WHEN you cross the threshold into Christine Meunier’s Wangaratta home the first thing you see is a cheerful doormat decorated with pictures of horses. It’s hardly surprising as Christine, who has just published her first novel Horse Country - has had an affinity for horses for much of her life. And since the age of 14, her constant companion has been her cheeky, but faithful horse, Pride. He was so named because when he was younger he used to throw her off his back, so Pride “came before a fall”, Christine laughed. “He was very good at throwing me out of the saddle,” she said. “He’s very cantankerous, but he’s not mean or vicious.” Christine’s love of horses stems from their straightforward nature. “You’ll never stop learning about horses,” she said. “They’re all different, just like people. “They’ll never lie to you – if something’s bothering them, they will react. “There’s something very powerful about them.” Her early love of riding blossomed into a wish to make horses her career, and she moved to Wangaratta to do a diploma in horse breeding through Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE’s National Centre for Equine Education (NCEE). continued page |

They need a sunny spot with compost rich soil and good drainage. Prepare the planting area by digging in compost and aged manure, then water well and let it sit for a couple of weeks before planting. Nurseries and garden centres stock certified, disease free seed, sweet potatoes or you can grow them from organic tubers as some store bought tubers have been sprayed to prevent them from sprouting. Cut the sprouting potato into sections, each with its own shoot, and then plant them about 30 centimetres apart, with the shoot exposed, in raised mounds to aid drainage. Once the foliage appears they need little watering, except in dry periods. Avoid using fertilisers high in nitrogen as this encourages lush foliage growth but not many tubers. Sweet potatoes are ready to harvest when the leaves fade to yellow. They store well in the ground, so just dig up when needed. Happy gardening.

DIETARY changes are some of the hardest habits to break. Commonly, we see clients change everything in their diet and lifestyle only to find after a few weeks it all becomes too hard and they revert back to old habits. Try making sustainable lifelong changes to your diet through swapping commonly consumed foods, below are some examples. White bread: try multigrain or whole meal breads. White bread is laden with refined carbohydrates that if not burnt up store as fat in our bodies. This high glycemic index food burns up quickly in our body resulting in a spike in blood sugar leaving you looking for more to eat and on a roller coaster of ups and downs of energy and moods. Sandwich meats: deli meats such as salami, devon etc are highly processed with chemicals and preservatives. Try poached chicken fillets, tuna, salmon, prawns, tofu, left over meats. This will give you a great protein source at lunch, keeping you feeling fuller for longer, increasing

ONE of the staple foods in our diet is potato, and becoming more popular are sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes are just that, sweet and full of vitamins and minerals. They are classed as one of the super vegetables and are high in antioxidants. Sweet potatoes, botanically known as Ipomoea batatas, originated in South America and are not related to the regular potato. They are in the same family as the ornamental plant Morning Glory and grow on a vine with similar flowers and leaves, with the added benefit of sweet edible tubers. Because of their sprawling growth habit, similar to pumpkins, sweet potatoes need plenty of room. Don’t restrict them to the veggie plot, show off their lovely flowers and foliage by planting them in the ornamental garden as a groundcover or in a large container where the foliage can trail down. They can also be grown on a trellis. There are several types of sweet potato; red, orange, purple, and a white skinned variety. The flesh color varies from white to orange and purple. There is little difference in taste, although sweet potato varieties with dark orange flesh are more nutritious. Sweet potatoes are fairly easy to grow.

VETS CORNER

Prescription medication VETERINARIANS (like doctors) must follow a strict set of guidelines when dispensing medication to any owner of any animal. When you are given medication there is a label with instructions about which animal the medication is for, how it is to be given and any withholding periods that need to be followed. Your vet is dispensing this medication for a particular animal for a particular problem after examining them carefully. It is then your responsibility to give the medications correctly. If you are unsure on any aspect of any medication your animal has been prescribed, please call your vet clinic for advice. Just as you cannot walk into a pharmacy and buy antibiotics without a prescription from your doctor, your veterinarian cannot just give you prescription medication over the counter. They must see the animal first to determine which medication (if any) is required. Even if the same problem seems to have recurred, it is important for the safety of your animal that they be examined to ensure they are receiving the most appropriate medication. Different medicines work on different parts of the body in different ways. Giving one animal’s medication to a different

BOOK

The Sweetest Hallelujah by Elaine Hussey WHEN jazz singer Betty Jewel Hughes finds herself pregnant and alone, she devotes her life to raising her daughter, Billie, in Shakerag, Mississippi. 10 years later, in 1955, Betty Jewel discovers she is dying, and with no one she can count on, she does the unthinkable – takes out a classified ad seeking a loving mother for her daughter - attracting the attention of privileged widow Cassie Malone. Published by Harlequin Mira

