WHEN Justin Crawley began living and teaching at a secondary school in a remote Aboriginal community in the Northern Territory in 2008 he hoped to make a difference. Six years on, the results speaks for themselves, literally. Youth from Wadeye – 400km south of Darwin and the largest remote community in Australia – are happily calling Bright their temporary home, as part of a novel partnership that is helping change lives. Justin said the connection between the North East and Wadeye developed from a conversation with Indigenous Murrinhpatha community leaders, looking to establish a leadership program with young men. “It was to be located away from the community to give them the time and space to learn leadership skills and other useful life skills,” he said. “The program was aimed at participants strengthening their own culture and returning to their communities to be a positive influence for others in the future.” Justin, who grew up in Beechworth and now lives in Harrietville overseeing the program, thought the Harrietville and Bright areas offered good opportunities to forge strong links with the community. AS the last of the autumn leaves fall to the ground and the season changes from autumn to winter my garden still has plenty of color. Not all are highly visible but towering above them all is the beautiful tree dahlia, with its delicate lavender dahlia-like flowers nodding from the highest tips. Unfortunately, with the recent heavy rain and strong winds the blooms are now covering the ground. Another notable feature is a pink sasanqua camellia hedge along one fence line. The Jennifer Susan sasanqua camellia has masses of fragrant informal double pink blooms and a carpet of spent flower petals on the ground. In a corner the jade plant is covered in tiny pink and white flowers and various other succulents have sent up orange flowers to brighten the garden. The roses are putting on their final show before slowing down and going into winter dormancy. Colorful blooms and buds in white, yellow, apricot, pink and red are dotted throughout the garden. The bird of paradise is exhibiting its bird like flowers with orange petals and blue tongue. The low hedge of pink geraniums is thriving and constantly producing new blooms; it never stops flowering. What’s in your garden: Different species of palms, cycads, succulents, salvias, perennials, roses, natives, fruit trees and much more. What do you enjoy about gardening: You can be really creative and surround yourself with your own ever-changing portrait of nature. Nothing gives me more satisfaction than walking outside every morning and seeing this vision of beauty, the results of my hard labor, like a big reward.

Gardening puts you in a zone, relieves you of any stress and elevates your mood. Favorite plant/spot in your garden: When I think I have a favorite spot, another area soon grabs my attention. I have a big garden, and it’s definitely hard to choose, although my courtyard is really starting to show glimpses of its full potential, which is overflowing with palms – definitely one of my favorite plants.

Water saving/conservation tip: I get lots of free mulch from the tip, I also use lucerne. I have lots of areas in my garden that are low water zones, and I make the most of natives and succulents. Your tips to keep gardens in top shape: The one thing that I would recommend – and is the secret to my success in the garden – is gardening by the moon. Follow this, and you can’t go wrong.

native rosemary, is covered in tiny mauve white flowers which contrast with its blue grey foliage. The purple salvias are into their third flowering season. Although classed as an annual, with regular pruning after flowering, they keep performing. They look great mixed among the self-seeding orange and yellow calendulas which offer a bold and bright contrast. Another prolific self-seeder is the annual chrysanthemum daisy, botanically known as chrysanthemum paludosum, with white flowers and yellow centres. These are just starting to flower and will continue through to spring. White alyssum with its tiny honey scented flowers have not stopped blooming and continue to grow and spread. The pansies planted beneath trees are brightening the garden with their smiling faces and deep purple violets are poking their heads through the heart shaped leaves along the pathway. The fuchsia has bright red and purple flowers, the potato vine is always covered in white flowers and the first of the jonquils have just opened. Happy gardening.

My pet drinks a lot MOST healthy animals are fairly consistent in the amount of water they drink throughout the day. There can be some variation to the normal on hot days, when there has been more exercise or even with increased dry food in their diet. Drinking excessively is often the first sign of underlying disease that many owners will notice. Polydypsia (or drinking too much) is usually accompanied by an increase in urination and is a clinical sign of many different conditions. If you think your pet is drinking a lot, the first question you should ask is how much does it drink? This can be calculated by measuring how much water you give your pet at the start of the 24 hour period and how much is left at the end. The difference tells us how much they drunk that day. Drinking too much is classified as abnormal when the animal drinks more than 100ml per kg in the 24 hours, eg a 10kg dog drinking more

possum skin ball that was played in Bright and included both Indigenous and nonIndigenous players, where the children even learned cheers in two Indigenous languages. “It was just a fantastic experience across the cultures,” Justin said. “It really did break down a lot of barriers.” He said the program is owned by the Wadeye community. “We actually represent the people – we are actually following their wishes,” Justin said. “We can provide access and opportunity on both ends.” He said program had seen participants go on and set up businesses in honey and rammed earth construction. One of the greatest success stories was a young man called Adrian. He progressed from being a heavy marijuana smoker who did not attend school to a clean, sober and involved member of his community. “Now he’s a young dad who’s a fantastic dad,” Justin said. “His life changed dramatically. “Now he has a quality of life, and he’s a great role model for his kids. “That sort of outcome, you can’t put a price on that. “Education is the key.”

