Looking back, moving forward By LEAH ANDERSON-BYRNE WITH the 10 year anniversary of the 2009 Black Saturday fires approaching, the Into Our Hands (IOH) community foundation board is reflecting on its big achievements and planning its future impact. The Into Our Hands Community Foundation was formed to continue the recovery process after the devastation of the 2009 bushfires. The foundation’s role is to build community throughout the Alpine, Indigo and Wangaratta municipalities and surrounds by making grants, facilitating charitable giving and undertaking community leadership and partnership activities. IOH’s executive officer, Sarah Thompson, has worked with donors and charities for the past 15 years, but has only been a part of IOH since this year. “The idea of giving locally and the comfort of knowing that all money raised in our communities goes back into worthy projects within our communities really resonates,” she said. IOH chair, Loretta Carroll, said she was introduced to the concept of philanthropy and community foundations by the foundation’s patron Alan Brown, who this year was awarded A Member of the Order of Australia for his community involvement in growing philanthropy. “Community foundations encourage innovation and flexibility at a local level, they attract and harness many possibilities to allow change which can lead to amazing growth and unlimited opportunity, and they also make it easy for people to contribute to a pool of funds which is used to support local charitable projects through purposeful grant-making,” she said.

Thryptomene – pretty in pink and white

THRYPTOMENE is an all-Australian genus of the Myrtaceae family. There are about 35 different species. Some are so newly discovered that they are yet to be named. Many originate from the heathlands of South-West Western Australia. All are shrubs of varying heights and habits. They flower profusely with pink or white starry blooms symmetrically massed between neat, heath-like leaves. Some species flower several times a year, but the most prolific burst of flowers is in springtime. Beloved of florists world-wide, T. calycina [Grampians Thryptomene] is one of Australia’s most successful commercially-grown species for export and for

T. ericaea [Centenary Starburst] was chosen as the SA floral emblem for the Centenary of Federation in 2001. All thryptomenes require a relatively well-drained soil in full sun or dappled shade. They are frost, drought and lime tolerant, and generally disease-free. There may be an occasional webbing caterpillar infestation, which can be controlled with derris dust. All can be propagated from cuttings. This ensures maintaining the desired characteristics of the parent plant. And furthermore, thryptomene species respond well to pruning, provided that cuts are made on leaf-bearing stems. Cutting flowers for indoor display is a great way to manage this annual task.

the local cut-flower industry. Another popular Thryptomene is T. saxicola from Western Australia. This is an open, semi-weeping shrub, approximately 1 ½m. X 1 ½ m. Flower colour may be either pink or white. A pink-flowered variety, T. saxicola [F.C. Payne], has been available from nurseries for many years. T. saxicola ”Supernova”, is a cultivar bearing masses of white flowers several times a year. T. ericaea [Mat Heath Myrtle] originates from Kangaroo Island in South Australia. It is a slender shrub, growing to approx. 0.5 to 1 m. Masses of tiny white buds open to reveal starry white flowers with a red centre.

FEATURE STORY

Mammary gland tumours in female dogs DOGS can develop mammary or breast tumours which can either be benign or malignant. Benign tumours are generally slower growing and less likely to spread to other areas of the body. Malignant tumours tend to be faster growing and can spread through the lymphatic system to other areas of the body. The tumours usually affect older female entire dogs - they are extremely rare in bitches that have been desexed at a young age before they have had an oestrus cycle. The statistics for developing tumours have been found to be 0.5 per cent for bitches spayed before the first oestrus cycle, 8.0 per cent for bitches spayed before the second oestrus cycle, and 26 per cent for bitches spayed after the second oestrus cycle. Once the bitch is over 2.5 years old, there is no benefit to be gained by spaying to prevent mammary tumours, although there are plenty of other reasons for spaying older female dogs. The signs of mammary

with Dr Annette Kelleher VETERINARIAN

tumours can be single or multiple masses that grow in the mammary tissue along the dogs abdomen. The tumours can behave in different ways, they may be slow growing but sometimes they grow very quickly and can become ulcerated. If you suspect your dog has mammary tumours it is important to take them to the vet and have the lumps checked. Most mammary lumps can be surgically removed. Surgery can be quite successful if the lumps are benign, however if they are malignant the dog may not do well long term. If the lumps are removed, they can be sent to the laboratory to find out what type of cancer they are and whether they are likely to spread or not.

