Move to gather evidence for Prosecco BY ANITA McPHERSON amcpherson@ nemedia.com.au

WINE industry bodies have welcomed news the federal government will fund research to help clarify the legal basis for protecting geographic indications for wines such as Prosecco in trade agreements. Monash University researchers received a Federal Government grant of $100,000 through the Australian Research Council’s Linkage Projects, to present evidencebased recommendations on geographical indication claims to Australia’s government and industry bodies. It follows European Union (EU) attempts to protect Italian wine producers from international competition by claiming Prosecco as a geographic indicator (GI) rather than a grape variety, and prohibiting its use in marketing by all producers of the sparkling wine outside northern Italy.

GRAPE EXPECTATIONS: With harvest time approaching, local growers of Prosecco await the outcome of free trade agreement negotiations.

7KH UHVHDUFK WHDP RI o YH includes Professor Mark Davison, who said if Prosecco is the name of a grape variety and not a geographical indication, the prohibition of its use in trademarks on Australian Prosecco would be likely to contravene sections of the “Technical Barriers to Trade Agreement”, or TRIPS agreement.

“We’re grateful to the federal government for their o QDQFLDO VXSSRUW WR KHOS XV develop a legal framework and associating guidelines for protecting geographical indications for wines, and to help Australia and its wine manufacturing industry deal with geographical claims,” he said. Australian Grape and Wine

Incorporated (Australian Grape & Wine) chief executive Tony Battaglene welcomed the additional research funding, saying it will expand on previous work undertaken on Prosecco and delve deeper into the legalities of GI protection for wine. He said given many busiQHVVHV KDYH PDGH VLJQLo cant investments in Prosecco

plantings, infrastructure and branding, and the widespread interest in GIs in the context of the proposed Australia – EU Free Trade Agreement, it is clear the research “is in the national interest”. Australia’s Prosecco exports are worth $60 million annually and are predicted to rise to $500 million over the next decade.

Wines of the King Valley said it continues to work with Australian Grape & Wine to represent its objection to the protection of Prosecco as a GI in Australia. The organisation says public consultation by the federal government on the issue concluded in November last year, and it’s been informed the number and quality of Prosecco submissions received by Australian wine producers - including those from the association and its members was the highest of all food and spirit products. President Dean CleaveSmith said it had received strong support from all levels of government in relation to the EU claims around the term Prosecco. “This further funding demonstrates that the government remains committed to working towards a positive outcome for the Australian Prosecco industry,” he said. The next negotiation with the EU is scheduled for February 2020.

“They’ve lost perennial pastures and even feed wedges, but it’s not just physically getting grass to grow, it’s all the work that goes with it, all the machinery, and infrastructure and power requirements. “So the plan for the future is primarily a case-by-case basis, where all the needs are assessed to ensure producers can get back to business as usual. “In regards to getting businesses back on their feet, we MXVW QHHG SURo WDEOH IDUPV “If we can get back to a position where farmers receive a decent margin on their milk then they’ll stay in business, and if they don’t then they won’t be able to survive. This sentiment is echoed by Kylie Holmes the executive officer at the Rural Financial Counselling Service in Gippsland, who acknowledges it’s not just dairy farmers who are doing it hard it’s across the board for those in agriculture at the moment. The cost of feed and water has all primary producers doing it tough, with even those producers who were viable before the drought having to draw down on all their cash reserves to get them through. And for those who have EHHQ o UH DIIHFWHG LW KDV served to exacerbate the impact the drought has already had on their livelihoods. “It’s the farmers who have

destocked to get through the drought, just holding onto their breeders and this is the stock that they have lost, Kylie said. “They’ve spent so much effort and money keeping these animals alive and now they’re gone, and many of these farmers are at a tipping point. “So even though on the ground, we have Ag Vic, the VFF, Dairy Australia all there and willing to provide technical support and assist with future planning, the question is ‘Do the farmers have the capacity and the willpower to continue on anymore?’ “Because this is the biggest thing having gone through the drought, to then have to contend with this disaster, people are absolutely devastated. “It’s the last thing they want to deal with, and quite honestly some are broken, and the last thing they need to be doing is making decisions right now. “So my main concern for initial and ongoing support and assistance, is somebody for farmers to discuss things with and to get advice. “At the moment the concentration is on cleaning-up, and farmers aren’t ready to make plans. However, Kylie does believe that it is paramount for farmers to contact their bank as one of the initial steps as there are immediate packages and assistance available.

