From little things, big things grow North East residents respond to calls for drought assistance Ű

By RHYLL MCCORMACK

LITTLE PEOPLE, BIG HEARTS: Charlotte and Molly Purcell have already travelled thousands of kilometres with their parents, visiting farmers in drought affected New South Wales. This month they will return, bringing with them care packages, stock feed and – most importantly – hope. The story continues on page 8 of this month’s North East and Goulburn Murray Farmer.

THE rain began to drum gently on the roof of the Purcell family home. Clouds had been gathering all day, dark and foreboding, DQG o QDOO\ WKH WLQQ\ UDWWOH RI corrugated iron was proof the storm was due to break. Four-year-old Charlotte Purcell is the youngest in her family; like many country kids her age, she likes the outdoors, baby lambs and Barbie dolls. Unlike many her age, she is acutely aware that Australian farmers are doing it tough. So, with the rain beginning to pour down outside her Maindample home, Charlotte grabbed her Frozen-inspired bucket and dashed outside. “I’m collecting rain

Mummy,” she called back into the house. “I’m going to give it to farm kids whose animals are dying – maybe they can make some grass grow with it.” Working away in the kitchen, an idea formed in Tanya Purcell’s mind. Why not take her daughters Charlotte, and nineyear-old Molly, and let them see what was happening in New South Wales? There is no experience like WKDW OHDUQHG o UVW KDQG So, inspired by her daughter’s kind heart, the Purcell family packed up their camper and headed north – and although they didn’t take the bucket of rain, they brought with them hope and compassion. “Instead of donating online, like we normally do, we

decided it would be better for WKH JLUOV WR VHH o UVW KDQG ZK\ we need to help the farmers,” Tanya explained. “If a four-year-old can raid her piggy bank to help, imagine what we could all do. “We need our farmers and right now, our farmers need us.” Travelling thousands of kilometres, visiting farmers and local towns, it was the trip of a lifetime; tainted with sadness at the hardships endured, but also with faith that, eventually, the season will break. Back home again in North East Victoria, the Purcells have collected donations for those they met along the way. DVDs, popcorn and lollies for a family who need a movie night.

Covering North East Victoria, Southern New South Wales and Goulburn Murray Valleys

OVER the last few months, the North East and Goublurn Valley Farmer has been keeping tabs on the Ogden family from Wanalta. Firstly, we covered their generous donation of 10 Dorset lambs, sold at Bendigo at Easter – making $500 a head – with all monies donated to the Royal Children’s Hospital. Then there was their Shearing for Kids – a whole day event where 11 shearers took to the family’s eight stand shearing shed, and across a mammoth day raised an astounding $53,620 to the cause. But most recently, and in recognition of their on-going fundraising efforts despite a tough season, Kat and Billy Ogden were invited to appear as special guests on The Footy Show. Coinciding with The Footy Show telethon in early August, the Ogdens presented their cheque on live television – their recently shaved heads testament to their community spirit. “It was amazing, to be invited down, Kat said. “But the event itself (Shearing for Kids) was mind boggling – if it wasn’t for the businesses and the local community coming together, it just would not have been possible. “On the day we have more than 40 people helping out – someone even brought a petting zoo and a jumping castle. Despite the lack of rain, the cold winter and trying conditions, the Ogdens keep proving that community spirit never dies – and that there will always be someone going above and beyond for the greater good.

Spring lamb sales open $50 dearer LAMB prices have smashed records across the state – and it may just be the saving grace for farmers doing it tough in New South Wales. Livestock agent Alex Collins works with McKean McGregor out of Bendigo, servicing southern Victoria and into New South Wales. Although he was extremely sympathetic to those in drought affected areas, Mr Collins said an “approaching average season in Victoria might mean sustained prices for interstate store stock.

“Victoria is having an ok season, so they’ll be able to keep demand for (interstate) store stock reasonably strong – that could work out well for those in New South, he said. 7KH o UVW RI WKH VSULQJ ODPE sales was brought forward by a month due to seasonal conditions, kicking off in Hay on August 10 where pens “sold above expectation, Mr Collins said. Some 15,000 sheep were penned for the sale, with prices $30 - $50 dearer than predicted. Interstate competition

drove demand, with the top price of $202 paid for 482 Dohne Merino ewes, May/ June 2017 drop and November shorn. Mr Collins said it was a promising start to the season. “There’s been an increase of store stock on the market through NSW, and we’ve seen early weaning - with a lot of lambs on the market, both online and physical markets – there’s certainly been an increase in numbers coming south where the conditions are better, he said.

Mr Collins predicts more QHZ VHDVRQ ODPEV ZRXOG o QG themselves on the market this month, saying “I think we will be well rewarded for them due to the lack of prime lambs. “The physical market and over the hooks is very strong – it might just soften a little bit due to numbers over the next few weeks, but it’s still going to be at high levels, he said. Cattle sales are held each Tuesday out of Bendigo, with the mid-August market see-

“Southern Victoria is starting to dry out and grow a bit of grass now - but until we see a rain in the north, cattle prices will probably stay depressed for the time being. “Light store stock are good value for anyone that can handle them. Mr Collins predicts cattle will follow a similar trend to the lamb market, saying heavy prime stock would continue to sell at acceptable levels but that “store stock is hard enough to shift.

Pumpkin seed business eyeing Do you have them? two top awards Don’t know? THE Australian Pumpkin Seed Company has reached the semi-finals of both the Prime Super Agricultural Innovation Award and the Regional Development Victoria Business Achievement Award. Recognition in the two prestigious awards is just a small token for the huge expansion the Ovens-based business has undergone. Over the last 10 years Sharan and Jay Rivett have successfully transformed the business from small scale pumpkin farming to the largest grower of pumpkins for their seed in Australia. Their farm shop and factory where visitors can view, taste and learn all about the

processing of the special variety Styrian pumpkin seed from ‘paddock to plate’ has been extremely popular. The business now has over 350 stockists across Australia and 50 major food manufacturing contracts that supply restaurants, muesli bar makers and the pharmaceutical and sports nutrition industries. The business employs 16 staff members and is proud of using local labourers, trades and resources when acquiring new farms. Ms Rivett said the business’s intention has always been to inspire healthy eating choices made affordable and tasty. “By focusing on the best

quality ingredients we have become a fledgling industry that is punching well above its weight,” she said. “Job creation, new industry and bringing delicious Australian grown food to plates across the country would be our highlight.” The company’s business growth has followed their set vision with a 200 per cent rise across the product range in 2017/18. The next round of judging, which determines the finalists of the Prime Super Agricultural Innovation Award, took place late last month. Winners will be printed in the next edition of the Farmer.

