Paringa performance off grass BREEDING quality cattle to finish off grass to optimise on farm profitability is the ultimate goal of most Southern beef producers. Thankfully this can be achieved by not only managing pastures and animal health but through selecting predictable and top performing genetics, with proven performance. As a bull breeder, Paringa Livestock Genetics are dedicated, experienced and well researched, and 100 per cent focused on helping beef producers achieve on farm profitability. At the same time we do not lose sight of the ‘farm to fork’ eating experience in meat quality. The role of bull breeder is to select animal populations using a selection response index that includes key profit drivers: calves born alive, fertility, feed efficiency, carcase merit and longevity. The ABI and Dollar Profit Indexes are the best and most simple way to account for the most heritable economic traits. Spending time selecting the next sire team takes many years of practice. Tom Lawson has bred bulls for over 30 years and can conclude that breeding indexes are now the simplest and most effective way to produce the

Utilising the benefits of heterosis and breed differences can boost production without added cost. Paringa StabilizerŽ genetics with dollar profit data will arguably produce more per heterosis per hectare than any other. Understanding feed efficiency and fertility drivers has been a cornerstone of Paringa’s breeding program using proven data over the last 20 years to select for this. The Paringa breeding program only retains cattle that achieve the upper echelons of performance, and so the sale bulls offered in September

have jumped through many hoops to get to sale day. Born unassisted, the weight monitored for age, then independently assessed for structural soundness, temperament, and fertility by semen testing, is all carried out by 12 months of age. Not to mention the cow herd running under tough commercial conditions, with a six week joining period to keep fertility in check. Probing essential plant minerals ROBERT DREWITT, BcSc(Ag), from Guano Australia Pty Ltd, continues with his column on the benefits of guano in agriculture. IN THE last article we went over some of the long history of guano and guano mining around the world. It showed how important as a fertiliser guano was for hungry Western countries feeding increasing populations. The demand for bird guano and especially the sea bird guano from coralised island and archipelagos simultaneously increased as the need for phosphorus as a fertiliser increased. Mono-cropping and the push for ever higher yields witnessed a reduction in agricultural output. As a result in 1872 soil testing began and by 1894 the Chemical Society of London had published an article called Mineral Plant Food in the Soil. Scientists could now measure the minerals in the VRLO DQG IRU WKH o UVW WLPH WKH agricultural industry had a means to take the science and apply that to the soils. Agronomy became a discipline, a branch of science specialising in soil. The need for phosphorus [P] as an essential plant mineral led to John Bennet Laws

What he had discovered was the complex relationship between inorganic and organic fertiliser on crop yields. John Laws’ work also led to

sulphuric acid being added to ground-up ancient guano bird deposits and as a result the modern product of Single Super Phosphate was discovered and commercialised. Producing this additive saw a boom in factories, including those near Australia on Nauru and Christmas Island. So why is phosphorus [P] so important to plants?

Phosphorus is essential for all living organisms with requiring plants require it for normal growth. It plays an important role in respiration, cell enlargement, cell division, energy storage and photosynthesis. In a natural environment phosphorus comes from two sources. Phosphorus salts are released from rocks by weath-

ering and dissolve in water to be absorbed by plants. Seagull guano, in its raw state contains citric and noncitric soluble phosphorus as well as calcium and silica. The unique interaction of these minerals in the guano has a lot to do with how the minerals, including phosphorus, become plant-available while not being as vulnerable to being “tied up or leeched from the soil.

Gestation length, lamb survival and eating quality MANAGEMENT and nutrition of the ewe will always have the greatest influence over lamb survival. So says Derrynock Poll Dorset stud principals, Simon and Ted Beattie. The pair have been at the forefront of Dorset breeding

decrease the ewe assist-rate at birth. “Improving lambing ease, and lifting survival rates to above 95 per cent at Derrynock - well above the industry standard of around 70 per cent – is a very exciting development for us, Simon said.

for years, their philosophy of stronger lambs at birth, with a greater cold tolerance, paying dividends on the farm. Their focus on moderate birth weights with an average or shorter gestation length, and increased milk production, has helped to

