Volunteering and pennyfarthings FOR Beechworth’s John Hennessy ESM, volunteerism is the backbone of communities - it’s what makes them tick. The local legend who is also known in Beechworth for riding his pennyfarthing on special occasions around town was awarded the Emergency Services Medal in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours for outstanding volunteer service to the Victorian State Emergency Services (VICSES). “There are 5000 VICSES volunteers who do an amazing job and I was flabbergasted to

By CORAL COOKSLEY learn I was awarded a meritorious medal,” he said. The quiet achiever sees himself as “just a little cog who works cooperatively in a big team.” With a strong belief that communities cannot function without volunteers, John enjoys “giving back” and attributes SES standards and values in helping to define who he is today.

SNOW PLAY

A proud SES volunteer for more than three decades, the energetic 80-year-old has worked mainly in North East Victoria but has been deployed across the state and interstate during disaster emergencies. His dedication in improving volunteerism, and enhancing the volunteer experience at VICSES has included many roles across several SES units and has earned him state-wide peer and staff respect. Roles have included helping to establish the North East’s Regional Support Unit at Be-

nalla, and aiding in the rebuild of the Tallangatta Unit, mentoring new controllers and attending major flood and fire events. Presently Myrtleford SES unit’s deputy controller, Mr Hennessy has been a team member for the last 12 years along with membership on various VICSES state committees. “Being part of a volunteer organisation that does good things, one gets a buzz, learns new skills and enjoys great camaraderie too.” While the SES has played a significant role in John’s

life, he credits four incredibly strong women - his mother, grandmother and two aunts - in shaping his life from an early age. “My father was called up for war service nine days after I was born - he was a WWII Burma Railway Prisoner of War survivor.” “Living in Brisbane, my mother and I returned home to our 6,000 acre family property near Wagga Wagga where these independent women managed the property with little assistance and

I didn’t see my dad until I was five.” “My early years on the farm gave me a sense of independence and self reliance.” “And my father always impressed upon me the value of mateship, cooperation and working together as a team for the greater good.” “The North East is a great place to live, a lifestyle choice for many, and such an interesting part of the world, why wouldn’t you want to be a volunteer and contribute to your community?”

VET CORNER

Early-age desexing TRADITIONALLY, vets have recommended that cats and dogs are desexed between about five and a half and six months of age. But over the past decade, desexing at an earlier age (from eight weeks onwards) has become more common. This is known as early-age desexing or EAD. The RSPCA has been desexing kittens and puppies in its shelters at this earlier age for many years, and based on this experience and the accumulation of considerable scientific evidence, the RSPCA considers EAD to be a safe and effective strategy for the wider community to prevent unplanned/unwanted litters in cats and dogs. Preventing unwanted litters of cats and dogs is a key objective for the RSPCA. Desexing is vital to reduce the number of unwanted companion animals entering shelters and pounds, and the earlier that cats and dogs can be desexed, the less likely it is that they will reproduce. The RSPCA also advocates desexing of puppies and kittens prior to sale from breeders or pet shops, and EAD makes this possible.

with RSPCA Knowledgebase

In addition to helping to prevent unwanted pregnancy, EAD can offer significant animal welfare benefits when compared to traditional age desexing. Desexing surgery is faster and easier when carried out on younger patients as their anatomical structures are less developed. There is less tissue trauma and less tissue handling involved, the surgery incision site is smaller, and bleeding is reduced and minimal. It also takes less time to prepare the animals for EAD surgery which means less time under general anaesthesia. The anaesthetic recovery and wound healing times are also shorter, providing further animal welfare benefits. EAD significantly reduces the risk of mammary cancer in both dogs and cats. These benefits are in addition to all of the commonly accepted benefits associated with general desexing, such as a reduction in wandering/roaming and undesirable sexual behaviours such as mounting and urine spraying.