WINNER: Maygar’s Hill, a tiny winery near Euroa, is owned and operated by Jenny Houghton.

“THIS isolated vineyard is one of the jewels of the Strathbogie Ranges.” High praise from Australia’s most esteemed wine critic, but that is exactly what James Halliday said in his 2018 review of Maygar’s Hill. Tucked away among imposing granite rocks, Maygar’s Hill lacks the pomp and fanfare associated with Victoria’s big vineyards. There are no backlit gum trees, no oxidised metal signs and certainly no lavish accommodation suites. Instead, Maygar’s is a small player on a big stage – but, if Halliday’s review is anything to go by, one with an increasingly loud voice. “There’s a strong following for the Wine Companion reviews,” Jenny Houghton, who owns and operates Maygar’s, explained. “For a small winery, getting a positive score can make a big difference – if you do well, emails with orders will arrive the same day the book is released.” The Maygar’s Hill Reserve Shiraz scored 96 out of a possible 100 points in the 2018 Wine Companion, noting; “there is an urgency, a freshness to the expression of the Shiraz, and new oak has been easily absorbed on the long palate”. Just what an urgent wine tastes like is open to interpretation, but Jenny certainly isn’t complaining. “That kind of review recognises what’s happening here, so it’s really important,” she said. 0RYLQJ IURP 3HUWK \HDUV DJR WR p \ KRW air balloons, Jenny planted grape cuttings originally to supplement their income. “I put them in with the thought of selling the fruit – at that time, grapes were taking a premium,” she said. It was the early 1990s, and everyone with a small piece of land was doing the same – dreaming of evenings spent watching the sun go down, sipping homemade chardonnay.

jewel in the Strathbogie Ranges It was a boom decade for growers - the number of hectares planted to grapes across Australia doubled from 1996 to 2000. The ensuing market glut, and plummeting wholesale prices, saw many opt out of their weekend dreams. Not so Ms Houghton. -HQQ\ ZRUNHG WLUHOHVVO\ WKURXJK WKH p XF tuations, deciding early to be in command of their product from pruning to bottling. “I did the numbers and decided better to make it ourselves – focused on Cabernet and Shiraz varieties and are all estate produced, she said. Maygar’s Hill is named after the landscape it snuggles against – in turn named after Leslie Maygar, one of three of Strathbogie Shire’s Victoria Cross (VC) recipients. Leslie was awarded the VC for rescuing a IDOOHQ VROGLHU ZKLOH XQGHU ULp H o UH GXULQJ WKH Second Boer War; he later served at Gallipoli, and died of wounds received at the Battle of Beersheba. His history is celebrated annually at Maygar’s Hill with the Bersheeba Dinner. “Many people are attracted to us because of the history – particularly with the centenary this year, there are a lot fascinated by the Victoria Cross, Jenny said. “Euroa (the closest town to Maygar’s Hill) has three life-size statues dedicated to its war heroes, and Leslie is one of them. Maygar’s Hill produces between 12 – 20 tonnes a season, depending on conditions, which equates to an average 900 cases. The 200m elevation of the property, light, sandy soils and position at the foothills of the ranges all help provide ideal growing conditions. Using a drip irrigation system, fed from both dam and bore, Jenny prefers to make the vines “anxious as opposed to “stressing them like many vineyards. “The vines have been hand planted from cuttings and deliver, small intense berries that produce wine of great colour and intensity, she said. Although Maygar’s Hill has no intention of DSSO\LQJ IRU RUJDQLF FHUWLo FDWLRQ -HQQ\ UXQV a primarily natural system – occasionally spraying sulphur when required. In dry years, Jenny will hand prune each vine before fruit set, cutting from four to two buds to allow the plants to produce more using less water. “Because we are small, we can be nimble – if I need to take off fruit, I will – it’s that personal care I offer the vines that makes the difference, she said. Harvest is done primarily by Jenny herself, with friends invited along for a “pick and picnic day if the season is light. When produce tonnage is likely to be great, Jenny brings in professional pickers – steering away from backpackers because “they are lovely people, but a little too social. Despite the accolade from Halliday for the 2016 vintage, Jenny can’t wait to open a 2018 bottle – certain it will be Maygar’s crowning glory.

ODE TO A HERO: Maygar’s Hill sits nestled into the side of a mountain named after Leslie Maygar, one of three Strathbogie Shire Victoria Cross (VC) recipients. Leslie was awarded the VC for rescuing a fallen soldier while under rifle fire during the Second Boer War; he later served at Gallipoli, and died of wounds received at the Battle of Beersheba. TASTE OF SUCCESS: Maygar’s Hill has been awarded 96 out of a possible 100 points for the Reserve Shiraz in the latest James Halliday Wine Companion.

“They say it takes 20 years of growing to get the right Shiraz – in 2018 we got the right amount of rain at the right time; it wasn’t HQRXJK WR o OO GDPV EXW LW ZDV SHUIHFW IRU WKH season, she said. “All the numbers just seemed to come in – the right amount of rain, the right soil, the right sunlight hours. “2018 is the bottle I can’t wait for. Although competing against vineyards with thousands of acres under production, Maygar’s Hill continues to make a big impact with its little vintage. But perhaps the biggest advantage of the success has been the sheer enjoyment of owning a vineyard – of watching it grow, ripen, and eventually, in sharing the fruits of labour with friends and family. “Lots of people talk about wanting to start a vineyard, because it’s a very romantic image – everyone sitting around the table at harvest time enjoying platters and wine, Jenny said. “There is a lot of work – hard work – to get to that stage; but I’m lucky enough to be there now.

