DAVID Tharratt is helping change the lives of young orphans in Kenya. Together with members of his family living at Oxley, and fellow community minded locals - predominantly from Wangaratta’s Wesleyan Methodist Church - he has been involved with helping the Tumani Miles of Smiles orphanage and school since 2008. The centre was established in 2004 by Kenyan woman Rose Bugusu, the youngest of a poverty stricken family of six children who wanted to improve things for her community. The orphanage began with just 12 children, and now looks after a population of 66 children, while the school began with a small population of 80-100 children and now educates over 300. David and his companions have made many trips to help part of the orphanage building, as well as the school. On their last visit they were hard at work making desks for the school, not only for the children but for the staff. “There’s never a shortage of things to do,” he said, saying if they’re not making bricks for construction, then they could be teaching a class. “It’s always good to see them.” When not in Kenya, David and his family and friends sponsor a number of children at the school and orphanage, as well as fundraising for sponsorship of other children and the centre. continued page |

Body odor

A cutting dilemma

WITH SOPHIE ATKIN, NATUROPATH

DRINK UP: Drink plenty of water. Dehydration can lead to a dry tongue causing bad morning breath.

Often, a food intolerance will cause this and can make you really gassy. This is the same as a compost bin that smells when it is not breaking down properly. You have a cold: the common cold, sinus and lung infections that cause mucous to drip through the mouth and throat contain bacteria that lead to stinky breath. In a healthy person, the first sign of an infection is often smelly pits and a sign

WITH winter the peak pruning time, a good pair of secateurs is a must. But shopping for secateurs can be confusing with so many to choose from. So where do you start? As secateurs get a lot of use, handle a few different pairs and choose the one that feels most comfortable for your hand size. Many have shaping for your fingers to wrap around. Ones with metal handles are the strongest and last the longest. The better ones have plastic coated handles as bare metal can be cold to touch and work with. Make sure the secateurs are not too weighty and the safety catch can be used easily with one hand. Basically secateurs can be divided into three groups: Bypass, Parrot Beak and Anvil. Bypass secateurs have a cutting blade and a fixed blade. They work similarly to scissors with the two blades bypassing each other. They are the most common and the best for cutting green wood up to thumb thickness. Any thicker and you risk damaging the blade. Parrot Beak secateurs have two blades which look like a parrot’s beak and cut by meeting together in the middle. Anvil secateurs have an upper blade

they need to rest, increase vitamin C and water. Starting a low carb diet: if you are not eating enough carbs and start to use your fats and proteins as energy the body releases a chemical that smells sweet on the breath. This is also common in diabetics. Dehydration: if you don’t drink enough water so that your wee is clear and your tongue is wet you will probably produce smelly morning breath.

which comes down onto a flat surface similar to a knife on a chopping board. These are more suited to cutting thicker wood or dead wood, rather than green wood which can be squashed or bruised rather than cut cleanly. Variations to the basic secateurs include ratchet style secateurs which cut in three small steps and require less effort and are useful if you have a weak grip or arthritis. Another option available is secateurs with a rolling handle to aid in cutting. Like anything, price does reflect the quality and longevity of the secateurs. Prices range from around $5 up to $150. The cheaper models may last a few seasons while the more expensive ones can last decades. An added bonus is the more expensive ones can be sharpened many times with spare parts like blades, safety catches and springs available. Buy what you can afford, keep them clean and maintained. NO one wants to be the stinky one, but everything we eat, drink and even stress about is eliminated through sweat, bowels and wee and has the potential to turn into a body odor. Smells try to escape from the body through the breath, feet and sweat glands and it turns out that there are some smells that no amount of scrubbing, washing or deodorant applying can cover. Here are some tips for the common reasons we get stinky. Stress: have you ever noticed that when you are nervous or stressed you get clammy and hot? Stress sweat is chemically different to regular sporty sweat. It has less water and bacteria love it. Alcohol: any time you drink, your body will sweat out some of the booze. If you have had more than your liver can handle (hangover) or are generally unhealthy you will produce a more stinky sweat as the body tries to break it down and get it out. Composting gut: when there is an imbalance of good and bad bacteria in the gut you can get a fermented or ‘poo’ smell on the breath.

