Japan set to enjoy good Aussie drop Wine tariff cut set to increase export trade

LOVING THE LAMB: Elizabeth Sutton joined a record number of visitors and exhibitors at the 2014 Australian Sheep & Wool Show, showcasing the best of Australia’s world-class wool, prime lamb and fibre fashion industries. See page 7 for full story.

OPPORTUNITIES have opened up for local wineries in North East Victoria to enter into the lucrative Japanese wine market after a partnership agreement was signed between Australia and Japan. The Japan Australia Economic Partnership Agreement (JAEPA) has now been signed by the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Australia’s Prime Minister Tony Abbott. The wine market is only just developing in Japan and with the phase out of tariffs for Australian wine over the next seven years it is expected that the Japanese will soon be able to get more of a taste of what Australia has to offer.

BY JODIE FLEMING

jfleming@ nenews.com.au

The agreement is expected to reopen doors by providing valuable preferential access for Australia’s exports with the elimination of the 15 per cent import tariff which now includes bottled, sparkling and bulk wine. Winemakers’ Federation of Australia Strategy & International Affairs general manager Tony Battaglene said the agreement is about developing export opportunities and giving wine a “step up” in the evolving Japanese market.

“Currently our sixth largest market by value and volume, wine consumption there is growing rapidly as the younger generation moves away from traditional products to wines. “We are expecting to see strong growth in sparkling and still grape wines, with targeted sales of middle-to-premium Australian wine brands. “Just look at our major competitors such as Chile, which enjoyed significant increases in market share in Japan after completion of its Free Trade Agreement in 2007. “Australia now has the opportunity to follow suit,” Mr Battaglene said. National approach to ag education needed A NEW national approach to agricultural education is needed if Australia is going to be able to meet the expected agricultural production needs by 2020 according to a report released by the peak industry body for agricultural and natural resource management professionals. According to a report released by the Ag Institute Australia (AIA), Victorian agriculture has been challenged to double agricultural production by 2020 thanks to the Asian population explosion, but this will not occur without the best possible agricultural education. Currently in Victoria, a student can study agriculture at the University of Melbourne,

La Trobe University, Northern Metropolitan Institute of TAFE and Box Hill TAFE. Instead of “spreading resources thinly over all universities” the AIA believes the resources should be concentrated to achieve critical mass in each of the institutions. “Think how much stronger the offering of agricultural education would be if a virtual faculty was created where by the resources of both universities can be combined to avoid duplication and wastage. “Surely this would create a stronger faculty,” the report states. The AIA, together with other interested parties who support the call for consultation between

the University of Melbourne and the wider agricultural community including the Victorian Farmers Federation, Agribusiness Association, Grasslands Society of Victoria and Southern Farming Systems, aims to ensure thatAustralian agriculture has an adequate supply of bright young people who are suitably equipped as agriculturalists or agricultural science researchers. The report noted that universities, including Melbourne, “will need to ensure that good fundamental science and a sound knowledge of the multiand inter-disciplinary activity known as agriculture underpin curricula”. “This is particularly needed in the narrower, specialist dis-

ciplinary areas such as meat science, soil science and animal production and medicine,” the report stated. “Employers observe that students graduating from the University of Melbourne (and many others) Department of Agriculture can do so without appearing sufficiently trained in agriculture nor the science of it. “Inevitably, in the modern educational environment, characterised by shrinking pools of talent – both of potential students and existing staff – universities will need to combine their specialisations and strengths and co-operate in hitherto unprecedented ways to provide high quality training for agricultural-

ists and agricultural researchers in the future.” The report also stated that there is a shortage of graduates that are equipped to enter the areas of international trade negotiation, domestic policy development and project management. Meanwhile, Independent member for Indi Cathy McGowan recently called on the Federal Government to meet with the Australian Council of Deans of Agriculture to discuss the proposed budget changes and the impacts on tertiary agricultural studies. Ms McGowan said the proposed changes will have a detrimental effect on a $30 billion industry if it was not supported with world-leading science.

“Not only will increasing fees make it less attractive for students to choose agriculture, but it will make our agricultural courses less competitive, internationally. “It’s already hard enough to attract post-graduate researchers because of the cost and the 100 per cent proposed increase in fees for post graduates will become an even greater disincentive,” McGowan said. The Australian Council of Deans of Agriculture has just appointed its new president – Holger Meinke from the University of Tasmania. Professor Meinke said he would continue to help the industry towards sustainability through the provision of a world class education system.

Carbon Bus set to tour again in September THE Young Carbon Farmer ‘Carbon Bus Tour’, organised by the Future Farmers Network, is set to hit the road again in September. According to the Future Farmers Network, with Australia’s climate becoming increasingly variable, it is vital for young farmers who will be making major decisions in the future to take into account the impacts of climate change and variability, and how they are going to need to respond. The Young Carbon Farmer ‘Carbon Bus Tour’ offers a unique opportunity for Australia’s best and brightest young farmers to learn from leaders in climate science and carbon farming. Ten innovative young

farmers have been chosen to join the ‘Carbon Bus’ on its final three-day tour of research sites and innovative farms in Victoria. Bee council warns crop chemicals could harm CHEMICALS used to control aphids in canola crops could potentially damage the bee industry. Attempts to control green peach aphid, which is believed to be causing the spread of the beet western yellows virus (BSYV) in canola crops in Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales could potentially have a devastating impact on the Australian bee and pollination industry according to the Australian Honey Bee Industry Council (AHBIC). While the council said it understands the need to control the pest in canola crops it is concerned to hear reports that some products being used to combat the aphid contain the active imidacloprid – a systemic neonicotinoid chemical. AHBIC chairman Ian Zadow said that while the council is told these products control the aphid and are safe for the crop, they will devastate any bees and beehives foraging on that canola. “In addition, some of these products are not registered for foliar application in canola according to the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority. “Foliar-spraying these products on canola are extremely hazardous to any foraging insect, even if sprayed well before flowering – bees located up to seven kilometres

