China FTA needed VFF and Dairy Council want open and free world trade

NEW ATTRACTION: Milawa Parelli instructor Rachel Clarkson will be demonstrating her skills at this year’s Henty Machinery Field Days to be held on Tuesday, September 23 to Thursday, September 25. The world-renowned natural horse training method developed by US cowboy Pat Parelli is set to be a new drawcard for the 51st annual Henty Machinery Field Days. Parelli instructors will demonstrate training to help solve ground and ridden problems, from pushy and stubborn to scared and unpredictable horses to create a willing and co-operative partner for recreation, work or competition. Demonstrations will be staged each day of the Field Days during the lunch break in the yard dog trial area. Fiona Darling, of Illabo, NSW, Kaye Thomas, Howlong, NSW, and Rachel Clarkson, Milawa, Victoria, will stage demonstrations each day during the lunch break in the yard dog trial area. The Parelli instructors will be available on-site at Henty to answer questions and help riders understand their horse’s personality. There will also be lucky daily prizes and giveaways at stand A18. See pages 22-25 for more information on Henty Machinery Field Days.

RUSSIA’S ban on Australian food exports highlights the need for the Federal Government to deliver a strong Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with China according to the Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) and the Australian Dairy Industry Council (ADIC). VFF president Peter Tuohey said he trusts that the Federal Government will deliver an FTA with China that strips away tariff barriers that have previously hampered agriculture’s access to China. “Russia buys $400 million of our $38 billion in food and fibre exports,” Mr Tuohey said. “Compare that with what China could offer us in export growth under an FTA. “Australian grain, beef, sheepmeat, dairy and horticultural producers all stand to gain from an FTA with China, via the removal of import quotas and tariffs. “What’s happened in Russia just highlights the need for us to get strong FTAs in place that open up more mar-

kets for Australian exports, such as China. “The simple fact is China is the most populous nation on earth and we need to be growing the market for our farm produce with it,” he said. Australian Dairy Farmers president Noel Campbell said that Greater China (China, Hong Kong and Macau) is now Australia’s largest dairy market. “In 2013 Australia exported 138,000 tonnes of dairy product worth $552 million to Greater China - 19 per cent of total Australian dairy exports for the calendar year. “Sixteen million babies were born in China last year, and with a relaxation of the one child policy, that number is projected to increase to beyond 20 million babies annually in coming years. Having productive pastures heading into the spring and summer period is critical for a successful pastoral farming operation to have adequate feed on hand for calving and lambing. Pastures deteriorate over time, due to factors such as drought, wet weather causing pugging damage, overgrazing and so on. Lost pasture growth results in lost production and lost profit. Studies have shown a 20 – 40% reduction in pasture utilization and a 20 – 30% decline in pasture re-growth due to pugging damage. It is critical that you get paddocks back into full production as quickly as possible. Options include putting in a summer crop such as Chico chicory, Marco turnips or our new Pillar forage rape; over-sowing with high performance perennial ryegrass with an endophyte appropriate for the region and farming system; under-sowing with an Italian ryegrass, or full renovation where conditions allow it. The decision will depend on the extent of the pugging damage, the composition and performance of the pasture prior to pugging and your long term aims with those paddocks. Always opt for high performing varieties. Addressing the issue earlier rather than later will benefit overall pasture covers going into the spring. Contact me if you require any further information on pasture renovation options to overcome pugging damage or would like some personal on farm advice.

SPC’s future firm after investment recommences road which bisects the SPC site in Shepparton, forcing the company to reconsider and eventually return with an adjusted plan. The new, amended plan includes investment in a greater level of automation throughout the SPC facility to compensate for the logistical inefďŹ ciencies which remain on the divided site. The amended play also means SPC will have to exit some categories that cannot be accommodated on the Shepparton site because of a reduction in space. SPC managing director Peter Kelly said the CCA board’s decision to continue to support SPC was welcome news as it had been a very challenging process to compensate for the lost opportunity to make the plant more efďŹ cient. “Our new plan will involve far

Deputy Premier and Minister for State Development Peter Ryan said the decision was great for Shepparton and great for Victoria. “Victoria’s Goulburn Valley produces some of the cleanest, greenest fresh produce in the world, grown in the strictest environmental standards. “With CCA and SPC on board, that Goulburn Valley produce can be exported to Asia and the world in a modern, ready to eat format. “Despite multiple setbacks, SPC has worked with the Coalition Government and we’re proud to have delivered this great outcome for Shepparton and Victoria,â€? Mr Ryan said.

more automation than originally planned and fewer investment dollars going directly into the Shepparton economy and local construction jobs as a result of not being able to invest in major building works,â€? Mr Kelly said. “We have also had to make some tough decisions to progressively exit some product categories that, under the new plan, will simply not ďŹ t onto our main site. “However, we believe we have the resources and the plan to strengthen the business. “Already our new products like Sneaky Veg, Fruit in Coconut Water, Perfect Fruit and My Daily Fruit are doing well in the market and winning awards for their health beneďŹ ts. “We also have a number of innovative new snacks that will soon

and Food-Service dairy foods. Exports accounted for more than 51 per cent of MG’s revenue, however, increase in exports may not continue with the decline in international dairy prices and the impact of the Russian trade ban. The company’s net proďŹ t after tax was down from the previous year to $29.3 million from $34.9 million, but MG’s balance sheet was strengthened by the $36 million gain from the sale of its stake in Warrnambool Cheese and Butter. MG managing director Gary Helou said high international dairy food prices, underpinned by the strong demand from Asia

and the Middle East, and growth in its milk supply helped the company deliver a strong result. “We’ve seen another year of signiďŹ cant progress in our group safety performance,â€? Mr Helou said. “We will also continue our focus on delivering further efďŹ ciency and productivity gains across our business units during this year. “At the same time we are pushing forward with the value-added growth components of our strategy, which are starting to gather momentum, with the two daily pasteurised milk plants coming on line plus an additional $127 million capital expenditure

approved last year to bolster MG’s capabilities and market connectivity in our Consumer Cheese, Dairy Beverages and Nutritionals expansion. MG expects demand from Asia to remain strong with a net reliability on imports to satisfy the outgoing growth in per capita consumption. However, international dairy prices have declined significantly from last year’s historic highs mainly due to production growth in other exporting countries including New Zealand and the European Union (EU) and the compounding impact of high inventories in China and the recent Russian trade ban.

Foodbank exceeds expected target THE Australian grain industry has donated the equivalent of 8.8 million meals to the country’s largest food relief organisation, Foodbank Australia, to help feed those in need. Initiated by Grain TradeAustralia (GTA), a grain industry consultative group partnered

with Foodbank a year ago to coordinate the collection of the grain from individual growers through to major companies. Since then, Foodbank has received 1293 tonnes of grain and our, exceeding the 1000 tonne target set for the ďŹ rst year of the program. The grain has been used

in the production of essential items such as pasta and breakfast cereal to supplement Foodbank’s supply of key staple foods. GTA chairman Peter Reading said it was pleasing to see the industry get behind the initiative. “Charity can begin right at

the very start of the food chain. “We’re off to a good start, but there’s more we can do to help meet the demand of healthy grain-based foods for the welfare sector. “The target for the second year of the program is to double donations to 2000 tonnes. “The ultimate aim is to have

guaranteed food supply of 3000 tonnes of grain donated a year,â€? Mr Reading said. He said this ďŹ gure would provide all the grain Foodbank needs for its manufacturing program, which would be enough to produce the equivalent of 22 million meals. “Even a couple of tonnes

of grain will make a huge difference if enough people participate,â€? he added. Foodbank is a non-denominational, non-proďŹ t organisation that acts as a pantry to the welfare sector of Australia. For information on how to become involved visit www. graintrade.org.au/foodbank.

Reaping the rewards of continuing with good soil nutrition MURRAY GILBY, with wife Denise and son Colin, farm a 700 hectare cropping property at Kotupna, 30 kilometres east of Echuca. The farming enterprise includes cropping canola, barley and wheat, along with an agricultural contracting business, supplying customers with all their cropping needs.

The wheat and barley crops have been treated with TM Ag for ďŹ ve and six years. Graham was pleasantly surprised to ďŹ nd that our soil conditions are much better than he thought they would be after the short time we have been using the TM Ag. We are beginning to reap the rewards of sticking with TM Ag as we are using much lower fer-

tiliser rates at sowing and very, very low rates of nitrogen for top dressing. There has been very little freight moving over the last month - one or two loads per week - but that has been okay as I have been able to catch up with a few other things. We have also taken the opportunity to take a few days off and Denise and I have hitched up the

caravan and headed south to take a drive along the Great Ocean Road to Warrnambool. Forty years ago we ventured down here in our little red Torana and spent our honeymoon in a holiday at that no longer exists. How time changes things. Warrnambool is just about unrecognisable, but that could also be due to memory lapses too. We head home in time to head back to Melbourne for an Agco day of new releases and then a couple of days helping out at the preliminary ďŹ nal being hosted by our club, Picola United. Wild dog targets set for North East Vic Gippsland and the North East during autumn. “The work plans set operational targets for both private and public land for activities and measures including extending baiting, increasing effectiveness of trapping and decreasing the number of dog attacks, Mr Sykes said. “The community workshops captured local knowledge and experience, and involved

the development of community approaches for wild dog control in each of the 15 management zones. “This ensured all stakeholders, including public and private land managers, had the opportunity to contribute to the plans. The plans are a key part of the State Government’s Action Plan for Managing Wild Dogs in Victoria.

