By KYLIE WILSON FROM enjoying the great outdoors to spending quality time with the most important people in their lives, cycling is central to the lives of North East women Lyn McKay and Veronica Tyler. Both women are involved as volunteers at the upcoming High Country Women’s Cycling Festival, now in its second year, and both are passionate about the role cycling has played in their lives. Lyn covers many volunteer roles with the event, from decorating the venue for post-ride celebrations to assembling gift bags and encouraging fellow cyclists from the sidelines as they approach the finish. A keen cyclist for many years, she has been an advocate for the event since it was initially developed by Clare Holdsworth and Michelle Armstrong. Having spent months recovering from dilated cardiomyopathy and associated heart surgery with the support of friends and family, Lyn said her dream during her recovery was being able to complete her favourite ride up Mt Buffalo again – a feat she achieved last year. She said this experience means she knows firsthand the physical and mental battles ride participants work through to get to the finish line, and makes her determined to encourage each rider.

Childhood money moments matter A NEW study by ME has shown a strong link between financial wellness as an adult, and specific money experiences during childhood. But the study also shows that as adults, we tend to overlook childhood money experiences as important. ME surveyed 1000 adults looking for links between financial wellness and an array of typical financial experiences, both growing up and in early adulthood. Of those surveyed, overall 59 per cent described themselves as ‘effective savers’ while 56 per cent described themselves as ‘financially comfortable’ – both markers of financial wellness. But these figures increased significantly for cohorts with key childhood money experiences as well some adulthood money experiences. For example, saving behaviour was highest for those who ‘received advice about money or were involved in money discussions when they were growing up’. And financial comfort was highest for those who ‘were taught more than they need about how to manage money growing up’ or who, as adults, have ‘seen a financial professional’. But some money experiences which are often thought of as important, such as receiving pocket money as a child, were seen as not making a significant improvement in
financial wellbeing. The study also revealed some experiences as potentially having a negative impact on one’s later ability to save and be financially comfortable, including having a family who did not discuss money, or not having been taught enough on how to manage money growing up. The study also showed many adults overlook their childhood experiences as important. When asked when they believe they learned their most important money lessons, the most common answer was ‘starting work’ (38 per cent), followed by purchasing a home (17 per cent), while ‘before leaving home’ was nominated by 16 per cent of respondents. The survey also suggests money lessons are underdone at home, perhaps reflecting the lack of importance adults assign it, with 40 per cent of respondents saying they wish they were taught how to manage money when growing up. ME money expert Matthew Read said “if you want to help your kids be good savers and increase their chances of being financially comfortable, exposing them to good money experiences during childhood is important. “These experiences seem to instil an attitude to money that becomes almost innate later on,” he said.
with Helen van Riet AUSTRALIAN PLANTS SOCIETY (VIC) ◆ STRIKING: The native Australian Daffodil.
Home grown daffodil IT may surprise you that Australia has its own daffodil. The species Calostemma [from the Greek, kalos, beautiful, and stemma, crown] occurs in dryland and rocky ridges in western NSW, north-west Victoria and South Australia. These lovely plants are now rare in the wild due to habitat destruction. This is a great incentive to cultivate them as garden plants. Calostemma sp. belong to the Amaryllidaceae family - the same family as daffodils, belladonna lilies, onions, chives, snowdrops and nerines. Members of this family have bulbs or underground stems and straplike leaves. Flowers have three or six petals and often bear fleshy fruits. C. purpureum was once well-known in the Riverina dis-
trict. Its common name is Garland Lily. A similar species, Calostemma luteum, has yellow flowers. Garland Lilies flower in summer. The bulbs are dormant through winter. Strappy leaves are followed in late summer by delicate clusters of nodding trumpet-shaped blooms on long stems. Following flowering, green fleshy seeds form rapidly. As the stems collapse to the ground, seeds germinate readily in niches between rocks or in moist soil. If you collect the seeds for later sowing, don’t delay -- seeds may sprout before they are planted! They make useful pot plants or rockery specimens. Plant the seeds in autumn and tend with care for their first year. Bulbs will develop and pull themselves
down into the soil. Leaves will emerge the following spring. Seed-grown plants will flower in their second or third year. These hardy Australian bulbs will survive drought and frost and readily form attractive clumps. By mimicking their natural habitat, they will thrive in cultivation. Give them a good soaking in late spring and several more soakings in late summer. A feed of fertilizer or compost in autumn will be beneficial. In my garden, following the incessant heat during January, less hardy plants suffered considerably. Nonetheless, Garland Lilies, like their distant cousins the belladonnas, have not suffered. Bulbs and seeds are occasionally available from specialist Australian plant nurseries and Australian plants enthusiasts.

