By KYLIE WILSON FOR over a century, Mt Buffalo, and the imposing chalet perched atop the mountain, has truly lived up to its name as an “island in the sky” for holidaymakers. But in the wake of the chalet closing its doors, and bushfire damage in the area in the past few years, concern has been expressed about the future of tourism in the area. And while plans for a day visitor facility at the chalet site have been announced, longtime resident and former park chief ranger Bob Adams believes more needs to be done to raise the tourism profile of the mountain. He laments the days during the 1980s when the mountain was a bustling centre of tourist activity, but says there’s been little encouragement for people to go there since Tatra Inn and Cresta Day Visitor complexes were destroyed by a management controlled fire in 2006. “To date, that facility has not been restored, although an insurance payout of $6.4 million was received by the State Government in September, 2007,” Mr Adams said. That funding is been channelled into works to help re-open Mt Buffalo Chalet as a day centre next year, but Mr Adams hopes the government and investors can recognise the value of improving tourism facilities on the mountain, especially for the local businesses that used to rely on the year round benefit it brought to the Ovens Valley. continued page |

YOUR HEALTH

The perfect poo
Summer bulbs research
POO is a perfectly natural by-product of digestion. Touch the tip of your thumb together with the tip of the pointer finger to make the AOK sign. This is how wide your poo will be when you are having enough plant based fibre. An everyday stool is essential. Your body has an inside temperature of 37 degrees. Food that does not clear daily from the bowels will ferment at this temperature causing bloating, unnatural gas, irritable bowels and pre-cancerous conditions of the colon. Dr Hiromi Shinya (see on YouTube), work expert and inventor of the colonoscopy, shows us in a video not for the faint-hearted that our bowel conditions are mostly a direct result of our food and drink choices. Here are the naturopath’s top five tips for better bowel health: 1. On Dr Shinya’s advice, an 85 per cent plant based diet of wholegrains, legumes, beans, fruit and vegetables with less meat and dairy and the addition of quality alkaline water creates a pristine bowel environment. 2. For soft, smooth and easy to pass stools increase

your water and consider alkaline water for additional cleansing and protection. 3. Avoid laxatives. They irritate and blacken your inner bowel linings. Change your food and drink choices instead. 4. For an easier to pass stool, soak flaxseeds and chia seeds (a tablespoon of each) in a little water overnight and add slippery elm bark powder
to your breakfast. 5. Flour constipates, especially white flour. Eat wholegrains with the outer husk on such as whole oats, brown rice, natural muesli. Don’t be afraid to look at your poo to see how well your digestion behaved. Seek help if needed and email us for recipes for yummy brown rice breakfasts too.
ON these cold and grey winter days, warm yourself up by thinking ahead to summer. As the first of the spring flowering bulbs, like daffodils and jonquils, start to poke their heads up, extend your flower display by planting some summer flowering bulbs. Many varieties flower late into autumn, so you can have a colorful garden from late winter through to autumn by planting a mixture of spring and summer flowering bulbs. The bulbs are available from garden centres or by mail order and can be planted now through to early spring while they are still dormant. They come in an expansive range of flower shapes, colors and fragrances perfect for filling any gaps in your garden. Most summer bulbs are drought tolerant and require little watering, although drainage is important as many bulbs will rot in waterlogged soils, especially when dormant in the cooler months. Improve the soil by digging in sand or plant the bulbs in raised garden beds to aid drainage. One of summers’ favorite flowers is the gladioli, synonymous with Dame Edna Everidge. Gladioli have flowers on spikes growing from half a metre to up to two metres tall, depending on the variety. The colors vary from bright, bold

colors to soft pastels. Another tall growing bulb is Cannas with the tallest reaching over three metres. Shorter growing varieties grow from 70cm to two metres. Cannas have bold, colorful flowers on lush, often colored foliage and are long flowering from mid-spring through to mid-autumn. Iris feature showy flowers on tall stems above fans of dense leaves from late winter through to late summer. The flowers are either bearded, beardless, or crested and come in every colour of the rainbow. Liliums flower on tall stems in a range of colors from white, through to yellow, pink, orange and red from November through to the end of summer with many scented. For the ponds, try a couple of summer flowering waterlilies. Summer flowering bulbs need little care, add dramatic color to a garden and thrive when other plants are feeling the effects of the hot summer. Happy gardening.