LOCAL channels have been seen owing with water and some farmers have been irrigating as dairy farmers and hay suppliers are seeing their paddocks dry out. Farming is a funny game as we are still drying out and are only just able to drive onto our paddocks again after a very wet winter. Colin has been sowing safower since mid-August and is still having to pick and choose the paddocks to work on as they dry out. At the end of July we hosted a Best presentation with New Zealand soil scientist, Graham Shepherd as the guest speaker. He spoke to a group of farmers about soil nutrition and this was followed by two crop inspections.

energy savings are then obvious. The farm has undergone considerable changes since it was founded by the Irish Wallace immigrants and it did not start as a dairy farm. “We have books of Sandy’s father where there are photos of them growing millet and tomatoes, Noelene said. “Then there were beef cattle before the dairy cows arrived. “It was Sandy’s father who introduced the dairy element, she added. Sandy Wallace said he has witnessed many changes over his lifetime on the property and feels “fortunate in the way the farms were divided. “The original dairy was a walk through and then there was the change to the herringbone dairy, Sandy said. “Then we went to a six a side herringbone and then when Cameron decided to come and work on the farm we extended that to a 14 a side herringbone. “And now we have gone to a rotary. Cameron said that he has enjoyed adding to “something that is going to be there for a long time.

heaters for the water for about three years this summer and that has been very good for us and worked well. “The hot water system has definitely saved us money. “It was probably the best option for hot water heating that we looked at,â€? he said. The entire solar system, which was designed and installed by Waterwheel Traders, has been designed for demand, not as an investment to feed the tariffs. With the Wallace family now content with the size of the dairy farm they are operating their priority for the next 20 years is to run their dairy enterprise as efďŹ ciently as possible. “Running costs are something you are always looking at and it is something you can control fairly easily,â€? Cameron said. “As well as the solar hot water we put in a variable speed drive on the vacuum pumps which has made the dairy quieter. “There have been a lot of beneďŹ ts by having it besides the noise pollution. “It means better milk production for the cows and if the pumps aren’t revving twice as hard they are going to last a lot longer and your

FAMILY FARM: Lenore, Cameron, Noelene and Sandy Wallace have invested in solar to cut down on their dairy’s energy costs.

THE Wallace family descendants that arrived in the Kiewa Valley from Ireland 145 years ago would not be able to comprehend the changes that have been made to not only the land they once farmed, but to the innovative changes that are continuing to drive the farming industry. The ďŹ fth generation of Wallaces’ to farm the same land today have decided to be forward thinking in an attempt to control their outputs by embracing new and natural technology. Cameron and Lenore Wallace, together with Cameron’s parents Sandy and Noelene Wallace, were looking for something to invest in that would provide them with some security to ensure their family farm would survive well into the future. ‘Old Warrawee’ is the Wallace family’s dairy farm situated in Kiewa. The family owns 488 acres and lease a further

160 acres including Kiewa River frontage. Having 300 cows to milk that produce, on average, 30 litres of milk per day supplied to Murray Goulburn, the Wallaces’ energy costs were drastically increasing, so they decided to install a solar panel unit, including solar hot water, a variable speed drive on their vacuum pumps and a plate cooler on their vat refrigerator which is set to pay for itself within ďŹ ve years. The Wallaces’ decision to invest in their 20 kilowatt solar system was mainly to reduce costs, but the environmental element to using solar as their main energy source was also appealing. “Obviously the main instigator was to cut costs, and I have never seen electricity come down in price,â€? Cameron said. “Originally when we built the dairy we didn’t know a lot about solar, but we got the information and the ďŹ gures and it became an option. “We have had the solar

Free trade to China From page 1

“The opportunities in China are great and Australia’s healthy and safe dairy products provide an opportunity for China to diversify from their main source of dairy products, New Zealand. “The Russian sanctions are a separate issue, but highlight the need for open and free world trade,” Mr Campbell said. He added that while it is difficult to determine which North East Victorian farmers supply to processors that export products to Russia, if world dairy prices fluctuate, farm gate prices will be affected in the future. The Australian Dairy Industry Council (ADIC) has made public its disappointment that Russia has imposed trade sanctions on Australian dairy products, beef, pork, fruit and vegetables, fish and poultry for 12 months in the wake of the MH17 disaster and Ukrainian conflict. Mr Campbell said the ADIC is concerned about the potential broader global market implications of the ban as Russia is an important market for the Australian dairy industry. In the fiscal year 2013-2014 about 22,000 tonnes of product, the majority of which is butter, worth around $112 million, was exported to Russia, representing a total of four per cent of Australian dairy exports. Russia is currently ranked as Australia’s 10th and 12th largest

dairy export market by value and volume, respectively. “The European Union (EU) currently exports approximately 500,000 tonnes of dairy products into Russia and with the EU also the target of Russian trade sanctions, wider impacts on the global market are to be expected,” Mr Campbell said. “The Australian dairy industry and dairy farmers may be financially impacted due to the ban and Russian consumers will have no access to the high-quality and safe products we provide.” Mr Campbell said the ADIC has been involved in discussions with both Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and the Department of Agriculture on the Russian sanctions and appreciates the efforts the government is making on this issue. Mr Tuohey also said that it was important that a FTA with China is seen as an opportunity for growth and not a threat. “An FTA with China means more Australian jobs,” Mr Tuohey said. “Dairy already directly employs 43,000 people and even more along the supply chain. “But we can employ more if the deal with China goes ahead.” United Dairyfarmers of Victoria president Tyran Jones weighed in on the issue and dismissed fears that FTA-driven growth would lead to a shortage on Australian supermarket shelves. “The fact is we can supply

Australian and Chinese consumers with more than enough, safe, reliable dairy products, from drinking milk to cheese, yoghurt and infant formula,” Mr Jones said. “And I can assure every Australian that our dairy farmers can produce more than enough milk to meet their needs. “We have the resources, skill, land and water to produce far more.” Mr Jones said every Victorian dairy farmer should be proud of the contribution they make to the nation’s economy and should be demanding their local politicians do all they can to get the Chinese FTA across the line. He said that China offered Australia the opportunity to grow more food and jobs on the back of a more efficient and profitable industry. “The fact is, as China’s wealth grows so does its people’s demand for protein, dairy and meat. “Australia needs to be at the front of the line when it comes to meeting Chinese demand. “We need to take advantage of what we’re good at – food production – and grow the business, not look for excuses to keep the door closed.” Mr Jones said New Zealand already has an FTA with China giving it a huge tariff advantage over Australian dairy exports. “Australian farmers want an FTA that means our exports to China are tariff-free by 2019,” he said.

IT is that time of the year again to consider making silage as early in the season as practicable. Ideally, you should only consider conserving silage when you have a ‘true’ surplus of feed, that is, when you have more feed available than the milking herd can consume. If you can both recognise when this is starting to occur and harvest it early, you have taken the ďŹ rst step to conserving pasture of the best quality. However, to end up with this same high-quality silage at feed out, you will need to use best practices for all the harvesting and storage steps, from mowing the pasture to wilting and then to storage. The longer that mown pasture lies on the ground wilting, the greater the DM and quality losses. So, the quicker the wilt, the better the end product. Five key points to follow for fast wilting times in spring to ensile pasture are: 1. Mow as soon as a morning dew has lifted. Wilting commences immediately after the

BETTER SILAGE: Narrow windrows should be avoided as they prevent fast wilting.

pasture being cut. During spring, ideally mow pasture after the dew has lifted in the morning and obviously when the risk of rain is low. 2. Ensure tractor, mower and rakes are in good working order. All mowers or mower conditioners being used must be in good working order and especially with sharp blades as blunt ones cause substantially increased fuel consumption and smashes the grass stubble, which delays its recovery by several days. 3. Wilt pasture to ideal DM range as quick as possible.

Conventional mowers only cut pasture, whereas mower conditioners/super conditioners involve a process that cuts and either crimps and crushes the cut pasture. This damages the stems and outer waxy layers (cuticle) of plants, both which encourage moisture to more freely escape from the cut pasture. Leaves dry faster than stems of a cut forage and therefore, the more stemmy a forage such as lucerne or sorghum, the more likely leaf shatter will occur at raking and baling. Using a conditioner will

speed the rate of moisture loss in the stems, so tending to even up the leaf/stem drying rates. 4. Increase wilting rates by considering the use of mower conditioners/super conditioners and tedders. Compared to traditional mowers, mower conditioners and super mower conditioners usually create the fastest wilting times. However, these mowers and especially the super mower conditioners are more expensive to purchase and operate, and require the most kilowatts of power to work.

