The

write stuff By KYLIE WILSON

FROM her desk bathed in light at her peaceful Kiewa home, Marta Lett’s skills in calligraphy, built up over a lifetime, connect her to not only her forebears, but an age old skill practiced around the world. Her mother, Coralie, and Coralie’s own mother, affectionately known as Gran’ma Millie, noticed her enduring interest in decorative lettering and abstract drawings from an early age. “My mother enjoyed telling me stories of her time working in the NSW state library and about a facsimile of the 1200 year old Celtic manuscript ‘The Book of Kells’,” Marta said. “She also showed me an original family document from the 1800s of an indenture contract detailing the young woman’s conditions of employment. “Looking into history through the prism of beautifully hand written and decorated manuscripts began to take hold of me.”

Tax office to double audits of dodgy rental deductions ated by the Australian community. “The government recently allocated additional funds to the ATO to extend its program of audits and reviews of rental properties. “We expect to more than double the number of in-depth audits we conduct this year to 4500, with a specific focus on over-claimed interest, capital works claimed as repairs, incorrect apportionment of expenses for holiday homes let out to others, and omitted income from accommodation sharing. “Once our auditors begin, they may search through even more data including utilities, tolls, social media and other online content to determine whether the taxpayer was entitled to claims they’ve made. While no penalties will apply for taxpayers who amend their returns due to genuine mistakes, deliberate attempts to over-claim can attract penalties of up to 75 per cent of the claim. In 2017–18, the ATO audited more than 1500 taxpayers with rental claims, and applied penalties totalling $1.3 million. Ruby Saltbush

DESPITE a few millimeters of rain, the ‘Big Dry’ continued through April. Maintaining a fresh, attractive garden during this year’s exceptionally dry autumn invites lateral thinking. Ruby Saltbush [Enchylaena tomentosa] is an attractive alternative to species that require supplementary watering. E. tomentosa is a sub-shrub, growing up to about 30–40 cm high. It has attractive lacey grey foliage. Plants tolerate poor soils and harsh climatic conditions. They prefer full sun, but will cope with dappled or light shade. They can be trimmed or hedged or left untrimmed as a low-maintenance ground-cover. Saltbush is an Australian ‘catch-all’ term for various species - including Atriplex, Maireana and Enchylaena.

The succulent cylindrical leaves are covered with fine white hairs (tomentose), giving the plant an attractive grey appearance. The tomentose leaves reflect considerable heat which contributes to the species’ survival in tough conditions. Flowers are insignificant, but the small, juicy fruits are a feature. From bright green, they change to yellow, then orange to red when fully ripe. The plant bears fruit year-round. The varying colours of the stages of maturing fruits are a feature. Seed-eating birds may be attracted to the ripe berries. Moreover, the red berries are sweet and make a tasty snack. Recipes are available for incorporating them into bush tucker cuisine.

In recent times, with the growing popularity of the value of plants suitable for low-water-use gardens, the possibilities for using this group of Australian plants has rapidly evolved. Ruby Saltbush belongs to the Chenopodiaceae family. This large world-wide family includes beetroot, sugar beet, Swiss chard, quinoa, and spinach. In many low-rainfall areas saltbush are the dominant shrubby vegetation and are the staple diet of indigenous animals. They are also a useful stock feed for sheep. Ruby Saltbush occurs in all mainland states. It grows in sand dunes, marshy swamps, on coastal and inland plains, from the tropics to the south.

