Hitting all the right notes
By CORAL COOKSLEY
ZOE Matthews has packed a lot into her 22 years pursuing a love of music from an early age. It’s taking her to great heights in the local industry while fitting in university studies, which last year took her on a four-week internship to Uganda. Enjoying growing up in Beechworth on a small property where she was close to nature, Zoe has fond memories of attending the local primary school followed by secondary education at Wangaratta High School where a love of singing and a great school band were both discovered. When she is not studying, Zoe can be found singing and playing the keyboard in the band Stacks, which hit the top of the charts with two songs released earlier this year and more recordings to follow. Their debut single ‘Restless’ is a song about frustration with repetitive routine and old habits, and learning to take up space as a woman in a world that tells us to be quiet and amenable. Restless reached number 18 on the Triple J Unearthed charts and number six on the Indie charts. Their next recording ‘Rant Song’ - a catchy duet about house sharing - scored number 21 on the Triple J Unearthed charts and number 12 on the Indie charts. The musician, singer and songwriter attributes her musical passion to her parents who encouraged her to play the piano and started lessons when she was five years old. She enjoyed learning and playing the clarinet in later years too. “I grew up going to concerts with my mum and dad and was greatly influenced by their love of live music, and was also inspired by the music they liked too,” she said.

YOUR GARDEN
The importance of regular vet checks for your pet WHEN was the last time you took your pet to the vet? Many of us associate a trip to the vet with something going wrong - an emergency situation such as an unexpected illness or sudden injury to our pet. However, building a relationship with your vet for regular and routine care can be very valuable. In many cases, regular preventative care can help avoid medical emergencies. One of the key challenges for vets is that animals can’t tell us what’s wrong. Animals can also be very resilient and stoic and can become extraordinarily good at hiding their symptoms. Subtle changes, that might be almost undetectable except through clinical testing, can indicate bigger problems. That often means you pet might be suffering from a health condition for quite some time before the symptoms become serious enough for you to notice. By making regular visits to your vet, you increase the chances that problems are identiďŹ ed early and quickly. This means your pet is less likely to suffer from unnecessary pain or discomfort without your knowledge. Just as importantly, it might also mean that any problems can be successfully treated before they become
with RSPCA more serious, improving the likelihood of a positive outcome. Like humans, every animal is unique. Some are prone to eating too much, some not enough, and some like to eat the wrong things. Some love to exercise lots - some not so much. And many will have strange habits, niggles and quirks, so it’s good to be aware of them. It’s also really helpful for your vet to get to know you and your pet better. That will help them understand what your pet usually looks like, how they behave, and this helps them effectively diagnose and treat any issues. Talking regularly with your vet can help you become a more conďŹ dent pet owner as well. While there’s a wealth of information available on the internet, nothing beats being able to ask your vet about any concerns you have, or seeking their advice. And if an emergency does eventuate, in those stressful circumstances, you might be grateful that you have a vet that you know well and trust.

â—† PERFECT WEATHER: Earwigs love mild conditions so are especially active at the moment.
Earwig control in your garden I’M sure all of you gardeners out there are very frustrated with the havoc earwigs are wreaking in our gardens at the moment. They seem to be around in large numbers making them challenging to control. The good news is I have a few handy tips to help you with these pests. First off all a bit of background about earwigs: earwigs are nocturnal. They spend their days hiding in dark places such as under leaf litter, in old pots, under loose tree bark and pretty much any other dark crack and crevice they can ďŹ nd. They prefer mild conditions which is why they seem to be particularly active right now. Often people think the damage they are seeing is from slugs and
snails and are frustrated with the lack of results even after putting out snail bait. The tell-tale signs of snails and slugs are the silvery tracks they leave behind. The only calling card earwigs leave are lots of holes in the leaves and owers. There are a couple of very effective organic ways to help reduce numbers and damage in your garden. The best bit is most of us will have the items already on hand. t (FU B QMBTUJD UBLFBXBZ DPO tainer and put a little cooking oil and soy sauce in the bottom. Pop the lid on, pinch a couple of small holes in the lid and place in areas of the garden where there has been a lot of chewing happening. Check
in the morning and you might be surprised by how many earwigs you have trapped. You can scoop them out and reuse the container and oil/ soy brew again. t &HH DBSUPOT 6TF UXP PG UIF egg halves (not the lid) of the carton on top of one another and place it around the garden. You will need to check these each morning and dispose of the earwigs in a bucket of hot soapy water. t 4DSVODIFE VQ EBNQ OFXTQBQFS in various locations also traps lots of earwigs. They can’t resist a dark, cool hiding spot. Again check daily and dispose of them as above. Pyrethrum spray is effective as a contact spray, particularly for edible plants as it has no residual effect. Always follow the label instructions.

