IN THE FAMILY BALMATTUM Australian White Sheep Stud is more than just a business venture for farm manager Richard Boadle. It is a labour of love, and a tribute to his conviction in the breed, and perhaps most importantly it represents the transition of his family back onto the land and the farming life he loves. With daughter Kristen and son-in-law Grant the owners of Balmattum, the family with children William and Sissy now call Euroa home. Turn to page 4 for story.
Artists with Regenerative Farmers share vision of better future By EMMA OLIVER LINKING leading Australian landscape artists with regenerative farmers in Southern New South Wales, Earth Canvas: Art in Ag is a ground breaking exhibition, which opened at the Albury LibraryMuseum on October 24. With the exhibition running through until February 7, 2021, the body of work then goes on the road until 2022 visiting regional galleries in surrounding states before finishing up at the Australian National Museum in Canberra. From Swan Hill to Wagga
Wagga, Mildura to Mount Gambier, from Tamworth to Griffith, the 70 artworks by seven different artists will visit a total of nine galleries. Curated by the Albury LibraryMuseum, supported by the National Museum of Australia and assisted by the Australian Government’s Visions of Australia program, the exhibition showcases striking new work by prominent Australian landscape artists Ros Atkins, Jenny Bell, Jo Davenport, Janet Laurence, Tony Nott, Idris Murphy and John Wolseley. Artists were invited onto

properties to engage with a landscape managed from a regenerative farming perspective with the resulting artworks demonstrating that good land management is part of climate solution. Situated between the Murray and Murrumbidgee Rivers in Southern New South Wales, the six participating properties - Mundarlo, Mt Narra Narra, Eurimbla, Yabtree West, Yammacoona and Bibbaringa - vary in size with some of the bigger ones encompassing up to 20,000 acres of land under regeneration.

Cattle, sheep or cropping are the main sources of income on the properties, and the diversity of the landscape and the purpose were all taken into consideration when matching artists with farmers. With the farmers providing more than a residency for the project, the initiative was designed to be a collaboration between farmer and artist, and so a great deal of consideration was placed on matching personalities and ideals. Gillian Sanbrook, one of the driving forces behind the Earth Canvas project, discussed with the farmers what sort of art they
liked to also ensure a good match, and the resulting artworks speak for themselves as both artists and farmers bonded strongly during the process, and a sense of connection to the land is evident in all the images. Incredibly passionate on the subject of regenerative farming, Gillian Sanbrook has spent a lifetime farming thoughtfully with the last 13 years dedicated to regenerating the 950 acres that is Bibbaringa, a cattle property in Booma on the South West Slopes of the Wymah Valley in New South Wales. ■ Continued page 8

‘BIENVENUE dans notre haras’ is what Karen and Brian Morham’s Maine-Anjou bulls might just say if they met you on their property (and if they could speak). It translates quite simply from French as ‘welcome to our stud farm’. A rare breed in Australia the Maine-Anjou originated in France and when Karen and Brian added a Maine-Anjou bull named ‘Bully’ to their mob of Black Baldy cows, they fell in love with him and knew they wanted to purchase pure bred Maine-Anjou cows to join him. Growing up on a 20 acre farm in Yuroke, Victoria, Brian’s family had a mix of cattle including Black Baldy and Belgium Blues. A diesel mechanic by trade, he spent a decade with Komatsu before starting his own business which now contracts to mines in WA, but he always knew he wanted to run a farm when he had his own family. “I used to drive past a paddock with various commercial cow breeds and mixes and their calves were impressive,” Brian said. “I didn’t know the breed at that stage but I had a friend who knew the owner and I learned that they were Maine-Anjou. “Karen and I moved to Finley and bought a 50 acre farm and they were the only breed I was going to get to go over the Black Baldy so we could grow cattle to support our income,” Brian said. “But once we added Bully to our herd and fell in love with the Maine-Anjou breed, we changed our objective and

business plan to breeding stud Maine-Anjou cattle and Morham Maine’s was born,” Karen added. “We were happy with the calves and extremely impressed with Bully and his temperament and the Finley High School agriculture program helped educate and encourage our kids with preparing cattle for shows, which we did well in,” Brian said. “The breed itself is small in Australia, but they’re such a big, gentle breed; they’re so underrated in the cattle industry,” Karen said. “They have great early growth and are heavy boned and our kids have worked around them from a young age - Bully was very much a family member.” “They’re quite unique too, not only are they beautiful, but there’s huge potential to cross with a lot of different breeds,” Brian said. In addition to their stud cattle, Karen and Brian also breed Pugs and Jack Russell dogs and according to Karen, the Pugs are useless around the cows and have no sense of the danger they could inflict on them accidently. The Jack Russells also tend to chase the cows the wrong way and end up licking their noses the cows in turn seem to think they’re foxes and chase them. “We also have a sheep who thinks he’s a cow and has a
favorite cow that we keep him with all the time,” Karen laughed. Following their success of selling bulls and purchasing more cows, Karen and Brian moved from Finley to Lurg in North East Victoria and started to branch out and buy different bull semen to crossbreed with their own herd. “We wanted to go in a new direction and use unique genetics for our personal brand, rather than the same genetics being used on other MaineAnjou studs,” Karen said. “So we started importing embryos and semen from Canada from breeders with more than 30 years’ experience; we utilised their experience to provide new bloodlines here in Australia. “The look, thickness, size and colours were quite different so we needed to market ourselves differently to other Australian breeders but each of our stud stock has improved with each generation and by purchasing new genetics, it has allowed us to blend older original bloodlines into that mix as well. “Some of the old bulls date back to the 1970s and their semen, which can be stored for a very long time, has been sitting in nitrogen since their collection just waiting for a chance to create new lines from old; one of the exciting things about stud breeding is seeing what combinations you can produce. “The chances of successful artificial insemination (AI) are reduced slightly with age as sometimes the straw pops

HELLO: Karen Morham and husband Brian run a breed stud in Lurg with Maine-Anjou bulls, cows and heifers. PHOTOS: Kieren Tilly which can cause contamination of the semen upon thawing and we’ve had some successes and some failures with those older specimens.” Karen and Brian gained valuable knowledge and assistance while developing their stud breeding business over the years from not only those overseas breeders, but from fellow Australian cattle breeders and vets. “We have learnt a lot from just our own experiences as well and because we’re so attached to our cattle and they have such individual personalities, I have cried and felt great loss when some have moved on or died,” Karen said. “We used to run Black Baldys and cross with MaineAnjou but we now cross Angus with Maine-Anjou with great results (Maine-Angus),” Brian said. “We are now moving in line with market demand on black cattle and the Maine-Angus has showed great potential, with no calving issues - the resultant calves from the cross are very impressive.” “Their temperaments are awesome, we can walk into a paddock and pat them without them fearing us, we can manage and handle them without problems, I can tag a newly born calf without fear from the mother,” Karen added. “We like to see what a joining can provide - as in what a particular bull can create from a cow, we like to see what that union can provide in its progeny, is the progeny an improvement on its parents?”