Soft tissue sarcomas
FAMILIAR SPOT: Mt Buffalo Chalet is an iconic landmark in the alpine region.
“The government has just shut their ears to the public, and I’m not the only one frustrated with it all,” he said. Beechworth resident, and selfproclaimed tourism activist Christine Stewart, shares the disappointment of the demise of the family mountain, which was the first snow experience of thousands across the region. She said creating better and lasting facilities on the mountain is not just a matter of attracting visitors, but the mountain needs to be able to accommodate for emergency services, so that it remains a key strategic area during times of emergency such as bushfires. Mr Stewart admits that while some costs are prohibitive for governments and investors, there are still options, including having a restaurant or other dining facilities on the mountain, or even a museum or eco-tourism facility. “People will come if there’s good coffee or good food,” she said. “It’s got enormous potential. “The government’s got to meet the people halfway.” Alpine Shire mayor, Cr Peter Roper, is also keen to see a return to tourism on Mt Buffalo. “It is a tourism resource, as well as

being a park,” Cr Roper said. He said there was much potential for tourism growth on the mountain, suggesting a sky platform, and improved access and trails could all be of benefit to local tourism. And Cr Roper said the shire is keen to get involved in tourism projects in the area. “Our role is to help make something happen,” he said. “Every time I go, I’m blown away by what’s actually up there. “We’re working with the State Government to get something to happen.”

SOFT tissue sarcomas (STS’s) are a group of malignant tumors that arise from the connective tissues in the body. Connective tissues are the tissues that surround the muscles, nerves, bones and subcutis and hold everything together. There are various connective tissues in the body, and as a result various types of soft tissue sarcomas can arise. Further to this, these sarcomas can be of different grade, which defines how fast they grow and how they act biologically. By definition, soft tissue sarcomas are malignant tumors and therefore are quite a serious illness. STS’s tend to be locally invasive, but do not readily metastasise (spread to distant sites in the body). Higher grade variants however can spread to the lungs or local lymph nodes. Their invasiveness makes them more difficult to deal with surgically as microscopically they can send tentacles of cancerous tissue beyond the boundaries visible to the naked eye. As a result of this a wide surgical margin (generally 2-3cm) is necessary to completely excise the tumor. Failure to remove all the cancerous tissue often leads to rapid regrowth of the tumor in its original site. STS’s tend to arise relatively quickly and can grow quite rapidly once they are found. They usually present in the tissues just below the skin and therefore are seen as a bulge in the skin of variable size. In many cases the hair over the mass becomes thin or falls out completely. They can arise at any site on the body and their
location is very important in removal as some areas present a much greater surgical challenge to achieve a wide margin than others. Generally they are a firmish solid mass, but sometimes can feel like they contain areas of cystic fluid. Most dogs that develop a STS are of middle to older age. These tumors can generally be diagnosed by a fine needle biopsy while the dog is conscious. A surgical biopsy can be taken to determine their grade, however sometimes removal of a small piece of the tumor makes them grow more rapidly and the surgical removal becomes more time consuming and expensive. If your pet has a rapidly growing skin lump, it is important to have it checked sooner rather than later as the larger a mass becomes, the more difficult it will be to remove. Tooth hurty NOW I don’t mean to be a whinger, because I know dentists study long and hard to join their profession and it can’t be an easy life poking around in other people’s mouths every day, but really - when on earth are we going to get a health rebate system that includes dental work? I ask this because I’ve just been for my annual check up. Being something of a sweet tooth (well, rather a lot of a sweet tooth, actually) means I’ve had my fair share of dental work over the years. Which also means I’ve coughed up rather a small fortune for the privilege too. And, sadly, it is rather a privilege to have regular dental care these days. What, I wonder, do people who are even more fiscally challenged than me, do when their teeth need work? Which of their organs do they sell on Ebay? Yes, I know there are schemes for people on very low incomes, thank goodness. I hate to think of people suffering the agony of tooth ache or putting up with decaying teeth, so it’s important that our most vulnerable families are supported in this important area. But what about the rest of us, eking out an existence, paying our bills and trying to have a satisfying life? Where do we fit in this high-stakes game? I just don’t understand why dental is (apparently) not thought to be important enough to be included in the same suite of essential medical care as, say, a visit to a GP. Surely there is enough evidence these days to prove that poor dental health can lead to other health problems. Not to mention the embarrassment of missing teeth or bad breath caused through rotten teeth. Happily, I understand there are moves afoot to change the system to include dental, but why is it taking so long? I, for one, wouldn’t mind if my taxes increased a bit in order to include dentistry in the Medicare levy. I wish they’d just get on with it. At this rate, I’ll be pushing up daisies long before I ever get to pay a ‘subsidised’ fee for dentistry.
BY CATHERINE WARNOCK Which of course won’t be much help to my poor toothy little skeleton. Oh yes, I know I could take out private health cover. Provided I don’t want to do anything else in my life, like pay my other bills or even, heaven forbid, have some kind of social life. Not everyone can afford all of life’s ‘extras’. This week’s check up was a good illustration as to why dental care is becoming out of reach for everyday, working families. $194 for a check and clean. I like to have the professional clean because it (purportedly) helps keep the teeth and gums healthier for longer. Believe me, it’s not for the love of it. But I’d hate to be raising kids again and having to pay that kind of money for their dental care. We just couldn’t do it. Then my dentist suggested an x-ray might be in order. Something she apparently likes to do once every few years to check on any underlying problems in the gums. It sounded like a reasonable suggestion. “Oh yes,” I mumbled through her fingers. “And how much will that cost?” “Well, let’s see,” she said, whipping out her calculator, suggesting it was a pretty big number – well certainly one that required more than 10 fingers. She punched in a few thousand digits and announced it will cost me an extra $90 for the x-ray. “Uhh,” I tried to splutter, after doing a quick bit of addition. “Ah hink ah ill im uh a uus, ahhs” (which is dental-patient-speak for “I think I will give it a miss, thanks”). Fortunately, my dentist just smiled and said. “No problems!” And she didn’t even take the opportunity to give me an extra little stab with the drill for my dastardly dental negligence. At least I was rather pleased about that.

