Shepparton producers scoop the maize pool 19.5 tonne Maize crop wins national award Ű
CSIRO STARTUP: New insect-monitoring technology startup, RapidAIM, is receiving a $1.25m boost to protect Australia from the world’s biggest biosecurity barrier to trade: the fruit fly, which costs Australia more than $300 million every year. Founded by researchers from Australia’s national science agency CSIRO – including (from left) Laura Jones, Nancy Schellhorn and Darren Moore from CSIRO’s Victorian office - RapidAIM provides real-time fruit fly detection and monitoring to help Australian producers battle against the devastating pest.

around $115/ML for Goulburn 1A, at the time equating to a total cost of $690/ha just for water. The award winning crop was sown at a rate of 95,000 seeds per hectare, following a vetch silage crop the season before. The area was then subbed up using the sub-surface drip irrigation before being strip tilled and directly planted to maize. Mr Hamono said one of the advantages of sub-surface irrigation was being able to apply nitrogen to the crop during the season to match demand, with a total of 270kg/ ha applied during the growing season. The nitrogen applications commenced after seeding, with approximately 39kg/ha of nitrogen applied fortnightly until tasselling. Mr Hamono typically targets 16 tonnes per hectare for maize across his entire property, which includes medium and short season varieties of grit and feed.
A MAIZE crop grown out of Shepparton has taken out a national award, with all three top placegetters from the same region. Ian and Mary Hamono from Cooma won the irrigated section of the National Maize Competition, with Craig Reynolds from Congupna and Kagome Farms from Rochester rounding out the top three. The Hamono family grew a crop of Pioneer hybrid P1467, which was yield tested at 19.54 tonnes per hectare and used just six megalitres per hectare of water throughout summer. “I had a pretty good inkling that I was right up there with the yield that I got,” Mr Hamono said. “It’s pretty neat – I was runner up last year, so I would have been really disappointed if I didn’t make the grade this year.” Each season, Mr Hamono carefully considers his cropping options for the area, irrigated via both sub-surface drip irrigation and pivot. During the 2017/18 season, the average price of water was

THE inaugural Victorian Limousin Society On Farm Challenge has been run and won. Some 22 studs from all over Victoria took part in the challenge, with just over 150 animals entered in the various classes. The Northern Limousin Group had animals entered from three different studs. All studs did well, with Limstow Limousins taking out the Champion Senior Bull. Mistletoe Limousins of Greta obtained a second place in the 12 to 16 month old heifers in a class of 11 animals, with the home-bred Mistletoe Nelly.
Not to be outdone, in the 16 to 20 month old heifers Mistletoe Nice One, from the same stud, placed second in a class of 25. The supreme exhibit went to Manoora Park Nadia from the Western District. Mistletoe Limousins also received highly commended with bulls in the 12 to 16 month class, and 16 to 20 month class. Stud principal Denis O’Connor was pleased not just with their individual results, but with the showing of all studs from the North East and the event as a whole. The Limousin On Farm Challenge judge, Peter Collins, was im-
pressed with the structural soundness, conformation and softness of the animals - which showed sound breeding principles and a passion for the breed. Southern Stockfeeds provided a driver and vehicle to take the judge, photographer and Victorian president to the 22 participating studs. Over 2200 kilometres were covered over a hectic three days, followed by a presentation night in Bendigo. This dinner was well attended and planning is under way for the event for 2019 and it is hoped that it will become an annual event.

