FEW people in their lives will ever entertain the idea of running a marathon, and fewer still will complete one. But how about running across an entire country? And no, not Vatican City or Fiji – how about the length of New Zealand’s north and south island? Well Bright woman Lucy Clark is into the final three months of training to run the 3000km Te Araroa trail in November, normally a renowned epic hiking track that only two other women have ran before. The fastest completed run by a female is 78 days, and Lucy is setting herself a goal of under 70 days. That’s 70 days, averaging more than a marathon a day, and taking in enough elevation to summit Everest nine times. Lucy, 33, works from her Bright home as a media manager for the health insurance company Bupa, but when she’s not behind a computer, she’s chalking up some pretty scary hours out on the trails around Bright. After cycling the UK top to bottom with her husband Tom a few years ago, she got thinking about other epic journeys she could attempt. A standard week of training has built up to involve running about 110km, plus a couple of gym sessions to stay strong. The cooler weather of winter came as a welcome relief for Lucy, but it also meant dark, icy mornings running by the bouncing pool of light coming from her head torch. Now in spring and with only three months to go, Lucy said she’s feeling as fit as ever, and despite an intense 12-hours of training each week balanced with a full-time job, has avoided injuries and illness. She said even more important than the 110km she’s running each week, the key to her success in training has been a disciplined indulgence in sleep.

Conjunctivitis in pets CONJUNCTIVITIS is a very common condition of cats that many animals will struggle with. The conjunctiva is the moist tissue that surrounds the globe of the eye. Conjunctivitis is a broad and nonspeciďŹ c term of the inammation of the ocular mucosa. As the structures of the eye are very closely interlinked and the causes of conjunctivitis are often not speciďŹ c to the conjunctiva the animals will often have inammation of other structures within the eye. Most people will notice their cat have one or multiple symptoms: squinting, clear to yellow gunky discharge, sneezing, red eyes and swollen red conjunctiva. The underlying cause of conjunctivitis can quite difficult to determine. The most common causes are: t *OGFDUJPVT )FSQFT WJSVT $IMBNZEJB Calici virus); t "MMFSHJFT MJLF IBZ GFWFS JO QFPQMF t 'PSFJHO CPEJFT JO FZF BOE t 5SBVNB VMDFST PG UIF DPSOFB Determining which of these causes is paramount to ďŹ nding and effective treatment.

with Felix DeNatris BvSc, Veterinarian This can be done by examining the eye, discussing with your vet the environment and activities of your cat. Rarely is laboratory work advised. Infectious causes for cat conjunctivitis are by far the most common. )FSQFT $IMBNZEJB BOE $BMJDJ WJSVT are all spread directly from cat to cat when in close proximity. )FSQFT BOE $BMJDJ BSF CPUI WJSVTFT and such can be very hard to treat and often are unable to be completely cured. They are however easy to prevent by keeping your cat up to date with their routine vaccinations. It is very important to be aware that these diseases spread and keep your animal away from other cats. Allergies and trauma are less commonly and can often be treated with antiinammatories or antibiotics. If your animal is showing signs of conjunctivitis, then it is best to book a visit with your veterinarian to have them checked.

◆ COLOURFUL: We often think about the colour of a ower on a plant, but what about the stem colour?

Winter interest in your garden SO I could write about what you can do in your garden at this time of the year with regards to preparing your garden for spring, but I thought perhaps I’d take another approach. Something that I think a lot about is creating winter interest in your garden and with spring approaching this is an ideal time to source these plants for next year. Now some may already know or may have already caught on to this idea, but have you ever thought about looking past a ower on a plant? )BWF ZPV FWFS UIPVHIU BCPVU UIF TUFN DPMPVS PO B plant, particularly on a deciduous plant? Classic example of coloured branches is the Coral Bark Maple Acer palmatum 'Sango-kaku,’ exposing it branches during the winter months; and what a colour it is, bright coral pink, there are beautiful forms around. Another, Cornus alba ‘Sibirica’, has fantastic red stems. Over the years of growing this plant, although this may seem strange, the best way to achieve multiple stems is to cut to the ground using a method called coppicing. If you cut this species of Cornus to the ground just as it starts to ower, and I mean to ground level, it will grow all new shoots that over the winter months will expose NVMUJQMF CSJHIU SFE TUFNT * E SFDPNNFOE EPJOH UP UIJT Cornus sp only). You can also get a green stem and yellow stemmed Cornus too. There are other plants that have winter interest, plants that produce berries or rose hips, the later particularly.

