Passion for pollination By KYLIE WILSON A SELF described “neighbourhood naturalist, home gardener and native bee tragic” is urging people across the region to become “citizen scientists” during an upcoming project observing wild pollinating insects. Karen Retra has long been involved in sustainability and environmental education across the North East, but has become more and more passionate about the plight of pollinating insects over the past several years after receiving a beehive as a present from her partner Ralph. She said that once she saw bees in action in and around the hive, her interest in pollinating insects grew as she realised the diversity of species that were attracted to the garden, and she became driven to find out more. Eventually, she joined forces with Dr Manu Saunders from the University of New England (Armidale) to establish the Wild Pollinator Count pro-
ject, which has been going for the past five years. Karen said the project is simple to participate in, and just requires participants to watch any flowering plant in the area for 10 minutes at any time during the count week in April. During the observation, participants are encouraged to count and identify pollinating insects (including bees, wasps, flies, moths, beetles and ants) around the plant, taking photos if they wish, and submit the information to the Wild Pollinator Count website. “It’s all about just raising people’s awareness,” she said. “It’s a really great first step to extend our knowledge. “You’ve just got to slow down and have a look. “It is quite addictive.”

FEATURE STORY
Gastrointestinal stasis rabbits with Felix DeNatris VETERINARIAN are other common causes. Rabbits can become stressed from simple things like change in location, guests visiting the house or more severe things like loss of a companion which interferes with eating and can cause stasis. Especially for rabbits confined to hutches, lack of exercise is a major cause of GI stasis. Blockages of the gut with hair from grooming can also lead to stasis. If you think your pet rabbit has GI stasis contact your vet. There are several things you can do to prevent GI stasis from occurring in your rabbit. First and maybe most importantly is to feed your rabbit a hay based diet (high fibre), meaning that the majority of the ingested food is hay. This diet also helps to wear teeth and is good to prevent painful dental disease. Regular vet visits can help catch and treat diseases early such as dental disease or infections. Evaluate your rabbits living conditions and make sure there is adequate room to exercise. Keep stress to a minimum. Wildlife and other pets should be avoided, changes made slowly if possible.
VET CORNER THIS week’s pet of the week at Wangaratta RSPCA is Milo, a smoky black, three year old desexed male rabbit. To see more animals up for adoption at the Wangaratta RSPCA, visit the shelter in Connell Street or phone (03) 5722 2874.

Karen said people doing the count did not need to be experts or have fancy camera equipment, as the project was all about simple observation. She is passionate about getting people interested in being “citizen scientists”, and said previous counts had attracted a diverse array of people to become involved from members of Landcare groups, to school students, gardening groups, and even parents or grandparents bonding with their children and grandchildren away from screens. Karen said the advent of smart phones and social media, however, had made citizen science more accessible and democratic. “You’re crowdsourcing the identifi-

Karen urged people wanting to encourage more pollinating insects to visit their garden to: - Provide habitats by offering food (such as flowering plants, preferable natives but also exotics) and/or erecting a bee hotel; - Avoiding where possible pesticides that can harm pollinating insects; - Including flowering plants in your garden that bloom at all different times of year. The Wild Pollinator Count will take place between April 14-21, with a second count for this year taking place in spring from November 10-17. cation, and that’s really powerful,” she said. Karen said there was so much to be learned about the variety of pollinating insects living in Australia, particularly bees. “There’s 2000 species of native Australian bee, and we don’t know much about hardly any of them,” she said. “Not much is known about many of our Australian insects.” Karen said that with increasing calls to “save the bees” and preserve the world’s ecosystems into the future, collecting data and helping protect all species of bees and insect pollinators had become more important than ever. “Doing things that are good for honeybees generally benefit a whole lot of other critters,” she said.