The farmer received a Community Corrections Order with 200 hours community service. z Euroa saleyards promise THE Nationals have pledged to spend a further $325,000 on further redevelopment works at the Euroa Saleyards, incumbent member Steph Ryan has promised. Ms Ryan has said the funds would be used to further roof existing pens and new scales. z Grant for stone-fruit A $250,000 Victorian Government grant was announced in Tatura last month, aimed at creating a coalition of stone-fruit growers to help crack the Chinese market and increase export numbers. The grant will allow the summer fruit Export Development Alliance. z Go ahead for solar farm A SOLAR farm has been approved by the Victorian government to be constructed at Congupna. Three other projects – located at Tatura East, Lemnos and Tallygaroopna – are awaiting a final decision. z Fish hatchery proposed AN 80 hectare fish hatchery has been proposed for Shepparton, if the Labour Government retains power at the upcoming election. Victorian Agriculture Minister, Jaala Pulford, has pledged $7 million to the facility. z Livestock agent killed A HIGHLY respected Armidale livestock agent has been killed by a freak lightning strike during a dog trial at Geurie last month. Victorian fruit CSA Australian first Ĺ°
Focus on value, not cost
ANT Wilson wants to combine community support with ethical farming, and has opened his organic orchard up to doing just that. Instead of taking his produce direct to market, Ant wants buyers to know their fruit; where it comes from, how it is produced and who is farming it. 1RZ $QW KDV SLRQHHUHG WKH o UVW dedicated fruit CSA share program – an idea that brings together the wholesomeness of communal living with sustainable agriculture. Commonly called CSAs, a Community Supported Agriculture program is an emerging method of sales and distribution, used most commonly in the sustainable farming sector. CSA members sign up for a ‘share’ before the start of the growing season - which guarantees them regular deliveries of fresh produce for around 18 weeks. “What makes a CSA different to regular box schemes is not only direct interaction between farmer and member, but also commitment and risk sharing, Ant said. k,W V D PXWXDOO\ EHQHo FLDO DJUHH ment – as the farmer, I can mitigate my risk through pre-sales, and as CSA share-holder members can get the best produce delivered to a central location, but also know that their fruit comes with more story than just a sticker from interstate. Ant runs Tellurian Fruit Gardens, an organic orchard in Harcourt, Central Victoria. Previously known as the Mt Alexander Fruit Gardens, the property was featured in a recent North East and Goulburn Murray Farmer feature when, along with three othHU IDUPHUV WKH VWDWH V o UVW RUJDQLF
co-Op was formed. Like many, Ant is concerned about the future of agriculture – the QHHG WR EDODQFH FRPPHUFLDO SURo W while minimising carbon footprint and food miles. While the idea of a farming CSA is not new – the scheme is popular in Japan and America – Ant believes his LV WKH o UVW IUXLW RQO\ RSHUDWLRQ “I’m excited to be introducing a new way for people to connect directly with the farm and get great value at the same time, he said. “By engaging with my CSA, members are getting ownership over their food system – they have a chance to learn and participate through our direct relationship. In a further break from traditional fruit-boxes, Ant is asking people to nominate a price they wish to pay when they sign-on for the CSA. If a box of fruit is $10 to produce, members are asked to pay its value, rather than the cost. The hope is, Ant said, that those that can afford to will pay more; with the excess then used to help those who cannot afford even $10. “Some people have a lot, and some don’t have enough – I’m asking people to pay above the suggested price – so that I can offer the produce to some at a lower price, he said. If the current fruit season does not meet expectations, Ant already has a store of stewed, juiced and preserved fruit that will bolster fresh varieties in the weekly deliveries. The Tellurian Fruit Gardens CSA sign-up process is open until November 25, with the forms available at tfgardens.com.au.

Beef market update RECENT rain across eastern Australia has sparked optimism in the cattle market, with price gains observed across almost all major indicators. Over-the-hook (OTH) indicators also benefited, particularly in Queensland where most categories rose between 6¢/kg and 17¢/kg carcase weight (cwt). Unlike store cattle prices, which are beginning to recover following a difficult season, OTH indicators strengthened during the past year. Strong prices at the finished end of the market are a positive sign for the industry, as they reflect growing international demand for high-quality Australian beef. Rising OTH indicators also hint at the potential upside for the store market given improved seasonal conditions. Much like NSW, prices in Victoria have been relatively stable (current end of October). Cow prices remained depressed when compared to NSW and QLD, with the poor season contributing to heightened supply in the south. Trade steers and heifers were flat. Heavy steers were also unchanged.

Final chapter begins for Witherswood Angus stud

The 400 plus lot female herd sold for $2,026,500 with a sale average overall of $4658 with $38,000 the highest price paid for a cow by Bannaby Angus stud NSW. The 248 cows sold made an average of $5721 and apart from the top price of $38,000 also included single lots reaching $22,000 and $20,000. The 133 heifers sold averaged $2921 with a top price of $7000 and 18 bulls sold at an average of $4750 with a top price of $7000. In their early 80s, John and Joan have dedicated almost three decades of their life to developing the best bloodlines in Australia – most notably, when Witherswood joined a consortium to buy Millah Murrah Kingdom K35 for $150,000, the most ever paid for an Angus bull at the time. “Our genetic base is second to none, John said. “Our foundation cows were purchased from Booroomoka Angus over 20 years ago – we ZHUH RQH RI WKH o UVW 9LFWRULDQ breeders to purchase from the very successful Millah Murrah Angus in NSW, and we also have Te Mania as well. “These genetics, the best in the country, are all through our herd. Witherswood had a breeding herd of more than 350 registered cows and developed a reputation for producing cattle with thickness, length, muscle and bone structure. Stud manager, Ian Peake, said the stud worked hard to retain the Witherswood type of
functional high fertility, soundly structured cattle that are in good working order, and not over fat. “We believe that in maintaining these traits, as the foundation of any breeding program, gives the breeder more options in targeting various markets along the supply chain, he said. “To put it bluntly, our success is the buyer’s success. Ideally, the Witherswood team would like to see their hard work carry on through other studs. “The sale of our property is the o QDO VWDJH ZKLFK ZLOO SUHVHQW D great opportunity for an opening in the North East for someone to set up and supply bulls to our loyal clients, John said. “A ready-made stud property, with facilities and viewing yards made for on farm selling will be offered when Witherswood goes on the market. After the dispersal is complete, John and Joan will trade the country for city life – keen to spend more time with their children and extended family.

their 80s, decided several months ago to leave the industry and sell their 2000 acre property to move to Melbourne to be closer to their family but they will depart the Angus breed at the very top of their game. “We feel we have left a real pathway for others to carry on that breeding, John said. “We’ve had a lot of people come along way to get a share in the breeding we have developed and we will still follow their progress and see how they go in the future.

