itsubishi Pajero is an important vehicle in the history of 4WDs in Australia. Prior to the Mitsubishi’s launch in the early 1980s buyers could choose between a 4WD that was truck-like, or find a lot more money and go for a very expensive Range Rover. Now, Mitsubishi Pajero has been updated for the 2014 model year and Australians, who have bought it in the tens of thousands have an even better vehicle. For the 2014 season there’s a big emphasis on safety, with luxury items also
being added and/or upgraded. Mitsubishi’s Link in the GLX and GLX-R provides voice controlled Bluetooth 2.0 with steering wheel controls, mobile handsfree and wireless audio streaming making it easier and safer to conduct business or enjoy some downtime in the Pajero. The VRX and Exceed receive the addition of the Mitsubishi Multi Communications System (MMCS incorporating 3D based satellite navigation) and rear-parking sensors.

Next up the luxury line, the Mitsubishi Pajero GLX-R also gets color-coded door mirrors and door handles; a rear tailgate spoiler; integrated side steps and front mudguards; front foglamps and black door sash detail. Subaru Liberty changes are all simply done well BY DEREK OGDEN
T
he in-dash push button engine start / stop is becoming an automotive affectation. Originally it was fitted to unique racing cars and their highly tuned road-going derivatives.
These days it is increasingly finding its way into vehicles of all brands and price tags. Ironically, such a system will not work without the proximity of a computer controlled key fob, all of which requires more effort than simply slotting the key into the ignition and starting the motor. Sundry stressful situations tracking down the key, from pocket to centre console, were put behind me with the new Subaru Liberty 2.5 sedan – keyless entry but buttonless start-up. How good is that? Not that there is anything yesterday about the car. For a start (or in this case stop) there’s an electric parking brake situated on a reworked centre console, a onetouch lane-change indicator, revised instrument panel, dashboard color scheme and USB connection The new generation horizontallyopposed boxer engine is linked to the latest Lineartronic continuously variable transmission and a revised Subaru symmetrical all-wheel-drive system. The CVT has a six-speed manual mode with steering wheel-mounted paddles. Subaru engineers have waved a magic wand over the 2.5-litre motor to gain major improvements – power is up by three per cent (127 kW), torque by 3.3 pc (235 Nm), while fuel economy is cut by 4.8 pc (7.9 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined urban/highway cycle) and carbon dioxide emissions are down 5.7

Much attention was paid to the drivability of the vehicle in the mid-tolow speed torque range, while the new Lineartronic CVT is quieter, lighter and more compact. Handling and stability have been given a fillip through revision of the all-wheeldrive system, stiffening of the suspension and a sharpened steering response. Noise vibration and harshness also comes in for improvement with changes in the construction of suspension systems. The one-time shrinking violet looks of the Liberty have made way for a more assertive character thanks to a new grille and front fog light surrounds, plus modern alloy wheel designs. It’s no surprise that the Liberty test car took to local conditions admirably, Australia had input here with tests being conducted Down Under.
The CVT has taken the car to a new level of fuss-free driving. The paddle-shift manual mode is competent but adds little to the overall driving experience for those wanting a little more action. Our test car carried an option pack which includes leather upholstery, satellite navigation and new color info display adding $3000 to the price, the sat nav sporting a particularly clear on-screen street naming, which was most welcome for this gentleman of a certain age. Among the crop of changes to the MY13 range, the most pleasing economy for the new Liberty is a $2000 trim in price, putting the entry level model at just $32,990. The Subaru Liberty has always maintained a spot at the heart of middleof-the-road motoring. The latest incarnation looks to be in no mood to relinquish its position.

Reliable Mitsubishi Lancer 1995-2012 BY EWAN KENNEDY
M
itsubishi Lancer is a small to medium Japanese car designed and made to a high quality, making it one of the leaders in the reliability stakes. Aimed at the conservative buyer rather than the one looking for excitement Lancer is usually driven gently and maintained correctly. Which explains why it’s well-regarded on the used-car scene. However, the Lancer MR coupe of 1997 to 2004 is a popular choice with sporting drivers due to its firmer suspension and sharper steering. If you do want real excitement, the ultra-hot Lancer Ralliart and Lancer Evolution (Evo) models provide stunning performance, but cost big bucks. (We won’t cover them in this used-car feature as they are from a totally different market segment.) The Lancer grew larger with each new model and from October 2007 is comfortably into the medium segment so can be used as a family car if the kids aren’t yet into their hulking teenage years. Interior space is good in the front seats in all models. Rear seat headroom can be tight in the older hatches, but is generally fine

