Self-publishing a real option

◆ SELF LOVE: Self-publishing is more accessible these days, no matter your genre. PHOTO: Kieren Tilly

By SIMONE KERWIN FOR some writers, the decision to self-publish their book has too many negative connotations, and they allow their work to remain unseen rather than enter the platform; for others, like local author Belinda Harrison, it’s an option chosen willingly. Belinda is now three books deep into her self-publishing journey with the ‘Thermopylae Bound’ series. “It’s definitely not something that everyone wants to do, or can commit to the

time it takes,” Belinda said. “For myself, it’s only been in the last couple of years that I’ve been ready to look into what self-publishing really consists of and make the decision to do it.” The six books in her LGBTQIA epic fantasy/ romance series were already written before she started on the self-publishing journey. While she had queried a few national publishers, they couldn’t quite see where they might fit in the market and, being from a new author, they weren’t prepared to take on the risk.

“I completely understand the decision; the series definitely crosses a number of genres, and would be hard for a marketing department to pin down,” Belinda said. “I suppose that’s the advantage of self-publishing - I can tap into and find my own ‘people’ on social media and on the internet who love those cross-genre books or one of the aspects my books offer, and are willing to take a chance on it without spending a lot of money.” Belinda said while there were many advantages to releasing your own book, you were also then responsible for everything - from the

cover design, to having your work professionally edited, which platform/s to release it on, who will print the hard copies and how many should be printed, along with all the sales, and marketing and promotional aspects including explaining to people why they should buy your book, why they’ll enjoy it, and where they can get it. “It’s definitely not for the fainthearted, and there are many times in the past couple of years where I’ve questioned my own decision and wondered if I should just abandon the whole thing,” Belinda said.

Hyperthermia (heat stroke) WITH the warmer weather, our pets cannot simply take off their jumper, so it is important we provide them with a means to cope with the heat. Heat stroke is a life threatening condition seen by many veterinarians over the warmer months. Animals can present with signs ranging from excessive panting, excessive salivation, vomiting or defecating blood, seizures, wobbliness or respiratory arrest and coma. As the body’s temperature climbs above normal, the internal organs are also affected and can result in secondary issues such as nerve damage and gut ulceration, and excessive inammatory response (SIRS) is elicited. Depending on the severity of the clinical signs associated to the hyperthermia animals may require hospitalisation and unfortunately some may not survive the internal damage. Where possible, treatment is aimed at correcting the increased temperature and treating any internal damage. The cause of the heat stroke may

with Freya Williams, Veterinarian be as simple as a dog knocking over his only water source for the day, or an excessively long walk/run on a hot day. Other causes often seen are locking dogs in hot cars while “quickly popping into shops. Brachycephalic dogs (dogs with a short wide head) such as pugs, bulldogs, Staffordshire terriers and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are at an increased risk of hyperthermia due to anatomical deformities such as elongated soft palate, tracheal hypoplasia and stenotic external nares. To avoid a potentially fatal situation, make sure your pets are not locked in cars on hot days (or even mild days), make sure there are two water sources for those left unattended throughout the day and avoid excessive exercise on hot days.

◆ HY-DING OUT: It’s a good time to prune and shape your hydrangeas during midsummer.

Pruning in the Summer months

TRADITIONALLY, midsummer is a good time to look at revitalising many plants after they have owered or are looking tired from their spring ush or a midsummer scorching. I prune most of my Salvias particularly the microphylla, gregii and nemorosa varieties, doing this allows these plants to recover, put on new growth and encourages them to ower again right through autumn to almost winter. Dead heading of roses will encourage more owers and growth, along with feeding this will also encourage growth and a third ush of owers. It is the best time to prune lavender, pruning now allows the plant to put on new growth before winter. Prune them to shape while still leaving some foliage to take up nutrients and stimulate new growth. Never prune to bare wood or they will die. I also prune my hydrangeas now such as the microphylla varieties. When pruning I remove any old ower heads, dead or old stems

and generally shape the bush and prune down to a double bud. I usually remove up to 50 per cent or more of growth. By pruning now this ensures that your plant will produce the stems essential for owers to develop on the maturing wood for next season and will help the plant cope better for the rest of summer. For hydrangea quercifolia (oak leaf hydrangea) and paniculata varieties I leave their ower heads on a little longer as you can get some beautiful ushed red or pink tones on the old owers late summer to early autumn, I then prune these to shape and remove the old ower heads once they have ďŹ nished, I don’t prune as hard as the microphylla varieties. You can prune your fruit trees too, particularly if they are producing too much fruit or getting too large or have fruit that you cannot reach, removing this fruit and any unwanted fruit will also help in the control of fruit y. When pruning fruit trees in summer, focus on minor cuts. Save the extensive pruning for when the tree is dormant.