MORE than 200 people from around the region and interstate last week gathered at a managing climate risk in agriculture conference held at the George Kerferd Hotel in Beechworth. The Farmers for Climate Action (FCA) – an advocacy group on the front line of climate change and creating solutions for the agriculture and food production industry – brought together primary producers and industry leaders as well as scientists and legal, health, and market experts. The FCA conference aimed to help farmers adapt and manage the effects of climate risk with sessions that included clean emission reduction, carbon management, o QDQFLDO DQG LQVXUDQFH VROXWLRQV and building rural resilience. Farmer, FCA chair and agribusiness leader, Lucinda Corrigan, said that a national strategy would assist the government take a lead role, help with funding and invest in knowledge gaps and being prepared. “It would help with laws and regulations required to adapt and adopt at a business and industry level too, she said. Ms Corrigan said that this would include the state planning
framework for renewable energy and innovation in the regions. With red meat industries already working to be carbon neutral by 2030, Ms Corrigan said investments required would be considerable to develop the new methodologies to mitigate emissions across the lamb, beef and goat industries. “A national strategy would assist that process as well, she said. As industries moved at different rates, Ms Corrigan said most had developed plans to adapt to climate change such as the wine and dairy industries, with sugar industries and others following. North East Catchment Management Authority chief execuWLYH RIo FHU .DWLH :DUQHU ZKR opened the conference, said the North East was a place where
sustainable land management for social, environmental and economic outcomes with agriculture of particular importance, was critical to the North East. “Without action on climate change what we value here and across regional and rural Australia, is under threat, she said. Ms Warner said the authority is keen to be a part of planning for increased climate variability and working with industries and regional councils. She urged the farming community to recognise the urgent challenge. In his keynote address, Melbourne University’s Professor Tim Reeves - a world-renowned sustainable agriculture and food security expert - said the greatest challenge faced by humankind was
global food and nutrition security. “We have a rapidly growing global population increasing by 150 people every minute needing to be fed nutritionally, he said. “Nutritional security is as important as food security. “We’re no longer talking about future climate change as it is already affecting global agricultural systems. Professor Reeves said food production that could double in 30 years time needed sustainable ways to preserve water, land, and ecosystems, while improving agriculture and food production systems. Ms Corrigan said grass roots action was the important part of change, cultural change, community leadership, and building capacity.

NAB Rural Commodities Index rises 6.5 per cent slightly this month from 18.1 million tonnes to 17.4 million, UHp HFWLQJ GRZQJUDGHV LQ :$ Victoria and South Australia. Although October did bring good rain in some areas, eastern production will still be below average with a lot of cereal crops already cut for hay. “With a large portion of the canola crop now also cut for hay, prices are high and could remain that way for most domestic grain throughout summer and into next year, Mr Ziebell said. Livestock prices have been mixed, with cattle prices holding up quite well - but lamb falling of late. “After a big increase in late August, the National Trade Lamb Indicator (NTLI) has come back to a similar level as this time last year, sitting at 697 c/kg, he said. “Wool has seen some weakness too, although EMI is now back above 2000c/kg. Cattle prices have remained resilient, with the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) up 6.1 per cent despite tough conditions. The EYCI is predicted to remain in the mid 400-500c/ kg range over the coming months. “Although there has been a big drop in demand for re-

ABARES’ September estimate for sorghum production in 2018/19 was around 1.6 million tonnes, however, even a good season is unlikely to fully ameliorate the feed shortage owing to limited pasture and the poor winter crop. Global dairy prices remain disappointing, after early October saw another decline in USD terms. “While the lower AUD has supported the domestic indiFDWRU LW V GLIo FXOW WR VHH IXU ther increases in the current climate, Mr Ziebell said. The BoM three month outlook is mostly drier than average, except for parts of WA and the NT. The bureau has now moved to El Nino alert, pointing to a 70 per cent chance of an El Nino event developing this year.
MCAV Cattleman’s Cup entries open for event in January riders compete in a series of qualification events on the Saturday, and the top 10 qualifiers in each category race each other for line honours over a testing course on the Sunday. President Graeme Stoney said it was the first time the event had been held at Oxley Recreation Reserve, and the horse facilities already in place would make for one of the best courses yet. “Cup riders need to display a range of horsemanship and cattleman skills in the qualification events on the Saturday, with only the top
riders making it into the race on the Sunday, Mr Stoney said. The cup is only part of the action at the Get Together; there’s a full program with live bands nightly, whipcracking, horse and family novelty events, bush poetry competitions, dog high jump, panel forums, displays, food and merchandise stalls and more. Three day camping tickets are available and there will also be day entry. The 2019 Oxley Get Together is proudly sponsored by the Rural City of Wangaratta.

