A LOVE for and care of the land has been in Tom Croft’s blood since his birth on a wool-growing property south of Armidale near Uralla on the Northern Tablelands of NSW. The passionate land lover retired from full-time work and his position as regional Landcare coordinator for North East Catchment Management Authority in June this year, having held the role for the past 18 years. “I grew up on a farm so I think I was always destined for a life on the land,” Tom said. “After school and some travel, I met and married my wife, Cathy, and we established a farm revegetation contracting business in the late 1980s. “Unfortunately, our business was severely affected by the drought of the early 1990s and that resulted in us moving to the North East of Victoria for work.” While Tom was still working part-time on his family’s farm, he and Cathy joined a new Landcare group which was focused on revegetation dealing with the extensive dieback across the Tablelands. Put simply: dieback is when a tree or shrub starts to die from the tip of its leaves or roots backward and can be caused by disease or unfavourable conditions. Landcare, or as it was then called Land Care, was established in Victoria in 1986 by Joan Kirner, who was then Minister for Conservation, Forests and Lands, and Heather Mitchell, then president of the Victorian Farmers Federation. With the farming background still firmly entrenched in Tom’s soul, he began studying environmental management and completed his degree in 1994, gaining a job as Landcare coordinator for groups in the Mitta and Upper Murray catchments the same year. “Through my involvement in Landcare, I applied for a role with the North East Catchment Management Authority in 1998 to administer the Natural Heritage Trust (NHT) grants,” Tom said.

Environmental enrichment for stabled horses HORSES are naturally social animals and spend 50-70 per cent of their time grazing pastures, with the rest of their time spent drinking, resting and grooming. Where horses are required to be stabled, their environmental conditions are often very different to those in which they have evolved. The restricted access to pasture and normal environment in stabled horses has been linked to the development of stereotypical and abnormal behaviour. Environmental enrichment is defined as the modification of a captive environment to improve the biological function of animals (Newberry, 1995). Many studies have investigated the importance of environmental enrichment on horse health and welfare. The following mechanisms can be implemented to improve horse welfare when stabled. 1. Forage - it is well known that stabled horses should be provided with hay to replace foraging behaviour, but

with Ellie Merritt, Warby Street Veterinary Hospital there is now evidence to suggest that providing many different types of hay improves horse welfare and reduces abnormal and stereotypical behaviour. 2. Stable design - the use of a window or lower stable walls allows horses to express their normal behaviours of environmental monitoring and social interaction while also providing visual enrichment. 3. Brushes attached to the stable wall or a pole - these allow horses to exhibit their normal grooming behaviour, like they would scratch on a tree in the paddock. 4. Novel objects - the use of balls and ropes while not addressing the underlying problem, do allow horses to redirect their stereotypical behaviour towards the object.

◆ PROBLEM PLANT: Hypericum perforatum or St John’s Wort was introduced into Australia for medicinal purposes but is now considered an invasive weed. PHOTO: Washington State Noxious Weed Control Board

Problem plants in your garden LET’S face it, 2020 has been a very challenging year. Recently, our local ABC radio station was asking listeners ‘if 2020 was a food, what would it be?’ People responded with all sorts of suggestions tripe, spam and brussel sprouts. The, apparently disgusting, delicacy of Icelandic fermented shark also got a mention. But apart from feeling sympathy for harmless brassicas, the question got me thinking: ‘if 2020 was a plant, what would it be?’ A few contenders come to mind. You might know the ones - plants which seemed appealing initially; full of promise and potential. They looked good in the nursery, but really just became a disappointment when you brought them home. I have had quite a few of these experiences - mostly because I chose something that wasn’t suited to our climate zone or soil type. But what about those plants which grow too well? I asked a few colleagues and their answers included Blackberries, Lantana, St John’s Wort and Gazanias. These are all invasive weeds in Australia and there are hundreds more. Most have been unwittingly introduced over the last 200 years. St John’s Wort, for example, was introduced into Australia as a garden ornamental and medicinal plant. It was cultivated in the Adelaide and Melbourne Botanic Gardens in the 1850s.

By 1880 it had escaped from a local garden in Bright and is now a widespread weed of temperate Australia. Did you know that 65 per cent of the exotic weedy species in Australia started out as garden plants? Unfortunately gardens also comprise the major pool of future weeds. This means that we all have a part to play in preventing further problems. We can all be responsible gardeners. If you like a plant that is potentially invasive, think twice before you plant it. Ask yourself, can I manage to keep it in check? Are there hybrid cultivars which are much less likely to form viable seed? Much better still, can I choose an alternative plant? “Grow Me instead” is an initiative by the Australian Government and the Nursery Industry Association which provides handy information about potential weeds and some good garden alternatives. There are “Grow Me Instead” brochures relevant to each state available online at growmeinstead.com.au. As an example, the spreading groundcover commonly known as Periwinkle (Vinca major) can be replaced by more suitable groundcovers such as Ajuga reptans, Fan Flower (Scaevola sp.) or Native Violets (Viola hederacea). As gardeners, we all have a crucial role to play in stopping weeds at their source. What problem plant would you nominate if 2020 was a plant?