From food collection dropoffs to charity balls, tin rattles to dress up days - people want to help. In Wangaratta there was a ball, school fundraisers and lots of community groups pitching in. Out in Oxley, children came GUHVVHG LQ MHDQV DQG p DQQHO ette in honour of those living in the drought – raising more than $500 for their efforts. The call to action has been wide and varied, but there can be no denying that the North East is doing what it can to help drought stricken parts of the country – even right down to a little four year old with a very big heart.

Top dog going for Aussie job glory FLY the Kelpie has spent the last few weeks working his paws off. From tracking sheep to pushing up in the yard, Fly has been doing his best to be named the 2018 Cobber Challenge, which is for the grand title of Australia’s working dog. Fly, who is proudly owned by Ben Harrison from Longwood, wore a GPS collar over three weeks – from mid-August to the start of this month - to record his daily distance, speed and duration. Mr Harrison and Fly work for The

Falls Pastoral, and was one of two teams representing Victoria during this year’s challenge. Mr Harrison purchased Fly just over 12 months ago, and has been incredibly impressed with him since. This is the ďŹ rst time Mr Harrison has entered the competition, but he is hoping that with Fly’s natural ability and work ethic the prize for top spot isn’t unrealistic. Results will be announced this month.

THE number of cattle on feed has set a new Australian record with 1.12 million head at the end of the June 2018 quarter, nine per cent more than the preceding period, new statistics from Meat and Livestock Australia prove. Grain fed beef exports over the aforementioned period achieved a new high of 74,932 tonnes shipped weight (swt), up 10 per cent from the same period last year - and the impact of record numbers of cattle on feed has been further reected in the latest export ďŹ gures as grain fed exports in July totalled 28,145 tonnes swt – the largest month on record. Deteriorating seasonal conditions throughout the June quarter contributed to feedlot cattle inventory reaching the record level, despite demand for feed grain rising and prices trending signiďŹ cantly higher. Wheat ex-Darling Downs averaged $381/tonne, while barley averaged $383/tonne, an increase of 48 per cent and 58 per cent year-on-year respectively. During the June quarter, feeder buyers accounted for 44 per cent of EYCI eligible cattle, a modest decline from the March quarter as op-

portunistic re-stockers, with feed on hand, took advantage of falling young cattle prices. The domestic feeder steer indicator throughout the June quarter averaged 278.14¢/kg lwt – representing a seven per cent decline from the March quarter. Elevated demand and higher prices for grain will continue to pressure lot feeders, as will the ability to source suitable entry weight cattle.

The average weight of EYCI eligible cattle purchased by feeder buyers in the June quarter was 360kg, a drop of 14kg on the previous quarter. Overall, the feedlot sector continues to support Australian beef production - as challenging conditions hamper large parts of the country - evidenced with feedlots at 86 per cent utilisation and a record number of cattle on feed.

Research shows PMR is worthy BY DR MARTIN AULDIST

Senior Research Scientist, Agriculture Victoria, Ellinbank

AGRICULTURE Victoria researchers at Ellinbank recently hosted a two-day workshop for dairy industry service providers. Around 20 representatives from feed and milk companies and Dairy Australia’s regional development programs attended the invitation-only event to hear researchers present an extended summary of nearly a decade’s work into the use of partial mixed rations (PMR) in pasture-based dairy systems. The workshop generated a lot of interest among those present, so I thought I would summarise the key messages from the workshop in this month’s column. The series of 11 grazing experiments commenced in 2009 and were interspersed with several shorter studies using metabolism stalls. All were conducted as part of the ‘Flexible Feeding Systems’ research program, which concluded in 2015. The program, led by Dr Bill Wales, had its origins in the fact that in 2009 the industry had just come through 10 years of below average rainfall and the use of pur-

z Adding canola meal to the PMR led to increased intakes of both pasture and supplement: this was a primary factor behind the observed increases in milk solids yield. z Adding canola to the PMR increased cows’ inclination to graze. z Feeding the main components of the PMR through existing infrastructure in the farm dairy allowed between 75 and 100 per cent of the PLON SURGXFWLRQ EHQHo WV to be captured without the need for a feed pad or mixer wagon. Overall, the work generated a large volume of detailed information useful to farmers interested in optimising the use of existing feeding infrastructure or those considering establishing PMR systems on their farms, whether by choice or necessity. The research results have been thoroughly analysed by Agriculture Victoria farm systems economist Dr &KULVWLH +R ZKR FRQFOXGHG that despite the high capital cost of PMR systems, they can be profitable when well managed and milk responses similar to those measured in the Flexible Feeding Systems research can be achieved. $525,000 in grants available for nationwide groups

THE Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal (FRRR) is offering more than $525,000 for grants to rural, regional and remote communities to address local community priorities. Generous support from more than 15 partners means community groups nationwide will be able to apply for up to $5000 to support projects that strengthen their community. Priority will be given to

Another area that will receive more focus is health and wellbeing, thanks to the John T Reid Charitable Trusts. A long-term partner, this year FRRR was the recipient of a 60th anniversary grant to help improve health and

GOING GUNG HO: Sas Allardice (left) and Mel Willard make up Gung Hoe Growers, the first to approach Mt Alexander about leasing land for an organic vegetable business.

Going Gung Hoe Name: We are Gung Hoe Growers: Sas Allardice and Mel Willard. How did you come to be involved with HOFA? We have been farming with leased land from Katie and Hugh for three years, this creation of HOFA will see us into our fourth (we measure time by garlic plantings). What are you farming? Gung Hoe Growers is a small scale organic (almost certified) market garden. We grow soil, belly laughs, veggie porn and a large assortment of annual and perennial vegetables, fruit, herbs and edible flowers. Biggest challenge in setting up the co-op? Speaking as one half - I’d say it’s making HOFA conversations a priority as when you are already farming your own business, sometimes meetings to nut it all out seem hard to make time for. What do you hope to achieve over the next 12 months? To have more members in the collective, continue the beautiful culture we’ve already started to grow here and be fully productive on a small piece of the land. Contact details: Facebook is the best way to get a hold of us and see what we’re doing plus instagram - gunghoegrowers and email gunghoegrowers@gmail.com.