IN what is the biggest monthly gain since December 2010, strong wheat and cattle prices drove a 6.5 per cent rise in the National Australia Bank (NAB) September Rural Commodities Index, released last month. Results once again varied by state and commodity, largely due to mixed seasonal conditions across the country. Strong grain prices saw the index rise 10.8 per cent in Western Australia (WA), its biggest gain since 2012, while in Tasmania it only gained 2.8 per cent on the back of weak global dairy prices. NAB Agribusiness economist, Phin Ziebell, said that challenging seasonal conditions in the eastern states had seen domestic grain prices hit extreme levels, with ASX wheat jumping 22 per cent to average $430/tonne. “Domestic grain premiums are banking on very limited eastern Australian supply and export, Mr Ziebell said. “Tight volumes do look likely given the poor state of eastern winter crops, and there are associated concerns around the ability of livestock producers to absorb feed costs in drought conditions. “The national wheat production forecast is down

Luxury brand lessons for small Australian vignerons AUSTRALIA is home to some of the best winemakers in the world – but there is a never ending struggle to balance quality, price and the customer perception of both. That’s according to 2017 Nufo HOG 6FKRODU DQG 6RXWK $XVWUDOLDQ wine maker, Toby Bekkers, who with support from Wine Australia, has released a research report revealing three key elements of success that luxury brands possess. Having been fascinated with the psychology and strategy behind prestige brands for many years, Mr Bekkers was motivated to use his 1XIo HOG 6FKRODUVKLS WR UHVHDUFK WKH techniques and concepts that brands use to drive price premiums. “Fine wine is a discretionary purchase, and while many small wine producers will not, and don’t aspire to, become true luxury brands, there is surely something to be gained by understanding luxury brand strategy and the associated approach to customer engagement, Mr Bekkers said. brands had three things in common. They understand their unique brand identity, they work to understand their customers’ emotional drivers and desires, and they are master storytellers. “These brands engage with consumer groups that are attracted to their unique attributes, rather than tailoring the product to a particular demographic. “I’m not suggesting that they ignore the customer, but they focus on clues to their emotional needs and align communications accordingly, he said. “I came across a perfect example of this at Krug Champagne in Reims, France; at Krug, a training manager told me very clearly that they have their own brand identity, and the
customer gravitates toward them. Mr Bekkers’ travels to Cambridge Thoroughbred Stud in New Zealand illustrated the power that storytelling has to propel a brand and reputation. “Cambridge’s founder is a consummate storyteller, he said. “The brand’s ancestry is full of DQHFGRWHV RI HDUO\ VHWEDFNV VLJQLo FDQW KRUVHV VWDEOH o UHV DQG YLVLWV from the Royal Family. “These stories have become a part of the Cambridge legend, all UHLQIRUFHG E\ ERRNV o OPV DQG PH dia articles. “Ultimately, they feed into what is the most powerful marketing tool of all: reputation and word of mouth, he said. For Australian winemakers, a shift from production-centric com-
munication to marketing strategies based on engagement with emoWLRQDO WULJJHUV WR LQp XHQFH EHKDY iour will be key to achieving a price premium, Mr Bekkers said. “By being more attentive to the three elements of storytelling, brand identity and customers’ emotional drivers, small winemakHUV PD\ o QG VXFFHVV LQ SHUVXDGLQJ customers to value their wine more highly, he said. “Small winemakers should focus at least as much of their energy on marketing and communications as they do on production. “The most successful brands of all categories are likely to be those who recognise the importance of this and take steps to resource those components of their business.
Coordinated defence against plant disease WINE Australia and Hort Innovation have teamed up through the Plant Biosecurity Research Initiative (PBRI) against a devastating bacteria that could cripple the country’s multibillion dollar wine and horticulture sectors. Xylella fastidiosa is an exotic bacteria that prevents a plant from feeding by impeding the movement of rising sap. While Australia is currently free from Xylella, it threatens more than 350 commercial, ornamental and native plant species across the country. The impact of Xylella overseas has been catastrophic, infecting more than 200 million citrus trees in Brazil, destroying one million olive trees in Italy and devastating the Californian grape sector – causing annual losses in excess of US$100 million. Dr Jo Luck, program director at the PBRI, said there was no known cure and prevention was the only safeguard against what has been deemed Australia’s most threatening exotic plant disease. “If established, the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) has estimated the potential cost to Australia’s grape and wine sector alone at up to $7.9 billion. “The impact on Australian horticulture would be just as devastating, she said. Wine Australia and Hort Innovation are currently recruiting a Xylella coordinator to develop research and development priorities and projects.