Rosa rugusa varieties look great, bright orange seed pods stand out a treat on a cool sunny winters day This particular rose you don’t have to treat like other roses types, just prune to shape and it’s done; a very tough rose species. Then there are some of my favourites like ViburOVN PQVMVT A/PUDVUU T WBSJFUZ (SFBU SFE CFSSJFT UIBU look like red currents; Callicarpa with its purple berries or Snow berry Symphoricarpos sp which has white berries. The good old tough as hikers’ boots Dwarf Nandina is well worth a place in any garden with its bright red foliage for most of the year, great plant. If you’re after a tough plant, something that you would like to ower around the winter months in part shade, Mahonia sps is the plant, with its lovely sulphur yellow owers followed by blueish berries. Mahonia’s have a very interesting leaf form and some are quite prickly but worth considering for their toughness and interest. Magnolia doltsopa syn Michelia dolsopa is another beauty. An evergreen large shrub produces magniďŹ cent large creamy white owers with a fruity citric like scent can ower well over the winter months. There are many, many more plants you could use for the purpose of winter interest in your garden. So next time you’re thinking of plants for your garden look beyond the ower of a plant, take interest in the leaf shape, the stem or branch colour and don’t forget about the berries. )BQQZ HBSEFOJOH

Stanton & Killeen 2018 Tempranillo

ONE of my weekend pleasures is to read the travel sections of the newspapers, enjoying the opportunity to experience another country and culture without leaving the kitchen table. Truth is many of the more far ung destinations are places I’m not ever likely to set foot in physically, so doing it through someone else’s eyes is the only way to get there. But now and then a place is described that sounds so good it gets added to the bucket list, the article torn out and stored away in case I might need those hints and tips someday. One of them is Spain, and more speciďŹ cally Basque Country, the idea of those crowded bars, folk singers and delicious pintxos sounding like a dream come true. But on any given Friday night, it’s more likely to be pizza and a bottle of Tempranillo. Stanton & Killeen’s Tempranillo is dark and inviting, juicy and fruity; singing with ripe cherry fruit and moreish in its smooth texture and resonating avour. The Rutherglen winery says it’s known in their vineyard as the Portuguese ‘Tinta Roriz’, however Tempranillo is the popular Spanish name for this versatile and food-friendly variety.

with Naturopaths Belinda McPherson and Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) â—† HAVE YOUR CAKE: Seeing a naturopath doesn't mean you need to give up the guilty pleasures entirely, it comes down to moderation.

A hint of spice and savouriness means the wine sits well with spicy meats and barbecue, the fruity qualities also complementing pintxos, rich pasta and pizza alike. At least there are prawns andspicy chorizo on the pizza – which is as close to Spain as I’m going to get this weekend. Try it at the cellar door in Rutherglen, or go to www.stantonandkilleenwines.com.au.

This Day in History, 1867 THE Rev Francis McCarthy of Wangaratta, who was curate to the Rev Tierney of Beechworth, died on this day in 1867. He was only twenty eight years of age. His funeral was held on the 6th.

