Wangaratta Farmers’ Market transitions online By EMMA OLIVER
REWARDING THE VISION: With a dream of diversifying away from the ups and downs of cropping, Mat Jenkins applied his knowledge of farming systems to of all things Murray cod. Utilising on-farm dams at his Bilbul property, Mat successfully trialled growing out the fish, and from these preliminary steps, Murray Cod Australia was born. Taking advantage of the good quality water and agricultural land of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, the company has become a success story, renowned not only for their quality product, but their strong stance on sustainability and positive company culture. This is a business that goes from strength to strength - inspiration for all those looking to diversify and follow a passion. Turn to page 10 for the story.

IN direct response to restrictions that witnessed local markets postponed or cancelled, the Wangaratta Farmers’ Market (WFM) moved quickly to ensure the livelihood of their producers. The Wangaratta Farmers’ Market Hub has been operational for the last seven weeks, and in this short space of time has experienced more than a 50 per cent increase in online orders. Opening on a Monday morning and trading through to Thursday afternoon, their first online market at the beginning of April generated sales of 61 boxes of customer-chosen produce. Two weeks later, sales had increased to 91 boxes and feedback was great, as consumers embraced the new online market with its weekly access to their favourite seasonal produce, and a convenient Saturday morning pick-up time. With numbers remaining consistently above 90 boxes each week, the business model has proven to be a success and managed to inadvertently attain a goal that the WFM had been striving to achieve for some time. “We have been wanting to increase the offering of local seasonal produce in Wangaratta, but were unable to increase our on the ground market

to fortnightly or weekly,” said Mary Daly, manager of the Wangaratta Farmers’ Market. “As we are an accredited market with the Victorian Farmers’ Market Association our farmer or producer has to be at the market to interact with the customers. “This is achievable once a month, but not feasible on a weekly basis as it takes them off farm too much. “Our main objective is to grow our small primary producers in the region by offering them a fair market place. “Be that on the ground or online is how we see this happening. “We will always return once restrictions are lifted to an onground monthly market, however, we do sense that this online market continuing alongside it may be what we need in the future. “The online market represents a leaner system to producers, and though they have to grow and make to supply demand, there are the huge benefits of guaranteed orders reducing waste. “From producers coming out of the bushfires, with COVID-19 now affecting their livelihoods as markets are put on hiatus and farmgates closed, the response to our hub has been very positive.” ■ Continued page 5

TRESTLE of gloriously vibrant vegetables - a celebration of colour each awarded their own special space on the market stall - Heirloom Naturally is a market garden in Mansfield, tended by owner Simone Boyd. The stall is indicative of Simone’s entire approach to farming where heirloom vegetables are handharvested directly to order. The emphasis is on fresh seasonal produce grown in the field, free of synthetic inputs and pesticides. And with all crops seeded or transplanted by hand, nurtured through until harvest, and beds then broad-forked before a truckload of rich, loamy mushroom compost is applied, Simone’s produce is big on flavour and dense in nutrients. In the early stages of production - once Simone decided to make a commercial venture of her passion - heritage Berkshire pigs cleared the weeds and fertilised the growing area of Simone’s newly purchased block. Twenty acres of agricultural land, five kilometres out of Mansfield, carved from larger farmland, the vacant block had gorgeous views everywhere and to Simone’s delight her very own functioning windmill. To make the rural dream complete, Simone just needed a vegie patch. Having grown vegetables for herself for the last 20 years, a small personal patch was always part of the plan.
And when Simone and husband Cam fasttracked their plans to move to Mansfield, what had always been a lovely daydream - the desire to grow vegetables for a living - became a reality. “We were in Macclesfield in the Yarra Valley beforehand, and Cam and I had always loved the outdoor lifestyle Mansfield had to offer with its dirt bike riding and four wheel driving,” Simone said. “Our retirement plan was to move to Mansfield, but we didn’t want to keep living in what had effectively become metropolitan Melbourne, and with my role as a mental health practitioner for the CFA, I was based throughout the North East region anyway. “Cam and I looked at each other and said ‘What are we waiting for? Let’s just do it.” By nature Simone is conservative in her decision making preferring predictability and defined outcomes, however, with the move to Mansfield has come the adopting of the mantra ‘What are we waiting for’ and ideas and dreams have been realised. “To make the initial step of selling vegetables for a living was a huge leap of faith,” Simone said. More a hobby at first, Simone was selling produce at the Mansfield Farmers’ Market and working off farm. However, fuelled by great feedback and rave reviews, a seed was very gently sown, and Simone began to hope for a future that involved growing vegetables full-time.