De Bortoli Rutherglen Estate Pinot Grigio 2019 AFTER good rainfall it seems like no sooner have I cut the grass than it starts growing again. In fact I can hardly make it back to the shed before I turn around and it’s sprung back up. Seeing it thick and lush and thriving in the warmer weather is a wonderful thing and the whole garden really seems to surge forward in leaps and bounds. If only it would stay that way until February. Of course it also means a lot more labouring on the weekend and as much as I enjoy it there are late afternoons when I just about collapse with exhaustion. That’s when I look forward to putting my feet up and enjoying a HMBTT PG 1JOPU (SJHJP 3VUIFSHMFO &TUBUF 1JOPU (SJ gio is made in the traditional, dry unoaked Italian style from fruit grown on the eastern edge of the Rutherglen region. This Day in History, 1856 DECENTRALISED justice was granted to the North East, when the Beechworth Circuit Court area was officially gazetted. The first sittings were held in April the following year, with Judge Williams presiding. Prior to this, serious cases were tried in Melbourne, where death sentences could be passed and carried out. But with the granting of Circuit Court to Beechworth, death sentences could be pronounced locally, and within a few years when the Beechworth Gaol was gazetted as a place where executions could be lawfully carried out, a gallows was erected to save the condemned the added burden of the long rough coach ride to Melbourne.
â—† LISTEN UP: Using masks that strap around your head, rather than your ears (as above) is advisable when wearing hearing aids. PHOTO: Shutterstock
Are you coping with a mask?
IT looks like wearing a face mask is likely to be needed for some time to come. In the meantime, people who have a hearing loss will frequently ďŹ nd it much more difficult to get the message. A mask can reduce the volume of the speaker. The reduction in volume affects some frequencies more than others, most noticeably in the high frequencies. The consequence of this effect is greater for people with hearing loss, as a large number of hearing loss in adulthood includes at least the high frequencies. Overall, mask-wearing affects the clarity of what is said. The other obvious consideration is that masks make lip reading impossible, and this can affect even a listener with normal hearing. Sometimes people may not even
suspect they have a hearing loss until they try to communicate without visual clues being available. If a person has a hearing loss, the wearing of masks can make the difference between getting the message or not. If you are ďŹ nding this a difficult time to hear clearly, it may well be time to organise a hearing test. Mask-wearing in combination with using hearing aids, especially the behind-the-ear types of aids, has raised a number of issues for our clients. It can be challenging to successfully remove a mask while ensuring this type of hearing aid does not fall out. Several people have reported losing a hearing aid in this way. Here are some suggestions to help: t .BLF JU B SPVUJOF UP DIFDL UIBU ZPVS hearing aids are in your ears every time
you remove your mask. t 8IFO SFNPWJOH UIF NBTL SVO ZPVS ďŹ ngers along the lines of elastic at the top of the ear and around the hearing aid, instead of pulling the mask off. t 3FNPWF ZPVS NBTL JO BO PQFO BSFB so if a hearing aid accidently gets dislodged, you can ďŹ nd it easily. t -PPL GPS B NBTL XJUI TUSBQT BSPVOE the head instead of the elastic ties which loop around your ears. Playing with friends, at school concerts and in school musicals, Zoe also took part in songwriting programs and entered competitions. “I wrote songs and participated in the Victorian Kool Skools program from years nine to 12 - it’s an exciting recording and multimedia project and a great opportunity for secondary students,” she said. “The program took me to Melbourne four times for recording over a few days and CDs were released a few months later.” It’s no surprise to see Zoe now a member of the Melbourne-based five-piece with friends Bell Aitkenhead, Finn Buchhorn, Lachlan Fox and Tara Graves, who are all stud-
ying the same degree. They have been playing together for two years and all find time for their music. “We’re a motivated group where we juggle and balance studies to play in the band,” Zoe said. “We’ve played in pubs, for friends and at fundraisers. “Our first big public gig last year was at the Beechworth bonfire night at Lake Sambell and we had more shows planned for this year until COVID happened.” Studying a four-year science degree - the Bachelor of Science Advanced - Global Challenges (Honours) at Monash University, Zoe is enjoying learning about sexual and reproductive health with a university industry-partnered
Honours project where she was given the opportunity to work with Marie Stopes Australia. Marie Stopes Australia is a leading provider of sexual and reproductive healthcare, including contraception, vasectomy and abortion services. “I was able to research nursing and midwifery education and training in innovative models of sexual and reproductive healthcare,” Zoe said. “I also went to Uganda last year on a four-week internship with the Ugandan Youth Alliance for Family Planning and Adolescent Health (UYAFPAH) started by a group of Ugandan university friends who noticed that young people were missing out on crucial sexual and reproductive health informa-
tion and access to sexual and reproductive health services. “I learned a lot.” Zoe, who plans to work in public policy or advocacy, also began working as a volunteer at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) this year before the coronavirus pandemic struck. “I helped with ASRC’s community garden in Clayton where vegetables and fruit are grown and taken to the centre in Footscray for distribution,” she said. Zoe believes sharing food brings people together with the community as well as family and friends. “I also believe that food rescue programs need to be in place too, to help people who are struggling and to prevent

food going to waste,” she said. With a love of Beechworth, Zoe said it is a great place for young people to grow up and looking back she sees the strong sense of community. “Everyone supports the community, there are festivals, farmers markets and concerts and I remember looking forward to them where they were all a lot of fun,” she said.