NEW WAY TO FARM: Katie and Hugh Finlay have pioneered the first organic share-farm, where four individual producers have signed on to lease parts of their farm – including an orchardist, vegetable growers, a micro dairy and a heritage nursery. The Finlays hope that, over time, even more farmers will become involved in the co-op. Read the story below and then turn to pages two and three. PHOTO: David White

How did you come to be involved with HOFA? I first heard about the co-op at a knowledgesharing event for small to medium scale regenerative farmers called ‘Deep Winter Agrarians’. About a year later I formally expressed interest and after a few meetings, Hugh and Katie offered me the orchard lease. What are you farming? Organic stome and stone fruit (apples, cherries, apricots, peaches etc). Biggest challenge in setting up the co-op? Maintaining good relationships and having clear expectations. Regular communication and empathy is key to understanding everyone else’s perspectives and finding the right path forward together. What do you hope to achieve over the next 12 months? I hope to offer CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) shares soon, maybe with a bit of an experimental element. I’d like to integrate poultry into the orchard asap and look forward to working out how our different farming enterprises can work together - we are already trialling Tess’ dairy cows in the orchard. y the end of this month, Mount Alexander Fruit Gardens will herald in a new era of farming. Katie and Hugh Finlay will step back from being orchardists, instead earning part of their income from their land as it is farmed cooperatively by different businesses. Together, the team will become known as the Harcourt Organic Farming Alliance (HOFA). It is a novel idea, and one that is very much in its infancy; plenty of details still need to be thrashed out, including power usage, water rights, infrastructure maintenance costs to name a few. But the idea behind HOFA is as romantic as it is practical; complimentary farming for individual products. The Mount Alexander Fruit Garden, just out of Harcourt, sits on 60 hectares of granite loam soil. The property has been in Katie’s family for almost 50 years, with 6000 mature apple, peach, pear, cherry and nectarine trees - as well as a self-supplying tree nursery. With an average rainfall of 450mm, the 2018 season is tracking well for sub-soil moisture, which will work with their ongoing soil improvement program to help promote healthy microbial activity. It has also proven to be the perfect time for the Finlays to take a step back – the culmination of

This is where the pair hit the oUVW URDG EORFN “It’s a common story among farmers our age; we’re not getting any younger, and while we wanted to take a less active role in the orchard, we also wanted it to stay in production, Katie said. Back in 2015, Katie and Hugh were approached by a local team looking to rent land for a market garden. The Gung Hoe Growers have now become part of the property landscape – but they planted more than just vegetables. “We had this great experience working with Gung Hoe – which led us to think maybe we could lease out parts of the farm and still have an interest in it - but not so much of the back-breaking work. Not long after, the Finlays were approached by Tess Sellar – who wanted to establish a 10 cow micro-dairy, but had no equity to buy her own land. “That was enough to kick us into action, to make us chase this new idea, Katie said. The next step was deciding

to look for someone to lease the orchard. The process: 7R oQG WKH ULJKW SHUVRQ .DWLH and Hugh undertook an extensive social media campaign, ran webinars and contacted local farming groups. They found the right person in Ant Wilson, and offered him a traineeship to help learn the skills he needed to take on the orchard.

The same program has since provided a further $45,000 – to be matched by the co-op farmers – for building infrastructure. “Collaborative farming is a bit of a buzz word at the moment, Katie said. “We just happened to come along at the right time, and so there has been a lot of support and help made available to us. Lease documents, which should all be signed by the end of this month, are for three years with two three year options for

HOFA members will also have the opportunity to farm land, without paying to enter the real estate market. “One of the biggest obstacles faced by next generation farmers is how to start, Katie said. “Unless you have family with land, it is almost impossible to gather the equity required.

How did you come to be involved with HOFA? I moved to the area five years ago to intern and work at a local, organic goat dairy and cheese farm. I met Katie and Hugh shortly after arriving. Two years ago I started looking for land to take the big leap and start my own dairy. It was at a food hubs conference in Bendigo, where Katie stood up saying she was looking for young farmers to come and farm with them. I sent her a text that night. What are you farming? I’m slowly building up my micro dairy. Currently I’m running four cows and two future milking calves with the plan to run a herd of 10 milkers. With on-site processing for fresh milk, yogurt and butter to the local Castlemaine markets. We’re currently busy trying to get the factory finished and licensed so we can start selling and building the herd. Biggest challenge in setting up the co-op? So far so good, but we are all very aware that our internal relationships are the biggest challenge. Clear communications, expectations, managing emotions. We’re working on systems to put in place now for when issues arise in the future. What do you hope to achieve over the next 12 months? Finish the factory, start selling and sharing our product, always building resilient soils, animals and community. Contact details: www.sellardairy.com.au.

KEEPING IT IN THE FAMILY: Katie Finlay and Sas Allardice (pictured far right and left) are running Carr’s Organic Fruit Tree Nursery, using the decades of knowledge passed down from Katie’s father Merv (centre).

