FAMILIAR FACE: Allan Marsland plays a large role in the Falls Creek and Mt Beauty communities. PHOTO: Nathan Fenton

By KYLIE WILSON THERE would be few people around Mt Beauty and Falls Creek who do not know long term local resident Allan Marsland. Mr Marsland has spent decades as part of the local skiing community, having first moved to the area in the 1970s to teach at the Bogong School Camp. “I was attracted here by the opportunities, the lifestyle and the job,” Mr Marsland said. He later moved to the Tawonga/Mt Beauty area. By the late 1970s, he had become part of the Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club, then in its early days, and he has not looked back. A keen cross country and downhill skier, he became more closely involved in the pastime and with the club as the years went on. These days, he can be found at Falls Creek several days a week in the winter. For him, nothing beats being out on the mountain. “I love enjoying the beautiful environment, getting out there in the beautiful scenery,” he said. His favourite run sees him head out “over the dam wall” before heading along Bogong High Plains Road and into the Alpine National Park, where he can explore where his mood takes him.

Cashless society moving ever closer CASH payments are fast becoming a thing of the past. New research shows that the ease and security of waving a card, phone or even your wrist instead of carrying around cash is more popular than ever. Detailed research by Colmar Brunton, commissioned for the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), reveals that only one in five Australians still prefer using cash for purchases. ATO Assistant Commissioner Matthew Bambrick said “It’s clear that there’s been a cultural shift towards cashless payments across the board, even for smaller amounts. “The research shows that cash is only the preferred payment method for transactions under $5, and for anything over $50, the vast majority of people want the ease and security of an electronic payment. “Where we once saw people walk into car dealerships with cash in hand, cash has now been relegated to the morning coffee”, Mr Bambrick said. The trend towards cashless payments is particularly evident among people under 35, who carry the least amount of cash. Those aged 18-24 are also half as likely to request a discount for paying in cash compared to the general population. Mr Bambrick said “the move by the younger generation away from seeking an ‘under the table’ discount is really encouraging. It indicates that a once common prac-

tice is now rare as people enjoy the benefits of being cash free.” The research shows consumers are drawn by the convenience of cashless payments, which remove the unnecessary step of withdrawing cash and carrying it around when making any transaction. Tap and Go payments have also been game changing, bringing about faster transaction times. Additionally, cashless payments boast security benefits, by removing the risks of carrying cash and protecting consumer rights through easier record keeping. Mr Bambrick said “The business community knows what people want, and 86 per cent of businesses agree that most customers expect to be able to pay via electronic means. “This research indicates that the trend away from cash will only gather pace. This is more than a passing fad. This is the way of the future. “Particularly with the decline in minimum transaction amounts, we are likely to see more and more people carrying little or no cash at all. Most businesses already know this and we expect the rest will be there soon.”

Get stuck into bare root planting

WELL, bare root season has well and truly arrived. Now is the time to come down to the nursery and see the extensive range of fruit and ornamental trees and roses that we have to offer. Some people may be intimidated by bare root trees and roses but it’s actually very simple to plant them. When you buy them at the nursery they need to be planted fairly soon. The most important thing is making sure that you keep the roots moist. When you purchase bare root fruit trees it is important to prune them by up to a half as this allows the plant to

This is the level it needs to planted to. Often bare root trees need staking when they are planted to help support them until they get a good hold when their roots grow. You may need to keep the stake in place for some time until the tree can support itself, especially in a windy location. There is so much to choose from with fruit and ornamental trees and roses at this time of the year, so take advantage and think about where you might be able to plant something new. Happy gardening.

put its energy into growing a strong root system. If there are any damaged roots it is a good idea to trim these off also. Staff at the nursery will be happy to help you with the pruning when you buy the tree if you are unsure. When you dig the hole for bare root trees it is ok to add compost or planting mix, but definitely no fertiliser at this stage. Wait until the plant is in full leaf in spring to fertilise. The tree will have a natural ‘tide’ mark where it was in the ground.

FEATURE STORY

Blood analysis with Meagan Lee, VETERINARIAN Here we look at the levels of Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine, both of which are normal by-products of metabolism that are cleared by the kidneys. Elevations in these indicate compromised kidney filtration, which can have several causes. Blood Proteins The values of the main blood protein, albumin as well as the total protein levels in the blood are useful in indicating dehydration, blood loss, liver disease and kidney disease as well as other conditions. Glucose Blood sugar levels are key in diagnosing diabetes, as well as assessing energy levels in debilitated or sick animals. Both increases and decreases in blood sugar can be very dangerous to animals. Electrolytes The electrolytes sodium, potassium and chloride are essential in maintaining proper fluid balance. They are especially useful in investigating patients with heart disease, diarrhea, vomiting and metabolic diseases and can have important implications on treatment options.