“With scanning rates reaching 185 per cent in our commercial flock of approximately 800 meat maternal ewes in recent years, it was time to increase our focus on lamb survival. “We are finding our best results are coming from ewes having 4.5 - 5.5 kilogram lambs at birth. Lambs that are born earlier are not necessarily lighter, but are born with a lot more ease. Mr Beattie explained they generally appear wetter at birth, and the ewes appear to lamb quickly and with fewer presentation issues. The actual gestation length

of the ewes, recorded over the past eight to ten years, has varied from 141 days to 154 days. As a result of selection, we have reduced our average gestation length from 148.5 days back to 147 days in the past three years. As a direct result of the information gathered from gestation-length progeny, Derrynock has seen a reduction in our birth assist rate to less than one per cent in approximately 1000 ewes. These figures are from our 2018 lambing from the 2010 to 2017 drop ewes. The result is a lamb survival

rate of 95 per cent at birth, over all birth type categories. “Our focus this year is also on eating quality with a particular emphasis on marbling, Simon said. “In the coming months, we will have available for sale some of the highest ranked Poll Dorset rams for marbling. “Their progeny will be utilized in testing to evaluate lambs at different ages and weights being fed on a range of different rations. For more information, contact Simon or Ted directly on 0429 330 562 or 0409 189 116 or head to the website at derrynock.com.au.

Glenore Poll Dorset Stud GLENORE Poll Dorest stud aims to produce rams with true dorset type, excellent spring of rib, early maturity and high yielding carcasses for all marketing options – suckers, trade or export. In 1997 stud owners decided to once again show at major shows so they could keep in touch with the industry’s requirements and make sure the stud rams were up with the leading studs in Australia. The decision has certainly paid off for the stud with it achieving a great deal of success in the show ring. Already this year the stud has had terrific success

with Glenore 222-18 winning Junior Champion Ram and then following up with Reserve Champion Ram at Bendigo ASBA and then at Hamilton Sheepvention. Glenore 145-18 had success winning Reserve Champion ram and also winning Sire Progeny Group of three sheep. Ram demand over recent years has continued to grow for the stud, as producers realise the benefits Glenore Poll Dorsets can add to their prime lamb production systems. Lamb producers have been looking for rams that are able to deliver optimum

growth rate in their lambs. This year Glenore Poll Dorset Stud will hold its 9th annual On Property Sale. The stud is again very pleased with the quality of stud and flock rams on offer. With the lamb market now in record territory, this is a wonderful time to be in the lamb industry. With solid returns over the last 12 months, producers can feel confident in seeking the best quality genetics available for maximum returns. Once again the stud has another top quality line-up of ram for its sale on October 2.

Lamb prices on a merry go round UP and down, up and down – so goes the price of lamb at the moment. According to Meat and Livestock Australia, national lamb slaughter hit 2.16 million head in May, the third highest monthly total on record. Since then, the anticipated lamb shortage has appeared, with June slaughter back 33 per cent month-on-month and 23 per cent on year-ago levels. The 1.46 million head slaughtered in June was the lowest monthly total since January 2012. The difficulty processors are having maintaining supply has been evident, with national saleyard prices for trade and heavy weight lambs both rising above 950¢/kg carcase

weight (cwt), before winter shut downs and scaling back of processing at several plants has alleviated some of the price pressure. Despite easing nearly 100¢ since mid-July, the national trade lamb indicator was still 855¢/kg cwt mid August, up 81¢ year-on-year. The average carcase weights of lambs being processed also rose to record levels, a factor which has contributed to the extremely high dollar-per-head prices that have been seen in saleyards. The premium paid for heavy lambs has encouraged producers, despite the challenging conditions, to grow their lambs to heavier weights.

In 2018, when lamb slaughter eased in winter and early spring, processors were able to supplement throughput by processing mutton. Older sheep were well supplied as producers felt the worst of winter and destocked. Elevated sheep slaughter during the first 6 months, will limited the supply of available mutton during spring, as will the impact of improving conditions in the south. With fewer grown sheep available for slaughter and a shortage of lambs, mutton prices also reached record prices of over 600¢/kg cwt in July. Last month the national saleyard mutton indicator was trading at 560¢/kg cwt, up 133¢ on year-ago levels.

Best practice for Victorian beekeepers

BEEKEEPER : BRING IN THE BEES : Ensuring the biosecurity of Australia’s bee colonies is paramount to our agriculural future.

hives for diseases at least twice a year, control diseases to prevent weakening of hives and transmission to other hives and remove hives no longer containing bees from their apiary. The honey bee industry contributes about $17.5 million to the Victorian economy annually, while the value of pollination services to Australia has been estimated at more than $8 billion. Victoria was reminded of the importance of protecting our honey bee population last year when the Varroa mite pest was intercepted on a ship at the Port of Melbourne. “Last year, Victoria’s honey bee industry was threatened by the exotic parasite Varroa mite,” Ms Symes said.