RENTAL property owners are being warned to ensure their claims are correct this tax time, as the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) said it will double the number of audits scrutinising rental deductions. In the 2017–18 financial year, more than 2.2 million Australians claimed over $47 billon in deductions. Assistant Commissioner Gavin Siebert says that this year, the ATO has made rental deductions a top priority. “A random sample of returns with rental deductions found that nine out of 10 contained an error. “ he said. “We are concerned about the extent of non-compliance in this area and will be looking very closely at claims this year.” When it comes to dodgy claims, the ATO’s detection methods are becoming more advanced. “We use a range of third party information including data from financial institutions, property transactions and rental bonds from all states and territories, and online accommodation booking platforms, in combination with sophisticated analytics to scrutinise every tax return,” Mr Siebert said. “Where we identify claims of concern, ATO staff will investigate and prompt taxpayers to amend unjustifiable claims. If necessary, we will commence audits. “Over-claiming robs the whole community of essential services and will not be toler-

Marta said she was also inspired by a calligraphy exhibition her mother took her to in the Rocks, Sydney, when she was 15 years old, but it was 14 years before Marta, by then a mother of two, delved back into the pastime while living on the Coffs Coast, and joined the Coffs Calligraphers Club. “This began an intense nine years of study immersing myself in the world of calligraphy,” she said. One of her key influences was Coffs Calligraphers Club founding member and renowned calligrapher Colleen Little, who Marta said guided and taught her and her fellow group members. “Colleen mentored me as a beginner into a developing calligraphy artist, assisting me with the process of producing commissions for paying clients, then with the process of teaching my own students and running my own business,” she said. “I was lucky to model my own teaching on Colleen’s, with her wonderfully detailed preparation and nuanced teaching methods.” With a strong Celtic family background, Marta said her favourite forms of calligraphy include cursive Gothic scripts and Celtic Uncial scripts.

Does your child have interests that they want to turn into passions? Are they eager to contribute to all areas of school life?

She gets a real buzz from creative work. “I feel whole when creating, be it practicing calligraphy, drawing or painting a new Celtic design, or producing a commissioned piece,” Marta said. “It’s a peaceful meditative space where I lose sense of time. “I get a great sense of satisfaction looking at anything I have completed. “I only feel it is completed once I am happy with the result. “Often an artwork evolves in the doing as planning only gets me so far, then the creative process leads me through starting with the calligraphy, then the decorative and painted elements. “Often the choice of colours will change along the way. “I love using the rich colours found in my favourite manuscripts, and also draw inspiration for my colour palette from the drama of colour in our Australian landscape.” Marta said she found joy in working with a variety of writing implements, inks and paper mediums, but said one of her favourite media to work with is watercolour gouache, because of its creamy consistency and dense colour coverage. She said that she felt it was vital

WHILST chocolate - including the chocolate eggs you got at Easter - is really tasty for the whole family, it is toxic and very dangerous for your furry friends. The amount of chocolate your pet has to eat to become sick varies, so even one Easter egg could be enough to cause serious harm. Signs of chocolate toxicity generally occur within 6-12 hours of eating it and can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and restlessness, sometimes progressing to heart issues, tremors and seizures. The toxin can also cross the placental wall and affect puppies inside the womb. Treatment of your pet depends on how much chocolate they have ingested and when it occurred. If your pet has eaten chocolate contact your local veterinarian as soon as possible. Hope you all had a Happy Easter period.

to keep calligraphy and handwriting skills alive in the modern world. “There is still a demand for formal documents to be commissioned from calligraphers as they are more highly valued, and often require complementary skills such as illumination and heraldry which are best done by hand,” Marta said. “There are many small jobs that require hand lettering skills where computers or automation simply aren’t equal to the task. “If we lost calligraphy and common handwriting skills, we would also lose the ability to read old manuscripts and handwritten documents. “Another aspect to be considered is how we teach children handwriting and encourage them to develop a good, legible cursive style, as the act of writing by hand is important for brain development and creative thinking.” Marta has worked on many pieces over the years, but said her most meaningful piece detailed domestic violence. “I composed the words in five sections representing differing stages of my experience,” she said. “The whole piece was done in variations of Uncial scripts in reds, yellows and murky earthy tones.