SIMPLY THE BEST: Karen and Brian are status level 8 and ensure any animals brought to their property hold the same status. With around 50 female breeders (cows and heifers), 10 bulls, and approximately 50 young calves including steers, new calves are assessed after birth and chosen to be sent to market, sold commerically or kept - heifers will be used as breeding females on stud and bulls will be kept as bulls and semen will be collected from them at 16 months of age before being sold to a commercial buyer. Karen and Brian provide bulls, cows and heifers for stud and manage their herd to ensure that the structure, feet, temperament and genetics are free from faults, disease and genetic inherited traits, and they’re doing so with excellent results. “We are Johnes Disease free (which is a form of wasting disease in cattle), have a bio-security plan and we are the highest status level 8;
this means that we can sell to everyone but will not introduce cattle onto our property that are not a level 8 also,” Karen said. “Biosecurity is especially important and we take it very seriously because we are stud breeders and want to supply our commercial buyers with a disease-free animal. “A good stud breeder will keep good records, DNA their herd for inherited diseases, innoculate to prevent diseases, worms, lice etc, provide good husbandry and be prepared for any possible issues that arise. “We stand by our tagline ‘we won’t sell anything we wouldn’t buy’ in all dealings we have in regards to the sale of our genetics.” They are also members of Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) and the National Vendors Declaration (NVD) for
movement of cattle. To ensure success in stud breeding, Karen said that where and how cattle are kept is vitally important, as well as continually learning new skills, training with professionals and understanding the cattle themselves. “You need to provide good yards, adequate space and fences, electric fences to hold bulls, tagging apparatus, a vet fridge for injections, calf pullers in case of emergencies and a good vet,” Karen said. “But probably the biggest thing you have to know is how a cow or bull can behave; always be cautious around them because anything can happen. “Never be somewhere you shouldn’t, always anticipate where you are relative to where they are and what your first reaction would be.
“I’ve learnt to artificially inseminate cows and heifers, we can needle and administer medicines and draw blood when required and we can pull a calf if a cow has trouble calving if the vet is held up or unable to get to us in time.” “Our family have also broken in and led cattle at many shows; this involves grooming, cleaning and leading cattle with a halter,” Brian added. “We are starting to get a lot of repeat buyers due to the temperament, easy calving and great return on calves/offspring from our breeds and most of all, the Maine-Anjou and MaineAngus are easy to work with. “Our love for the breed, responses from our clients and the enjoyment for our part in preserving the Maine-Anjou breed in Australia keeps us enthusiastic.” “The Maine-Anjou are great mothers, great milkers and have such huge, individual personalities, they really are just the best cattle,” Karen added. “We have a lot of favorites Jenna, Fleur and Genevieve in particular are beautiful girls and show cattle. “They love us unconditionally, are each leaders among the mobs, great mothers and everything we want in the design of our stud brand. “We couldn’t be happier with the quality of the progeny we produce.” For more information on Karen and Brian’s stud breeding, visit: www. morhammaines.com.au.

Australian Whites runaway success for Balmattum By EMMA OLIVER THERE’S a lot to like about Australian Whites, and farm manager Richard Boadle is feeling more than positive about the direction in which Balmattum - a family-owned Australian White Sheep Stud located just outside of Euroa - is going. A purchase at the beginning of the year of 36 stud ewes in lamb to Tattykeel’s top sire, has already born fruit with 42 lambs on the ground, providing a welcome addition to Balmattum’s already strong breeding program. And with interest in the breed only gathering momentum, Richard is confident that this self-replacing meat sheep breed with its moderate frame and good muscle pattern is the way of the future. With no need for shearing and parasite treatment limited, the breed is easy-care with the added benefit of being polyestrous with good mothering skills and great milk production. And the potential of these high-performing, early-maturing sheep is being recog-

With genetics from the fat-tailed and haired Van Rooy, three other founda-
tion breeds were added to the crossbreeding program at the Tattykeel properties in Black Springs, New South Wales to develop the new breed that is now known as the Australian White. Tattykeel principals, the Gilmore family, used ge-
netics from their stud Poll Dorset and Texel ewes from their renowned flock along with White Dorper rams, to achieve what is quickly generating a reputation as the low-maintenance meat breed of choice. This sentiment was evi-
dent recently at the largest ever offering of Australian White sheep in the country, a massive achievement for a breed that was only launched in 2011 by the Gilmore family. Held in September, Tattykeel’s Australian White An-
nual Sale confirmed that the breed is not only a runaway success in Australia but overseas as well, with 226 sheep going under the hammer. Producing the highest averaging stud sale across all sheep and cattle breeds in the country, some of the stud rams made more than some of the best Angus bulls auctioned in New South Wales. Of the 26 stud rams offered, Tattykeel ET 190084 sold for a record-breaking $53,000, with the average sitting at a very comfortable $22,654. Offering 125 flock rams to the market, the quality stock commanded a $5922 average with a top of $9000. The 75 stud ewes - which included 60 scanned-inlamb ewes - also brought in an impressive average at $5922 with a $13,000 top. “At Balmattum, we have only ever bought top quality sheep from Tattykeel,” Richard said. “And the results are in the paddock, with one of our sires the son of Leader - Tattykeel’s previously top selling ram who generated $38,000 at sale four years ago. ■ Continued page 5

From page 4 “We have the ability to breed up the quality of our flock from the animals we’ve got, and intend to start AI this December, and continue to reinforce our reputation for quality stock and easy handling. “We would love our name to be synonymous with quiet sheep, and at the moment we are incredibly pleased with our conformation and black feet traits, and are just tweaking genetics slightly in regards to shedding. “We’re at total shedding now, but stud farming is a quest for perfection. Kristen Davey, owner of Balmattum, is Richard’s daughter and affirms what Richard is too modest to emphasise. “The sheep are absolutely beautiful to deal with, Kristen said. “And Dad has managed the temperament of them amazingly. “So they are shedding really well, they’ve got great looking feet and conformation-wise they are completely on the money. “We are not only lucky to have this knowledge and understanding of the breed in the family, but as our farm manager Dad is invaluable. Kristen has a lot to be grateful for, as it was Richard who found the property that is now Balmattum and created the opportunity for Kristen, husband Grant and children William and Sissy to transition to a country life. POTENTIAL: At ten months old, ram lamb Potential demonstrates the ideal coat before shedding. Kristen had left after school to create a life in Melbourne working for the last 15 years in IVF. It was not until recently that Kristen felt the desire to return to her roots and become part of the local community, and raise William and Sissy in the country. “I just really wanted to show the kids that there was a lot more to life than living in the big smoke, she said. “I wanted them to experience the simplicity and joy of it all, but also the reality of life on the land. “We’ve had to shoot a couple of ewes, and they’ve lost lambs along the way that they had as pets. “But we’re all loving this venture, and though we still have commitments in Mel-

bourne and I’m working remotely at the moment, the intention is to relocate here permanently. Kristen’s knowledge and understanding of genetics and artificial insemination is also proving hugely beneficial to the venture, and she is deriving a great deal of satisfaction from the stud enterprise. With husband Grant in construction his hands-on nature has also allowed for an effortless transition of his skills to the farm, developing and improving on infrastructure. And with Richard at the helm of Kristen and Grant’s Balmattum Australian White Sheep Stud, the possibility of a country life for the Davey family is a reality.

GLORIOUS: John Wolseley held a workshop for artists as part of the Earth Canvas project.
OPEN DAY: Visitors at a recent Earth Canvas Open Day at Bibbaringa in Bowna, New South Wales. Artist John Wolseley from Bendigo, Victoria talked about how he views the landscape at the property.
Artists with Regenerative Farmers share vision of better future ■
RIVER BANK: At Mundarlo, Albury artist Jo Davenport takes in the Murrumbidgee River with regenerative farmer Nick Austin.
From page 1 Located between Holbrook and Albury, Bibbaringa was one of the six chosen locations to host a significant contemporary artist as part of the Earth Canvas initiative. Staying on-farm between May and November of 2019, artists worked to complete a body of work that was then unveiled at Open Days on their respective host properties. With the Open Days taking place in November last year, the events were as much a celebration of the artwork as the farms themselves, and transformed Earth Canvas: Art in Ag from an exhibition into an entire project with workshops and individualised themes. With scientists and educators guest speaking about regenerative farming, a long table lunch catered for by local chefs with local produce, each artist exhibited their work and explained their interpretation of the land and the emotions that were inspired. The Earth Canvas initiative is an
acknowledgement that as the artists feels a connection to the land and views it from a creative perspective, so too does the regenerative farmer working on the larger canvas that is the landscape. “With regenerative farming there are no artificial inputs, it is about working with nature and respecting the entire ecosystem,” Gillian said. “There is a mindfulness of all processes and patterns, and an understanding of the impact we can have not only on our own landscape but beyond the boundary fence, by nurturing the ecology of the land to reflect what it was before development. “Regenerative farmers feel that the land talks to them, and they become part of the landscape - an integral part of the process - and it is this connection that we wanted to highlight in Earth Canvas. “As farmers who look at the landscape from a creative perspective, we wanted to invite artists onto the land to share their vision of creativity.
“What I have learnt over the last decade from the different perspective of artists is that the land is not just wheat and meat and fibre, there is an association with place and an attempt to capture the essence of the countryside.” For though there has been a prevalence of national parks and deserts and bleak terrain in Australian imagery, there has been less art created of actual working farms where the vision is more harmonious and at peace with nature. This vision of farms moving away from industrial style agriculture with its massive feedlots and broadacre grain production is part of the Earth Canvas: Art in Ag objective, hoping to drive momentum towards better land management. Albury City mayor Kevin Mack said: “We know that art can drive enormous economic and social improvements and by taking a creative approach, this exhibition can help to drive real change that will not only benefit the farm-
ers of the future but also create a healthier, more sustainable world for generations to come.” With Gillian Sanbrook quick to commend both artists and farmers for making the exhibition more than a reality - for making it a huge success with plans for future residencies and exhibitions with the hope that Earth Canvas: Art in Ag becomes part of Australia’s cultural calendar.
“In some of the regional towns that the exhibition visits, we have engaged a renowned local artist and paired them with a regenerative farmer in the area to participate in the project,” said Gillian Sanbrook, one of the driving forces behind Earth Canvas. Though not part of the greater travelling exhibition, their work will be exhibited alongside the main body of work in their home shire reinforcing the perspective from a local eye, and inspiring further community engagement when the landscape becomes a familiar one.