BEE WARNED: Aphids and Varroa mite continue to threaten the bee industry.

from a treated paddock could still be at risk. “The immediate concern is the effect on other pollination-reliant crops,” Mr Zadow said. “Alarmingly we’ve heard reports that this practice has occurred within flight range of almond properties where beehives are expected to arrive within days.” The AHBIC is calling for growers and agronomists that have used these products to ensure that any beehive owners within a seven kilometre radius have been notified. The council also is urging neighboring landholders who currently have, or will soon have beehives on their properties to have open lines of communication. “Unfortunately this practice has the potential to decimate hives that

visit treated crops, causing acute financial losses to both the apiary and pollination-reliant industries,” Mr Zadow said. “WhileAHBIC is not advocating a no-treatment policy of the aphids, it is aware of products available containing the active ingredient sulfoxaflor that are registered for this specific use. “Whilst sulfoxaflor is part of the neonicotinoid family, it is a newly registered compound and much softer on non-target insects once it dries. “The most important thing here is for open lines of communication about the impact certain chemicals can have on our industry,” he said. Meanwhile, according to a recent survey conducted by TQAAustralia on behalf of the Federal Government’s Pollination Program, the majority of blueberry, apple and cherry growers believe the quality and quantity of their crops will be significantly affected if the honey bees they rely on for pollination are struck down by the Varroa mite. WithAustralia currently the only continent free of the Varroa mite, growers were asked about their pollination practices as part of efforts to prepare for the likely arrival of the devastating pest. TQA Australia’s Mark Leech said growers are extremely reliant

on feral honey bee populations and take advantage of them by using the minimum number of managed honey bee colonies when feral bee populations are known to exist. “Experience from overseas shows us that the arrival of Varroa will practically wipe out feral honey bees and have a major impact on managed hives. “This means free pollination services will practically disappear. “Australian’s bee population has no natural resistance to Varroa destructor and unless we remain vigilant in the fight against pest incursions we will have a serious problem on our hands,” Mr Leech said. He said that growers need to develop relationships now with beekeepers to help put them “at the top of the list” for the limited services likely to be available. The survey showed that more than half of growers surveyed believed that the quantity of their crop would be significantly affected and more than 70 per cent believed the quality would be seriously compromised if there was a shortage of honey bees. The Pollination Program will use the results to continue its preparation for the management of Varroa if the mite becomes established in Australia.

Funding delivered for vital health service for farmers FARMERS and farming groups have welcomed the $625,000 Federal and State Government funding for the National Centre for Farmer Health (NCFH) in Hamilton. The State Government has delivered $250,000 to the centre, with the Federal Government contributing $375,090. State minister for health David Davis said the funding is a “welcome step and the centre will develop a sustainable funding solution for the long term. “Farmers are at risk of poor

health, with above average rates of premature morbidity and mortality through heart disease, cancer and suicide. “By working directly with farmers, providing education and training, the centre is actively reducing the incidence of chronic diseases among farmers across rural Victoria and interstate,â€? Mr Davis said. The Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) have been ďŹ ghting hard for State and Federal Governments to deliver $500,000 each to the

NCFH which provides national leadership to improve the health, safety and mental well-being of farm men and women, farm workers, their families and communities across Australia. The centre needs annual funding of $1 million per year to keep operating. VFF president Peter Tuohey said that looking after the physical and mental wellbeing of farming communities should always be “a high priority for government. “It’s important to note this is

only one-off funding. “We need both State and Federal governments to realise the longevity of the NCFH and to ensure that it is a service farming families can rely on in the future. “There’s proven support from both sides of government, both State and Federal and even abroad to continue the work of farmer health. “For a centre and program that is now being adopted and replicated in Canada to simply be abandoned after a year would be bafing,â€? Mr Tuohey said.

Barley takes a hit as the rain continues to fall MURRAY GILBY, with wife Denise and son Colin, farm a 700 hectare cropping property at Kotupna, 30 kilometres east of Echuca. The farming enterprise includes cropping canola, barley and wheat, along with an agricultural contracting business, supplying customers with all their cropping needs.

We are about to apply another 50 litres per hectare of UAN onto the canola and a low rate on wheat crops. The barley that we were able to sow before it became too wet. Generally the wheat crops are looking very good, but the barley has taken a hit. We had sown 200 hectares, but the extreme wet has left us

with about 30 per cent that is worth persevering with. The canola struggled through the wet, but it is beginning to move along a bit now that things have dried out a little. We are attending a two-day event in Wodonga at the end of July which will cover soil health and nutrition. This event will be covered

by two excellent presenters on these subjects and it is always interesting to listen. As farmers we are always on the lookout for updates in technology and any cost saving associated with it. Our transport side of things has slowed down since the closure of Select Agrifeeds in Moama. The new owners have shifted all the plant and equipment from Moama to Ballarat. This has effectively slowed us down to some grain and canola meal deliveries. I always think that when one door closes another will open, so we are on the lookout for the next door.

