Be prepared Farmers urged to strengthen drought response Ű

PREPARE. That’s the lesson to be taken from the current season, according to farmers in the Shepparton region. All eyes are turned upwards, anxiously waiting for an autumn break to eventuate. But if rain does not fall, it will be business as usual for Ian Hamono at his Tatura property. Ian, who runs an irrigated cropping property at Cooma, managed to carry over enough of his water entitlements to see him through the last few months. In fact, the dry summer currently devastating local dairy farmers has been tolerated with relative ease by Mr Hamono. “I need rain in the next few weeks for my summer crops to dry down,” he said. “I’d like a good autumn break to get the next round of crops ready, but it is what it is.” Mr Hamono has already been allocated 100 per cent of his Goulburn water rights, and said he purchased just 200 meg – paying $390/meg – several months ago. “I could sense that this was going to be a tough year, so I’ve carried as much over as I could,” he said. Mr Hamono’s crop program has been so successful, last year he won the irrigated section of the National Maize Competition, using just six megalitres per hectare of water for a 19.54 tonne yield. Later this month, he will begin again

– sowing down canola, followed by wheat, oats and vetch. “You have to prepare,” Mr Hamono said. “Do what you can, because not every season is going to be good.” Simon Wall farms halfway between Shepparton and Benalla at Gowangardie, where his family runs a mixed sheep, beef and cereal operation. Like Mr Hamono, Mr Wall believes in celebrating a good season, but being prepared for the bad. Sitting snug under a foot of Wall farm soil are 1200 wet tonnes of silage – buried in 2004 for a drought year. “We put that aside for when it’s bad,” Mr Wall said. “We call it ‘the oh s$%t’ pile – and we haven’t opened it yet.” Valued at around $15,000 when it was buried, the feed is worth more than double that now – and it’s peace of mind. “It’s not about the money value,” he said. “It’s being prepared, and knowing you have it sitting there.” Mr Wall comes from a long line of farmers who believed in fortifying supplies. In the 1982 drought, his father cleared out and deepened 32 dams. In the 2000 drought, they did the same again. “You’re kidding yourself if you don’t think you’ll face a bad year,” Mr Wall said.

THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES: John and Joan Woodruff held their final Witherswood Angus sale last month, signalling the end of their 30 year association with the beef industry. Read the full sale wrap story on page 2 of this month’s Farmer.

Mr Sergeant was repeating the phrase that farmers across the region are all too familiar with - because if there is one thing that’s needed right now, it’s rain. Most producers have already trimmed excess stock - sold empty and old cows and neatened herds - but the majority are still left with enormous feed bills, regardless of their breeding plan. “Spring calves are feeding their weaned calves, autumn calves are feeding their lactating cows with calves at foot,” Mr Sergeant said. “Any surplus stock have been sold – basically, anything we do not need we are getting rid of. “We are struggling to keep

HELP THOSE WHO NEED IT: Local farmer Chris Hunter wants to get a pool of water together that can be sold to local dairy producers for less than the going rate.

Watching fellow dairy farmers struggle to make ends meet, Chris wants investors in the water trade – and those who have spare allocations – to offer the rights to those who truly need it. More importantly, he wants it to be offered at a sustainable price. “Farmers who need water are being held to ransom – they are forced to either buy water or sell cows; it’s killing our district, Chris said. “I can remember buying water at $200/meg, and that hurt. “At $200 It’s unsustainable – at $500 (current prices) it’s ridiculous. “Why can’t we have a good heart and sell it for $200 again, and that is still making money? For the last few weeks, Chris has