“Adopting these new standards is a great step in protecting Victoria’s valuable honey bee and pollination industries, and supporting the many regional jobs that rely on them.” The response saw industry, community and government come together to successfully respond to and manage the detection and keep Varroa mite from threatening Australia’s agriculture industry. The Victorian Budget 2019/20 has pledged to invest $142.5 million to boost Victoria’s biosecurity system – the largest investment of its type in the history of our state, to keep our agricultural sector secure and prevent the spread of pests and diseases.

Minister for Agriculture, Jaclyn Symes last month met Kyneton beekeeper and AgriFutures Victorian Rural Women’s Award winner, Claire Moore to announce the Australian Honey Bee Industry Biosecurity Code of Practice has been adopted into the state’s beekeeping regulations. The announcement coincides with the start of almond pollination season – the biggest livestock movement in Australia, where about 4.2 billion bees are transported to Northern Victoria to pollinate almond orchards. Best practice biosecurity is crucial in protecting the agriculture sector into the future – and is particularly important during almond season, when the risk of transferring pests and diseases between bees is high. “The new Code is a reminder to all livestock owners, beekeepers and farmers that we all have to follow best practices to safeguard our valuable agricultural industries,” said Ms Symes. The new Code requires beekeepers to check their

50 years of fleece classing Recognition of Murray Hill’s golden profession Ű

MERTON farmer Murray Hill has been recognised for his 50 years of wool classing by the Australian Wool Industry. The award was posted to 0XUUD\ q D FHUWLo FDWH DQG D ‘golden’ stencil with his own number on it. With aspirations at one time of wool classing in every state of Australia, Murray said while he hasn’t achieved this aim he has had a lot of success and a very gratifying career. He started his wool classing while attending Wangaratta Technical School which involved two years studying as part of learning his trade. Taking such a long time, DQG VWLOO QRW o QLVKHG KLV TXDOLo FDWLRQV KH KHDGHG off to Melbourne where he FRPSOHWHG KLV FHUWLo FDWH LQ six months. “If I had not done this I would have been another 18 months doing it part time to get my stencil, he said. ,Q ZRRO FODVVLQJ TXDOLo HG classers receive their own stencil number which they keep for the remainder of their lives, but have to renew their licence about every three years. “Going to Melbourne you get a bigger and broader knowledge; you’re handling wool every day of the week, Murray said. “One day you would be handling Merino and the next cross bred and you got a lot of theory with it. “If you do your classing course today you would not get any of the theory that we were taught. “It was a thorough course

back then and included wool management and book keeping, how to set a contract and run a shed. Murray was born and grew up in Strathbogie. k:KHQ , TXDOLo HG , ZDV lucky enough to get local work and then went to New South Wales classing with a shearing team out the other side of the Black Stump, Murray said. “It was always my ambition though to class in every state of Australia, but that never happened. Murray has classed wool across three states - Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia. Just after he and wife Joy married they went to Western Australia where Murray worked for the WA Wool Board. “It broadened my knowledge of wool and helped me to understand the job better, he said. “Western Australia was a good experience because we were all in and out of different stores and saw how private buyers operate – private buying is very big in WA. Murray believes the wool industry is not as big as it was back then. “There is not the number of sheep around now as it was then – in the time I have been in the industry I reckon I have seen more lows than highs in sheep farming, he said. “We still have Merinos for wool but there is a lot less about than when I started. “I hardly did any cross breeds at the start but now, around this area, there are

more cross breeds than Merino, and we also have fat lambs – the cost is better. “Wool sales are basically exported now – there is not a lot manufactured in Australia. “When I was in Robe (SA) there were four scouring plants but I doubt there are none left now. But Murray is adamant that he prefers to class Merino wool ‘any day’. Murray has a whole album of sample wools which goes back to his learning days at school. He of course immediately determines which wool be-

longs to which type of sheep. One micron in wool is the width of a 1000th millimetre. There were Corriedales, Polworths, Merinos, Southdowns and the different colours that come through wool. “The colour of the wool determines which type of soil they live on, Murray explained. “At Colbinabbin they call it brick red - that is the soil – but the dirt washes out of the wool, it does make a difference to the weight of WKH p HHFH q VRPH DUH KHDYLHU

Natalie has also taken up wool classing. Murray said when he was classing around the district LI KH GLG QRW JHW o QLVKHG RQ the Friday night he would go back on the Saturday and take Natalie with him. She learnt how to wool class and then went on and did her course. It is obvious Murray has loved his job, loved working the many, many people he has met along the way and although probably nearing retirement age has not given up just yet.