Regional statement lacks teeth - Haines
BERENDS The Largest Range of Australian Made Farm Machinery
INDEPENDENT MP for Indi Helen Haines (MHR, Indi), said last week’s first Ministerial Statement on Rural and Regional Budget Outcomes by Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack delivered more bark than bite. Dr Haines said the ‘biggest budget of a generation’ last week had provided the government with the opportunity to invest in and build regional Australia to its full potential. “But it was not realised,” she said. “In last week’s statement to Parliament the government told us the budget is perfect and the Opposition has said it’s a disaster. “But as an Independent, I can call it how it actually is. “And for regional Australia, this budget is a let-down because it looks backwards, not forwards. “I know the physical and emotional burn scar from last summer’s bushfires runs large across our communities, especially in the Upper Murray and Alpine areas. “Its impact on people and business in Towong and Alpine shires and in neighbouring local government areas like Indigo, Wangaratta and Mansfield has been huge. “The Deputy Prime Minister last week told us the government acted swiftly to deliver bushfire recovery from its $2 billion recovery fund. “But of the biggest single measure in the fund – the $448.5 million Local Economic Recovery Program – just two per cent has been spent. “The Deputy Prime Minister also said the government had provided funding for the forestry sector through

the National Bushfire Recovery Fund. But that’s not quite true. “Applications for this $41m fund have only just opened to our softwood timber industry and no money will get out the door for weeks. “That’s a problem because burned logs degrade if it takes too long to get the money to harvest and process them. There’s still timber rotting on the stump and in the mill. Dr Haines said positive measures the Deputy Prime Minister celebrated in his statement included JobKeeper, instant asset writeoffs, and cashflow initiatives for small business. “But these are generic policies for the whole country when regional Australia is facing specific challenges. Regional Australia needs a specific leg up,” she said. “An extra $2 billion for investments in water infrastructure is welcome, but the biggest threat to water security is shrinking rainfall because of a disrupted climate. “The latest projections from CSIRO show spring rains in our Ovens-Murray catchment in Indi could drop 36 per cent if we don’t have a decisive plan to deal with climate impacts on agriculture and our environment. “The $5 billion Future Drought Fund is an excellent measure that will put $100 million a year into regional economies. “It’s a better policy for the amendments Cathy McGowan brought to it when she was Member for Indi. But it’s important to say this Fund was announced years ago. It’s not new money. “Adding $10 billion to in-

frastructure spending in rural and regional communities across 10 years is a move for an ordinary year, but we’re in a year when we need to jolt the economy back into life. “In Indi we have 47 shovel-ready projects the government could fund today.” Dr Haines welcomed funding for local roads and community infrastructure across Indi’s nine local government areas and a new round of the Building Better Regions Fund. “But the $200m BBRF package is spread across five years,” she said. “This means just $58m of the $553m set aside for regional Australia in this budget – about 10 per cent – will be spent this year. This won’t create jobs here and now.” Dr Haines said Mr McCormack also championed in the statement the new $100m Regional Recovery Partnerships program to support regions hit by bushfires, COVID-19 and drought. “Indi’s had all three, plus three months of highly disruptive border closure, but North East Victoria has been excluded from this new program. “I took a call from Mr McCormack this morning offering to explain why North East Victoria was excluded. I look forward to that meeting. “I’ve worked hard since the election last year to ensure the government delivers on its election promises to Indi. “And I’ll be taking exactly the same approach to its promises in this budget – to ensure accountability, transparency and delivery.”

HAY & SILAGE CUT, RAKE, BALE & WRAP ROUNDS AND SMALL SQUARE BALES FERTILISER AND BULK LIME DELIVERED AND SPREAD STRONG RESULTS: Prices at the October cattle sale in Euroa were pleasing for producers.
Seasonal conditions sees bumper sales at Euroa cattle sales
By JOE ALLEN AGENTS combined to yard approx. 1400 head for the monthly store cattle sale at Euroa. The yarding was of very good quality and displaying plenty of weight and bloom. There was also a good offering of Autumn calves that would usually be seen in the December feature, which achieved huge results. Situated in the middle of a historically good spring across Victoria and further north, the seasonal conditions stood to the cattle both in condition and price. There was plenty of competition from all directions of the compass, underpinned by local producers, Goulburn Valley and Northeastern operators, as well as influences from Feedlots and South Gippsland grass fatteners. The sale was across the
board very strong, at times entering uncharted territory. The recent increase in the demand in the fat market resulted in a lift in heavier steers on last month. With the bulk of steers (pen lots) 400-500 kg making $4.55 - $3.85/kg. As we got down in the weight, the cents per kilo went into the stratosphere in a sense, and operating became a “dollars per head” style. 400300 kg steers was $4.55 - $5.00 + in places. Heifers had similar results - 350+ kg ranging from $3.70 - $4.30. Once we came under 350kg, the cents per kilo took and seen some tremendous results for weaner heifers. About 100 Angus cows and calves offered and met with strong demand up to $2900. A very pleasing result for a lot of producers who have put a lot of effort, emotion and money into keeping their stock through two
very tough seasons. Next sale is on November 4, then leading into our feature autumn drop weaner sales in December. pea/canola, faba bean/ wheat, faba bean/canola and barley/canola, Dr Mitchell said. These mixtures have been sown in different densities, ranging from a 50:50 mix where each species is sown at half its normal rate to 25:75 where one species is sown at a quarter and the second at three quarters of their normal rates. These are then compared with ‘monocultures’ where each species is sown at their full rate with no companion. Dr Mitchell said the crops have been sown in combinations to provide a mixture of functional groups - oilseeds, cereals and legumes. They are sown together to complement their use of nutrients, light and water. “This can be achieved via different root systems that access different spaces in the soil profile; different canopy structures that can maximise light capture and
provide physical support; and utilisation of nitrogen fixed by the legume component, Dr Mitchell said. “It is about synergy and the value of plants working together. “In the second year of our research the experiment is showing intercropping has the potential to increase yield, value and profitability in cropping regions of southern Australia. “In 2019, six out of eight mixes evaluated had a small, but positive yield advantage, up to 20 per cent, over the monocultures. In Australia, intercropping is not widely adopted due to perceived additional labour requirements and the added complexity of managing and harvesting mixed species. Dr Mitchell said new herbicide options available for a range of crops make intercropping systems a possibility for broadacre cropping.
INTERCROPPING: Canola is being trialled as one of the crops to determine the potential of intercropping in broadacre systems.