Angus breeders invited to do survey

AUSTRALIAN Angus breeders are being invited to provide input into the breeding direction of the Angus breed by completing an online survey. The survey aims to determine current industry preferences for different traits within Angus breeding programs. Angus Australia’s breed development and extension manager, Andrew Byrne, explained the survey was a critical part of a project being conducted to review the selection indexes that are calculated within the Angus BREEDPLAN genetic evaluation. “Survey outcomes will help

to shape the future selection indexes that are calculated for Australian Angus animals, said Mr Byrne. Facilitated by CSIRO Agriculture and Food, in collaboration with Angus Australia, the online survey aims to determine industry preferences for not only traditional production traits, like calving ease, fertility, growth rate and carcase quality, but also traits that are not currently considered in the selection indexes, such as structural soundness and temperament, and newer, more novel traits like immune competence, and the acceptable

trade-offs between these groups of traits. 5HVHDUFK SURMHFW RIo FHU DW CSIRO, Amy Bell, said that traditionally the focus of the breeding program had been on production and reproduction traits, however, other traits were starting to be considered to maintain a healthy, sustainable and productive herd. One example of this is immune competence, which has only recently been developed as a measurable trait. Immune competence describes an animal’s ability to mount an immune response to

CELEBRATE THE GOOD, PREPARE FOR THE BAD: Ian Hamono, a Tatura farmer, said it was important to prepare for a tough season – especially when the weather is good.

WINNING HEREFORDS: (From left) Herefords Australia chairman Bill Kee, with Reece Newcomen from Ensay who won the best presented sash for his Hereford pen at the Ensay Mountain Calf sales. Mountain sales done for another year LAST month, The Victorian Mountain Calf Sales were held over two days across the high plains. Overall, condition was lighter than last year’s sale – and prices were down up to $200 per head as a result. Despite that, vendors were

still pleased with some results. Hereford lines enjoyed a strong day out, with the Ensay sale seeing steers top at $1220 and heifers at $1070 – but both averaged out at considerably less. Reece and Wendy Newcomen offered 118 autumn

drop steers and 32 heifers at the Ensay sale, with their top pen of heifers making $1030, which was over $100 more than last year. They also took home the sash for best presented pen. “Normally the heifers are a couple of hundred dollars

behind the steers and this year they were a couple of hundred dollars in front,” Mr Newcomen said. “I was hoping for a little bit more (with the steers), sort of closer to the $1000 mark but that’s the environment and market we’re in at the moment.”

Farmers urged to strengthen drought response Ŷ

Frompage 1 This year, Mr Wall cut his canola for hay. His wheat crop yielded half what it did previously, and calves were sold a month earlier than usual. Likewise, sheep numbers have tightened – with only the best stock left for breeding. “We aren’t staring down a barrel though,” Mr Wall said. “You do what you have to.” Mr Wall is, in fact, already looking to prepare for the next big dry. Using an infrastructure grant, he has purchased two grain silos – with the intention of filling them to store for a not-so rainy day. His pro-active approach is an example of how the

government’s current On-Farm Drought Infrastructure Support programs can be utilised. Through it, up to $5000 is available to help farms prepare for dry conditions in Northern and North West Victoria – from purchasing grain silos to creating stock containment areas. “We’re proud to be supporting farmers through tough seasonal conditions, making sure farms are better equipped to prepare for drought,” Minister for Agriculture, Jaclyn Symes, said when announcing the package. Since our humble beginnings in 1924 we have dedicated our business to making quality clothing and footwear that’s ideally suited to the Australian lifestyle. My late grandfather’s life’s work was to put quality and integrity into everything he made. That aim lives with us today. Inspired by this image from ‘The Man from Snowy River 2’ movie that featured our products, our horseman logo seemed to say it all. Heritage, quality, country style. So there’s a promise behind our logo – that our heritage can add quality and style to your life.