business model, little gestures like this fire her passion for the heirloom vegetables she tirelessly champions. “I specialise in what might be considered oldfashioned vegetables and micro-greens,” Simone said. “It’s not the usual stuff you see in the supermarket, and I get a real buzz from getting to educate people about the vegetables - why some of my carrots are purple, or why this particular pumpkin is unique. “To be able to explain that a particular variety is 200 or 300 years old, and tell the story behind it is a privilege.
Simone to plant her crops much closer together than a conventional farmer. “In the same space that a conventional grower could plant two rows of carrots, I can grow five,” Simone said. “And as I tend everything by hand with no use of tillage or tractors - just replenishing the soil at the end of my growing season - not only do my vegetables taste great and are good for your health, my farming technique benefits the environment by keeping carbon in soil, reduces water requirements and regenerates the land. “When we bought the property it was grazing land, and I was too excited about the view to even check the top soil, which turned out to be virtually non-existent. “Initially I had to buy in 20 plus metres of mushroom compost at the end of each season, but I’ve got to the BOYD point where I only have to do this once a year now as the soil is thriving.” And as the soil is thriving so too is the business, despite the challenges that 2020 have thrown at Simone and Heirloom Naturally. “I could expand if I wanted to,” Simone said. “But there is more than enough on-farm to keep me occupied. “My produce is seasonal and with everything out in the field I’m very much at the mercy of Mother Nature and what gets thrown at me each year. “To go bigger I would need to put somebody else on, and one of my foibles is that I like things done in quite a particular way. “What I have created is manageable, and though not certified organic, my credibility is about getting to know me as a grower, understand what I’m about and my principles. “I’m number one quality control along the entire process at Heirloom Naturally, and I do think the quality of my produce reflects the care and individual attention afforded to each and every vegetable.”
It is an incredibly uplifting thing to see your produce on a restaurant menu. - SIMONE “It was this particular interaction that I loved with my market stall. “Equally enjoyable was taking a box of produce to a chef and watch them open it up and truly appreciate the quality of my vegetables. “It is an incredibly uplifting thing to see your produce on a restaurant menu.” With emphasis placed on colour and flavour, and a good dose of nostalgia for market gardens of a bygone era, it is easy to understand why Simone’s array of vegetables are in demand. Carrots and beetroot in all colours, varieties of kale, spinach and chard, lettuce, rocket and mustard greens, along with red onions, rhubarb, radish, snowpeas and herbs all grow in abundance nourished by a soil teeming with organisms and vibrant with life. Using a growing method referred to as biologically intensive, Simone has less than half an acre under vegetables. Her priority on building living soil, rich and diverse in soil microbiology, allows

t is Matt Piccone, owner of the Coffee Merchant, that she credits for recognising the potential of her crop and encouraging Simone to make it a commercial venture. “Matt got hold of some of my produce, and said to me ‘You’ve got to keep doing this’,” Simone said. “He was really instrumental in me making this into a profitable business, and it was the Coffee Merchant who was first to order my vegetables and put them on the menu.” More local restaurants soon followed, validating Simone’s decision to concentrate full-time on vegetable growing and resign from her job. A decision she only made in November of 2019 it allowed her a glimpse of what her business could become, before the bushfires affected the region and the current challenges of COVID-19 required a change of direction. “At this stage, I no longer have the restaurant sales,” Simone said, but she remains optimistic they will return. “Luckily, I also have an email list from my stall at the Mansfield Farmers’ Market so I have been able to contact all my regulars. “These were my customers who purchased from me between markets as produce became available, and now I’m selling predominantly via email with a weekly harvest and farm gate pick-up. “I’m also selling fortnightly through the Wangaratta Online Farmers’ Market offering a set vegie box through the hub, and both avenues are keeping the business moving ahead with limited wastage as I pick directly to order. “It’s been incredibly encouraging, especially as so many customers have taken the time out of their day to send little messages of thanks and appreciation after receiving my produce.” For Simone, who loved the social interaction and feedback of her pre-COVID

From page 1 In further support of their producers the hub is at present run entirely by volunteers who facilitate the packing and distribution of the boxes on Saturday morning, and a volunteer manager and committee. “Initially, it was a huge task for the WFM to move online, but the platform we use which is the Open Food Network, their software and support has been fabulous,” Mary said. “Producers have to join the Open Food Network in order to be part of our hub, and then the only requirement is that they stock their shop keeping items up to date and refreshing pictures.”
This allows producers to retain a degree of autonomy under the supportive umbrella of the WFM, while also giving them the opportunity to respond directly to demand and weekly output, with the opportunity to try new things and immediately gauge results. Local producers have been happy with the initiative, and community comment has been positive ensuring the continuation of the hub for as long as there is demand and support. “Because of our presence in the community, our consumers know us and our values, and know their farmers and producers. “The swing back to supporting local has been gathering momentum for
some time with people wanting to know where their food comes from. “If anything COVID-19 has increased the momentum and desire to know. “With what we have experienced as a
community recently the bushfires and now a pandemic - we feel the time is ripe to build our local regional food presence to a sustainable level so we can be resilient with whatever comes next.”

