FROM growing up in New Zealand, to travelling as a nanny for the rich and famous, Oxley’s Bridget Fitzpatrick has seen much of the world, but it’s the views from the summits of our local mountain trails which have provided inspiration for her new venture. With a life-long love of the outdoors, Bridget has always wanted to add hiking to her list of hobbies. “I’ve always wanted to get into hiking but never had anyone to do it with,” she said. That all changed when she met Scott and Jen Arnott through her current job at Northeast Health Wangaratta and learned they’d got engaged at the top of Feathertop. “I grew up in New Zealand and attended the Rangi Ruru Nanny School, graduating with a Distinction,” said Bridget. “I spent the next 18 years working for famous families, taking care of their newborns and specialising in the first 12 weeks of life,” she said. “I’ve lived in London, Scotland, Belfast, Geneva, Norway, Los Angeles and New York.”

Cushing’s syndrome in dogs CUSHING’S syndrome (or hyperadrenocorticism) in dogs is a relatively common hormone imbalance, where there is too much cortisol hormone in the blood stream. Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands, and is released in times of stress to help the body prepare for fight or flight situations. Symptoms of Cushing’s syndrome result when the body is exposed to too much cortisol over a long period of time, and can include drinking water excessively, a pot-bellied appearance, thinning of the hair coat, muscle loss, skin conditions, and repeated urinary tract infections. There are three main mechanisms that can lead to Cushing’s syndrome. In most cases the cause is a small tumour in the pituitary gland which over-produces a hormone called ACTH which causes the adrenal glands to produce too much cortisol. Less commonly the cause may be an adrenal tumour which directly produces excess cortisol. The third cause is long-term use of cortisone type medication which is commonly used to treat allergies and itchy skin in dogs. A general body function blood test can make us suspicious of Cushing’s

with By Linda Bradbury, Veterinarian disease if we see a certain change in the ratio of types of white blood cells, mild changes in liver enzymes, or elevated cholesterol. A further blood test called an ACTH stimulation test is required for a definitive diagnosis. An ultrasound of the adrenal glands can also be helpful in diagnosis. Cushing’s disease does not always require treatment. If the symptoms are very mild, then treatment may not be warranted. The most commonly usedmedication, trilostane, works by inhibiting the ability of the adrenal gland to produce cortisol. This carries some risk as the body requires a certain amount of cortisol to function and survive so if too much trilostane is given it can cause a potentially life threatening situation. Therefore frequent monitoring with blood tests is required for dogs on treatment for Cushing’s in order to ensure they maintain a safe level of cortisol. Contact your veterinarian if you think your dog may be showing signs of Cushing’s Syndrome.

◆ TIMING IS CRUCIAL: Leaf curl can be prevented with a copper-based fungicide.

What’s wrong with my leaf LEAF curl is a problem that occurs mainly on new emerging leaves on stone fruit like peaches, nectarines and sometimes apricots and almonds, usually in late winter to early spring, and causes an ugly distortion on young leaves, lumpy with a pinkish/purple tinge. Later, a white bloom appears on the surface and the leaves which fall and die, have you ever noticed this problem on your fruit trees and wondered ‘What’s wrong with my leaf? Well if you have seen this disease on your stone fruit it’s probably leaf curl - a fungal disease (Taphrina deformans) that attacks stone fruit. Leaf symptoms appear about two weeks after leaves emerge from buds. The fungus grows between leaf cells and stimulates them to divide and grow larger than normal, causing swelling and distortion of the leaf. Red plant pigments accumulate in the distorted cells. Cells of the fungus break through the cuticle of distorted leaves and produce elongated, sac-like structures called asci that produce spores called ascospores. The fungal spores take up residence over the winter months usually in leaf bud scales and other nooks

and crannies in your fruit tree’s trunk. Treatment is simple but timing is crucial. When the plant comes out of dormancy and the new leaf buds start to swell this is the best time to control leaf curl, using a fungicide containing copper oxychloride or copper hydroxide is sufficient. Thoroughly spray the tree paying close attention to the leaf bud and surrounding area, along the stems, branches and the bark. I usually find that two applications sprayed at two week intervals is enough to control this disease, thoroughly drench the tree to the point of run off. Do not apply after buds have burst it will be too late to control the disease. Although new leaves develop but if left uncontrolled the new growth will result in weakened stems and the tree and may reduce yield. Defoliation by leaf curl in successive seasons may also kill the tree. This disease can sometimes be confused with green aphid damage which also results in curled leaves treatment for this is completely different. So, to avoid that ugly look on your leaves inspect your stone fruit trees now for leaf bud swelling and apply a copper-based fungicide.

This Day in History, 1906 THE long serving editor of the Ovens and Murray Advertiser, Richard Warren, died on this day in 1906. Originally from Cornish, he arrived in Melbourne in the first days of the gold rush and worked on the Morning Herald, moving to Castlemaine two years later. From there he was taken to Beechworth to produce the Ovens and Murray Advertiser. He stayed with the paper from its inception, first as printer, then as proprietor and editor. At the time of his death at the age of 75, he was considered to be the oldest active newspaper proprietor in the state.

