watching and following this progress with great interest. Time is closing for our October 19 sale day, and October 18 open for inspection day. As advertised, in the sale we will have 290 cows and calves, including recipients and embryo calves.

Our first calvers with their calves will be a sale highlight, as will 135 weaner heifers. What that is telling us, is that quality shines through in the dry conditions. This is your opportunity to secure quality females with calves by leading industry sires. Over our time in the Angus industry, we have always been true to the ‘Witherswood method’ of success by using superior genetics, with particular emphasis on structure, growth, fertility and muscle. We hope to see you at the sale. John and Joan Woodruff, and all the Witherswood team, Taminick

HELP THE INDUSTRY: John Conroy is a beef farmer from Milawa, and is calling for a complete overhaul of the Federal Government’s approach to dealing with the drought.

k:H DUH VWLOO ORRNLQJ WR o QG a couple of hundred thousand dollars with grain, water and other costs, he said. “We normally cut 300 WRQQHV RI o QH FKRS VLODJH q this season it might be 150200 tonnes instead – but it will still be reasonable for us. Greg is already contemplating sowing sorghum or millet as a summer crop to bolster feed, and will consider pulling back his milking herd if the season continues to worsen. “We haven’t had substantial rainfall here for quite a period of time – you only have to look at crops in the region to know everyone is struggling, he said. Last month, 12 month old bucket reared Friesian steers sold to a top of $116 at Echuca. Further proof, Greg said, that the problem was compounded across the industry. “You obviously lose money selling them for that – but everything else is being effected by the season; hay and grain prices are effected, so then the ability to feed is – things could really drop away substantially in milk production over the next 6-12 months, Greg said. Currently, over 40 per cent of dairy farms are located in drought affected regions, with more than 2000 dairy farms affected across New South Wales, Queensland, Murray and East Gippsland. Dairy Australia’s Hay and Grain Report highlights the

reality of the rising feed prices. In the Murray Dairy region, where dairy is underpinned by access to irrigation, prices for water have been elevated on the temporary market, trading at over $300 per megalitre. Due to the demand for fodder from drought affected regions, hay prices have more than doubled since January, costing farmers up to $425/ tonne excluding GST in the Murray Dairy region. Grain prices have also increased over 60 per cent in the same time period, to $420/ tonne. “Typically, farmers will grow the bulk of their annual feed supply in spring, but for many dairy farmers, notably those along Australia’s east coast, it will be tough to achieve the growth required and farmers will need to consider feed purchases to address the gap, chair of Dairy Australia, Jeff Odgers, said. “Our major concern is that we have seen rising feed costs heavily impacting farmers’ FDVK p RZ DQG DFFHVV WR IHHG SDUWLFXODUO\ o EUH LV EHFRPLQJ much harder. “This means as dairy farmers try to hold core herd numbers together, they’re more H[SRVHG WR WKH LQp DWHG IHHG costs we’re seeing across Australia. According to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM), winter rainfall for Victoria was below

average across the north and east of the state, while in the southwest and south it was generally close to average. The BOM has also issued the October – December cli-

mate outlook, which indicates large parts of Australia are likely to be drier than average. This month, there is a strong likelihood of drier conditions across most of

DAIRY INDUSTRY SUFFERING: Chair of Dairy Australia, Jeff Odgers, has said farmers in the Murray Dairy region were being affected by the reality of rising operating costs, with water trading at over $300 per megalitre, hay prices costing $425/tonne and grain prices skyrocketing 60 per cent since Christmas.