Power, efficiency and responsiveness are hallmarks of the 130 Series, with the 6130 suited to a range of applications within the local market. “These combines are ideal for operators looking to replace earlier model AxialFlow Combines, or the smaller owner/operator or contractor looking for a cost-effective, efficient harvester, said Tim
Slater, hay and harvest product manager for Case IH Australia/ New Zealand. The 6130 has a Tier 3 engine emission standard (322 rated hp/382 max hp), 2-speed hydro transmission allowing for a maximum harvest speed of 13.5km/h, fixed cleaning system and a large (300 Bu) grain tank. Features include: z A-Post instrument cluster with automatic crop settings; z AFS Pro 700 display with yield and moisture mapping; z AccuGuide complete
with HP/XP receive and Nav Controller; z lateral tilt feeder, singlespeed with 21 spline header coupler; z Ride Control Accumulator; z standard elevators with yield and moisture sensor; z unloading auger base tube 6.4m (extended wear); and z straw chopper (fixed blade) and dual disc straw spreaders. “Our Axial-Flow Combine range has been improving
harvest quality and productivity, and maximising operator comfort for more than 40 years, Tim said. “The 6130 lives up to these high standards, with no combine simpler to operate, or more efficient around the paddock, regardless of the crop, field condition or farm size. For more information about the 6130 Axial-Flow Combine, or other models from the Axial-Flow range, see your local Case IH dealer or visit the Case IH website at www. caseih.com.

Prince Charles sends support to Strathbogie woolgrowers in Australia, having his own worldwide “Campaign for Woolâ€?. The campaign aims to raise awareness among consumers about the unique, natural, renewable and biodegradable benefits offered by the fibre. Local woolgrower Chris Thomson was a recipient of the letter, and has previously provided an envelope of wool to the prince when he requested the assistance of woolgrowers in Australia. Woolgrowers from Branjee, Geoff and Jane Broughton, also received a letter, saying they were absolutely amazed to see it. “We were so surprised and he signed off as Charlie, which I thought was a very affectionate way to sign off, it was like he really meant it and it was a very personal letter,â€? Patchy rain brings reprieve for some FARMERS in Central Victoria have been granted a month’s grace following patchy rainfall in October. Producers within a 40-kilometre radius of Alexandra received between 20-40ml of rain – enough to keep feed on the ground for a further six to eight weeks.
Yea Elders agent, Ryan Sergeant, said it was a case of too little, too late for some – but that others would now have feed till December. “We’ve had a large dump of rain, which is very welcome,” he said. “It’s really much needed rain
for all of our lower country – but our hill country is well and truly gone and dried off, so it’s too late for that. “We really needed it, just to maintain our lambs and our cows over the next 6-8 weeks.” It has been one of the driest starts to spring on record, and
the latest Rabobank October commodity report shows September was the driest on Australian record. The same report also predicts the dry conditions will be on-going – at least until Christmas this year. Mr Sergeant said the Octo-
ber rain had fallen in a small band across the state, with the North and North East receiving the majority of the good falls while many in Queensland received their yearly averages overnight. “New South Wales and Queensland have been so dry,
it’s putting a bit of pressure on our southern markets down here – the rain up there will stem the bleeding of the cattle; it’ll also increase a bit of demand from those who have sold livestock and want to reo OO WKHLU SURSHUWLHV ZLWK OLJKWHU cattle.

Lamb market update AFTER hitting record highs at the end of winter and then steadily declining during September, lamb prices have seen somewhat of a resurgence over the past few weeks. Widespread rain sparked keener interest from producers looking to restock and increased demand was evident across most categories. The national re-stocker lamb indicator (0–18kg cwt) was 737¢ on October 22, an increase of 57¢/kg cwt week-on-week. The heavy reliance of the re-stocker market on seasonal conditions often results in more pronounced fluctuations that are not as prominent in the more feeder and processor-centric markets of the trade and heavy weight lambs. Throughout much of October, the re-stocker lamb indicator in Victoria fell away compared to SA and NSW, as the rain that fell across much of the eastern seaboard didn’t extend far south.
Through the first half of the year, trade lamb indicators in all states were generally within 50¢ of each other. Since the end of June, however, price variations between states have become more pronounced. At the start of September, trade weight lambs in NSW were trading at a 70¢ premium to Victoria and a further 158¢/kg cwt ahead of SA prices. During the three weeks to late October, saleyard throughput has returned to a more normal level in terms of livestock weight distribution. The eastern states have experienced some fluctuation recently with an above average supply of heavy lambs in June and July, followed by an influx of light lambs through August and September. The relatively even spread of weights in saleyards last week is in line with year-on-year levels.