Natural fertility and pregnancy IF you have been struggling to fall pregnant, or are thinking about having a baby and want insights into what makes you feel good, what a truly healthy lifestyle is, what is damaging your health, well-being and fertility and most importantly, how to make lasting change that will affect not just your health, but that of your whole family- possibly for generations to come - then adding a naturopath to your fertility and pregnancy health team makes a lot of sense. We hope that at the end of your time working with us you will be holding your own baby, but also that you will have been educated and encouraged, motivated and engaged to improve your health and have health skills you can take into parenthood. There are many well-known and medically-researched factors that impact directly on your fertility outcomes

the bottom of your bodily priorities even in so-called healthy individuals. Extensive testing for nutrient levels, gland and organ function, infections, heavy metals and other contributing factors are all undertaken both in clinic with our NES system and food intolerance testing and case taking questionnaires as well as through pathology testing. Your family history is explored, and your personal medical and health history is extensively mined for clues as to anything that may compromise your fertility. This process is comprehensive, enlightening, empowering and most importantly takes you on a journey of continuous improvement that at the very least leaves you feeling healthy, energised and vital, and may help you achieve a healthy baby.

and naturopathic care goes into great detail to determine how they may affect you and how to manage these factors in a personal way. Some of these include: smoking, drinking alcohol, being overweight or underweight, advancing age, certain environmental and home chemical exposure, nutritional deďŹ ciencies and other factors that you will learn about working with when you see a naturopath. You won’t just walk away with a list of what to change or avoid, but what to add and how to improve your overall health. We also look at digestive problems, oral and dental health, asthma, sleep issues, stress, nutritional factors, even emotional considerations, which all together may add up to an unhealthy load that compromises the whole body and puts fertility right at

IT amazes me how precious some people can be about their pizza. Just like how you have your coffee, or how much vegemite you put on your toast, some people get so picky when it comes to preferred toppings, they’ll go hungry rather than pull unwanted bits off. There are fundamentalists who adhere to tradition and worship the Margherita, a handful of bi-partisans who are happy to go along with what everyone else wants, and radicals who insist on adding everything from ham and pineapple, to egg and extra anchovies. But some of us are also swingers, enjoying traditional one day, craving additions the next, and even using the thin and crispy base as a vehicle to elevate leftover vegies from the bottom of the fridge. It might be sacrilege, but ribbons of zucchini, pumpkin slices, onion and fetta will just have to do. Any way you like it, pizza is perfect with a glass of Dal Zotto Sangiovese. It has a ruddy garnet colour and sings with the aroma of savoury cherry fruit and wild herbs. The medium weight wine is vel-

Great Elevations - a spirit of adventure From page 1

When Bridget learned she was pregnant with her daughter Lauren, now 13, she left New York to be closer to her family who had moved to Australia. “My grandmother lived in Myrtleford so I have visited the North East my entire life,” she said. “Lauren was born in the same hospital I now work at, not that I had any idea that would be the case at the time.” It wasn’t until Lauren was five that Bridget enrolled at GOTAFE in the Advanced Enrolled Nurse with IVT (intravenous transfusion) course. Bridget now works in ‘Pool’ at Northeast Health, Wangaratta which she loves, as she never knows which part of the hospital she will be in for her shifts. “I’ve met so many fabulous nursing and medical staff throughout the organisation, including Jen and Scott,” she said. “They agreed to hike Feathertop with me and I asked a few others at the hospital I thought might be interested. “We ended up with six nurses and talked about how fun it would be to do it on a regular basis.” Sitting in the Bright Brewery at the end of the

day, the idea took hold and ST Elevation Hiking was born. For those unfamiliar with medical terminology, ST stands for Sinus tachycardia - an elevated sinus rhythm. In adults this equates to a heartbeat greater than 100 bpm (beats per minute). “When we reached the top of a particularly steep section that day, I was checking my heartrate and found that I’d gone into Sinus tachycardia,” Bridget said. “Being medical personnel, it seemed only fitting that we use a medical term for the group.” The ST Elevation Hiking logo further highlights this medical bent, featuring a hiker walking up the steep part of the cardio EGC rhythm. “We decided that the group would be a monthly hike for like-minded people who want to get out and explore our beautiful local environment,” Bridget said. “As medical workers, we’re always giving to others and this is about re-filling our own cup of wellbeing and doing something for ourselves with the support of colleagues. “Nurses and medical staff have a rather odd sense of humour and getting together like this

enables us to share some breathtaking views, debrief, laugh, share banter, and know we’re with people who ‘get it’. “We know that what we say will stay within the group. It’s a safe place to talk about what we’ve seen or had happened at work.” “But you don’t have to be a nurse or doctor to join, medical administration staff are also welcome.” “Everyone has a different level of fitness. You set your own personal goal, knowing your mates are there to encourage you.” Proper planning goes into each hike with the choice of venue shared between members. Whoever chooses the place then ‘runs’ the hike - organising maps, planning the trip and deciding on meeting points. Previous hikes have included part of the Hume and Hovell Track, Woolshed Falls at Beechworth, Mount Pilot in Chiltern, Eurobin Creek to Rollasons Falls and snow shoeing at Mt Stirling. When asked what her favourite local hiking place is, Bridget said, “It’s hard to pick a favourite because the more we do, the more I find to love, but the snow shoeing at Mt Stirling was an amazing experience.” The group has a number of upcoming hikes

planned including the Kiama Coastal Walk in NSW and the Cathedral Ranges near Buxton. “We’ve talked about doing the El Camino de Santiago in Spain one day, and I would love to hike some New Zealand trails,” Bridget said. For more information, you can find ST Elevation Hiking on Facebook. The group is closed, but a request to join can be made.