NEWS IN BRIEF z Wangaratta farmer’s market gets cash THE Wangaratta farming community will benefit from a $20,000 cash injection. The money will be used to help the Open Food Network work with local community partners in running a new fresh market event, although exact details on what that entails are yet to be released. Planning for the event with stakeholders will commence in the second half of this year, and the event itself will be held in the first half of 2020. z Pear downgrade A HOT, dry summer with extreme heat patterns has caused a re-think of the apple and pear season, with calls for the crop estimate to be downgraded just weeks after it was released. The initial estimate predicted an overall rise of eight per cent, but with the Goulburn Valley recording its hottest ever January, it is thought the crop will be 20 per cent below average. z Benalla abattoir targeted again THE Benalla Abattoir has been targeted after activists broke into the facility three times last month, hiding a camera in machinery. It is not yet confirmed if the activists are targeting the abattoir after the release of the Aussie Farms map. z Anthrax confirmed A PROPERTY near Swan Hill has confirmed a case of anthrax in sheep. The disease has been found on a property that has a history of anthrax – at risk stock on the property has been vaccinated. Agriculture Victoria is involved. z Cattle prices slide THE benchmark Eastern Young Cattle Indicator has dropped below 400 cents a kilo for the first time in four years. The EYCI has been retreating since drought conditions really took hold, most notably since the start of the year. Current as at Mid-March.

He believes the modernisation of the infrastructure - occurring through the Connections Project gives northern Victoria a competitive edge.

“The knowledge that the channel system will deliver water efficiently for irrigators to grow fruit or veggies or crops makes us one of the luckiest areas in Australia, David said. “I don’t know any other region with a system quite like ours - keeping water in the district is hugely important now and will be massively important going forward. The $2 billion Connections Project is the largest irrigation modernisation project in the country. The Vigliaturo property sits on Central Goulburn number four channel, which was remediated and upgraded during the Connections Project 2018 Winter Works. At this site, 2km of channel was lined with a Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL), generating water savings of about 505ML annually.

Andrew Vogels, who farms at Scotts Creek, said his shelter was the best investment he had made in years. Andrew and his wife Zoe, along with Andrew’s brother Jamie and his wife Sheryn, run Scotts Creek Dairies in southern Victoria. They milk 630 Friesiancross cows off their 365-hectare farm, with a further 242-hectare out paddock for

young stock, silage and hay. The farm is in a high rainfall area, leaving many paddocks inaccessible and damaged each winter. “We’ve always had problems with heavy soils and pugging, and trying to manage cows on the farm during July and August, Mr Vogels said. “We needed a place to put cows where they could be fed and be comfortable. So, the family decided to erect a 3200sqm shelter, which has proven a success since the o UVW FRZV HQWHUHG IRU FDOYLQJ last May, easing pressure on the paddocks over winter and allowing strong spring growth.

“We calved close to 500 cows in May-June and then another mob in September and the shelter made life so much easier, Mr Vogels said. “It’s right beside the dairy, the cows are undercover and the calves are being born in a nice, dry environment. “Rather than trashing paddocks with springers, a month before they were due to calve, we put them in the shelter to start their lead-feed process and then we moved them into the other half for calving. “It saved a large part of the farm. Mr Vogels said another bo-

Ellinbank Research Centre profile BY DR MARTIN AULDIST

Senior Research Scientist, Agriculture Victoria, Ellinbank technique, and quantifying feeding behaviour using on-cow sensors. This information is used to determine the variation in feed intake between cows to see if we can reduce that variation. Currently, I’m working on a project that is investigating new technologies for measuring and allocating pasture, with the aim of enabling farm managers to gain access to real-time data

capture of pasture intake. I’m also working on a project investigating the effect of feeding different supplements to grazing cows during the first 100 days of their lactation to see if this affects milk yield over the rest of their lactation. Best thing(s) about being a scientist: Continuously learning new areas of research and working with cows. I love my job because every day is different and I get to work with great people. Worst thing(s) about being a scientist: Starting at strange hours during experiments. Previous job (if any): Tutor/

demonstrator at The University of Melbourne in two subjects: Applied Animal Physiology (2nd year) and Topics in Animal Health (3rd year). I started at Agriculture Victoria as a technical officer. Career highlight so far: Travelling to Ireland to conduct research as part of my PhD and completing a PhD.

BACKBONE: Marlie Wright has been a researcher at Ellinbank for six years, and is currently working on a project that looks at the variations in cow feed intake.