“I displayed this artwork in several art prize shows and local exhibitions over two years across the regions from Sydney to Ballina NSW,” she said, adding that it was also used in domestic violence awareness campaigns and eventually became permanently exhibited at the Kempsey Courthouse. Marta will be sharing her skills at a workshop in Celtic Calligraphy this Sunday, May 5 from 10am3.30pm, being held as part of the Goulburn and North East Arts Alliance’s biennial Across The Arts Forum, taking place from May 3-5. Participants will be able to work at recreating illuminated patterns, symbols and letters using traditional Celtic calligraphy techniques. She is looking forward to sharing her skills. “It’s a great joy for me to share my knowledge and skills with others who have an interest,” Marta said. “I am most alive and animated when I can share my love of the calligraphic and Celtic arts.” For more information on this workshop, see the Across the Arts links at www.ganeaa.com.au. Terrific time for trout just a tad more water in many streams not a lot as we didn’t get much rain, but we had enough to help a little. I have had some great trout fishing success in small tributaries of the Ovens and King rivers with both small minnow style lures and soft plastics. The 1: Strike Tiger nymph soft plastic in black caviar car has been working exceptionally well, although I cannot help but think that over the coming weeks with less and less crickets around the black soft plastic may not be as effective, and a fluorescent coloured lure of some description might work better. I think that trick might be to find somewhere that has not seen much fishing pressure lately and straight after Easter that is going to be a real challenge. Just quickly, Lake Mulwala is still fishing quite well for Murray cod with many anglers having success. Only 10 minutes before typing this report on Sunday I was sent a photo of my friend Christian Charnstrom with a magnificent 73cm Murray cod. I will attach that photo to next week’s report.

LAST WEEK’S SOLUTION

JUST like that autumn has arrived. With the blink of an eye the leaves have changed colour, many have already fallen and the trout switch has been turned on. The water temperature in the streams is ideal for trout fishing right now, and the trout think so too - nine out of 10 trout surveyed over the weekend said they are happy with the current water temperature. If you have a favourite trout stream, then now is the time to fish it because just about every creek and river that has trout in it is fishing well at the moment, subject to water flow. FIBRE is cheap, essential to optimal health and is often not consumed in enough quantity for optimal health. All Saints Estate 2018 Sangiovese Cabernet WHAT better way to welcome the change of season than to get out and about and sample all the amazing food and wine on offer within our region. It’s kind of nice that everything old is new again, and to see that among the events in this year’s Feast High Country festival, are practises which have been enjoyed by families for generations. People are discovering again why fermented foods like sourdough and sauerkraut are so delicious and good for us, how much fun it is to forage for wild ingredients, and that gnocchi in a packet doesn’t compare to what you can roll yourself. Even pickling is experiencing a renaissance and it’s one I’m happy to champion, knowing it’s a way of preserving beautiful produce while adding a taste sensation to every table. Old fashioned corned silverside became something quite

It’s a blend of locally grown Sangiovese with a little premium estategrown Cabernet Sauvignon thrown in. TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ MORE THAN FIVE: Humans, and indeed other animals, have many more senses than the five we’re familiar with.

Talking sense about the human senses WE’VE all heard about the ‘five senses of the human body’, but you may be suprised to learn that our body’s ability to sense the world around is actually a lot more complex than simply sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste. This week I thought we’d take a look at just some of the lesser known and more subtle senses of the human body. Thermoception: The ability to sense heat and cold. This also is thought of as more than one sense, not just because of the two hot/cold receptors, but also because there is a completely different type of thermoceptor - in terms of the mechanism for detection - in the brain. These thermoceptors in the brain are used for monitoring

internal body temperature. Proprioception: This sense gives you the ability to tell where your body parts are, relative to other body parts. This sense is one of the things police officers in the United States test when they pull over someone who they think is driving drunk (you’ll likely have seen a demonstration of this in the show ‘Cops’). The “close your eyes and touch your nose” test is testing this sense. This sense is used all the time in little ways, such as when you scratch an itch on your foot, but never once look at your foot to see where your hand is relative to your foot. It’s also one of the main senses that gets thrown off by experiences like VR games, where your sense of your