Laughing with Democritus

GONE FISHING

“We think there is color, we think there is sweet, we think there is bitter, but in reality there are atoms and a void. DEMOCRITUS, C. 460 – C. 370 BC

â—† LUCKY STRIKE: This magniďŹ cent brown trout took a Strike Tiger Nymph soft plastic in black and gold colour in a tributary of the King River last weekend.

Fishing action warms up THE ďŹ shing really seems to be starting to heat up right across the region now that the weather is warming. The trout ďŹ shing is still fantastic. Any streams that have trout in them seem to be ďŹ shing well at the moment. I have had a few reports of trout being caught in both the Kiewa and the Ovens rivers. I also received several reports of poor ďŹ shing in the Ovens River around Bright over the long weekend, however, that could be attributed to the extra ďŹ shing pressure brought on by the long weekend making the trout a little wary. Trout are very cunning ďŹ sh and can quickly become educated if they see a few artiďŹ cial lures in their water. Once the traffic dies down a bit the trout might switch back on up there. Merriwa Park Lake (behind the tennis courts) was stocked with rainbow trout in time for the school holidays. It just received a fresh batch of trout. There’s heaps of trout in there ready to be caught, so why not venture down in the remainder of the school holidays?

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA There’s been a few redďŹ n caught around the place. Lake Sambell has produced a few, as well as a small creek that I have promised not to tell. When people give me ďŹ shing reports, many people do not want to be named, and some do not want their ďŹ shing spot to be named publicly. I need to respect this. So if you know of any creeks that have redďŹ n in them, now might be a good time to throw a line in. I ďŹ shed the lower Ovens River near Peechelba on Saturday afternoon. I caught two very large carp and one very small Yellowbelly. I was very delighted to see a small Yellowbelly in the Ovens River.

DEMOCRITUS, the laughing philosopher, had ideas far in advance of his time. He is famous for his atomic theory featuring tiny particles always in motion interacting through collisions; his belief that the universe is governed entirely by natural laws rather than gods; his description of a universe containing an inďŹ nity of diverse inhabited worlds; his assertion that nothing is actually something; his deduction that the light of stars explains the Milky Way’s appearance; and his discovery that a cone’s volume is one-third that of the cylinder with the same base and height. Democritus wrote eloquently on subjects as diverse as the origin of human beings, artistic perspective, mathematics, anthropology, biology, medicine, cosmology, poetry, physics, and atomic theory. Biographical details about Democritus are incomplete, and in some cases ancient historians give contradictory accounts of certain aspects of his life, however the following details are most likely correct. Democritus was born into a noble family in about 460 BC in the ancient Greek city of Abdera. After his father died, Democritus used his inheritance to travel widely, educating himself both broadly and deeply. He followed in the footsteps of earlier Greek philosophers such as Thales and Pythagoras, living for some time in Egypt, whose mathematicians impressed him. He visited Babylon and he may have even travelled as far as India. He also traveled throughout ancient Greece before settling down again in his hometown. He authored a large number of books, all now lost, and was regarded as an outstanding writer. Democritus regarded the freedom of the individual as more important than the needs of the state, but in spite of

this, the fact that his name seems distinctly familiar to the word ‘democracy’ is purely coincidence. Atomic Theory None of Democritus’ many works have survived intact. Fragments exist, and some of his ideas were discussed by other ancient Greek philosophers, particularly Aristotle, who gave us some details of the atomic theory. Modern atomic theory began early in the 1800s with John Dalton. More than two millennia before this, Democritus’ atomic theory argued, from deduction and observation, some eerily accurate assertions about atoms. Democritus asserted that: t &WFSZUIJOH JT NBEF PG BUPNT t "UPNT BSF UIF TNBMMFTU QBSUJDMFT of matter – too small for us to see, although larger ones could exist. t "UPNT IBWF FYJTUFE GPSFWFS t "UPNT BSF JOEJWJTJCMF o UIFZ DBO never be cut into smaller particles. t "UPNT BSF TFQBSBUFE GSPN POF BO other by the void – a vacuum or empty space – which allows them freedom of movement. t "UPNT BSF DPNQMFUFMZ BOE QFSGFDUMZ solid because no void exists inside an atom. While scientists today could pick fault and aw with some of these ideas, most lay people would understand them to be a fairly robust and comprehensive description of atoms. In particular, Democritus notion that atoms are always in motion is both correct and exceptional. No better explanation of matter was produced until the nineteenth century.