“The next steps are small; farmers need to go to trusted sources and begin to formulate a plan, and then if they have the energy, the drive and the capacity to rebuild then that’s what they should do, Kylie said. “Everything at the moment is in a very sharp bleak reality, and though there is an inp X[ RI IXQGLQJ DQG UHVRXUFHV about to hit the ground, this is the time for many to make their mental health and wellbeing the priority, and all deFLVLRQV WR p RZ IURP WKHUH y With this as a necessity, mental health and available counsellors and appropriate boots on the ground are fundamental to supporting the agricultural community after the trauma of recent events. LETTER TO EDITOR

Seeking ongoing funding for regional fruit fly program I WISH to inform your readers that I have written to the Minister for Agriculture seeking continued funding of the Goulburn Murray Valley Regional Fruit Fly Program (GMVRFF). Our region is a significant horticultural producer, an industry that supports 5000 jobs and is valued at $762.5 million. Fruit production in the region feeds families across Australia and the economic reliance of the industry extends to processing, packaging, transport and tourism. The program has successfully reduced Queensland Fruit Fly (QFF) populations by 60 per cent from 2017 to 2019, this year receiving the Regional Achiever of the Year Award as further recognition. Despite these incredible successes, Queensland Fruit Fly pose a serious and ongoing threat, and continued financial support from the government is essential to sustain protection of the industry. I have asked the government to provide immediate reassurance to our region by confirming ongoing funding of the GMVRFFP for the next three years and will keep communities updated. “People may be uncomfortable sitting in a room, or with the concept of seeing a therapist, whereas the experiences gently guided by a facilitator with the horses allow things to surface in the moment and allow for that self-realisation and increased awareness which all enable change and support positive mental health. Change begins at the Wellbeing Paddock with an initial session that doesn’t involve the horses. It is an intake and assessment session which determines the direction the therapy needs to go. The horse work is woven into WKH oUVW IHZ VHVVLRQV WR HQVXUH both clients and horses are safe, and hierarchies of the herd explained so that the client can tune into each horse and the dynamics and keep safe. Horses have large limbic brains which allow them to be highly attuned to other horses within their herd, the environment and any other animal or human. This enables them to determine behavioural and emotional responses to a situation keeping them safe. With eyes on either side of their head, the horse can almost see in a 360 degree radius, and as well as seeing broadly horses are highly attuned to feeling broadly. Being herd animals and nonpredatory, the survival instinct in horses is strong and their awareness acute of variations in emotion, action and response. With this in mind, when a horse comes into a client’s space at the Wellbeing Paddock, it is responding authentically, non-

judgementally and directly to the client. “It is a strong, solid, purposeful moment, and the motive is the client, Jane said. “There is no agenda, they haven’t been trained to look for treats or been hand-fed, they are simply inquisitive and authentically present. Clients are often drawn to a particular horse, or at times Jane will direct them. And then there are the moments when the horses themselves make the choice. Winnie, a Welsh pony, was originally anxious and highly VWUXQJ DQG IRU WKH oUVW months that Jane had her you couldn’t touch her without her shying away and physically balking. But under Jane’s consistent care, removed from the stress of her previous life, and existing within a healthy herd dynamic, Winnie has healed herself just as people can when they are given supportive, nurturing care within healthy relationships. “When Winnie enters your space, and gently places her head to your head, the realisation that this pony has seen, responded and chosen you is an absolute privilege, and hard to even quantify, Jane said. And as Winnie offers up her face as a gesture of trust and engagement, Scout, an aesthetically striking quarterhorse, is a more playful and curious companion. Jersey Australia to help devastated farmers JERSEY Australia and Global Impact Supremacy joined forces to launch a fundraiser for the Salway family and other farmers devastated by the country’s bushfires. Robert Salway, 63, a long-term Jersey Australia member, was killed alongside his son Patrick, 29, as they were trying to protect their farm at Cobargo, New South Wales. Funds raised during the drive at International Dairy Week (IDW) will be donated to the Salway family and the Dairy Industry Bushfire Relief Support Fund. Jersey Australia chief executive officer Glen Barrett said there had been strong industry and member support through the donation of products, including animals, semen, cheese hampers and other goods. “These fires have been devastating for all Australians and particularly hard for farming communities, Mr Barrett said. “Robert and Patrick Salway were much loved members of the Jersey family and this was the least we could do to support their families, he said. “And our concern goes beyond our membership and the Jersey breed. “Our entire dairy and farming communities have been devastated by the impact of these fires. At the start of the Global Impact Supremacy Sale at IDW on January 21, a Casino pregnancy due in July out of Lightning

