Hair today, gone tomorrow By BELINDA HARRISON
WHEN Lily Currie Fraser’s hair was at its longest, it reached mid-calf and the grade five Wangaratta Primary School student was always fighting with knots and snarls to keep it manageable. These days she has no such hassles, with it only just reaching past her shoulders and Lily admits (as does her mother, Sharon Currie) that it’s much easier for her to brush her own hair now that it’s short. Lily’s decision to cut off such a huge amount of her hair came about when her friend, Lily Wadley, lost her hair during treatment for cancer. The 10 year old decided she didn’t want other kids to suffer or feel awkward due to their hair loss and asked her Dad to look into where she could donate her hair. “I didn’t want other kids to go through the same thing as my friend Lily,” she said. “So Dad did an internet search and found the Hair for Heart section on the Variety Children’s Charity site and we read through all the guidelines.” Lily has only ever had her hair cut three times in her life so going to the hairdresser is a rare occurrence - with her last visit three years ago.

Feline Leukaemia Virus - FeLV FELV is a virus that is spread between cats mainly through contact with infected saliva or urine, and in rarer instances, infected blood. Once the cat becomes infected the virus can replicate in many tissues of the body including bone marrow and salivary glands. All ages, breeds and sexes of cats are susceptible and once in the blood the virus is shed constantly whether they are ill or not. The virus can survive in the moist environment of urine for up to 48 hours which makes good hygiene important in its control. It is most commonly a disease seen in catteries or houses with a number of cats. There can be a long period between when a cat becomes infected with the virus and when the virus starts making the cat ill, however, all infected cats at some
with Felix DeNatris, Wangaratta Veterinary Clinic point will show clinical signs. The virus most commonly causes lymphoma, a type of cancer, in various organs in the body such as the kidneys, or bone marrow. The signs we see in cats will depend on which organs are affected and can often manifest as a generalised illness particularly when the bone marrow is involved. There are blood tests available at your local veterinarian or via pathologists to identify if cats have the virus in their blood. Treatment and management options vary depending on the presentation of the FeLV positive cats. If you have any concerns contact your local veterinarian.

Autumn is here, offering us hope the fishing will pick up WELCOME to autumn, a beautiful time of the year to go ďŹ shing in North East Victoria. There is a lot of dirty water in the Ovens River at the moment but it is not all bad. A fair bit of sediment seems to be settling in the water as it moves downstream. At the moment the water in the lower Ovens River is still quite clear. The further down the river you get from Wangaratta the clearer it seems to be. The dirty water is very slow moving, but it also losing it’s intensity in the wider river. Finally I broke my Murray cod ďŹ shing drought last Sunday evening, landing two small Murray cod in the lower Ovens River. I caught them both on a bait called “Chickens Hitâ€? which

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA can be purchased at Adventure Camping and Fishing in Wangaratta. On the whole however, the Murray cod ďŹ shing is quite slow at the moment. There will be times when the cod really come on the bite over the next couple of months - this is typical autumn hot and cold Murray cod ďŹ shing. I ďŹ shed Lake William Hovell
last Thursday where I managed to catch around a dozen redďŹ n ďŹ shing from my kayak. They were all tiny, absolutely tiny. There were no ďŹ sh that were even close to ending up in my esky under the ice. I’ve also been doing a little bit of trout ďŹ shing over the last week. As the nights get longer and the day’s a bit cooler, the water is already starting to cool. I caught a few trout in a tributary of the King River on the weekend. All trout were caught on a small Wildbait minnow. The trick at the moment is to ďŹ nd a stream that still has a reasonable ow of water and has not been effected by the bushďŹ res.

Brown Brothers Wines Origins Series Tempranillo 2018 WHILE there are some dishes which can be perfected simply by following the recipe precisely, there are others that although simple, require a considerable amount of practise and expertise. For example you can make the same basic pasta or pizza dough every time, but the type of our, the temperature of the kitchen and even your hands, can all mean little adjustments need to be made. It’s then that experience is required - knowing when it looks too sticky, it hasn’t risen enough or the texture doesn’t feel right before you can determine what needs to be done to correct it. It’s why I leave baking bread to those who have already ďŹ gured it all out, and winemaking to the pros who have been doing it for generations and nail it every time. Brown Brothers’ Origins Series Tempranillo was developed in their “Kindergarten Wineryâ€? - a mini winery focused on trialling small batches of new varieties and different winemaking techniques. The fruit was grown at Brown Brothers’ Banksdale and Heathcote vineyards with a small percentage from the Goulburn Valley thrown in for good measure. The deep purple coloured

wine has a bright and spicy berry aroma which hints at raspberry and cherry, but deeper fruits come through in the earthy, savoury avour, like ripe plums. Its vibrant savouriness makes it so well suited for the table, pairing with grilled vegetables and meats like chorizo, tomato-based sauces and crusty sourdough bought from the local baker. It makes me keen to try the dry Rose in the same series, before the weather turns cold. Sometimes the smartest thing to do - is to let someone else do it. Available from local outlets

This Day in History, 1871 THE birth of a vigorous newspaper for Mansfield - the Guardian, established by John Goodall, was established on this day. The Guardian recorded district events, including the rise and fall of the Kelly Gang, was eventually merged with the Delatite Free Press and was merged again, in the mid 1880s, with a reincarnation of an earlier newspaper, the Mansfield Courier.

