By KYLIE WILSON FROM his youth in Mansfield to writing well received plays and novels in Melbourne, Gabriel Bergmoser has always been enthused about the creative process. This has come to the fore once again in one of his latest works, a play centred around The Beatles called We Can Work It Out, which will be performed this month at regional venues in the North East. Gabriel said he has long been fascinated by The Beatles, from their phenomenal success as a group to their various solo careers. “And then there are all the interpersonal conflicts and tensions between the four. “What was it like behind closed doors, especially during the more fraught times?” Gabriel said. “We Can Work It Out kind of stemmed from wanting to explore that.” He said he had read some books on the band and was also assisted in refining the script by actor and Beatles fanatic Brett Wolfenden, who plays Ringo in the show.

Snow season winds down AS the school holidays head towards their end, so too does the snow season. This weekend at Falls Creek sees the McKayos Snow. Dirt. Road. Enduro on October 6, with the course taking riders 23 kilometres through various terrains for a total descent of 1750 metres. The event will conclude with a presentation and official afterparty, and more information is available on www.mckayos. com.au. This weekend also sees the beginning of the annual 7 Peaks Ride, an at-your-own-pace cycling challenge which runs between October and April in which cyclists to test their endurance at several alpine resorts around the region. More information is available at www.ridehighcountry/7peaks/about. At Mt Hotham, children can continue to enjoy the fun of Lego at Big D as LEGOLAND Discovery Centre Melbourne is bringing LEGO fun from the city
to Hotham until October 7. Mt Buller is hosting 2018 ski season closing festivities on October 6. While there was still some snow for sightseeing and snow play at Mt Buffalo at the time of going to press, the mountain is looking back at a season that had 93 days of continuous snow cover. The Dingo Dell Café continues to be open daily from 10am5pm during the Victorian school holidays.

with Helen van Riet AUSTRALIAN PLANTS SOCIETY (VIC) ◆ TALKING POINT: A Phantom Wattle.
Lost and found – the Phantom Wattle IN a garden with many different species, it’s quite possible for a diminutive plant to be forgotten. Sometimes when weeding or pruning, I hear a ‘crack!’ underfoot. Oops! Yet again I have destroyed a rare treasure. Forgetfulness can also lead to unexpected joys. Like many avid gardeners, my friends and I share plants which we have propagated ourselves. Some years ago a plant enthusiast friend gave me a tiny seedling of Acacia phasmoides. I planted it, and then forgot about it. The name “Phantom Wattle” gives a clue to its habit, for when not in flower, it somehow ‘disappears’, merging into the foliage of surrounding plants.
SHOW
Its phyllodes (modified leaf stems) are so fine and hair-like, that the plant is virtually invisible. Surprise! It’s spring, and the Phantom is in flower once again. The Phantom Wattle reveals itself when it bursts into bright golden blooms of spiralling fluffy balls along the stems. This rare and lovely acacia was discovered quite by accident in 1967 by botanists who happened to be in the right place [at Burrowa-Pine Mountain National Park near Walwa] at just the right time. A. phasmoides is listed as Vulnerable under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act. Numbers of plants in Victoria have declined dramatically in the last 20
years to less than 100 plants. Possible causes of the decline are drought, climate change and browsing and grazing by feral mammals including goats, pigs, rabbits and deer. This wattle is worthy of a small space in the garden. It also makes an interesting and attractive talking point. A. phasmoides is a small to mediumsized shrub, and prefers a damp and sheltered situation with a cool root run. In our garden it reveals itself annually amongst a mixed planting of shrubs, only to ‘disappear’ until next September when it draws attention to itself with a burst of fluffy golden balls. It grows readily from scarified seed which can be collected in early December.