What should I do in the garden? Feed your plants after pruning with a complete fertiliser to promote new growth and owers. Go for one with a good percentage of potassium for more owers and make sure to water it in. If you haven’t already, use a wetting agent and good mulch on your garden - it’s not too late to do so - and this then makes things much easier for you and your plants over the rest of the summer by maximising water penetration into the soil and minimising water loss. On a hot day the best way to cool heat-stressed plants is to hose them down. It cools the plant and reduces the need to transpire so much water to cool itself. This does not burn the foliage; in fact, it reduces burning from dehydration. Keep the water up to your veggie garden. Don’t allow fruiting plants to dry out while forming fruit or the fruit will lack avour, juice and quality. Keep an eye out for sucking insects on the foliage. - Happy Gardening.

Pfeiffer Wines 2018 Marsanne FOR some reason my favourite variety of cucumber is not performing in the veggie patch the way it usually would at this time of year. The plant itself is long, lush and abundant with bright yellow owers, but where I’d normally struggle to keep up with all the fruit, the sweet baby green cukes themselves are few and far between. Maybe I’m just being impatient, but I’ve resorted to playing bee, poking around and pollinating, as the real things don’t seem to be back to work after their summer holidays. It’s a shame because they are just so delicious and a cooling delight at a time of year when you really feel like something refreshing. One of the things I really enjoy about Marsanne is its inviting aroma of blossom, enough to attract any bee, and Pfeiffer’s version is an ideal example. The straw coloured wine has a bouquet which is reminiscent of citrus blossom. The avour is vibrant and quite mineral with some citrus spring at ďŹ rst, before mellowing to a longer and deeper creaminess. It also offers more complexity

with Anita McPherson

than some drink-now white varieties; its avour leaning toward a honeyed nougat which stays with you a while - before the crisp and dry citrus ourish. Lightly chilled you can really enjoy that creamy texture, which is great with dishes of white meats, grilled vegetables or perhaps crunchy bruschetta topped with your own homegrown tomatoes and basil. At least we have a plan bee. Available from the cellar door in Wahgunyah or go to www. pfeifferwinesrutherglen.com.au.

This Day in History, 1952 ANOTHER serious fire which caused loss of life broke out on this day, a few days after the Barnawartha fire. Fire raged over a wide area in the Lurg, Greta, Hansonville, Moyhu and Molyullah districts, resulting in two deaths and the destruction of 29 homes, three churches, one hall and a post office.

with Naturopath Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) ◆ ALL THE FUN: Without the headache. Inspired and attractive non alchoholic cocktails can be a great alternative for guests at your party who don’t like to drink.

How to create a party atmosphere with less alcohol

HOLIDAYS, warm weather, entertaining, festivities, everyone having fun with a drink in their hand. This is what summer is all about. With all the holidays, social events and public holidays there are a lot of occasions to enjoy a drink. It seems, however, that those looking for a non-alcoholic beverage are often at a loss. The champagne cocktails look much more elegant and grown up than a glass of lemonade and a cold beer much more tempting than a glass of water or soda water. If you do not offer some kind of exciting looking and tasting non-alcoholic version at your parties you end up creating a divide between those guests who are partaking in festive drinking and those who are not. Think about your guests who are designated drivers, pregnant women, teenagers and those who don’t really like alcohol. You can easily create a relaxed more inclusive party atmosphere that allows everyone to celebrate with or without the alcohol. Punches and mocktails are a great way to show off your

creativity. Adapt clever garnishes from a cocktail book, look up some ideas online or come to our workshops. Experiment with different juices, avoured mineral waters and tropical fruits. Use these easy cocktail substitutes as a guide: Beer: white grape juice, ginger ale; Cognac: Peach, pear, or apricot nectar or juice; Sake: Rice vinegar; Tequila: Agave nectar; Vodka: White grape juice mixed with lime. Garnishing is important to create an element of excitement and fun for the non-alcoholic drinks. Dress up your drinks with these accessories: Sprigs of mint; Fruit skewers/stirrers; Wedges of lemon; Lime or grapefruit; Edible ower ice blocks.

Self-publishing a real option Ŷ

From page 1

“But then I’ll get a great review or a personal email or message from someone who tells me how much they love my characters or the world I’ve created, and I remember why I started writing in the first place - I want to touch people and connect with them and share my stories with them.” Self-publishing platforms have become increasingly easier to use, and Belinda believes this is allowing more writers to get their work out into the world. “I know a number of local selfpublished authors, and we all write in different genres - Brooke Strahan writes thrillers, Frank Prem writes poetry, Jodi Gibson writes contemporary women’s fiction, and I write fantasy, which just proves that anyone in any genre can do it if you’re prepared to put in the work,” she said. The third book of Belinda’s ‘Thermopylae Bound’ series was released

