IT is a long way from the small Italian village of San Ginese to the quiet streets of Myrtleford. But author Moreno Giovannoni, who was born in the village but spent much of his formative years living in Buffalo River – has strong ties to both places, as well as indelible memories of his experience as an immigrant. “I grew up at Buffalo River on a tobacco farm, just past what we used to call Johnson’s Bridge, so I basically spent all my time there,” Moreno said. “I mostly came into town to go to school and that was it – the rest of the time I was fishing, or riding my horse. “I did a bit of ferreting too. “I spent a lot of time sitting on river banks and daydreaming, and I also spent a lot of time listening to Beatles records on the back verandah, looking out over the river flat where the tobacco grew to the hills on the other side of the river.” Moreno has vivid memories of the community in the 1960s and 70s. “In those days, Myrtleford and district was buzzing with share farmers and seasonal labourers at tobacco picking time” he said. “The Italian community was enormous. “At the end of tobacco season dances were big occasions when the grown ups would let their hair down. “The dances would be held in the grading sheds and there would be trestle tables covered with food and drinks, and the kids would be playing hide and chasey under the tables and outside in the dark.”

Two clicks to sort your super THE Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is urging all taxpayers to take a few moments to check their superannuation while using ATO online services through myGov this tax time. Deputy Commissioner James O’Halloran said tax time is the best time to check your super. “Most people might not realise how easy it is, you just click on the super tab next to the tax tab while you are online to do your tax or check your return, and you could find super you have forgotten you have,” he said. “Finding your lost super or consolidating any unwanted multiple accounts might not seem like it matters today, but it could make a massive difference to your retirement.” “Multiple accounts that you may not be aware of means multiple fees. “It’s your money and you should make sure it’s working for you.” Australians have over $18 billion in lost and unclaimed super. If you have ever changed your name, address, job or lived overseas, chances are you may have lost super waiting to be claimed. During the last five years more than $10.7 billion of super has been consolidated from over 2.1 million accounts through ATO online services. Another important thing to re-
member this tax time is the new super deduction available to help Australians set themselves up for the future. Most people under 75 years of age can claim a tax deduction for personal after-tax super contributions. Personal superannuation contributions deductions (PSCD) provide a level of flexibility for young people that change jobs frequently, self-employed contractors, small business employees, freelancers and people whose employers do not offer salary sacrifice arrangements. “Being able to claim a deduction for after-tax personal super contributions could benefit millions of Australians and is one of the most significant changes to the tax system this year,” Mr O’Halloran said. To get a deduction for any personal superannuation contributions you made in 2017/18 you must lodge a notice of intent to claim a deduction with your fund and receive a confirmation letter from them before lodging your tax return. For more details on lost super, see ato.gov.au/Individuals/ Super/Keeping-track-of-yoursuper/; or for information on personal super contributions deductions see ato.gov.au/Individuals/Super/Growing-yoursuper/Adding-to-my-super/Personal-super-contributions/.

Cold weather gardening
WATERING your garden in the middle of winter probably seems unnecessary. Unfortunately, when we are not seeing much rain and are having a few heavy frosts the ground is surprisingly dry. Any moisture we are getting from heavy dew and showers may not be enough to sustain your garden through the winter without supplementary watering. Pots may need a top up a couple of times a week depending on where they are situated, and the garden may only need watering once a week or so.
garden bed that you can see from a window will brighten up your winter garden and you can enjoy them from inside where it is warm. If you haven’t gotten around to pruning, now is the time to get it done. Pruning and tidying up your roses and fruit trees it so much easier when you can see the ‘framework’ without the leaves. Completing these tasks now will mean your plants will be ready to burst to life come spring and you can enjoy all your hard work. Stay warm and happy gardening.
For those of you that like to grow your own potatoes, now is the time to find them at the nursery. You don’t plant them until September/October, but buy them now to ensure you don’t miss out. You just need to store them in the shed until it is time to plant. The cold weather doesn’t always motivate us to get outside. If you are feeling the winter blues and are sick of being stuck inside a bit of fresh air and getting your hands dirty will go a long way to lift your mood. Planting some flowers in pots or a