MORE Australian Government support is on the way for droughtaffected farmers and communities battling weeds and pest animals. Agriculture Minister David Littleproud said 33 councils, individually or as part of a consortium, will share in $10 million to help local farmers and landholders control scourges like rabbits, wild dogs and feral pigs along with some of our most detrimental weeds such as prickly acacia, African boxthorn and serrated tussock. “Managing pests and weeds is a significant cost at the best of times for farmers and even more of an impost for those in the grips of the drought, Minister Littleproud said. “The capacity of these farmers to manage pests and weeds during drought is reduced because they are dealing with other challenges such as feeding livestock and keeping their farm businesses running. “Weeds compete with fodder and native plants. “Rabbits, deer, wild dogs and feral pigs wreak havoc, undermining drought management activities and recovery efforts, and can threaten both livestock and native animals. “Thankfully, many regions are on the road to recovery on the back of fantastic recent rains, but we must continue backing these communities to help them get through to the other side.
PLAN OF ACTION: Weeds and invasive species are taking advantage of fire and drought. “The Australian Government set up the Communities Combating Pest and Weed Impacts During Drought Program to ensure our drought-hit regions have the resources to manage these scourges at a time when they are least able to do so. “This funding is used by local councils to support farmers
and land managers, to reduce the impacts of pest animals and weeds on agriculture and the local environment and to stimulate local economies and employment. Twenty three projects will be funded under round 2 of the program. This will see efforts to remove
tropical soda apple from the Macleay Valley in New South Wales and to reduce blackberry impacts in the Collie, Dardanup, Donnybrook-Balingup shires in Western Australia, along with exclusion fencing for rural communities around Wangaratta in Victoria to keep out wild dogs, deer, foxes and rabbits.

Arista high-fibre wheat on track to enter global market
HIGH-FIBRE WHEAT: Over 20 years in development, Arista Cereals High-Fibre Wheat is already performing well on trial in overseas markets.
IN its first year in retail stores across the USA, a new wheat which delivers three to five times more fibre to consumer products is performing well and will now be marketed to other regions of the world. The high-fibre wheat was developed over 20 years by Arista Cereals, a joint venture between Australia’s national science agency CSIRO and farmer-led cooperative Limagrain. The high-fibre wheat is now available in a range of products in the US, including tortillas, pasta and pizza bases. The high-fibre content was achieved through conventional breeding to ensure more resistant starch than traditional wheat. Largely lacking in Western diets, resistant starch is a fermentable fibre that is resistant to digestion in the small intestine, and known to improve digestive health, protect against the genetic damage that precedes bowel cancer and help combat Type 2 diabetes. Chief executive officer of Arista cereals Eric Vaschalde said this is the first ever wheat that has been developed specifically to target human health benefits. “Our high-fibre wheat has an active prebiotic effect,” Mr Vaschalde said. “People who choose this over conventional wheat are able to boost their fibre intake without having to stop eating the foods they love.” He explained that because of the exceptional health properties of high-
fibre wheat, Arista’s patents have been aggressively challenged in the United States over the last three years. “We knew we had a strong patent position, having filed more than 50 patents worldwide, through different patent families,” Mr Vaschalde said. “Thanks to the help of patent specialists at CSIRO, the expertise of our stakeholders, and the support of our exclusive partner in the USA, we were able to defend our patent position.” After winning the litigations, all disputes were settled at the end of 2019, under favourable terms to Arista. With a strong patent coverage in many countries such as USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, Korea and European countries, Arista is now actively working with potential partners interested in capitalising on the health benefits of high-fibre wheat. Already available in the USA, plans are advanced to have high-amylose wheat products available in Australia from 2021 and in Europe from 2022. At the same time, Arista continues to develop and extend its patent portfolio with improvements to the performance of the high-fibre wheat. The granted patents to Arista in major territories currently extend to 2033 and 2034. “As shown during previous litigations, Arista has a strong willingness and ability with its partners to actively defend its patent portfolio,” Mr Vaschalde said.