THERE is still a reluctance to declare the season “too wet! We haven’t had such good moisture since the early 1980s, so we don’t want to chase it away. Fortunately we have only recorded 35 millimetres in the month between mid-June and July and it did dry out enough for us to sow 120 hectares of barley on lighter ground at Barmah East, but here on the home place our paddocks are still so wet that it is impossible to drive even a ute on them. We have managed to spray some wheat to control wild oats and rye grass and the canola was sprayed for weed control and top dressed with urea at 50 kilograms per hectare.

He added that the agreement builds on the positives from the Australia-Korea Free Trade Agreement and the industry looks forward to ongoing discussions to open up further trade possibilities in the future including China. One of Australia’s leading family-owned wine companies, Brown Brothers has been exporting to Japan for close to 30 years and was one of the first Australian companies to do so. Brown Brothers chief executive officer Roland Wahlquist said that the lift in tariffs will help Australian wineries increase the percentage of wine they export to Japan – a country that has mainly consumed traditional styles of red wine. “It has been slow going setting up a partnership because Japan does not have a wine culture. “We are still quite a small player in Japan with only about four per cent of wine sold in Japan is from Australia. “Chile which has had a free trade agreement with Japan for quite a while has about 14 per cent of the market, so we are hoping, in time, Australia will see a lot

more selling of wine not only into Japan, but other Asian countries,” Mr Wahlquist said. Brown Brothers is quite well known in many of the Asian countries, with 15 per cent of its market share exported to Singapore, China, Korea, Taiwan and Malaysia. All Saints Estate chief executive Eliza Brown said that although All Saints is yet to find a suitable distributor in Japan, it is a very exciting opportunity for those in the wine industry interested in creating partnerships within the Japanese market. “The agreement will help the whole of the wine industry by opening up new export markets. “The biggest hurdle is to find appropriate partners and products that are suitable to go into that market. “Japan is quite a sophisticated market for wine,” Ms Brown said. “They really understand flavors and tastes, so you really have to find a partner that is appropriate for your product. “You really need to find someone with common ground, but Japan is definitely on our hit list,” she said.

All Saints Estate currently exports to China and has been doing so successfully for the past 12 months. Wines from the North East region of Victoria and southern New South Wales are quickly gaining accolades around the world, with many Rutherglen wineries having recently taking home awards from the prestigious International Wine Challenge (IWC) held in London. The IWC, now in its 31st year, is known as the world’s finest and most meticulously judged wine competition which assesses every wine blend and judges each for its faithfulness to style, region and vintage. Throughout the rigorous judging processes, each medal winning wine is tasted on three separate occasions by at least 10 different judges and awards include medals (Trophy, Gold silver, Bronze) and commended and Great Value awards. This year, trophies and medals were won by many Rutherglen wineries, mainly for their fortified varieties, including wines from Morris Wines, Stanton & Killeen Wines, All Saints Estate and Campbells Wines.

“We have won quite a few medals over the past three years which means a lot, particularly to our London distributor,” Ms Brown said. “The IWC is highly regarded internationally and the fact that many of these awards are coming from the same region makes more of a punchy statement. “We are a relatively tiny region getting quite a lot of recognition. “We all work so hard and the wines we are submitting are good so it is great to win and we always hope to win,” she said. These award-winning winemakers are all part of the Winemakers of Rutherglen membership-based association that formed in 1992. There are now 20 wineries involved with the association’s prime focus being the promotion of the wineries and their products through co-operative marketing. The Winemakers have developed a number of events within the region to promote tourism and wine sales. These include the Tastes of Rutherglen and Rutherglen Winery Walkabout.

THE 2014 Australian Sheep & Wool Show had a record number of entries across the competition board, attracting an increase in visitors to Bendigo’s Prince of Wales Showgrounds. With close to 3000 sheep entries and 500 eeces from all states, the biggest show of its type in the world has experienced a three-fold increase in the 15 years it has been held. The show’s youth component, with junior competitions and judging has also has a year-on-year increase and this component of the event will continue to be expanded by the Australian Sheep Breeders’ Association. The Woolcraft section had an increase in entries, with exhibitors coming from both metropolitan and regional areas to take part. Represented on the ground via the Australian Sheep Breeders’ Association were combined holdings of stock and production worth more than $895 million. A mere seven per cent of primary producers who attended the show produce 163,000 prime lambs, 220,000 surplus sheep and 26,000 bales of wool per year, as well as supplying lamb for 200,000 Australians. Conference offers advice RQ EHHI SUR¿ WV GOTAFE together with other industry leaders are providing an opportunity for beef producers to learn about pathways to efficient and profitable beef enterprises. The 2014 North East Beef Conference is an initiative of the Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI), Goulburn Ovens TAFE (GOTAFE) and Meat and Livestock Australia’s ‘More Beef from Pastures’ program. To be held at the University of Melbourne’s Dookie campus on Wednesday, August 13, the conference brings leading industry speakers and producers together to hear and discuss ideas and challenges around increasing efficiency and profitability in their beef enterprises. The conference will be preceded by a dinner featuring guest speaker Member for Benalla and local beef producer and veterinarian Bill Sykes on the Tuesday evening. With Mr Sykes’ broad knowledge and passion for the agriculture industry, he will speak on the topic ‘Challenge in the beef industry is not new’. The conference program combines topics relevant to all beef enterprises, covering elements of the feed base through