Boggy Creek
Red lentil, silverbeet and tomato soup
2012 Dry Rosé Around $20
WITH ANITA McPHERSON Boggy Creek Vineyards produce a Rosé which is blend of Barbera, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, and offers a fresh and enlightening dry Rosé experience. This beautiful, strawberrycolored wine has as pretty an aroma as you could hope for, filled with lightly spiced red currant, strawberry and a little thyme. But the flavor is deceptively strident and complex; a distinctly savory combo of Morello cherry and wild berry fruit with some black pepper spice. It’s an ideal Rosé for those who like it dry, and it is so refreshing served ice cold with savory food like pizza, pasta and antipasto. The trick is to never say never, and to find out more at www. boggycreekwines.com.au.
THIS DAY IN HISTORY
Beechworth trees, 1867 THE first serious attempt to plant shade trees along Beechworth streets seem to have been made by WT Soulby. He planted a number of English elms on both sides of a property at the corner of Camp and Finch Streets on July 24, 1867. There were 14 trees, planted 25 feet
apart, and they stretched over 200 feet along Camp Street, and a lesser distance along Finch Street. The trees were provided with protection against wandering stock of all species, and Soulby christened his finished work Elm Grove.
THIS is the time for hearty soups. This lentil and silverbeet soup is very versatile; add different vegetables you need to use up from your fridge. You may leave out the coriander if you don’t like it, but I find that it adds a lovely taste. Method Wash lentils in plenty of cold water. Place in a saucepan with 2.5 litres of water, bring to the boil and simmer for 35 minutes or so until soft, but not mush. Skim off any scum that rises to the service during cooking. Using a slotted spoon, remove about half the lentils from the cooking liquid and set aside in a bowl. Add a generous pinch of salt to the lentils and water in the pan, and

YOU are never too old to break the rules, so when faced with the need to refresh a “dry clean only” jacket, I threw caution to the wind and chucked it in the machine. Wild and impulsive I know, but this was no Swarovski crystalbeaded wedding dress; just an end-of-season jacket bought super cheap at a factory outlet. It seemed crazy to spend more for cleaning it than it was worth, and it turned out not only did the sky not fall in, but the jacket came out in tact and dried as good as new. While I was tempted to grizzle about years of wasted dry cleaning fees, I figured it was just that this time it had been a risk worth taking. For friends who were hesitant when it comes to buying Rosé, it was great to introduce them to a variety which can be vastly different, but is often an interesting taste sensation.
liquidise using a blender or food processor. Return the reserved lentils to the soup. Place a frying pan over a medium heat; add olive oil and onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for 4-5 minutes, until the onions soften and become translucent. Add the celery, silverbeet, garlic and chopped coriander stems, sauté until soft, add this mix to the lentils, then the spices and pepper to taste. Simmer gently for five minutes, then cover with a lid. Leave the soup to infuse for five minutes, and before serving, add a squeeze of lemon and a sprig of coriander to each bowl. Serve with crusty bread.