Despite the reprieve, or perhaps because of it, Bruce feels nothing but sympathy for those battling a spring with no rain. “We will be ok – we had another 11ml mid-September, and while it won’t be much of a season, it won’t send us to the wall, Bruce said. “I feel for those who are doing it tough – we’ve been through it, but never for years at a time; they’ve forgotten what a good year looks like. Just over the mountains and Milawa farmer John Conroy has called for a complete overhaul of the Federal Government’s approach to dealing with the drought. Like Bruce, John farms in an area that has been relatively shielded from drought. But, he said, there were thousands of others far less fortunate. “We are all helplessly watching the drought in NSW and Queensland crippling agriculture, he said. “We are facing a failed winter crop, along with depleted grain and fodder reserves in the supply system and due to that, the livestock industries are paying unaffordable rates to grow, maintain, or produce commodities from livestock. “Should this be the case or are our governing bodies p HHFLQJ XV" “Our government needs to stop neglecting our farmers and rural communities. John wants Australians to unite, giving voice to their concerns to local MPs, bank managers and direct to the government before it’s too late. “We can’t just sit and wait for government to act in the best interests of our country, he said. “Australian farmers require swift actions from our leaders to help soften the blow and try to have our agricultural sectors remain viable into the future. Almost two hours to the east and Greg Brooks runs 300 milking cows on his dairy farm at Strathmerton. Attracted to the area a decade ago for its central location, 20 inch rainfall and deep lead bore, Greg is likewise facing a tough season - but not as tough as some.

North East farmers urged to make the most of what they’ve got

DROUGHT is affecting many Australian farmers. From Queensland all the way down to Gippsland, the lack of rain is being felt across many regions and industries, with some farm commodity prices entering record levels and quality feed supply becoming scarce. Farmers in the North East of Victoria have been relatively protected from the severe drought conditions felt in other areas of Australia. Winter and spring rain received to date in the area has been ideal to kick-start pasture growth, but despite this, feed is still limited in many paddocks throughout the region. Valley Seeds is a wholesale pasture seed company, based at Yarck. Last month, Dr Matt Mahoney, president of the Grasslands Society of South-

ern Australia, agronomy specialist and owner of Agridome Consultancy, was invited to be on the guest panel as part of the Valley Seeds Open Day. Dr Mahoney spoke about how to maximise pasture growth; and how best to capitalise on the current seasonal conditions being experienced. “Spring is upon us, and that means pasture growth ZLOO EH LQFUHDVLQJ VLJQLoFDQWly as soil temperature begins to rise, he said. “Pasture growth will vary between regions depending on soil moisture levels; soil moisture will most likely be the limiting factor, while pasture species, soil fertility, insects, weeds and grazing management should be carefully considered to ensure these are not what is limiting pasture production. Dr Mahoney said that al-

though climate models are predicting a dryer than average spring, there was still potential to grow decent amounts of pasture given the current soil moisture levels and if another timely drop of rain is received. “There may also be good opportunities to be had in WHUPV RI oQLVKLQJ RII ODPEV or taking on extra cattle at the right price if we grow quality pasture now, he said. While some parts of Australia are suffering with terrible drought conditions, Dr Mahoney said it was important to produce as much high quality farm grown dry matter as possible while the conditions allow - and utilising it shouldn’t be a problem. “It’s important to address any weed and pest issues early, and feed pastures optimally with the guide of a soil test

as this will enable growing the extra feed to meet livestock requirements, replenish silage or hay supplies, or to sell, Dr Mahoney said. “At the very least, we need to be avoiding growing weeds this spring. Jo Tanner, national sales and marketing manager for Valley Seeds, said it was about safeguarding hay crops to get maximum nutrient value. “Farmers need to make sure they are going to cut the best quality hay they can; that means taking care of insects and fertilising; getting on top of everything now and not cutting too late in the vegetative stage, she said. “Parts of North East Victoria are holding up better than

other parts of the state. Mrs Tanner said it was a matter of making sure paddocks produced as much as possible. “There will be hay around, but farmers should be aiming for quality as well, and not just chasing quantity, she said. “There is little stored hay – there are a lot of cereals being FXW ZKLFK LV JUHDW IRU oOOLQJ animals, but if you are wanting something that has more nutritive value, then you really need to look at growing that on farm clover rye blend. For those that are planning a fodder crop, Mrs Tanner recommended a deep rooted brassica as a quick growing

summer feed option, or an Italian rye grass like Amass in high rainfall areas. “Millet has previously been a staple, but this year it’s become quite expensive, so consider this and assess the options, she said. Despite the almost average season in the Yarck – MansoHOG q $OSLQH DUHDV 0UV 7DQner said it was still likely to be a long summer. “Farmers need to weigh up what they’ve got, and what they’re prepared to do, she said. The best advice can always be found by seeking a local agronomist, seed company or other agricultural expert to help understand a full range of options.