IN the 1980s, Graham Maddock was like every other farmer – he worked hard on the family farm, did what he could to grow more pasture, and went to bed each night happy. Like his father before, Graham used fertilisers in autumn and insecticides when it was needed. But 30 years ago something happened that would send Graham on a completely different path; he was doused in chemical. “A tractor spray unit, carrying a potent insecticide, burst a vital high pressure line and I was almost completely soaked,” Graham said. During the months of illness, Graham had time to think about just how lucky he had been to escape permanent injury – but more importantly, if the insecti-

cide made him sick, what was it doing to his beef and dairy herds? “As odd as it sounds, it had just never occurred to me before then – that everything I sprayed and supered was ingested by our cattle; cattle that gave us milk and beef,” Graham said. “I had heard of the benefits of using worm castings – vermicast - as a natural fertiliser, and decided to trial it on an experimental crop of Chinese Water Chestnuts. “I haven’t looked back.” Graham’s Chestnuts flourished, and he was so inspired he trialled test strips of vermicast spread over the rest of his property. “I continued to spread 250kg/ ha of castings over the property annually, and the results got

better each year,” he said. The limitation of vermicast was cost of transport. In the mid-90s Graham decided to invest the farm’s fertiliser deposit on setting up his own Vermiculture system. The next step was to set up the windrows to take the liquid extract from the worms and so NutriSoil LS (liquid spray) biological concentrate was born. “It is a fertiliser in its own right and has been the only form of fertiliser used on our property for many years now,” Graham said. “Rather than 250kg/ha application with vermicast, only 5L/ha of NutriSoil concentrate is required.” In 2016, NutriSoil won the Australian Organics Best Certified Product of the Year (non food).

Seeds, Fertilisers and Pasture Good farming with biologicals and Healthy Earth fertilisers By BAYLEY GOODE, GOODE ORGANICS MICROBES can be found in every type of environment, and play a crucial role in ecosystems because they act as decomposers. From an agricultural perspective, the shift into this space is rapidly growing as farmers seek to better understand their land. One of the best-known examples of microbes working with enzymes and plant nutrition is within a plant’s rhizophere. As research continues, we better understand that soil microbiology is an ecosystem that feeds plants and helps to protect them from pest and disease as well as recover from environmental stress. Microbes also help to create new biomass when breaking down organic matter - their output varies greatly dependent on their health and numbers present in soil structure. Healthy Earth’s approach to fertiliser has always had soil nutrition (plant food) at its core to achieve pasture and crop health. German agricultural chemist, Justun von Liebig (1803

It is trace elements that are a key component to Healthy

JOHN Shearer has brought together all of their experience as a leading seed drill manufacturer to create a new drill purpose built for renovating pastures. Sowing widths range from 2.0m to 3.3m in sowing spacings of 127mm and 152mm, the innovative drill does away with traditional chains and sprockets in favour of a new electronic drive system. With the new technology, maintenance needs are notably reduced and calibration of seed and fertiliser rates is much easier than ever before. During rate calibration, the control tablet can be removed from the tractor and operated from any position within wireless range of the drill, making one-man calibration a breeze. New Grassland Society branch forms in Euroa A NEW Mid-Goulburn branch of the Grassland Society of Southern Australia will host its first event at Euroa on April 12, giving local landholders an insight into use of fertilisers and lime. The branch has been revived after a recess of several years, and will host the Pasture Update at the Euroa Memorial Oval on Friday, April 12 from 9.30am12.20pm - followed by lunch. The Pasture Update will focus on the facts and fiction of fertiliser and limes, and is part of a series run by the Grassland Society on be-

half of MLA Australia. New president, Ron Harris, encouraged local landholders, farmers and agribusiness consultants to join the branch. “If you’re a member, you can help to determine what events we run to make sure they are relevant to local producers, Mr Harris said. Grassland Society members also receive a discount to attend events, can attend the annual conference and receive regular updates and newsletters. The April 12 Pasture Update will feature agricultural consultant Lisa Warn speak-