to markets in a program that includes practical and informative sessions. DEPI BetterBeef project manager Darren Hickey said the conference program included the ideal combination of presenters, including beef producers, industry experts and specialists. “Presenting producers include Bill Wilson from Edi, David Webb-Ware from Yea and Ian Locke, a seed-stock producer from Holbrook, with each bringing an aspect of their experiences in how they have applied new theory or approaches to their enterprises. “Then specialists Fiona Baker, Brian Cumming, Terry Farrell and Mark Inglis will provide the theory behind the practical applications. “The beef conference, now in its fourth year, will highlight industry developments which can be applied on-farm, arming producers with the tools to improve production efficiencies,” Mr Hickey said. The conference is $45 per person for the conference only, $135 inclusive of accommodation and dinner, or $65 per person for dinner only. Equitana receives $30,000 grant THE State Government has allocated $30,000 to assist in the promotion of Australia’s major equine event, Equitana which is to be held at the Melbourne Showgrounds in November. Equitana Melbourne 2014 has received the grant from Tourism Victoria’s ‘Events Program’ in the hope that it will generate significant economic benefit for Victoria. Equitana is a combination of trade show, education, competition and equinerelate entertainment that brings together a collection of horse breeds, disciplines, products and services which is unique to the equine industry. Minister for Tourism, Louise Asher said the industry has a strong relevance to regional Victoria, with Equitana having a substantial economic and educational impact on the state due to its business focus. “It will feature the largest gathering of equine and rural sector exhibitors in Australia and attract some of the world’s best equine presenters,” Ms Asher said. “Dressage, show jumping, camp drafting and carriage driving competitions will be held in the purpose built, 5000 seat indoor arena and the 4000 seat outdoor competition arena. “There will be four nights of entertainment highlighting professional horsemen sharing their knowledge alongside equine and musical entertainment.” A ‘Breeders’ Village’ display arena will showcase international and Australian horse breeds as well as an interactive area showcasing trucks and floats. More than 47,000 people attended the 2012 event, with 46 per cent coming from interstate and three per cent from overseas.

Diversify the best advice for Everton Upper farmer Give our readers a quick snapshot of your farm at Everton Upper. Our farm is sheep grazing paddocks on undulating ground - granite rocky country outcrops with some flatter areas of improved pasture. We have a few spring fed dams that usually hold water in dryer times. How long have you been a farmer? I grew up on a farm near to where our current farm is. My great grandfather settled on that property and it is still currently owned and operated as a farm by our family. Tell us about your family. My wife, Charmane and I have lived on our farm since we were married in 1991. We have two sons, Luke, 17 and Adam, 14. Luke is currently studying VCE and Adam is in year 9, but would rather be running the farm every day. Best advice or farming tip you have received? Diversify. Don’t have all your eggs in one basket. Keep your farming options open and have a back-up plan. Describe your perfect day. Spring, lambing, making hay and everything going well and grass growing. What is the best thing about being a farmer? Being my own boss and you make the decisions.

FARMER TO FARMER Dean Bennmann

Having a great group of other farmers to discuss ideas and plans with. What is the worst thing about being a farmer? Unreliable income. Mother Nature. Not knowing if you are going to have grass/feed and water for the

stock in the future. If you could be someone else for a day, who would that be and why? Paul Worsteling from the television show “Ifish”. He has the dream job - fishing all day in the most amazing locations and actually catching lots of fish.

Get with the strength at Le Martres ACCORDING to Le Martres Limousins stud principal Leon Martin the cattle he breeds presents some major benefits to the beef and meat industries. After 16 years of measuring and deliberately focusing breeding for higher Intramuscular Fat the stud’s 58 head returned an average of 3.8 per cent, with a range of 2.7 per cent to 4.5 per cent, with the test range being zero to six per cent. “This result is extremely

pleasing as our original goal was to achieve between three and four per cent IMF/marbling,” Mr Martin said. “Marbling is terribly important for meat quality and the subsequent eating experience for consumers. “Our cattle have now achieved this important milestone. The Le Martres Limousin Stud was founded in 1988 with the purchase of its first females from the Manor Hill Limousin Stud.

At this time, the stud was operated in conjunction with Bunding Park Limousin Stud located at Ballan, Victoria owned by Bert and Ruth Bowden. In 1994, the Martin family purchased the property named ‘Rosemont Farm’ located at Table Top, NSW, and the Le Martres Limousin Stud was relocated to Table Top, NSW. The stud then acquired an additional selection of older apricot and black Limousin cows and bulls to

expand the herd size. Older cattle were selected as proven breeders and as having been proven to be structurally correct by time. horned and polled bulls will be available. “Le Martres has specifically selected Limousin cattle that have outstanding longevity as this is a very important trait for maximising on-farm resource efficiency and optimising profitability,” Mr Martin said. “Your inspection of our Limousin cattle is welcomed throughout the year.” For more information visit www.lemartreslimousins. com.

