FOR someone who began their GOTAFE schooling on “rocky ground”, receiving the outstanding student of the year award is pretty impressive. Nineteen-year-old Vicki Hawkins said she was ecstatic when she heard she’d won. “There would have been so many good candidates for the award,” she said. “I guess it shows the work I put in to complete projects and help other students didn’t go unnoticed” “Most students in the class knew that I wasn’t a perfect student and for me to receive this award might give other students the confidence to know that no matter what background you have and no matter how many times you fail, you can still succeed if you keep trying.” Vicki studied the Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning at intermediate and senior levels which are the equivalent of year 11 and 12. During Vicki’s time in VCAL she said she was able to strengthen her mental health to help her cope with the anxiety she faced when she commenced in 2018.

VET CORNER
nemedia.com.au
YOUR GARDEN
COVID-19 and your pets I HOPE you are managing okay in these challenging times with COVID-19. As vets, we often get asked if there is any risk to our pets - many of whom are living in close contact with us. Fortunately, while there are different types of corona viruses that can affect our dogs and cats, COVID-19 does not. There is a very small chance that an infected person could accidentally leave virus particles on the coats of their pets and another person could get these on their hands and move them to their face. Transmission of COVID-19 this way is very unlikely though - and virtually impossible when we continue to practice good hygiene - wash your hands after handling animals and don’t put your hands near your face. Our pets are going to be a huge source of comfort during these unsettled times and it is really important to maintain your usual routines as much as possible when so much is changing around you. So if you normally walk your dog before work - continue to do that (while we are allowed - check guidelines at https:// www.health.gov.au/). Just be mindful of social distancing and keep well away from other people out exercising. If you normally catch up with friends for coffee and a chat after a walk, see if you can continue to meet at the same time virtually - apps such as Zoom, Skype, Facetime, WhatsApp are all ways you can video call other people. A friend of mine recently suggested a Virtual Pub - video link up with friends at a set time and have a chat and a drink or two from home! Veterinary clinics are currently open and are willing and able to help you
with Joanne Williams, Wangaratta Veterinary Clinic with your animal needs. Many clinics are no longer having clients enter the building - you call when you arrive for your appointment and a member of the team will come and collect your pet from you in the carpark. We are trialling video linkups so you can be part of the consultation from your car. We will also bring any medication or food out to you, and like all businesses - use the tap card function to pay rather than cash where possible. Any surfaces that are touched by people are being regularly disinfected (this includes our EFTPOS machine). If you are in isolation because you are unwell or have tested positive to COVID-19, just let your vet know. It is critical to the health of our community that you stay isolated - but this doesn’t mean your pet can’t be seen. We have options such as doing a virtual consultation using video, you can send your pet into us with someone else, or in some circumstances we can come and collect your pet. If we know you are have tested positive, we can take extra precautions with your pet to minimise the risk to other people handling them. We’ve been so impressed with how our pet owners have adapted to these significant changes in how we provide veterinary care - you have been patient, caring and understanding and I am sure you are extending that kindness and compassion to everyone around you thank you so much!
PET CORNER WANGARATTA RSPCA has many cats up for adoption, such as Myrtle (pictured) - an 18 month old female shorthair, blue cream tortoiseshell is looking for her new family. Her microchip number is 956000010499013. If you would like to add a furry member to your family, call the RSPCA on (03) 5722 2874. The animal adoption source code is BR100934. How to rediscover your garden AS more and more local residents find themselves isolated in their own homes, many are looking at their garden as a way to fill their time. Gardening has huge benefits, especially if people are isolated at home with their kids. It gets everyone out into the fresh air and involved in physical activity and then provides a much-needed sense of achievement when you stand back and look at what you have achieved. Autumn is a wonderful time to get reacquainted with your garden. It’s generally milder weather but with plenty of blue skies making it a good time to tidy up the garden; trimming shrubs, raking leaves or even planting a new tree or some bulbs. To get the vegie garden ready for new plants you will need to improve the soil. Take out any vegetables that have finished from the previous season, dig over the area and add compost or well broken down manure, then water the area well so
the soil is nice and damp, but not too wet, for the new seedlings or seeds. Now it’s time to get planting. Then feed your plant and add mulch to help keep the weeds down. Make sure you water as per instructions for whatever you are planting. Remember, all of the seedlings or seeds you are planting now need time to mature and be ready to harvest. Gardening requires patience. We are unable to take customer orders for seedlings as there are just not enough to go around. Please call and we can let you know what we have currently in stock. I have vegetable seeds on order which should be arriving soon so just give me a call and I can let you know what the situation is. If you have any problems, like most nurseries, I’m happy for people to call me during business hours for advice or message us on Facebook.