ovaries, antibiotics and fluid therapy is the treatment of choice for pyometra. This procedure effectively treats the condition and prevents it from recurring. Early diagnosis and surgical treatment of pyometra has a very favorable prognosis, however, left untreated the toxic effects of infection can be fatal. Desexing your female dog at a young age or after her last litter of pups eliminates the risk of pyometra developing entirely and can save both you and your pet many worries in the future. Cheeky, bright eyed Moses came to the orphanage as a baby - he was found in a marketplace, wrapped in a paper bag and with a plastic bag for a nappy. Now an energetic six year old, Moses’ wide smile is a highlight of their visits. “The difference we’ve seen in him is just unbelievable…he’s a vibrant little kid,” David said, cherishing the simple time spent playing games or reading with the children the most. “You just feel like you’re making a difference in their lives.” David said support from people in the North East has been much appreciated and humbling, and his exposure in Kenya certainly makes him grateful for what you have here in Australia. “It changes your priorities and makes you realise that the majority of the world lives in much worse conditions than we do,” he said. Anyone seeking more information on making donations, or supporting an upcoming concert for the orphanage cause can contact David on (03) 5727 3539. More information about the orphanage is also available on: www.tumainimilesofsmiles.org.

They’re currently fundraising for a trade school to be built on the site, helped along by an anonymous $30,000 donation to buy land, and a $29,000 Federal Government grant through the Australian High Commission in Nairobi towards building the school. David plans to return to Kenya for the opening of the trade school in the next few months, optimistic about the opportunities it can create. He said many of the area’s residents are subsistence farmers, growing enough to feed their families, or have low paying jobs earning as little as $2 a day. “Most of them live day to day,” he said. He believes education is a key for people looking to escape the cycle of poverty and create a better life for themselves and their families. Growing the orphanage, establishing a high school, increasing the organisation’s self-sufficiency, and adding a community workshop or guest house are all among future plans for the site. “We do it for the kids,” David said, flicking through photos of smiling Kenyan children, with one in particular very special to the family.

BRIGHT FUTURE: Some of the students that have been studying at the school attached to the orphanage.

IF your mature female dog is not desexed, she is at risk of developing a condition called pyometra. Pyometra is an infection in the uterus which can have severe, life threatening consequences. The disease occurs most commonly in dogs over five years of age, approximately four to six weeks after they come on heat. As dogs age, the lining of the uterus undergoes changes including cystic endometrial hyperplasia which results in increased uterine secretions. This combined with the hormonal changes of coming on heat predispose these animals to developing intra-uterine infections. Bacteria such as E. coli are able to enter the uterus while the dog is on heat and the cervix is open. After the dog has gone off heat the bacteria become trapped and continue to grow resulting in the formation of pus in the uterus. This infection can then make the dog very ill, with clinical signs including fever, lethargy, reduced interest in food, increased thirst and possible vomiting. There may or may not be discharge from the vulva depending on how tightly sealed the cervix is. The diagnosis of pyometra is based primarily on the history and clinical examination of your dog, sometimes blood tests, x-rays or ultrasound may be required to confirm the diagnosis. Surgical removal of the entire uterus and