TAKING OUT TOP SPOT: Winner Joe Allen, from Elders Euroa alongside runner up Joshua McDonald from SKB Rodwells Warrnambool.

Victoria’s Best Young Auctioneer By GRACE EVANS JOE Allen of Elders in Euroa has come out on top of the 2018 ALPA Victorian Young Auctioneers Competition. Mr Allen came first place in the competition held in Pakenham recently, which showcased the auctioneering talents of stock agents from across the state. Going into his second year in the competition Mr Allen wasn’t going in with any expectations just to have a good day and sell his lot.

“It was tighter competition this year compared to last, so there was that added pressure, Mr Allen said. Coming out on top, Mr Allen said he felt being clear in his speech and getting incredibly close to the asking prices were the elements that helped him along the way. “I sold three lots and was able to get within five cents of one lot and one cent of the other so that was really good, he said. Having competed for his second year in a row, Mr Al-

len recognised that he could see growth in his skills as an auctioneer over the two years competing. “I just like to go into the competition with an individual take on things, he said. “I don’t like to sound too much like other people or try and mimic a style I just do my own thing really. The determined competitors were judged by three livestock agents who were selected based on their industry experience and strong selling backgrounds.

Merrijig operation to buy vegetation credits after clearing 180 acres

A NORTH East farming operation has been ordered to pay costs of $300,000, and dedicate 148 acres to a nature conservation, after illegally clearing more than 180 acres into farming land near Merrijig. Buxi Pty Ltd, the business involved in the case, has reached an agreement with WKH 0DQVo HOG 6KLUH &RXQFLO after clearing the land, without a permit, over a two year period. To off-set the native veg-

It is thought to be one of the largest cases of illegal vegetation clearing in the state. The property in question is one of the last freehold titles

Public urged to support strawberry growers THE public are being urged to continue to support strawberry growers, with one Shepparton grower saying it was important to help the industry recover. Peter Tacey runs Belstack Strawberry Farm, and moved to a u-pick operation around 30 years ago. With strawberry sales plummeting over the last month after

needles were found in some punnets, Mr Tacey said continued buying would be the only thing to save the industry. “I’m worried for the growers right now; what is happening in the industry at the moment is a real shame, and I hope the industry can recover, Mr Tacey said. Belstack Strawberries long ago stopped supplying the big commercial outlets.

Instead, the operation looked for ways to diversify – eventually settling on u-pick as the most financially viable option. “Twenty-eight years ago the break-even point at the farm gate was $1 per punnet, now the break-even point is almost $2 — that’s before anyone makes any money, Mr Tacey said.

WoodShield – lasting through the years GRAPE growers in Australia began training their vines along rope, attached to bush timber posts. Mr Davidson says the idea came from a group of passionate wine drinkers, who just happened to be involved in the plastics industry. Since the beginning of April, the national heavy lamb indicator has gone up an amazing 225c/kg cwt, a $67.50/head increase for a 30kg cwt lamb in just four months. Lamb slaughter declined considerably since the beginning of July, as the supply of finished lambs decreased after a prolonged period of increased slaughter between April and June. This diminished supply has also seen heavy lamb over-thehooks indicators rise to 800¢ in SA, 830¢ in Victoria and 840¢/kg cwt in NSW. As highlighted in a recent MLA piece, Markets, the current drought conditions have delayed the entry of new season lambs. Many producers are reportedly struggling to achieve the usual weight gains required for new season lambs to be market-ready, to reach the trade or heavy weight ranges. Despite increases in the last week, 31 per cent fewer new season lambs have been sold through MLA reported saleyards in July and August in 2018 compared to last year.