Let’s be friends THIS week, I’ve been thinking about friendships. I conclude that the people we align ourselves with often move and change throughout our lives. At intense times we tend to forge very close bonds. As children starting school, we chum up with other newbies or even older children who offer us friendship and support. As teenagers we hang with the kids around us; those at school, those who live nearby or who share our musical, sporting or other interests. As young adults our workmates often enter our friendship sphere; people we see daily and with whom we have shared projects, knowledge or even grievances. When we pair up romantically, we often pal up with other couples and revel in our sparkling shared ‘twosome-ness’. As young parents, we gravitate towards other new families, the experience of new parenthood an exciting and confusing time for all. The inbuilt empathy of other new parents is an alluring drawcard for fledgling mums and dads. As the kids get older, we carpool and hang around together at football fields, basketball courts and dance studios. We chat at kinder and school gates and band staunchly together for fetes, fundraisers and committees. Some friendships revolve around shared aspirations, like those in sporting teams whose united goals are the flag, the cup, the gratifying win. We work side by side for the team and the sense of camaraderie is strong. Our collective needs take precedence and we feel a strong sense of belonging. As we get older, we’re drawn to those who share our views and values, often treasuring more and more our long time mates; the people who’ve shared our journeys, our stories, our histories. And then there are the friendships we have to let go. Sometimes that process can be sad or bitter. Other times it’s just a natural and gentle parting of the ways; our lives simply moving in different directions and no one feeling abandoned. Negotiating the delicate dance of friendship can be tricky.

BY CATHERINE WARNOCK Finding out who is for you, who is not and who never was can be heart-warming or gut-wrenching. Working out what is expected of you as a friend can be confusing; not everyone’s expectations are the same as ours. Fortunately for me, I’ve found the people with whom I’ve bonded best are those with whom little negotiation is needed. They don’t need me in their lives everyday, nor I them. There are times when I don’t see some of my favorite people for months or even years, and yet the bond of friendship remains. You might think this is just the lazy friend’s excuse for being a slacker, but to me it just makes sense. Life is full of things that must be done; work, family, home and leisure. It’s simply not possible to keep up with everyone all the time but when you have a strong connection with someone, there is no effort or awkwardness in catching up. It’s just feels right. So why am I writing about friendship? It’s because around me I see lots of people stressing about their friendships. Who’s friends with whom. Who said this about that. Who didn’t get an invite to a birthday bash. Who feels left out. Even in this world where ‘friendship by social media’ is the norm and most young people have hundreds of so-called friends, I know their pain is real. There’s nothing cyber about emotions. But I just want to tell them that it really doesn’t matter. If you have to work too hard at your friendships, then maybe they are not what you need. My rule of thumb is to gravitate to those who are good to, and for, me. Those who make me feel positive and loved. Those who make me laugh, give me considered advice and help me appreciate all the good things I have in my life. And to the rest, I say ‘adieu’ and wish them a great life without me (like that’s possible).

Indigo Vineyard

Buttermilk, potato fruit loaf

2012 Pinot Noir Around $32

WITH BRONWYN INGLETON

WITH ANITA McPHERSON nights must have been good for the fickle fruit, with the resulting dark and earthy red showing complex flavors of black currant, cherry and blackberry and a hint of spicy pepper savoriness. Pinot Noir freaks will love to give this one a go just to taste the terrior, but it’s also thoroughly enjoyable for anyone who simply loves deep and savory fruity wines. And it’s a winner with gamey birds; even one which has been hastily chopped up, smothered with sauce and placed in a lettuce leaf for an impromptu San Choy Bau. THIS DAY IN HISTORY

Shell aircraft depot, 1930 A MILESTONE in aviation, when on July 31, 1930, the Shell Company officially opened an aircraft refuelling centre at Bowser airstrip. It was the first in Victoria and possibly the first of its kind in Australia.

With the inauguration of a scheduled passenger service between Sydney and Melbourne, Bowser was considered by Shell to be an ideal refuelling centre, and an emergency landing ground in case of head winds and bad weather.

> 1 cup mashed potato, still warm – we use Dutch creams, or coliban potatoes > ¾ cup sugar > 1 cup dried mixed fruit > 2 cups self raising flour, sifted > Lemon zest (optional) > ½ cup buttermilk

I ACQUIRED this recipe when I married into a potato farming family and subsequently joined the CWA, so I have had it for years. We also made the mix into a Boston bun, topping it with a butter cream and coconut. It amazes me how the farming community is very inventive with their produce. Very clever people, our farmers. We should all support them by buying from the farmers’ market, or farm gate, where possible. Method Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Mash potato. We use a potato

INGREDIENTS

IT is not the kind of thing I’d normally admit to, but I recently committed the culinary crime of stuffing up a perfectly good duck. Hell bent on achieving crispy skin, I left that sucker in the oven for 20 minutes too long, and while I got the skin I wanted, the flesh was sinewy and just too dry. It can sometimes happen when you’re talking too much or you’ve taste-tested too much wine, but it shouldn’t happen when you are right there staring at the flaming thing. The meal wasn’t quite what was expected, but thankfully the wine made up for it. Pinot Noir must be the first variety which comes to mind when serving duck and there’s a top choice right here in Beechworth. Indigo Vineyard’s Pinot Noir is handpicked and matured in French oak, and exhibits wonderfully rich and bitey wild berry aromas. That granity soil and those cool

ricer to aerate the potatoes, but a fork will do – try to get as many lumps out as possible. Cream the potato and sugar together; the mixture will become quite runny. Mix all the dry ingredients together with some lemon zest if you are using it. Add the dry mix to your creamed potatoes, alternating with the buttermilk. Try not to overmix. Bake in a greased large loaf tin for 45 minutes. Insert a skewer to test that it is cooked through. Rest on a wire rack to cool. Serve with butter and jam.