GASTROINTESTINAL stasis (GI stasis) is a relatively common condition that rabbits can develop. As the name suggests in this condition a rabbit’s digestive system slows down or stops completely. This can make the rabbit very sick and can easily be fatal. When the digestive tract stops moving, bad bacteria is able to proliferate and produce gas which builds up in the intestines and caecum (an organs similar to the human appendix). This gas is incredibly painful and further deters the rabbit from eating and drinking, compounding the issue. How to know if your rabbit may have this condition: Rabbits will stop eating and subsequently have smaller than normal to no faeces as ingesta failes to move through. They will begin to hunch over as the belly becomes swollen and painful. They then become lethargic as they become sicker. There are a number of causes that can lead to GI stasis in rabbits. Low fibre and high starch diets have a lack of bulky material moving through the gut which fails to stimulate the gut to contract and move material through it. with Naturopaths Belinda McPherson and Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) ◆ GENTLE MOVEMENT: Yoga is an example of gentle exercise that can help with period cramp symptoms.
Six simple lifestyle tips to reduce period pain PERIOD pain is caused by the muscles in the uterus contracting. This group of muscles is extraordinarily strong and also flexible, but can be prone to cramping, congestion and spasm when out of balance. Diet, herbs and supplements can work wonders, but these lifestyle tips are something we talk about with all our women who present with hormonal issues. If the pain is debilitating or severe, by all means try these, but we defiantly recommend that you see a doctor or gynecologist to get a diagnosis and a naturopath, doctor and or gynaecologist (or ideally all three!) for a specific treatment plan. 1. Sanitary products: Organic cotton pads and tampons reduce the chemical toxicity and inflammatory load to the uterine area. For some women this can
make a big difference to the quality of the blood flow, reducing congestion, clotting and pain. 2. Castor oil packs: For those with painful, clotted periods, even endo, these can be revolutionary. For instructions on how to make a castor oil pack, check out www.nenaturalhealthcentre. com/recipes.html. 3. Relaxation techniques: Stress has a lot to answer for with period pain. You may notice when you are tense that the jaw and pelvis tighten up. This sends blood flow away from this muscle group and causes cramping and spasm. Simply taking time to breathe into the pelvis when you feel tightening has incredible benefits. There are also loads of fab PMS relaxation aps out there. 4. Hip/sacrum stretches and therapies: We discuss specific stretching
ideas for patients with period pain and work with remedial care providers when there are chronic issues. As a start point, any stretches and opens the hip and glut muscles done daily throughout the cycle will relieve the pain. 5. Exercise adaption: We need to compensate for sitting as this tightens the hip flexors and can create uterine tension. Trampolining is one of the best (as long as pelvic floor is stable) otherwise, walking, swimming and yoga are perfect. If you enjoy intensive running or circuits these are fab during the first 2-3 weeks of your cycle, but with PMS focus on more gentle exercises mentioned. 6. Pelvic self massage: create an oil blend with 1-2 drops of essential oils chamomile and clary sage and base oil (coconut) and massage into the pelvic area two a day from ovulation (midcycle) onwards.

Amulet Vineyard 2015 Nebbiolo FOR those who enjoy gardening, garden shows are a great source of inspiration, showing you just what can be achieved if you’re willing to make the time and effort. Even in the extravagant show gardens created by the world’s best landscape designers, there are ideas which can be taken home and applied to more modest backyards. But it always comes back to being realistic about your own budget, climate and capabilities, because what you see thriving in one part of the world won’t always do well in your own. Nebbiolo is a grape variety that is apparently very particular, happy to grow above the fog on the side of hills in the north of Italy, where there are just enough cool nights and sunshine-filled days. It also appears to be quite at home at Amulet Vineyard in Beechworth, where winemaker Ben Clifton says the 2015 ver-
with Anita McPherson sion benefited from the granitic soil and a warmer growing season. Here’s a wine with a brick red colour that has a lively, fruity aroma which makes me think of prunes and sweet cherry, with a hint of rose. The flavour is rich and fruity with more cherry and some raspberry, but then there is also a distinctive savoury dryness, reminiscent of earthy tobacco. This wine is a great one to think about, trying to get to grips with how this tricky fruit can produce something so interesting and yet delicious at the same time. Going that extra mile is sometimes well worth the effort. Enjoy over lunch at the cellar door in Beechworth or go to www.amuletvineyard.com.au.

