WITH the winter chill drastically impacting how comfortable we are, the time to learn (or be reminded) about how to best heat your home is now. When it comes to home heating, the approach you take can not only have an impact on the temperature, but also your general safety. In time for these cooler months, Mitsubishi Electric’s national product manager, Atesh Mani, has crafted a checklist of safety tips to warm the house, with the welfare of your family and pets in mind. Monitor for hazards It can be easy to assume you are aware of all the potential hazards in your home, but often there are covert hazards lying in wait. So what are they and how should you identify them? Where heating is concerned, a hazard is any object within one metre of the heat source, especially those that Əȸƺ ˢƏȅȅƏƫǼƺ ٫ ɎǝǣȇǸ ɎƺɴɎǣǼƺɀ ٢ƬȒɖƬǝƺɀً blankets, cushions etc.), some artwork, electronics, the list goes on. For complete peace of mind, move all objects at least one metre away from your heating source. Further to this, it is recommended to never dry any clothing on or near your heater. Check your heating source annually While it would be great to assume all appliances are fail-safe, it’s not always the most practical of assumptions to have. A simple solution is to ensure your heating systems are thoroughly checked by an accredited professional at least once a year. Don’t worry if this ɀȒɖȇƳɀ ƳǣǔˡƬɖǼɎ ɎȒ ȸƺȅƺȅƫƺȸً ǴɖɀɎ consider it another one of your annual home maintenance tasks to complete. Áǣȅƺ ɎȒ ƬǼƺƏȇ ɵȒɖȸ ˡǼɎƺȸ Air conditioning is most likely the safest form of heating your home. If you have a system installed, ask yourself ɯǝƺȇ ɵȒɖ ǼƏɀɎ ƬǼƺƏȇƺƳ Ɏǝƺ ˡǼɎƺȸِ Filters build up with dust over time, and if you’ve been blasting the cool air during summer you’ll have some build ɖȵ Ȓȇ Ɏǝƺȸƺِ Áǝǣɀ ƳƺƬȸƺƏɀƺɀ ƺǔˡƬǣƺȇƬɵ and the air passing through won’t be as fresh as it could be. Delivering clean, fresh and healthy air is a priority for Mitsubishi Electric. Our most recent indoor unit, the MSZAS90VGD-A1 uses a built-in anti-allerǕɵ ƺȇɿɵȅƺ ˡǼɎƺȸً ɯǝǣƬǝ ɯȒȸǸɀ ɎȒ ɎȸƏȵ allergens such as mould and bacteria by using enzymes to decompose them. This is ideal for people who also suffer from allergies.

Consider the type of heating you install The most popular forms of heating in Australia are electric and gas. While gas heating may be cheaper to run in some cases, it can also leach the odourless, ɎȒɴǣƬ ǕƏɀ ƏȇƳ ƬƏȸƫȒȇ ȅȒȇȒɴǣƳƺِ Regular heater servicing reduces the risk of this, but an operational carbon ȅȒȇȒɴǣƳƺ ƳƺɎƺƬɎȒȸ ǣɀ Ə ȇƺƬƺɀɀƏȸɵ ƏƳƳǣtion to any home. Avoid using external gas heaters indoors If it’s getting chillier in your home without a heating system, the idea of using your outdoor heater to heat your ȸȒȒȅ ȅǣǕǝɎ ˢƺƺɎǣȇǕǼɵ ƬȸȒɀɀ ɵȒɖȸ ȅǣȇƳِ However, it should be noted that outdoor heaters do not need to pass the same stringent safety tests as your indoor heaters. Light touch to Subaru XV upgrade

Ŷ BEST GETS BETTER: Subaru sticks to what’s best about its compact SUV. FROM the get-go the Subaru XV, or as one wag said the ‘15’, was destined for a future outside the norm of the compact sports utility vehicle. And has stayed true to form. For a start, it was powered by Subaru’s trademark horizontally-opposed four-cylinder engine mated with the marque’s ubiquitous all-wheel drive system. And styling was not your average small SUV set-up, with more of a nod to the wagon. A minor mid-life makeover for the second generation was cause to look back over the road travelled so far, while the addition of two petrol/ electric hybrid versions will give us a glimpse into the XV future when we drive them. In the meantime, apart from a fresh look, the major change is the introduction of Subaru Intelligent Drive