From sustainability to regeneration: a biodynamic approach PROPONENTS of biodynamic farming believe that the biodynamic approach can help mitigate climate change by rebuilding the soil and implementing regenerative farming practices. The challenges posed by a changing climate compel us to relearn some ‘survival strategies’ for farming in Australia and move towards sustainability and regeneration. Biodynamic farming is a holistic approach to agriculture and gardening which could be categorised as ‘premium organic’. Biodynamic philosophy was developed in the 1920s in Germany by Rudolf Steiner. Steiner’s philosophy treats the Earth as a living, integrated organism and recognises the relationship between the earth, soil and cosmic forces. Nature is tied to these cosmic forces which enliven soil, plants and ultimately humans, through the food we eat. Biodynamics is like organics, no pesticides RU DUWLo FLDO FKHPLFDOV DUH XVHG EXW LW LV WDNHQ a step further. Biodynamic practice focuses on nourishing the microorganisms in the soil using special preparations. This approach enables plants which feed off the soil biota to grow vigorously and to their maximum potential. Plantings are also done according to moon and planetary charts. When one considers that the moon conWUROV WKH WLGHV LW V HDV\ WR LPDJLQH WKH LQp X ence the astral bodies have over plant life. There are many examples of the successful biodynamic farming from all over the world. Biodynamic principles can be applied to both large and small scale agriculture to improve the nutritional quality of crops and decrease animal and plant diseases.

THE NEXT GENERATION: Encouraging farming to move towards sustainability and regeneration.

If you would like to learn more about biodynamics, Australian Biodynamic Victoria Inc will be conducting an 8-week course on Sustainable Gardening and Farming using Biodynamic Principles. The course commences in February 2020 and will be held at the Yea Community Centre.

Australian white sheep with a bright future BALMATTUM Australian White Sheep stud, formerly known as Currumbene of Milawa, is now located in the thoroughbred horse country of Euroa. Located at 146 McKernans Road and originally part of Ealing Park, the farm at present is set up for running horses, with many paddocks connected by laneways. Managed by Richard Boadle who established Boadles Chaff in 1975, the property is owned by his daughter and son-in-law, Kristen and Grant Davey, who are in the process of building sheep yards, sheep proofing fences and improving the water supply at the enterprise’s new location. The original stud was established seven years ago on top quality ewes bought from Tattykeel and Campden Park studs, and Balmattum also have two stud sires, both sons of Leader the record breaking $38,000 ram. The Australian White Sheep breed originated at Tattykeel in Oberon, New South Wales about 20 years ago by taking the best genetics from the Poll Dorset and Texel, and incorporating these with Van Rooy

TOP QUALITY EWES: Hardy shedding sheep, Australian White Sheep genetics are a mix of Poll Dorset, Van Rooy and Dorper. and Dorper breeds by using AI resulting in about 20,000 embryo transplants to get to the breed today. They are hardy, shedding sheep that require no shearing or crutching and have exceptional growth rates and excellent conformation. In recent years the breed has been winning the carcass competitions, with the meat also being high in omega 3 with a very low melting point for the fat resulting in tender moist roast dishes. As a result, potential clients have shown great interest in the breed especially those with a small hobby farm supplying their own meat for the table.

Enthusiastic about the huge potential of Australian White Sheep, the Balmattum stud plans to continue exhibiting this amazing breed at the Seymour Expo. With the drought having had a disastrous effect on ewe numbers throughout Australia, the price of rams has also been adversely effected and subsequently the stud is budgeting on $1500 for their top commercial rams at sale. The contact for the stud is Richard Boadle on 0428 953 044 or Grant Davey on 0458 055 023 and the email is richard.boadle@ bigpond.com.