body doesn’t match your sight. Nociception: In a word pain. This was once thought to simply be the result of overloading other senses, such as “touch”, but this has been found not to be the case and instead, it is its own unique sensory system. There are three distinct types of pain receptors: cutaneous (skin), somatic (bones and joints), and visceral (body organs). Equilibrioception: The sense that allows you to keep your balance and sense body movement in terms of acceleration and directional changes. This sense also allows for perceiving gravity. The sensory system for this is found in your inner ears and

is called the vestibular labyrinthine system. Anyone who’s ever had this sense warped due to dizziness or an ear infection knows how important this is. When it’s not working or malfunctioning, you literally can’t tell up from down and moving from one location to another without aid is nearly impossible. Stretch Receptors: These are found in such places as the lungs, bladder, stomach, and the gastrointestinal tract. A type of stretch receptor, that senses dilation of blood vessels, is also often involved in headaches. Chemoreceptors: These trigger an area of the medulla in the brain that is involved in detecting blood-borne hormones and drugs.

It is also involved in the vomiting reflex and plays an important role in chemotherapy. Magnetoception: This is the ability to detect magnetic fields, which is principally useful in providing a sense of direction when detecting the Earth’s magnetic field. Unlike most birds, humans do not have a strong magentoception, however, experiments have demonstrated that we do tend to have some sense of magnetic fields. The mechanism for this is not completely understood; it is theorised that this has something to do with deposits of ferric iron in our noses. This would make sense if that is correct as humans who are given magnetic implants have been shown to have a

much stronger magnetoception than humans without such implants. Time: This one is debated as no singular mechanism has been found that allows people to perceive time. However, experimental data has conclusively shown humans have a startling accurate sense of time, particularly when younger. The mechanism we use for this seems to be a distributed system involving the cerebral cortex, cerebellum, and basal ganglia. Long term time keeping seems to be monitored by the suprachiasmatic nuclei (responsible for the circadian rhythm). Short term time keeping is handled by other cell systems.

If they build it, we will all watch CHANNEL CHAT

THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS: Andrew Denton: Interview (Tuesday, 9pm, Prime7): If last season’s Daniel Johns chat is any indication, Denton still has so much to offer in the interviewer’s chair. The Recording Studio (Tuesday, 8pm, ABC): Everyday Australians are given the chance to record a song loaded with meaning for them and for the person to whom it’s dedicated. Anh’s Brush With Fame (Wednesday, 8pm, ABC): Like Andrew Denton, Anh Do takes a gentle approach to interviewing, and shows it is often the way to draw the most truth from his subjects.

SHOW: Lego Masters CHANNEL: Nine TIME: Sunday, 7pm

with Simone Kerwin COMBINE one of the world’s most popular toys, and one of Australia’s most popular personalities (who is really just a big kid), and you have the recipe for Nine’s new series ‘Lego Masters’. Hosted by Hamish Blake, in his first outing without longtime collaborator Andy Lee, this series promises to be the antidote to all those cringe-

worthy reality shows filled with nasty back-stabbers which are currently littering our screens. The show features eight pairs of Lego enthusiasts, or ‘brick heads’, from around Australia, who are handed a series of challenges to test their design and engineering skills, storytelling abilities, and adaptability.

◆ MASTER BUILDERS: Host Hamish Blake and judge Ryan ‘The Brickman’ McNaught with the eight pairs set to take on the challenges presented by ‘Lego Masters’.

According to the host, some of the combinations will surprise us; among them are a grandmother/grandson team, a couple of mates who run a Sri Lankan food truck to fund their Lego obsession, and two mates who work on

oil rig equipment and just love building Lego models. Contestants’ responses to each challenge will be judged by Ryan ‘The Brickman’ McNaught, an Aussie who is one of only 14 Legocertified professionals in the

world, as they build their way towards potentially winning the $100,000 prizemoney on offer. Already a hit in the UK (yes, it’s another international franchise, but hopefully a positive one), this series appears to have a lot going for it.

There will be strong buyin from Lego lovers, Hamish Blake fans, and perhaps even parents who spy a potential career pathway for their kids through the hundreds of dollars’ worth of Lego sitting in their bedrooms. We can but dream.