Wintry weather ushers in the snow LAST week’s wintry weather conditions have certainly put big smiles on the faces of those at the North East’s alpine resorts. During the midweek blizzards, Hotham Alpine Resort received over 50cm of snow in 24 hours, while Falls Creek received over 55cm. Other North East alpine areas also received their fair share of snow. Falls Creek events this week include the debut of this year’s Night Show Spectacular and Fireworks events at Village Bowl. These events will take place every Thursday from this week until August 28 and are an exciting family spectacle under lights. July 5-6 will also see a variety of skiers gain valuable racing experience in the Snowracer Series. Mt Hotham will play host this Saturday to the ALCP Bread and Butters Rail Jam. This event launches this season’s ski and snowbard events and prospective entrants can register at the Hotham Central Events Desk. This weekend, July 5-6, will also see the mountain host the Australian Biathlon and Paul Family Weekend, and Snowboard Demo Days from a variety of prominent brands. From July 5 until August 29, people can take part

in the Salomon Quest Mountain Challenge, where skiers can use a passport to help them explore the mountain. At Mt Buller, people can participate in the Mark Adams Ski and Golf Day on July 4, while the Snowracer series will take place on July 6. Mount Buffalo National Park offers free entry, groomed and supervised toboggan and snow play areas at Cresta and Dingo Dell, over 14 kilometres of groomed cross country ski trails, limitless ungroomed skiing, and more. At the time of going to press chains were required to be carried on the road to Mt Buffalo and fitted when directed – check with your nearest visitor information centre or ski hire shop for up to date conditions. Search the web for the latest snow reports and up to date conditions on local mountains, or consult the staff at your nearest visitor information centre.

Utopia by 360 THIS is a finely crafted, very precise and passionate album from 360, largely about the double edged sword of fame, the perils of flying too high, vulnerability and self-esteem - but also about maturity and how a young man that got too much too soon handles himself. 360 has created a unique world of hip-hop, with elements of pop, rock and dance; a brilliant and ambitious display of influences that come together seamlessly to pave a musical journey through his deepest, darkest imagination.

BOOK

Fashionably Worn by Leigh-Ann Pow THIS book takes its readers shopping at markets, auction houses, antique dealers, op shops (and the odd nature strip on council pick-up weekends) to find fashion, furniture and curios. Offering advice, tips and anecdotes covering everything from where to shop, how to secure what you want, and what to do with it all when it’s yours, Fashionably Worn is warm, witty and inspiring. Published by Harper Collins

I GUESS most people consider themselves to be average bears. Even me. Of course, my kids may think otherwise. They would point out my little eccentricities and, no doubt, numerous other things that set me apart from the rest of ‘normal’ humankind. I guess that’s not all bad, though. After all, do I really want to be the same as everyone else? Is ‘normal’ such a prized state? And what defines normal anyway? Is it someone who never pushes the boundaries, never takes a risk, doesn’t have any quirky little habits and never does or says silly things in public? If so, who is this Mr or Ms Normal? I’d like to meet them – if they exist. You see, I don’t think I actually know anybody who’s completely ‘normal’ (ie without quirks or eccentricities). Pretty much everyone I know has some strange little foibles. And that’s just fine to me. It’s what makes them who they are. It does, however, make me think about some kids from my childhood who were considered to be ‘different’. At the time, we simply found them a bit odd or quirky but, despite those kinds of judgements, we (and they) also fully expected they would achieve and fulfil their life’s goals. We had no reason to think otherwise. They were just a bit unusual. No big deal. But I do wonder if those very same kids who seemed a bit odd, socially awkward, or who showed some very specific aptitude, knowledge or obsessive interest would, these days, have been given an ‘official’ label? And if so, is it possible that such a label might have become a barrier for them? Could they have started believing they had a deficit and never reached their full potential? Thankfully, I guess we’ll never know. I’ve personally known several brilliant, high functioning and high profile people who have been somewhat ‘unusual’. These people turned their quirkiness, or savant-type memories, incredible creativity,