From pond to plate: Murray Cod Australia leads by example By EMMA OLIVER NATIVE to the Murray Darling Basin, Australia’s largest wholly freshwater fish the iconic Murray cod has been generating a significant amount of international interest in recent years. Thanks in no small part to the tireless championing of the breed on global markets by the passionate team at Murray Cod Australia, who believe the sky’s the limit for this beautiful eating, top quality fish. Through a vertically integrated business model, the company not only boasts a hatchery, nursery, grow-out facility and processing plant, but is also responsible for all marketing and distribution, allowing the team to track their product through all stages of production and supply. In the process, Murray Cod Australia have become the largest producer of Murray cod in the world, expanding rapidly from an initial six open air ponds growing fish to a total now of 26, with more stages currently in development spread across different sites in the Riverina. Nor is business limited to simply producing and pro-
e GOOD THINGS COME: A slow growing fish, it takes between nine and twelve months for the cod to weigh about 800 grams, with three kilogram fish taking up to two years to make it to market. f STUNNING FISH: Murray cod have a yellow to green mottling, with a silvery belly and white fin tips. With customers enamoured by its creamytasting, flaky, white flesh, Murray cod is taking the international culinary market by storm. moting this high value fish, Murray Cod Australia’s vision is to set the environmental sustainability benchmark for the aquaculture industry not just locally but on a global scale. “Sustainability is our big point of difference,” said Lynsey Reilly, the corporate affairs manager at Murray Cod Australia. “It’s what we are driven by - this desire to have a big impact on people’s plates and a big impact on the planet. “We are working every day in this space to achieve the best possible results from this enterprise, and we never stop questioning how we can improve and what we can do better.” These strong environmental ideals and practices were recently recognised with an Excellence in Sustainability Award at the 2019 NSW Busi-
ness Chamber Business Awards. “Which then took us on to NSW Business of the Year for 2019, off the back of our sustainability credentials,” Lynsey said. Sustainability is a hugely marketable commodity, and with Australia positioned on the international stage as a supplier of safe, high quality fish and seafood, Murray Cod Australia with their Aquna Sustainable Murray Cod have a highly desirable product for not only the domestic but export market. This worldwide reputation for environmentally sustainable practice in aquaculture - within an industry that comes under increasing environmental scrutiny - positions Murray Cod Australia as an industry leader in both sustainability and freshwater fish farming, with one of the
lowest environmental footprints in aquaculture. Progressive in their approach, the fish are cagereared outdoors in landbased ponds utilising the clear waters of the Murrumbidgee irrigation system. This same irrigation water is then re-circulated to irrigate crops or pasture on farm, providing beneficial nutrients in the recycled water, and effectively addressing one of the numerous targets the company sets itself to reduce its environmental impact. All breeding fish for the aquaculture program are now all sourced from Murray Cod Australia’s own farm-raised stock, affording them selfsufficiency status, and allowing the company to develop their breeding capabilities with the intention to supply other growers with advanced
fingerlings in the future. Artificial nests in the hatchery have been developed on which the fish spawn ensuring minimal intervention. Broodfish spawn during spring, and lay up to 40,000 eggs at a time, and the cod have proven to be relatively easy to breed in captivity. Murray Cod Australia also utilise broodfish borrowed from the wild under permit for five years, to breed and raise fingerlings to strategically release into public waterways participating in New South Wales, Victorian and South Australian state government restocking programs. This is just part of the bigger picture that is Murray Cod Australia, as they install solar panels to ensure renewable energy production; proactively recruit women across the business so there is no
gender gap; and employ locally throughout the region around Bilbul and Griffith investing in training and traineeships. It all inspires loyalty, and galvanises a talented team, passionate about what they do with a collective vision that they are working towards. “The nature of the business attracts like-minded quality people, and everything feels right - the right time, the right people, the right business model, combined with this inherent belief in doing things differently, more respectfully - better,” Lynsey said. Better can sometimes be thrown a curve ball, however, and Murray Cod Australia have had to adapt to recent challenges taking the business in directions that were previously not prioritised. Just as COVID-19 has forced many primary producers to rethink business strategy, Murray Cod Australia with up to 20 per cent of their sales in export with a product that they ship fresh has had to develop a pivot strategy and trial freezing the fish, along with concentrating primarily on local markets.

AERIAL VIEW: Naturally schooling fish, Murray cod are reared in purpose engineered cages in outdoor ponds, which are subject to constant monitoring to ensure fish are happy and healthy. it is quite the operation, and each market quite specific, so freezing is not the overriding solution. “But as with the rest of the business, the learning curve is always going to be there, and evolving is very much part of our mission statement.” This approach allowed Murray Cod Australia to remain positive after logistical issues during the recent bushfires impacted the marketing of their newest offering - smoked cod. With the Eden Smokehouse on the south coast of New South Wales effectively inaccessible, production of smoked cod was halted, and though back up and running now, with COVID-19 sales are not where they anticipated. “Once we’re through this current hurdle we’ll do a big re-launch, and as with everything Murray cod once people taste it they’re sold they absolutely fall in love with it,” Lynsey said. “A significant part of the company’s success is its education program. “Our willingness to partner with and build relationships with top quality distributors and high end

“Prior to COVID-19 our main export market was Japan and Singapore, and we were gaining traction in the United States, and had just launched in the UK and Europe,” Lynsey said. “Previously all our export was fresh - out of the water, processed straight away, and then air-freighted out from our Bilbul farm to market. “But with air freight effectively shut down, or costs absolutely prohibitive, at the moment it’s next to impossible to get our fish to overseas market. “Export is also order-driven, as different countries have quite specific demands for particular types of fish. “So in Japan we were experiencing demand for some of the larger three kilogram cod to be used for sashimi and sushi at high end restaurants - a testament in itself to the superior eating quality of this incredible fish. “Other Asian markets prefer smaller 700 to 800 gram fish - the perfect plate size for consumers who want a whole fish. “Because of the way we farm we have the ability to separate out fish and grade them by demand, however,
restaurants ensures we get the word out. “And for export in particular, Murray cod has until recently been a relatively unknown fish.” Murray Cod Australia is changing that. With a proactive approach that sees the company tailor campaigns for each individual market segment and country, post COVID-19 Murray Cod Australia is positioned well for continued expansion. “We have the room and the desire to expand, with our ideal market split between export and domestic sales,” Lynsey said “We’ve spent years building up enthusiasm and excitement about the product. “This considered approach to building brand awareness has been years in the implementation, and it began when we didn’t really have a huge amount of fish to sell. “When we listed on the stock exchange, we only had a few ponds, and though we have expanded rapidly and continue to do so, we still need to grow fish. “It takes time to grow a Murray cod. “It’s been somewhat of a balancing act, going hard with promoting the product yet not wanting to overreach so that we can’t meet demand. “Right here, right now though we have upwards of two million fish in the water. “So we have the brand recognition, and now the fish as well.” Combined with a business model that prioritises sustainability, innovation and staff welfare, Murray Cod Australia are perfectly poised to implement their vision for the aquaculture industry, and in doing so become an influential player on the international stage - a force for change.