Fruits of the labour at Koala

By EMMA OLIVER

AT Koala Cherries in Yarck, the yield is down but the quality is up. It’s been a clean fruit year, and Simon Rouget, co-owner and Chief 3URGXFWLRQ 2Io FHU DW WKH RUFKDUGV has experienced high pack-out rates with a larger percentage of fruit going in the box, with minimal waste. Prices are good, and the fruit is relatively defect-free due to the absence of rain at harvest time. But though the fruit may be of premium quality, the national yield is lower than even the industry expected, and with a large export market taking a fair bit of the crop out of the system, cherries have been a bit scarce on the domestic market. :LWK ZHDWKHU HYHQWV DQG o UHV decimating cherry orchards in the Adelaide Hills, cherry growers have not been spared the ravages of the season, and with Koala Cherries entering their highest risk period for o UH 6LPRQ LV XQGHUVWDQGDEO\ FRQ cerned. But with the majority of the fruit harvested there is relief in knowing that efforts can now be concentrated on defending the orchards should the situation arise. Defending the cherries is a major undertaking for the Rougets who LQYHVW VLJQLo FDQWO\ LQ DQ DUUD\ RI technologies and systems to combat the bird problem which inevitably comes about when the fruit ripens. 7KLV \HDU KDV EHHQ PRUH GLIo cult than previous years, with parrots even eating the buds in winter which in past years was never an issue. And Simon believes this is a direct

result of the current conditions. “There have been heaps of birds this year and I believe some of these birds have migrated south, and the result is a lot higher pressure on the orchard than other years, Simon said. “Around Shepparton they haven’t grown the usual crops because of the cost of water, and in other areas the crops have failed, and so the orchards become the only green bit in the landscape, and attract the birds and the insects. Should the Rougets not employ a variety of means to detract the birds, Simon knows a huge percentage of fruit would be lost. And as it is, even with employing 15 staff members around the clock responsible for pest control, Koala Cherries lose whole outside rows of cherries and the corners. “We struggle to protect these areas, and the birds sneak in and out without you even realising, Simon said. “It’s dawn and dusk that are also SDUWLFXODUO\ GLIo FXOW DQG VR ZH UH constantly trialling new methods to address the issue. “We bought three drones this year to try. “Two to three years ago we also trialled drones, but didn’t have a huge amount of success keeping them in the air and found them TXLWH GLIo FXOW WR RSHUDWH “This year, I have mixed feelings about them. “They are effective for the time they are in the air, however the batteries only last 25 to 30 minutes and then we have to land them and change the batteries. “There are cameras and speakers

on them, and we can play distress calls and bird noises, and when WKH\ UH XS DQG p \LQJ DQG ZRUNLQJ WKH\ GR PDNH D VLJQLo FDQW GLIIHU ence. “However, this is also relevant to how many birds are in the orchard. “Most days they will just clear out when the drones appear, but if there are a lot of birds around, they take more risks and seem to believe there is safety in numbers. “Then the drones almost become a source of interest and some birds are attracted to them. The drones are also costly and incredibly labour intensive to operate, and so the Rougets employ a combination of measures to combat the problem. There are mannequins and

VSHDNHUV LQ o HOGV FRQVWDQW SDWURO ling, and the use of motorbikes and horns. Propane cannons have provided a degree of success, but the problems with noise complaints and FRQFHUQV ZLWK WKHP FDWFKLQJ o UH have deemed them more a hindrance than help. Permanent netting does work, but is not completely satisfactory. “The netting changes the way the fruit grows and ripens, with the area becoming somewhat of a microclimate, with the quality of the fruit subtlety effected, Simon said. “The lack of uv reduces the sugar levels in the fruit, and the yield has also been down on the netted trees as the bees don’t like the netting. “With the other trees we get a lot

of assistance from native bees, and we have decided that we will need to add additional hives to the netted area, as the trees really should be fruiting more than they are. “If we get this sorted nets are the possible solution, as the fruit has no bird damage, and less defects from wind and hail, so it takes the risk of weather events almost out of the equation. “However, it is also an expensive undertaking and could potentially add a few extra dollars to each kilo. With price point a constant consideration, the Rougets have also invested in lasers to repel the birds. Perceiving the approaching laser beam as a physical danger, the technology has the potential to deter birds and works fairly effectively with the cockatoos in particular. Most effective during sunrise and sunset, and in overcast, rainy or foggy conditions, the birds do not get used to the laser beam’s implied threat. The Rougets have adapted the laser for their purpose, and though they have experienced a few malfunctions, it has proven cheaper to run and they have been able to program it and synchronise it to a timer. “Our strategy is to not rely on one thing, Simon said, when discussing the use of the lasers. “It’s just the more uncomfortable we can make the birds the better. And just as farming changes every year, so do the combination of solutions to problems, and as Simon said “In farming there are always a thousand different ways of having a similar result.