Today there are eight Indigenous teenagers currently taking part in the program (six boys and two girls), which, as well as their school studies, includes a building program (Certificate II in Engineering), and life skills education (including opening bank accounts, learning about nutrition etc). Justin’s partner Rebecca, who teaches at Bright P12 College, has also enthusiastically embraced the work, and the college now has Indigenous studies at year 9 and reclamation of Indigenous language in years 11 and 12, as well as year 9 trips to Wadeye each year. Justin said building a life in the North East was confronting for some participants, as they are coming to a world they’ve never known before. “People don’t realise just how amazing it is that they are able to cope.” Justin said the community of Bright have been incredibly welcoming and have embraced the program. “This little country town has got quite a good understanding of Indigenous culture,” he said. “Bright P12 College in particular has been fantastic.” A particularly momentous moment was a game of Marngrook football with a

Lake fishing over the winter GOT A PHOTO FOR CATCH OF THE WEEK?

We have reached that time of year when many people have packed up their fishing rods and replaced them with winter activities such as deer hunting, football, snow skiing etc... The fishing is much quieter during winter and as a result I am taking the entire winter off. That’s right folks, this is my last fishing report until the Wednesday before trout opening weekend in September. There are a few very viable fishing options throughout winter though, in fact a couple of places fish their best during the coldest months. Here is a bit of a forecast I have put together of what I expect during winter for those anglers (like me) that just crave wetting a line, even on the dullest days. LAKE DARTMOUTH: It fishes very well all winter. During June and July a lot of brown trout will be moving back into the lake having finished their spawning run, and the rainbow trout will be heading up into the rivers to begin theirs. Try trolling around the river mouths with winged lures like Tassie Devils. There is no need for downriggers or anything to assist getting the lure down deep during winter as the water is very cold and the trout are happy to feed close to the surface. Focus on the low light periods of the day. LAKE WILLIAM HOVELL: It is very similar to the above mentioned Lake

Dartmouth with the addition of redfin which can be caught down deep in 30 plus feet of water during winter. Don’t expect too much from the redfin, but you might pick a few up if you persevere. LAKE EILDON: It is an amazing mixed fishery. During winter the trout bite best. Try trolling winged lures or small diving minnows anywhere in the lake. The redfin seem to bite better some winters than others. If you are targeting them, try fishing in deep water with a small soft plastic or tiny live yabbie. You may even pick up an odd yellowbelly or Murray cod if you are lucky. LAKE MULWALA: It ticks over all winter for anybody desperate to get a cod fix. They do slow down, but there

are still a few on the chew. The bigger cod tend to show up more during winter. Try trolling the largest hard body lure you can find in 30 feet of water in the submerged Murray River course. ARE you a dog person or a cat person? Or maybe you’re a dog and cat person? Or maybe you love some other kind of animal? Or maybe you simply love all animals (or can’t stand the lot)? Some people are very fierce in their loyalties. I’ve often heard catties or doggies trumpet the superiority of their chosen breed of animal. Me? Well, I’m definitely a fence sitter when it comes to the dog v cat issue. I’ve known and loved many animals from both camps. And I’ve known and disliked quite a few of them too. At the moment I’m a ‘dog person’ (as you’ve no doubt guessed if you’ve been reading this column for any time). But that’s more through necessity than choice, as with two territorial, cat-despising mutts reigning supreme in my house, I sincerely doubt any poor moggy who tried to enter this household would last long. We’ve never even seen a cat in our yard since the Schnauzer boyz took up residence. I’m sure word must have spread quickly in cat world to steer clear. And if the rapid and merciless disposal of a baby possum, several rats, some mynah birds and a poor little King Parrot are anything to go by, the cats are wise to keep their distance. But I was given cause to think about the whole cat/dog thing the other day when the spouse made an unexpected proclamation. He announced that, in the (hopefully way off ) event of our boys’ demise, he intends to never get another dog. I was not so surprised by this as he’s whinged fairly regularly about the inconvenience of having dogs – especially ones who require a fair amount of grooming, cost us a small fortune in boarding kennels and vet bills and who have a penchant for sleeping on his side of the bed when they get the chance. Those inconveniences aside, I’ve never seen him so enamored by a pet. This is the same man who (perhaps due to his farm-based upbringing) has always