Heritage nursery Names: Katie Finlay and Sas Allardice. How did you come to be involved with HOFA? We were both already involved with the farm in other ways - Sas in Gung Hoe Growers, Katie as one of the owners. We decided to start the fruit tree nursery just for fun really, and to learn some new skills. Plus it’s a side income, and it’s a great way for me (Katie) to still have a “hands-on role as a farmer now that Ant is leasing the orchard. What are you farming? We’re growing deciduous fruit trees from scratch, ie first we grow our own rootstocks from seed or cuttings, and then we graft scions onto the rootstock to make the trees. We’re in a great position to do that because Merv (Merv Carr, Katie’s Dad, who the nursery is named for) is here every week to teach and mentor us, plus we have more than 140 varieties of fruit on the farm already, so we have a good source of scion wood on hand. Biggest challenge in setting up the co-op? It’s been pretty easy for the nursery because it’s such a simple business, but we’re hoping the co-op will bring us benefits with marketing and cost-saving, so trying to understand how to set those systems up has been the hardest thing so far. What do you hope to achieve over the next 12 months? We are planning to have our first selling season next winter, so we’re hoping this summer is really successful in the nursery. We started working on the trees last year, so we’ve got some really interesting multi-grafts coming through (ie multiple varieties on the same tree) that should be ready for sale next June. Boer goats a goer at Whittlesea Show As superintendent of the Boer goat section, Joe said he wanted the show to be a friendly social day of competition among new and experienced breeders - a day for the public to see some amazing animals and source information about Boer goat meat and breeding. Berwyn Squire at Agriculture Victoria will also be there to answer any questions about goat health, welfare and NLIS tagging. There will also be an opportunity to get hands on with some goats at the kids’ corner – pun intended. So get along to the 2018 Whittlesea Show, where you can access all the latest information about Boer goats while revelling in the atmosphere of a classic country show, with kids’ rides, live displays and everything in between.

BOER Goats Australia (BGA) is excited to team up with the Whittlesea Agricultural Society in organising BGA’s inaugural Boer Goat Show, which will kick off on Saturday, November 3 as part of the 2018 Whittlesea Show. Boer goat breeder Joe D’Andrea of Bailieston Boers in Nagambie, said it would be a not to be missed event. k7KLV ZLOO EH WKH o UVW VKRZ LQ Victoria dedicated to exhibiting animals from all aspects of the Boer goat industry, with all varieties of Boer goats on display, not just stud animals, he said. “The 2018 Whittlesea Show will exhibit classes for red, black, painted (patches of different colours) and standard Boers (white with a red head), as well as classes for commercial non-registered goats judged on their meat potential and a junior class for young farmers.

Profit driven by kg per hectare STRATHVIEW Maternal Genetics have concentrated their breeding program on weaning as many kilograms of lamb per ewe as possible through selecting rams with performance recorded maternal attributes. Recently, the team has been working in conjunction with Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) to increase survival in triplet born lambs. Stud principal, Tim Lubke, said by slightly lowering the condition score before ewes give birth - and selecting higher birth weight rams – they have achieved higher survival rates in triplets. “Some Strathview triplet bearing ewes have the ability to wean over 100kg of lamb at 100 days, making WKHP WKH PRVW SURo WDEOH VKHHS RQ the farm,” he said. While the Strathview focus is not to have all their sheep bear triplets, there is ground to be made up in terms of lamb survival - and that’s what the MLA project is focused on. “Our triplet mobs are returning on average 208 per cent weaning, and twin bearing ewes are returning 171 per cent,” Tim said. “Ewes this year scanned in lamb at 198 per cent, and have an average adult weight of 71kg, and lamb down at 11 ewes per hectare.” Along with growth, Strathview Genetics sheep have a great conversion rate and respond well to feed. They quickly put on condition, which has helped them retain the high survival rates even in dry times - as well as the strong maternal mothering trait that has been bred LQWR WKH p RFN The breeding background of Strath-

More than 800 exhibitors on 1200 sites - representing over 3500 companies - will present some 14km of external shopfront for visitors to the field days, on September 18 to 20. MAXIMISE BATTERY PERFORMANCE

HENTY AYS IE F LD D

Maximum battery performance and longer battery life with Recharge “EVERY battery you buy, and every battery you own, is sulphated - and sulphation kills batteries, so says Gerard Anselmi from Recharge Battery Additive. k$QG HYHU\ oHOG GD\ ZH do have farmers with batteries well over 12 to 14 years and still going. After 15 years selling Recharge in Australia, and 20 years in NZ, the Kiwi exfarmer says it is a simple formula. “Don’t wait till they die and try and resurrect the dead because sulphation damages the lead plates the earlier you treat them the less damage is done and the longer batteries will go. Lead acid batteries die prematurely from sulphation build-up, but a Recharge treatment will dissolve the lead sulphate build-up; turning those sulphur ions back into sul-

phuric acid holding electrons, re-aciding the battery. “We are chemically reversing the sulphation process, one chemical reaction to counter another, maximising battery charge holding capacity and preventing premature battery failure, Mr Anselmi said. “The key is to get in early before the damage has been done. Mr Anselmi recommends treating batteries early, and then every two years – and keep them charged. “It is so simple - don’t wait until they die and try to resurrect the dead because after the plates have been damaged, it is too late, he said. Gerard and Debbie will be at the Henty Machinery Field Days again this year, where they will be fully stocked.

A 2-litre container of Recharge retails on-line for $395, but will be heavily discounted to $295 during WKH oHOG GD\V The 2-litre is the cheapest way to buy Recharge - with enough to treat 42 x N-70s (battery), or about 20 bigger truck batteries, meaning each treatment costs around $7 to treat an N-70zz – getting you as much as double its life expectancy and an ability to keep it running at full capacity. Recharge can also be used to treat sealed batteries - simply drill into each cell. Recharge is also great for deep cycle batteries like fork hoists, golf carts, scissor hoists and stand-alone power system batteries. Preparing for a drier than average spring By SHANE DOUTHIE LOCAL farmers need to act now to reduce the impact of a predicted dry spring, according to local agronomist Darren McCormick from Landmark Normac. “Given the drier than average outlook for spring, most farmers should take stock of their own situation and plan for the coming spring,” Mr McCormick said. “The water, grain and hay markets are red hot, and unlikely to ease in the short term. “Simply, do everything you can to avoid being in the market.” Mr McCormick said local farmers should roughly calculate hay requirements,

stock numbers and grazing options available today, and then identify any actions that can be taken to help reduce their exposure to purchasing feed. “Mostly, this involved taking advantage of moisture while we still have it,” he said. “Many farmers are still short of available feed and have grazed very low on many paddocks through winter. “Hay and silage reserves are thin at best with many having no hay at all. “While we are still a little drier than we are comfortable with, we are in a far better position that those to our north.” Mr McCormick said nitrogen-based fertiliser can increase growth rates dramati-

cally and granular urea or blended fertilisers should be considered on any paddocks to increase dry matter yield. “It’s a cost, but with good planning will save – or even make – money in the longer run,” he said. “Those wanting hay or silage should apply fertiliser a little earlier than normal if possible and don’t be afraid to be aggressive with rates. “Farmers should also control broadleaf weeds soon if they haven’t already, and identify areas that are producing little or no feed for the farm and consider a spring crop to help set you up for the spring. “Having worked through a couple of droughts, I’ve learnt that early planning and action will always help.”