FEATURE STORY
Snake bites EVERYONE loves the warmth and lovely sunshine of summer, including our pets and snakes. Obviously, this is not a good combination and each year, a lot of pets end up being bitten by snakes. Common snakes we see in the North East are the brown, tiger, black and common copper head. The brown snake tends to be the more poisonous. Snakes are often very difficult to differentiate as each variety can come in various colours. Luckily there is no need to catch the snake, although each snake has a unique venom, your vet will generally stock a combination anti-venom. Signs that your pet has been bitten by a snake are variable. Common early signs include vomiting, increased salivation and collapse. But there a number of other clinical signs that can present such as trembling, diarrhoea, increased breathing rate, paralysis, and eventually death from paralysis of the muscles responsible for breathing. Signs can begin as early as 20 minutes after the bite but can be as late as 24 -48 hours, especially in cats. If you
with Felix DeNatris BvSC VETERINARIAN think your animal has been bitten by a snake you need to contact your vet clinic and get them seen by your vet ASAP, as the venom can work very quickly and is often fatal unless treated aggressively. Diagnosis at the clinic is made based on history, clinical signs, and running a blood clotting test. Blood clotting tests are quick, relatively inexpensive and helpful to conďŹ rm suspicion of snake bite. The blood from an animal that has been bitten by a snake will clot slower than normal or not at all. If it has been over two hours, then running a blood and urine test to check for muscle damage also helps conďŹ rm a diagnosis. These are most important where we are not sure why your animal is sick. Successful treatment requires hospitalisation, intravenous uids, anti-venom intravenously, and can vary from an overnight stay at the vet clinic to weeks, but generally most animals will be in hospital for 3-4 days.
VET CORNER THIS week’s pet of the week at Wangaratta RSPCA is Billy, a seven month old, desexed male heeler/border collie cross who is blue merle and white in colour. To see more animals up for adoption at the Wangaratta RSPCA, visit the shelter in Connell Street or phone (03) 5722 2874.
â—† MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR: Portraying The Beatles in Gabriel Bergmoser’s play We Can Work It Out are (from left) Brett Wolfenden (Ringo), Troy Larkin (George), Karl SarsďŹ eld (Paul) and Kashmir Sinnamon (John).
Fleshing out the Fab Four Ĺś
From page 1
But The Beatles are not the first famous figures that Gabriel has written about – he also wrote an acclaimed play about Bruce Springsteen, as well as one about lesser known bushranger Captain Moonlite, and has also referenced real life figures such as Oscar Wilde in his work. “Predominantly, it comes from a place of admiration or fascination; I want to gain a deeper understanding of a person or event that means a lot to me, so I approach it via theatre, Gabriel said of his works. “But beyond that, particularly with musicians like The Beatles or Bruce Springsteen, writing plays about them provides a way for me to explore the process and outlook of artists in general. “We Can Work It Out is about what art should and does mean, while Springsteen was more a look at how much an artist should be willing to sacrifice to achieve success. “I love writing about how people relate to and contend with
their pasts, whether our choices and mistakes define us or not. “Artists and their relationship with their work are also super interesting to me - go figure - and recently I’ve been writing a lot about how legends are formed and can shape cultures, particularly in regards to Australia. With the forthcoming performances of We Can Work It Out in the region, Gabriel said he was looking forward to showcasing his work to audiences so close to home. “It’s really cool! he said of his upcoming show dates. “Doing shows in the North East is always a bit of a homecoming. He said he has many fond memories of the North East and loves to return when he can. “Day trips through Kelly Country, going to school in Mansfield; it’s tough to boil it down to just a few key moments, he said of memories of his younger days. “I always love coming home, but the longer you’re away the more you notice how things incremen-
tally change and become a little less recognisable each time you come back. “Not in a bad way exactly, but in a way that makes you realise time is passing.â€? He is not resting on his laurels, however, with the third and ďŹ nal book in his young adult novel series centred around character Boone Shepard, also due out next month. “It’s a bigger, more action packed, more emotional book than the previous two and I’m so proud of how it wraps the story up,â€? he said. He also has another play in production, The Trial of Dorian Gray, which will be opening as part of the Midsumma Festival next January. We Can Work It Out is being performed regionally in Wangaratta at 8pm on Wednesday, October 10 at the Stage Door Studio; in MansďŹ eld at 8pm on Thursday, October 11 at the Delatite Hotel; and in Benalla at 1pm on October 13 at North East Artisans. SHOW US YOUR CATCH! CATCH OF THE WEEK ◆ Got a photo and details of a great catch? Email: kwilson@nemedia.com.au.
SUDOKU PUZZLE 6 3 7 1 ◆ FUN TO CATCH: Carp fishing has seen a surge in popularity over the last few weeks with many people enjoying the fighting abilities of these introduced scaled whales. Here is a ripper that Brett Corker of Wangaratta caught on the weekend.