By DEREK OGDEN across the range. There’s also the addition of driver assist technology, with a Front View Monitor and Side View Monitor integrated into the front grille and passenger side door mirror. ENGINES / TRANSMISSIONS It’s ‘as you were’ for the MY21 XV powertrain, with the lot lifted from the upgraded second generation. SAFETY Over and above the standard active and passive (seven airbags) safety systems, the Premium includes Subaru’s Vision Assist package featuring blind spot monitor, lane change assist, rear cross-traffic alert, reverse automatic braking and front view monitor. DRIVING On the bitumen active torque vectoring has the XV turning better

with improved response and control, while the upper range models, with all-new lane keeping assist and reverse automatic braking when parking underlined the car’s five-star safety rating. There is no change to the 2-litre four-cylinder boxer engine, which delivers 115 kW and 196 Nm, claiming a combined urban / highway fuel consumption of 7 litres per 100 kilometres. The test vehicle pushed that to 8 litres per 100 kilometres in the urban environment and 5.4 on a motorway run. SI-Drive offers the choice between frugal efficiency in I mode and sportier performance in S mode, for greater engine responsiveness, switching via steering wheel-mounted controls. Noise and vibration were kept to a minimum, and while the four-cylinder engine was refined in its power

delivery, it did manage a roar only when pressed hard. The CVT works smoothly and without fuss across a wide range of ratios and offers the chance for the driver to become more involved with a seven-speed manual mode paddles. The offer is not worth taking. Leave the CVT to its own devices. Comfort and handling have come in for an upgrade with revised tuning allowing the front suspension to move more smoothly for a better ride, added agility and improved steering response. SUMMARY The Subaru XV is at the cheaper end of the massive compact SUV market but holds its own in quality and equipment with much more expensive rivals. There’s no mistaking the smart looks of the XV too. Subaru loyalists will love it.

Another car marque is coming to Australia: Cupra By EWAN KENNEDY SPANISH car maker Cupra is coming Downunder at a date yet to be set, other than that it will be in the second quarter of 2022. Cupra is the high-performance division of SEAT and was launched in 2018 as a stand-alone brand. It has its own corporate headquarters, as well as a racing car workshop in Martorell, Barcelona. It will be part of the Volkswagen Group Australia (VGA). VGA’s managing director Michael Bartsch said “The presence of Cupra within VGA perfectly complements the diverse offerings of Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda.” Interestingly, Australia will be the first

market where Cupra will operate exclusively as a performance brand. Initially there will be three models in the Australian line-up: Cupra Formentor crossover SUV, Cupra Ateca SUV and Cupra Leon hatchback. No prices have been announced at this stage, but VGA says, “It is envisaged that the Cupra range’s recommended retail pricing will start just north of $40,000 and finish just above $60,000.” Cupra will be sold online and via an agency structure in collaboration with the Volkswagen Group. It will have pop-up sales points and outlets based in existing high-profile retail environments. Vehicles will be serviced within selected outlets of the Volkswagen Group

network. They will be covered by a factory-backed, five-year/unlimited kilometre warranty. The initial three Cupra models are: CUPRA LEON Three petrol engines: 140kW, 180kW and 221kW. Plug-in hybrid: 180kW. CUPRA ATECA 221kW petrol with all-wheel-drive. CUPRA FORMENTOR Three petrol engines all with all-wheeldrive: 140kW, 180kW and 228kW. Plug-in hybrid: 180kW. Detailed specifications and pricing will be announced closer to the Australian launch and we will bring these to you as soon as they’re available.

Ŷ VIVA CUPRA: New Cupra range has a nice touch of Spanish verve.