in the sedans and wagons due to their extended rooflines. Lancer comes in a big variety of body types: two-door coupes, three-door hatches, four-door sedans, five-door hatchbacks and five-door station wagons. Not all bodies were on offer at all times. Three-door hatches prior to 1996 were called Lancers, but the name was changed to Mirage with the introduction of the new model of that year. Mirage shares most of its out-of-sight parts with Lancer, the name change simply being there to try and create a new market niche for the three-door. Imports of the Lancer-based Mirage ceased in 2004 although the name returned in 2013 but in an unrelated small hatch. Ride comfort in the standard Lancers
is generally good, though rough Australian backroads can sometimes thump them about. Engines are all four-cylinder units and come with a big spread of capacities ranging from 1.5, 1.8, 2.0 and finally 2.4 litres. The marketing strategy saw the largest engine at any one time being introduced in the upmarket models, then gradually making its way down the line. The 2.4-litre powerplant has plenty of torque, giving the car excellent performance and safe overtaking, yet it doesn’t use a lot more fuel than the other engines. Manual gearboxes are all five-speed units. Automatic transmissions on most older models were three-speed units until 1996, and had four-speeds from then. The auto with the 2.4-litre remains
a four-speeder, but tiptronic functions give it increased usefulness if the driver is keen on squeezing a little more out of the engine. Spare parts and repair prices are about average for this class and the Australian Mitsubishi dealer network is widespread and efficient. The Lancer is relatively easy for the home mechanic to work on, with good underbonnet space and nothing particularly tricky in its layout. Insurance charges are about average for the class, though you will often be asked to pay considerably more for the hot turbocharged GSR. Though Mitsubishi has pulled out of local manufacture the company continues to operate as a major player here, now exclusively with imported cars. Lancer is at the vanguard of the new Mitsubishi Australia.
Helpful guide for those in the market for used cars THE Used Car Safety Ratings Guide for 2013 is now available for motorists. The UCSR Guide is a collaborative effort to drive down the road toll by VicRoads, the Transport Accident Commission (TAC), the Royal Automotive Club of Victoria (RACV) and the Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC). MUARC senior research fellow Stuart Newstead, who led the study, said the difference in the risk of death or serious injury in a crash between the worst and the best rated cars was more than nine times for vehicles built from 1996 onwards. “Overall there are 109 vehicles in the ‘excellent’ or ‘good’ category, and 74 in the ‘poor’ or ‘very poor’. The best is the medium car category with 13 vehicles receiving the top rating for driver protection in a crash,” Dr Newstead said. “What’s more, of these 13, six are rated as a ‘Safe Pick’, meaning they are less aggressive to other road users, including pedestrians and cyclists, and are available with electronic stability control (ESC) – a proven crash avoidance technology. “The small car category has seven vehicles in the top rating group, and six of them are ‘Safe Picks’, including the Holden Cruze and Mazda3, both built from 2006 to 2011. “It is also pleasing to see the 2003-09 Toyota Prius rated a top performer and a ‘Safe Pick’, showing you do not need to trade-off excellent safety features for environmental performance.” RACV manager of vehicle engineering, Michael Case, said that late model Australianmanufactured vehicles were the stand-outs including the Ford Falcon, Ford Territory, Commodore Ute and Holden Statesman/Caprice. “The vast majority of ‘Safe Pick’ cars were manufactured from 2001 onwards showing the benefits of newer vehicles, in terms of more safety equipment and better design to reduce harm to pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists in collisions,” Mr Case said. “Local manufacturers have demonstrated they can build a vehicle with occupant protection equal to the best overseas designs. The Ford Falcon, Toyota Aurion and Holden Cruze are Australian built vehicles rated as five star ‘Safe Picks’ in the 2013 ratings. “Industry wide there is much more thought and emphasis placed on engineering all-round safety, than ever before.” The UCSR Guide is available at www. howsafeisyourcar.com.au.

T
he word ‘redline’ in motorsport refers to an engine spinning at its maximum revs, or drivers pushing themselves and their machines to the limit. Holden has used the Redline tag before, but never in a car like the track-ready VF Commodore SS-V Redline. Though a 6.0-litre V8 engine capable of delivering up to 270 kilowatts of power and 530 Newton metres of torque is the first thing enthusiasts want to talk about, the really clever things in this car are the suspension and steering, not to forget trick electronics that further improve the driving experience. For those who want to get really serious and take their cars to the track the VF Commodore Redline has a Competitive Mode. This has selectable settings

Redlines with manual transmission gain launch control, to maximise take-off when Competitive Mode is selected. In true race-car fashion the Commodore Redline has wider wheels and tyres at the rear
stopping power. There’s a steering calibration that’s unique to this model, as well as track tune to enhance feedback during high lateral cornering. The chassis set-up includes new spring and damper tunes, front and rear; larger stabiliser bars and stiffened bushes. Larger front and rear

Holden builds the SS-V Redline in all three body styles; sedan, station wagon and utility; being well aware that highperformance Aussie drivers like to be able to drive hard and fast in anything they get into.