FEATURE STORY
My dog is scooting SCOOTING, or dragging of the bottom along the ground, is very common in dogs and occasionally cats. The most common cause is worms, usually the common tapeworm, although other worm species may also cause peri-anal irritation. The second most common reason is anal gland problems. Carnivores have two anal glands located just inside the anus at about 5 and 7 o’clock. Anal glands appear to be a territorial scenting gland. It may also be an evolved defensive mechanism in that the anal gland content is a foul smelling fluid that deters attacking predators. Skunks have perfected this with the ability to aim and squirt their anal gland content at possible threats. Anal glands regularly become impacted and enlarged, causing discomfort. Scooting appears to relieve the glands in most cases although if not corrected, chronic anal gland infection and
with Christo Nortje VETERINARIAN even gland rupture can occur. Anal gland problems are more common in small breed dogs and diet and faecal consistency may be factors that influence occurrence. Cats are less prone to anal gland problems. Impacted anal glands can usually be expressed manually but if it recurs on a regular basis, or with chronic infection or rupture, anal gland surgical excision is indicated. Other reasons for scooting include flea infestation/dermatitis, peri-anal skin tags, perianal tumours and in female dogs, perivulval skin fold pyoderma. If your dog or cat is scooting and/or constantly licking at its rear end and is up to date with a good broad spectrum gastro-intestinal wormer and flea treatment, a trip to the vet is highly recommended.

“I have the love, passion and excitement for other people achieving,” Lyn said, adding that the event is “an opportunity to commit to a challenge with a group of cycling ladies sharing the same goal: to cycle up Mt Buffalo”. “It truly is a celebration of women’s cycling,” she said. “Mt Buffalo is very dear to my heart, being a local cyclist. “If I can do it, anyone can.” Lyn can regularly be found riding her bicycle around Wangaratta and to nearby towns with friends, often stopping to enjoy a coffee and a chat, and she said cycling was an integral part of her life. “It keeps us all fit, it’s fun and friendly, and I love being out in the fresh air,” Lyn explained. Fellow cyclist Veronica Tyler is also spending her second year volunteering at the event this year, but she will be making a debut as a ride leader, helping guide other riders in the right direction and encourage them. Cycling regularly with a group of friends, Veronica described cycling as “addictive”, adding that she rode up Mt Buffalo for the first time about four years ago. “There’s nothing better than a really good ride,” Veronica said. “It’s just really good for your wellbeing and it clears your head.” Veronica said she is looking forward to encouraging others in their ride as she has been encouraged by other riders in the past. “Wherever they get to...they’re still winners,” she said. Festival spokesperson, Michelle Armstrong, explained that despite the organic growth in women’s cycling, in an alpine environment where road riding is more challenging, the gender imbalance is strongly evident in cycling and cycle-tourism. “Many female riders consider hills and mountains beyond their capability,” she said. “We want to share our knowledge, build confidence, push boundaries and help women discover new ride destina-

LAST WEEK’S SOLUTION
THE heat has returned. Once again it has been scorching hot over the past week. So hot in fact, that the farmers have been feeding their chooks crushed ice to prevent them from laying hard boiled eggs. The upside to the heat is that it has been associated with a very strong and stable high pressure system which has lent itself to some better Murray cod fishing over the last week. I have had mixed results, catching at least one Murray cod on each evening session. I fished with Kingsley from the Murray Crab Fishing Youtube channel last Wednesday and we caught two small Murray cod, and had several other strikes. The following night Brett Corker went out and caught four Murray cod in a one hour session just on the outskirts of Wangaratta. Kingsley, Brett and I all caught our Murray cod on a variety of lures such as spinnerbaits, hard body lures and surface lures. There has been some fantastic Murray cod fishing in Lake Mulwala, and the Murray River both upstream and downstream of the lake. Blake Wolstenholme of Wangaratta caught a magnificent 98cm Murray cod in the Murray River upstream of Lake Mulwala on the weekend – well done Blake. Early last week I found some OK trout fishing in a small tributary of the King River. The cooler weather had led to cooler water which had turned the trout on, however since then we have had a lot of heat so I am unsure what impact that has had. If the heat has slowed the trout down, I am sure that it will only be a matter of time before things cool down
levels which are very low in many of the small streams flowing out of the hills. I really hope we get some rain this week.