BY CATHERINE WARNOCK ability to concentrate, keen focus on their subject of choice or their orderly self-discipline into life and career-enhancing assets. One of these people, for example, was not only an amazing leader in her field, but had an incredible ability to remember people’s names and titbits about their lives. As a person who could so easily have been awkward in social situations, this lady mesmerised and endeared people with her ability to recall the minutiae of their lives and make them feel special. Another person I knew was highly (and some might say, compulsively) organised. He very wisely chose a career in which being meticulous is much valued. Both of these people told me they had wonderful teachers and mentors in their lives who taught them to value their strengths and encouraged them to reach for their goals. This, to them, was what made the difference. Now, I must point out, that in wondering what effect ‘labelling’ may or may not have had on the above children from ‘days or yore’, I’m certainly not dismissing the very important role of early intervention and support. After all, there’s a lot of new knowledge out there - which is great, as we know that some developmental or personality disorders can be very debilitating. Armed with this knowledge, the appropriate strategies, teachers and mentors can be actively sought out to help all kinds of children on their individual paths. But ultimately, we can’t forget that our differences make us who we are. So instead of focusing on the ‘labels’, perhaps we need to flip them over and check out the ‘Care Instructions’ first. After all, what matters most is how we see ourselves and how we are treated. And as for me? Well, note to my kids. If you already think I’m no Josephine Average as I enter my ‘mature’ years, then hold onto your hats. You ain’t seen nothing yet.

WITH ANITA McPHERSON match for spicy Asian dishes. This Rutherglen wine has an inviting golden color and the aroma of citrus blossom, golden delicious apple and a touch of vanilla. It also has mouth-filling and fruity flavors of apple and citrus which just keep on giving, along with a pleasantly cleansing finish. While it would be nice to wait and see how it ages, it’s just fine right now and marries beautifully with the rich and spicy, prawn-infused liquid. I prefer my wine to be smooth and my soupy dishes to have the glorious lumps and bumps nature intended. Available at local outlets or visit www.warrabillawines. com.au.

WITH BRONWYN INGLETON THIS dish in another language is called good old fashioned Irish stew, but nowadays we don’t like those names. Some restaurants rename them so they can charge a premium price, I don’t condone this practice, but in this economy I do understand it When I cooked this at the café every one said the smell was wonderful and tasted fabulous as well. Method Trim chops. Place flour in a plastic dish wide enough to fit a chop in season with salt and pepper. Shake chops of extra flour. In a frying pan add some oil, then chopped onions, fry until soft, transfer to an oven proof dish. Fry the floured and seasoned chops until brown transfer them to the oven proof dish in layers with the carrots and the potatoes.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

Skating in Wangaratta, 1887 ROLLER skating was introduced to Wangaratta, with a venue opening at the Theatre Royal. For the admission price of sixpence, skates were provided. A few went to skate, most went to watch the skaters falling over. Roller skating had become a fascination in the North East since a man named Spiller, who billed himself as a champion skater, had toured the area in 1869.

Whisk the tomato paste with the chicken stock. Pour over to just cover. Cover with a lid and cook in a 160deg oven for 1 to 1 ½ hours or until tender and the sauce is thick. Sprinkle with the chopped parsley and serve with peas if you want.

Ingredients > 1 kg lamb chump chops or lamb neck chops trimmed > ½ cup plain flour > 3 brown onions, chopped > 1kg potatoes, peeled, sliced d > 2 carrots, peeled, thinly slice into rounds > 2 tablespoons tomato paste > 3 cups chicken stock (approximately) > 1 cup flat-leaf parsley leaves, chopped

IT seems we need an all-new and purpose built appliance taking up residence on our kitchen benches if we want to make nutritious soup at home. I don’t know what we were thinking all those years as we put ingredients in a saucepan and placed it on the stove, but apparently that was way too complicated. Now we can put our ingredients into a blender which heats up, which is obviously much easier. If it also drove to the market for me and picked out the seasonal vegetables and herbs I wanted to use, I might just be sold, but then I’d miss out on some cheeky banter with the friendly providores. The best dishes require the personal touch, and I couldn’t imagine not being stoveside and enjoying the aroma coming from a steaming pot of Laksa. I’d also have a glass of Warrabilla Wines Riesling in my hand, which is an ideal