Decades of septic system misery, banished in days. Queensland couple Mike and Rose Maynard talk about their decadeslong battle with septic tank odours and fouling, and the environmentally friendly solution that restored their pride in their home within two weeks.
“Our septic system was put in when we built in 1988, says Mike Maynard from his rural property in sunny Queensland. “Over the years we have had continuing problems with the system not working properly. The area around the trench would get so wet and boggy that we could not even walk near it, let alone use the mower. But that wasn’t the worst bit of their dysfunctional septic system. “The smell would become almost overpowering at times, says Mike, “especially when it rained or when we had visitors to stay, which was quite embarrassing.
The stink that stuck The problem wouldn’t go away, which is common with septic tanks and wastewater treatment systems. “As time went on, the smell was becoming a constant thing,â€? explains Rose. Septic systems are much like a digestive system for your house. Just as you need healthy bacteria in your body, your septic system needs a healthy balance of good bacteria to process the waste from your home. Otherwise, problems occur and recur. “We were at a loss as to what to do to ďŹ x it, apart from getting the septic pumped out again, digging up and replacing the trench, or even replacing the whole system – all expensive options,â€? says Rose. “But then we read in a magazine about Ecocare Activator.â€?
Cleaners don’t cut it Often confused with traditional septic system cleaning products, Ecocare Activator is much more than a cleaner.
Sound advice about odours “My husband rang and spoke at length to George at Insight Environmental about our problem and, based on that conversation and George’s assurances, we decided to try Ecocare Activator, says Rose. “We thought, ‘Really, what do we have to lose,’ as it is only a fraction of the cost of the other options we had. What happened next surprised Mike and Rose, but not George.
Fast forward for the Maynards “We were astounded by the results and how quickly it happened, says Rose with a smile. “Within a couple of weeks the smell was gone and you could see the area around the trench drying – something that had not happened for twenty years or more. That was in the winter of 2013. Today, Mike and Rose still have a healthy, odour-free septic system. “We now have a dry paddock, Mike explains. “We can mow and walk all around the area. “We could not be happier with the results and will continue to use this fabulous product.
It’s an easy-to-use, environmentally friendly, septicsafe solution that activates and conditions your septic system. It gets the ‘digestive system’ healthy again, which, in turn, clears the blockages that cause bad odours and keeps the entire septic system clean.

Relentless blue skies Drought, from a woman’s perspective currently experiencing now – but typically, this does not mean animals dying in their hundreds because the dam ran dry. Rain has never meant so much to me as it does now - it’s become my daily wish and my constant hope. It is our livelihood, and without it our children may not get the chance to continue that. And what makes it hard is there is just no one to blame and nothing we can do about it. It’s not the weather man’s fault. It’s not your neighbours’ fault for getting more than you, and it’s not the water birds for allowing you to believe a myth that their presence means rain. You can sell stock, pump water and renegotiate that loan - but you cannot make it rain. It is quite simply, timeless and stubborn Mother Nature. Love her or hate her, she rules our world and shatters lives. But oh, how we love her when she does good by us. I’m not a prayer, but I’m also not ashamed to admit that I have stood underneath a blue and cloudless sky and asked for the winds to change and the earthy smell of wet ground to envelop me. I WONDER at what age my youngest child will ask ‘what’s it like to jump in puddles?’ He is 4 years old and is yet to see more than a couple of inches fall on his soft little hair. I have lived here a short nine years, and seen no more than three inches in one grand opening of the skies. Of course, this is my normal because I haven’t seen the ‘great rains’ that have turned the dry dirt to grass, WKH VZDPSV WR o OO DQG WKH cattle to fatten. But, in fear of sounding greedy, I don’t want normal anymore. I want to erase the stress off my husband’s face and see him spend time, guilt free, with his fast-growing children. I want to be like the girl on the movies who stands, arms outstretched, while the rain soaks her exhausted body. I want to know what it feels OLNH WR ZDON WKURXJK ZLOGp RZ ers and then pick a vase full to brighten the house.
I’m just so tired of relentless blue skies. But this is drought at its most honest; it goes beyond the news broadcasts and the celebrity visits. It keeps going well after the cameras have stopped rolling and the microphone is switched off. It is so much more than an inner-city resident on water restrictions and seeing a patch of their yellow on their lawns, and it is more than giving $2 at McDonald’s and then worrying about burning your lips on a large latte. ,W V OHWWLQJ WHDUV p RZ DI ter seeing a heart wrenching documentary on how a 5th generation farmer has walked off his patch of dirt, a broken man, cursing the skies. It’s seeing school aged kids start charities, truck companies cart hay for free and growers give their goods to those in need. And for me, what it truly is, is having to say no to attend a wedding, a 30th or a Christmas gathering because if you say yes, you may lose 10 breeding cows to a drying dam. It is opening your eyes to what this country is dealing with beyond the suburbs. It hasn’t been easy, coming into a family business, being accepted and then accepting this life as my own. Being a Victorian put me on the back foot from the beginning. Of course I knew about drought, but where I am from in North East Victoria drought has a different meaning. There are seasons with no rain – like what they are