BY CATHERINE WARNOCK maintained a fairly aloof relationship with our pets. Oh yes, he was always kind towards them but pets were generally kept outside - apart from a few cats who were initially smuggled in by the kids and just stayed. Certainly our dogs always slept in kennels. Now Mr Practical Farm Boy is often seen petting and snuggling with his canine buddies. He walks them, feeds them (even cooks special food for them), grooms them and carries them gently to their beds of an evening and gives them a loving pat before retiring himself. I sometimes can’t believe it’s the same person. It’s very cute to watch, actually, but when I talk to other middle aged couples I discover his is not an isolated case of puppy lovey-itis. It seems quite a few other blokes – formerly hunters, fishermen and vehement crusaders for the “pets belong outside!” brigade – are now big softies when it comes to their beloved pooches. “So why his big decision to never have a dog again?” you ask. Well, at first I assumed it was because the dogs do cause us some inconvenience, financial pain and somewhat restrict our social lives. The latter not because we don’t enjoy getting out and about or begrudge spending a few bucks on boarding kennels, but more because we miss the little blighters and we don’t like upsetting them. So I could have understood it if he said he was just a bit sick of all the attention, time and money they require. But no. His main reason for wanting a cat as his next pet is that he feels he is a bit too ‘emotionally invested’ in Scruffy and Moses. Apparently he thinks cats are a bit less needy. I didn’t bother enlightening him that this is not about the breed of animal; it’s about what’s changed in him. I guess he’ll figure that out when his future moggy becomes a thoroughly spoiled, couchscratching, lap-loafing, salmon-eating brat. In the meantime, lap it up Schnauzer boyz. Lap it up.

WITH BRONWYN INGLETON ANOTHER one of the dishes that was a must make at the Consular General’s residence was this pecan pie. It comes from the south, and is quite delicious. Use the shortcrust pastry recipe below if you want to make your own, or buy a pastry case from the supermarket. Method Combine eggs, corn syrup, brown sugar, melted butter bourbon and salt in a bowl and mix well. Arrange one cup of pecans evenly over the bottom of pie crust, pour filling carefully over the pecans, and then arrange the remaining ½ cup of pecans decoratively over the top. Bake in pre heated oven at 180 degrees for 15 minutes, turn oven down to 160 deg. and bake until set 20 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean. Method (Shorcut Pastry) In an electric food processor blend flour, butter and salt into fine bread crumbs mix, add cold buttermilk just until the mix comes together into a ball.

The successful applicant will be committed to completing the four years of training, during which they will be taught all facets of newspaper printing.

Qualifications or past experience in Disability Services would be advantageous, however not mandatory. All required training will be provided.

Applicants must be self motivated, reliable and be able to work in a close team environment. This is a full-time position of 38 hours per week, but some exibility will be required.

ARE you living a healthy lifestyle with a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables and whole-grains? Or are you simply making up for a nutritionally devoid diet by popping pills? JUST like a big clap of thunder and a lot of hot air, the Federal Government is not finding too many supporters for its budget. Last week saw the first of the changes pass through the House of Representatives, with the Deficit Levy which commences on July 1 this year not being opposed by the Opposition. Only time will tell what other changes the government is able to obtain Opposition support, as the minor parties and the independents do not have the numbers to stop legislation, although it is a different story in the Senate where if the Opposition votes against legislation, with the support of the minor parties, some legislation will pass. But it seems to me that many of the budget proposals will remain in limbo. I have been reading with interest the saga in our education systems. Both universities and TAFE seem to be in all sorts of trouble making ends meet, with the Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE reporting a $30 million loss. Surely all the blame cannot be levelled at the State Government’s funding cuts with enrolments falling by more than 5000 in 2013 from the year before. Funding was slashed by 41 per cent, or $28.6 million, “and this could not be recovered through offsets in other areas”, said the TAFE interim chief executive Ron Gauci. With a deregulated system to come into play in 2016, it will be interesting to see how much university fees will rise. Education Minister Christopher Pyne has challenged the universities not to increase fees for current school leavers, saying it will be their call whether they are to be included in the new arrangements. Concern has been raised in some quarters that with a deregulated system we will see upwards of 160,000 school leavers and mature age students who could enrol at universities

Under the government’s plan, these future undergraduates would only be exempt from the new fees for their first year of study. After 2016, they would pay the new fees for the rest of their course. Mr Pyne indicated he is willing to negotiate on his higher education reforms, including the HECS-HELP student interest rates and the salary threshold when debt repayments start to kick in. Deakin University became the first university to say it will wear the costs of grandfathering all its 2014 students from fee hikes from 2016, slamming the timing of the government’s fee deregulation as otherwise unfair to students. But in some good news, direct government assistance will be forthcoming for the first time to students attending TAFE, private universities and in diploma programs from 2018. This was a key recommendation of the recent Kemp-Norton review into university funding. An extra 80,000 students – mostly in diploma and associate degree courses – will receive government support for higher education from 2018. Closer to home for me is the news of Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson’s illness. Having been involved personally with a person suffering from the other strain of GBS for a long period of time, I sincerely hope for Alastair and his family that he does not become debilitated during his treatment. I am sure he is in good hands and his recovery will be complete sooner rather than later, so that he is able to return to the job he loves.