Holistic Pastoral transforming Ĺś

From page 1

Knowing nothing about Alexandra and little about Victoria, the family took a leap of faith and relocated. Holistic Pastoral was born out of the family’s belief in only eating meat that they had produced and killed themselves. The interest generated from their endeavours rapidly turned into an enterprise as others wanted to know where Daniel and Aldona were getting their meat. With the realisation that there was a huge demand for meat that people could trace the origin and know the background, the family geared their production towards a commercial market, and two years ago Holistic Pastoral VROG LWV o UVW PHDW Holsitic Pastoral does not own the land they farm on. They borrow, trade or lease the land from people who want to rejuvenate their properties, and currently have 300 acres available for regenerative farming, with interest only increasing. “It’s friends or people who’ve got in touch with us, who want their land looked after, Daniel said. “Which we do. “We fence, we repair dams and we give people meat. “We feed the community with meat that we produce, and we look after the lands that are not being used.

I want to experiment with how I can LQp XHQFH WKH local climate, what we can change as a FRPPXQLW\ ZLWK WKLV V\VWHP of regenerative farming. DANIEL KELTON OF ALEXANDRA’S HOLISTIC PASTORAL

Daniel explains that though the set-up costs are minimal, and that they have no bank debt, the enterprise itself is labour intensive and time consuming. The family graze their Wiltipoll Dorper sheep in a cell, secured by portable electric fencing designed for rotational grazing. The size of the cell is dictated by stock numbers and the amount of available feed, however Holistic Pastoral often opts to run 100 sheep in a 50 by 50 metre square as a rule of thumb. “There’s not much grass in the area so we move the sheep every day and the results have been amazing, said Daniel.

WAIST LENGTH GRASS : It’s the length of the grass and the depth of the roots that are crucial considerations before grazing pasture.

“The sheep take the top part grass, they manure the ground, they take care of your weed problem because they’re trained to eat everything inside the cell, and the pass-on effects have been incredible. “The sheep are not eating next to where they shit the day before, breaking pathogen cycles, and all of a sudden we can run an organic system, with no drenching or foot troubles. The land itself has also seen a complete transformation, with the family only grazing when the grass is ready. The grass needs to go through a full cycle, and Daniel waits until the grass has a couple of dead leaves on

it before re-introducing the stock. “When the grass is high the animals trample it feeding the soil, the fungus, the worms, the bacteria, and ultimately converting the grass into soil carbon, he said. “For pastures depleted by over-grazing, we are returning food and carbon to the soil. Daniel sees grazing a pasture too soon as the biggest challenge for farming. “Issues with stock density or grazing a piece of land for WRR ORQJ FDQ EH UHFWLo HG y Daniel said. “It’s the length of the grass and the depth of the roots that is crucial. “To combat global warming

FAMILY AFFAIR : Marley Kelton has been helping with the stock

we need full length pasture pulling carbon out of the atmosphere and putting it back into the soil. “And when a pasture is left to rest it’s amazing what comes up from dormant seed stocks in the ground. As an integral part of their grazing management the Kel-

tons run meat chickens after the sheep. Commonly known as Broilers, the chickens are purchased as day-old chicks and housed in a handmade brooder before being released into the paddock at roughly three weeks old, depending on the season.

Compact breed with a big future THIS year’s Royal Melbourne Show will again showcase the very best in Australian Lowline cattle – the compact beef breed with a big future. The registered Australian Lowline cattle of today are descended from those original Aberdeen Angus cattle imported from Canada and Scotland in 1929 by the NSW Department of Agriculture - to run at their Trangie and Glen Innes Farms. From there, every Lowline animal in Australia is able to trace their DNA, and is parent verified before registration to prove they come from the same genetic pool as the one that originated in 1929. According to Lowline breeder and Whitby Farm stud principal, Ken Lorains, Australian Lowline cattle are one of the few breeds that retain pure genetics from the original herds in their countries of origin. Benefits of the Lowline breed include: Compact frames – at just 60% of the size of larger breeds, it is possible to run more Lowline cattle per hectare; and Excellent feed efficiency – the breed offers an exceptional feed to energy ratio, and are early maturing, able to be finished on grass and produce more kilos per hectare. The Australian Lowline Cattle Association (ALCA) is available to provide information, support and guidance to all breeders, and will be on site at the Royal Melbourne Show to talk about the breed that has