This Day in History, 1952 ON April 3, 1952, Beechworth began a week of celebrations to mark a remarkable century of history. Victoria’s Lieutenant Governor, Sir Edmund Herring, launched the festivities by unveiling a plaque on the gateway erected for the occasion at the Town Hall Gardens. Beechworth streets and shops wore decorations, and visitors came from all over the North East and beyond to help the celebrations along.
Mini raspberry and chocolate pavlovas THIS recipe, courtesy of Megann Evans for Fresh Aussie Berries, makes for a sweet autumn dessert. More recipes like this can be found at www.freshberries.com.au. Method Preheat the oven to 120 degrees Celsius. Line a large baking tray with parchment paper. Using a stand mixer or electric beater, whisk the egg whites with a pinch of salt to soft peaks. Gradually add the sugar until the mixture is thick and glossy. Add the remaining sugar along with the lemon juice and vanilla. Continue to whisk until the sugar is fully dissolved. Sift the cocoa and cornflour together over the top of the meringue. Using a large metal spoon, gently fold ingredients so it looks like a swirl, giving a marble effect. Carefully spoon eight heaped portions of the meringue mixture
on the prepared tray, spacing them approximately 4cm apart - keep the meringue piled high, rather than spreading it flat. Sprinkle with a light dusting of cocoa and pistachio nuts. Bake for 75-85 minutes until the outside is crisp, while the centres are still a little soft and they will easily lift off the baking paper. Turn the oven off and leave the pavlovas to cool completely, with the oven door being left slightly ajar. When ready to serve, whisk the cream into stiff peaks with an electric mixer. Dollop the raspberry compote into the cream and swirl through. Assembly Cut the pavlovas in half and spoon on the cream. Top with the fresh rasperries and an extra sprinkling of pistachios. Top with the other half of the pavlova and another light dusting of cocoa, if desired.

We are here
Brave New World
with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ AN INTERSECTION OF DYSTOPIA: Are increasing mass surveillance, social media identitarianism, and artificially intelligent censorship measures steering us toward a future we were warned to avoid?
Alt-right, ctrl-left, press esc to continue THE year is 2084. Everyone wears grey overalls and has a shaved head. No one has any possessions - there is no art, literature or images of any kind. What documents are accessible to the public are strictly moderated and approved by a supreme government authority. That same authority possesses omnipresent surveillance technology capable of watching anyone for signs of transgression. And everyone walks brusquely from one appointed location to another in fear. They are frightened of others, of the authorities, but most of all, they are frightened of themselves - that they might, by some innocuous act or speech, cast suspicion upon themselves. There’s a popular meme spreading around on the internet - a venn diagram of the classic dystopian novels by Aldous Huxley, George Orwell and Ray Bradbury, and at their intersection sits our society as it stands right now. We have mass surveillance and data gathering ala ‘1984’
thanks to ISPs, social media and various government agencies who enact laws to gain access to it We have the collective group think, dehumanisation, and erasure of individualism of ‘Brave New World’ thanks to the rise of identitarianism in the form of ‘social justice’ (one of the more egregious and, all to often, insidious misnomers of the modern era) on the far Left side of politics, and ‘white nationalism’ (which, to say nothing else for it, is at least exactly as bad as it sounds) on the far Right. Then there is the ‘book burning’ of Fahrenheit 451 that comes in the form of the censorship of websites, books, and banning of digital distribution of documents in this technological age. And lastly, we have the live streaming of horrendous acts of violence against innocent people, in an openly stated bid to fuel the flames of division in the identitarian camps, to have governments pass laws that will further infringe on the privacy, liberties and inalienable rights of their citizenry in both digital
and physical spaces, and to see the censoring of works and information that could cast much needed, disinfecting light on the entire mess. And to make it all worse, it is we - the people, not the authorities - who are crying out and demanding that all these measures be taken. It is we who demand the government ban more and more words under the guise of ever more arbitrarily interpreted ‘hate speech’ laws. It is we who petition the large, conglomerate social media sites to have a person removed or deplatformed. It is we who demand books be removed from shelves, or films be cancelled, or sites taken down because we don’t like what they say, or worse, because they are linked in some ludicrously insignificant way to something someone else retweeted on Twitter a decade ago. Perhaps you don’t believe me. Let me dissuade you from that incredulity. You may recall the ‘It’s okay to be white’ debacle that oc-