Additionally, in the event of rain, a mown conditioned swath will reabsorb moisture more rapidly than an unconditioned swath, and may lose more nutrients. An investment in a tedder or tedder rake may be more beneďŹ cial for several reasons. They can also noticeably increase the wilting rate of an unconditioned swath and are generally cheaper to buy and operate. Also, early in the season or in the event of rain, a crop can be retedded as required. 5. Have wide swaths. Try to rake into windrows for baling or forage harvesting when the leaves are still durable and so won’t be shattered by being too dry. N a r r ow w i n d r ow s should be avoided as they prevent fast wilting. If rain is threatening, possibly consider raking into narrow windrows and respreading when the sun returns. For more information on how to achieve fast wilting times to aid good silage conservation, visit www.dairyaustralia.com. au/Pastures-and-Feeding/ Pastures-forages-andcrops/Silage-and-hay. aspx.

FOR the ďŹ rst time in 58 years, the Australian Agricultural Contractors Association (AACA) will not publish suggested rates for various forms of agricultural contracting. The AACA has just published, via rural retailers, lists of its members and jobs contractors will undertake with blank spaces for employers to ďŹ ll with quotes they get. Included is an explanation of how contractors arrive at their quotes. AACA secretary and retired agricultural contractor Len Smyth

said it had been too easy for nonmember contractors to simply undercut the previously published ďŹ gures by 10 per cent. “What most farmers do not realise is that they could be risking their farms if they employed part time or gumboot agricultural contractors on a nod, handshake or a she’ll be right mate comment,â€? Mr Smyth said. “Business done by professional agricultural contractors should not be started just by a handshake. “If a problem gets to court, the judge or magistrate will say, ‘Show me the contract’.

“But if the parties can’t, it will be a case of see you later. Before retiring from contracting, Mr Smyth provided his customers with a 16 page document that included a written quote, code of conduct, conditions of service, a contract of engagement and copies of his high risk licences. Issues mostly arise from absentee landlords. “When a contract combination is a gumboot contractor and a lifestyle city–based farmer, the result can be disastrous unless there are written instructions and a contract, Mr Smyth said.

“Gumboot contractors don’t give a continental if the hay’s wet. “Members from the AACA are conscious of things like biosecurity and spreading weeds and diseases, so they all clean their machines when moving from one farm to another. “For example, many people using conditioners in fodder crops don’t know how to set them up properly and the conditioner gets the blame when it’s actually the operator. “And the proper settings don’t just vary from job to job; they can change within a paddock.

National sales manager for Yamaha’s Sky Division in Australia Mike Johnson said he is excited about the new commercial opportunities this addition to the RMAX will provide. “Precision agriculture is an industry growing rapidly in Australia. “The new camera will not only aid farmers and land managers in controlling and monitoring their land, it will also open up numerous other industries to the benefits of UAV technology. “These industries might include search and rescue, mining and surveying; it’s only a matter of tailoring the technology to these specific applications, and the CM100 is just the first example of that,” Mr Johnson said.

MouseAlert project leader Peter West said the website enables farmers to record mouse activity in their local area to inform their community about changes in mouse numbers and damage. “It will also assist growers in determining when to implement control measures in advance of a possible plague. “It can be used by mobile device users in the field, and a new community facility will enable farmers to create online groups and

share their observations of mouse activity among members,” Mr West said. The next stage of MouseAlert’s development will be a notification system so members of a group can be alerted to changes in mouse activity in their area as soon as it happens, enabling a co-ordinated, local response. A mobile phone app is also currently being developed. MouseAlert can be accessed at www.mousealert. org.au.

Farm insurance and you MOST homeowners understand the importance of liability insurance. If someone visits their property and is injured, the homeowner can be held responsible. Many people have found out the hard way what not having liability cover can mean for their finances. According to Elders Insurance Wangaratta agent John Houghton a family barbecue or friendly pool party can quickly take a turn for the worse and lead to major costs, however, business owners must think of liability in multiple ways. “Just as with homeowners, businesses must be aware that a client or employee could one day get injured on the premises and leave the owner liable for medical bills to lawsuits. “Business liability insurance is designed to keep business owners financially protected if they are found liable. “Even if you’re ultimately not at fault, the legal costs associated with lawsuits can be financially devastating, making insurance a key

form of defence,” Mr Houghton said. He added that businesses must think about other forms of liability. “If a business provides goods or services to the public, and an accident occurs as a result of those goods or services, the business can be held liable. “Whether it’s something you manufacture, sell in a store or deliver, you can be left liable if someone is injured, killed, or their property is damaged. “With this in mind, it’s easy to see how liability insurance should be a key focus of business insurance. “While regular people only need to worry about their property, a business must also keep in mind its professional services and how they might come back to bite them. “Fortunately, there are many insurance options available to help protect businesses,” Mr Houghton said. FIELD DAY PRESIDENT: President of the Elmore Field Days committee Frank Harney said he is looking forward to the ‘Taste more at Elmore’ feature at this year’s event.

million and is being continuously enhanced by the construction of additional buildings, for both the public and exhibitors, and provision of additional services including equipment demonstration areas. In the last few years a bi-annual Demonstration Day, devoted to tillage, cultivation, spraying and fertilising and other input handling has been successfully staged on the Field Days site. This is both seasonally relevant and of practical benefit to farmers in the region complimenting the focus on hay and silage production equipment during October. A distinct advantage of the site is the adequate space available for crop trials or other in field demonstrations. Elmore Field Days is a community owned and run, not for profit

organisation that strives to maintain its fundamental purpose - an unbiased service to agriculture and community with flow on economic benefit to regional areas. “Everything is shaping up very nicely at the moment,” Mr Harney said. “It’s all drying out, which will be just in time for the crop demos, so it will be a good opportunity to see the machinery at its best. “I would really like to thank the girls in the Elmore office for putting this all together in the time frames we all work under. “The office staff correlates everything and the committee worked tirelessly to present the venue in the best condition possible. “The Elmore Field Days is just going from strength to strength,” he said.

FOOD and wine is one of the main features at this year’s Elmore Field Days with the organisers keen to showcase plenty of local produce in the new food and wine pavilion. According to the president of the Elmore Field Days committee Frank Harney, the new pavilion will host about 21 exhibitors which is expected to be a drawcard at the 2014 event. “This year the site is absolutely full,” Mr Harney said. “We have been inundated this year, with about 100 more on the waiting list. “We have opened up a new area for food tastings – Taste more at Elmore – which will feature cheeses, wines, salamis, with all exhibitors having to provide tastings. “All the exhibitors have produced all these food and wine products from their own land,” he said. Mr Harney added that another new exhibit this year is the American car display, which will be alongside the usual vintage machinery display. “We also have an increased number of exhibitors displaying their organic or natural fertilisers as opposed to always relying on the synthetic stuff and of course the arts and crafts general interest area will be of great interest to visitors again,” he said. The 2014 General Interest pavilion will provide the opportunity to enjoy the many cottage and commercial displays and demonstrations over the three days. The Country Women’s Association of Victoria will display and demonstrate a variety of both new and old handicrafts. Elmore has gained recognition as one of Australia’s premier agricultural field days. The first Elmore Field Days were held in October 1964 after a voluntary committee organised the first comprehensive display of farming equipment and services alongside the Campaspe River. The permanent site now has a developed cost approaching $2.5

Chuck on Charlie Carp, save a river AN environmentally friendly, effective all-purpose liquid fertiliser made in Deniliquin is cleaning up the waterways of the Murray Darling Basin by catching introduced European carp and turning them into fertiliser. Perfect for lawns, citrus trees, vegetables and seedlings, Charlie Carp has had huge success commercially too on wheat, barley, canola and pasture. European carp were introduced into the waterways of the Riverina in the 1940s by a man who was denied a licence to farm them. As an act of vengeance, he let the ďŹ sh loose into the surrounding rivers. Producing more than one million eggs per year, European carp had bred proliďŹ cally over half a century to a point where in 1995 they had become such a destructive pest that something had to be done because native ďŹ sh were suffocating. So along came Charlie Carp which used the whole ďŹ sh to make liquid fertiliser. Bursting with protein, omega 3 fatty acids and all the vital trace elements essential for a perfect fertiliser it is building its reputation as not only an extremely effective liquid fertiliser but also as an environmental advocate for cleaner rivers. Economical and easy to use in watering systems and boom sprays the fertiliser goes to work immediately and cereal crops have never looked so green or canola owers so yellow. With an NPK of 10:2:6 just one dose

of Charlie Carp will boost crop immune systems, stimulate new growth and crop strength as well as condition the soil for future growth. For domestic use there are one, ďŹ ve and 20 litre drums and a 2.2 litre spray pack. Commercially there are 200 litre drums and 1000 litre shuttles. Charlie Carp can be purchased directly from the factory by phoning 1300 305 963 or at Bunnings and all leading garden centres.