PET CORNER WANGARATTA RSPCA has many lovable creatures waiting for the perfect family to take them home. Keep greening inside - it’s good for you FILLING your home with living greenery is not a new thing to those of us who have been loving, growing, nurturing and selling indoor plants since we can remember. Your locally owned garden centre has always had a dedicated area well stocked with indoor plants, pots and plant care products as well as passionate plant people who can tell you which plant to put where for it to thrive. What is new is that plants inside the home have now become a real passion for many, almost an obsession for some and an ever increasing trending topic on social media as more and more of us realise that plants can genuinely make us happy. In days gone by we would purchase a plant and put it on our desk or in our bathroom, now we are using hashtags and words like #plantstyling #plantinspo, #jung-

Whether we’re trying to “keep up with the Kardashians”, we simply love plants or we have just realised the numerous health and wellbeing benefits of having plants inside the home, what we should know is that statistics quoted by the Australian Government Department of Environment and Energy has found that we spend on average 90 per cent of our time inside the house. Concentrations of some pollutants inside our homes, building and work spaces are up to 10 times higher than the typical outdoor concentration. There are so many big, confusing and hard to spell words associated with the toxins and pollutants in our indoor air such as VOCs,

WINE TALK

YOUR HEALTH Gapsted Wines 2018 Cabernet Merlot

HAVING spent more time than usual catching up on movies in recent weeks I’ve come to the conclusion that I want to be delivered a complete experience. Like a good wine, a good story should have a start, middle and a satisfying end, and I’m not interested in investing two hours if you’re not going to ďŹ nish it off for me. The last two arthouse efforts I’ve endured were visually spectacular and promising but the music started and the credits began to roll before we found out who lived, who did it or what it all meant. It’s like tearing out the last pages of a novel; a Picnic at Hanging Rock-style frustrating experience for those who want to be entertained without having to Google or join their own dots. It was time for a glass of wine. Gapsted Wines 2018 Cabernet Merlot is made from fruit sourced from cool climate vineyards in the King Valley region. It starts with vibrant, fruit-ďŹ lled aromas that surge up from the glass as this dark and moody red wine is poured. There’s ripe blackcurrant, maybe some blackberry and plum too in the heady mix, tempting you to taste and ďŹ nd out that fruit is still vibrant but

Iron women - the need to better manage iron levels in pregnancy balanced beautifully by some chocolatey, savoury spice. The mouthfeel and avour is luscious and long, making you kind of sad it ended. The only way this will make you cranky is anyone taking the glass away before you’ve ďŹ nished.

This Day in History - 1882 COFFEE palaces were all the rage in 1882 and Wangaratta was able to boast one when the Royal Coffee Palace was opened by Sam Osboldstone, in the de-licenced Royal Hotel.

NATUROPATHS consider iron to be the super nutrient of pregnancy; largely because of its ability to dramatically improve the wellbeing of the mother and reduce serious issues in the pregnancy like low birth weight and premature birth. Anaemia of pregnancy also plays a role in post-natal depression and babies born to mums with anaemia of pregnancy can have increased infection rates and poor brain development. We also know that iron deďŹ cient mums have a harder time breastfeeding and are way more tired than iron replete mums. Iron excess can also be a serious health risk for both mother and baby so never supplement without discussing with a naturopath ďŹ rst. For the most part, iron deďŹ ciency is easily treated but as you need two times as much iron in pregnancy, we’re ďŹ nding many women are not meeting

demands through diet, and also that low iron levels are being picked up far too late in the pregnancy for basic iron supplements to make much change. Given that many of these supplements are constipating at larger doses, many mums are opting out of treatment before the problem is really ďŹ xed. Managing optimal iron levels and pre-empting the natural drops of iron as your baby grows and draws on your iron stores is something that we have worked hard at mastering. During pregnancy we never wait for iron to get so low that anaemia is diagnosed. As soon as we see iron stores dropping or as you are leading up to a growth spurt we act swiftly with food therapy, herbs that build blood and work in a variety of ways to help both absorb and release more iron. These

herbs often have a secondary action to settle the stomach, reduce reux and reduce constipation. If you feel very tired, light headed or drained in your pregnancy ask to have your iron levels tested and seek our support to access a quality supplement that won’t constipate you and devise a plan that will have you bouncing before you know it. If your practitioner mentions that your iron is low during pregnancy but they are not ready to start treatment, you can deďŹ nitely start on iron rich foods, however, in most cases it will not be adequate at this stage. Herbs and non-constipating supplements, in combination with diet, will help you avoid the serious consequences of low iron, rather than waiting for you to be so deďŹ cient that you require an iron infusion.