Mr Martin said. “The carcases offer extra meat yield, fine grain meat, marbling and even fat cover by selection. “Consequently, the cattle can be killed younger and offer still ideal portion sizes for both the butcher and customer. For the first time, the stud recently offered pedigree females by online tender for sale, complementing the upcoming bull sale scheduled for Friday, February 27, 2015 where a selection of

Good buying at Kanimbla and capacity. To do this they source genetics from Australia, New Zealand, Canada and more recently, the United States. The stud principals see showing as a way of observing trends in seedstock and as a reference point with how the Kanimbla herd is developing. They have enjoyed success in this environment having won many broad ribbons at Royal shows. Kanimbla Poll Herefords have been breeding for over 20 years and follow on with many great successes including past Supreme Poll Hereford exhibits at Sydney Royal, Melbourne Royal, Canberra Royal and Bathurst Royal and Interbreed Champion Bull at the Bendigo Beef Expo in 2008. It has been runner up in the interbreed at Canberra Royal on three occasions and once in Melbourne. Kanimbla operates on the philosophy that to provide bulls that meet the different speciďŹ cations that cattlemen require, it must maintain well-framed cows. This enables it to use the sire selection to create the appropriate bulls

to meet the market. K a n i m b l a r eg a r d s Breedplan as a useful ally but only after visual analysis of the animal. The principals always welcome visitors wanting to go through the herd and they keep in contact with buyers to ensure feedback into the breeding program. Value for money the main focus THIS spring, Irelands Angus will offer 50 outstanding, easy doing bulls at their on-property sale to be held on Friday, September 12, 2014. Irelands Angus principal Corey Ireland says this year he is catering for the more varied needs of his clients by offering 25 rising twoyear old bulls and 25, 18 month old bulls. “We feel by offering the different age groups it gives clients the opportunity to purchase bulls for both breeding seasons,” Mr Ireland says. Celebrating 30 years of breeding stud Angus cattle, Mr Ireland says he is excited for the 2014 spring sale, believing them to be an excellent representation of how the Irelands genetics are continuing to produce consistent, affordable, easy doing cattle. According to Mr Ireland, this year’s sale bulls display a fantastic cross section of the stud’s herd, with the first Cricklewood Cracker (NZ) calves for sale. Some of the other sires up for auction include, Raff Dynamite D345, Irelands Fletcher F1, Rennylea Edmund E11 and the last calves from Irelands Zulu Z20. “I am very happy with the way they have grown into strong, thick topped, soft skinned bulls. “We are very proud of our bulls and we select on the basis of conformation, structure, growth and fertility,” he said.

CRICKLEWOOD CRACKER 399: Crackers first crop of Irelands calves will be sold at the upcoming Irelands Spring Bull Sale.

He believes the strength of genetics will determine the consistency of the progeny, “no matter the market”. Mr Ireland said that his main goal is to add profitability to his clients’ programs and measures his own success by the success of his clients. The bulls are backed by generations of performance genetics, are semen tested, vaccinated for Vibrio, tested free for Pesti and are ready to work. Mr Ireland maintains his main focus is value for money. “Of the 356 bulls we sold in 2012-2013, 85 per cent sold between

$3000 - $5000. “We believe this is affordable for every budget,” he said. The 50 bulls will be sold onproperty, Friday, September 12, 2014, by auction, commencing at 1pm on the Kyeamba property, 45 kilometres SE of Wagga Wagga. Inspections start at 10.30am. An open afternoon and barbecue lunch will be held to inspect the bulls on Friday, August 12. Breeders establish joint venture stud “The flock has been managed along commercial sheep farming lines, with a very strict culling policy in place. “Only the best Charollais have been used in AI and ET programs,” he said. Charollais Australia’s stud breeders use a number of performance recording tools including ultrasound eye muscle scanning, weighing lambs at birth, weaning and scanning, CT scanning, progeny testing, lamb survivability and assessing functional traits. “There is no point breeding high index sheep that can’t walk properly or who are too lean,” Mr McDougall said. “CT Scanning speeds up the rate of genetic gain of lean meat production enabling us to breed more meat where it is worth most - in the loin and hind quarter. “Using extensive transfer, Lambplan recording and CT scanning we are developing our Charollais into a prime lamb sire very much suited to today’s prime lamb market.” Feedback from farmers using Charollais rams is that lambing is very easy and lamb mortality low. Campbelltown farmer Ben Fawcett said lambs that were born last year were the best lambs he has ever had.

“Their weight and shape set them apart. “Watching them come down the race mixed in with our other second cross lambs you could see that they are 50 millimetres wider across the back end,” Mr Fawcett said. The stud breeders select for structural and functional soundness which includes good feet and legs, a wedge shaped body for easy lambing, length of loin - many Charollais carry an extra vertebrae, good muscling especially in the loin and the rump, a bare face, a bare breech and clean points and fineness of bone. Ewes for embryo transfer are selected on both their carcass traits and growth rate along with their ability to perform as a mother (weaning weight of lambs). “We want Charollais to be up with the best when it comes to kilograms of lamb weaned per 100 ewes joined. “And ultimately we want our rams to perform for you – for lambs sired by our rams to be easily born, to be quick to their feet and suckle, to grow very quickly off grass and produce a quality carcase with a high meat yield,” Mr McDougall said. The flock is Brucellosis Accredited, Johne’s disease monitored and vaccinated (MN1-V). For more information visit www. charollais.com.au.