Natural medicine is personalised medicine NATUROPATHIC medicine is often described as ‘personalised medicine’. Naturopaths don’t follow Instagram health trends, fads and population based treatment strategies, we look at the individual’s needs, access and ability. When a patient walks into the consultation room with a condition, naturopaths are taught that instead of thinking “what do I do for eczema or IBS or anxiety? we look at the person sitting in front of them and ask “what is the cause of this person’s illness? and “what has happened throughout this person’s life that has set up this condition? Patients often report a highly positive perception (80-90 per cent) from their consultation with complimentary medicine practitioners. This is what personalised medicine looks like and what you should expect from a naturopathic appointment: t 1BUJFOU DFOUSFE DBSF providing advice that is respectful of your preferences, needs and values, and ensuring that
you are wanting to and are able to make the proposed changes. t 1SBDUJUJPOFS FNQBUIZ often referred to as bedside manner, empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. In a consultation this will feel like your practitioner has listened to you, let you tell your story and ultimately allowed you to open up and disclose your fears, worries, anxieties and hopes about your health condition, treatment options and quality of life while living with/working on that health issue. t 1SBDUJUJPOFS TVQQPSU it is one thing to offer up advice around diet, medication, exercise or relaxation treatments, but another to feel supported as you work towards meeting these goals or changes to your life. In a consultation do you feel like you can ask any question without feeling ‘stupid’? Trust that your practitioner will acknowledge their ability to help you or be able to ďŹ nd alternative options, should they be unable to answer
your questions? Will you be given helpful tools and strategies to work through any changes advised during a consultation? 1BUJFOU FNQPXFSNFOU empowerment is often described as being the process of becoming stronger and more conďŹ dent. In health care, this is about feeling like you have some control or involvement over your choices of treatment, that you are engaged in your care and that you are learning to make decisions around the best way to manage your health, eventually without the reliance on your practitioner. This is especially helpful when working on long term (chronic) health conditions that require regular follow up, changes to diet or lifestyle, and strategies/medicines that need to be taken over long periods of time. Health issues like IBS, fertility, weight loss, fatigue, anxiety and mood disorders respond especially well to this kind of health care model.

Hair today, gone tomorrow Ŷ

But this time she had an ulterior motive - and a good one at that. Sharee Asquith of Panda Hair Design was the hairdresser of choice for Lily’s ‘big chop’ and Sharee said she was more than happy to donate her time for such a worthy cause. “It’s fantastic to hear stories like this where kids want to donate something to someone less fortunate and I was only too happy to help,” Sharee said. “Lily and her father brought in the guidelines and we made sure all was in order for her to donate her hair.” Those guidelines included that the hair had to be clean and dry with no permanent or semi-permanent hair dye and that it needed to be at least 35.5cm or 14 inches long. The reason for the required length of 35.5cm or 14 inches comes from the fact that many of the people who receive the wigs are young women and children. Their peers often have long hair and to ensure they feel confident while wearing their wigs, a
similar hairstyle to their friends can make all the difference. The hair for donation can be secured in multiple pony tails or in a plait and Lily chose to secure hers with evenly-spaced elastic bands inside a plastic bag, ready for mailing with the donation form to Variety’s address in New South Wales. Hair with Heart was established in 2007 by Matthew and Rebecca Adamson after their daughter Charlotte was diagnosed with alopecia areata (spot baldness) under the name of the Princess Charlotte Alopecia Foundation. The foundation sought to raise awareness of the condition and funds to supply quality, human hair wigs to people with alopecia. In 2013, the foundation became part of Variety and in 2016 changed its name to Hair with Heart. Almost 30,000 hair donations have been received since 2013 and more than $1.5 million was raised by Hair with Heart in 2019. Hair with Heart works with Freedom Wigs, a wigmaker based in NZ, who make custom, human hair, vacuum cap wigs for adults and kids who have lost

their hair due to a long-term medical condition. It takes between 10 and 20 ponytails to make just one wig and due to the volume and logistics of the wig-making process (and privacy of the wig recipients) no donor is able to find out exactly where their hair has ended up, but you can be guaranteed that the custom wig you’ve provided hair for will go to someone who is truly grateful for it. For her donation, Lily received a Certificate of Appreciation from Hair with Heart and encourages anyone who is interested in donating their hair or to make a monetary donation to go online to www.variety.org.au to get more information. For those whose hair is not long enough to donate to Hair with Heart, Sustainable Salons accept ponytails from 20cm in length. “I think I would do it again but it may take me another three years for my hair to grow long enough again. I would also like to say thank you to Sharee for donating her time to cut my hair,” Lily said. ◆ ALL GONE: Lily on her return from the hairdresser after an absence of three years.