VET CORNER THIS week’s pet of the week at Wangaratta RSPCA is Billy, an 18 month old, desexed male domestic shorthair cat who is ginger in colour. To see more animals up for adoption at the Wangaratta RSPCA, visit the shelter in Connell Street or phone (03) 5722 2874.

◆ BEFORE AND AFTER: Into Our Hands Community Foundation chair and founding member Loretta Carroll’s property before and after the 2009 Black Saturday fires. PHOTO: Loretta Carrol.

Looking back, moving forward

“The foundation was launched in 2013 with a focus on community ownership and keeping decisions in the hands of local people, and we also felt it was important to build strong collaboration and trust between our local communities and government bodies. “Establishing the foundation brought many community groups together - we ran training sessions on communication and collaboration and project management to assist locals in identifying projects and networking with other communities to get best bang for buck.” Two of the bigger impact stories the foundation would like to share and look back on include an investment at the Old Beechworth Gaol and planting the seeds for future community leadership. In November 2016, the Australian Centre for Rural Entrepreneurship (ACRE) led the $2.7 million community buy back of the Old Beechworth Gaol and at this time, the Into Our Hands Foundation supported ACRE with a strategic grant of almost $50,000. This funding provided ACRE with the organisational capacity and planning resources crucial for the project - it allowed ACRE to plan, engage and work

with the community to make a case for further investment in the site and its potential for the region. Loretta believes it is critical to encourage local giving and a community foundation is a good fit for regional communities to develop ways to create a fund or a mechanism to raise funds for a variety of needs. “Our grants enable local groups to grow their ideas and utilise the wonderful range of local skills and expertise within their own community to help manage these projects which intern promotes resilience and community wellbeing,” she said. In 2016 IOH Community Foundation provided grant funding to support a scholarship place in the Alpine Valley’s Community Leadership Program (AVCLP) which exists to enhance the leadership capacity in North East Victoria and the broader region. In 2018 Maria Berry was the first IOH scholarship recipient, as she had a strong background in aged care and support and a passion for advocating for the rights of older people , preventing and raising awareness about elder abuse and ensuring care, compassion and kindness are core elements of

care strategies with older people. Maria describes participation in AVCLP as ‘life changing’, and since graduating she has established new committees locally to improve quality and style of care for older people and is also working to improve the capacity of the local, North East aged care providers . More recently, Maria was a plenary speaker for the fifth National Elder Abuse Conference which was widely reported and covered by local and national news and radio media and these engagements have led to more discussions about her work with SBS, Celebrate Aging, National Radio Sydney and Council on the Aging and Senior Rights Victoria. Committee member Tammy Atkins said communities can’t always wait for or expect government to step in when they need a hand. “It’s up to us to help ourselves and that’s why it’s exciting to be part of Into Our Hands as it pivots into its next role of being donor driven and puts its focus toward generating local funding to support the economic viability and sustainability of our small towns,” she said.

WANGARATTA thing that I have caught. On Saturday many keen anglers ventured into the hills to fish for trout in the many streams around the region. Many anglers, including myself were caught off guard at how high the water was, and in some cases how dirty it was. On Saturday I fished a total of six

different small streams, all tributaries of the Ovens and King rivers and found the fishing to be very slow. I managed to land a couple of rainbow trout using worms as bait and lost one brown trout on a small soft plastic. The general feeling around the region was of very slow fishing on opening morning. Two anglers I know fished the King and Rose rivers on Saturday, and said while the river was running a little high and fast, with only minor discolouration, there were few fish to be had – they landed two brown trout around a foot each floating worms, but that was all they saw. Possibly the best report I have is from Dane Shearer who did well in the Kiewa River picking up four trout – all were very good size.