See your naturopath and have your coffee, (or wheat and dairy too) WHENEVER someone ďŹ nds out I am a naturopath they are either really intrigued or really sceptical. Often it generates some kind of conversation about the supplements they take or their fear of seeing a naturopath in case they have to stop drinking coffee or eating bread for the rest of their lives. While dietary modiďŹ cation and supplemental prescriptions are part of naturopathic care, seeing a naturopath does not mean giving up all your favourite foods, eating kale or taking a shopping bag of supplements. A large part of my practice focuses on what foods you could add in, rather than take out. There are so many wonderful ways to cook, jazz up basic meals, improving avour, texture and ultimately digestive compatibility for a

but that doesn’t mean everyone has too. Believe it or not, some people can’t digest kale very well either. Studies have shown that if you drink one cup of coffee daily your concentration improves. However, more than one coffee daily can reduce your ability to absorb nutrients and for many people will contribute to poor sleep, anxiety and loose bowels. And, everyone’s threshold is different due to weight, metabolism digestive strength etc. Naturopathic food prescriptions are all about working out what helps or hinders your health with supplements being the icing on the cake. If you are unwell they can be a helping hand while you take time to making lasting changes to your health, diet and coffee consumption.

person that can make a huge impact to how you feel. I often ask people to eat more of those foods, rather than forgo their fav treats. I would never dare ask a new mum to give up chocolate, or coffee. In fact patients are often surprised when I encourage them to eat the choc coated almonds guilt free ( just make sure it’s the good quality dark choc ones!). Everything in moderation. I was taught that the difference between medicine and poison is dose. This is true for food‌and coffee. I was recently complimented on some muffins I made for a girls weekend. The secret was that I followed the recipe‌ adding all of the sugar. If you are diabetic or have other issues with insulin resistance, then yes I will ask that you eat less cake and jam,

“Aside from doing the training and the kilometres running - sleep is the biggest thing. I make sure I get at least nine hours, sometimes 10 or 11 a night,” she said. “Hands down, it’s been the most important thing. That’s the one thing I’d say to everyone about recovery: that’s your priority. If I only get eight hours I notice the difference.” Eating enough has been important too. Lucy said in an age of Instagram models making a living out of posting pictures of their six-pack abs, being strong is much more important than being skinny. She expects to lose between 7-10kg along the way in NZ, so can’t start the run lean. “I would much rather not have a six pack and have some belly fat and be able to run 100km than have a six pack and look awesome and not even be able to run 5km,” she said. “And that’s the important thing I think: focusing on what your body can do rather than what it looks like.” In the past few months word has spread and companies have come on board to

support Lucy’s incredible ambition. Helping her maintain some of that crucial belly fat is sponsor Cliff Bar, who has filled her pantry with boxes of the high-energy muesli bars. Looking at the pairs and pairs of runners at the ready by her front door, you’d think the house was home to a track relay team. Her favourite shoe company Hoka One One have also come aboard as sponsors, along with Bright Physiotherapy. Bright Brewery has made her an ambassador and a local running group, Trails & Ales, has produced an endless number of training partners to run with. Amazingly, Lucy said she’s enjoying her training. She’s a happy runner, and friends seem happy to run with her. On Saturday mornings after downing a suitable amount of coffee, she’s usually joined by some friends for what could be anything from a four- to six-hour run. “It’s one of the really nice things about this: people have jumped on board to help me train, and it’s a good excuse for them to get out for a

four-hour run or a mini adventure on the weekend,” she said. “I’ve actually found the training part kind of easy, because I’ve had the support of so many people coming out and running with me which makes it fun.” But in New Zealand, over 70 days, she will often be alone, and is also preparing for the mental challenge of spending hour after hour with just her and the trail. Running 3000km across a country is more than just a physical and mental challenge, but also a logistical one. She said about 90 per cent of everything has been organised. A campervan has been booked; Lucy has been in contact with previous runners of the trail for months and her husband Tom is preparing to film what he can. For Lucy, endurance is the ability to push on in the face of an increasing desire to stop: which is something she knows she’ll have to confront in New Zealand. with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA ◆ TROUT TIME: This Saturday is the opening day of the 2019 Victorian trout season. Good luck to everybody heading out.