Planting seeds of possibility SUZIE Jacobs is passionate about helping her dairy community create a positive narrative for the future. Living the last 10 years in Ballendella, near Lockington in northern Victoria, Suzie wants to “plant the seeds of possibility” to enable the community in times of challenge. “From challenges, come opportunities,” Suzie said. “I want to share that mindset. “I want to help the community build capacity and resilience to change; to seek alternatives which help keep the community alive and vibrant.” Suzie said Lockington was a “wonderful, proactive community” which had faced its share of adversity: drought, flood, low milk prices, diminishing number of family farms, and now COVID-19. Suzie has planted her own “seeds of possibility” by undertaking diplomas and a leadership program to increase her ability to do more for her community and dairy industry. Describing herself as a “natural introvert”, the mother of three is glad she stepped out of her comfort zone to participate in the 2020 Loddon Murray Community Leadership Program (LMCLP). “I applied for the program for personal growth, to become the best person for me and my community,” she said. Sponsored by Gardiner Dairy Foundation, Suzie has found the leadership program “life-changing”. “As I drove away from the opening retreat in February, I said goodbye to my inner critic and welcomed my inner coach,” she said. Suzie said a common theme for effective leadership was the importance of self-reflection and appreciation of other people’s communication styles. “I am a lot more self-aware,” she said. “A lot of the presenters have spoken about leaders needing to know themselves. “Now that I am starting to understand myself, I can work on leading my community through change.” Suzie, who is East Loddon Food Share Program vice president, has learned to understand and value her innate style of leadership. “I see myself as a seed planter,” she said. “I am not a person who leads from the front, I push from behind.” While employed as Rural Aid community representative last year, Suzie encouraged rural communities to apply for the Tens Town Makeover, a $100,000 grant for town development. “I promoted the grant in a lot of towns, but not everybody was interested,” Suzie said. “I went into a business community meeting in Lockington and told them about the grant, and they applied.” To Suzie’s delight, Lockington Business Group was among Australia’s 10 successful grant recipients. “When Lockington received the grant, the business community was so thankful to me, and I said ‘I didn’t achieve this, you did all the work; you submitted the application, I just gave you the idea’,” she said. Prior to the Rural Aid role, Suzie and her husband were three years into operating a dairy farm in the region when the 2016 milk price crisis hit. They made a business decision four years later to cease operation. “Our business was in its infancy, so it was quite hard,” Suzie said. “I looked at it as we didn’t fail, but what could we do better?” For Suzie, doing better was advocating and supporting farmers through Rural Aid. Now she plans to support her community in more ways through the lessons learned in the LMCLP. Gardiner Foundation supports leadership opportunities for people working in the industry and in dairy communities because the vibrancy and health of dairy communi-
ties is as important as what happens on farm or in milk factories. While the leadership program has moved online due to COVID restrictions, Suzie continues to be inspired by the diversity of presenters, topics and participants in the program. She said she is “embracing every opportunity” to build her confidence, leadership skills and networks with the aim of inspiring her community to also “seek opportunities”. “The leadership program has opened my mind,” Suzie said. “I feel so empowered. “I want to empower others.”
OPPORTUNITY: Loddon Murray Community Leadership Program participant Suzie Jacobs is enabling her community in times of challenge.

Nothing stops a flying start Caitlin Smith achieving stellar thoroughbred goals at home and abroad during pandemic By PHILIPPE PEREZ EUROA’s Caitlin Smith hasn’t let a pandemic stop her on her quest to complete her Goldophin Flying Start Scholarship. Caitlin was chosen as the only Australian participant for the 2019/2020 class, travelling the world while taking part in a two year, full-time Management and Leadership training programme specialising in the international Thoroughbred racing and breeding industry. After being based in Newmarket in the UK, she moved across the Atlantic in January to spend six months where the “fastest two minutes in sports” - the Kentucky Derby - is run. “Our time in the USA consisted of completing an equine nutrition module at the University of Kentucky, a racing regulation and stewards course, placement at breeding and training facilities and workshops with Godolphin management,” Ms Smith said. “In late March as the pandemic worsened, we were given the option of returning to our home countries. I decided to return home to be closer to family in a very uncertain time.”
Ms Smith said it was disappointing to miss the Kentucky Derby and an externship opportunity which, would see her spend six weeks in New York with a leading trainer. But her course continued remotely, where she studied aspects of the industry that don’t involve working with horses directly - including financial accounting and legal modules. She also completed a business analysis for Tom Morley Racing, a trainer in New York who has completed the Godolphin Flying Start scholarship previously. While New York and Euroa are like chalk and cheese, her home town provided a useful base as she undertook her remote modules. “I was lucky to keep busy during the remote learning phase by helping my father with his training operation and the Campbell’s at Blue Gum Farm, Euroa,” Ms Smith said. “They were very generous in allowing me to help out with various aspects of their business. During this time I also spent two months with bloodstock auction company, Inglis in Melbourne.” Along with the hurdle of having the USA phase of her
A PASSION FOR HORSES: Euroa’s Caitlin Smith prior to her heading out overseas for the Goldophin Flying Start ship scholarship cut short and returning home, Ms Smith said the separation from her classmates and continuing the course remotely posed challenges. “Most of our class returned to our home countries including England, Ireland, France, Japan and myself here in Australia. Given this, it was difficult to schedule live lectures and collaborate for assignments, however technology certainly made it much easier,” Ms Smith said. “During the remote learning phase, we continued having lectures from USA industry leaders, held online. “While it wasn’t the same as meeting someone in person, it was the next best thing.” After many weeks though,
the course no longer stayed online - unbelievably Godolphin Australia with the help of peak Thoroughbred bodies were able to have Ms Smith’s classmates come from around the world to Australia in mid-September to continue the course in person. After completing their two-week quarantine in Sydney, the scholarship class moved to their home for the next six months in the Hunter Valley. The class visited the Darley/Godolphin farms based near the town of Scone and inspected some of Australia’s leading stallions at the likes of Coolmore, Arrowfield, Widden and Newgate Farms. Even though she’s not sightseeing the world with her studies, the high stand-

ard thoroughbred knowledge here at home will keep her busy through to the end of her the scholarship - Ms Smith’s next six weeks will see her based at the world-leading Yardman Park and Segenhoe Studs in the Hunter. She will then complete leadership courses at Macquarie University, head to key Sydney race meets later this year, and attend the Magic Millions yearling sales in January before embarking on a placement at a thoroughbred based business of her choice. Ms Smith said that she has valued learning more about the industry from her classmates as much as from industry leaders. “Being part of a truly international group is an incredible chance to broaden my perception of the world not only in the racing space but in general life. My peers are all very intelligent and driven individuals who each add significant value to the group,” she said. “I’m always learning from them, and we are as much of an asset to each other as are our mentors and industry professionals in each country. “I have learned the importance of diversity in business

and governance - it is critical to have an outlook that encompasses the bigger picture. Diversity is ultimately a catalyst for change and imperative for our industry.” Ms Smith is amazed at how many opportunities and career paths there were in the industry as she travelled and studied. And while she initially thought a hands-on training type role was achievable after she completes the scholarship, she’s also discovered a passion for the strategic development of the industry through education and the public engagement space. “We live in one of the most prosperous racing nations in the world and I want to safeguard that by improving our workforce and opening the industry up to the wider population,” she said. “I want to make racing more accessible to the general population by removing the barriers of entry and making our language more common. “I also want to address the skills shortage in the industry by creating industry funded education pathways that are definitive and offer stable and long-term employment opportunities in our industry.”

Camel Milk Co receives grant to ensure supply meets demand VICTORIA’S first licensed camel milk dairy farm will be able to significantly increase production thanks to support from the Victorian Government, supporting the investment in the purchase of a new pasteuriser and dairy filler facilitated with a $25,000 Small-Scale and Craft Program grant.
With all milk currently pasteurised on the Williams’ farm in Kyabram, the new system will enable the business to upscale their production, promote new products and access growth opportunities. Demand for camel milk has soared in recent years due in part to its growing popularity among
health-conscious consumers, but camels only produce a fraction of the milk that a dairy cow will produce. Megan and Chris Williams started Camel Milk Co Australia in 2014 with just three camels and now that number has grown to over 250, with more expected to join as
the calving season begins. Camel Milk Co Australia is working to keep up with demand, with industry figures saying demand for local camel milk has more than tripled in the last three years. Camel Milk Co Australia currently exports its products to Thailand, Singapore and Hong Kong,
and produces a range of products including freshly bottled milk, freeze dried milk powder and camel feta cheese. Alongside dairy products the business has also expanded into body care, finding a market for their artisanal camel milk soaps, lip balms and body butters.