Recycling farm materials into fashion Ag Art Wear Competition has record number of entries THE Ag Art Wear Competition is back at this year’s Elmore and District Machinery Field Days with a record number of entries on display during the three days in October. Coordinator of the general interest area and spokesperson for the competition, Joyce Giffin, said the competition is for a wearable ‘work of art’ including accessories created from materials and items of an agricultural nature found on a farm. “Garments in previous competitions have been made from frost cloth, copper, grain, electric fence tape, beer bottle tops, common wool packs, hessian, rubber tyres, ear tags, hay bales, twine, glass and even old parts of cars,” Mrs Giffin said. “A big variety of materials are used and they fashion it into a garment. “Materials can be purchased at a hardware store, just as long as the material can be found in an agricultural environment.” The Ag Art Wear Competition is open to everyone and is divided into four sections - Avant Garde, Designer, Under 21 and a Hat section. There are special conditions of entry and Mrs Giffin emphasised that one of the most important of the conditions is that “the garment must allow free body movement and not injure, scratch or be of a hindrance to the model wearing the garment”. “It must be of a weight that can be comfortably worn and carried,” she said. “It is also important that the creation be durable enough to be worn at least six times during the length of the field days and that commercial dress fabric, hats, shoes etc is allowed but judges will deduct points for the use of non-agricultural materials. Local models are sourced from Elmore and Rochester to wear the “way out creations” and take part in the fashion parade on the catwalk in the Auditorium Marquee. The fashion parade takes place at 11am and 2pm each day of the field days, with the winners announced after the 2pm parade on Thursday, October 9.

WEARABLE ART: The Ag Art Wear Competition is about creating wearable art using materials found in agriculture.

See us at Elmore Field Days

LOCAL MODELS: Models from Elmore and Rochester are used to showcase the “way out” creations.

“It is quite professional now with the models wearing the creations,” Mrs Giffin said. “When the competition started in 2001 those that entered the competition had to model their own designs. “We had 12 entries then and this year we have about 50 entries. “And our generous sponsors provide cash prizes for the winners of each section.” The best 12 garments from last year’s competition were displayed at various places of the field day’s sponsors, with a two month stint at the Bendigo Tourism Centre which proved to be very popular. “Anyone can enter the competition from school students through to the older generation,” Mrs Giffin said. “We find the biggest number of entries come from the students in the Under 21 section. “It has become a regular competition for some of the schools and some of the garments are way out of this world.

LIFT AND SPLIT: A Superaxe ready for work and one of Whitland Engineering’s employees welding a Superaxe component.

Whitlands Engineering clocks up two decades of Australian-made FAMILY owned, country-based farm machinery manufacturer Whitlands Engineering is celebrating its 20th year in business this year. It will build its 3000th firewood handling machine, see six employees go on long service leave and take advantage of exciting export opportunities. These days it specialises in designing and building a range of domestic sized hydraulic wood splitters and industrial ďŹ rewood processing machinery.

However, 20 years ago, it started with one machine, the Superaxe. Chief executive ofďŹ cer and head designer David Burder was chopping 12 tonne of timber for his home heating every season using a hand-held axe. On lamenting another few weeks in the woodshed, he had a go at designing a hydraulic machine to do the job for him. With a background in welding and construction, an eye for good design, and a decent amount of common sense Mr Burder set about designing the ďŹ rst pivoting blade vertical hydraulic wood splitter in the country. At that time, wood splitters were all horizontal and close to the ground meaning, the amount of bending and lifting defeated efďŹ cient splitting. Mr Burder’s design featured a vertical conďŹ guration meaning that the operator could stand up straight while working. An innovative log lifter on the side eliminated even more effort. Trialling the ďŹ rst prototype attracted lots of attention from neighbors and family and it was not long before the ďŹ rst order was in; Superaxe was born.

The business was shaky at ďŹ rst – Mr Burder had little experience running a business and then there was the problem of getting the word out about this great new machine. Looking back it was an almighty risk, especially since the workshop was on the Whitlands family farm in the mountains between MansďŹ eld and WhitďŹ eld, 75 kilometres from Wangaratta. That meant freight, access to power, employees and marketing exposure were all limited. Mr Burder started attending local ďŹ eld days to showcase the machine. Henty, Elmore, Seymour and Tasmania ďŹ eld day attendees were all incredibly receptive to the design and momentum began. Despite no glossy brochures, internet or email, the company steadily built a solid reputation for providing great service and tough machinery. By ďŹ ve years, the business had taken on its ďŹ rst employees: a bookkeeper, a ďŹ eld day representative and three in the workshop. About 15 years on, those ďŹ rst ďŹ ve employees are still with the company. “I had no experience

managing people and never tried to create a positive culture in the workplace, Mr Burder said. “I just tried to treat my employees with respect and understanding. “Plus I found it helpful to always keep a slab of beer in the fridge! As the company grew, the laws around farm safety evolved. In 2009, WorkCover introduced pivotal changes to wood splitter laws and in response, Whitlands Engineering introduced a new range of machines. The Aussie Chopper range set the benchmark for safety, efficiency and ease-of-use and was quickly adopted as the machine of choice for hire and rental companies, arborists and firewood production businesses. Small changes in the Superaxe design further cemented the company as a leader in innovative design. As Asian markets opened, Australian manufacturing made a gradual shift to outsourcing. However, Mr Burder made a decision early on to keep all manufacturing in house and resist the temptation of going offshore. Now the cornerstone

company philosophy, he said it was fundamental to Whitlands’ success, longevity and reputation. “Local manufacturing keeps money in the local economy, supports 20 employees and their families and most importantly keeps integrity in the manufacturing process. “Imported machines may be cheaper but they certainly don’t last very long; to say we are Australian made means more than anything.â€? Whitlands Engineering in 2014 is stronger than ever. There are 21 employees, three brands and more than a dozen different models – all of which are leaders in their product category. Whitlands Engineering has overcome increasing competition from Asian imports, steel prices, drought and the global ďŹ nancial crisis. Every machine is still built from scratch in Whitlands and shipped directly to buyers. As well all machines are grounded in the company philosophy: they are ergonomically enhanced, built to last, productive, safe and efďŹ cient.

SUB-compact tractors are not new but models from $12,990 with true tractor features are an innovation. The true tractor features of the new Mahindra eMax series include full chassis rail, just like 100 horsepower-plus tractors offer, and a proper tractor drawbar, not a ‘lawn mower’ garden hitch like many in this segment The series also features a tier-IV eco-friendly emission engine – great on fuel but with a 25 litre tank for a good day’s work range – three-point linkage standard, solid and easy to operate selflevel, quick-tatch and quick-hitch loader designs, and a drive-over steel-fabricated 60-inch mower deck with 4.5-inch deck lift height.

Many farmers in our Recharge Conditioning Program are getting 8 to 10 years out of their batteries. Just dose them when you buy them, treat them every two years and give them an overnight charge twice a year between treatments and eliminate the sulphation problem.

GERARD Anselmi will be at the Elmore and District Machinery Field Days again this year marketing his battery rejuvenation solutions. Known as Recharge Battery Revitaliser it is available in various pack sizes with the two litre size at $230 the most popular. Online that size pack sells for $380. Capable of treating 80 car batteries or 40 N-70 tractor batteries, Mr Anselmi said the cost of treating an average car battery was about $4. Treatment with Recharge means the liquid dissolves the sulphur ions that form on and degrade battery plates. That enables the electrolyte to hold a charge again. Mr Anselmi said one of his satisfied Queensland customers, Shane Perry, Claremont, had recently returned to buy his third two litre Recharge pack since 2007.

Mr Perry told Mr Anselmi he only bought secondhand batteries but by rejuvenating them with Recharge he was able to get four to six years of life from them; before Recharge their average life

SWARM management and other important tasks of the early part of a beekeeper’s season will be the topic of an introductory workshop on bees and beekeeping held by the North Eastern Apiarists Association on Sunday, October 5 at Swanpool, south of Benalla. Experienced beekeepers from around the North East will be on hand to discuss, demonstrate and encourage learning on all aspects of beekeeping. To be held on the tennis courts at Swanpool, this workshop follows a highly successful workshop held at the same location in October last year that more than 60 people attended. The day will start with a screening of an iconic beekeeping documentary Gentlemen, the Queen. Filmed in 1974 this film features one of the most experienced beekeepers in the North East, Linton Briggs.