THE owners of Charollais Australia in Hamilton, Victoria aim to sell rams that are very functional, full of meat and produce lambs that will be profitable for its clients. Charollais Australia – Australia’s foundation and largest Charollais stud - is a joint venture between Colin, Heather and Anthony Hilsdon and Ian McDougall of Farmgene Pty Ltd, Gladstone, South Australia. Colin and Heather Hilsdon emigrated from the United Kingdom (UK) in 2008 with sons Anthony and David, his wife Claire and son Ryan. They ran a flock of Charollais in the UK and were keen to establish a stud Charollais flock in Australia, so in 2008 they arrived in Australia to do just that. Ian McDougall, an Australian vet specialising in artificial reproduction in sheep has lived and worked in the UK for the past 27 years. He has extensive knowledge of the Charollais breed in the UK and abroad, spending many years inseminating and carrying out embryo transfer on Charollais sheep. “In 2005, Farmgene imported Charollais embryos from the UK,” Mr McDougall explains. “Since then the flock has gradually become ‘Australianised’ and increased in size.

Putting the lump back in the rump IT has only been seven years since Trevor Troeth and Ian McDougall met up at Sheepvention and decided that they would introduce the Ile de France breed to Australia. Mr Troeth has bred Poll Dorsets at Heywood, Victoria, for many years after growing up on this father’s Corriedale stud. He felt that the Poll Dorset and White Suffolk had lost conformation - in particular hind quarter muscling - in the pursuit of growth rate and lean-

ness, however he saw a breed that could put the “lump back into the rumpâ€?. Mr McDougall ďŹ rst discovered the Ile de France breed on a trip to the Paris Agricultural Show in 1988 and was involved in establishing the ďŹ rst Ile de France ocks in Canada and Mexico in the mid-1990s. He felt that with the breed’s ability to cycle all months of the year, its great carcass, white wool and its do-ability the time was right to introduce

Ile de France to Australia. Ile de France Australia was then formed and after “a lot of hard workâ€? it is now a successful sheep stud situated north of Portland. “Our aim is to produce rams that sire easy lambing, early maturing lambs with great shape, that grow fast and ďŹ nish quickly off mum and dress out well,â€? Mr McDougall said. “We birth weigh all of our lambs and cull any ewes and rams that are implicated in

breeding, oversized or incorrectly shaped lambs. “Our stud rams are selected from those that have grown fast to weaning, with positive fat, good eye muscle and hind quarter, he said. Many of the stud’s clients have reported how easy lambing the breed is including Andrew and Sheree Mills who run 1200 merino ewes on the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. Mr Mills has used Ile de France rams over their merinos

since 2010 and have had no lambing problems at all. “Our 50 kg merino ewe lambs have been joined to Ile de France and have tailed over 100 per cent for the past two years, Mr Mills said. “I wouldn’t believe it if I hadn’t seen how easily these young ewes lambed with my own eyes. Other clients have joined the Ile de France breed to Poll Dorsets, Suffolks and Dohnes all with outstanding results. Ile de France Australia’s

breeders do not show or supplementary feed their ock grain in order to speed up their growth rate “or to make them look prettyâ€?. “All our stock is presented and sold off grass,â€? Mr Troeth said. “We combine Lambplan recording with strict visual appraisal. “The Ile de France has fantastic hind quarter muscling and this is selected for using visual appraisal,â€? he said. AUSTRALIAN Pump Industries (Aussie Pumps) has expanded its range of personal protection equipment to now include professionally designed boots that can be used in harsh environments. The Aussie Jet-Stop boots are specifically designed for use with high pressure blasters of up to 500 Bar (7300 psi). According to Aussie Pumps high pressure safety trainer Hamish Lorenz, there has been a gap in the market for comfortable, practical footwear capable of withstanding accidental jetting from pressure cleaners. “Operators have been using steel toe-caps gum boots until now. “Toes are protected however the high pressure water jets can slice open a rubber boot. “Water sprayed under pressure penetrates flesh and can carry dangerous bacteria or poisons. “This can result in horrible infections leading to amputation or even death,” Mr Lorenz said. He added that high pressure, protective footwear has been available for a number of years however it can be cumbersome and difficult to walk in, and it is impractical for operators of lower pressure

machines that need mobility. The new Aussie Jet-Stop boots are made from vulcanised rubber, providing safe, waterproof comfort for the operator. For maximum user protection the boots come with steel toecaps and steel inserts in the sole to prevent puncturing by sharp objects. The boots are color coded to identify the areas of protection – the black region covers the talus, the lower shin, toes and heals. They are also CE certified as suitable for use with rotating water jet

nozzle or flat angle nozzle sprays of up to 500 Bar. The soles of the boots are designed for excellent grip to reduce the risk of slipping, particularly in icy conditions. The boots can also be fitted with spikes and have an adjustable strap to ensure ease of taking on and off. Aussie Pumps offers a full range of personal safety equipment including jackets, trousers, overalls, aprons and gloves. For more information visit www. aussiepumps.com.au.

kubota.com.au ONLINE TRAINING: Elders Insurance general manager Jon Fox explaining the new farm safety website to farmer David Wallace.

Elders offers online quad bike training A national registered training organisation, Top Rider has worked with Elders Insurance to produce the online video training series that can be accessed at www.farmsafetyfirst.com.au. The safety campaign will include the screening of some farm safety community service messages on rural and regional televisions across Australian. According to a 2013 Safe Work Australia report, incidents involving vehicles accounted for 71 per cent of fatalities on farms over the eight years from July 1, 2003 to June 30, 2011. “As a regional insurer, what we’re doing is simply providing some easily accessible information that we hope will raise awareness and that can help farmers, their families and workers, right now to be safe if they are using these vehicles,” Mr Fox said.