SOIL and foliar applications are the only tools available to stimulate pasture and crops in winter where adequate soil moisture is available - but the low temperature slows the energy supply. In general terms, for every 10 degrees Celsius drop of temperature, the rate of biological/ enzymatic reaction is halved. However, there are a few ways to stimulate growth in winter. Foliar Uptake: Foliar versus soil uptake helps plant growth in winter for two reasons. )LUVWO\ XSWDNH HIo FLHQF\ RI VRLO DSSOLHG QX trients is much lower than foliar; this is due to a greater dilution of fertiliser in soil as well as slower uptake by the root system due to cold weather. Secondly, foliar uptake uses less energy than soil uptake per unit of nutrient; this is because when a nutrient is taken from the soil, energy is used on its uptake at two distinct points. Foliar uptake in contrast only uses energy once when ions are taken up from leaf free space into leaf cells. Phosphate and nitrogen in foliar spray is HVVHQWLDO WR EHQHo W IURP ,QWHJUDWHG )HUWLOLVHU Management (IFM). Australian Lowlines – they’re the compact breed with a big future THIS year’s Royal Melbourne Show will again showcase the very best in Australian Lowline cattle – the compact beef breed with a big future. Five decades of Poll Dorset breeding at Coledale AFTER almost 50 years of breeding, it’s no surprise the Binnie family know a thing or two about Poll Dorsets. Each year, the stud turns off some of the best rams in the country – and the 2018 sale will be no different. Held later this month, on September 27, the Coledale Poll Dorset stud team have been busy preparing, having shorn all sale stock last month. Since then, they have been on a ration of hammer milled oaten hay, with lu-

pins and wheat for protein; and are now looking every inch the quality animal. The lead sire of this year’s sale rams is Coledale 44/15 – who has bred very well for the past two years at Coledale, and has provided great hind quarters and body shape in all his offspring. This year’s Coledale sale ZLOO DOVR VHH WKH oUVW ORW RI Rangeview 43/15 progeny go under the hammer – young rams who all display excellent carcase, great length

and depth with clean points. Kurralea 740/14 has also produced quality big sons, and is another featured sire at the 2018 sale. “This year, we have a really quality line up,” stud principal Wallace Binnie said. “I am sure there are several rams that would suit the most discerning stud buyer looking for a sire this year.” Over the last 12 months, Coledale has used semen from the top ram on Lambplan, Aberdeen 527/16 - the

number one trait leader in carcase + and growth under Lambplan. “We selected him also for correct structure, clean head and points, and he is in the top bracket for his eating quality index,” Mr Binnie said. “We also purchased semen from Bruan 81/14, who is also a very well-balanced ram with Lambplan indexes to match – these are the kind of quality animals that we incorporate into our genetic base.” Like many across the

country, it has not been an easy season for the Coledale Poll Dorset team. There has been little rain, little ground cover and a resulting rise in early weaning rates. Despite the hard conditions, it has also been an opportunity for the Poll Dorsets to shine. “The breed has the ability to turn off sucker lambs at four months of age, or to carry them through if the season permits to produce those extra heavy weights at

10 – 12 months of age,” Mr Binnie said. “Not many can do that.” The 2018 Coledale Poll Dorset Stud Ram Sale will be held on the last Thursday in September, on the 27th – just before the AFL grand oQDO Rams will be penned by 11am, with a barbecue lunch kicking off at 12 noon followed by the sale at 1pm. For more information contact Wallace Binnie and the team on 5765 2236 or 0427 944 035.

Water belly in goats refers to a reasonably common metabolic problem which occurs as a result of stone formation in the urinary tract. These stones are otherwise known as ‘urinary calculi.’ Urinary calculi form due to an in-balance of calcium and phosphorous within the body, specifically due to a significantly large amount of phosphorous compared to calcium. Urinary tract obstruction occurs when a stone lodges in the urethra blocking the outflow of urine from the body. If not treated rapidly this can lead to rupture of the urethra (or the bladder) which will lead to death of the animal.

Longer battery life with Recharge “EVERY battery you buy, and every battery you own, is sulphated - and sulphation kills batteries,” so says Gerard Anselmi from Recharge Battery Additive. k$QG HYHU\ o HOG GD\ ZH GR KDYH farmers with batteries well over 12 to 14 years and still going.” After 15 years selling Recharge in Australia, and 20 years in NZ, the Kiwi exfarmer says it is a simple formula. “Don’t wait till they die and try and resurrect the dead because sulphation damages the lead plates - the earlier you treat them the less damage is done and the longer batteries will go,” Mr Anselmi said. Lead acid batteries die prematurely from sulphation build-up, but a Recharge treatment will dissolve the lead sulphate build-up; turning those sulphur ions back into sulphuric acid holding electrons, re-aciding the battery. “We are chemically reversing the sulphation process, one chemical reaction to counter another, maximising battery charge holding capacity and preventing premature battery failure,” Mr Anselmi said. “The key is to get in early before the damage has been done.”