NATIVE POLLINATOR: Attracting pollinators to productive gardens is the goal. The project is about beneficial insects, including bees. Trial participant Simone Boyd strongly believes good insects of all sorts are welcome on her farm.
Bee active this winter
A TRIAL is under way to increase knowledge and understanding of pollinators and ways to attract them to productive gardens using indigenous flowering plants. Up2Us Landcare Alliance, as part of the From the Ground Up project supported by Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority, is trialling ways to increase the number of pollinators in the garden for more efficient and effective production. The trial will involve working with a Mansfield organic vegetable gardener to plant different native plants, such as common fringe-myrtle and purple coral-pea, strategically around the landowner’s vegetable plot.
The landholder is also using this opportunity to diversify her income by selling native flowers as well as vegetables. Goulburn Broken CMA’s Kerstie Lee said growing food required pollinators, and pollinators ranged from the European honeybee to other species including native bees, wasps, flies, beetles and moths. “We’re really interested to know how to attract pollinators to productive vegetable and fruit gardens all year round, she said. “Whether it’s a small backyard garden plot or a large productive vegetable garden, all food plants need to be pollinated.
“It’s a really timely trial as people are more interested than ever before in growing their own food, especially fruit and vegetables, and this is the best time of the year to start planting for pollinators. Findings from the trial will be shared with interested growers. The From the Ground Up project is supported by the Goulburn Broken CMA through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program. For more information about the project and integrating native vegetation into productive areas, please contact Kerstie Lee on kerstiel@gbcma.vic.gov.au or 0437 310 840.

Brumbies reprieve from slaughter By ASHLEIGH PILES PARKS Victoria will delay its cull of brumbies in the Alpine area until winter after brumby supporters sought an injunction in the Supreme Court last week. Last Monday’s late announcement is the latest move in a two-year battle between Parks Victoria and those who want to see the brumbies protected on the grounds of heritage value. Omeo-based Mountain Cattleman Philip Maguire convinced the State Government to refrain from commencing its shooting program until at least June 1 with his last-minute plea on Sunday night. Mr Maguire told the government he would like to see the brumbies added to the Alpine Heritage List and managed humanely, including the rehoming of populations becoming excessive. A group of cattlemen and women embarked on a brumby-saving mission last Thursday in an attempt to muster as many of them onto Mr Maguire’s property before culling begins. Earlier this month, the Federal Court ruled in favour of shooting the brumbies to protect the Alpine National Park’s native flora and fauna. The case returned to court yesterday.
SAFE, FOR NOW: The brumby population in the Alpine National Park has been saved from slaughter with Parks Victoria agreeing to halt their shooting plans until at least winter. PHOTO: Donna Crebbin President of the Mountain Cattlemen’s Association of Victoria (MCAV) Bruce McCormack said a return to traditional brumby control is needed to ensure their population is managed humanely. “This is an issue that strikes at the heart of every Australian,” he said. “As a country, we iden-
tify with the brumby and the folklore attached to them. “People are disgusted that Parks Victoria has been given the green light to shoot a piece of Australia’s living heritage.” Mr McCormack recognized brumby numbers have become overwhelming since Cattlemen were removed from their grazing runs but
said: “We certainly do not agree with mindlessly heading out and shooting them”. The MCAV has recommended a three-pronged approach to brumby management as well as rehoming them according to condition, sex and age. “We believe brumbies should remain in genetically sustainable numbers in the
High Country,” Mr McCormack said. “There should be a balance struck between best land management practices as recommended by Cattlemen and brumby numbers. “We need to remember these horses are a national icon, a tourism attraction and a piece of living history.” It is believed there are
about 300 deer for every brumby across the High Country. The Bogong brumbies are descended from horses bred on the Bogong High Plains by the McNamara and Young families for the Waler trade. The families used to graze up to 3000 head on the Bogongs and muster up about 600 every year.

More support for smoke affected winemakers, grape growers
VICTORIAN winemakers and wine grape growers affected by the recent summer bushfires will be given acesss to expert support and technical advice to help them make decisions about their current vintage, under a new State Government program. Minister for Agriculture, Jaclyn Symes, last Friday announced $990,000 to support the program - delivered in partnership with Wine Victoria - that will help winemakers assess and remediate the effects of smoke exposure on wines being made from this year’s harvest. Ms Symes said the program will include online technical workshops on recognising and addressing the effects of smoke exposure,
ISOBUS compatibility Weed mapping Section control
A steering committee made up of the Victorian Government, Wine Victoria and representatives from affected wine regions will oversee the program, which will be rolled out immediately and run until September 2021. Committee members will include representatives from the North East, Gippsland, Central Victoria, the Yarra Valley and Mornington. The State Government has already announced $1.2 million for the Wine Grape Testing Rebate Program, which provides growers with up to $1200 for smoke-exposure testing. The rebate program remains open to eligible growers through Rural Finance.