New Morris air carts push seeding performance for Australian growers GROWERS keen to reach the next level in seeding productivity and efficiency will laud the latest additions and enhancements to the popular Morris range of air seeding carts. The manufacturer’s 9 Series air carts already are renowned for their accurate product metering and reliable section control technology to prevent overlap and, hence, save on seed and fertilisers, however, new larger models and a host of advancements now further improves their suitability for Australian growers. Duncan Murdoch with national distributor for Morris, McIntosh Distribution, said the larger carts and range of system refinements added up to a significant jump in functionality and performance for growers. Complementing existing 9 Series models set on regular, large and extra large chassis frames in tow-behind or between configuration are now three new models on double extra large frames. The Morris 9682 tow-behind or between cart offers 23,462 litres in two tanks, as well as the option of a 5000L (tow-between) or 7000L (towbehind) liquid tank, and
the Morris 9843 comprises 29,171L in three tanks also configured in tow-behind or between format, while the tow-behind Morris 91000 offers 35,380L in four tanks. With these larger carts, a complete liquid console system is also available to manage applications from trailing liquid tanks. Duncan said grower interest in larger, tow-behind and tow-between air carts was increasing in select cropping areas. “The most common request is a large tank for compound fertiliser and another for seed, plus a liquid tank, and some growers want three tanks plus a liquid tank,’’ he said. “Whereas other manufacturers can achieve similar capacities using multiple tanks, Morris achieves it with two or three tanks.’’ He said the 9 Series air carts included the optional, fully integrated GEN 5 Liquid Systems console for accurate and even liquid distribution. On larger models, this is also ready to plug and play into trailing tanks using the liquid ready option. “Growers running larger air carts are wanting 10,000-

“It’s great to work side-byside with another Australian company, as it allows both entities to benefit from each other’s product development. Duncan said the latest GEN 5 liquid delivery system featured a number of enhancements. “With the GEN 5 module you can run single and dual liquid applications, he said. “The new system has combined the on/off and control
valves into one single valve, so you can turn product on/ off almost instantly. “This has developed with the introduction of section control, which requires really quick on/off product control. The latest GEN 5 system is also compatible with Dosatron dosing systems. “This is really significant where products like Impact fungicide or zinc are included with liquid fertiliser,
Duncan said. “Compared with the previous GEN 4 system, it doesn’t need a return line and so prevents the dilution between primary and secondary mixtures. “It is very quick to regulate and now effectively stops the product returning to the tank. Integrated Morris blockage monitoring with the latest carts is now “section aware, eliminating nuisance alarms when used with the manufacturer’s Input Control Technology (ICT). “The system is aware when sections are turnedoff for overlap and so doesn’t give false alarms and it can be used with single and dual shoot air kits, Duncan said. Another feature with the latest Morris 9 Series air carts is instead of using flat fan divider heads, growers have the option of Australian-designed and manufactured, stainless steel, upright air kits, ensuring long life and consistent product delivery. For further information on the latest additions and developments with the Morris 9 Series air carts, growers can contact their nearest Morris dealer.

Innovation the key to the future of our timber industry TIMBER businesses with innovative ideas about using plantation timber and transforming operations away from native timber will be supported with grants from the Victorian Government. Minister for Agriculture and Regional Development Jaclyn Symes visited Wodonga manufacturing business XLam to launch the Timber Innovation Grants, which will offer up to $100,000 to help timber mills and harvest and haulage businesses explore shifting to plantation fibre or other timber manufacturing opportunities. “The success of Victoria’s forestry transition will rely on forging new paths and doing things differently,” Ms Symes said. “These grants will help businesses look at opportunities like cross-laminating timber, a technique used successfully by XLam.” XLam make a range of highly successful timber construction materials at their state-of-the-art facility, using a cross-laminating timber technique using plantation pine to produce building materials with similar properties to concrete but at a much lighter weight and with great aesthetics. Available through the Victorian Timber Innovation Fund, the grants can help

TIMBER GRANTS: Transforming operations from native timber to more plantation timber. timber businesses take an early step towards new lines of business or a different operating model. It is a key part of the government’s $120 million Victorian Forestry Plan to transition from harvesting native forests to a plantation-based sector. To support forestry and manufacturing jobs over the coming decades, new approaches need to be embraced to take advantage of available timber in the future. The Victorian Timber Innovation Fund is also funding the creation of the Gippsland centre of the National Institute for Forest Products Innovation (NIFPI). Several timber mills and harvest and haulage businesses have already taken up transition vouchers to have a diagnostic assess-
ment of their businesses to identify their strengths and opportunities for change. These new innovation grants will support interested businesses to take this further and look at new options for using plantation timber. “We envisage a different looking, more sustainable forestry sector using different fibres and making different products in different ways - the window for change is now and these grants can help identify options for the future,” Ms Symes said. Currently five out of six trees harvested in Victoria are from plantations and new timber plantations are being created in Gippsland through record investment in the Gippsland Plantations Investment Program.

Don’t risk crop failure - plan your ongoing surveillance activities AS this year’s winter crop reaches a critical growth stage, it’s time to do rigorous and regular surveillance to protect your growing crops from new weeds, pests and diseases. Grains biosecurity officer, Jim Moran, said that surveillance throughout the life of a crop will provide the best possible chance of identifying new weeds, pests and diseases early - just after symptoms appear - and will significantly increase the possibility of being able to eradicate the pest, and minimise crop damage and loss of income. “Whether it’s something new to Australia, or an established pest that’s new to your farm, there can be multiple impacts on productivity from weeds, pests and diseases without early interventions,” Jim said. “If you have imported fodder, grain or stockfeed lately from other regions onto your property, you need to be particularly vigilant about surveillance for germinating plants, new insects and disease symptoms. “Check the places where it was stored and fed to livestock, and in paddocks nearby. “There are many ways un-
WEEDS: Plan regular and thorough surveillance of your crops and at-risk areas of the property. wanted, uncontrolled and unclean arrivals can spread problems for you.” Weeds, pests and diseases arrive as seeds, eggs, spores and other microscopic particles. They are transported in and on soil, plant matter, machinery, work boots, vehicles, trucks, equip-
ment and livestock. “Once established, they can increase your cost of production through chemical applications, decrease yields through plant damage and delay, and may impact on the quality, price and marketability of your finished product, if you get one,” Jim said.
“A successful surveillance program is only possible if you have a thorough knowledge of the common pests of the crop(s) you are growing. “Whether it’s you, a family member or your agronomist who does the surveillance, knowing what’s normal to expect in your crop will help to identify, through elimi-
nation, any unusual weeds, pests and diseases.” There are numerous sources of excellent information on both common and exotic grain pests and diseases which support surveillance activity. Information is found in booklets, ute guides, fact sheets, web sites, social
media forums, various crop disease apps for mobile devices, and grower group publications such as e-newsletters. Key points: z Plan regular and thorough surveillance of your crops and at-risk areas of the property. z Listen for pest and disease risk alerts issued by various agencies and organisations. z Get diagnostic advice from an expert in weeds, plant pests and diseases. z Send samples of anything unusual to experts for analysis (eg to Agriculture Victoria and the Cropsafe program). z Download free copies of the Biosecurity Manual for Grain Producers and Monitoring Stored Grain on Farm booklet. z Install a biosecurity sign to help control movement of people and their vehicles onto your property. z Contact Jim Moran at Agriculture Victoria in Epsom on 0418 377 930 for advice. Fix Your Leach Drain Trusted by thousands for decades EcoCare has been treating wastewater systems across Australia for more than 20 years and helping families live odour and blockage free. EcoCare’s LD Kit is the most advanced solution to restore failing leach drains without the need for physical intervention.
LD KIT RESTORES LEACH DRAINS Clears Blockages
Eliminates odours
100% Septic Safe
EcoCare LD Kit works by tackling the underlying problems that cause odours and blockages. Most wastewater supplements add bacteria and enzymes which provide a short-term fix; EcoCare LD Kit restores balance to the entire ecosystem within your leach drain and tank so that problems are solved and they don’t return. With the optimal balance within your system, enough bacteria and enzymes are produced naturally so that you live odour and blockage free.
“After ten years usage we thought our septic trench had failed… the system appeared totally blocked and overflowed at the inspection pit. We assumed the only solution was to dig a new trench. While contemplating the pros and cons of such a huge job we decided to try EcoCare. Within three months our problems were completely solved. The trench is now draining freely and no more smells,” CONRAD