WOW, what a fortnight in media land for supplements! They have been hero-ed and slammed in the media and we thought we would clarify some points. CLAIM: Protein supplements can kill and lead to life threatening heart issues. FACT: Protein powders should not be used for those with advanced kidney disease, without medical supervision. Many over the counter weight loss protein powders contain a lot of stimulants such as guarana and caffeine. When taken in excess, these can cause symptoms of or exacerbation of anxiety type symptoms, eg heart palpitations, nausea, loose and irritable bowels, insomnia, panic, etc. They also leach minerals from body such as magnesium and potassium. These mineral changes in our body can be fatal in extreme cases (excess consumption, rare genetic defects etc) as documented in the story. CLAIM: Vitamin C is amazing for diabetes and probiotics are the cure-all for depression.
FACT: Whilst these may form part of your supplemental regime for the above lifestyle disease and mental health condition, they are rarely successful as a stand alone therapy. And if the underlying drivers/causes of these are not addressed, then you won’t see an improvement in symptoms. Successful depression management needs appropriate follow up and monitoring via GPs and counselors, along with nutritional/herbal advice from trained naturopaths if supplements are to be used. Lifestyle diseases such as diabetes must have dietary intervention to see an improvement or amelioration of symptoms. Again, this needs to be monitored by a trained team (naturopath and GP). CLAIM: Over the counter supplements are dangerous. FACT: When taken incorrectly or alongside some pharmaceuticals, this can be true. In each example given in the media stories on 4 Corners and 60 Minutes, the supplements under debate were
not prescribed by qualified pracitioners, but self prescribed. There are contraindications for many herbs and nutritional supplements. Some cannot be taken with blood pressure medication or with antidepressants for example. There are safety concerns with some supplements during pregnancy, thyroid conditions, cancer and other diseases. Just as over the counter pharmaceuticals can have side effects, so to can over the counter supplements. Sophie and Belinda are university trained naturopaths and spent four years studying the ins and outs of herbs, nutrients, Western medicine and how the body works. We always check for contraindications and confirm efficacy and safety of our products prior to prescribing them. If you know someone who self prescribes regularly or uses herbal or nutritional supplements from someone who isn’t a trained professional, then show them this column and refer them to us for some sound advice.