THE national heavy lamb indicator recently surpassed 900¢/kg carcase weight (cwt), the first time ever it’s exceeded this mark. The market has come off the boil to a certain extent over the last few weeks, however, it still remains at historically high levels and 230¢/kg cwt up on last year. The national record for most expensive lot of lambs was broken last Monday - for the tenth time since July 20 - with 35kg cwt lambs at Dubbo selling for $344/head. Currently, in the saleyards, restocker lambs (under 18kg cwt) are especially well supplied as it becomes increasingly difficult and costly to finish stock. The total amount of restocker category lambs offered has increased 11 per cent year-on-year, despite overall lamb yardings being down 18 per cent. National heavy lamb supply has dropped sharply as producers who had heavy lambs offloaded them as prices started to increase. Brian Mobbs from High Spa Angus Stud talks family, Angus and life on the farm Q: How long have you been a farmer and what have/do you farm? Our family has owned the original Daylesford farm property since 1965. So I have always had things to do on the land from an early age. We ran a few cattle, grew potatoes and had sheep to shear alongside our then other business pursuits; I became a full time farmer from 1986. 7KH o UVW FDWWOH ZH KDG RQ our farm back in the 1960s were Angus, but at that time our family was focusing its attention on running “Kookaburra Gas, an independent petroleum business. In 1986 we sold our business and decided to get serious about rearing cattle. We assessed the various cattle breeds on offer, and decided we still could not go past Angus for breeding seedstock. We now run Angus beef cattle, trading as High Spa Angus Stud, on 1500 acres split across three main properties in the Daylesford and Mount Franklin district. Our breeding objective is to breed functional Angus cattle with a balance of growth, fertility and carcase quality, backed with strong performance records.

Q: Tell us about your family. My parents Jackson and Netta Mobbs - both now deceased - raised myself, my brother Wayne and my sister Mary in Daylesford with a strong work ethic; strong and loyal family values with a love of nature, animals and the land. We all worked together for many years. Now Wayne and I run High Spa Angus Stud, along with our wives Theresa and Rose - and with able assistance from my son Kevin and his son Shannon. In a close family business we DOO KDYH VSHFLo F UROHV DQG ZRUN to our strengths but we are p H[LEOH DQG FDQ SLWFK LQ ZKHU ever required - it works well. Most of us are keen Essendon supporters and we follow them through good times and bad. Q: Best advice you ever received? The best advice I have ever received has come from the women in my life, my mother, sister, wife and now my daughters-in-law and my granddaughters - that you can never get back time not spent with your family; so it is important to strike a healthy work/life balance. Q: Describe your perfect day.

Brian Mobbs

FAMILY FOCUS: The Mobbs family have farmed their land since the 1960s, and today High Spa Angus is run as a family enterprise – with three generations all employed on the farm.

My perfect day, whether it LV ZHW o QH RU HYHQ VQRZLQJ begins by doing something like taking out a bale of hay to the cows and calves. Out in the paddocks there is just me and the animals as I roll out the hay, talk to the “girls, and check out which calves are showing promise as future stud females or bulls. It might make me smile even more if the Bombers have had a win that weekend. Q: Best investment you ever made?

One of the best investments we made in our endeavour to breed a great herd and to offer to the industry super performing bulls was to become a full member of Angus Australia, and to be a participant in Angus Group Breedplan. This has enabled us to use estimated breeding values (EBVs) as a tool, alongside visual assessment to breed the best animals possible. EBVs can also inform us what bulls are best suited to MRLQ o UVW FDOYLQJ KHLIHUV DQG they assist us to help clients

select out bulls that are particularly suited to their end markets. Q: Worst investment you ever made? One of our worst investments ever was to buy some bull semen which, when used on our herd, threw back to a heavier animal way back in the pedigree and it created DOO VRUWV RI GLIo FXOWLHV ZLWK the heifer herd we had to him. The worst of it was, going on his EBVs, this bull should have posed no such problems and although we have

heard about the odd farmer ZKR DOVR H[SHULHQFHG ZKDW we did, most that we know of had no major hardships. So as an investment it was one that we went into in good faith and we would probably do so again on the information at hand, but it was no fun pulling his abnormally heavy calves from the suffering heifers at the time. Q: Best memory? My sons may not agree with this but one of my best farm memories is when the whole family, my parents, my wife and all the boys when they were young, possibly with some of their young cousins as well, went out on a “working bee to clean up a particular paddock of sticks or stones. The heads would be bent for hours and the old adage “many hands make light work paid off. There was a bit of groaning but usually a lot of chatter and banter as well and at the end of the day we all went home tired but VDWLVo HG Q: How can we get in contact with you – what’s your website? We have a regularly updated website www.highspa. com.au and there are contact options on that site.