VET CORNER THIS week’s pet of the week at Wangaratta RSPCA is Rory, a two year old, desexed male domestic shorthair cat who is tabby and white in colour. To see more animals up for adoption at the Wangaratta RSPCA, visit the shelter in Connell Street or phone (03) 5722 2874.

Man of the mountains

“It’s a lovely, and more or less level, track,” he said of the run. Over the years he has been heavily involved in a range of winter events, including one of the biggest in the area, the Kangaroo Hoppet. “The Hoppet’s been a fantastic opportunity for me,” Allan said. “It makes you feel proud of your town, and it’s really great for Australians to be involved in, it gives locals a fantastic opportunity to be part of an international ski race,” he added. Allan said he has made many friends from all over the world due to his involvement with the event, and has even traveled overseas to help share his knowledge with the international cross country skiing community. This has included him being involved in Worldloppet (the organisers of an international series of ski marathons) and the International Ski Federation cross

country ski committee. “It’s opened up a whole new world where I get to contribute something and give back to the sport,” Allan said. He said the Hoppet also boosted the local economy and opened up a whole new world for local youth. “It opens up the eyes of the young people in the area to other opportunities,” Allan said. And although he was recognised for his work over the years with a Medal of the Order of Australia last year, Allan said that any work he has done for the community is truly credit to not just him, but the people working with him. “You’re aware of what you’ve done, but you’re also aware of the people behind you doing the work,” he said. Allan said he would not trade living in the alpine region for anything, and said he was proud to be part of the

local ski community, which over the years has also produced many Olympic standard cross country skiers. He said he is keen to help face the challenges of the future, including the continuing development of cross country ski facilities at Falls Creek. Allan said he is looking forward once again to this year’s upcoming hoppet, adding that the contingent of international competitors is as strong as ever this year, with 100 or more overseas skiers expected to compete. Among the prominent skiers involved this year will be last year’s Worldloppet Cup winner, Aurelie Dabudyk, who will be training in the area in the lead up to the hoppet, as well as competing. This year’s Kangaroo Hoppet is happening on August 25 and more information is available on www.hoppet. com.au.

BLOOD analysis is an excellent tool available to veterinarians. A complete blood profile provides vital information concerning your pet’s organs. Even in the absence of symptoms, some pets may be experiencing changes in their body’s function that are not yet severe enough to present observable symptoms. Blood analysis allows vets to access such things as your pet’s liver and kidney function, pancreas, intestinal tract, thyroid, and parathyroid. Additionally it allows vets to evaluate the different types of blood cells, which are essential to the health of your pet. What do the different tests tell us? Complete blood count This test lets us assess the white blood cells (important in immunity, infections etc), red blood cells (oxygen carrying capacity) and platelets (blood clotting cells) and can be important in identifying bone marrow disease. Liver tests The liver enzymes ALT and ALP as well as the total bilirubin level in the blood can be important indicators of liver disease, gall bladder disease as well as adrenal disease and even red blood cell problems. with Naturopaths Belinda McPherson and Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) ◆ HEALTHY BALANCE: Keep a close eye on your iron levels during pregnancy.

Iron women – the need to manage iron levels in pregnancy

NATUROPATHS consider iron to be the super nutrient of pregnancy. This is largely because of its ability to dramatically improve the wellbeing of the mother and reduce serious issues in the pregnancy (low birth weight and premature birth). Anaemia of pregnancy also plays a role in post-natal depression and babies born to mums with anaemia of pregnancy can have increased infection rates and poor brain development of the new baby. We also know that iron deficient mums have a harder time breastfeeding and are way more tired than iron replete mums. For the most part iron deficiency

is easily treated, but as you need 2x as much iron in pregnancy, we are finding many women are not meeting demands through diet, and we are finding low iron levels are being picked up too late in the pregnancy for basic iron supplements to make much change. Given that many of these supplements are constipating at larger doses, many mums are opting out of treatment, before the problem is really fixed. During pregnancy we never wait for iron to get so low that anaemia is diagnosed. As soon as we see iron stores dropping we act with food therapy,

herbs that build blood and work in a variety of ways to help both absorb and release more iron. These herbs often have a secondary action to settle the stomach, reduce reflux and reduce constipation. If you feel very tired, light headed or drained in your pregnancy ask to have your iron levels and iron stores retested. If your practitioner mentions that your iron is low during pregnancy but is not ready to start treatment, you can definitely start on iron rich foods, herbs and non constipating supplements, hopefully to avoid the serious consequences of low iron, rather than waiting for an iron infusion.