I HAVE heard and read a lot about this current drought, but it was not until I drove north to Urana last week that I realised just how bad it is. Nothing but brown, short grass, failed crops and dust for as far as the eye can see – it’s very sad. While up that way I did manage to catch a few carp in the Colombo Creek which is a place that I love to fish, despite it being predominantly a carp fishery. Locally, there seems to be a bit of a boom in carp fishing with many people enjoying catching them. The Three Mile Creek in Wangaratta has been a popular carp fishing spot for many local kids. Over the last few weeks trout fishing
with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA reports are about as rare as green grass in Urana. I have had numerous reports, but nothing too glowing with most people catching one or two. I had one report of two trout being caught in the Buffalo River near Abbeyards – the largest was close to 50cm
long, but was the only fish landed and was taken on a Strike Tiger nymph in black and gold colour. Dane Shearer has been picking up a few trout in the Kiewa River using small minnows and bladed spinners, but once again not in great numbers. I have seen a few photos of yellowbelly caught at both Lake Hume and Lake Nillahcootie this week. Just like the trout they have not been caught in great numbers but the difference with the yellowbelly is that as the weather warms up the fishing should only get better. So in both lakes the yellowbelly have started biting, but are not fully ‘on the bite’ if that makes sense.

Nutrition for your brain HAVING trouble concentrating? Energy dipping? Maybe what you are eating and drinking could be affecting you on other levels than just your weight? Yep, absolutely! Your brain is made up mostly of water, fats, proteins, micronutrients and glucose. Most of these nutrients need to be consumed in the diet as the body can’t synthesise its own. Your brain is one of the hungriest organs in your body using up 20 per cent of your energy you consume as food. Not bad for an organ that only weighs two per cent of our body weight! Some brain nutrients include: Fats: especially omega 3& 6 are crucial for brain function and production of new cells. A deficiency in these fats has been linked to the formation of degenerative brain diseases. Omega rich foods: nuts, seeds, oily fish- salm-
Glucose: no, this doesn’t give you free rein to pig out on chocolate or lollies! Great brain sources include wholegrains (brown rice, quinoa, buckwheat), fruits and vegetables and proteins. The frontal lobe in particular is one of the most sensitive areas of the brain to drops in blood sugars (BS). Often a lack of concentration is one of the earliest signs of a drop in blood sugar. White foods/refined carbohydrates = a rapid rise of BS followed by a sudden drop and following behind your blood sugar is your concentration and moods. Whereas oats, legumes and wholegrains give you a steadier rise and fall allowing for optimal energy and brain function. So what happens when you are doing all this but your brain function still isn’t where you want it to be? on, tuna. Consumption of trans and saturated fats may compromise brain health. Proteins: Proteins are used to build cells and are precursors for neurotransmitters (NT) that control our moods, attentiveness, sleep, weight and concentration. Complete proteins (lean meats, eggs, Wholegrains, tofu, legumes, yoghurt, nuts and seeds) help make regulatory NT’s such as norepinephrine, dopamine and serotonin. Changing your proteins regularly helps your brain manufacture a variety of NTs to allow for a balance of moods and functions of the brain. Micronutrients: The brain loves antioxidants (AO). AO rich foods fights free radicles that damage all cells in the body and help keep our brain cells healthy and active. These include brightly coloured fruits and vegetables. Bs iron, copper, selenium and zinc are also great for cognitive development and function.

FOOD TALK
Michelini Wines Sauvignon Blanc AS individuals, we may have very different tastes and a long list of likes and dislikes, but the idea that anything crumbed is good would have to be declared a truism. Every culture has its version of a croquette and there’s a reason parmies are pub’s biggest sellers, and it’s got something to do with the way we all enjoy food that comes with a crispy, fried coating. It must be that multisensory factor at work BHBJO o UIF XBZ B DSJTQ layer outside provides an added dimension of taste, texture and even sound to contents like ďŹ sh, chicken, pork and potato. It even made the Dagwood Dog, arguably a crime against cuisine, into a fair favourite. While I wouldn’t go as far as to mess with meatballs or Mars Bars, I do believe that a Japanese style Katsu or Tonkatsu elevate simple chicken and
with Anita McPherson pork to a heavenly dimension. And its crispy richness is ideal with a glass of Michelini Wines Sauvignon Blanc. This pale, green tinged wine is crisp and lively with a lightly spicy and almost oral bouquet. It leans more towards herbaceous than overtly fruity, with the zing of citrus and some mineral acidity which works well with richer foods. It’s a variety which is well suited to spring and summer drinking when we feel more like nibbling and grazJOH o TIFEEJOH UIF layers and soaking up a little sun. This Day in History, 1934 ALL the latest design features of the 1930s were incorporated into the Plaza Theatre in Wangaratta, which was officially opened by Mayor Cr G Handley and Mr AM Zwar, MLC. The architects used the plaza design idea which had become so popular in that decade. This involved constructing a deep, sloping balcony, which gave patrons a better view of the screen.