everyone interested. The ALCA runs promotional groups in all states of Australia and provides help and support to new breeders. The group has dedicated youth activities for young enthusiasts, and pride themselves on providing informative and enthusiastic information to all those interested in the breed. “For those keen on the commercial breeding of Australian Lowline cattle, we have a lot of information about stud breeding, AI approved sires, heritage semen and more, Mr Lorains said. “Lowline cattle are perfect for commercial breeding due to their compact size, longevity, easy calving and quality meat. “They are the ideal breed for every purpose. For more information, visit the Lowline cattle displays at the Royal Melbourne Show, watch them being judged on Saturday 28th, September at the show, or visit www.victorianlowlines.com.au and www. lowlinecattleassoc.com.au If you can’t get to the Melbourne Show, Australian Lowlines will be the feature breed at the 160th Whittlesea Show on November 2nd and 3rd 2019, with judging to take place on November 3rd. There will be a Victorian Lowline Breeders information stand and a number of expert speakers. This is a great opportunity for people thinking about going into Lowline cattle to get an introduction to the exciting and diverse possibilities that exist for Lowline cattle producers.

Echuca dairy home to best Holstein bull

FAMILY AFFAIR: Craig Lister is the proud owner of Australia’s best Holstein bull, according to Genetics Australia. Mr Lister is pictured here with his children Alex and Ollie, along with one of his bulls daughters.

CALISTER Maebull has been confirmed as Australia’s best Holstein bull, according to Genetics Australia. Owned by Northern Victorian dairy farmer and Holstein breeder Craig Lister, Calister MAEBULL is based at Genetics Australia’s Bacchus Marsh farm “He’s the ideal modern-day bull with moderate stature, good health traits, and his daughters get back in-calf quickly while still producing well, Mr Lister said. “I’m glad he’s providing the kind of cows that dairy farmers are happy with and I hope that he can continue to do so for a long time. Mr Lister, who milks 350-400 mostly highly-ranked registered Holsteins, purchased MAEBULL as an embryo from the USA to introduce a new cow family. “In 2012 when the dollar was near parity, I saw an opportunity to import US genetics from a well-regarded cow family, he said. “I looked for cow families that I admired for their consistency in breeding

profitable, productive Holsteins and in looking for embryos with bloodlines that had worked well in Australia. The embryos that led to MAEBULL were from a cow sired by Shottle, one of the most famous Holstein bulls in the past 20 years who had worked well in Australia. Her dam was sired by Oman, who turned the Holstein breed around with health traits to address fertility and longevity problems. “Both those bulls had worked well in Australia, Mr Lister said. “The embryos were sired by Palermo and he was among a group of Goldwyn sons we were using ourselves. “There are some differences between what works in the US and in the grazingbased Australian system, but these were as close as we could get to genetics that we knew would work here. Born at the Calivil farm, which is just outside of Echuca, the bull was moved nine months later to Genetics Australia to join the 2013 young bull team.

North East farmer amongst 100 top producers for milk quality

AFTER years on the cusp of the dairy industry’s top prize for milk quality, North East Victorian dairy farmer Chris Hibberson has been announced as a 2019 winner of Dairy Australia’s Milk Quality Awards. Despite facing challenging seasonal conditions, Chris has entered the top 100 producers for milk quality nationwide by maintaining his focus on mastitis management and milk quality, resulting in better outcomes for his heard health and his bottom line. Chris and his wife Nicole purFKDVHG WKHLU DFUH p RRG LUUL gated dairy farm at Yarroweyah, outside of Shepparton, after previously share farming on the property. A 50:50 split calving pattern is used for their 220-cow mixed herd. The feedbase is made up of lucerne and grazed pasture, as well as some hay, which is fed out in rings on a temporary feed pad esWDEOLVKHG LQ D VDFULo FH SDGGRFN to get through the dry season. For Chris, producing high quality milk comes down to three factors – maintaining excellent