FEATURE STORY
Canine Parvovirus MANY of you may have heard of parvovirus in dogs, it is a highly contagious virus which can be fatal. Young puppies and unvaccinated dogs are most susceptible which makes it incredibly important to ensure your pet is kept up to date with vaccinations. How is parvovirus spread? The virus is shed in faeces and vomit, and is picked up by come into contact with contaminated material. It is a very hardy virus and can survive years in the environment. Dogs usually begin to show symptoms five to seven days after infection. Infected dogs begin shedding virus even before they show signs of illness and may continue shedding for up to 30 days. What are the clinical signs? Once the virus enters a dog it spreads to many tissues and replicates. Clinical signs of parvovirus infection include lethargy, inappetance and fever, followed by vomiting and bloody diarrhoea. Some dogs may have such rapid onset of illness that they die suddenly without showing many symptoms. What is the treatment? A diagnosis of parvovirus is confirmed with a faecal test. Treatment of parvovirus infection involves hospitalisation with

with Freya Williams VETERINARIAN IV fluids, antibiotics, pain relief and intensive supportive care so that the intestines can heal. Without treatment more than 90 per cent of infected dogs will die. With early, aggressive treatment survival rates can be over 80 per cent. Dogs that have been treated for parvovirus should be isolated for 30 days from other dogs as they may still be shedding the virus. After this time period, all areas they have had access to should be decontaminated. How is parvovirus prevented? Parvovirus is easily prevented by vaccination. Puppies should be vaccinated at six to eight weeks, 1012 weeks and 14-16 weeks of age. Booster vaccinations (yearly or three year vaccines) are required to keep immune levels high. Vaccinated dogs may become infected with the virus, however they generally show very mild or no symptoms at all. Puppies that have not had their final vaccinations should be kept away from areas that are possibly contaminated and socialised in safe environments with vaccinated dogs.

Moreno said he has come back to the area for regular visits over the years, including school reunions. Wishing to create a record of the town he came from, as well as give people an insight into how migrants feel when leaving their home in search of a better life, Moreno recently published his debut book, The Fireflies of Autumn. He said he wrote the book, full of stories about the village of San Ginese, in “fits and starts” over the course of eight years after reflecting on the life his parents had led, and added that by writing about the struggles and feelings of immigrants, he wanted to underline the things people have in common. Reflecting on the current insular and nationalist global political climate, Moreno said “the more people know about each other, especially about people who on the surface look different, with different customs, religions and so on, the better it is, because in the end you see that there are a lot of similarities between people, regardless of where they come from”. He pointed out that there was a time people were distrustful and wary of those in the Catholic community, and many were discriminated against in work and other areas of their lives. “It’s when you don’t know about the way of life of other people that you can become so worried about them, and it’s then that nasty politicians exploit the fear we have about people we don’t know,” Moreno said. “Interaction and knowledge of each other’s histories and stories is one way to break down barriers. “Get out there and eat together, and talk, and visit each other’s houses and get the children to play together.” Moreno said writing the book was an unforgettable experience. “Writing the book and getting it published has been an emotional rollercoaster,” he said. “It’s one of the greatest things I’ve

more information and talk to local sources for his next book, which will be set in the area and focus on Italian communities. “I look forward to it,” he said. The Fireflies of Autumn is published by Black Inc Books and is out now.

FOOD TALK
Amulet Vineyard 2015 Barbera YEARS ago I decided that if certain plants didn’t survive in my garden, or were going to be too fussy, then I’d simply get rid of them. Life’s too short to be running around guarding something from frost one season, only to shield them with shade cloth the next, in the hope of keeping them alive and happy. If you can’t stand the heat, get out of my garden, because I don’t want little teepees everywhere and there are other species that actually love my place and will thrive there. So congratulations to Ben Clifton at Amulet Vineyard and Winery for having the patience to persist with Barbera, which he says has been giving him grief since he first planted it in 1999. The high maintenance grapes have very thin skin, which means if there is late rain during vintage the sensitive souls will turn up their toes. But it seems persistence pays off and the 2015 has made it all worthwhile.
with Anita McPherson The wine has a very dark, burgundy colour and vibrant fruity aroma of black cherries with a hint of spice. There’s juiciness to the flavour, loaded with punchy cherry and plum, but with an earthy backdrop. It would make an ideal partner to game like venison or roo, the fruitiness and length of flavour complementing any succulent meat. We’re so lucky Ben has more patience than me. Pineapple coconut crumble THIS sweet treat serves four and is by Dr Joanna McMillan for Australian Pineapples. More recipes like this can be found at australianpineapples.com.au. Method Preheat the oven to 180°C. Heat a large non-stick frying pan over a medium heat, add 2 tbsp of brown sugar, cook for 2 minutes or until the sugar starts to melt and caramelise. Add the pineapple, cook for 5-7 minutes or until golden and tender, stirring occasionally. Set aside.
To make the crumble, rub the coconut oil into the coconut flour in a mixing bowl until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Mix through the remaining brown sugar and macadamias. Divide the stewed pineapple between four small ramekins, or one baking dish with a four cup capacity, and top with the crumble mixture. Bake in the oven for 30 minutes until golden brown on top. Serve the crumble with thick natural yoghurt on the side.

