THE year was 1974, and while history was being made around the world with the first surviving sextuplets born in Cape Town, the final episode of The Brady Bunch airing in America and ABBA winning the Eurovision Song Contest with ‘Waterloo’, three young lads from Wangaratta were preparing to take part in a competition. Adrian Kiker began his motor mechanic apprenticeship at Carmody Motors in February 1966 following schooling at St Patrick’s and Our Lady’s, with a four-year stint at Champagnat College before finding his way to the Greta Road Technical School, which was where all young men went if their intention was to go into a trade. While Adrian completed his apprenticeship, Carmody Motors became Pat Heffernan Motors (later Heffernan & Rees and now Ovens Ford) and in 1974, Adrian, along with workmates Les Brown and Neville McPherson, learned of a competition to be held in Albury that August. A keen ‘rep’ who often visited Pat Heffernan Motors and sold them parts was involved in running the Trade Fair and Motor Exhibition and told Adrian, Les and Neville that they should make up a team and have a go. But what was the competition? What would they have to do? The rep explained the competition and the three Wangaratta boys got down to the business of ‘giving it a go’. “Basically we had to reassemble a motor as fast as we could, and it had to run,” Adrian explained. “But there was a lot involved in that; the motor had to be completely dismantled, all valves and springs had to come out of the head manifolds, off the fuel pump and carburettor, pistons had to be out of blocks as well as the rings, bearings and crankshaft.

New changes to microchipping animals in Victoria A MICROCHIP is a small radio-frequency identification device which is implanted into the subcutaneous tissue of an animal to provide electronic identification of the animal. All cats and dogs over the age of three months must be registered with the local council, which requires the pet to be microchipped. Domestic animal (microchip) registries hold the records for cats, dogs and horses registered in Victoria. It is important to remember to update your residential and contact details with the appropriate register if your details change. The information attached to your pet’s microchip can only be accessed by approved persons and is crucial in returning your pet home if they are lost. In 2019, the Victorian pet exchange register was introduced. The pet exchange register is an online database where individuals and busi-

The register assists in the traceability of dogs and cats in Victoria and protects animal welfare. Under Victorian legislation, it is an offence to advertise any dog or cat for sale or giveaway without a valid microchip number and a source number. We recommend checking with the seller that the pet you are buying has a microchip and a valid source number. You can check the validity of a seller on the pet exchange register prior to purchasing your new pet. Please contact your local veterinarian, council, or the pet exchange register if you have any concerns.

Violet Daisy Bush DURING late winter when sunlit days begin to lengthen, plants respond, buds emerge and petals unfurl, a harbinger of the spring bonanza is a delightful understorey plant: Olearia iodochroa - The Violet Daisy Bush. Both its botanical and common names aptly describe the masses of daisy flowers with a dark purple ‘eye’ surrounded by paler blue petals. Ask children to draw a flower, and they probably will draw a daisylike flower. Daisies are arguably the most common plant family in the world. There are about 32,000 species in the daisy [Asteraceae] family, subdivided into over 1900 genera in 13 subfamilies. The name Asteraceae comes from the type genus Aster, from the Ancient Greek word for star. The word ‘daisy’ is derived from the Old English for ‘day’s eye’, re-

ferring to the petals which open at dawn and close at dusk. Some daisy species, e.g. sunflowers [Helianthus annuus] ‘track’ the daily path of the sun. To the casual observer, daisy flowers may be common, but they are not simple. The photo above is a close-up of the flowers of O. iodochroa. Each petal surrounds a central disc which contains many tiny tubular five-petalled florets. During flowering time, the florets open progressively from the outer edge towards the centre of the flower. This aids in ensuring genetic diversity of seed by visiting pollinators. At the base of the flower are the ovaries, which, following pollination, develop seeds. Within each floret is a central pistil topped by a stigma; part of the female reproductive organ that receives pollen.
The seeds are attached to a hairy ‘parachute’ or achene, which utilises the wind for seed dispersion. The genus Olearia was named after the German botanist Adam Olearious. Olearia occur only in the southern hemisphere. There are approximately 180 species. Australia has about 130, mostly growing in South Eastern Australia and in Tasmania. O. iodochroa grows well in freedraining soil in dappled shade and can be successfully grown in pots. The flowers are well displayed and long-lasting. Pruning from an early stage will maintain compact form. New growth will appear within two months. O. Iodochroa strikes readily from cuttings or may be grown from seed. The seed should be collected as soon as it is ripe, as it is quickly dispersed by the wind.