PREMIUM QUALITY: Old Kentucky Dream K104 took out top price of $11,000 to Prime Angus.
GENERATING INTEREST: Bellaspur Dusty Q40 is one of 17 Clunes Crossing Dusty M13 sons to sell at Bellaspur’s first on property sale in March.
Bellaspur Angus on-farm cow sale generates significant interest
By EMMA OLIVER BELLASPUR Angus held their first ever on-farm female sale recently on October 10, with 30 registered cows with spring calves at foot going under the hammer at the Violet Town stud. With a reputation for strong cow families that breed again and again, along with a general consensus that Bellaspur breed cattle that are not only quiet and fantastic to handle but are incredibly structurally sound, interest on the day was strong. With cows sold to Gippsland, the Western District, Benalla and the North West, 46
bidders across the state registered interest in the sale with the sale held on property and interfaced with Elite Livestock. With a top of $11,000 the sale average came in at $4690,with Bellaspur principal Brenton Sessions really happy with the results, and quietly confident that the stud was going into their first on-property bull sale in March with an impressive line-up of progeny. With a good run of sons from outstanding sire Clunes Crossing Dusty M13 coming up at the March bull sale, competition will be high for the thirty 18 month old registered Angus bulls.
Clunes Crossing Dusty M13 along with Prime Katapult K1 - now deceased - are the two sires who have stamped their exceptional genetics on the Bellaspur cow herd. For the last three years Brenton has retained all the daughters from these bulls and the resulting growth and quality of the Bellaspur herd has been tremendous, with first sons and daughters from Clunes Crossing Dusty M13 easily commanding $7000 and $10,000 respectively. Sitting at the top of the ABI index for a good three years, all the progeny from Clunes Crossing Dusty M13 display his strong genetics of posi-
tive eye muscling and marbling, with extremely high data sets ranking in the top for all indexes and growth. “Retail beef yield is high with all Bellaspur-bred cattle,” Brenton said. “Feed efficiency is something we strive for at the stud, so it’s all about minimising days on feed so we have this whole holistic profitability across all levels of the chain.” Involved in cattle genetics ever since he left school, Brenton started out as an AI technician at ABS Global Australia, before finally starting up his own genetics business out of Violet Town, importing and exporting se-
men directly from and to the United States, New Zealand and South America. Travelling all over Australia, Brenton is still heavily involved in numerous breeding programs, and has the first-hand advantage of seeing which genetics have worked and which haven’t. “I’m seeing the development in a six month old, in a yearling calf all at a farm level which does give me a bit of an advantage with my own enterprise,” he said. With such a thorough understanding of genetics, Brenton and the Bellaspur team have added some outstanding new sires to their
line-up, with Jarobee Mountaineer M166 and KG Justified 3023 added to the herd. “Jarobee Mountaineer M166 is possibly the best bull we’ve used with an all-round data set and phenotype,” Brenton said. “He rates extremely high for calving ease and his calves are easy doing with great thickness from day one. “Along with Kg Justified 3023 - who is regarded as a genuine foot improver - we’re in a really exciting place at Bellaspur at the moment, and are looking forward to showing what we are achieving at our upcoming bull sale in March.”

Silage inoculant or aerobic spoilage inhibitors - which one should I use? SILAGE inoculant and aerobic spoilage inhibitors are two options available for farmers to help improve the quality of silage. So how do they work and are they an option for this year’s silage season? Silage inoculants are the largest range of silage additives currently used in Australia. Inoculants are manufactured populations of desirable lactic acid producing
bacteria, which are essential to produce the sweet smelling, highly palatable silages that we like to make. When bacteria such as Lactobacillus and Pediococcus, are added to a harvested crop, they increase their own populations to support the naturally occurring bacteria and can help to out compete less desirable bacteria. This results in a quicker fermentation of the silage, which will rapidly preserve
the crop and reduce dry matter and quality losses. Suited to most forage crops, silage inoculants are very useful when a crop hasn’t reached the required dryness and needs to be ensiled quickly to beat poor weather conditions. The crop must not have been on the ground longer than three days. Any longer and the plant sugar levels will be too low for inoculants to work.
NPK LEAFSPRAY PASTURE AND CROPPING
When using inoculants, it is important to mix and apply them as stipulated by the manufacturer as each product has different requirements. Some products require a set time and conditions for the batch to build up bacterial numbers to the required level. Other inoculants that are freeze dried already have the required number of bacteria in the satchel and don’t need time to build up numbers. Make sure that inoculants are stored in a cool, dry place and avoid leaving them in hot conditions as they break down very quickly. Silage inoculants assist in the fermentation process of silage making, whereas
aerobic spoilage inhibitors work by delaying the onset of silage spoilage such as heating and mould growth causing lost dry matter, quality and palatability. If wilting and harvest of the forage occurs within one to two days and the stack or bales are compacted very densely and sealed airtight after harvest, aerobic spoilage inhibitors are not really required. Aerobic spoilage inhibitors are designed to be applied at harvest, just like silage inoculants, and require thorough mixing throughout the forage to work effectively. They can be very useful in maize and whole crop cereal silage.
They are also useful where pit silages require several days to feed out across a face or where silage is left in a total mixed rations (TMR) mixer or silage cart overnight. It’s important to consider what you are wanting from either product. If you wish to speed up the fermentation process, then silage inoculants are an obvious choice. If you have silage sitting in a silage cart or TMR for an extended period then aerobic spoilage inhibitors are the better option. The key thing to remember is neither product will improve the quality of silage if corners are cut during the ensiling process.

Lucerne hay rivals costly supplement diets AGRICULTURE Victoria scientists have shown that using lucerne hay as a feed supplement can improve the productivity and nutritional value of sheep meat in a changing climate. Agriculture Victoria scientist Eric Ponnampalam said this latest research further confirms more than a decade of studies that demonstrate adding lucerne to sheep diets provides a host of benefits. “This research is the first in the world to prove a diet supplemented with lucerne hay is equal to a feedlot diet,” Dr Ponnampalam said. “Climate change is causing the yield, persistence and nutritive value of pastures to decline in many parts of southern Australia, particularly during the summer and autumn months.” Supplementing diets with cereal grains, legume seeds or concentrates over summer and autumn can maintain animal growth rates during periods when pastures are sparse. However, supplements are costly and may cause digestive problems such as acidosis or bloating unless appropriate feeding strategies are maintained. Dr Ponnampalam said this project compared feeding a low-energy diet supplemented

SPARSE FODDER: Lambs on dry annual pasture have limited access to green feed and therefore less antioxidants (vitamin E) and essential fatty acids. with lucerne hay to a high-energy diet supplemented with a barley-oat grain mix, to both crossbred and Merino sheep. The results demonstrated that using lucerne hay rather than grains as a supplement had a range of advantages and didn’t negatively affect liveweight or carcass weight at slaughter of both breeds. “Lucerne hay is a win-win,” he said. “It maintained the animal’s body weight equal to the grain diet and was better at both providing essential nutrients and
preserving the meat’s red colour. “Colour is very important, as consumers don’t buy meat that has turned brown - the cuts are immediately removed from retail display and turned into mince or go on sale. “Our findings offer farmers a cheaper, home-grown solution to maintaining yearround productivity on-farm, particularly when faced with the impacts of climate change on their feedbase.” Dr Ponnampalam said farmers can harvest lucerne in spring, store it as a hay or
silage, and subsequently feed to livestock in summer and autumn when required. Therefore, farmers can sell larger carcasses at a lesser expense. “Lucerne is also easier for farmers to store than grain, and it can improve soil fertility via nitrogen fixation when used as a rotational crop,” Dr Ponnampalam said. “Our research is identifying lucerne as having the potential to be a ruminant diet, not only for sheep, but for cattle and dairy as well.”