John describes a volunteer as someone who uses their skills and initiative in a selfless way - they see something that needs to be done without any thought of reward. “There are so many volunteer organisations and I believe they make Beechworth and the North East engaging and dynamic places, and I want to be part of that.” With a passion for cycling, John also put his volunteer hand up as a cycling official for both the Sydney Olympics and Paralympics in 2000 and in Melbourne, the World Junior Track Championships in 2002 and in 2004, and the World Masters Games in 2006. John fell in love with pennyfarthings after reading ‘Mulga Bill’ as a child and has volunteered his time riding his pennyfarthing at special events such as The Golden Horse Shoes Festival. He has also contributed his time riding the pennyfarthing when helping to

support cycle tourism in drawing visitors to Beechworth and the High Country with Tourism North East’s ‘Ride High Country Campaign.’ “I’ve always loved bicycles and I enjoy riding my pennyfarthing on the rail trail and streets of Beechworth to buy the paper, go to the Beechworth Bakery and grab a coffee,” he said. “They’re so easy to ride but you need momentum - they’re hard to get on and off.” Apart from being a volunteer, John enjoys a drop of good wine. A trip to Hunter Valley in 1959 when living in Sydney hooked his interest in wine long before the Australian wine industry boom. “An interested consumer, I read a marvellous book ‘Journey To Wine In Victoria’ by WS Benwell, and decided to visit all 28 vineyards in the state which kicked off for my journey in the wine industry. “There were less vineyards then in

nemedia.com.au THIS is the fourth in a regular series featuring recipes that have become popular during the COVID-19 lockdown. This recipe comes from Myrtleford Savoy soccer star Luc Doherty. Luc has been experimenting with many new recipes during his time off the park but arguably his most successful treat has been the Spanish omelette. If he’s not whipping up a quick and easy dinner for his housemates, he’s creating his speciality ‘Luc’s Vegan Bean’, putting together moist banana chocolate bread or treating everyone to a divine English breakfast.

SNOW REPORT

◆ SNOW GOOD: A light dusting of snow was a welcome sight on the picnic tables at Mt Buffalo last week.

2020 ski season underway for some AT Mount Buller, while we shivered through a foggy, cold start to the day last Wednesday, the first skiers and boarders for the 2020 season hopped onto the Bourke Street Express in brilliant sunshine and with big smiles. Physical distancing was the name of the game with just three people per six-seater chair and 1.5m spacing between the queue lines. The Snow Factories have been on full operation in recent weeks and delivered the goods with one ski line down Bourke Street groomed in last Tuesday night. Lift passes MUST be pre-purchased online to manage capacity limits in resort and more lift passes available each day will be assessed, snow conditions and lift operations permitting. Visitors to the resort will receive an SMS notification to generate a streamlined QR code registration process on arrival in resort. The new technology will eventually also extend to some dining venues making registration, and important contact tracing, simple and effective. Please note there is currently NO tobogganing at Mt Buller and Mt Stirling until further notice. Mt Hotham and Falls Creek have unfortunately had another delay to the start of their 2020 ski season and lifts (July 6) due to challenging early-season conditions. While they’re received some snowfalls in the Alpine region, the rescheduled date is still

dependent on conditions and the delay is to ensure that Mount Hotham and Falls Creek can open enough terrain to provide a safe experience in accordance with the COVID-19 Safe Operating Plan. Mt Buffalo has been gifted with light snowfalls as well but with limited snow at Dingo Dell and Cresta Valley, tobogganing is yet to commence. Parks Victoria have implemented some changes to ensure compliance with COVID19 restrictions at Mt Buffalo. If the car park is full, no more people can visit until others leave. Please observe physical distancing of 1.5 metres at all times, bring your own hand sanitizer and do not gather in groups of more than 10 people. Chains must be carried and fitted when directed.

For the latest information on all State Government COVID-19 restrictions, go to: https://www.dhhs.vic.gov.au/coronaviruscovid-19-daily-update and for up to date information about what’s happening at local mountains this winter, see: Falls Creek: www.fallscreek.com.au Mt Hotham: www.hotham.com.au Mt Buller: www.mtbuller.com.au Mt Buffalo: visitmountbuffalo.com.au