Straw mulcher spreading vineyard benefits TWO new kids on the block are leading change in North East vineyards to reduce the impacts of extreme heat on vines and make vineyards more sustainable. One is a new six metre long machine and the other is a 26 year old vineyard manager. Total Vineyard Management owner Mick Marasco said the Eco Mulcher Spreader is sought after by industryleading vignerons changing how they run their vineyards in order to look after the vines, reduce the amount of water required and develop more sustainably. “Joel Chambers from Lake Moodemere Estate in RutherJOHQ LV QRW WKH o UVW WR VSUHDG straw under vines, but his straw is made from the stubble from the cropping side of their business and with our new machine, they can do it at scale,” Mr Marasco said. “We will use 200 round bales on his vineyard. “The Eco Mulcher is not only a straw spreader, it mulches up large round and large square straw bales and feeds them directly under the vines. “It’s a very versatile machine as it can also spread compost, grape marc, pig manure and fertiliser.” At just 26, Joel Chambers has been full-time on the farm for four years, working to make the 16 hectare vineyard as sustainable as pos-

High-tech map shows fruit, macadamia farms hit by bushfires general assumptions and policy decisions regarding the impact of national disasters such as bushfire, it is industry specific maps that allow the impact and extent of the damage to be calculated,” he said. “This data can also be useful in instances such as claiming insurance and it can help growers if they are unable to get out to assess damage themselves.” The map reveals that avocado, mango, olive, banana, macadamia and citrus orchards have suffered minimal fire damage this season, with the bulk of farms unscathed. Avocados Australia chief executive John Tyas said the Australian Bushfires Rapid Response Map has provided an easy, up-to-date and credible tool to help his industry body keep growers informed and respond as needed. “This mapping has done exactly what it was meant to do: allow for assessment and response to a

natural disaster,” he said. “Like everyone, we’re hoping for some better conditions in the coming weeks and months and our thoughts are with everyone affected.” The web map works in any browser on any smart device and offers three different base maps (imagery, terrain or streets) and has a search function to find an address or place of interest. This response map is a snapshot of work being delivered as part of a broader national avocado, mango, olive, macadamia, banana and citrus crop mapping project. This initiative is supported by Hort Innovation, through funds from the Australian Government’s Department of Agriculture Rural Research and Development for Profit program and coordinated by the University of New England, with bushfire extent from the EMSINA Group and Geoscience Australia.

AMID devastating bushfire activity across Australia, scientists have released a map that shows avocado, mango, olive, banana, macadamia and citrus orchards that have been impacted, to help with response and recovery efforts. Driven by a Hort Innovation investment, in collaboration with various universities, state and federal government agencies, private sector companies and industry, the Australian Bushfires Rapid Response Map outlines the location of targeted tree crop farms across Australia, overlayed with a map of burnt areas, which updates every 10 minutes. Scientist Craig Shephard, from the University of New England’s Applied Agricultural Remote Sensing Centre (AARSC), said the new tool aims to help authorities and industry bodies easily identify any crop damage and loss. “While broad land cover maps are useful for making

SMOKE TAINT: Smoke infiltrates the water even in tanks that are fitted with first flush diverters.

FIRE PREVENTION

February 2020

Taint a bushfire consequence

WITH huge areas of Australia blanketed by smoke from the continuing bushfires, home owners many kilometres from the fires are experiencing, in some part, one of the consequences of the fires - smoke tainted rainwater. While all rainwater tanks on homes should be installed with first flush diverters, even these devices can’t stop the smoke from infiltrating the water already in tanks. Some particulate matter washed into the rainwater tanks can be removed by using cartridge filters. Particulate removal can be achieved by using a two-stage process. First remove the larger particles with a 20 micron pleated filter cartridge. Secondly, follow with a one micron depth cartridge such as a polyspun filter cartridge. While particulate matter in the smoke is part of the problem, the major component affecting the taste and odour is chemical in nature, and thus it is impractical to remove using normal domestic filters. The most practical approach for taste and odour removal from home rainwater

tanks is to pass the water slowly through a carbon cartridge. These cartridges are sometimes mistakenly referred to as filters, but they perform a different function to a filter. They fit into the same housings as the filter cartridges. Carbon cartridges rely on chemical absorption to lock up the dissolved gases and impurities thus removing them from the water. To do this they rely on exposure time to allow the carbon to do its job. “One of the most common errors when using carbon cartridges is consumers trying to allow high flow rates through their carbon cartridge,” says Maris Romans, Davey Water Products’ product manager for water treatment. “The longer the exposure time the better the absorption of the chemicals will be.” A good quality carbon block cartridge to suit a 10” large diameter or “Jumbo” cartridge housing is best suited to supply one tap at a time. A longer 20” large diameter cartridge is sufficient for two outlets at once.