teat condition, early detection and treatment of mastitis, and herd testing. Chris is often in the dairy and keeps a close eye on the herd and milkers. Keeping the cows calm is important, as calm cows kick the cups off less often, have better milk let-down and move through the dairy more easily. Chris says he has seen improvements in his Bulk Milk Cell Count (BMCC) of 20,000-30,000 cells/mL in changing his rubber wear from round to triangular liners. Teat condition is not just managed in the dairy – Chris LV D o UP EHOLHYHU LQ SURYLGLQJ enough shade to cows in the hotter months to reduce the risk of health problems including mastitis, especially for his autumn calvers. When cows experience heat stress in late pregnancy, it suppresses their immune system for several weeks, leading to a higher risk of mastitis. Chris routinely uses a chlorhexidine teat spray in the dairy. Teats are kept clean and inspected for any abnormalities

at every milking. “Identifying and treating cows ZKHQ WKH\ o UVW FRPH LQ LV RQH of my secrets to keeping a low cell count throughout the whole year, Chris said. When a case of mastitis is idenWLo HG &KULV XVHV DQ LQWHUPXV cular antibiotic to treat all four quarters, rather than treating quarters individually. Cows are clearly marked after treatment for ongoing monitoring and management. A major challenge for the business is addressing spikes in cell counts immediately after calving. As a preventative measure, all cows receive dry cow treatment, which treats existing infections that were not cured during lactation and reduces the number of new infections during the dry period. For one to two months following calving, all cows are stripped weekly, and more often if heifers are prone to mastitis. In early lactation, Chris checks to see that all cows have been milked out properly. Dairy Australia’s Countdown program considers a Bulk Milk Cell Count (BMCC) below 150,000

Granular Products tackles tussock, gorse BESIDES being unsightly, serrated tussock significantly reduces the capacity of your land. With a life span of 20 years and the ability to produce 140,000 seeds per year, stopping seed-set in spring is an imperative. Flupropanate has been the basis of serrated tussock control for decades. Depending on the soil type and rainfall, it can provide up to two years control. GP Flupropanate is a quality, Australian-made granular herbicide.

“Using granules, either by aerial or hand application, allows you to reach hard-to-access areas like gullies and tree clumps where serrated tussock often proliferates and reinfests, so as to achieve complete control. “Liquid applications just cannot match the versatility of a granule outlined Granular Products’ Hamish Graham. “Another benefit for small and large landholders, is the fact that you can make applications when you have labour available. “The granule won’t be

The majority of these products contain trace elements which will help your silage last longer as the bacteria applied will also be fed with these products. Step two is we treat the soil for acid, low calcium and trace element deficiencies. Apply our liquid calcium product, N:Cal, or calcium magnesium, Cal/Mag 5:1, at two to 60 litres per hectare for a low cost, immediately available calcium. Add our Liquid KickStart NPK and trace element liquid fertiliser to the mix and have a low cost, concentrated trace element application. Apply five to 10 litres per hectare. Mix both together for a minimal pass, low cost trace element mix. Step three is directly after haying, grazing or mulching, spray onto the soil five to 10 litres of Kickstart per hectare. If nitrogen, calcium or magnesium is low apply 20 to 60 litres of N:Cal or Cal/Mag 5:1 per hectare. Step four is maintaining the yields with foliar spraying. A few days before grazing, foliar spray with our liquid NPK LeafSpray. Then add N:Cal and Cal/Mag 5:1 at one to two litres per hectare. It is imperative that the pregnant mare is well fed. The nutritional requirements of the mare will increase by 20-30% during the last 3 months of pregnancy. As the mare approaches the end of her pregnancy she should be in good body condition, but not too fat - the over weight mare may have trouble foaling and may lose condition after foaling, which may stop her coming into season after foaling. Abor tion in late pregnancy is also a concern. There is a wide range of causes for abor tion in the mare, but in general, older mares tend to have a higher incidence of abor tion. Various bacteria can cause an endometritis leading to abor tion. Apar t from bacterial endometritis other causes of abor tion include, viral or fungal infection, and twinning. The most common viral agent causing abor tion in mares is

equine herpes virus I, which generally causes abor tion in the last trimester of pregnancy. Some mares will show signs of abor tion before it occurs, such as dripping milk prematurely or having a vulval discharge. Other mares may abor t without any warning. If your mare does show any abnormal sign during her pregnancy, you should consult your veterinarian. As the foaling date approaches, it is impor tant to check and see if a Caslick’s operation has been performed on your mare. The Caslick’s operation involves suturing the top of the mare’s vulval lips together to minimise the risk of uterine infection. If the operation has been performed, the vulva will need to be cut open prior to foaling.