ing on assessing soils and plants to identify what they do and don’t need; Cameron Gourley from Agriculture Victoria on national standards to deliver better fertiliser advice; Jim Shovelton from Meridian Ag will provide a lowdown on lime; and Cam Nicholson from Nicon Rural Services will outline the impact of alternative fertilisers and products. There will also be an update on the MLA’s latest research. Mr Harris said fertiliser,

lime and other inputs were a significant cost to most properties. “The cheapest form of feed is home-grown feed so we’re trying to help farmers to optimise the amount of feed they grow by looking at a range of fertilisers and how they can be best used, he said. Details of local trials will be available during the Pasture Update. “It will provide good scientific information which will help farmers to decide

what they should do, Mr Harris said. “Our speakers are not only experts in their field, three of them are also farmers - so they can talk about what they’ve put into practice. “The Pasture Update will help people to make better decisions about where to invest to optimise soil health, pasture and animal production. Grassland Society president and Mansfield farmer, Matt Mahoney, welcomed the new branch. “It’s great to have a reinvigorated branch in the re-

gion with a very passionate committee which will drive the Grassland banner in the area, Mr Mahoney said. Lisa Warn is the new branch vice-president, Emilie Lyons secretary and Dr Paul Long has joined the committee. The Pasture Update will cost $20 for GSSA and MLA members; $50 for nonmembers and includes morning tea and lunch. People can RSVP by Wednesday, April 10 to GSSA secretary Melinda Caspersz on 1300 137 550, or by email at office@grasslands.org.au.

BIG SPENDERS: A total of $55 million will be spent creating a new state of the art packing house in Shepparton, with the money forming a co-investment between the Federal Government and Geoffrey Thompson Fruit Packing.

$15 million to be spent at GV packing house

A $15 MILLION investment in a Shepparton packing house will bring more than 1300 new jobs to the region. Deputy Prime Minister, Michael McCormack, visited Shepparton last month to make the announcement – which will see a $15 million federal investment put towards a new high-tech fruit sorting and packing facility. The money forms part of a co-investment with Geoffrey Thompson Fruit Packing, with the overall project to cost $55 million – and create some 1350 new jobs in the area over the next five years. Regional Development Australia (RDA) Hume chair, Susan Benedyka, said the new facility would decrease

post-harvest costs, eliminate waste and allow local fruit producers to be competitive on a global stage. “Horticulture accounts for over 30 per cent of gross regional product, and this new high-tech factory is a major show of faith in the Goulburn Valley fruit industry, Ms Benedyka said. “This investment will contribute major economic benefits to help the region to continue to grow and prosper. “I would like to congratulate and acknowledge the work of the federal member for Murray, Damian Drum, in advocating so strongly for this project. “These efforts include meeting with the government and talking about the

importance of keeping the Goulburn Valley fruit production globally competitive by reducing waste of fruit, therefore increasing the returns for growers. “The benefits of this announcement are very significant because we know that the jobs both during construction and once the packing plant is built will be a strong stimulus for the Hume region. “In a time when drought is affecting so much of Australia, this is an extremely welcome announcement. Fruit Co is rumoured to be in the front-running to buy SPC Ardmona, which owner Coca-Cola Amatil put up for sale last year.

With deck sizes from 36 all the way up to 72 in a range of different models - from the CRZ residential mower to the full-blown commercial Predator Pro - if you’re serious about mowing, Bob-Cat have a model for you. From the heavy duty tubular frame, to the extra strong cutting deck, serviceable hydrostatic drives, quality Ka-

wasaki engines to the comfortable operators seat, it’s hard to go past the Bob-Cat mower when looking at value for dollars. Boasting an industry leading warranty - from 5 years, 500 hours on the entry level units and 6 years, 2750 hours - on the big cats, there is no reason not to buy a Bob-Cat. Rosstulla open day was a success

LUCKY WIN: Rosstulla Poll Hereford stud hosted a farm open day, including trade stalls from a number of local businesses, last month. Pictured (from left) is Rosstulla stud principal, Rex Forrest, with Trevor Ralston from Euroa, who won the lucky door prize on the day, David Jessup, manager Everton Fuel and Farm, and Narelle Forrest.