Trout opening Saturday HI everyone, it’s great to be back writing my weekly fishing column after my winter break. The big news this week is that this coming Saturday is the opening of the Victorian trout season. At the moment it is hard to know exactly where to go. The streams are all looking great and have a decent flow of water, however there is rain in the forecast for this week which could alter conditions in some waterways. I think the Ovens River upstream of Bright will definitely be worth wetting a line in. I expect the water to be high, and flowing hard, but a well presented bunch of worms drifted into a backwater would be a great way to start your season. A little further afield, the Mitta Mitta River would be worth a look as well.

Anywhere upstream of Eskdale will be worth trying, including the Snowy Creek which runs into the Mitta Mitta River near the Mitta Mitta township. It will be hard to know exactly which of the smaller waterways will fish well as last summer’s extreme heat may have impacted some streams in a bad way. Only time on the water trying different places will tell, and we cannot put time on the water until the season opens on Saturday. Just a reminder to everyone that the Murray cod season has now closed. It is now illegal to target Murray cod until December 1, with Lake Eildon being the only exception. So, if you wish to get your Murray cod fix during the spring months, head to Lake Eildon.

Mysterious creatures of the sea - jellyfish THEY look like an alien from Ridley Scott’s nightmares, and some of them are just as deadly as his movie creatures, but the ancient and noble jellyfish is a fascinating animal. Among the most extraordinary animals on earth, jellyfish are also some of the most ancient, with an evolutionary history stretching back hundreds of millions of years. Found in oceans all over the world, jellyfish are comprised of 90 to 95 percent water, compared to 60 percent for humans. Named after the Greek word for "sea nettle," jellyfish - or cnidarians - are marine animals characterised by their jelly-like bodies, their radial symmetry, and their "cnidocytes" (pronounced: NIGH-dough-sites) cells on their tentacles that explode when touched by prey. There are about 10,000 cnidarian species, roughly half of which are anthozoans (a family that includes corals and sea anemones); the other half are scyphozoans, cubozoans, and hydrozoans (what most people refer to when they use the word "jellyfish"). Cnidarians are among the oldest animals on earth with a fossil record stretching back for almost 600 million years.

Physiology Jellyfish lack a central nervous system, circulatory system, and respiratory system. Compared to vertebrate animals, they are extremely simple organisms, characterised mainly by their undulating bells (which contain their stomachs) and their dangling, cnidocyte-spangled tentacles. Jellyfish are equipped with hydrostatic skeletons - an innovation that evolution hit on hundreds of millions of years ago. Essentially, the bell of a jellyfish is a fluid-filled cavity surrounded by circular muscles; the jelly contracts its muscles, squirting water in the opposite direction from where it wishes to go, effectively propelling itself through the ocean. Box jellyfish are equipped with as many as two dozen eyes - not primitive, light-sensing patches of cells, as in some other marine invertebrates - but true eyeballs composed of lenses, retinas, and corneas. The sheer amount of eyes give the jellyfish a 360-degree range of vision, the most sophisticated visual sensing apparatus in the animal kingdom. Lifespan Like most invertebrate animals, jellyfish have very short lifespans. Some small species live for only a

few hours, while the largest varieties, like the lion's mane jellyfish, may survive for a few years. Controversially, one Japanese scientist claims that the jellyfish species Turritopsis dornii is effectively immortal - full-grown individuals have the ability to revert back to the polyp stage, and thus, theoretically, can cycle endlessly from adult to juvenile form. Unfortunately, this behaviour has only been observed in the laboratory, and T. dornii can easily die in many other ways (such as being eaten by predators or washing up on the beach). Jellyfish sting Most poisonous animals deliver their venom by biting—but not jellyfish, which have evolved specialised structures called nematocysts. There are thousands of nematocysts in each of the thousands of cnidocytes on a jellyfish's tentacles; when stimulated, they build up an internal pressure of over 2,000 pounds per square inch and explode, piercing the skin of the unfortunate victim and delivering thousands of tiny doses of venom. So potent are nematocysts that they can be activated even when a jellyfish is beached or dying, which accounts for incidents where dozens of people are stung by a single, seemingly expired jellyfish.