Neither filters nor a carbon cartridge will sanitise the water, so if live organisms or pathogens in the water are a concern other methods of treatment are available. Davey Water Products offer a range of water filtration, sanitisation and purification products ideal for rainwater tanks. These products are available Australia wide via your local Davey reseller. To find your local Davey reseller go to: https://www.daveywater. com/au/find-a-distributor. For water tanks directly affected by fire retardants see the links below from the various state government websites. A single ember can spread bushfires as far as 40km. Burning embers from bushfires can travel up to 40km, starting new fires in seconds, destroying homes and making escape impossible. If the Fire Danger Rating is ever extreme or above, don’t hesitate. Leave early.

BULL & ON FARM SALE

February 2020

Tarcombe Herefords consistently high achievers THIS year marks the 46th annual sale for Tarcombe Herefords. Established in 1967 on 2900 acres in the hills at Ruffy, the stud today is run on 5000 acres by father and son, Robert and Tim Hayes. Robert and Tim have always had a passion for the Hereford breed, running 250 registered cows, and a commercial herd of 150 cows, the commercial line providing them with the knowledge that is essential for breeding better bulls for quality commercial production. Their ultimate goal is to produce young sires that consistently leave high value, highly marketable beef cattle for the commercial producer. A great deal of exploration is used in selecting the sires and semen that is purchased and used in the Tarcombe herd, with the values of Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs), good temperament and sound structure of upmost importance. Replacement heifers are selected on a good balance of EBVs focused on calving ease, low birth weight, higher IMF and higher EMA. Maintaining fast early growth, good fertility traits and structural soundness, and

FAMILY AFFAIR: Sam McLean at Jade Park Angus manages the stud herd when he’s not studying, and is heavily involved in the future genetic direction of the stud. A GREAT REASON TO BUY: Lot 1 in the upcoming annual sale to be held on March 4 on-farm at Tarcombe Herefords. the ability to perform in hard conditions are the priority. Each year in May, Tarcombe take a team of bulls to the National Hereford Show and Sale in Wodonga. Last year was very successful for Tarcombe, proud winners of the Top of the Drop class (Tarcombe Justin P016) and the Senior Champion (Tarcombe Fort N093), with Tarcombe Justin going on to win the Grand Champion of the show. This July a selection of steers will be sent to Lardner Park in Warragul for a grassfed trial. The cattle are weighed almost monthly, until final weighing in December, up against 60 head of various breeds from assorted studs. Last year’s trial saw two of the Tarcombe steers finish 5th and 12th overall in the trial. Both yielded 52 per cent which was among the highest, and they also rated high for EMA and P8 and Rib fat and received a score of one for AUS Marble. In December, for 15 years running now, a small selection

of steers have been sent to schools in Sydney to feed and then enter the carcass competition at the Royal Easter Show in Sydney. There is no hesitation in offering these animals to the students who clearly have a passion for agriculture and enjoy the temperament of Tarcombe’s Hereford cattle. They consistently perform well - very often in the highest point scorers of the Hereford breed. These competitions and trials are a very important part of the breeding program and Tarcombe continue to participate as much as time allows. This time of year, however, the focus is on preparing for the annual sale which will be held on March 4. On offer will be 31 Polled Hereford Bulls, four Horned Bulls and 32 PTIC Heifers. For a catalogue or any enquiries please contact the Facebook page (Tarcombe Herefords and Charolais), email at temagong@bigpond. com or call Tim on 0439 257 693.

passionate expertise to the business. Sam is studying medicine and manages the stud herd when he is not at university. He has fantastic animal handling skills from AI to branding. He also has a keen eye for the Angus style and is a big part of the future genetic direction of Jade Park. Their other son Angus works full time on a large cropping farm at Bungeet, which complements the family farming operation through his extensive skill set in land management. BULL & ON FARM SALE