Stanton & Killeen Wines 2019 Chardonnay A PARTIAL kitchen renovation has left me flapping around the room like a chook with its head cut off. Having removed all the contents of the cupboards and put them into another room, and had the sink taken away, I’ve discovered how much of my cooking was being done on autopilot. Everything I needed was in arms reach and grabbed without me even looking and now I have no idea what to do or where anything is. I’d also like a dollar for every time I’ve gone to turn on the tap that isn’t there. Thankfully it’s not going to be like this for long and in the meantime we’ll make do with reheated meals I’ve had frozen and some take away roast chicken. And a bottle of Rutherglen’s Stanton & Killeen Wines Chardonnay is an easy way to elevate a roast chicken dinner. The golden, straw coloured wine has wonderfully familiar aroma; hinting at honeysuckle blossom and vanilla. It has a fruity flavour which leans toward nectarine with the

freshness of citrus, and while it’s crisp and dry, there’s also some spice - the flavour lingering for quite a while in the mouth. I like it lightly chilled which accentuates the citrus freshness of this young wine, and makes it a good partner for lighter dishes made from headless chooks. And there are going to be a lot of those until the kitchen equilibrium is restored.

The impact of COVID-19 on our clinic WHEN the hysteria of COVID-19 hit our multi-modality clinic, we as a community were just starting to see the financial, mental and physical health impacts from long-term drought and recent horrific bushfires. Then people had to literally shut down and isolate (their emotional, physical and mental health took a back step with initial COVID-19 restrictions). As Sophie was nearing her pregnancy due date we made the decision to move our naturopathy business to online/phone model to reduce foot traffic in our clinic and allow our receptionists to remain employed and our body therapists to continue to work. Our reception and building has stayed open the whole time and this has been a great display of our team mentality in our clinic. We offered Zoom and phone ap-
pointments, but people in the country don’t really love all that ‘fancy zoomy zoomy thingo’ and our appointments were being cancelled at an alarming rate. It was heartbreaking seeing our naturopathy business grind to a sudden halt in the bid to keep our entire building open. With Sophie now on maternity leave and Belinda back in the clinic, Belinda has been like a free solo climber in a race for the world title. Clients have come out of the woodwork, some we haven’t seen for five to eight years and we are inundated with new patients. Belinda had been preparing herself to have lots of conversations about the immune system, but the reality is that our conversations have been wide and varied, with every client seeking support in different ways.
In reflection of the past couple of months, it has reminded Belinda that naturopathy is simple: give people the space to tell you their story, listen, remind them that it’s ok to feel like this and support them to improve their gut health, have down time for mental health, eat a wide variety of food, have a good sleep routine and a good regular poo doesn’t hurt either. More often than not you don’t need to focus on fancy expensive diagnostic testing. Good health can be simple and this is what our community is looking for - simple, easy to achieve changes that they can do even through the hardest of times. COVID-19 has changed our business for the better so far, the clients that are coming to us are genuinely interested in their health and are curious about what we have to offer. And boy do we have a lot to offer.

THE formal opening of the North Eastern Railway to Seymour occurred today and had been declared a public holiday in the town. Two special trains bearing five hundred guests, including the Governor and his family, arrived to a welcome that was apparently less than satisfactory. According to reports of the day, the band committed grievous bodily harm on The Queen, its playing of the Anthem leaving much to be desired, and then the welcoming party ignored the Governor, as the Shire had been informed that he was not coming.

“We then had to assemble the 160 pieces of the motor with a frictionmodified oil supplement and start it up and run it in the engine stands provided - there were three engines there which belonged to the company who owned the oil supplements.” A couple of weeks before the trade fair, Adrian and his team, along with many other entrants, travelled to Albury to practise pulling the motor apart and reassembling it to figure out what system worked best. “You had to set out the section that each person was going to do to suit your individual team because you needed to be quick with all the tools,” Adrian said. “And you couldn’t bring your own tools - you had to use the ones supplied by the company who was running the competition so that no one had an advantage, so you had to get used to working with them too.” The day of the big event arrived and the trio did exceptionally well - taking out
first prize in a time of six minutes and 48 seconds, which Adrian said has caused a lot of discussion since. “People don’t believe me when I tell them the time we were able to do it in, they just don’t think it can be done, but we did it, we really did it that fast,” he said. “I tell them to go and find Graeme Jones’ book On This Day in the North East and they’ll see the details there in black and white. “People often take me up on the offer and go and look at it at the library and then come back and tell me they looked it up and saw it.” The prize for the winning team was a holiday to Hobart where Adrian, Les and Neville stayed at the local Travel Lodge which was ‘very upmarket’ at the time. “We took the holiday in January and went to Port Arthur and checked out as many tourist sites as we could,” he said. “When we travelled to Mt Wellington, we encountered snow, which you certainly don’t see here in Wangaratta at