Another consideration, is the mare’s vaccination history. It is advisable to have the mare vaccinated for tetanus and strangles, about a month prior to foaling. If you intend to send your mare to stud this is also impor tant. Most studs insist on pre-vaccination with tetanus & strangles; while some others will also insist on equine herpes virus 4,1 vaccination. If all this is followed the pregnancy should proceed without complication. If in doubt, at any stage, during the mare’s pregnancy it is advisable to contact your veterinarian. Warby Street Vet. HEAVY DUTY: The Weedwakka is ideal for clearing scrub on rough ground.

Brush cutting made easy CONTROLLING weeds around the property is an ongoing problem for most of us, and the thought of dusting off the old brush cutter o OOV PDQ\ SHRSOH with dread. To make the job a whole lot easier, a small company in Warrandyte has developed the Weedwakka, a cutting attachment that eliminates the frustration that many people experience when using nylon cord and conventional steel blades on their brush cutter. For woody weeds such as blackberry, the Heavy Duty Weedwakka is the perfect tool. The hardened steel blades will cut anything from grass to blackberry and saplings, and never requires sharpening. If the blades strike a rock, they are able WR GHp HFW JUHDWO\ reducing kick back and stress on the brush cutter. The Heavy Duty

Weedwakka is ideal for clearing scrub on rough ground where you would not want to go with a conventional steel blade. Around the back yard, the MultiCut Weedwakka is ideal for trimming along paths, walls and netting fences. It eliminates the constant breakage and rapid wear common to nylon cord, and when the blades are worn, they can be replaced in seconds without the use of tools. The MultiCut Weedwakka has nylon blades which will cut much heavier vegetation than the nylon cord can handle. They are clearly visible when rotating, and can be used around trees without damaging the bark. The Weedwakka is available from site 110 at the Elmore Field Days. so far will be used for projects including solar energy systems, sustainable solar-powered dairy systems and irrigation and electricity upgrades. Some farms are expected to save over 40 per cent on their annual energy costs. Farms from across the state, including those in the Wangaratta, Moira, Wellington, Alpine, Gannawarra, South Gippsland, and Campaspe shires have been successful. The grants process will now be streamlined for dairy farmers applying for small energy grants, who will now be able to receive grants up to $50,000 for eligible equipment without requiring an on-farm energy assessment. For more information on how to apply for assessments and grants, visit agriculture.vic.gov.au.

Sow much better – Upper Furniture for now and forever Murray Seeds to launch new products at Elmore UPPER Murray Seeds will be launching two new lucernes at the Elmore Field Days, so when planning your day, make sure visiting this exhibitor is a priority. Adding to their existing seven and nine lucernes and RQ GLVSOD\ IRU WKH o UVW WLPH will be the highly winteractive SilverSky Lucerne and moderately winter-active SilverLand GT Lucerne. Now providing an option for most Australian farms, the UMS Silver range offers winter-activities of 5, 7, 9 and 11. SilverSky has been bred to suit Australian lucernegrowing areas from the subtropics to dryland, and being extremely winter-active also tolerates frost and the cold. Performing equally well in winter and summer, it is a very vigorous plant with rapid regrowth and sets the bar high in terms of dry matter production. SilverSky is a high yielding, premium quality lucerne suited to fodder production, and works well in a wide range of forage systems. The plant is characterised

by erect, dense and leafy growth with an excellent leaf to stem ratio. With disease and pest resistance one of the lucerne grower’s main concerns, this lucerne is highly resistant to spotted alfalfa and bluegreen aphids, amongst other things. SilverLand GT lucerne also demonstrates high resistance to pests and diseases, yet is more a long-term crop option than the SilverSky due to its

extreme persistence, in some cases upwards of ten years. SilverLand GT is truly grazing tolerant: it withstands sigQLo FDQW JUD]LQJ SUHVVXUH DQG persists due to its low, broad crown and erect leafy growth. After grazing or cutting, SilverLand GT Lucerne experiences rapid regrowth, and is highly persistent in dry conditions, something all graziers would appreciate. Suited to inland regions of Australia and ideal for dryland forage and grazing, this variety is suitable for both sheep and cattle grazing. Because it’s able to tolerate high levels of salinity, SilYHU/DQG *7 p RXULVKHV ZKHUH others struggle. The SilverLand GT lucerne however is predominantly used for summer forage, making it ideal for areas with good winter rainfall. Upper Murray Seeds can now offer growers multiple levels of winter-activity in their Silver range to suit all the lucernegrowing areas in Australia, and so are incredibly excited to showcase their new lucernes at the Elmore Field Days.