MOST of our drought effected areas received a good drink over the winter months with rainfall continuing into what has been a humid spring. We can expect this to continue through to early next year with reports that La Nina is strengthening towards December. This means for those farmers who rely solely on mother nature for their water now have an opportunity to grow more feed and regenerate the soil at the same time. Last month we talked about how Activated Volcanic Mineral Based Fertilisers improve both plant health and stock health through increased cell structure. This month we want to highlight how mineral and trace element liquid and dry fertilisers can assist healthy clovers and pasture legumes to fix nitrogen into the soil. Nearly all of the nitrogen present in soil, originates from from the Earth's atmosphere. The CSIRO tells us that each hectare of the Earth's surface is covered by about 84,000 tons of nitrogen. However, it must be combined with other elements before plants can use it. The nitrogen in the atmosphere is of no nutritive value to plants with the exception of legumes which are able to use it through bacteria in the root nodules, as well as living organisms in the soil for plant uptake. Goode Organics can design a liquid or dry fertiliser program through the use of HealthyEarth fertilisers which have been designed from the ground up to provide plant strength and yield - as well as significantly improve - microbial growth for soil vitality. The Victorian Government has a longstanding and consistent position against buybacks and has worked hard to meet its Basin Plan obligations without taking more water from farmers. While no further buybacks is welcome, Victoria remains strongly committed to the socio-economic criteria agreed by Basin governments that guarantee projects with negative impacts for communities won’t proceed. Victoria has met - or identified projects to meet - its legal obligations for water recovery under the plan, with 800 gigalitres achieved and projects to reach its obligation of 1075 gigalitres under way. Any further recovery projects need to meet the strict socio-economic criteria. Victoria has also supported the Productivity Commission’s recommendations, handed down in 2019, to split the MDBA’s policy and enforcement functions to ensure no real or perceived conflict of interest. Victoria has led the way on compliance and enforcement, recently completing an independent compliance audit and introducing legislation to support a zero-tol-
erance approach to water theft - including tougher penalties and on the spot fines. In terms of the MDBA’s policy work there is much to be done - the Commonwealth, the MDBA and Basin states need to improve rules around floodplain harvesting and first flush events. In line with the Productivity Commission report, the 2024 timeline for the delivery of environmental offset projects should be pushed back so that good projects can be delivered. There is still significant work to do on deliverability to ensure proper operating rules and flow regimes are in place, so large amounts of water already recovered for the environment. “I welcome a greater emphasis on enforcement and compliance - our farmers have done the heavy lifting - and hard-earned water for the environment needs to be properly accounted for and protected,” Ms Neville said. Improved deliverability rules will also ensure water being delivered to irrigators can be moved through the system without causing environmental damage to rivers including the Murray and the Goulburn.

THE Commonwealth has adopted key Victorian positions on the Murray Darling Basin Plan, announcing there’ll be no buybacks as part of future water recovery and that the Murray Darling Basin Authority (MDBA) will be split. The State Government’s Minister for Water Lisa Neville welcomed the Commonwealth’s announcement, saying it was pleasing they had listened to Victoria’s position. “I’ve long argued against buyback,” said Ms Neville. “We know communities in Northern Victoria have suffered very serious socio-economic impacts from water buybacks - loss of productive water from farms, loss of jobs, loss of economic activity and associated social impacts.” Ms Neville said Federal Water Minister Keith Pitt had also assured her that on farm efficiency projects would not be part of future water recovery. “The socio-economic test will still apply for infrastructure projects to recover water - my position has always been that infrastructure projects that reduce system losses are the best way to recover water for the environment,” Ms Neville said.

Bumper crops bring CFA fire warning ly. CFA reminded farmers to ensure machinery such as headers are routinely maintained, moving parts and bearings are regularly inspected and cleaned of any material on hot engine components. “It should be part of everyone’s routine to check for straw or grass build-ups in machinery, to maintain its spark arrestors, and to take regular breaks when operating machinery to ensure it doesn’t get too hot, Mr Cook said. He also advised against driving vehicles and motorbikes through dry grass. “There is a risk your car exhaust system can heat up and ignite the dry grass underneath on hot days, Mr Cook said. “Farmers are usually CFA’s strongest advocates for managing fire risk as they know the consequences of fires starting on their properties and the risk to both their crops and machinery, and those of their neighbours. “Harvest time can be very dangerous and each season unfortunately we see machinery and vehicles spark fires in different parts of the state. CFA also reminded farmers to have adequate firefighting resources available in paddocks where harvesting operations are conducted. “Being fire safe on your farm should be part of any fire plan you have, Mr Cook said. Crop and Farm Machinery Fire Safety z The most common cause of harvester fires is material collecting on hot engine components such as the manifold, exhaust and turbocharger. z The key to avoiding har-
vester fires is diligence in clean-down and inspection. z Postpone paddock work during the highest fire-risk periods. On hot, dry days, exercise extreme caution before harvesting, grinding, welding, slashing or mowing. z Check the Fire Danger Rating against the Grain Harvesting Operations Guide before harvesting. z Check for total fire ban or severe weather warnings and current fire incidents and follow recommendations. z Avoid driving vehicles and motorbikes through dry grass or crop - the risk from the hot exhaust system is high. Driving vehicles with catalytic converters through dry grass and crops is particularly hazardous. z Take regular breaks. z Make it part of your routine to check for straw or grass build-up, and hot bearings. z Check machinery to ensure that spark arrestors are maintained. z Prepare a communication plan that includes family, contractors and neighbours. z Prepare strategic breaks to stop fires entering or leaving your property. z Run regular maintenance checks on farm machinery. z Monitor machinery regularly during operations. z Monitor weather conditions throughout the day and stop operations if it changes. z Have the appropriate firefighting equipment in place. You’re required by law, to have a 9-litre water pressured extinguisher on hand. z More info go to https:// www.cfa.vic.gov.au/planprepare/operating-farmingmachinery-equipment-andvehicles.

THE potential for bumper crops following decent winter rainfall is bringing joy to parts of Victoria, but CFA has warned farmers to take care when harvesting the welcome yields. Much of Victoria, including parts of the Mallee, Wimmera and far south west, is drier than normal, however, above median rainfall is forecast across Victoria during spring, which could result in greater crops and yield but also increased potential fuels if a fire was to start. On average, CFA crews across the state respond to more than 200 harvesting related fires every year. The predicted follow-up spring rainfall across parts of Victoria has many farmers now looking ahead to a successful harvesting season this year, eager to begin operations. CFA acting chief officer Garry Cook said fires caused by machinery and harvesting operations can be avoided if farmers and harvest contractors take care and follow the correct practices. “The key to avoiding harvester fires is diligence, Mr Cook said. “We know farmers will be working extremely hard this season to harvest their crops, but it is vital that they consistently clean and maintain their machinery, as well as inspect it thoroughly before and during use. “Hot and dry conditions are a particular concern for CFA; if it’s a high fire risk day, our advice is to postpone any work that was planned to be conducted in the paddock. “In hot and dry conditions activities such as harvesting, grinding, welding, slashing or mowing can spark fires very easily and they can become dangerous quite quick-

Horrific fires ahead - Aussie is ready T
emperatures are rising, wind events are becoming more violent, spreading fires faster. In these perilous times, Aussie Pump dealers are gearing up now to be able to support Victorian farmers with Aussie Pumps’ range of high pressure, lightweight, portable fire pumps. “We’re seeing more pump dealers sign up to distribute our products as they realise the quality and have similar philosophies to ours,” said Aussie Pumps’ Sami Syed. “They understand the product isn’t just to be sold but has to work.” The range starts with a lightweight 1” Ultralite and goes all the way through to big 4” pumps capable of extraordinary performance. THE SEASON AHEAD After last year’s “black summer” homeowners and farmers can be forgiven for thinking it couldn’t possibly get any worse. On the other hand, we only have to look at California where millions of acres have been burnt out, whole towns have been destroyed and many lives lost. Nobody is counting the cost of timber destroyed, or the impact on wildlife and the environment. Whatever it is, it will be devastating. We are facing similar issues in spite of conscientious fire authorities and the marvellous volunteer firies who put themselves in harm’s way every season, motivated by the need to protect their communities. WHAT MAKES A
HORRIFIC FIRE SEASON? Aussie Pumps believe it’s based on a combination of lethal circumstances. They include: z low humidity; z a succession of high temperature days; z a high fuel load in terms of brush; z strong and consistent winds. Last year we saw all of the above and this year similar conditions are shaping up. The resources required to carry out an adequate reduction in fuel load before the fire season is enormous. Prepping for the fire season creates a huge workload on the volunteers, right across the country. Stores are stocking up with Aussie Pumps products and will be able to offer a full range across their branches to support homeowners and farmers. They stress the need to get prepared now, early in the season, conscious of the fact that everybody, not just Aussie Pumps but all other suppliers in Australia, ran out of pumps last season. MURRAY VALLEY RURAL SERVICES Located in Berrigan and Yarrawonga, the team at Murray Valley Rural are part of the CRT network. They stock Aussie Pump products as they are an Australian owned business that provide an extensive range of products, designed to perform in tough Australian conditions. The basis of the product’s design criteria and Aussie Pumps’ ISO 9001 quality standards are all wrapped up
MANSFIELD: Brett, Anthony and the team at Mansfield Pump Shop & Electrical are fully stocked up with pumps and hose options to service all your fire protection needs. in a very simple concept to produce products that would suit Australians and to sell them at a fair price. Murray Valley became an Aussie Gold Distributor because of the extensive range and dealership network. “We love their high product quality and product guarantee, value for money products,” said manager Graeme McInness. The Aussie Fire Chief has proven performance, a high quality build and presentation, and is well priced vs other Australian made pumps. “We expect a rapid increase in fuel loads leading into summer will result in another high risk fire season,” he said. MANSFIELD PUMP SHOP & ELECTRICAL Located in Victoria’s High Country, Mansfield has had a roller coaster of a year. They recently signed up with Aussie Pumps as they wanted to give their customers first world products.
“We are very lucky to be situated in a high growth, high tourism area and are eager to service the needs of any customers that are permanent or holiday property owners,” said managing director, Brett Ramsay. The Aussie Fire Chief is a big seller as the pressure is unbelievable for a single impeller pump. “I can’t fault the build quality,” said Brett. WANGARATTA PUMP SHOP The team at Wangaratta know that when they sell the Aussie product, they can have confidence. They know it will do what the specification says and is built with first world quality components. “We are hoping this fire season is not as bad as last, but it is always best to be prepared and always have well maintained and reliable equipment in the ready,” said manager, Brendan Smith. “Recent rains have made the grass grow well and once