any time, but especially in January.” Adrian, Les and Neville competed the following year and also won, but for some reason, that competition didn’t get quite as much attention as the year before, not that it bothered Adrian or the other boys. This year sees Adrian notch up his 53rd year at Carmody Motors-Pat Heffernan Motors- Heffernan & ReesOvens Ford and while he still catches up with Les Brown on occasion, he hasn’t seen Neville McPherson since Neville moved to Mornington about 10 years ago. “I don’t think I’m going to retire any time soon,” Adrian said. “I’d get bored.” One thinks though, with his love of cars stretching back further than the start of his apprenticeship, Adrian would be able to find something to keep him occupied around the house, after all, cars still need maintenance and upkeep, and maybe there’s an old one that might just have his name on it to tinker on and restore.

Minestrone soup THIS is part of a regular series featuring recipes that have become popular during the COVID-19 lockdown This recipe comes from Clare Schultz from Gateway Health. Clare shares her recipe for hearty minestrone soup. THIS is a recipe that I cook from the Eat for Health website. This soup is quick and easy and I use whatever vegetables I have in the fridge if I don’t have what is in the recipe. It is really tasty on a cold day with some nice bread! Serves six Ingredients: 1 medium brown onion, chopped 1 clove garlic, crushed 425g can crushed tomatoes 1 carrot, peeled and diced 2 sticks celery, sliced 1 large parsnip, peeled and diced
1 tablespoon tomato paste 1 bay leaf 4 cups beef stock 2 cups water ½ cup small pasta 6 Brussels sprout, finely sliced or 1 cup sliced cabbage 300g can four bean mix, rinsed and drained Method: Cook onion and garlic in a large pot with a little water until onion is translucent. Add tomato, carrot, celery, parsnip, tomato paste, bay leaf, beef stock and water. Bring to the boil, add the pasta and simmer for 15 minutes or until tender. Add Brussels sprout and beans. Cook for a further five minutes. Substitute lentils or butter beans for the four bean mix. Spinach or peas are tasty alternatives to Brussels sprout and cabbage.
The International Space Station WITH SpaceX’s Dragon - the first private, manned spacecraft to arrive and depart from the International Space Station - having successfully completed its mission one month ago, I thought we’d take a look at some interesting facts about the ISS. 1. Sixteen nations were involved in the construction of the ISS: The United States, Russia, Canada, Japan, Belgium, Brazil, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. 2. Made up of hundreds of major and minor components, the ISS is the largest manned object ever put into space. The ISS has a pressurised volume of 32,333 cubic feet, the same as a Boeing 747. It’s four times larger than the Russian space station MIR and five times larger than the U.S. station Skylab. 3. Sixty-five miles per hour may be a pretty standard speed limit on highways here on Earth, but up in orbit, the ISS travels a whopping five miles-persecond. That means the station circles the entire planet once every 90 minutes. 4. You may think your house or apartment is spacious, but
it’s got nothing on the ISS. At about 357.6 feet (or 109 metres) long, the International Space Station gives astronauts plenty of room to stretch out. 5. The ISS is the single most expensive object ever built. The cost of the ISS has been estimated at over $120 billion. 6. There are only two bathrooms on the entire station. The urine of both the crewmembers and laboratory animals is filtered back into the station’s drinking water supply, so at least the astronauts will never get thirsty. 7. The ISS is a veritable hub of space traffic. In June of 2014, four separate international spacecraft were docked there, including the Progress M-21M cargo spacecraft, which departed the station on June 9 after a six-month mission to drop off food, fuel, and supplies. In September, a resupply mission from SpaceX visited the station, and an entire new crew arrived that month as well. The station’s full flight schedule has docking events planned through the summer of 2016. 8. The ISS is probably one of the only places you can actually smell space. A former ISS astronaut has de-

scribed how a “metallic-ionisationtype smell” occurs in the area where the pressure between the station and other docking crafts is equalised. 9. Currently, the ISS is the third brightest object in the night sky after the moon and Venus. Eagle-eyed stargazers can even spot it if they look closely enough - it looks like a fastmoving airplane. If you can’t find it, NASA has a service called Spot the Station that texts you when and where it will pass over your location. If you want the opposite view (though I’m pretty sure you won’t be able to spot yourself), there is a live video feed pointing towards Earth that runs when the crew is off-duty. 10. Though the plan is to de-orbit the ISS in 2024, the oldest module of the station - the Russian-built and American-financed component called “Zarya,” first launched in 1998 - can function until 2028 (as will The Unity, the first entirely American ISS component, which was also launched that year). Once the ISS kicks the bucket, the Russians plan to add their leftover modules to their new station, OPSEK (or Orbital Piloted Assembly and Experiment Complex).