The program will also include winemaking trials to evaluate techniques for treating smoke-affected wines and research activities to better characterise the impacts of smoke on a range of locally important varieties. “Advice from industry suggests that smoke exposure was thankfully not as widespread as first thought, but we want to make sure winemakers can be sure they’re offering the best possible product to Victoria and the world,” Ms Symes said.

Nuseed and Barenbrug enter into collaborative agreement NUSEED Pty Ltd (“Nuseed Australia”), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Nufarm Limited, and Barenbrug Australia Pty Ltd have announced early May that they had entered into a formal agreement for Barenbrug Australia to license Nuseed Australia’s sorghum and sunflower germplasm and conduct plant breeding, research and development, and commercialisation services. This announcement demonstrates Nuseed Australia’s prioritisation and focus on its market-leading position in the Australian canola and monola markets, and its ongoing Australian research and development commitments as the global commercialisation partner for CSIRO and GRDC for Nuseed Omega-3 canola. The collaboration aligns strongly with Barenbrug’s strategic objective of continuing to invest in agriculture in northern Australia, which includes investing in infrastructure, capability, and research and development. Barenbrug has recently made significant investments in capability and infrastructure evidenced by
STRONG COMMITMENT: Barenbrug’s Australian managing director Toby Brown is positive about continued investment in Australian agricultural. growing their team to 106 across its Australian locations as well as investing in its new state-of-the-art facility in Toowoomba, Queensland. Starting July 1, all Australian-based Nuseed grain sorghum, forage sorghum and sunflower plant breeding,
research and development, sales and distribution will be licensed to Barenbrug. Australian growers will still have access to the same Nuseed products, just now they will be sold under the Barenbrug brand. Barenbrug’s Australian managing director Toby

EXTENDING THE PORTFOLIO: Travis Rankin, Nuseed’s general manager, is excited about the opportunities the merger will bring. Brown said “this agreement reinforces Barenbrug’s commitment to investing in R&D in Australian agriculture”. “We have an extensive program focused on innovation in Australia, and we look forward to developing new products and tools for sorghum and sunflower
growers,” Mr Brown said. It represents an exciting next step following the recent opening of our new, state-of-the-art warehouse and seed-coating facility in Toowoomba as part of our ongoing investment in northern Australia. “Barenbrug looks forward
to working with Nuseed to continue driving the breeding program forward, with the objective of providing new and existing hybrids to sorghum and sunflower growers.” Travis Rankin, Nuseed Australia’s general manager, said that Barenbrug is in a strong position to bring Australian farmers an exciting suite of next-generation hybrids from the genetics currently in the Nuseed pipeline. Nuseed and Barenbrug are committed to a smooth transition and continued collaboration through: z uninterrupted supply of high-quality seed; z maximising Nuseed’s global sorghum and sunflower germplasm to create advanced hybrids for Australian growers; z seamless continuation of breeding activities and transition of Nuseed’s summer crop plant breeding capabilities to the Barenbrug team; and z engaging with existing stakeholders from both organisations to ensure a smooth transition and service delivery.

THE Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) is calling on the Victorian and Australian governments to develop an Agriculture Investment Strategy that will incentivise Australian superannuation funds to invest in our ‘bulletproof’ agriculture industry. VFF president David Jochinke said COVID-19 has highlighted the need to rebalance our investment strategies including for foreign interest in agriculture. “VFF, government and super funds should work together on an Agricultural Investment Strategy that turbocharges super fund investment in Victorian farms and the agriculture supply chain more broadly, Mr Jochinke said. Colliers International Agribusiness Research and Forecast Report for 2020 found the agricultural sector to be a strong investment option for those seeking long term returns and portfolio diversification.
It stated: “We know that demand for food will never cease which provides a bullet-proof scenario for the agribusiness sector, supports its long-term financial sustainability, and positions the sector as a key driver of the recovery process for society and the economy. Victoria is the second largest farmland investment market in Australia. Sales volumes last year alone reached $1.2 billion. According to Colliers International, there has been a surge in global investment players into Australian agribusiness, particularly American and Canadian investment funds. Mr Jochinke said a recent Federal Parliamentary Inquiry estimated that Aussie superfunds have invested around $1.8 billion or 0.2 per cent in agriculture. “There is a real investment opportunity, with the right policy settings, to