Winter crop production to fall in 2018-19 TOTAL winter crop production is expected to drop by 12 per cent nationally to 33.2 million tonnes, with production declines forecast in all eastern states, according to the latest Australian crop report. Limousin on-farm stud challenge taking place this month THE Victorian branch of the Australian Limousin Breeders Society will conduct an on-farm challenge this month for all Victorian studs. The overall aim of the challenge is to promote and showcase Limousin cattle across the state, while also encouraging farmers to improve the breed to better meet current and future market needs. The challenge is a competition in which members can enter individual animals to be inspected, on-farm and in their usual condition, by an experienced cattle judge. The judge will provide feedback on a score sheet, and awards will be given to the

highest scoring animals in each class. In the Northern Limousin Group, Mistletoe Limousins from Greta South will be one such stud participating in the challenge. Stud principal Denis O’Connor said he was looking forward to the challenge - and hoped that people will come and observe the judging or just check out the animals during the event when it visits the North East on Wednesday, October 10. “This is a great opportunity to have some of your animals assessed and compared with other animals from throughout the state, without having to travel to shows or field days, Mr O’Connor said.

“The animals will be in paddock condition without special grooming or feeding - it will be a busy and exciting time at Mistletoe Limousins with calving just ending. Mr O’Connor will have only just returned from the Elmore Field Days, where the stud is providing two bulls for display as part of the Northern Limousin Group Promotion of Limousin cattle. After three days of Limousin judging throughout Victoria, there will be a presentation of awards at a dinner / social evening being held on October 13 in Bendigo for all studs that participated in the on-farm challenge.

NORTH EAST ON SHOW: Denis O’Connor, from Mistletoe Limousins in Greta South, is one local stud taking part in the October on-farm challenge.

Decide your own levy - Woolpoll votes are now open VOTING is now open for WoolPoll 2018, and eligible woolgrowers have until November 2 to make their vote count. WoolPoll is a vote by woolgrowers to determine what percentage of their wool income they’d like to contribute to the

future funding of research, development and marketing for the industry through Australian Wool Innovation (AWI) over the next three years. WoolPoll panel chair and South Australian mixed farmer, Sydney Lawrie, encouraged

woolgrowers to vote as soon as they receive their voter information kits. “The kits containing the ballot papers, voting instructions and voter information memorandum have been sent in the mail today, Mr Lawrie said.

“There are five levy rate options for woolgrowers to consider: 3 per cent, 2.5 per cent, 2 per cent, 1.5 per cent and 0 per cent. “I’m encouraging all woolgrowers who are eligible to vote in WoolPoll not to delay

Lawrie said there’s never been a more important time for growers to have their say on the levy rate for the next three years. “It’s your wool, your choice, so please vote, he said. Visit www.woolpoll.com.au for more information.

Clean up grain storages before temperatures rise GRAIN growers are advised to closely monitor their grain storages over the coming weeks as increasing temperatures are likely to stimulate stored grain insect pest activity. Grain remaining on-farm from the previous harvest is a common breeding ground for pests, so growers are encouraged to regularly monitor stored grain and clean up any grain residues. The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) Grain Storage Extension Project manager, Chris Warrick, says early detection of grain pests allows them to be identified, treated appropriately and removed before they spread and become a much larger problem. “Grain residues in storages or

older grain stocks held over from last season provide ideal breeding sites for pests, says Mr Warrick. “Meticulous grain hygiene combined with structural treatments, such as diatomaceous earth (DE), can play a key role in reducing the number of stored grain pests. Mr Warrick said effective grain hygiene requires complete removal of all waste grain from storages and equipment. “Pests only need a small amount of grain for survival, and those surviving populations can quickly multiply and spread when conditions start to warm up, he said. “One bag of infested grain can produce more than one million insects during a year, and these can

Mr Warrick said practical information and advice on grain storage pest identification and treatment is available via the GRDC’s comprehensive stored grain information hub at www.storedgrain.com.au.