Brown Brothers 2015 Patricia Shiraz ON a cold and rainy weekend I decided to make a traditional Beef Bourguignon. This time it wasn’t the short cut, bung-it-all-in-together version where packet bacon and dried herbs substitute for the real thing, but the painstakingly, laborious one Julia Childs banged on about. There were dozens of small steps and it took absolutely ages to complete but it tasted so good it just about brought tears to our eyes. Maybe I’m not going to do it every weekend but once in a while I am going to make the effort because sometimes close enough simply isn’t good enough. We also opened a bottle of Brown Brothers Patricia Shiraz because it is the kind of wine which makes a ‘once in a while’ wine drinker understand what all the fuss is about. This Shiraz is part of Brown Brothers’ flagship range which is named in honour of family matriarch, Patricia Brown. The fruit was harvested in parcels from a number of the family’s vineyards and each spent 18 months in specially selected French and American oak. The wine has a deep inky colour and is quite aromatic - think

ripe blackberries and soft plums baked with toasty, peppery spice - and the heady flavour is rich and long. But what is really extraordinary is the way it feels in the mouth kind of supple with the velvety sensation of melting chocolate that makes you not want to let it go. (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) ◆ BLOATED: Salt intake, food intolerances and dehydration can all lead to fluid retention.

Fluid retention - the puffy factor HAVE you ever wondered why some days your rings will fit perfectly and the next will be squashing your fingers? Or why your feet won’t fit in those summer sandals? And, why is it that suddenly one day you’re 3kg lighter or heavier than the day before? Fluid retention is that ‘puffy, heavy’ feeling, and happens when the body fluids swell, causing weight fluctuations and general tissue tightness and stiffness in the area affected. Some people notice it only in their ankles and feet, for others it is the breast tissue, or maybe you notice systemic swelling - which means that the whole body goes up and down

with fluid changes. Occasionally patients will present with digestive bloating, caused by fluid retention, especially in women who only experience pre-menstrual bloating. Fluid and puffiness is a normal response to a bite, burn or injury. But if you have residual puffiness after the pain and discomfort is gone, it means that complete healing has not occurred. For mild to moderate fluid retention, natural therapies can be of great benefit. Is your diet involved? Salt: high salt intake has been linked to fluid retention Food intolerances: leading to

systemic inflammation. If you suspect food intolerance get it checked out. Dehydration, poor electrolyte intake and eating MSG can contribute to puffiness in some people. Is your lifestyle making it worse? Stress: due to sugar and salt cravings, but long term stress will also effect the way your body processes and removes fluid Sedentary lifestyle: Fluid gets trapped in the body when we don’t move. You need to increase circulation by moving and stretching daily. So often, it is not one, but a combination of these that leads to overall puffiness. See our naturopath, Belinda, to work out your causes and treatment plan.

THERE were few more dangerous mines in Victoria than the Eldorado mines, and few mines at Eldorado more dangerous than the McEvoy. On this day in 1872, the treacherous drift that could at any time burst into the mine flooded in, trapping two miners, John Reid and John Nicholls. Reid and Nicholls were partially buried by the fall and it was nine hours before they could be extricated. Both recovered from their ordeal.

A lifetime of caring for the land Ŷ

From page 1

“The North East Catchment Management Authority is one of 10 authorities established by the Victorian Government in 1997 to work with local communities, government and funding organisations to protect and enhance land, water and biodiversity resources. “The North East authority covers the catchments of the Upper Murray, Mitta, Kiewa, Ovens and King rivers from Corryong and Omeo in the east to the Warby Range in the west and encourages landholders, community groups and government to address the big natural resource management issues facing our region.” Some of these issues include adapting to climate change, fostering sustainable agriculture, managing heritage and identify-

ing the impacts of ‘tree change’ trends on land management in the North East area. In 2002, when the first Victorian Landcare program commenced, Tom changed jobs within the North East Catchment Management Authority from the Natural Heritage Trust grant section to the role of regional Landcare coordinator. “The regional Landcare coordinator role has been focused on supporting Landcare groups, networks and Landcare coordinators, facilitators and project managers,” Tom explained. “The support is to assist them to meet their goals, gain and deliver grants and work with their community.” Tom’s role saw him working with other coordinators across Victoria to plan and deliver statewide projects.

While there have been many achievements, Tom is proud to have been involved in during his tenure as regional Landcare coordinator - including helping people develop into great community leaders - it’s his leading of the first Victorian Landcare Gateway website he’s most proud of. “The major achievement that I am proud to say that I led from the start was the first Victorian Landcare Gateway website (www.landcarevic.org.au), which also provided the basis for the NSW Landcare Gateway,” Tom said. “The website has helped so many Landcare groups to promote their activities and find and share information, which was quite lacking prior to the inception of social media as an instant communica-

tion and sharing tool.” As Tom contemplates what retirement will look like for him, it doesn’t sound like he’ll spend much time being idle with he and Cathy figuring out how to work around the COVID-19 restrictions as they downsize their home now that their children have moved out. “I am still involved in a range of Citizen Science projects, including iNaturalist and the Atlas of Living Australia and helping groups to get their data onto the atlas but what happens after we move is still open,” Tom said. He also believes that Landcare has an important role to play in the future. “I see a strong future for Landcare; many critical issues and needs remain for Landcare and other dedicated people to help out their group and

their communities. “Landcare has evolved a lot from its beginnings and will continue to evolve to meet the needs of community and environment in years to come.” The first community-based Landcare group was formed near St Arnaud in Central Vic-

toria but now the movement involves thousands of Victorians and more than 600 groups working together to shape the future of our land, biodiversity and waterways. For more information on your local Landcare group, visit www. landcarevic.org.au.