FIRE AWARENESS AND PREVENTION
November 2018 BE PREPARED: The Aussie Bushfire Survival Guide is full of tips and information on how to best prepare your property ahead of the bushfire season. The guide is available from authorised Aussie Pump distributors, CRT locations, Landmark, NRI and irrigation and mower shops around Australia, or online at www. aussiepumps.com. au.
PROTECT IT WITH DAVEY: Davey Pumps offer a new remote start firefighting pump.
New pump for fire emergencies A PUMP that can prioritise emergency use over normal pumping duties has just been released by Davey. The Davey Remote Start Firefighter MKII is suited to both firefighting and regular farming tasks, making it a highly versatile addition to rural properties. It was developed in response to buyer feedback on the original Remote Start Firefighter, launched in 2017. The new model offers extended capabilities for broader farm use, while retaining the auto emergency start feature of its predecessor. Davey head of training and education, Ashley White, says many firefighting pumps are never used, which is good because it means properties
have not come under fire threat - but it also meant the pumps are an underutilised resource. “The MKII allows the pump to be used for everyday tasks like filling stock troughs, sprinklers or watering trees, with the benefit of immediately switching over to emergency responses such as sprinklers on roofs if heat sensors detect an issue, Mr White said. The Davey Remote Start Firefighter MKII provides SMS confirmation of starts and stops, as well as details about battery charge, phone signal strength and even failures and the emergency response can be turned off by text or by turning a key at the unit. “People are busy these
days and this allows them to know that their property is protected in emergencies, but that their pump can be doing day-to-day operations in the meantime,â€? Mr White said. “It’s a great combination of practicality and peace of mind.â€? Davey is Australia’s international water products company, designing, building and selling products to protect and enhance people’s lives with water. The Remote Start Firefighter MKII is now available from dealers across the country in both single and twin stage models. If you have a private electric line, please ensure it is clear of vegetation to reduce bushďŹ re risk. A registered electrician or certiďŹ ed tree clearer can help you clear your property of any unwanted vegetation. During a bushďŹ re you may experience interruptions to your electricity and/or gas supply, even if your property isn’t directly affected. For this reason your bushďŹ re contingency plan should factor in possible loss of gas and electricity.

FIRE PROTECTION ACTION PLAN
Protecting and enhancing people’s lives with water.
ARE YOU READY FOR THIS BUSHFIRE SEASON? Remote Start
A fire plan is the first step to ensuring you are on the way to being bushfire ready. The second step is to ensure you, your equipment and your home are protected.

You need an engine powered pump for both asset protection as well as post fire management of burning fences, surrounding vegetation and other structures including buildings. If you already own a Davey Firefighter, there are some simple, but important steps you need to take to get your pump ready for the coming season.

Firefighter High Powered Twin Stage
GET READY... Few people are ever fully prepared for an emergency like a bushfire outbreak and the speed at which the fire front can travel. Consequently they often allow little time to implement an effective fire defence. Davey has a list of recommendations for effective management and maintenance for consumers, ahead of the fire season. 1. Know the machine: All members of the household need to be proficient in the location, operation and fitting of attachments like inlet and outlet hoses to the fire pump. 2. Practice: A well rehearsed and documented fire plan is critical to personal survival. 3. Fuel - Petrol: Many people fail to recognise that petrol has a limited life, losing its volatility and effectively becoming ‘stale’. A simple and recommended solution is to change the fuel every two months, either by running the pump or draining it of fuel. Better still, both leading petrol engine manufacturers offer a fuel stabiliser which will dramatically extend the life of the fuel, but it must be added when new fuel is purchased. 4. Fuel - Diesel: Has a longer shelf life but it generally needs to be stored at low ambient temperatures to extend the storage time. Major fuel companies expect diesel fuel to have 12 months or longer life at an ambient temperature of 20ºC, or six months at an ambient temperature of 30ºC. 5. Engine oils are another consideration and individual engine manufacturers offer their own specially branded engine oils to best suit their engines. Synthetic multi-grade engine oil is NOT a suitable alternative, so it is important to follow the manufacturer’s engine lubrication recommendations. 6. Running the engine regularly will ensure that oil is well distributed around the moving parts to provide best lubrication and a longer working life.
7. Air cleaners are another important consideration, so ensure your pump set has adequate clean air access. The air cleaner or filter needs to be checked and replaced as per the recommendation of the engine manufacturer.
Keep me handy
davey.com.au | 1300 232 839
8. Keeping the engine cool also has a dramatic effect on the power it can deliver. Protecting the pump from radiant heat in a flame proof enclosure is the ultimate solution, while adding a mist spray around the pump or its enclosure will aid cooling and humidify the air. 9. A general maintenance regime involving regular checks will ensure that fuel lines are in good condition, the recoil starter works and a regular service schedule is adhered to will pay dividends. 10. Check the plumbing: Time spent investigating and maintaining the water system is also important. 11. Check for leaves, debris and sticks: These can impede the inlet system, while for permanent installations, a foot valve and strainer at the end of the suction line can overcome obstructions. 12. The system should be checked for air leaks and to check that all gaskets and seals are in good order. 13. Having an underground ring main installed around your property with durable hydrant or standpipe outlets can give you much greater coverage. So, as the summer fire season approaches the traditional motto of ‘be prepared’ applies. Establish your fire plan early. Adequately brief and train all family members in its resources and features.