Trout opening a bit slow

THE eagerly awaited trout season has opened, but before I get into trout, I want to tell you about a monster Murray cod that was caught and released off the bank at Lake Mulwala in the last week of the cod season. Will Sharp of Tarrawingee sent me a photo of a 125cm Murray cod that he caught off the bank while angling with his family. Will caught the monster cod on a bait of cheese and chicken. Will’s fish is not only the fish of a lifetime, but a great reminder to the many anglers that do not own boats that these underwater beasts can be caught from the bank in areas that see a lot of fishing pressure. Thanks for the inspiration Will, and congratulations on catching a Murray cod far bigger than any-

MOVIE On Chesil Beach (M) BASED on the celebrated novel by Ian McEwan, On Chesil Beach is a powerful, insightful drama about two people, young couple Florence and Edward, both deďŹ ned by their upbringing and bound by the social mores of another era.

DVD Ocean’s 8 (M) FIVE years, eight months, 12 days...and counting. That’s how long Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock) has been devising the biggest heist of her life. The target is a cool $150 million dollars in diamonds--diamonds that will be around the neck of world-famous actress Daphne Kluger.

with Naturopaths Belinda McPherson and Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) â—† NOT 100 PER CENT: Naturopathic medicine can help on your way to feeling your best again after battling an infection.

CD Egypt Station by Paul McCartney TRUE to the inspiration behind its title, Egypt Station’s 14 songs combine to convey a unique travelogue vibe.

BOOK The Silence of the Girls by Pat Barker THE legend of The Iliad retold from the perspective of a woman: queen turned war prize, witness to history.

The role of naturopathy in infections and recovery

ECHINACEA, vitamin C, probiotics: these are the popular ‘kids on the block’ supplements when it comes to infections. Most of you will have them in your medicine cupboard, next to the ibuprofen, even if you ‘don’t believe in naturopathy’. While naturopaths have always used herbs, food and nutrients to prevent or treat acute infections, I think the place naturopathy really shines is in post-viral symptoms. These are the symptoms that linger after the infection has been said to be resolved and keep you feeling ‘just a bit off ’ to ‘quite unwell’, despite there being no medical reason. The cough you still have a month after that cold, the low energy reserve three years after glandular fever was

diagnosed, the recurrent thrush or IBS you developed after that parasite you picked up in Asia (stool sample all clear by the way!), the tinnitus you developed after your last ear infection... Herbs and the naturopathic paradigm are outstanding when it comes to convalescence and implementing a complete recovery in a depleted system. Our supplements are often aimed at supporting the organ or system that is faulting, rather than just killing off the infecting organism. This is why I always say that naturopathy and medical management can be used in conjunction with each other. Let’s use the example of a stubborn sinus infection. Antibiotics might kill the bacterial infection, but 3 weeks later you still have fatigue, sinus pain and mucous.

A naturopath will use ‘alterative’ herbs to drain and detox the glands, ‘trophorestoratives and astringents’ to tone the inamed mucous membranes, diet to reduce the inammatory load and mucous production, and probiotics and immune adaptogens to improve the resistance to another infection. So, it is not just about killing off an infection, but about making the whole environment stronger and less susceptible to recurrent infection. Having said that, the response of herbal medicine in active infection, especially in children, can be powerful. Conjunctivitis, vulvinitis, otitis, glandular fever, sinusitis, laryngitis, coughs, tonsillitis, and UTIs can all respond well to naturopathic care when a trained practitioner is involved.