Dealing with the production of queen bees, viewing the film today is a fascinating insight into how much and how little things have changed over the past 40 years. Spring is the time for reproduction of the species and for bees this means swarming. Seeing half the residents of their workforce disappearing over the back fence is the last thing any beekeeper wants. There are, however, techniques available to the beekeeper that allow the hive to realise its natural desire to reproduce and at the same time retain the bees for the beekeeper. Interest is already high in this spring workshop and interested beekeepers should register with treasurer Rodney Whitehead at their earliest convenience. Airwell’s water solutions pump life to remote bores PREVIOUSLY unused water sources from low flow bores or bores located remotely from electrical power can now play an important role in farm water supply planning thanks to Airwell Pumps. The Airwell Group Pty Ltd has been providing water pumping solutions to the agriculture industry for over 35 years and has witnessed too many occasions where insufficient planning and attention to farm water supply has created major difficulties and expensive solutions to farming operations. So its technology allows Victorian representative Robert Fishburn to design farm water systems using the most diverse range of pumping products currently available. He will be on the company’s stand at Elmore Field Days to discuss your farm water requirements. Mr Fishburn has been involved in the Victorian agricultural water industry for more than 35 years and has been heavily involved in water designs ranging from small single pump and

tank installations, to very large farm water designs which included multiple pumps and tanks, 28 kilometres of water pipe and 56 troughs. He has the knowledge and experience to recommend the best pumping and that has been recognised by the Department of Environment and Primary Industries. As well, he has been a regular presenter and

speaker at farm water seminars and conferences for the past five years and also delivers water management strategies and design ideas to farmer groups and department staff as part of the Rural Industries Skills Training program. HAY SAVER: A WasteNot Feed Pad feeder in action on a feed pad.

WasteNot tackles bossy cows and PXGGLHG ¿ HOG KD\ THE wetter than usual autumn and winter has made it much more difficult to feed cattle without seriously pugging valuable pastures on flatter farms. But Terry Allan of WasteNot Stockfeeders, at Elmore Field Days again this year, has seen a number of his Feed Pad hay feeders help save the day, particularly on dairy farm feed pads. “With a Feed Pad, cows can be fed after each milking (if that is how you have set it up) to boost their intake and/or to balance their total ration, thus increasing the efficiency of conversion. “When they reach the paddock we see a much gentler

scene: cows are much quieter, grazing or laying down much earlier, rather than charging around the pasture chasing the tractor or today’s hay. “Pasture is eaten out later in the day – even into the afternoon,” Mr Allan said. “If the Feed Pad has been used to help manage the pasture better, hopefully we have grown a little more feed and will utilise a little more of it every paddock, every rotation.” In a year like this, he said it was particularly wasteful to roll out hay or silage for cattle in a wet paddock. “The herd lines up and eats the first half of the hay but watch what

happens to the second half. “A group of cows progressively leave the line although there is still hay there because it is no longer an effective feeding space for tail enders. “The bossy cows dominate the remaining hay, and it is not until they are full and they leave the line that the shy cows and heifers get a chance to come back to where the hay was. “But it’s gone by now – either eaten by the bosses or trampled into the mud,” he said. “Did the tail-enders or the pasture get a fair g o at your place today?” Mr Allan asked. For more information contact Terry Allan on 1800 808 685.

HAY GOES MUCH FURTHER WITH A WASTE-NOT HAY FEEDER s Increase production in your mob using less hay or

sometimes lower quality hay With the cost of hay and silage increasing as the drought season continues a Waste-Not Stockfeeder can ensure that s A Waste-Not Dairy Feed Pad can save up to 2kg of hay per cow per day your hay goes much further. s There is a Waste-Not Stockfeeder to suit your farm s Individual feeding spaces between steel arches act as and any type of bale - small, round, big squares, voluntary head bails so uneaten hay and silage falls back FEL’s full, even feed-wagons in the feeder and there is no trampling on or soiling the hay Hay goes much further with a Waste-Not Stockfeeder s Cattle get all the hay including leaf and grain

Mr Fuller said. “We will be riding on wind trainers, which are a small item that you place under your bicycle so that you can ride without going anywhere. “There will be people around telling the visitors what we are doing and why, and all about the cause. “We really just want to raise awareness of what we are raising money for. “Elmore Field Days is a great local community event where they get a lot of people who utilise the kids’ ward at Bendigo hospital. “So if there is any small way we can contribute and help them, then this is what it is all about,â€? he said. Mr Fuller said he had a fantastic group of people and businesses to help, including Freedom Tanks, his employer, who has given the foundation a small area of their site to use during the Field Days. “ASA Printing Bendigo is printing banners, ags and brochures free of charge for us, Heavenly Threaded are donating shirts for us to wear, AiA Massage Bendigo will keep the riders going and Moroni’s Bikes are donating the wind riders.â€? THE Freedom Tanks’ site at this year’s Elmore Field Days will have a little extra activity about it, with cyclers taking over some of the site to raise awareness for an upcoming fundraising event. Roger and Andrea Fuller have set up a foundation known as “Bays’ Foundation which is named after their son Bailey who passed away in 2012 at the age of 8 as a result of an on-farm drowning accident. “Bailey (Bays) was a very bright and happy boy who loved life and everything to do with it, Mr Fuller said. “Bays had an intellectual disability, so he had no sense of danger but a great sense of adventure. “Some of his passions were bike riding and swimming, which unfortunately contributed to his death. The Bays Foundation is raising funds for the children’s ward at the Bendigo Hospital to purchase chairs that convert to beds for parents to sleep in while their children are in hospital. “Hospitals for kids can be bad enough, but if you are able to stay with your child in some comfort that may make it a little easier. “I can speak from experience, as we have spent many a night there, Mr Fuller said. The foundation’s goal is to raise $20,000 by cycling 404 kilometres from Mildura to Echuca over two days on the second weekend of November. Mr Fuller is heavily involved in Bendigo’s cycling community and had called on many of his friends and more than 20 local businesses to support the fundraiser in what will be known as “Bays’ Ride. To raise awareness for the upcoming fundraiser, the Freedom Tanks site at Elmore Field Days will have a display of bike riders, riding on their bikes on wind trainers continuously from 9am

On-site grassed airstrip welcomes ¿ HOG GD\ YLVLWRUV DEPENDING on the weather, Elmore regularly attracts 40 to 50 fly-in visitors to its three day event. The weather that causes most cancelled fly-in plans is low cloud which eliminates all but instrument rated pilots who can fly solely on the gauges. But high winds are not usually a problem because the grass strips next

to the field days site provide access from four points of the compass. The strip is located at latitude 36° 29.578’ south and longitude 144° 38.709’ west. It is 420 feet ASL and radio contact can be made on frequency 126.7. For information call Wayne Cowan on 0427 326 444.

DAILY DEMO: Mike Fix with his Rehabilitator plough at Elmore Field Days 2013.

GRAHAM Wood, Graham Wood Machinery, and Mike Fix of Fix Engineering will again team up at the Elmore Field Days. They have been partners on imported Austrian, as well as their own Australian built machinery for many years. In the latter category they will release at the field days new seed boxes and seeding systems built by Fix Engineering in Daylesford. One of the Australian imports on display will be the Vertikator, a one pass pasture and small seeds seeding system for over-sowing and re-seeding. It levels, harrows, seeds and rolls at high speed with seed evenly dispersed over the whole surface without drill rows. It will be demonstrated at Elmore each day. The second is the Exaktor seed box, designed for aftermarket attachment to

cultivating equipment to combine two or more operations. Mr Wood is the originator of a third, the Whoppa Choppa cutting and feeding out system for all baled fodder. Also, Fix Engineering has a number of implements for weed management and seeding in the vegetable industry. The most popular is the low power Rehabilitator plough. It provides environmentally friendly tillage with superior lift to allow more air into the soil. Deep and surface cultivation is often achieved in one pass. With a seed box attached crops are sown at the same time. There are pasture options as well for deep and surface aeration without tearing up existing pasture. For more information contact Graham Wood on 0418 591 678 or Mike Fix on 0418 508 573.

TIDY UP: Tow ard Farm’s tow-and-collect pasture cleaner will be on show at the field days.

TOW and Farm will launch its new liquid fertiliser spreader, the Tow and Fert Multi 4000 at this year’s Elmore Field Days. Designed and made by New Zealand-based company Metalform it joins Tow and Farm’s other similar machines, the tow behind Multi 1000 and its three point linkage 1200L model. All machines have similar traits. A stainless steel trash pump, which has the ability to draw water/ effluent from any source on the farm, quickly fills the machine at which time any form of soluble

fertiliser can be added. The 4000 is sold with an onboard crane (optional) making filling quick and easy; with its vigorous in tank agitation, it will dissolve urea in 10 to 15 minutes. This application saves up to 50 per cent of the cost of applied nitrogen. Users can then add any form of fine particle fertiliser that soil or animals require. Once mixed and located in the appropriate paddock, the operator presses remote control to open constant re-circulating booms

(no fertiliser will settle in booms or tank). Then press another button to start spraying and depending on the fertiliser mix the booms will spray a swathe up to 24 metres wide. Tow and Farm’s own computer program sold with the 4000 takes the guess work out of mixing variables and utilising the on board scales. This means accurate mixes can be achieved thus saving money. FAMILY-owned Graden Industries has been designing, manufacturing and assembling turf equipment and mowers in Australia for more than 20 years, and they are now sold all over the world. The company sprang to life in 1986 as an engineering business and has since evolved into the successful business that it is today. In 2000 Graden Industries designed a new mower from the ground up for the Australian market. The Mighty Compak, as it became known, was a zero-turn ride-on mower designed for the tough Australian conditions and it quickly built up a good reputation and continues to sell well in the Australian market. In 2010 the Mighty Compak was redesigned and became the Mark II version. Late last year the company also released its new version Nitro mower for the household gardener. Graden Industries’ Industrial designer and production manager Keith Bainbridge said that being a small, dynamic company enables Graden to bring new products to the market faster than its competitors. “Our ongoing research and development in conjunction with our distributors around the world gives us a real advantage and helps keep us at the forefront of the aeriďŹ cation, rolling and zero-turn mowing industries. “We now have three levels of mowers which have been designed for the different level of users.