The demand for export has been sharpened by the catastrophes in Europe, Indonesia and the United States, putting the company under pressure. THE HONDA CONNECTION Take a look at the Aussie Pumps video on their website “5 Reasons to Choose an Aussie Fire Chief”. You will hear the story of how Honda supported the company in the very early days, providing engineering guidance and support with engine matching and advice. AUSSIE’S 5 YEAR WARRANTY The only company in the world that offer a five year warranty on high pressure
firefighting pumps is Australian Pump Industry. The company’s QP range (Quik Prime) self priming engine drive pumps all come with a pump end five year warranty. Honda supports the company with their three year engine warranty program, available to Aussie buyers through any authorised Honda dealers. FREE BUSHFIRE SURVIVAL GUIDES All Aussie Pump dealers have got thousands of Aussie Pumps’ free Bushfire Survival Guides. The guide can make all the difference between saving your property, maybe your crop, livestock, pets and even your life. It is a practical way of prepping for the fire season and stresses the decisions have to be made early if there is any intention to stay and protect the property. Families urged to stay safe around hay A NEW video and poster launched by Feed Central for National Hay Safety Day on Sunday, October 25 is aiming to stimulate family discussion about hay safety. Feed Central general manager Cieran Maxwell said the You Tube video and free poster were a timely reminder that making and storing hay can be a risky business. “Every farming family and team need to be thinking about hay safety,” Mr Maxwell said. “We’re in the middle of the season so it’s an opportune time to remind everybody that hay can be dangerous.” The video features Ted Ford, the 8 year-old son of Feed Central managing director Tim Ford, doing a mock hay inspection. The video and poster touch on five key themes: baling up good bales; storing your hay well; preventing fire; moisture checks; and taking care when stacking, loading and handling hay.
HAY SAFE: It’s that time of the year again, and Feed Central has launched a campaign centred on hay safety. “Our poster and video are designed to encourage discussion around hay safety with your family and team,” Mr Maxwell said. “They are not a comprehensive list of every risk associated with making and using hay but we hope they can stimulate discussion and improve safety awareness.”
Mr Maxwell said a lot of family members get involved in hay production. “It’s a labour-intensive harvest and everyone should be talking every day about the risks and what can go wrong and how to prevent accidents,” he said. Feed Central is also urging parents to make sure their children don’t play in hay sheds. “The days of young kids playing in the hay stack are long gone,” Mr Maxwell said. “It can be fatal if one of the modern big square bales falls on you.” The video can be found at https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=Pcnox9gexOw&feat ure=youtube. People can access the poster from the Feed Central website www.feedcentral. com.au or by ringing Feed Central for a free copy. Feed Central aims to connect buyers and sellers of fodder and buys, sells and tests hay, grain, silage, straw, by-product and fertiliser.

Connections Project is delivering for Goulburn Murray irrigators THE Victorian Government is delivering the benefits from the Connections Project directly into the hands of farmers - fasttracking the issue date of water shares and financial payments. Minister for Water Lisa Neville has accepted the recommendations on how to deliver irrigators’ share of water savings from the Connections Project - getting more water to farmers faster, so they can plan their next season. “We always said that the Connections Project would see more water handed directly to Goulburn Murray irrigators,” Ms Neville said. “This announcement gives everyone in the region the certainty they need to plan their next season.” Following extensive consultation, irrigators in the Goulburn Murray Irrigation District will receive either water shares or financial benefit - based on the delivery share they hold. Those with water shares will now have their entitlements issued in October 2021, before the peak irrigation season, along with any water allocations which would have accrued against
MIGHTY MURRAY: There will be no buybacks as part of future water recovery. these entitlements since July 2021. The water savings will be available to irrigators as a mix of high and low reliability shares which will equate to 75 gigalitres of long term annual average yield. Melbourne water retailers will receive their final share of the savings after irrigators. The interim distribution they have been receiving from the Connections Pro-
ject in recent years will continue to be available on the market. Around half of all water users have a very small stake - less than .25 megalitres per day of a delivery share -which, when combined, add up to roughly two per cent of total volume. To get maximum benefit from these smaller shares, these entitlements will be combined and users given a one-off payment as a credit
to their water bills in early 2022. This approach builds on the Irrigators’ Share Consultative Committee proposal that underwent extensive community consultation in April. Minor changes were made to the initial proposal following sector feedback. During the six week consultation, meetings were held with each of the water service committees, as well

as several virtual town hall meetings with 100 participants. In addition, 4000 people visited the website to read the proposal and there were over 200 surveys and submissions provided. The overwhelming majority of feedback identified this method as the most practical, fair and sensible approach to distributing the irrigators’ share and delivering on prior commitments.
The Connections Project is the biggest investment in irrigation infrastructure in Victoria’s history securing the future of irrigated agriculture in the Goulburn Murray region and delivering significant benefits for irrigators, Melbourne’s water corporations and the environment. The project is on-track to complete works in October 2020 and has already delivered on Victoria’s Basin Plan obligations - avoiding further Commonwealth buybacks. “This is a significant step in delivering an upgraded and modernised Goulburn Murray Irrigation District,” Ms Neville said. “We’re already seeing the promised benefits to the environment and urban water security, as well as irrigation supply.” Delivery shareholders are encouraged to review and update their details as soon as possible to prepare for the issue of water shares. More information on how benefits will be distributed are available at water.vic. gov.au/water-for-agriculture/irrigators-share-distribution.

Snake Bite TUESDAY "KING VALLEY RUN"
THURSDAY "BEECHWORTH, MYRTLEFORD RUN" PRE-BOOKED VETERINARY WORK
As the weather warms up we’re starting to see snake bites again. Snake bites in Australia have the potential to be lethal to all species of domestic animals, but we most commonly see them in dogs and cats as they are the ones most likely to try to interact with a snake. Signs of snake bite in dogs can include an initial vomit, followed by collapse or difficulty walking. Excessive salivation, difficulty breathing, dilated pupils, and red urine may also be seen.

It is very rare to see a snake bite mark on pets, so don’t waste time looking for one. It is not important to identify the snake as veterinary clinics in Victoria use a multivalent antivenom which covers all our potential snake species. Don’t try to catch the snake for identification. All vet clinics have snake antivenom on hand for emergencies, but it must be given as soon as possible in order to have the best result. If you see your dog or cat in close contact with a snake, take them to a vet immediately.
Dogs may appear to temporarily recover after an initial collapse, but will then deteriorate again.
This is important even if your pet is not showing any symptoms, as sometimes the signs can be delayed.
Signs in cats are generally an odd gait, which then progresses to an inability to stand and walk.
Ring ahead to let them know you are on your way. Time is of the essence, so do not take a wait and see approach, particularly if you live out of town.
Cats often try to hide when they feel unwell, so if your cat goes missing check under bushes and sheds as they may have crawled somewhere and be unable to move.
Most pets can be saved with antivenom and intensive care if they receive treatment early enough.