With more than 10 million visits a year, the Fair Work Ombudsman website is already a popular resource for advice and assistance. For example, the site now features an interactive Online Learning Centre, which has already attracted more than 10,000 users. “Equipping people with information on which they can act helps to create fair and productive workplaces. “It gives employers confidence they are meeting their obligations, and employees confidence they are getting paid correctly, Ms James said. Employers and employees seeking further information and advice can call the Fair Work Infoline on 131394. A free interpreter service is also available on 131450. MONEY MATTERS

BUSINESS AND FINANCE

And the tax man cometh

Campaign warns of tax time scams THE ATO is reminding taxpayers to be wary of scams this tax time as fraudsters become more ambitious in their efforts to dupe the public of their personal information. Since March 1, 2014 the ATO has seen a spike in reports from the public of email and phishing scams from 9368 to 11,344 compared with the same period last year. “Your personal information is the key to your identity. “Protecting it is as important as locking your front door each day,” chief technology officer Todd Heather said. To increase community awareness of scams the ATO is launching a new video campaign on ato.gov.au/identitycrime with

helpful tips to protect personal information. Some of the tips include: t Never put your tax file number (TFN) on your resume. Only give it to your employer after you have started your job. t Never share personal information, such as your TFN, myGov or bank account details on social media. t Change any passwords you may have shared with family or friends. t If you use a tax agent, make sure they are registered by checking at www.tpb.gov.au/ onlineregisterExternal Link. If you think your TFN has been stolen or misused, call the ATO on 1800 467 033 (8am–6pm, Monday to Friday).

MONDAY saw the end of another financial year and I am sure the taxman has a lot in store when you lodge your tax return. None of us like paying tax, but rest assured over the last year the taxman and his band of merry men (and women) have been looking at returns lodged in 2013 and making decisions about what and where they will put their resources, so that you and I, if we haven’t already done so, will pay our share of tax for distribution to those less fortunate. I cannot be more frank than to say “if you want to try and cheat the tax department, then make sure when they come a-knocking you are able to provide the necessary answers”. Gone are the days when men whose wife was not in the work force could pay extra tax and receive a refund that was worthwhile for the time and effort. These days they need every cent to help pay for our standard of living and the taxman doesn’t like large refunds either. So is your occupation one of those on the hit list this year? Every year we hear of them making attacks on tradies and their work related expenses, but this year indications are that anyone working from home and anyone claiming work related expenses will be on the hit list. The ATO has so much computing power they will be able to check the legitimacy of every single tax return, and from my observations they probably will. Our tax system is a self-reporting system, which means you have the responsibility for the accuracy of what is in your return. But the ATO will data match some 650 million separate transactions this year – cross referencing bank accounts, share certificates, payments from Centrelink and more. We often wondered why the banks asked

By KEN CLARKE, WANGARATTA CERTIFIED PRACTICING ACCOUNTANT

kclarke@alphalink.com.au for our tax file number - now we know, as their reporting of everyone who has earned interest on an account is now reported to the ATO. I understand that following lodgement of 2013 income tax returns the ATO sent out 500,000 ‘please explain’ letters which netted an additional $973 million from individual taxpayers. In my reading this week, I came across an article in which the author likened the ATO super computer to a sniffer dog at the airport. There are rules around what you can legitimately claim as a work related expense and they are as strict as they are varied, but if you do not have a receipt then don’t claim a deduction. The ATO is looking at people lodging by ETax or now MyTax so if this is the way for you, be sure your have all the documentation. As we use our mobile phones more and more, use this as a digital record of your receipts (the ATO allows electronic copies of receipts) and open a folder in your email entitled 2015 Income Tax receipts. This way you will not miss a legitimate claim and when the tax man comes a-knocking, produce the evidence that this is how you have prepared your return. Don’t get me wrong, most of us try and be reasonable when completing our return, but those with claims that sit outside the ambit of the ATO guidelines can expect to be followed up, first with a please explain and then a request to produce the documents to substantiate the claim. If no document, an amended return will follow and there will be the question of penalty interest too. So, check the ato.gov.au website and look for work related deductions.