WINE TALK

YOUR HEALTH
Morris Wines Classic Liquer Topaque FARMERS have long been used to being at the mercy of the weather and they tend show remarkable resilience in the face of a crisis. From drought and flood to fire and hail, and even smoke, they can spend money and time tending and growing their crop for months only to clutch defeat from the hands of victory right before harvest when Mother Nature throws them a curve ball. Now while wine businesses are dealing with dreadful circumstances, growers of other fruit, vegetables and seedlings can’t keep up with demand and have shoppers and job seekers beating a path to their door, after experiencing times when they almost couldn’t give their produce away. It’s a strange world. Like everyone else I’ve been spending more time at home contemplating the meaning of life and it helps to do it with a little glass of Morris of Rutherglen Classic Liqueur Topaque. Enjoy the deep amber colour of this fortified wine and the way the golden, fragrant liquid rolls slowly around in the glass.

There’s a bit of malt and toffee in the aroma and the flavour is rich but also savoury in its firey sweetness; with hints of date and butterscotch. It’s a very warming and soothing sipper - which really hits the spot just now. Available from local outlets or visit www.morriswines.com while making a promise visit the region again as soon as possible.

This Day in History, 1860 CELEBRATING ancient festivals came easily to new goldrush settlements. Chiltern was only a few months old when April Fools Day came around in 1860, but did they forget their ancient customs? Unfortunate doctors and lawyers, whose sleep was disturbed by midnight calls to attend imaginary emergencies, and to take death-bed wills at 3am from soundly sleeping men in robust health, would mutter an emphatic “no”. According to the Chiltern Standard, half the town’s business and professional people were got out of bed under one pretext or another.

with Naturopaths Belinda McPherson and Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) ◆ NOT SO HEALTHY: Health is defined as more than just the absence of disease. And a good immune system is a key to staying healthy.
Strengthen your immune system by ensuring your gut is healthy A GOOD immune system is not simply an absence of disease but more importantly is a state of lifelong resistance and ability to recover in a timely manner. Approximately 70 per cent of our immune system is located in our gut, indicating that optimal nutritional status and gut function are paramount especially during autumn and leading into winter. Tips to stay healthy this autumn: 1) Avoid sugar, white flour and processed snacks. These both suppress the function of the immune system and allow for infections to easily replicate. 2) Bone stocks. It’s easy to do and will last you for ages. The resulting broth is chock-full of minerals that is perfect in your winter soups and stews. Incorporate mushrooms, ginger, garlic, parsley, tumeric, thyme, oregano and horseradish to boost your antimicrobial, antifungal aspect of your meal. Eating easily digestible foods such as soups and stews allows your body to focus on fighting viruses instead of using energy to
digest. Very soothing to your digestive function as well. 3) Curry pastes are an awesome way to get herbs into your body that reduce inflammation, boost immune system and support great gut function. We have some great recipes on our website, try the Mughlai curry if you aren’t keen on too much spice. 4) Boost your digestive juices: ACV/ lemon juice in water before a meal, bitter greens in your salad or lemon juice as a dressing to steamed veg or salads are great ways to improve your digestion, reduce indigestion and heartburn help you to break down food easily to avoid fermentation (farts and burps!) 5) Keep your bowels moving: your bowels are a great elimination tool and should be moved daily. Hydration, soft fibres such as LSA, soaked chia, oats and slippery elm are great for bowels, gut health and your immune system. We are open for phone/skype consultations and for remedy collection/post, please touch base if you need us via phone, book online or via our social media.
We are here to support you.