Dal Zotto Wines 2017 Barbera ANYONE planning a visit to the King Valley, whether for a day, a weekend or a week, would have to include a trip down Prosecco Road to taste the variety the region has become famous for. At the home of Prosecco, pioneers of the variety Dal Zotto Wines wants you to get in the habit of making the celebratory bubbly your first drink, and it’s a notion which is no stretch to abide by. But when hunger kicks in and thoughts turn to Italian-inspired fare like prosciutto, pizza and pasta, I also like to continue further down the wine list and add Sangiovese, Nebbiolo and Barbera to the road trip. Dal Zotto’s Barbera has a deep red, russet tinged colour and a gentle aroma of this season’s delicious plums with a touch of spice. It has a wonderfully earthy quality, with more plum and
with Anita McPherson some cherry fruit, and a hint of savoury chocolate. There’s also length of flavour, culminating in a kind of fresh, dry finish which is accentuated by its spicy character. It makes a logical choice for antipasto or for spicy, meaty dishes like a pepperoni pizza, or as an accompaniment to homemade gnocchi topped with a slow cooked pork ragu – the dry style cutting cleanly through the richness. It’s surely a variety which has dibs on being the second or third drink. Let’s face it – that first one was never going to be the last. TECH & SCIENCE
with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ DESIGNER GENES: CRISPR/Cas-9 gene editing technology brings with it a bevy of possibilities for the betterment of our planet, but serious ethical questions arise - particularly in relation to our own DNA.
CRISPR/Cas-9 - risk and revolution
SINCE its inception in the 1990’s, the internet has been widely held as the most revolutionary product of the past century. But that might be set to change with the strides being made in CRISPR/Cas-9 research and development. However, just as with any new leap forward, ethical questions abound concerning the merits of developing our ability to edit and create designer genes. Starting in the 1990s, scientific researchers discovered that certain types of bacteria and microbes have the ability to edit their own DNA in order to safeguard themselves from attacks. Then, in 2013, researchers at MIT harnessed CRISPR/Cas9 — a family of DNA sequences found in such prokaryotic cells (cells without a nucleus) — to edit the
eukaryotic cells (cells with a nucleus) that make up us humans, along with most plants and animals. The sheer magnitude of this discovery was without parallel, but the general public were largely unaware of this technology until quite recently. Since 2013, CRISPR/Cas-9 lurked in the background of awareness until the inevitable question rose: Is it ethical to edit the genes of a human embryo, and if it is, where is the line drawn? This question took centre stage for a period in late 2018 after a Chinese scientist used this gene editing technique to create the world’s first geneedited human babies. His methodology was considered reckless and controversial by the international scientific community.
I’m a big dystopian future, science-fiction fan, and I fondly remember dissecting the Andrew Niccol film ‘Gattaca’ in my English class. In the film, set in the not too distant future, libertarian eugenics is standard practice. Those with any level of wealth over the past several generations have opted to conceive children through invitro fertilisation and heavy gene-editing in order to produce offspring with no genetic illnesses or defects. The resultant effect of this has led to a society in which those people who were conceived via traditional, natural means are identified via a biometric genetic registry database and discriminated against - with society labelling them as ‘invalid’, while their genetically altered counterparts are labelled ‘valid’.
While such discrimination is said to be illegal, employers routinely find ways to circumvent the law and ‘invalids’ are relegated to menial labour and poverty. The film explores the theme of gene-editing and it’s potential societal impact in a very grounded way, making it easy to imagine how our society could find itself in such a situation. It’s a consequence of this film, other works of fiction, and ethical treatises concerning the subject that much of present day society finds the prospect of genetically engineered humans a very leery subject and one rife with slippery slopes. And while I count myself amongst the wariest - always concerned about the unintended consequences of this policy or that technology which could lead soci-
ety cheering toward Orwell’s nightmare (among other neuroses) - even I can see the overwhelming benefits of CRISPR/Cas-9 technologies, especially when applied outside of the homosapien genome. Researchers at Stanford University recently edited the genes of coral growing in the Great Barrier Reef as a sample test. Due to rising ocean temperatures, coral reefs are globally going through a process called “bleaching” that makes them more prone to starvation. CRISPR/Cas9 has the ability to help - to save coral reefs and the habitat they provide for so many species - by removing the gene that makes corals go through the “bleaching” process. That gene could be re-

placed with one that makes corals more resilient to warm water temperatures. Furthermore, this same technological advancement could lead to the eradication of malaria, saving hundreds of thousands of lives each year by removing the gene from mosquitos that makes them susceptible to the malaria disease. If mosquitos can’t carry malaria, they in turn cannot pass it on to humans. Therefore, while scientists engage in the inevitable ethical debate regarding the role of CRISPR/Cas9 in society, it’s important we remember that embryo modification is only one aspect of this technology, and we should be mindful not to necessarily disregard the entire field if human embryonic editing proves too large a risk.

with SIMONE KERWIN IN an age when there’s more and more of the same on free to air TV, the big takeaway from Chris Brown and Julia Morris’ much-hyped new variety show is that they are at least trying something different. Well…different for us; ‘Chris & Julia’s Sunday Night Takeaway’ is still based on an existing concept, the UK’s ‘Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway’. While we’ve seen enough of
them on ‘I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here’ to know their chemistry works, Chris and Julia would agree it will take a few weeks to iron out the wrinkles - surprisingly including Julia’s visible opening night jitters - before they find their feet in this fast-paced live format. That fine-tuning may include cutting back on some of their segments, after they threw everything possible at the first

episode and ran about 30 minutes over time. There was a lot going on in that first week - Shane Warne as guest announcer; a prank involving Grant Denyer; a quiz giving away prizes ranging from a car to toilet paper; home viewers chiming in with
The Choirboys in a karaoke contest; an elaborate surprise proposal for an audience member; a couple of giveaways; mini-versions of Chris and Julia interviewing singer George Ezra; and what’s set to become a weekly Chris v Julia challenge overseen by
the NRL Footy Show’s Beau Ryan. Audience involvement is central to the variety genre, and there were some lovely moments where we heard stories from the crowd which offered real heart to the show. With a little tweaking, this
could certainly become weekly viewing for families, who are currently starved of appropriate viewing catering for all ages. It will also be interesting to see how it compares to Rove McManus’ ‘Bring Back Saturday Night’, due to premiere on WIN at some stage this year.