Goat webinar GOAT ownership is on the rise in Victoria. Whether for pets, meat, dairy, or as convenient lawn mowers, the common question remains: how can I better care for my animals? Producer-led project, Stock Sense, is providing the opportunity for goat owners to get the answer to that very question with an interactive webinar. Goat health veterinary officer, Dr Berwyn Squire from Agriculture Victoria, will walk through the 101 of owning goats; from the role goat owners play in traceability to the do’s and don’ts of goat care. The webinar will also cover basic husbandry and disease management practices. ‘STOCK UP: keeping and caring for goats’ is free to attend, and will be held from 8-9pm on Tuesday, November 13. The webinar platform is easy to use with no software downloads required, and technical support is offered throughout the session. For a detailed program and to register visit www.stocksense. org.au or phone on 1300 020 163 or stocksense@vff.org.au.

Ronobri has been breeding the best for 70 years
BEST IN THE BUSINESS: Robert Mitchell, from Ronobri Poll Dorsets, has been breeding Poll Dorset, White Suffolk and Ryeland sheep for decades.
ROBERT and Lorraine Mitchell run Ronobri Poll Dorset, White Suffolk and Ryeland Studs at Lockington, just north of Bendigo. The Poll Dorset Stud was founded in 1969, and they annually join around 300 breeding ewes. The Ryeland Stud was founded in 1948, joining approximately 100 ewes annually. The White Suffolk Stud was founded in 2003, with 150-plus ewes mated each year. Across the three studs, between 150-200 stud and flock rams are mostly sold privately on property to clients within a 150km radius. Ronobri regularly add top sires to the stud to enhance their breeding program – often outlaying $8000-10,000 for these rams. The outsourced rams are largely purchased from Armdale/Armdale Park at Marrar, NSW, one of the country’s leading Poll Dorset Studs. At the 2018 annual sale, Armdale Park 198/17T was purchased for the
top price of $12,000. Detpagrove and Anden bloodlines are used in the White Suffolk Stud. With stable bloodlines, it enables Ronobri to maintain evenness of type and conformation, with a strong emphasis on structural soundness and good Downs-type wool. Ronobri rams consistently sire prime market topping lambs for their clients. On property, Ronobri run only their stud sheep, which ensures a very strict health status; in particular brucellosis accreditation and OJD vaccination. As Ronobri approach almost 50 years of breeding Poll Dorsets, 16 years of breeding White Suffolks and 70 years of Ryeland breeding, they believe the quality within the studs is at an all-time high. Over the years they have continued to display sheep at major events, such as the Elmore Field Days, Bendigo Agricultural Show and Geelong Agricultural and Pastoral Society Show.

Enterotoxaemia (pulpy kidney) occurs in young, rapidly growing animals, especially after a gastrointestinal disruption caused by a change in diet such as the start of grain feeding.
Clostridial diseases are caused by bacteria found in soil and faeces. They form highly resistant spores that survive for a long time and are widespread in the environment.
Black disease occurs when there is damage to the liver, such as that caused by migrating liver fluke. The 5 in 1 vaccination for cattle protects against the five common clostridial diseases:
Cattle rapidly become unwell when the bacteria enter the body (via cuts or ingestion) and conditions in the body allow multiplication of the bacteria and/or toxin production. Clostridial diseases can occur in cattle of any age, but are more common in younger animals. Marking/castration, dehorning and calving injuries create an opportunity for bacteria to enter the body.

Recommended vaccination course:Vaccinate calves from 6 weeks of age. Give two doses,
4-6 weeks apart. Give the first dose 4 to 6 weeks before marking, and a booster at time of marking. Adult cattle which have never been vaccinated should receive two doses, 4-6 weeks apart. A booster 12 months after the initial two doses will give lifelong immunity to tetanus and blackleg. Annual boosters are required to maintain immunity against black disease. Immunity against enterotoxaemia (pulpy kidney) only lasts 3 months. Young stock (up to 2 yo) may require boosters at appropriate intervals, depending on local and seasonal conditions. If there is a change in diet (eg the start of grain feeding) a booster is recommended.