“We know what people put their mowers through so we have designed them for different things, especially in Australia where mowers are expected to look after the paddocks and the grass around the house. “A lot of mowers overseas are only designed for the nice house lawns, but in Australia we want ours to do two things,â€? Mr Bainbridge said. He added that the company only make zero turn mowers as they are more efďŹ cient, quicker to use and “a bit of funâ€?. “Our mowers are very light on steering, easy to use and fun to use. “We have been doing this a long time and our products are tried and tested and made for Aussie conditions. “We are also very customer oriented and we listen to the feedback from our great dealer network. “We take on suggestions from our dealers as they get the feedback from their customers. “We really listen to what our customers want and that is why we stand behind our machines and try to react to their needs,â€? Mr Bainbridge said. The Graden factory in Melbourne’s CampbellďŹ eld also builds turf care equipment including scariďŹ ers, verticutters and lawn rollers for sports surfaces which are mainly exported to North America and Europe. The government has committed $50 million over four years to the 20 Million Trees Program with funding having come into effect last month. According to Federal Member for Murray, Sharman Stone the program will be an important part of the National Landcare Program and will deliver real environmental benefits to Murray. “In Murray we have beautiful remnant forest and bushland especially along roadside and water ways, however we need to preserve this so our children and grandchildren can experience them, Dr Stone said. “The scheme will help keep our bushland in good ecological state. “The government is looking for submission from interested organisations or groups of people who can advise how best to deliver large-scale tree planting that utilises industry expertise, knowledge and capacity to engage the community, she said. What you do to manage this is to look to invest in Solar PV. Solar Australia has installed 20 kilowatt to KILOWATT SYSTEMS THAT show a return on investment of 20 per cent or better. This is the means to take control of your electrical costs. Currently, feed-in tariff is minimal, subject to what the Federal Government decides. Wangaratta’s 150th Show to have impressive display of sheep breeds WANGARATTAAgricultural Show Society is again expecting to have an exciting display of sheep breeds, including black and colored and heritage breeds for the 150th Wangaratta Show this October. Simone Lewis has been chief steward for the past six years and instrumental in building up sheep numbers at the show. Breeds which have featured strongly at former shows include the Merino and related breeds, long wool breeds, short wool breeds, shedding breeds and

carpet wool breeds. Merino and related breeds The first sheep imported into Australia in 1797 from South Africa and India, and Spanish Merinos from England were the forebearers of the Australian Merino. Further Merino genetics were imported from Germany and America as well as the French Rambouittet. By the late 1800s three strains of Merino were recognised – the Saxon, the Peppin and the South Australian Merino.

By skilful selection and breeding Australia’s pioneer breeders produced a hardy, versatile sheep which thrives in Australia’s varied climatic conditions and today produces premium quality wool, meat and breeding genetics. Long wool breeds Many of these breeds of sheep are pure breeds which have been in existence for hundreds of years, while others such as the Corriedale, Gromark, Perendale and Coopworth have been developed during the last century. For the woolclasser, however, the

wool of these breeds is termed ‘Crossbred’ and depending on the average fibre diameter, each falls into one of three categories: Fine Crossbred, Medium Crossbred or Course Crossbred. Short wool breeds The short wool, or ‘downs wool’ breeds almost all originated in England with the exception of the Charolais which has its origins in France. From these breeds the Poll Dorset, White Suffolk and Wiltipoll were developed in Australia while the South Suffolk was bred in New Zealand.

Wiltshire Horn and Wiltipoll sheep, while technically ‘shedding breeds’ are traditionally ‘downs wool’ sheep. All these breeds are used primarily for meat. Shedding breeds and carpet wool breeds Shedding breeds, also known as ‘cleanskin sheep’, grow little or no wool and shed their coats naturally each year. Most of these breeds have their origins in Africa and they are growing in popularity with meat producers in Australia due to their hardiness.

Coledale offers best in 12 years for sale COLEDALE Poll Dorset Stud principal Wallace Binnie was weighing up his options for retirement when his daughter motivated him to continue on with his sheep breeding enterprise. Situated at Bungeet, the 385 hectare property is occupied with cattle alongside the Poll Dorset sheep and “a bit of cropping” to feed the stock. Mr Binnie has been breeding Poll Dorsets since 1969 and is about to host the stud’s 12th on-farm sale, with 100 rams, including 10 selected rams up for sale. “We have been performance recording since the inception of Lambplan, with our selection criteria based on that and strict visual appraisal which has enabled us to

improve our indexes plus the standard of our stock over the years,” Mr Binnie said. “This year sees the best drop of rams we have ever had, but you have to be continually improving by about 10 per cent each year or you will be slipping behind.” The stud purchased the second top-priced ram which sold for $9000 at Bendigo’s Poll Dorset championship show and it also won the Lambplan class and was indexed at 207 per cent. Coledale will have progeny from three of its leading sires - Coledale 20/11, 81/10 and Hillcroft Farms 570/10 – all which have high growth rates and are high muscled rams up for sale. “I like to think we have been

Global demand for Aussie beef creates positive outlook A MORE positive outlook for the beef producing industry is expected over the next few months, according to an industry expert. At the recent 2014 North East Beef Conference that focused on better productivity and proďŹ t, Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) chief economist and manager for market information and analysis, Tim McRae, gave a positive

evaluation on global beef industry outlooks and market projections. Mr McRae said MLA’s mid-year update for 2014 cattle industry projections point to a more positive outlook for Australian cattle producers underpinned by a looming shortage of cattle and robust global demand for beef. More than 80 farmers and industry experts attended the conference

which was held at the University of Melbourne’s Dookie Campus. Bill Sykes (MLA, Benalla) said independent studies show that producers are more likely to make positive changes to their enterprises if they learn about industry advancements directly from specialists at events such as this. Mr Sykes said global demand for Victoria’s premium produce, including

terms of the value of agricultural output. “In 2010-11 cattle and calves contributed 30 per cent, or $200 million, to the total gross value of agricultural production in the Hume region, he said. The conference was hosted by the Department of Environment and Primary Industries and GOTAFE, with support from MLA’s ‘More Beef from Pastures’ program.

production of prime lambs. This cross became the most dominant prime lamb mother in Australia, and is to this day. The founder of the stud, the late George Starritt, always maintained that “You would never see a weak headed animal turn out to be a good sire. To reproduce any animal true to type, a good head is essentialâ€?. This policy has always been maintained and is evident in the ock today. George was later to be awarded the OBE for his services to the sheep breeding industry, as was his son, Ray Starritt in 1977. Ray served as both State (Victoria) and federal president of the Australian Society of Breeders of British Sheep. Bruce, like his father, continues the tradition of outstanding service to the industry having been invited to judge at every Australian Royal show, several international shows, and many rural Australian shows. In the period 1920 to 1946,

LAST CHANCE

Kelso had the enviable record of winning the most successful exhibitor award at the Royal Melbourne Show on all but ďŹ ve occasions; and in these ďŹ ve years it was placed second most successful exhibitor. The Starritt family knowledge exists not only with the Border Leicester breed, but with both sheep and cattle breeds in general. These opinions have been well respected by many stud masters. The stud had always been conducted on strict lines with certain objects in view. One of the main goals has been to breed a type of sheep most suitable and proďŹ table for the commercial breeder; a Border Leicester ram to achieve the best results when crossed with a Merino ewe. Their persistence for perfection for 100 years has won the stud the reputation as “the Parent Stud of Australiaâ€?. Apart from sheep being sold to all states of Australia, Kelso ewes and rams have been exported to

South Africa, New Zealand, China and the US. Kelso stud has been recording in Lambplan for over 20 years and ďŹ gures are available on all sheep. Sheep are free to enter all Australian states, selling as MN3 vaccinated; Brucellosis Accredited for over 50 years and foot-rot free. Bruce and Ann Starritt are now looking forward to a new beginning, but they still have a solid footing in the business of breeding Border Leicester sheep. “Over the past years we have been breeding up to purity, which we will now concentrate on for a few of our local, long-time commercial clients,â€? Mr Starritt said. “But to have an interest in our retirement we have decided to keep only the existing Border Leicester – Baroola infused ewes with the high fecundity genetics. “It’s been a great journey and we are looking forward to a new beginning,â€? he said. B/12d11203/36-12