Australian Whites shine in carcass competitions Australian White Sheep offer better products for the consumer and the producer. AUSTRALIAN Whites crossed over a prime lamb producing ewe make an excellent choice for exceptional growth rate and carcass conformation, with eating qualities enhanced by having fat with a low melting point, high in omega 3. The prime lamb industry is a function of feed, breed and growth rate.
In the lean seasons of drought and poor pasture, available feed is important but a shortened season breed and growth rate are essential. If you run Dorpers which are renowned as being slow to reach carcass weight you can suffer in the saleyards by getting a lower price. In a short season or if you’re lambing in the spring
you want growth rate, and that comes with selecting the right breed. Lamb has been reclassified and is now allowed to have its second teeth. This allows the breeder to have carcass weight of up to 35 kilograms which are mainly sold for export as second tooth lambs. Breed is important be-
cause you also do not want your lambs to be carrying excessive fat particularly over the eye muscle. Fat, however, is important for the preservation of the carcass and marbling is important for cooking and flavour, so a good balance of meat to fat is essential. The photos show lamb chop A which is from an Austral-
ian White, in comparison with lamb chop B which is not. The chops are dissected and weighed: Chop A 118 Grams - Meat 80 Grams Bone 18 Grams Fat 20 Grams; Chop B 104 Grams - Meat 48 Grams Bone 16 Grams Fat 40 Grams. Chop A has 67.79 per cent meat 16 per cent fat.
If purchased at $29 per Kg $42.77 for meat value per Kg; Chop B has 46.15 per cent meat 38 per cent fat. If purchased at $29 per Kg $62.83 for meat value per Kg. Comparing chop A with chop B, chop B becomes more expensive for meat purchased as the fat portion of chop A is 16 per cent as opposed to chop B is 38 per cent.

Making the most of winter with Liquid Foliar Fertiliser WE hope everyone is finding their way through these times and as we are obviously an essential service we press on. Don’t forget to check out the video of our $2500 Bonsai giveaway for “Buy a Bale” on our Facebook page. Liquid Soil and Foliar applications are the most efficient tools available to stimulate pasture and crops in winter where adequate soil moisture is available but the low temperature slows the energy supply. In general terms for every 10 degrees Celsius drop of temperature, the rate of biological/ enzymatic reaction is halved. However, there are a few ways to stimulate growth in winter.
Two of these include the following: 1. Foliar uptake: Foliar versus soil uptake helps plant growth in winter for two reasons. Firstly, uptake efficiency of soil applied nutrients is much lower than foliar; this is due to a greater dilution of fertiliser in soil as well as slower uptake by the root system due to cold weather. Secondly, foliar uptake uses less energy than soil uptake per unit of nutrient; this is because when a nutrient is taken from the soil, energy is used on its uptake at two distinct points. Foliar uptake in contrast only uses energy once when ions are taken up from leaf
free space into leaf cells. 2. Phosphate and Nitrogen in foliar spray is essential to benefit from Integrated Fertiliser Management (IFM): It has been shown that when foliar phosphate is applied especially in sunlight, the root system develops pockets of activity that are otherwise absent, these pockets exude hydrogen ion (by proton pumping) and organic acids to mobilise tied up soil nutrients. To learn more about foliar feeding and to receive information on the full range of Healthy Earth Foliar applications please contact Bayley on 0420 946 156 or email Bayley@goodeorganics.com.au.

Trace mineral deficiency in lambs RECENT rain has prompted Agriculture Victoria to issue a reminder to sheep producers about the potential for trace mineral deficiency diseases to effect their lambs this year. Agriculture Victoria senior veterinary officer Dr Robert Suter, said the early season rain that has been welcomed by producers across the state should result in good pasture growth throughout the winter. However, the flush of new pasture increases the likelihood of trace mineral deficiency diseases in lambs born in winter and early spring. Dr Suter said trace mineral deficiencies can result from ewes grazing lush green feed during the last half of their pregnancy. “These ewes are likely to have lambs with low or deficient levels of trace minerals selenium, copper, iodine and cobalt,” he said. “Sheep ingest several essential trace minerals from soil intake. “This usually occurs when ewes graze short pastures after a dry summer and before the autumn break. “When there is a lot of early season pasture growth, the intake of trace minerals via the soil is less likely to occur.” Growing animals, such as lambs, also have a higher
HEALTH OF THE MOTHER: Lush green feed can be detrimental to ewes in late pregnancy, depriving the foetus of essential trace minerals contained in the soil. demand for trace minerals than adult sheep and are likely to suffer a dietary deficiency sooner. Dr Suter said trace minerals such as copper, cobalt, selenium and iodine are only required in small amounts but are still essential for optimal production, and for life. The signs of deficiency vary according to the mineral involved: z Copper deficiency pre-
BBF
sents most dramatically as enzootic ataxia (or ‘swayback’), a condition causing paralysis of the hind limbs of newborn or very young lambs. Less apparent signs include steely wool, anaemia and reproductive loss in older sheep. z Cobalt deficiency is an ill-thrift disease of reduced appetite and growth, decreased wool production, anaemia and poor repro-
ductive performance. Affected animals often have ‘white liver’ disease. Diagnosis is based on vitamin B12 levels (vitamin B12 contains cobalt), and treatment is with vitamin B12. z Selenium deficiency causes ‘white muscle’ disease with white lesions in the red skeletal and cardiac muscle tissue, leading to lameness or sudden death. Ill-thrift, reduced wool growth and ewe infertility
are also reported signs of deficiency. z Iodine deficiency results in an enlarged thyroid gland, known as ‘goitre’ in lambs. There are effects on the developing foetus including reduced foetal size, brain retardation and increased lamb mortality. Dr Suter said sheep producers in known deficient areas should review their trace mineral supplement
strategies to ensure ewes have adequate levels to produce healthy lambs. “Most of Victoria is iodine deficient; and an appropriate time to supplement ewes is mid-pregnancy,” Dr Suter said. “A good time to do this is at pregnancy scanning. “Special care must be taken with supplementing ewes with copper, as sheep can be easily killed with relatively small amounts of copper.”