Funeral cover and you Get online,

REST IN PEACE: ASIC is moving to tackle any rorts in funeral insurance policies.
and here’s the carrot - a partial payout if the policy holder cancels their cover after more than five years. “All these things help to reduce the consumer hazard and we, as an industry, need to review these products so there is less consumer hazard,” Mr Minto said. InsuranceLine says its new products cut the cost of cover by up to 25 per cent. However, critics say the payouts from “flat” capped policies will be eroded by inflation and could fall short of future funeral expenses. The reforms by Real Insurance, owned by Hollard Financial Services, reduce premiums by as much as 64 per cent, according to ASIC. Hollard general manager John Roche said the biggest change has been significantly reducing the cost in the 70 to 80 age bracket when the consumers need increases but their incomes reduce. “Real believes that this, coupled with the freeze from age 80, provides

a product which addresses the key affordability issue,” he said. ASIC also made Real change potentially misleading advertising to explain that premiums could increase with age and a consumer could end up contributing a lot more than would be paid out - something I found with a policy I had and which has been a major criticism of funeral insurance. Consumer groups say people considering funeral cover may be better off opening a savings account and making regular deposits, especially if they are enjoying good health. A couple of issues I have is what happens if you happen to miss a payment along the line, even a couple of years ago - will this negate the policy? I strongly suggest you talk to your insurer to have this clarified. And I trust that the insurers will not be in the market of doing deals with funeral homes.

complete their tax return is at their fingertips. “Instead of having to wade through a lot of written information, links to practical YouTube videos will help speed things up and ease the burden,” said Mr Jordan. “When it comes to completing and lodging your return, e-tax, our free online service, is the easiest way. Last tax time 2.6 million people used e-tax. “It can automatically fill in some of the information for you and contains easy to use tools and calculators. “And finally there’s good news for patient Mac users - e-tax is now available. “It’s been a long time coming, but Mac users can now take advantage of this free online service. “We’ll continue to build on these services to deliver more contemporary services in a form the community expects.” There are a few changes this tax time the public need to be aware of. For the first time, you need to include details of your spouse’s income and provide a bank account for electronic payment of refunds. You have until October 31 to lodge your own return or register with a tax agent. For more information on completing tax returns, see the ATO website on ato.gov.au.

IT looks very likely the correspondence from ASIC (Australian Securities and Investment Commission) to the insurance industry about funeral cover is set to see major changes occurring. It would appear from my research that the days of funeral insurance rorts are numbered. No doubt you have been pestered lately with insurance salesmen trying desperately to sell you a policy. Under the old regime, your cost of cover increased with your age, and when you reached 80, the cost became prohibitive. InsuranceLine, owned by Tower Australia Limited, has 40 per cent of the market and Real Insurance has about a 20 per cent market share. The changes are estimated to bring down the cost of funeral cover for tens of thousands of policy holders, and for those who take out policies in the future. InsuranceLine’s revisions are expected to mirror the changes made by Real and will include premium reductions for those in their 70s and frozen premiums for those over 80. Jim Minto, CEO of Tower Australia Limited said they are making changes to to their existing products. InsuranceLine has already introduced new products with premiums that don’t increase with age, as well as caps on contributions
IT’S time for 12.4 million Australians to start lodging their income tax returns, and the ATO is offering improved services to help. “One of my first priorities is to deliver better, more contemporary services for the community,” said Tax Commissioner Chris Jordan. “This year we’re offering practical ways to make it easier for people to meet their obligations. “Doing business on mobile devices and online is nothing new and it’s what the community expects. “That’s why we’ve focused on delivering a mobile app, digital magazine and an improved website to help people this tax time.” The new app, ATO Tax 2013, is available free from the Apple Appstore and Google Play. It provides information on lodging your return, answers frequently asked questions and lets you monitor the progress of your return. Taxtime magazine is also available from app stores and provides an interactive online alternative to paper tax return instructions. The ATO’s website has a new look to make it easier for people to find what they’re looking for this tax time, and allows them to log on to online services to manage their tax and super information. “These products mean all the information people need to