February 2020

Meat leading strong exports VICTORIAN food and fibre exports reached a new high last financial year – showing that despite difficult seasonal and market conditions, Victoria’s agriculture sector continues to go from strength to strength. Minister for Agriculture Jaclyn Symes toured Yarra Valley Cherries in Gruyere during the company’s busy Christmas picking and packing period to launch the 2018-19 Victorian Food and Fibre Export Report, which shows Victoria’s agriculture sector increased by $98 million on the previous year. “While the impact on our farms from drought is clear, the growth in our meat and horticulture exports is encouraging – showing that the world can’t get enough of Victoria’s quality produce, Ms Symes said. And though ongoing drought and dry conditions took their toll on the total volume of food and fibre exported, the high market value of beef, sheep and dairy products helped the state’s overall result – with food and fibre contributing $14.2 billion to the state’s economy. “This year’s results are a testament to our hard-working, resilient food and fibre producers across the state – despite the challenges, their innovative work is driving our industry to be the best in Australia, Ms Symes added. The meat industry is still the leading sector, with exports increasing in value by 23 per cent to $4.1 billion. The USA remains Victoria’s largest meat export destination at $1.019 billion, while China’s demand for Victorian produce increased by 45 per cent with exports valued at $687 million. Victoria’s horticulture businesses are also growing their global footprint, with exports increasing in value by 38 per cent to $1.6 billion. In particular, almonds had a record-breaking year, reaching over half a billion dollars in export – after Australian almond orchards produced a record crop of approximately 100,000 tonnes. Victoria’s wine is also cementing its worldwide reputation for quality, with exports increasing by 12 per cent to $404 million while the volume of wine exported grew by eight per cent. While 2018-19 was a strong year for the sector, the impact on Victorian farmers affected by drought and dry seasonal conditions is clear. The 2018-19 Victorian Food and Fibre Export Report can be found at agriculture.vic.gov.au/ exports.

More water for farmers in the Broken system

THE State Government is making temporary changes to rules in the Broken River system to provide more water for the critical stock and domestic needs over the next six months. Minister for Water Lisa Neville announced the temporary change, which is NQRZQ DV D TXDOLo FDWLRQ RI water rights, as well as a review into the future management of the water supply in the Broken system. “Some people in the Broken system do not have access to enough water for critical human needs this year, which is why we are helping them out with a temporary TXDOLo FDWLRQ RI ULJKWV WR provide access to water,” Ms Neville said. “Changing the way water is allocated over the next six months will provide a critical lifeline for farmers battling dry conditions and help them get through the season.” The review will also consider the impact of ongoing dry conditions and low inp RZV RYHU D QXPEHU RI \HDUV

In the meantime, the TXDOLo FDWLRQ RI ULJKWV ZLOO provide immediate relief to landowners – with changes to the way water is shared among farmers and the wider system, offering them more water for stock and domestic uses. There is currently enough water to operate the Broken system this year and any water allocations carried over from last season can be delivered, but seasonal allocations for high-reliability water shares in the Broken system are currently zero and are not expected to increase this season unless conditions turn wet. As a result, some entitlement holders in the Broken system do not have sufo FLHQW FDUU\RYHU IURP ODVW season to give them access to critical stock and domestic water. The changes will take effect from January 1, and will remain in place until June

All water use in the system will continue to be accounted for through metering or deeming against the allocation available in entitlement holders’ allocation accounts. 7KH TXDOLo FDWLRQ LV QRW H[ pected to impact on other irrigators or the environment. Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) will work with the Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority to monitor conditions in the system during the qualio FDWLRQ SHULRG The review into management of the Broken system will take place between early-2020 and mid-2021 and include consultation with community, key stakeholders and water users. This process will identify the community’s preferred options - that do not adversely impact on obligations to supply water to the downstream Goulburn and Murray systems or on the environment.

PREMIUM GENETICS: Lot 28 - Allendale Jackaroo P165 (PP) is a high achieving bull with great indexes, and is definitely one to keep an eye on at the upcoming sale.

Allendale to offer all bulls at annual sale ON February 24 Allendale will offer 40 Poll Hereford bulls in conjunction with Day’s Whiteface. This year’s draft features well balanced, mid-maturity bulls with typical Poll Hereford doing ability and temperament. Many of the sale bulls are homozygous polled and have genomically enhanced EBVs. There are at least 10 different sires of this year’s bulls to give clients a variety of bloodlines. For the first time Allendale will offer all bulls at their annual sale. The decision was made to give clients the opportunity to access the best genetics at the one location. A feature of the sale will be

five bulls that have been used within the stud in 2019. These bulls would have normally been offered at the Dubbo or Wodonga National. Sons of Allendale Chisel L3 are an excellent group of mid-maturity bulls with plenty of shape and good skins. Chisel L3 excels for short gestation length, 200 and 400 Day Weight, Scrotal Size, EMA and Fat. This results in L3 having all of his indexes in the top five per cent. Churchill Kickstart 501C (US) has sons with plenty of length. Kickstart is very good for calving ease, birthweight, EMA and all indexes. There are also a number of excellent sons of Allendale Gambler L143 who was sold