Papaya Lime Bars THIS zesty treat from Papaya Australia makes an ideal addition to a lunchbox or morning tea plate. To ďŹ nd more recipes like this, see australianpapaya.com.au. METHOD 1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Lightly coat a 20cm x 20cm pan with cooking spray, then line the base and two sides with a single strip of baking paper. 2. In a medium bowl combine the dry ingredients for the crust (our through salt) and mix well. Add melted butter and stir to create a soft dough. Turn dough into the prepared pan and press evenly across the base. 3. Par-bake the crust for 12
mins until just golden. While it’s baking, make the ďŹ lling. 4. Add papaya and lime juice to a blender jug and puree until smooth. Add remaining ďŹ lling ingredients (eggs through salt) and pulse to combine. 5. Remove pan from the oven, pour ďŹ lling over the hot crust and return to the oven. Bake for an additional 18-20 mins, until bars are puffed and ďŹ rm to the touch in the centre. 6. Allow papaya bars to cool in the pan for at least 30 minutes before running a knife around the edge of the slice and using the paper to lift it out onto a rack. Cool completely, then cut into bars to serve.

Get your giggles from faux government documentary CHANNEL CHAT
THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS:
Show: Parks and Recreation Channel: ABC Comedy Time: Late, weeknights with FREYJA POSTLETHWAITE A MOCKUMENTARY style investigation into the inner workings of the government in a small town in Indiana’s Parks and Recreation department mightn’t sound terribly gripping. But I promise you, if there is any show that I had to watch for the rest of my life, it would be ‘Parks and Recreation’. This series stole my heart some four years ago and since then I’ve become incredibly fond of the characters who
work in the government department and other Pawnee residents. Comedienne Amy Poehler portrays deputy director Leslie Knope, who endeavours to make the most beautiful parks and create an awe-inspiring selection of recreational activities. A star-studded cast including Rashida Jones, Aubrey Plaza, Nick Offerman and Chris Pratt also features to offer a vast array of personalities and
◆ THE BEST: Parks and Recreation cast members (from left) Nick Offerman, Aubrey Plaza, Adam Scott, Amy Poehler, Jim O’Heir, Rashida Jones, Chris Pratt, Retta and Chris Lowe work together to create the funniest series of all time.
resultant shenanigans. Even the Pawnee townsfolk, who are often recurring minor characters throughout the series, deliver plenty of hilarity through their often ridiculous requests for the Parks and Recreation team. The mockumentary format
provides unique insight into the inner workings of each character, which is a sensational boon for comedy series that exposes the audience to a greater variety of jokes. I found Leslie Knope and April Ludgate (Aubrey Plaza) to be very relatable characters,
Archer (ABC Comedy, late, weeknights): Adult cartoons don’t usually pique my interest, but with an incredible combination of plot, character development and comedy, Archer is a must-watch. Tony Robinson’s Hidden Britain By Drone (SBS, 7.30pm, Thursday): Tony Robinson is an incredible presenter in this documentary series that explores little-known parts of the United Kingdom. How to Cook Like Heston (SBS Food Network, 7.30pm, Friday): Although it’s not very likely amateur chefs could master Heston Blumenthal’s remarkable style of food creation, it can be fun to dream. The celebrity chef shares tips and tricks in this program to help any home cook make their meals into masterpieces.
and I firmly believe everyone can identify a character in this show that reflects their own personality. This element of relation, combined with the near-realism of a fake documentary, almost
creates a feeling of familiarity for the viewer. The full series is also available on Stan, for those who can’t stand to stick to only one episode each night and would prefer to binge-watch.