Pfeiffer Wines 2014 Merlot

www.northeastjobs.com.au

with Anita McPherson UNLIKE our neighbours in the north, east and west, we were lucky in our individual neck of the woods to be blessed with a little rain in August. It sometimes seems hard to imagine that we can be practically a stone’s throw away from each other, yet experience such very different weather conditions. Now all we need is a little sunshine this spring to warm up the ground and the grass will hopefully be up and verdant once again. A resident magpie starting piping up in the middle of August and I experienced by ďŹ rst swoop of the season way back then, letting me know another nest was under construction in the driveway. As annoying as it is, it’s also a reassuring signal that everything happens in seasonal cycles. I’m transitioning from the crock pot inside to the barbecue outside with a bottle of Pfeiffer Wines Merlot. The ďŹ rst thing you notice is the aroma, spicy and vibrant with red berry and cherry fruit and a hint of dried bay leaf. It’s a medium weight with more bright cherry fruit that’s enhanced and enveloped by earthy spice, which seems to make avour linger. This is a food-friendly wine, delicious both with sticky lamb shanks, or with just seared cutlets hot off the grill. And it promises to only improve in the next 10 or so years, so enjoy now and put some away for later. You’ll be prepared whatever the season.

Gluten free choc chestnut cookies AUSTRALIANS are urged to join the #nuts30days30ways challenge this September. Now in its third year, the #nuts30days30ways challenge encourages Australians to snack on a handful of nuts each day, for a month. “Nuts are nutrient-dense powerhouses that can help you manage your weight, look after your heart, live longer and they are great brain food too,â€? said Nuts for Life dietitian Belinda Neville. “The problem is Aussies aren’t eating enough nuts to gain the many health beneďŹ ts. “On average we eat just six grams a day – well short of the recommended 30 grams handful. “This challenge is all about reminding people that getting your serve of nuts a day is just as important as eating your fruit and veggies.â€? Try this recipe from Nuts For Life for a sweet, nutty treat, and ďŹ nd more recipes like this at www. nutsforlife.com.au. Method Preheat oven to 180°C. Line a tray with baking paper. Combine hazelnut meal, cacao powder, baking powder and salt in a medium bowl and mix well. In a jug, whisk together sugar, egg, oil and vanilla. Add wet ingredients to dry and stir vigorously. Fold through chocolate chips and chopped chestnuts.

Scoop chocolate mixture onto the prepared tray with a tablespoon measure – this recipe makes about 18 biscuits. Bake 10 minutes, cool on tray one minute before moving onto a rack. Repeat with any remaining batter. Tip: If chestnuts are out of season, substitute with an equal quantity of another chopped tree nut.

Taking care of business opportunities CHANNEL CHAT

THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS: Great News (Netflix, streaming) This bubbly sitcom, set in a TV newsroom and featuring a mother working as a 60-something intern alongside her daughter, is a fun and easy watch, especially if you like 30 Rock.

PROGRAM: The Employables CHANNEL: SBS TIMESLOT: Wednesday, 8.30pm

All Aussie Adventures (8.30pm Friday, TEN) While the new adventures of the hapless Russell Coight don’t stray far from the winning formula of the original, earlier series, this comedy mockumentary is still a good laugh.

with Kylie Wilson I DON’T have a lot of time for most reality TV shows, and avoid business related ones - like Shark Tank and The Apprentice - like the plague. But I was intrigued by the premise of The Employables, where people from marginalised groups facing long term unemployment are given a chance to work together on a startup with entrepreneur Creel Price.

Applicants arrive armed with business ideas that could change their lives, and extraordinary stories of the challenges they have faced in search of employment. Some of the applicants include a Sudanese refugee; an amputee who hasn’t been able to get a job since losing his leg in an accident; a chef who was shut out of the kitchen after losing his eyesight; and a single

personal growth and encouraging the individuals involved to work as a team, polish their ideas and further fulfil their potential. And while it works to bolster the self esteem of the participants, it does not sugarcoat the

Disenchantment (Netflix, streaming) This medieval fractured fairytale from the makers of The Simpsons and Futurama isn’t as mile-a-minute funny as its predecessors, but it’s still entertaining, and features an excellent voice cast, including Abbi Jacobson, Matt Berry, Billy West and John DiMaggio. harsh realities of marketing and business. It is also a sobering look at the discrimination many everyday Australians face while job hunting and in the workplace, with the first episode alone showing the personal impact

not being able to find work can have on people, especially those who are part of a minority group or marginalised by society. If you want to catch up, earlier episodes of this program are available on SBS On Demand.