cured in the Senate in October of last year. Senator Pauline Hanson attempted to pass a motion declaring that anti-white racism was on the rise and that ‘it was okay to be white’. The motion was rejected by a befuddled, and disgruntled Senate. They were very certain they should be angry about the whole thing, they just weren’t entirely sure why, so they stomped it out. To most pundits, and the public at large, this was seen as a victory against racism. Some may have been aware that, previously, controversial, anti-immigration activist Lauren Southern wore a shirt with the phrase emblazoned on the front ahead of her speaking tour in Australia. Very few understood that this phrase was cooked up on a message board on 4chan to solicit the exact reaction it got from the media and governments - to have an otherwise entirely innocuous phrase be declared a symbol of racism. And the same thing has been done to the ‘ok’ hand gesture,
the ‘Pepe the Frog’ meme, and even bottles of milk - all symbols of white supremacy now. I’m sure our much beleaguered dairy industry is just thrilled at that news. Put simply, the failure of the motion in the Senate was a victory, not a defeat, for these bad actors. Up is down, black is white, freedom is slavery, dear reader. And this information I am capable of giving you came courtesy of a freedom of access that our internet service providers saw fit to take away without, even, a demand from our government. The website 4chan is now blocked in Australia by major ISPs, along with a host of other sites that in some cases were, and in other cases were not, hosting footage of the Christchurch attack. Except, of course, the first site to stream the terrible event - Facebook. We couldn’t ban Facebook, now, could we? No, no, of course not. Every time we ban words or books, or give terrible mean-
ing to harmless objects we limit our freedoms further, and restrict the freedom of information that might stop us from continuing down this horrible path. Conversely, we surrender more power, not just to authorities, but the very people we’re trying to combat. Worse still, every time we unevenly, and hypocritically mete out vigilante vengeance in the name of ‘social justice’ - targeting one website, book or individual who is perceived to belong to the ‘wrong camp’ while forgiving or ignoring the transgression of someone who is on ‘our’ side, we alienate good people who are incensed by this version of socalled justice. The next time some poisonous meme enters our parliament, or a monster employs vile reverse psychology tactics so that we do exactly his bidding, it’s very likely that none of us will be any the wiser. None, of course, but the censor. And they always know what we should read and see, and how to keep us safe.

Wannabe schoolyard champs play Hardball CHANNEL CHAT
THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS:
SHOW: Hardball CHANNEL: ABC ME TIMESLOT: Now available on the ABC ME app, and on ABC ME daily from 4.30pm, Monday, April 22
Project Blue Book (Thursday, 8.30pm, SBS): Based on a series of books by UFO investigator J Allen Hynek, which apparently inspired The X Files. Chris & Julia’s Sunday Night Takeaway (Sunday, 7.30pm, WIN): Seems to have been trimmed each week to ensure it retains - or perhaps rotates - the segments which work best; still the best free-to-air family viewing on a Sunday night. After Life (Streaming on Netflix): Make it your business to catch this brilliant Ricky Gervais dark comedy about a widower dealing with the loss of his beloved wife.

ANYONE who’s stepped foot inside a schoolyard recently will know that handball (or downball) is a highly competitive activity. For everyone from primary schoolers through to senior secondary students, it’s a sporting outlet inclusive even of those who don’t consider themselves sporty. So it comes as no surprise that ABC ME (ABC’s channel
for tweens and young teens) is tapping into the level of passion for handball with its new series, ‘Hardball’. The show charts the story of primary schooler Mikey, and his relocation from New Zealand to Western Sydney, where his new mates Salwa and Jerry hatch a plot to make him a handball hero. To get there, he must overcome those who are already

With plenty of fast-paced, action-packed sports sequences, and great playground interplay between the champs and wannabes of the handball world, it is bound to grab the attention of youngsters. Promotional information