NFF disappointed at punitive tariffs imposed by China THE National Farmers’ Federation is frustrated and deeply concerned with China’s decision to impose punitive tariffs on Australian barley effective immediately. The announcement comes following an antidumping and countervailing subsidy investigation established by the People’s Republic of China initiated in November 2018. Australian barley will now face a dumping margin of up to 73.6 per cent and a subsidy margin of up to 6.9 per cent when entering China. NFF chief executive officer Tony Mahar said the new duties would make exporting barley to China very difficult, to say the least. “This is a massive blow to Australian grain growers, who are right now nearing the end of their winter planting,” Mr Mahar said. “China is Australia’s largest barley market, almost 50 per cent of our barley worth about $917 million is exported to China each year. “The new tariffs will significantly curtail, and most likely stop, exports of Australian barley to China by artificially increasing the

dised in the world,” Mr Mahar said. “They operate in a free and competitive global market. “The idea that Australian barley has been ‘dumped’ in China doesn’t match the realities of Australian grain production. “Export sales are made at prices above the purchase value offered to farmers, which in turn surpasses
their cost of production. “This issue has been under consideration for 18 months. “Australia respected China’s decision to launch the investigation and engaged in good faith with MOFCOM on the process. “Organisations across the entire spectrum of Australia’s supply chain made submissions that included detailed data around export

and domestic sales programs, company ownership and operational structures. “It’s very disappointing that despite the details in the comprehensive submissions provided by Australia, China has decided to impose these punitive duties.” Mr Mahar said Australia must now dispute the issue at the World Trade Organisation to the ‘fullest extent possible’, a course of action

that would unfortunately take many years before an outcome could be reached. “In the interim it is absolutely crucial that the Australian Government continues to seek to address this issue through diplomatic channels with their Chinese counterparts,” Mr Mahar said. “More than two thirds of Australia’s agricultural production is exported, and up to 30 per cent of that goes to China. “Our relationship with China has gone from strength to strength since the coming into force of ChAFTA in 2015. “China is an important market for Australian wool, red meat, cotton, dairy, wine, horticulture and seafood. “Australia’s barley trade relationship with China goes back to the 1960s. “It is the NFF’s strong hope that a resolution that is satisfactory to both parties can be reached sooner rather than later, to avoid unnecessary detriment to Australian farmers and Chinese consumers - who value our barley.”

32 WARBY STREET, WANGARATTA

We have been seeing a run of laminitis (also known as founder) in horses lately. Most of these have been ponies, who are particularly susceptible. Laminitis is a painful condition affecting horses’ feet. In worst cases it may result in permanent lameness or euthanasia, but fortunately can usually be prevented with good management. Laminitis literally means inflammation of the laminae, which are tiny folded soft tissue connections between the pedal bone and the hoof. There isn’t a lot of space between the bone and the hoof, so when the laminae are inflamed there may be an interruption to the blood supply, and degradation of the attachments. This can cause the pedal bone to rotate or drop downwards towards the sole of the hoof. The causes of laminitis are not entirely
understood, but there are a number of risk factors. These include ponies, being overweight, access to excessive carbohydrates (lush pasture, grain or pellets), systemic infection (“blood poisoning), severe colic or enteritis, retained placenta, trauma to the soles of the hooves, and excessive weight bearing on one limb (due to lameness in another limb). Signs of laminitis include: reluctance to walk, rocking back on hooves, weight shifting from one leg to another, lying down, increased pulses above the hoofs, and pain on hoof testers. One or more limbs may be affected, and forelimbs are more commonly affected than hindlimbs. Treatment includes anti-inflammatory medication, corrective trimming/shoeing, sole support with special pads or styrofoam, and housing on soft surfaces eg sand. Any
underlying causes should also be treated. Ponies who have had laminitis in the past are prone to reoccurrences. Some individuals will develop an ongoing low grade laminitis known as chronic founder. These ponies will often have visual changes in the hoof such as rings in the wall, a widening of the “white line between the hoof wall and the sole, dropped soles, and dished hooves. Prevention of laminitis includes restricting access to excessive feed, especially during times of rapid pasture growth, particularly during the middle of the day when plant sugars are highest, regular exercise, keeping a lean body condition, ensuring regular farrier visits and hoof care, and making sure any changes in diet are done gradually.