ELDERS Insurance is tackling the issue of quad bike safety by providing online training aimed at improving the safety knowledge of those who use quad bikes or ATVs (all-terrain vehicles). The regional and rural insurer is making available a short, online video training series on a dedicated safety portal aimed at providing practical knowledge about how to operate a quad bike safely. Elders Insurance general manager John Fox said the insurer is encouraging everyone who lives or works on a farm in Australia and who has access to these types of vehicles to undertake the online training. “It’s straightforward and will only take 10 to 15 minutes, but the knowledge and awareness you will gain about how important safety is when operating these vehicles could save your life or that of a loved one.” Mr Fox added that he was aware that Elders’ training is not a complete solution to the high on-farm accident rate but the insurer wanted to do what it could to help reduce the occurrence of accidents on farms. “Our message is simple and clear – be better informed, be aware of how you’re using quad bikes and whether they are appropriate for your farming activities and, importantly, be safe,” Mr Fox said. As an added incentive to encourage completion of the training and assessment, Elders Insurance is running a competition with the major prize being a Sportsman ACE made by Polaris. Also teaming up with Elders Insurance for this campaign is quad bike and motorcycle training provider Top Rider.

aim to produce highquality silage because many things may and often do occur, meaning quality can be lower than targeted. It is important to remember the last two to three springs with wet winters or long wet spells in mid spring that occurred just when quality pastures were ready to be harvested for high-quality silage. Before making any silage two things should be considered: s #OWS SHOULD NEVER be underfed just to ensure the pit is full or a certain number of bales of silage is made, and s )T COSTS NEARLY TWICE AS much per tonne of dry matter (DM) to produce and feed back silage compared

Many farmers, having attended a Dairy Australia/Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI)-funded ‘Feeding Pastures for ProďŹ t’ program, can now identify when surplus pasture starts to occur much earlier than in the past and have seen the importance of high-quality silage to produce milk. ing this by cutting early, notwithstanding the poor harvesting conditions mentioned above. It is recommended to aim for the best possible scenario, acknowledging that pugged paddocks, inclement weather, machinery breakdowns, the late arrival of contractors, poor planning, etc. will occur, resulting in poorer quality silage to varying degrees, some of which can be avoided or minimised and some of which cannot.

The keys to getting and keeping high-quality silage include: #UT EARLY IN THE SEA son when pastures are at or near canopy closure, which is the optimum stage of growth for grazing in spring. If conditions do suit – and this will depend on soil type – and if the entire harvesting job is done well, a pasture ensiled at or slightly past grazing height will produce only marginally less milk than if that same pasture had been grazed by the cows. Yes, yields will be low and more paddocks may need to be harvested, but this is maintaining pasture quality in these cut acres and remaining areas of the farm.

DEPI expert says quality silage will produce more milk in cows From page 20

Yes, the contractors will squeal because crops will be much lighter than most contractors (and many farmers) will be used to, but the contractors will be in their rights to charge a bit more money to harvest light crops to cover their costs. However, farmers will win out because the high-quality silage will produce more milk than before and, if cut early enough when the surplus is being recognised, these paddocks should not miss a rotation and regrowth will be faster, thicker and of better quality. 2. Wilt and harvest as quickly as possible and have the forage in the pit or bale within 24 to 48 hours, if possible, though it isn’t always possible. The longer a mown crop takes to reach its target dry matter content to ensure it undergoes the most efficient fermentation, the higher the quality and DM losses. Also, an extended wilting period increases the risk of the next rainfall occurring, resulting in even higher losses. So, early in the season,

when the ground is damp, there’s little heat in the sun and it’s necessary to reach the target DM content as quickly as possible, how can farmers do this? Often this is not easily achieved, but with a few management tips and appropriate equipment it is worth the punt and can be achieved by: s ALLOWING THE DEW TO lift before mowing; s TEDDING THAT IS spreading the mown crop as soon as possible after mowing, probably retedding at least the next morning once the dew has lifted, and sometimes carrying out a third tedding for baling; or s MOWING PASTURES clovers and young lucerne stands with a flail or tyned-type mowerconditioner and cutting crops such as cereals cut at soft-dough stage, summer forages and mature lucerne with a roller-type mower-conditioner and leaving the swath as wide as possible (75 per cent to 90 per cent of the mower width); and s APPLYING A FERMEN tation-enhancing silage additive to encourage a desirable fermentation,

as the forage will most likely be slightly wetter than ideal. Each dollar spent on additive should ensure at least a three dollar to four dollar benefit – often more, occasionally less. 3. Compact stacks and bales as densely as possible. The poorer the compaction, the greater the amount of air trapped in the stack or bale and greater the DM and quality losses. For bulk stacks, chop material short and spread it in layers no thicker than about 150 millimetres. Roll slowly to allow the tractor weight to compact the forage. Baling slightly slower will increase bale density so set bale density as dense as possible on the baler. Chopping balers will increase density by eight per cent to 15 per cent. 4. Seal airtight as soon as possible after harvesting. Seal stack, don’t just cover them. Try to complete rolling immediately after harvest is finished. Avoid rolling the next morning as this just