at Dubbo for $40,000 in 2018. The Gambler sons impress for their doing ability and carcase. Gambler is in the top one per cent for EMA at +8.2 and top five per cent for IMF. Another bull with an impressive group of sons is Allendale Chisel L8. Chisel L8 sold at Wodonga for $20,000 for Howquadale Station at Mansfield. Chisel L8 is a top son of Remitall West Gameday and is a trait leader in all growth traits and scrotal size. The Allendale Beef Week field day is on Tuesday, February 11 and the stud welcomes your inspection. Please feel free to contact Alastair on 0429 782 711 anytime to arrange an inspection.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE: The Seymour Alternative Farming Expo is on again, scheduled to take place from February 14 – 16.

See more at Seymour expo THE animals are groomed, the entertainers are at the ready and the gates are about to open for the 28th edition of the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. Held in the heart of Victoria at Seymour’s Kings Park from Friday, February 14 to Sunday, February 16, event manager Jamie Gilbert said with more than 400 exhibitors the expo had something for everyone. “Come and explore the latest technology, practises and trends in small and backyard farming, visit the animals and enjoy the market-style shopping, food and entertainment,” Mr Gilbert said. A stalwart of the farming calendar, the expo puts the spotlight

on modern farming methods, agtech solutions and sustainability. “Every year exhibitors showcase the latest technological advancements, machinery and equipment in the agricultural industry for small acreage farming,” Mr Gilbert said. “Over the years the event has grown to incorporate sustainability, including off-the-grid, renewable resources and lowimpact living. “There is also an opportunity to get up close and personal with unique livestock breeds, learn tips on raising unusual paddock pals and get up-todate on animal health and farm diversity ideas in the Small Farms Learning Hub.” Mr Gilbert said the expo was

also a great family fun day out, with plenty of star-studded entertainment for all ages. “This year we’ve added the All 4 FMX quad bike demos to the huge entertainment lineup, while the Flipping Disc Dogs are back fresh from the Australia’s Got Talent stage,” he said. “There’s the ever-popular Kids’ Corner and the Country Kitchen and Butcher Shop where chef Adrian Hensley and butcher Vic Bonacci will cook up a storm.” Mitchell Shire mayor David Lowe said he was excited to see the expo roll into Seymour for another year. “An estimated 22,000 visitors are expected across the three

days, with the expo anticipated to bring in more than $6 million to the local economy,” Cr Lowe said. “This fosters the continued growth and development of our agricultural sector as well as our broader community and region – a very welcome boost during the widespread drought that so many people are experiencing. “Congratulations to the hardworking volunteers, staff and community members who have made this expo a success for nearly three decades.” For further information or to buy tickets online and save 15 per cent off the gate price, visit www.seymourexpo.com.au. Rain after a dry period is when we commonly see cases of stringhalt in horses. Stringhalt is when horses show a prolonged, exaggerated hindlimb flexion (a characteristic gait where the hind leg jerks sharply upwards) during forward or backward movement. We don’t completely understand the cause of stringhalt, but it is thought to be due to a plant-derived neurotoxin, and is associated with poor quality, drought affected pastures and the presence of Hypochoeris radicata (known as Flatweed, False Dandelion or Catsear). It will commonly affect multiple animals in the same paddock at the same time. It happens more often in mature

Stringhalt horses, particularly those that are taller. A stringhalt type gait affecting only a single hindlimb can also occur following injury to the hock region. Most cases of stringhalt recover spontaneously once they are removed from the causative pasture. However, some horses with stringhalt have a prolonged recovery, some taking several years, and the occasional one never recovers completely. Horses with prolonged symptoms are suspected to be cases where the toxic insult has been prolonged, causing sometimes permanent changes to the nerves and muscles of the hindlimbs.

There are a number of treatments which have been attempted in horses with stringhalt, including various medications, supplements, and even surgery. However, the effectiveness of these treatments is unknown since controlled trials have never been performed, and the spontaneous recovery of the majority of cases makes any response to treatment difficult to interpret. The most important treatment of a horse with stringhalt is to remove it from the inciting pasture immediately, and feed hay instead. The sooner this can be done, the more likely and swift recovery is likely to be.