in paperback in October, 2019, and the more fantastical elements are starting to colour the series alongside the romantic relationship between the two main characters. “It does take a bit of a darker turn in the latter stages of this one, but people have really loved that - they can see that it’s not how Skylar would normally act or react and they’re like, ‘What are you doing? Calm down, pet!’, which is exactly how I hoped they would respond.” The series also features a lot of mythology and stories about heroes and gods, knowledge Belinda loves to share with readers. “A few times my editor has had to pull me up and ask me why I’m telling a specific myth or story, and if I can’t tell her how it relates to something in that book or one that’s coming up, she’s made me cut it,” she said. “So basically, if I’m telling you something, then there’s a reason for

it, even if at first it’s not obvious.” With the final book of the series out on Kindle on February 21, Belinda is dividing her attention between marketing the series, and a number of other stories she has in the works - a couple of which she has specifically earmarked to pitch to traditional publishers when they’re finished. “I still dream about the day that email arrives saying that a traditional publisher wants to publish my book, but if that never happens, then I’m okay with that, and I won’t stop writing or producing works, even if only a few people ever read them,” she said. Belinda’s first three books are available in paperback from Edgars Books and News, and Booktique in Wangaratta, Yack Books in Yackandandah and Bush Gatherings in Violet Town, with the fourth - ‘Dark Thermopylae’ - due out in April or May this year.

GONE FISHING

TECH & SCIENCE

◆ SLIM PICKINGS: One of many small redfin caught at Lake William Hovell over the last week.

A great way to beat the heat

IF there’s a better way to beat the heat than spending the afternoon at Lake William Hovell swimming and fishing then I need to hear about it. I have been up there three times in the last week and loved every minute of it. On all three occasions I caught redfin. In total I have caught around 25 to 30 redfin across the three trips, with not one of them being big enough to bring home for a feed. The biggest was around the 20 to 25cm size. My filleting skills could have ensured a small feed, but one that size is not enough, so I released it. My redfin have been caught both from my kayak and from the bank. All have been caught on lures. From my kayak a diving lure called a Damiki Disco 38 did the damage. From the bank it was a Strike Tiger nymph in “banana shock” colour, and a Strike Tiger 1.5” grub in ‘Junebug’ colour that gave the best results. Locally the Ovens River has been ticking over OK with a few Murray cod and trout cod being caught. I have not heard any re-

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ WWW: The inception of the internet began in the 1960’s, but it wasn’t until 1990 that the world was first introduced to the world wide web. Today, we can scarcely imagine our lives without it.

A brief history of the internet with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA ports of big numbers of fish, just a few here and there. Bait seems to be accounting for more cod than lures at the moment, with cheese being a good bait, as well as, believe it or not...chicken nuggets. My friend Tim Galley fishes often and has been catching a few cod on chicken nuggets in Wangaratta. Tim has also picked up a couple of nice cod using a Deps Buzzjet surface lure. For those that love fishing at Lake Mulwala, I have not had many reports from down there. Whether it is quiet, or whether people are just not telling anybody about their catches I do not know. Either way. I personally prefer to fish Mulwala in the autumn, I find it fishes better then.

DO you remember what the world was like before the world wide web? I lived roughly the first twenty years of my life without an internet connection, yet now I can scarcely imagine life without it. And while I’m probably a heavier user than most people, I’m sure I’m not alone in shuddering at the thought of living without it. Heralded as one of the greatest achievements in modern history, the internet has irrevocably altered human civilisation in ways we have not yet fully grasped. It has changed the way we communicate, the way we transfer information, the way we learn, the way we consume, the way we are entertained, the way we receive news, and even the way we govern nations. Where once so much of the world was isolated from each other, that isolation is shrinking at an ever increasing rate. Where once we were beholden to mainstream media for information about our nation, or countries overseas, now almost all the information we could ask for comes from all sorts of different sources, and is only a quick search away. Children born only a few years ago will most likely have their entire lives chronicled online in one form or another. Long before the base technology existed to build the internet, Nikola Tesla theorized the idea of a world wireless system in the early 1900’s. But it wasn’t until the early 1960’s that actual schematics

were drafted for an ‘Intergalactic Network’ of computers by J.C.R. Licklider. In the late 60’s, the U.S. Department of Defense funded the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network. ARPANET used packet switching to allow multiple computers to communicate on a single network. In the 1970’s, scientists Robert Kahn and Vinton Cerf developed Transmission Control Protocol and Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), a communications model that set standards for how data could be transmitted between multiple networks. Slowly, these building blocks were put together, with ARPANET adopting TCP/IP in 1983, and from there researchers began the business of assembling the ‘network of networks’. And lastly, in 1990, the internet took on it’s modern day recognizable form when Tim Berners-Lee, the man dubbed “The Father of the Internet” invented the World Wide Web, the interface by which we access information online. In the same year, the first website - info.cern.ch became accessible. The site itself contains instructional text and hyperlinks about the world wide web and how to use it. From then on, the number of publicly available websites grew exponentially each year. In 1993 there were 130 websites, in 1996 there were 100,000, and now there are more than two billion websites and counting, although only around 400 million are currently active.