W E L L - K N OW N B o r d e r Leicester stud farm Kelso Park in Tatura is closing its doors as the traditional stud it has become famous for after 100 years. Owners of Kelso Park, Bruce and Ann Starritt, are “semi retiringâ€? and have recently sold off most of the property’s land, only retaining 50 acres that they will use as a hobby farm producing only “a few stud rams to traditional clientsâ€?. And to celebrate the new era for Kelso Park a complete offering of breeding ewes, stud and ock sires will be up for sale at the Kelso Centenary ‘last chance’ sale to be held on Wednesday, October 8 at 12 noon. “We have already sold all the mature ewes, but we will be selling all the young ewes, with all the 2013 drop ewes offered on October 8 and a selection of rams,â€? Mr Starritt said. “There will also be a complimentary lunch available. “After a century of breeding Border Leicesters and selecting true to type, this sale is a once in a lifetime opportunity not to be missed.â€? Kelso Park has been in the Starritt family since 1881. The stud was founded in June, 1914, with the purchase of 10 ewes and one ram from Australia’s original Border Leicester ock of J. A. Cochrane, Geelong. Other sheep were purchased from leading studs from time to time. The greatest subsequent improvement came from rams imported from New Zealand during the decade from the mid-1920s to early 1930s. These rams enabled Kelso to develop sheep with a heavier eece. This type of Border Leicester was needed for crossing with Merino ewes to breed the ďŹ rstcross mothers so valuable for the

Give our readers a quick snapshot of your farm at Goorambat. Our farm is just north of Benalla at Goorambat East and is aptly named Clear Hills. My dad started up a White Suffolk stud in 1989 which has been our main focus for many years. We are also starting up a Charolais sheep stud. We grow wheat and canola as well and we used to run cattle, but have recently gone out of them with a preference towards more sheep and crop. How long have you been a farmer? The farm was founded by my great grandfather and has been in the Hooper family for more than 100 years. I’ve lived on the farm all my life and have always had some involvement in it around school. I studied at Dookie College for two years and came onto the farm full time, eight years ago.

Tell us about your family Haven’t come to the wife and kids part yet. For many years the farm was run in partnership with my grandfather Les, Dad, Robert and Uncle Graeme. It’s since been mostly divided, but we still work in with Graeme and his wife Lauren at times

and share many of the facilities including a very historic old woolshed. I’m currently in partnership with my Mum, Ellen and Dad. Best advice or farming tip you have received? Probably two things. One would be not to put all your eggs into one basket as you

never know what’s going to fail. The other would be to not hold back or cut corners with things, as a lot of the time you need to spend money to make money. Describe your perfect day. Sitting in my boat winding in big cod, yellow belly or trout. What is the best thing about being a farmer? Being your own boss and getting to make all the decisions as well as the lifestyle. What is the worst thing about being a farmer? The unpredictability of markets, weather and the season in general making income difficult to predict. If you could be someone else for a day, who would that be and why? Robson Green from Extreme Fishing because he gets to travel the world and hit up the best fishing spots while he’s at it. You can’t get better than that.

SINCE the establishment of the Bonnydale Simmental Stud in 1974, its focus has always been on maternal excellence. According to the stud’s representative Ian Collie, a successful seed stock business must have a strong maternal foundation. “We believe Bonnydale’s line up of Black Simmental cows and in particular our exceptional donor cows are second to none,” Mr Collie said. “These cows provide the foundation for us to provide quality, breed leading genetics to our clients.” For the commercial cattle man, maternal hybrid vigor has been recognised by the global beef industry for many years as having a strong correlation to overall heard productivity. Mr Collie said he believes the use of Bonnydale Black Simmental and Sim Angus genetics will assist in improving the production performance and profitability of their client’s beef enterprise.

“In times of high feed costs and the ever-increasing need for sustainable agriculture, the importance of understanding the genetic control of feed efficiency cannot be over emphasised. “Hybrid vigor has long been known to boost performance in growth traits, and it is interesting to discover that it may also increase feed efficiency in crossbred animals and in particular in Sim Angus cattle,” he said. Black Simmental and Sim Angus bulls will be up for sale at the stud’s second, on-property sale which will be held on Wednesday, September 24 starting at 1pm. “Bonnydale genetics will deliver product integrity, optimum productivity, with customer service second to none. “Come and discuss your breeding program with us and discover how these bulls could work for you,” Mr Collie said. For more information contact Ian Collie on 0427 329 823.

In brief Ex-NFF boss in new job FORMER president of the National Farmers’ Federation, Duncan Fraser, has been appointed as the new chair of the board of directors of the Cooperative Research Centre for Sheep Industry Innovation (Sheep CRC). Mr Fraser brings to the role more than 20 years of experience with various state, federal and commodity agri-political organisations. The former vice president of the NSW Farmers’ Association owns and manages a 9750 hectare pastoral and irrigation property near Hay, NSW, producing wool, sheep meat, rice and wheat. He said his first priority is to meet with the other board members and the executive team to “learn the internal processes which have ensured that the Sheep CRC as an organisation has been transparent, accountable and effective”.

Hefty fines for those supplying swill Foot and Mouth would cost industry $52 billion pigs or other livestock. “It’s called swill and anyone feeding it to livestock faces a $17,713 fine,” Mr Feldtmann said. But Mr Feldtmann said the fine was a pittance compared to the risk swill feeding poses to Australia’s pig, beef and sheep industries. ABARE estimates an outbreak of the exotic FMD would cost the livestock industry $52 billion and would see Australia’s livestock and meat exports come to a grinding halt. The VFF said that given we export 60 per cent of our livestock, the domestic market would be flooded with meat and prices would collapse. Potentially thousands of livestock on and around infected properties would have to be slaughtered or vaccinated. Stock movements would be restricted and according to the VFF there is no doubt consumers would panic, despite assurances that the meat was safe to eat. VFF pig group president John Bourke said FMD was a nightmare Australian livestock producers never wanted to face. “We can’t afford to close

our eyes to the evidence DEPI’s survey had delivered to the industry,” Mr Bourke said. “Some would say the risk of FMD contaminated meat or dairy product entering Australia and being fed to livestock is minute. “But the improbable came close to the possible when consignments of frozen uncooked meat products from FMD-affected South Korea were found on Australian retailers’ shelves in 2011.” The Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) discovered about 3000 tonnes of illegally imported, uncooked and cooked pork, chicken and beef spring rolls and dim sims had been shipped into Australia from South Korea for at least 12 months. This occurred at a time when South Korea had just gone through another FMD outbreak. The South Korean imports had already been distributed to food outlets before AQIS discovered the breach. “Pigs are the world’s most effective incubator of the FMD virus, spreading it far and wide.

People who feed swill may think it’s cheap but at the end of the day it’s a cost to the industry, and a huge fine to them, it’s just not worth it. “The greatest risk Australia faces is seeing FMD spread into the feral population, where it would be virtually uncontrollable,” Mr Bourke said.

VICTORIAN farmers have welcomed the State Government’s decision to fine food outlets supplying pig owners with food waste containing meat. Fines of up to $53,139 can now be dished out to any business – from restaurants to garbage disposal services – supplying swill to pig producers. Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) livestock president Ian Feldtmann said feeding swill put the entire Australian livestock industry at risk of contracting Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD). Last year a Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) survey of 613 regional Victorian restaurants, hotels and other food outlets found 71 of them supplied their waste to pig owners. Mr Feldtmann said it would only take one of these food outlets to supply some imported out-of-date food waste form an FMDaffected country to a pig producer to put the whole livestock industry at risk. “The risk is that a fair proportion of this food waste contains meat, which cannot be fed to

Designed and made by New Zealand-based company Metalform it joins Tow and Farm’s other similar machines, the tow behind Multi 1000 and its three point linkage 1200L model. All machines have similar traits. A stainless steel trash pump, which has the ability to draw water/effluent from any source on the farm, quickly fills the machine at which time any form of soluble fertiliser can be added. The 4000 is sold with an on-board crane (optional) making filling quick and easy; with its vigorous in tank agitation, it will dissolve urea in 10 to 15 minutes. This application saves up to 50 per cent of the cost of applied nitrogen.