Fishing pursuits at home SO we’re all housebound hey? Well as much as it sucks that I will not be going fishing any time in the near future, I have no shortage of fishing related activities to do at home in preparation for when this sad chapter of our lives is over. Firstly, if you get bored, why not jump on YouTube and watch some of my fishing videos? I have more than 900 videos on my channel “robbiefishing” ranging from large Murray cod, to failed yabbying videos and everything in between. Over the next couple of months I will remain busy at home. Some of the things I am looking forward to doing are: cleaning my shed, organising my fishing gear, servicing my fishing reels, sharpening hooks on my fishing lures, replacing any damaged treble hooks with new hooks etc. There is really no end to what I can do in order to prepare myself for the time when we can all go fishing once again. Also, I will be filming product reviews and tutorial videos from my shed/studio for my channel,
with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA and writing mini feature articles for this very column which will continue to run each Wednesday until Queen’s Birthday weekend as it does every other year. I have a stack of fishing DVDs in my collection including the Cod Almighty series from Rod Mackenzie and the Social Fishing complete guide fishing tutorial series as well as a handful of New Zealand fly fishing DVDs. Watching them might be torturous, but will also remind me that there is so much to look forward to when we come out the other side of this current sad situation. This too shall pass and when it does, the waterways will be full of fat, stupid fish that have not seen any lures for a period of time.
◆ THE BIG QUESTIONS: As we sit at home, it can be worth expanding our horizons by reading up on the big unsolved mysteries of science.
The great mysteries of science WITH all this down time, I feel it’s the perfect opportunity for scientists to get the old noodle jogging and devote some energy to the as-yet unsolved mysteries of science. It’s a common sentiment in science that there are more questions than answers, and this week I thought we’d take a look a few of the biggest mysteries. How did life originate? It doesn’t seem like this one should be so hard, but it continues to defy solution. There’s plenty of speculation, often related to RNA’s ability to act both as catalyst and bio-hard drive to store information. And new findings turn up all the time about how life’s basic building blocks could have been generated in primordial conditions or delivered to Earth from space. Just what is dark matter anyway? It has been eight decades or so since astronomers began to notice that there is more gravity pulling stuff around out in space than there is visible matter able to produce such effects. Attempts to detect the supposedly exotic (as in, unknown) species of subatomic particle responsible for the extra gravity have been frustrating. Hints seen in some experiments have been ruled out by other experiments. And dark energy, what’s up with that? If you think dark matter is frustrating, try explaining dark energy. Something is driving space to expand at an ever increasing rate. Physicists think that they know what it is - the never-changing density of energy residing throughout all of space, referred to by Einstein as the “cosmical term” and now called the cosmological constant. But when you calculate how strong the cosmological constant should be, the answer is too big by dozens of orders of magnitude - much more than the difference between the size

of the entire universe compared with a proton. So dark energy’s identity remains a mystery. The nature of time So many mysteries, so little time in which to solve them, unless solving this one would reveal some clever tricks to play with time. Many sub-mysteries underlie this one, corresponding to almost all of the 44 definitions of time in the dictionary (and that’s just as a noun). What’s the nature of duration and the flow of time - is it illusory or ‘real’ in some elusive way? What about the direction of time - does it always go forward? Why? Is time travel possible? Can one become one’s own great, great grandfather? Perhaps the biggest mystery is whether all these issues about time are related or are completely separate questions. Does intelligent life exist elsewhere? It’s tempting to delete the ‘elsewhere,’ but given what passes for intelligence on Earth, it makes sense to wonder if anything like it could be blundering about aimlessly, obsessed with its own version of a smart phone, or watching ‘Blakenfeerd at First Sight’. ‘Blakenfeerd’, I posit, is said other intelligent life-form’s time honoured tradition of marriage, equally sullied by its own version of the inexplicable hit reality TV show, in which contestants do the ‘Floobenfloofen’ with not only their partners, but also others, and then boast about it around the dinner table before excreting acidic gas from the tentacles protruding from their heads - a sign of great disrespect to other dinner guests, not to mention the mess it makes. I make no apologies, this is what happens when I get cooped up for too long.