TECH & SCIENCE
with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ WHERE WE’RE GOING, WE DON’T NEED ROADS: A concept rendering of Uber’s sky car, which should soon be tested in either Melbourne or Sydney.
Meet George Jetson - intra-city flying transport AS a future enthusiast, there are quite a few things I’d love to see become a reality in my lifetime. Holograms, a manned mission to Mars, human-like robots, a cure for cancer, the hoverboard from Back to the Future part two, and intra-city flying transport. And while many of these have already received substantial resources and development, there’s no way to know for certain if we’ll see them all, as we might imagine them, in this century. But it does look as though at least one of these marvelous technological innovations are about to see the light of day - a real, flying public transport network, and in Mel-
bourne or Sydney, no less. And it comes in the form of UberAIR - an exciting program that would see futuristically designed helicopters whizzing over the top of cities from one port to another. Dallas and Los Angeles have previously been selected as the first two cities to instigate Uber’s flying transport system, and now the company is looking for an international candidate - us. Now we’re talking. The California big-wig’s of Uber flew over to Australia in June to begin talks with our politicians and transport authorities, and have announced the program could be tested here as soon as 2020. If everything goes to plan,
barring any unforeseen roadblocks (or ‘skyblocks’ I guess), passengers might be able to use Uber’s cheap, public “flying cars” by 2023 - drastically reducing travel times within our cities. Uber has even identified possible routes for its aircraft, showing a two-hour trip by car in Sydney, for example, could become a 20-minute trip by UberAIR. In a mission statement, an Uber spokesperson said, ‘Every day, millions of hours are wasted on the road worldwide. ‘In Sydney, residents spend seven whole working weeks each year commuting, two of which are wasted unproductively stuck in gridlock.
‘On-demand aviation has the potential to radically improve urban mobility, giving people back time lost in their daily commutes. ‘Uber is close to the commute pain that citizens in cities around the world feel.’ Well, count me in. Uber has stated that the best cities to demonstrate its program are those with high population density and heavy traffic, particularly to an airport, making our cities prime candidates for an international launch. If successful, local developers in Melbourne or Sydney will work with Uber to build 25 skyports dotted around either city. The way the transport sys-
tem will work will be very similar to how Uber’s current car transport system works. Passengers will request a lift using an app, catch an Uber car to a Skyport, embark on the short flight, and then catch another Uber car to reach their final destination. Ideally, it’s hoped that at least some of the skyports will be close to shopping districts in the cities. And for those fearing for public safety with the advent of a swarm of spinning blades whizzing overhead, Uber’s engineering director of aviation, Mark Moore, told FlightGlobal that established helicopter routes above cities will make travelling by air over short distances far
safer than it is today. ‘One of the reasons why helicopter safety is not as good as other [aircraft] safety is because there is a high degree of operational uncertainty,’ he said. ‘We have a huge operational advantage in terms of safety where we are always repeating the same thing — a trip from a sky port to a sky port. ‘The geography is well known; the structures are well known; the support and sky port is known, and part of our integrated network structure.’ Uber should announce the successful candidate city by the end of the year. What would be the odds that we could convince Uber to build a skyport here?

with Kylie Wilson WHILE I don’t consider myself a huge game show fan, I do occasionally enjoy watching the odd episode here and there to kill time and challenge my brain to see if I could be competitive in such a situation. I did find myself intrigued by the setup of new game show Pointless, which recently premiered on WIN. Co-hosted by comedian
and writer, Mark Humphries, and Dr Andrew Rochford, Pointless sees three teams compete each night. Faced with questions from a wide range of general knowledge topics including sport, music, celebrities and science, players must produce the least obvious answers in order to progress towards the nightly jackpot. To find out the points value

of each answer, 100 people are surveyed, and it is sort of a reverse Family Feud situation where you want to find the least popular answer. Unbeknownst to me, Point-
less has been a long running smash hit in the UK since 2009 and is seen on screens all over the world, and it is entertaining to try to figure out how you would arrive at an
obscure answer for the question. The holy grail in the show is coming up with a correct answer that literally no one else has, which are the “pointless”
answers of the title. While I doubt I will watch it regularly, Pointless is sure to capture the attention of quiz show fanatics and stretch their brain power.