Users can then add any form of fine particle fertiliser that soil or animals require. Once mixed and located in the appropriate paddock, the operator presses remote control to open constant re-circulating booms (no fertiliser will settle in booms or tank). Then press another button to start spraying and depending on the

fertiliser mix the booms will spray a swathe up to 24 metres wide. Tow and Farm’s own computer program sold with the 4000 takes the guess work out of mixing variables and utilising the on board scales. This means accurate mixes can be achieved thus saving money. FIELD DAYS CHAIRMAN: Ross Edwards said Henty Field Days will always be about providing farmers with innovative ideas.

ian communities and will play a pre-eminent role in the future of the nation’s agricultural industry. “We need to ensure our regional communities, both large and small, thrive both economically and socially. “Critical to this is fostering and developing a skill base among our youth choosing to make agriculture their career. “They will be the ones ensuring Australia prospers and had a sustainable future as we head toward 2050,” he said. The field days will be officially opened by National Farmers Federation president Brent Finlay. Machines at the cut-

ting edge of tillage, load handling and spraying technology will be showcased in the prestigious Henty Machine of theYear Award. The Country Lifestyle pavilion will be packed with more than 70 exhibitors, arts, crafts, fashion and a full program of speakers and guest demonstrators. Designers with a flair for converting natural fibres into wearable art will compete for $3500 worth of prizes. The extra tent will feature exhibitors displaying a range of medical, clothing, education and household products. Cooking demonstra-

tions and talks by celebrity presenters, including the Bondi boys Luke Hines and Scott Gooding of My Kitchen Rules and Beechworth Baker Tom O’Toole, will take place in the Farm Gate Market Produce Area. The competition is expected to be intense this year as the nation’s best sheep dogs and their handlers gather for the Pedigree Sheep and Yard Dog Trials. Natural horsemanship demonstrations will be given daily by profes-

sional Parelli instructors during the lunch break at the sheep and yard dog trials. Visitors will be able to take a helicopter joyflight with Wagga Air Centre pilot Chris Cabot. Always drawing a large crowd, the display by the Henty and District Antique Farm Machinery club members is to focus on farm machinery powered by the engines made famous by British manufacturer, Perkins. For the first time, visitors can pre-purchase tickets on-line and become VIP members of the Henty Machinery Field Days. Tickets are $20 for an adult, $5 for children between the ages of 12 to 18 or $40 for a family (two adults and two children under 12). Children under 12 are free when accompanied by an adult. Gates are open from 8am to 5pm daily. Mr Edwards said the Henty team would continue to liaise with their exhibitors to advance the

field days to satisfy their future needs and requirements. “We are indebted to all our major sponsors for their support, and to our staff for their commitment and dedication to ensure the success of the field days,” Mr Edwards said.

“Henty will always be about providing farmers with innovative ideas and ways to meet the numerous challenges, so join us to explore agriculture for the next 50 years and beyond,” he said. For more information visit www.hmfd.com.au.

Battery Revitalizer & Conditioner Many farmers in our Recharge Conditioning Program are getting 8 to 10 years out of their batteries. Just dose them when you buy them, treat them every two years and give them an overnight charge twice a year between treatments and eliminate the sulphation problem.

THIS year’s 51st annual Henty Machinery Field Days is expected to draw a crowd of 60,000, with a full house of exhibitors ready to display their products in what is now the single, largest agricultural and open-air event in southern Australia. The popular event, which runs from Tuesday, September 23 to Thursday, September 25, is maintaining its focus on agriculture and machinery and will this year focus on the next 50 years in agriculture and what technological changes farmers will face. Henty Machinery Field Days chairman Ross Edwards said the challenge for Australian farmers for the next 50 years is to focus on farming smarter, not harder. “It will also be about dealing with the practical challenges of climate change and extreme weather events, changing consumer habits and rising input costs,” Mr Edwards said. “This is compounded by increasing urbanisation, mining, water use and population growth. “We believe the family farm remains the backbone of regional Austral-

Recharge your battery for longer at Henty Field Days SULPHATION is a major problem with lead-acid batteries and the less they’re used the worse it is. This is a well-known fact and an issue that Gerard Anselmi of Recharge has managed to successfully address. “All batteries sulphate, said Mr Anselmi . “You buy them with sulphation and they only get

worse till they die. “But with what we do to the batteries, we get farmers at most ďŹ eld days with 12 and 14 year old batteries still going strong. “Our record to date is 17 years - a South Island farmer emailed me last year with a 1996 Fiat tractor with the original battery still going strong,â€? he said. What Recharge does

is apply its conditioning treatment that dissolves the sulphation build-up back into the electrolyte to effectively re-acid the battery to full charge, holding capacity and stop corrosion of lead plates. “A lot of farmers in our Recharge Conditioning Program are getting 8 to 10 years from most batteries and sometimes a lot more.

“Simply dose them early, treat every two to three years and keep them charged. “Once the lead has collapsed, it is too late, so treat them early, Mr Anselmi said. Recharge will be at Henty Machinery Field Days again this year and can be found at Site 1011, and as their product is no longer available from CRT,

purchasing at ďŹ eld days is ideal. “The 500ml farmer pack works out at $4 per car battery or $7 to treat an N-70. “Or a more cost effective two litre commercial pack is also available and can also be purchased on line at www.recharge.net.nz or on EBay. As Recharge is acid based

it is dangerous goods and expensive to freight. “The two-litre bottle is, therefore, the only one that we sell directly and it is far cheaper at the ďŹ eld days at $245 and that treats 42 x N-70 batteries or 22 x N-150 truck batteries and that pack is $380 on line. “And yes, you can treat sealed batteries,â€? Mr Anselmi said.

TEA FOR TWO: Marcus Oldham Agribusiness students visiting the Tea Terraces near Ya’an during their study tour in China

Marcus Oldham has global view of ag education

T/12D10512-V2/36-14

ACCORDING to agricultural educators at Marcus Oldham College the future of farming is and will continue to be a complex business and the leading producers of the future will be those at the forefront of technologies who can analyse, adopt and implement the latest scientiďŹ c practices into their food production systems. Marcus Oldham College marketing ofďŹ cer Janet Craigie-McConnell said the productivity growth is central to the performance and international competitiveness of Australia’s rural sector. “High performing agricultural managers need to make complex decisions and be able to proďŹ t during challenging times,â€? she said. “Many skills can be learnt on the job, but the development of the high level cognitive thinking needed for sophisticated management decision making is best learnt

off farm in a tertiary setting.â€? Marcus Oldham College in Geelong delivers on-campus a Bachelor of Business (Agriculture) and a Bachelor or Business (Agribusiness). Both programs have nested qualiďŹ cations. The college also offers its popular one-year Diploma of Equine Management which offers many opportunities for local and international career paths. “For people planning to upgrade their qualiďŹ cations by combining employment and study, the offcampus postgraduate program has a good range of elective units to complement the core units,â€? Ms Craigie-McConnell said. The courses at Marcus Oldham include local, interstate and international study tours, with wide-ranging beneďŹ ts on many levels. Students who study agriculture and

agribusiness visit China where they gain an understanding of international trade and marketing, processing of Australian products, exposure to the culture and business focus of Australia’s major trading partner and opportunities for entrepreneurial business ventures. All students visit New Zealand at different times and the equine management students have a threeweek work experience option in New Zealand also. “The ďŹ rst-hand industry knowledge, production and business management skills acquired at Marcus Oldham is attractive to employers, thereby opening a world of exciting careers and global opportunities for graduates,â€? Ms Craigie-McConnell said. For more information contact Marcus Oldham College on (03) 5247 2926.

BEEKEEPERS across North East Victoria are eagerly anticipating a busy season ahead. North Easter Apiarists’ Association treasurer, Rodney Whitehead said the lead up to spring has been encouraging with good rains over the winter. “Improved conditions for plant growth will hopefully be reflected in the capacity of both ground flora and eucalyptus to yield pollen and nectar in both quality and quantity,” he said. But Mr Whitehead said a promising season brings with it some special challenges for beekeepers. “Spring is the time for reproduction of the species and for bees this means swarming. “Seeing half the residents of their workforce disappearing over the back fence is the last thing any beekeeper wants. “There are, however, techniques available to the beekeeper that allow the hive to realise its natural desire to reproduce and at the same time retain the bees for the beekeeper,” Mr Whitehead said. Swarm management and other important tasks of the early part of the season will be the topic of an introductory workshop on bees and beekeeping the North Eastern Apiarists Association will hold at Swanpool on Sunday, October 5. Mr Whitehead said experienced beekeepers from around the North East will be on hand to discuss, demonstrate and encourage learning on all aspects of beekeeping.

ALL ABOUT BEES: Local apiarist Rodney Whitehead (above) is encouraging people to come along to the October workshop at Swanpool.

The workshop will be held at the tennis courts at Swanpool, and follows a highly successful workshop at the same location last year that had more than 60 people in attendance. The day will commence with the screening of an iconic beekeeping documentary, ‘Gentlemen, the Queen’. Filmed in 1974, this film features one of the most experienced beekeepers in the North East, Linton

Briggs of Glenrowan. “Dealing with the production of queen bees, viewing the film today is a fascinating insight into how much and how little things have changed over the past 40 years,” Mr Whitehead said. Interest is already high in this spring workshop and interested beekeepers should register with Mr Whitehead on (03) 5727 3468 or at walkabouthoney@westnet.com.au.

We will start to come into the warmer months shortly, and will see pinkeye cases as the flies make their appearance known again. Pinkeye is a bacterial infection of the eye that causes inflammation, ulceration, and blindness in severe cases. The bacterium produces a toxin that damages the corneal surface of the eye. Predisposing factors can include dusty conditions, cattle yarded together, flies, bright sunlight and trauma to the eye from grass seeds etc. Flies are attracted to weepy/tearing eyes, and can spread the disease quickly within a mob. Infection causes lost production, young cattle can lose up to 10% of their body weight if affected by pinkeye. Severe infections untreated can lead to blindness in the affected eyes. There is a vaccine available to help reduce the