ROSSTULLA Poll Hereford Stud in Beechworth successfully hosted their annual open day last month, with around 30 people turning up for the event. “This year we decided to hold our own open day instead of joining in the Victorian Beef Week open days in late January,” one of the stud principals, Rex Forrest, said. “When we participate in Beef Week, we are tied to the rules set by the Beef Week Committee and can only host their sponsors - as an independent day this year, we were lucky enough to be able to host Clipex, Everton Fuel and Farm and

Aussie Kubota powered Drought Busters AUSSIE Pumps and their Victorian based Gold distributors are supporting farmers to manage their water resources with an affordable range of Kubota diesel powered pumps. Called “Aussie Drought Busters, the range of 3 and 4 gushers move large volumes fast with minimal cost. “It’s great news that the Federal Government’s water rebate scheme for drought affected farmers has been extended to Victorian farmers in Gippsland, Aussie Pumps product manager, Brad Farrugia, said. “Eligible farmers now have access to grants up to $25,000 to upgrade water infrastructure. “This means they can upgrade to more economical, diesel powered pumps to move stock water and build drought resilience. The Aussie Drought Buster pumps are powered by Kubota’s 9.5hp OC95 electric start air and oil cooled diesel engines. The oil and air cooled design means that the engine runs cooler than conventional air cooled engines, is quieter and provides an excellent fuel economy. Both the 3 and 4 pumps use the same Kubota engine, match tested and approved by the manufacturer. Built around the popular Aussie “Quik Prime design principles, the Aussie Drought Busters offer fast self-priming, with vertical lifts from creeks,

rivers and dams of up to 8.4 metres. They feature big, open high SG cast iron impellers that are able to pass small solids in suspension. They are all carefully match tested to Kubota’s stringent requirement. That ensures the engines are not overloaded but rather are able to work well within their capacity.

“Kubota diesels run as smooth as silk, even under load, Farrugia said. “The advanced cooling three vortex system that combines oil cooled combustion chamber and air cooled cylinder really works. Further information including a free informative guide to selection of the right Aussie QP Kubota powered pump is available from Australian Pumps’ website, www.aussiepumps.com.au.

During droughts, and in the period after a drought breaks, are when we commonly see cases of stringhalt in horses. Stringhalt is when horses show a prolonged, exaggerated hindlimb flexion (a characteristic gait where the hind leg jerks sharply upwards) during forward or backward movement. We don’t completely understand the cause of stringhalt, but it is thought to be due to a plant-derived neurotoxin, and is associated with poor quality, drought affected pastures and the presence of Hypochoeris radicata (known as Flatweed, False Dandelion or Catsear). It will commonly affect multiple animals

in the same paddock at the same time. It happens more often in mature horses, particularly those that are taller. A stringhalt type gait affecting only a single hindlimb can also occur following injury to the hock region. Most cases of stringhalt recover spontaneously once they are removed from the causative pasture. However, some horses with stringhalt have a prolonged recovery, some taking several years, and the occasional one never recovers completely. Horses with prolonged symptoms are suspected to be cases where the toxic insult has been prolonged, causing sometimes permanent changes to the

nerves and muscles of the hindlimbs. There are a number of treatments which have been attempted in horses with stringhalt, including various medications, supplements, and even surgery. However, the effectiveness of these treatments is unknown since controlled trials have never been performed, and the spontaneous recovery of the majority of cases makes any response to treatment difficult to interpret. The most important treatment of a horse with stringhalt is to remove it from the inciting pasture immediately, and feed hay instead. The sooner this can be done, the more likely and swift recovery is likely to be. t/12d12235-v65/1419