Hardwood Mills – AGSAFE awards recognise the Australian choice for outstanding community effort portable bandsaw sawmills WHEN it comes to milling your own timber whether it is slabs, dimensional timber or laminates, no one knows more than Hardwood Mills, Australia. Designed in Australia for Australian hardwoods the portable bandsaw saw mills are guaranteed to cut all Australian hardwood as well as exotics. Most recently the team have produced the new GT34. The GT34 will hold a 34 inch diameter log, 26 inch wide board and a deep 18 inch gullet that allows you to go straight to the centre of the log. This allows you to cut the tension out of the timber, quarter saw or just leave your slabs on and keep going without having to lift them off. The GT34 has a 18 HP V twin engine Briggs with a 3 year commercial warranty. Six meters of track enable you to mill 5.1 meters all for an affordable $8,490.00 including GST. An optional trailer is

AT THE recent Agsafe Stewardship Conference and Awards in Brisbane, a Victorian cricket club from Kaniva was recognised for their efforts by being awarded the drumMUSTER Community Group of the Year. When Kaniva Cricket Club needed a way to fundraise for their community group, they choose drumMUSTER as their pathway. In 2010, the club started inspecting chemical containers and to date have inspected just shy of 50,000 Agvet chemical containers. The Kaniva Cricket Club’s annual collection returns on average 6,000 drums each year. In 2010, the cricket club saw the benefit in educating local farmers about the program; conducting a farm to farm drive about how to clean the chemical containers and which ones were participating in the program. The Kaniva Cricket Club continue to promote the drumMUSTER program with their drum returns growing every year. The judging panel

KANIVA CRICKET CLUB : Tim Meyer and Andrew Maddern represented the Kaniva Cricket Club at the award ceremony. were impressed with the commitment the club had to raising much needed funds while at the same time helping their local enviroment. Kaniva Cricket Club’s Andrew Maddern said of the win, “I’m proud of what our club has achieved, not only helping the environment but

putting vital funds into the community.” Agvet chemical reseller, I.K Caldwell (Shepparton) won the Agsafe Outstanding Agvet Premises award, with Bendigo City Regional Council being named a finalist in the drumMUSTER Council Collection Facility award.

AUSTRALIA’S young agricultural innovators, scientists and researchers wanting to make a difference in agriculture are invited to submit their innovative agricultural research project ideas for a chance to receive a share in up to $242,000 in grants. Minister for Agriculture, Bridget McKenzie, has encouraged 18–35 year old innovators to undertake new and creative research to help agricultural industries to overcome industry challenges and to realise its potential. “Australia is a world leader in agricultural innovation, and ingenuity has allowed Australian agricultural industries to become more competitive, resilient, productive and profitable, and to overcome barriers to growth,” Minister McKenzie said. “Our continued advancement is this area is needed more than ever. “Many of these ideas come from young people working or studying in the industry, and the Science and Innovation Award grants aim to support early career researchers, scientists and other innovators to develop new approaches to industry issues. “On top of that, one grant recipient receives the Minister’s Award for an extended research project which will have real and practical benefits to the agriculture sector. “The depth of scientific research underway in our research institutions has a very practical application in addressing long term challenges

to increasing productivity for our primary industries. “It is inspiring work and I look forward to seeing this type of innovation on farm. “I encourage passionate young people who are studying or working in these fields to submit the projects they have to improve the productivity, competitiveness and sustainability of their industries.” Last year’s special Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Award recipient, Dr Kateryna Bazaka of the Australian National University ,was recognised for her project which investigated integrated electric discharges and aquaculture for abattoir wastewater treatment. For more information visit www. agriculture.gov.au/scienceawards. Fast Facts: z Applications close at 5pm on Friday, October 4. Award recipients will be publicly presented as part of the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) Outlook 2020 Conference in Canberra. z Since they were launched in 2001, the Science and Innovation Awards have helped 250 young researchers, innovators and scientists turn their ideas into reality through just over $4 million in grant funding. z 11 industry award categories are available in the 2020 round, with each winner to receive a grant of up to $22,000 (including GST).