Mr Anselmi recommends treating batteries early, and then every two years – and keep them charged. “It is so simple - don’t wait until they die and try and resurrect the dead because after the plates have been damaged, it is too late,” he said. Gerard and Debbie will be at the Elmore Field Days again this year on site 231, where they will be fully stocked. A 2-litre container of Recharge retails on-line for $395, but will be heavily disFRXQWHG WR GXULQJ WKH o HOG GD\V The 2-litre is the cheapest way to buy Recharge - with enough to treat 42 x N70s (battery), or about 20 bigger truck batteries, meaning each treatment costs around $7 to treat an N-70zz – getting you as much as double its life expectancy and an ability to keep it running at full capacity. Recharge can also be used to treat sealed batteries - simply drill into each cell. Recharge is also great for deep cycle batteries like fork hoists, golf carts, scissor hoists and stand-alone power system batteries. AUSTRALIA’S longest running agricultural waste management program has reached another milestone with the collection of its 32 millionth chemical container. If you placed each container from end to end, that’s pretty much the entire length of the Australian coastline. Agsafe’s drumMUSTER program, which began in Gunnedah New South Wales in 1999, is an end-of-life product stewardship program that has already saved councils an impressive $32 million in landfill costs, by diverting eligible, empty containers to recycling schemes. This equates to over 36,000 tonnes of material being recycled. Developed with the environment in mind, the drumMUSTER program collects and recycles eligible, pre-cleaned agricultural and veterinary chemical containers. drumMUSTER is a national product stewardship program that is supported by

Pictured is program manager Frank Wimmler. agvet chemical manufacturers, industry stakeholders - which includes member and farming associations - as well as state and local governments. It is only through collaborative efforts that Australia’s oldest product stewardship program continues its success, with 812 collection sites operated by 360 councils and 142 other community-based collection agencies nationwide. Community groups that are involved with the program receive 25c per drum collected, which over time can provide

much needed funds to local organisations and sporting groups. Agsafe’s drumMUSTER program manager, Frank Wimmler, said the milestone means councils save costs associated with putting empty drums into landfill, while proving landowners were keen to keep land and waterways free of waste. He said the community’s commitment to recycling proved that farmers were valuable custodians of the land. Remember, every container counts.

2018 Elmore Field Days – fun for the whole family THE 2018 55th annual Elmore Field Days are shaping up to be the biggest yet – with more displays, more stall holders, more guest speakers and most importantly, more tractors. Kicking off on October 2 and running for three days, the event showcases all that is new, exciting and innovative in the world of agriculture, from the quarter acre hobby farmer to the large scale broad acre operation. This year, Elmore again falls in the Victorian school holidays which means there is even more reason to pack up the kids and the family and head to one of the biggest ag shows in the state. Because of the timing, a special effort has been made to make all the junior farmers feel like mum and dad - with jumping castles and face painting, along with live kids’ shows and plenty of John Deere merchandise in little sizes. With over 700 exhibitors every interest, age level and dream aspiration is covered – from tools to pools, yards to crushes and everything in between, the Elmore Field Days are a must on the agricultural calendar. There will be plenty to see and do with daily in-paddock demonstrations - highlighting the latest in tillage, haymaking, spraying and sowing machinery. FIELD FASHIONS: Elmore’s Ag Art is one of the most popular shows over the Field Days, with a catwalk daily at 11am and again at 2pm.

From cattle yard to catwalk AG Art at Elmore Field Days is a spectacle like no other. It’s been a tradition lasting more than 15 years, and each \HDU WKH RXWUDJHRXV RXWo WV keep getting better and better. The challenge is this: designers must use materials commonly found around a farm to make a wearable piece of art. The competition has grown from just nine looks in

year one to over 50, and people from all over the nation are starting to get involved. Lorraine Trewick, Elmore’s general interest and ag art chairwoman, created the competition after seeing something similar in New Zealand 20 years ago, and she believes the ingenuity of the RXWo WV DUH LQFUHGLEOH “The imagination people have to put it together every year just blows us away,” said Ms Trewick.

“On the stage, people don’t realise what they’re made of, but when you tell them, they go, ‘Oh my gosh, so it is’.” 7KHVH JHQLXV RXWo WV PXVW remain true to their mission, as store-bought items will incur the designer demerits. Don’t miss the Elmore National Ag Art Wear Competition Parade, on every day at Elmore at 11am and again at 2pm, bringing the inanimate objects of the farm to life.

FUN FOR ALL: This year, the Elmore Field Days falls in the school holidays – and Elmore is celebrating with free entry for those aged under 12.

Kids are covered at this year’s Elmore Field Days EVERYONE knows Dad and Mum love the annual Elmore Field Days, but this year there is a special focus on fun for the young and young at heart. Falling in the school holidays, families are encouraged to come along and have some fun – with free entry for under 12s across all three days of the show; not to mention the free entertainment. A roving favourite with families is Mr Balloon Man, whose talent for balloon artistry precedes him. No one can manipulate

DQ LQp DWDEOH OLNH 0U %DOORRQ Man – elephants, dogs; you name it, he can craft it. Over in the auditorium, Narelle Stone will perform her show, Quirky Tales, each day at 12.30pm. Known as Victoria’s favourite librarian, Narelle will have your toes tapping in no time. For those that like animals, Elmore has you covered – from ponies to snakes and everything in between. If you’re a four legged fan – but not the horsey kind – check out the camel rides – or get along to the

daily creepy crawly display with the reptile awareness display. If ponies are your passion there are plenty of sites – from trough displays to plastic fencing, retail outlets to new stable complexes – but perhaps the most exciting display is the heritage horse demonstrations; get along and watch these gentle beasts in action – cuddle up afterwards for a photo. Intuitive technology allows for accuracy and ease of use THROUGHOUT the design and testing phase of each new product, the Gallagher research and development team undertake a series of on-farm discussions with product users. These valuable insights provide the backbone to the simplicity and rugged nature of the final product available to the market. The latest in the range of Gallagher Weighing and EID products is the TWR5 Weigh Scale and EID Tag Reader. Already the winner of multiple design awards, the TWR-5 has revolutionised the weighing and EID market – providing a tough, farm ready weigh scale with the ability to read EID tags

while eliminating any complexity. Performance conscious farmers, like livestock manager Mark Howard from Duaringa Station, are provided with an innovative system that is reliable, accurate but also very simple to use. “The TW-3 is not one of these where you have to spend three or four days in the office after you’ve finished mustering,” Mr Howard said. “The screen is huge and clear - the unit is really good if you don’t know something too: you can click on screens and it will actually take you through it – and you can’t muck anything up; it’s unreal that way.”