This Day in History, 1857 SIMMERING resentment against the tide of Chinese immigrants in the 1850s erupted on July 4, 1857, with a day of violence referred to as the Buckland Riot. The outbreak took place on the Buckland River, when a small but militant band of Europeans decided that the Chinese should be evicted, and set upon them with great violence. A police contingent under Robert O’Hara Burke restored order; a number of miners were brought up on charges and Chinese miners were compensated.

TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ LEVEL UP: Traversing rapid changes in technology can be a huge challenge for businesses, and keeping employees engaged in these changes can be equally so. One strategy many workplaces are implementing is the concept of ‘gamification’ - driving changes and engagement through interactive apps.

Got game? Gamification of the workplace

IN this brave new world of rapid technology growth, it’s hard for businesses - especially smaller businesses - to keep up with the ever evolving landscape. One great new revolution is quickly superseded by another, and for a business looking to implement a new technology based strategy, it can be bit like the old arcade game Frogger, where you wait safely on the bank, second-guessing yourself as you try to pick that perfect log, at the perfect time, lest you get swept under the water. There are so many apps, so many platforms, so many cloud-based services that ‘revolutionise’ your productivity, but when it comes to actu-

ally tailoring and implementing any of these products into your specific business, well, that’s largely left up to you to work out. This, along with lack of employee engagement, are two of the major reasons why 70 percent of business transformation efforts fail, according to Gartner research. A business needs it’s employees to be ‘on board’ a big change, helping to steer and drive it, and the business needs to foster that enthusiasm. One relatively new strategy to engender such enthusiasm is the concept of ‘gamification’. Gamification can come in a variety of forms, but the basic

premise is digital motivation through a series of videogame like mechanics - rankings, scores, levels, personal bests, badges. The goal of gamification is not to turn a workplace into a LAN party, replete with PCs loaded with first person shooters, cans of Red Bull, and pizza boxes, but it does utilize strategies well known and perfected by video game developers over the last several decades. Gamification taps into psychology that drives human engagement - the drive to compete, improve, and out-do - and to get instantly rewarded while doing so. But just as any video game developer will can tell you, the

success of video games or gamifying a workplace, comes down to research and execution. If done well, gamification can have major benefits - fostering a fun and engaging workplace culture with clearly defined goals and targets. If done poorly, gamification can make a business seem cold, calculative, and overly surveillant. Gamification tends to work best with business that have outputs which are easily measured, such as sales, or units produced per hour, and works less well where performance or success are more arbitrarily measured, such as jobs involving writing, creativity, or counsel.

Two great uses for gamification are training and mobility. Rather than simply send out an email detailing new workplace policies or practices, gamifying this process, perhaps via an interactive quiz, can help an employee learn this new information more thoroughly. Moreover, because we increasingly find ourselves in mobile workplaces, rather than stationary work desks, gamification can aid in keeping all employees in the same, ‘digital office space’, with the ability to communicate and collaborate with one another, rather than be entirely separated from the workplace when out of the office.

On the other hand, two major potential drawbacks can be workplace stress and the dehumanization factor. Apps tailored to constantly measure employee performance can rapidly cause workplace fatigue and possible resentment, while having computers essentially supervise employees can make workplaces feel clinical and less empathetic. The question then, is finding the right balance of gamification to keep your employees engaged, but not stressed or overwhelmed. Actually, this is a question for almost all digital transformation today—how much tech to infuse, and how much work to keep human.

THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS:

with Shane Douthie AFTER what feels like an eternity of gradually decaying reality shows that are now past their used by date there is some light at the end of the tunnel. SBS’ world cup soccer coverage has been superb and we can be thankful that Optus failed in its attempt to dominate the broadcast of this wonderful event and the public broadcaster can con-

tinue doing its job beyond the knockout phase. We also have Wimbledon starting this week on Seven and although it’s a tad late it still provides wonderful viewing (better than the limited overs cricket in England over recent weeks). Best of all there are some new shows coming up that promise to shine in the bleak free to air tv climate

World Cup or Wimbledon (SBS and Seven, late every night) Two of the greatest sporting events visually in the universe. ◆ QUIRKY: Lance and Andy (pictured) and fellow members of the Danebury Metal Detecting Club will change your Friday night viewing.

we have found ourselves in over recent years. Last Friday a new ‘quirky’ (what else) British comedy series The Detectorists started on ABC Comedy (2), which could well become a staple for viewers look-

of the Danebury Metal Detecting Club. Andy and Lance are the ultimate odd couple and their only connection is their love of metal detecting. Of course this opens them up to all sorts of mishaps,

ing for something fresh and slightly original. Starring Mackenzie Crook (from the original The Office, who also wrote and directed) and Toby Jones, the series follows the lives and adventures of two members

adventures, misunderstandings and a never-ending source of new plotlines. It has that same British village feel as Midsomer Murders or Jonathan Creek but with even more humour.