GONE FISHING
◆ YELLOW FEVER: A typical Lake Nillahcootie yellowbelly caught last week on a Lipless Crankbait. The fish have not been huge, but they’ve been plentiful with a few nice sized fish for the table among them.
Yellowbelly still running hot at Lake Nillahcootie GEE I love this time of the year - warm days, storms, abundant wildlife and great fishing. Once again Lake Nillahcootie is the spot to be this week as I have received quite a few reports of great fishing as well as experiencing great fishing there myself. Last Wednesday I went over there with my Dad. We spent the first hour in the car waiting for the rain to stop before hitting the water just after 5pm. By sunset we had caught 11 yellowbelly and one Murray cod - all fish were small. A couple of the yellowbelly may have been legal size, but if they were it was only just, and we released them to grow bigger without measuring them. We caught yellowbelly on live yabbies, worms and a lipless crankbait lure called a Pontoon21 Beta Vibe. The video from that trip can be found on my YouTube channel “Robbiefishing”. It’s not just Lake Nillahcootie that is fishing well for yellowbelly at the moment though. Lake Hume, Lake Eildon and Lake Eppalock are all fishing
with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA quite well if you are looking to travel a little bit further. Spring is the best time of the year to target yellowbelly and fresh water flowing into the lakes really fires them up. The trout streams are fishing well too with the water still cold enough to keep the trout active. Some of the streams are running quite high due to recent rain and can become dirty quite quickly after rainfall thanks to the ground being so wet, but the fish are biting very well. I have had success bait fishing with worms as well as casting small Strike Tiger soft plastics in some of the smaller streams across the region over the last week. This high water will have many benefits for the region’s trout streams.
THE sixth Annual Australian Women in Wine Awards (AWIWA) is being held on November 24, and Milawa senior winemaker, Cate Looney, from Brown Family Wine Group is in the running to take out the top prize. “We are proud to announce that our senior winemaker, Cate Looney, has been named as a finalist for the Winemaker of the Year at the Australian Women in Wine Awards (AWIWA),” said Brown Brothers spokesperson, Katherine Brown. “Cate is a highly regarded and awarded winemaker and has been with the Brown Family Wine Group for 15 years. “We are so proud of Cate for this achievement.” Ms Brown said Cate was promoted to senior winemaker in 2016 and is the leader in Moscato winemaking in Australia She is responsible for the day to day operations of the 20,000 tonne Milawa winery, producing both commercial and premium wines across a multi-branded portfolio. Cate is also responsible for the Brown Family Wine Group traditional method sparkling wine range, and has been the driving force behind the exceptional quality of the Patricia and Non-Vintage Pinot Noir Chardonnay wines, two of the most awarded sparkling wines in Australia. In her own words, Cate said, “I find that looking after the traditional method sparkling portfolio at Brown Family Wine Group is such a pleasure. “These wines challenge my winemaking as they require a high level of detail to get a finished wine with finesse and flavour, great bubbles, and are also so rewarding to drink.” The Australian Women in Wine Awards program celebrates Australian women in wine, acknowledges and rewards the work of women in the wine community, as well as community leaders who champion equality and fairness for all sexes in the workplace. Cate is one of three finalists - the other women are from South Australian and Tasmanian based wineries, and due to the COVID situation, the awards will be live streamed this year from the AWIWA Facebook page. ◆ FINAL THREE: Senior winemaker at Brown Family Wine Group, Cate Looney, is a finalist for Winemaker of the Year.
member and highly lauded wine journalist, Jeni Port, said that in such an unusual year, it was ‘extremely satisfying to see that there has been a particularly strong collection of entries this year with some new names and amazing tales of resilience.’ “I think this is something that brings this year’s awards into their own,” she said. “We asked entrants to tell us about their year, including the challenges and they all rose to the occasion. “What’s more, their businesses often thrived and they learnt so much more about themselves and their abilities. “It’s been wonderful to read their stories.” The awards - which are owned and
operated by The Fabulous Ladies’ Wine Society - are the only awards program for women in wine in the world and according to their website, they seek to support and mentor women, share experiences, encourage and inspire and highlight, where they see it, the need for change. Brown Family Wine group has been an active supporter and sponsor of AWIWA since its inception but this is the first time Brown Family Wine Group has had a team member make the final listing. The awards ceremony will be streamed live at 7.30pm on Tuesday, November 24, and will be available to view online at https://m.facebook.com/ events/2404054693242997.