BUSINESS AND FINANCE

MONEY MATTERS

The Fringe Benefits Tax argument

Develop a savings mindset

By KEN CLARKE, WANGARATTA CERTIFIED PRACTICING ACCOUNTANT

NOT RAPT: FBT changes impact the car industry, and many businesses.

ENVIOUS of your financially adept peers who pay off their credit cards monthly, are faithful to their mortgage repayments, and can still holiday every year? If ‘excessive’ is your middle name and you equate ‘savings’ with a credit limit increase, then you may need to address your attitude to money and savings. The following are some handy tips to help you tighten your budget and create savings. The three-stage guide to creating savings includes controlling spending, working off bad debts and creating a savings mindset. Control spending 1. Make your goal emotive, and share it. Give an image or name to your goal and place it where you will see it daily and feel motivated to achieve it. Share your goals with friends and family to reduce any pressure on you to spend unnecessarily, and to create some support. 2. Know your spending weaknesses. Give yourself boundaries and steer clear from situations that encourage you to spend. 3. Review your bills. Do you baulk at your monthly bills, and yet never question their rates? You can save up to $150 per month by auditing bills and switching

exemptions for taxis, panel vans, utilities and other vehicles used solely for work related travel, so really we are only talking of passenger cars. The changes will impact on car fringe benefits regardless of whether they are socalled company cars or provided through a salary packaging arrangement (eg novated leases) so it will be imperative that all proposed new arrangements are reviewed prior to finalisation. Elizabeth Lucas, Fringe Benefits Tax specialist from Grant Thornton, said the log book method requires an employer to track the costs relating to each car and to estimate the business use percentage of the car using the employee completed log books. “FBT is then payable on the private portion of the costs,” she said. “This is a major additional administrative burden compared to the previously statutory formula method. “It will also mean a higher FBT impost for many employers.” It would therefor appear that without a valid log book, the full running costs of the

car will be subject to FBT. The types of costs required to be tracked for each car will include fuel, insurance, registration, servicing, repairs and lease payments. For owned cars, depreciation and an imputed interest amount must be calculated. Employees with salary package cars will also be severely impacted as the tax savings from packaging cars have traditionally come through the use of the statutory formula method and most savings will be eliminated. It is my belief the government has taken a sledgehammer approach to raising revenue. Given the very sensitive nature of the car industry, Treasury could have simply said no public funds were to be spent other than on Australian made passenger cars, which would have been a popular people’s choice. And this would have allowed the motoring industry to come up with strategies to help the car manufacturers with buying Australian made parts.

THERE seems to be a great debate waging about the pros and cons of what the proposed changes to the Fringe Benefits Tax will do to the car industry. Like everything, changes to proposals and laws can occur at any time and Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has decided it will be fairer to all Australians if we move to an Emissions Trading Scheme on July 1, 2014. To pay for this the government has decided that Fringe Benefits Tax will have changes applied to car use. This will have an impact on the car industry, employers and employees as the government is proposing to scrap the statutory formula method of calculating Fringe Benefits Tax on motor vehicles. This announcement means that all new car fringe benefits arrangements entered into from July 16, 2013, or pre-existing arrangements which are varied materially after that date, must be valued using the operating cost method from April 1, 2014. Generally, the statutory formula method gave a more favorable outcome and this is what the car industry is up in arms about. In fairness to the government, it says the changes are appropriate as a tax subsidy for private use of a car is no longer appropriate, and most workers who claim deductions for work related travel will not be affected by these changes. Arrangements to provide car fringe benefits which were in place prior to July 16, 2013 will not be affected by the changes and the statutory formula method can be used indefinitely. Further, the changes do not affect

suppliers. Often, by bundling services, you can get a discount. 4. Avoid buying at full price. Waiting a few weeks for an item to go on sale will help control impulse shopping, and create muchneeded discipline. If you do need to buy, take the time to search for deals within coupons, promotions and discount codes. 5. Paying for services that you can DIY? Taking a regular beauty routine out of the salon and into your home can save you more than $1000 a year, and exercising with a friend in place of a gym membership can save another $1000. If you normally spend big at the pub, think about inviting friends over, and ask them to BYOG. 6. Avoid spending big in a group. When your friends know you have a savings goal, you’ll feel less pressured to help them out, and they may even support you. Work off bad debts 7. Pay off credit cards before saving. While it can be satisfying to begin saving straightaway, it’s best to pay off card debt first. 8. Stick to a repayment plan. Create a budgeting plan around the payment dates of all your bills, so you won’t incur late-payment fees.