New president for Grassland Society hopes to up membership make a living out of growing grass and the society brings together top quality people and information to help them improve. Replacing Marney Jones as president, Mr Whale grew up on a sheep property and completed a degree in agricultural science at the University of Melbourne. He has worked for the Department of Primary Industries as a sheep and wool development officer and managed a fine wool merino property in NSW. pared with the normal black/white sheets, if sealed well. It does cost extra, but after experiencing its benefits, many farmers are swinging to the twostep system. Individually stretchwrapped bales must have at least four layers of film applied over the entire bale and six layers if the forage or stubble on which it is sitting is stalky. Experience by many operators using most continuous in-line and large square bale wrappers has resulted in them now applying six layers to ensure a reliable and robust seal. If a white-grey mould is present in the silage, air has been or is present; this must be prevented in future. 5. Repair holes immediately using specific silage patching tape. Ensure the area to be patched is clean and dry and that repair tape of a similar color to the holed plastic is used to minimise the difference in contracting and expanding in hot/cool conditions, resulting in the seal leaking.

New hay app helps make sales quicker A NEW app that allows hay-making contractors and growers to assess the quality of their product has been launched by hay service and marketing company, Feed Central. Feed Central has developed the Australian-first app to give producers the ability to market their hay more promptly and to a wider audience. Feed Central quality assurance and supply manager Ian Wickham said the company was rolling out the program to accredit contractors and growers to do first-round quality assessment and to list hay directly with Feed Central starting with the 2014/2015 hay season. “It’s a great leap forward for the whole fodder industry,” Mr Wickham said. “There is no national grading system and

in the absence of national standards the app helps standardise assessments and gives buyers greater confidence to buy more hay sight unseen, while still allowing growers and contractors to market this product through their own channels. “Growers and contractors will be able to get their product online and available to sell much quicker. “With Feed Central’s unmatched turnaround time of 24 hours, by answering a few simple questions sellers of fodder are a chance to sell to the domestic database of more than 15,000 buyers within a few days,” he said. The new technology was developed inhouse and was built with ease of use for both user and buyer. For more information contact Feed Central on 1300 669 429.

JAMES Whale is the new president of the Grassland Society of Southern Australia (GSSA). The South-west Victorian farm business and livestock production consultant hopes to increase the society’s membership and to reactivate some branches that have been in a lull. The GSSA also wants to attract the attention of young producers, particularity those in the beef and sheep industries. “We’d like to show them how they can benefit from being in the society,” Mr Whale said. “The technical information on pasture production is fantastic and they would also benefit from the social and networking opportunities. “Sheep and beef producers alike

‘pumps’ more oxygen into the stack. Rolling should keep up with forage delivery from the paddock. The plastic sheets along the stack edges must be sealed airtight; not even a double row of tyres around the perimeter achieves this. Gravel bags filled with pea gravel or washed sand is ideal for this job along bunker walls and the stack surface. Another recent innovation for sealing stacks is the use of see-through 45 micron-thick oxygen barrier (OB) film. It is not UV-heat stabilised and is more than 20 times less susceptible to oxygen permeation than normal 125-mircron black/white plastic sheets. It can be incorporated (co-extruded) between the black and white layers of the sheets (onestep system) or placed on the stack and covered by either a heavy UVstabilised woven net or normal black/white film (two-step). Research has shown a saving of at least 10 per cent on the tops and shoulders of stacks com-

According to Alpine Angus manager Chris Oswin breeding stud cattle requires developing a system that incorporates careful herd monitoring, detailed performance recording and strict attention to detail. “Developing a system is the easy bit, sticking to it is the key, Mr Oswin said. “The beauty about it is if you get things right the consistency of your product increases dramatically. “In our cow herd we have been placing added emphasis on the basic fundamentals – temperament, structure and fertility and we have gone hard to ensure our females meet the standards we have set. “We are well known for certain traits and have stuck true to our type. “Our EBV’s are ďŹ rst class and we have just placed added emphasis on the areas that Breedplan numbers struggle to deal with.â€? Severely affected ewes may require intravenous fluids, electrolytes and glucose if they are recumbent. Ewes detected early in the course of the disease can respond well to oral propylene glycol or glycerine (eg 'Ketol' liquid). Preventing a decrease in nutrition prior to lambing can play a big role, as can avoiding management practices such as crutching that will take the sheep off food for a period. Feeding grain in the last couple of months of pregnancy (approx 0.25-1kg/head/day) can be protective.

Ewes lambing in our wintery conditions can be at an increased risk of pregnancy toxaemia. Approximately 60% of lamb growth occurs in the last 6 weeks of pregnancy. Ewes develop pregnancy toxaemia when the energy demands of the growing foetus are greater than the energy intake by the ewe. A reduction in the plane of nutrition of the ewe followed by even a short period of food deprivation during this period can lead to pregnancy toxaemia. The requirement of energy by the foetus causes low blood glucose in the ewe, and altered energy metabolism causing fat mobilisation, ketone production and increased cortisol levels. Ewes that are carrying more than one lamb are at an increased risk due to greater energy demands by the pregnancy. Treatment of ewes in the later stages of the disease is rarely successful - preventative strategies or early treatment is preferred. Early signs of the disease are separation from the mob, drowsiness, not eating, and blindness. Muscle tremors, twitching and salivation may develop, as well as a 'star gazing' posture and recumbency in later stages.