Geoff Oliver, from Englewood Park in Victoria, finds the accuracy of the Gallagher weighing and EID range to be unbeatable. “With the HR5, there are no mistakes… your accuracy is tremendous,” he said. “Moving to EID tags means we can easily manage individual animal data - it gives us a way to very quickly identify the sheep that aren’t producing.” For expert advice on the full range of Gallagher products, including I Series Energizers and Westonfence, visit the team at site 336 at this year’s Elmore Field Days and speak with their territory managers about a Gallagher solution to suit your needs.

Weedwakka deals with your weeds quickly and efficiently WHETHER you are farming, contracting or clearing the back yard, you need Australia’s safest cutting attachment – the Weedwakka. A specialised cutting attachment for your brush-cutter that is designed to eliminate the frustration of using nylon cord and conventional blades, the Weedwakka is an innovative approach to an age old problem. David Thorne developed Weedwakka for heavy vegetation, such as blackberries, saying the attached steel blades could cut anything from grass to woody weeds without ever needing sharpening.

“If the blades strike a rock, they are able to deflect, greatly reducing the kick back, and minimising the stress on the brush-cutter,” he said. “This makes the Weedwakka Heavy Duty ideal for clearing scrub in rocky country.” There are two models of Weedwakka – the Weedwakka Heavy Duty and Weedwakka Multicut. The Weedwakka Multicut has flexible nylon blades that cut cleanly through much heavier vegetation than nylon cord will handle. The blades are clearly visible when rotating, and can be used around trees without

damaging the bark. The MultiCut is ideal for cutting along paths, walls and netting fences, as it eliminates the constant breakage and rapid wear common to nylon cord. When the blades are worn, they can be replaced in seconds without the use of tools. Both Weedwakka models are designed for straight shaft brush-cutters, and are easily attached in exactly the same way as a conventional steel blade. The Weedwakka complies with Australian Standard AS3575-1995 and meets Work Cover requirements.

The one device you truly need in any type of emergency IMAGINE you are stranded; on a boat, in a car, astride a motorbike. There has been an accident - instinctively, you reach for your mobile; but there is no service. What happens next depends on two things - whether you do, or don't, own a KTI Safety Alert PLB. Without it, you are stranded - and must either find your own way out of trouble, or wait for a search party to arrive. With a PLB (personal locator beacon), you can switch it on and - regardless of how remote you are - get a signal out for help. A PLB is the one device you truly need in any type of emergency. Made by Kinetic Technology International Pty Ltd, a PLB works by communicating with the Cospas-Sarsat system, which incorporates an entire constellation of military grade satellites. The satellites belong to several networks that each provides global coverage 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. The PLB-satellite link is incredibly robust, designed to work reliably under the most demanding situations including thick cloud cover and heavy precipitation – even during hailstorms and heavy snowfall. The Cospas-Sarsat system feeds emergency signals directly into the national Search and Rescue facility, eliminating the “middle man” pitfalls of other systems. Unlike satellite phone, there are no commercial contracts or subscriptions and the batteries last for years on standby

without needing to recharge. Put simply, a KTI Safety Alert PLB can save your life. "Mobile telephones just don’t work when they are in black-spots or out of cell tower range and of course, they are totally useless when the battery has run flat or when they’ve been damaged," Kinetic Technology spokesman, Mark Knowles, explained. "A two-way radio is of little use if there is nobody else in range - and if often limited in hilly terrain. "The other option is a satellite phone these are bulky, heavy, very expensive, offer unreliable coverage and have limited battery reserve. Unlike other options, a KTI Safety Alert PLB is lightweight, can be worn on the arm and is, literally, the one thing that could save your life in an emergency situation. The KTI Safety Alert PLB meets all requirements of the Australian Standard, including self-buoyancy if dropped in water; and is waterproof to a depth of 3 metres. It comes standard with a 10 year battery standby life, a 10 year warranty and best of all, is made right here in Australia. The KTI Safety Alert PLB is supplied with a durable carry case, a lanyard with whistle and a mirror style reflector. So do yourself and your loved ones a favour and invest in your own safety; buy a KTI Safety Alert PLB today. For your nearest stockist go to www.kti. com.au.

Fence more than your stock with Waratah FENCE IT TIGHT: Waratah fencing will be at site 628 at this year’s Elmore Field Days, with plenty of information on how to keep your stock in – and the pests out.

YOU don’t get a reputation like Waratah fencing without spending years in the industry. Known for their long-lasting, innovative fencing solutions, Waratah have proven themselves a favourite with Australia’s farmers; and not only for what they keep in, but what they keep out. Waratah’s fencing system is an innovation designed to keep your stock on one side and pests on the other. Using Waratah Jio posts and Longlife wire and accessories, this combined fencing solution allows for quality and consistency in products

to give you the best fencing result. This fencing solution has been particularly popular with exclusion fencing, especially in Victoria. A property near Barham, run by Ken O’Brien, has utilised Waratah’s fencing system to protect his Angus cattle and pasture from kangaroos. The combination of Waratah Stocksafe-T 15/150/15, Jio Star and Maxy posts topped off with a line of high tensile barb at the bottom - has stopped the kangaroos from bouncing over the top.

Waratah is the leading Australian fencing brand, and are proud to be involved in this year’s Elmore Field Days, where their Jio Star, Jio MaxY and Stocksafe-T will be on show. Waratah welcome guests to come and watch the onsite demonstrations happening each day. Try out some of the Waratah Jio post clips, designed to easily clip plain, barb or prefabricated wire to a Jio post. Their 2018 site will be on the corner of Burnewang Drive and Fifth Avenue, number 628.