REGIONAL SHOWS AND FESTIVALS

October 2018

Fun for all at the Alexandra Show NOTHING says family fun like a classic country show, and that is exactly what you will find at this year’s Alexandra Annual Spring Show. Celebrating 135 years, the event is promising to be bigger and better than ever. Held on Saturday, November 10, the show will include all those things you would expect to find, such as horse events, various cattle breeds on display, poultry competitions, working dog trials, dairy goat competitions and a meat goat competition. There is also a new art element in the wool section to encourage people of all ages to be actively involved - the competition is called “Ewe can do it and is open to all ages and abilities to create a flock of Murrindindi Made Sheep for all to admire. The Ladies’ Pavilion will be packed full of competition entries including jams, chutneys and preserves, along with cakes, handcraft, woodwork, local produce and everything in between. The Alexandra Annual Spring Show is one of the few to hold a dairy goat competition, and this year a meat goat competition that will be judged by the crowd on the day. Of course, if goats don’t tickle your fancy there is also the animal nursery – filled with all manner of baby cuties, from ducklings to chickens, piglets to lambs. There will be a roving balloonist, lots of free kids’ activities, and the much loved pet parade. So if you are looking for a fun day out, leave aside November 10 and get along to the 135th Alexandra Annual Spring Show.

BERENDS: John Berends is a company that has carved a reputation out of a difficult industry for quality and service.

Berends and Ag Ű

A winning combination

JOHN Berends is the kind of company you feel good about buying from. There are no cheap imports, no hastily slapped together implements – instead, Berends is a company that has carved out a reputation for quality over 50 years of operation. Started in 1966 by John Berends at a weatherboard house in Narre Warren, the company began manufacturing grader blades, rippers, car trailers and carryalls. Within eight years, the business moved to bigger premises until, in 1978, it

opened at its current location on the Frankston-Dandenong Road. John Berends Implements quickly became a favourite with farmers who were chasing someone that would stand by their products. In 1997, after completing a Bachelor of Agricultural Science and working in the vegetable seed industry for several years, John’s son Derrick joined the business as general manager. Always a family affair, Derrick’s wife Meredith brought her skills as an agricultural and resource economist to

the business in 1998. Since then, the company has continued to expand – and now includes a large retail showroom and factory workspace – complete with welding robots and a high speed plasma cutter. In a world where cheap imports are the norm, it is nice WR o QG D FRPSDQ\ WKDW VWLOO makes everything in-house, and stands by all their products. With over 50 years’ experience in the agricultural business, Berends is the benchmark in Australian agricultural machinery.

If you have been around horses for a while you may have heard the term ‘tying up’ or ‘Monday morning sickness’ in reference to sudden and often severe muscle disorder. So what is this condition and why does it occur? Rhabdomylosis is the more technical term for the disorder and basically means ‘muscle breakdown.’ Muscle breakdown (or necrosis) can be caused by many different things such as exercise or nutrition as well as traumatic or infectious causes. Rhabdomyolysis can cause a variety of clinical signs such as a stiff, shortened gait, reluctance to move, an obvious discomfort, sweating, as well as an increase in heart rate or respiration. In some cases horses may even develop brown coloured urine due to waste products from muscle breakdown being excreted in the urine.

If diagnosed correctly and treated appropriately rhabdomyloysis can be resolved. In horses that are predisposed to the condition careful management of feeding and exercise regime can be utilised to effectively prevent ‘tying up’ from occurring. Several important forms of rhabdomyolysis have now been found to have a genetic component to the disorder which can be diagnosed with blood tests and muscle biopsies. These are outlined below. Recurrent Exertional Rhabdomyolysis (RER) RER is an exertional or exercise related rhabdomylosis and has a genetic link in Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds. There can also be a dietary component to RER as there are links between an increased amount of carbohydrates in the

diet and the development of RER. It most commonly (but not always) affects females particularly those with a nervous or excited temperament (think of those flighty fillies!) Polysaccharide Storage Mopathy (PSSM) Horses with PSSM are very sensitive to the hormone ‘insulin’ and therefore are rapidly storing glucose from the blood into muscle reserves (as glycogen). In this way the body is behaving in the opposite way to somebody who has diabetes! Storage of energy in this way is the reason why horses with PSSM develop muscle breakdown. There is a gene linked to PSSM which can be found in Quartherhorses, Warmbloods, Draughthorses and Cobs
