Working

together for the

region

A STRONG love for the North East, its communities, and its potential motivates the members of the Ovens and Murray Regional Partnership (OMRP), established just a few years ago. Local women Susan Benedyka and Irene Grant have both been involved with the assembly since its inception, helping to consult with and advocate for local communities to see them grow and evolve. Susan has a particular passion for improving digital access and infrastructure for the North East in order to make it more competitive on a state, national and even global scale. “It’s all about where we are going to take the region in the future,” she said, noting the assembly has secured funding to develop a “digital plan” for the region, which a number of people are currently working on. Susan said some of the main issues she is focused on as part of the partnership is funding and helping address gaps in digital infrastructure, as well as increasing opportunities in the rapidly advancing digital field, where technology can help change the face of health consultation and diagnosis, tourism, and even the nature of workplaces. She said some of the proudest moments so far was helping secure funds for the forthcoming local digital hub at Wangaratta Library, as well as money for a digital innovation centre in Wodonga.

◆ COLD SNAP: Two of Falls Creek’s canine residents, Millie and Ginger, enjoyed a snow fall on the mountain on the final day of autumn.

Snow opening on the way WITH the cold nights drawing in, snow resorts are bustling in anticipation for opening this weekend. At Falls Creek, opening weekend festivities include the launch celebration of the $9 million Eagle Express chairlift (a high speed detachable quad chair); the opening of the newly renovated Frying Pan Inn and Cloud 9, two of the mountain’s largest venues which has been renovated by the Traverse Alpine Group; and the launch of the Nickelodeon sponsored Children’s Ski School (with the powerhouse children’s entertainment company sponsoring all children’s programs). At Mt Hotham, celebrations will include fireworks and first tracks, as well as shopping, live music and pop up restaurants. At Mt Buller, this Saturday will see a full schedule of free family activity in the Mt Buller Village Square from 3.30-7pm, including lots of children’s entertainment and activities, and Mt Buller Olympians and Paralympians Belle Brockhoff, Anton Grimus, Jakara Anthony and Mitch Gourlay will officially open the season prior to an opening fireworks display. Meanwhile, Mt Buffalo, only a 45 minute drive from Porepunkah and Bright, will continue to have extensive areas of snow at both Dingo Dell and Cresta Valley for snow play and tobogganing, cross country skiing, or simply enjoying the amazing views, with facilities

including a café, day shelter and more. Despite Thredbo resort in NSW banning toboganning and snowplay, Victorian alpine resorts are reassuring visitors that there is no such ban in Victoria. Speaking on behalf of the Victorian alpine resorts, Mark Bennetts, chief executive officer of the Mt Buller and Mt Stirling Resort Management Board, said “tobogganing and snowplay are popular activities for thousands of visitors each snow season, providing a fun and affordable way to experience the snow. “Each of the Victorian resorts are pleased to provide designated areas in which to enjoy these activities”. For more information on Victoria’s alpine resorts, visit snowvictoria.com. Keep an eye on snow cams or ask at your local ski hire business or tourism information centre to find out current snow levels, snow chain fitting advice, and weather at resorts around the area. with MANDI MCDONALD, Gardening Specialist ◆ ICY: Make sure to protect your vulnerable plants from frost this winter.

Protecting plants from frost I HOPE you enjoyed the beautiful autumn days that we have been having recently. The rain was very welcome. It certainly makes you feel more motivated to get out and enjoy your garden. One thing you have to consider at this time of year is frost damage on young plants so you need to prepare before the frosts arrive. Once the damage is done it is hard for plants to recover. The most damage is done as the sun hits the plants covered in frost. If you don’t mind an early start and are happy to hose off the frost you may be able to save some plants if you didn’t remember to cover them. There are quite a few ways to protect your plants from being burnt by the frost. If the plants are in pots and are easily moved this is the safest and best way to guarantee that your plants will not be affected by the frost. Move them to a location where they are sheltered from frost and cold draughts. Sometimes we get cold enough that it’s the temperature that is too much for the plant, so if you have particu-

Prepare now for a colourful garden in Spring!

larly sensitive plants you need to keep them either in a hothouse, or perhaps inside if you’re able to bring them indoors for the winter. Covering your plants for protection is another good option. Use a product like frost cloth. Cover the plant completely, preferably without it touching the foliage too much. Don’t just cover the top or around the sides because the frost will come across the ground and up, but you also don’t want to leave the top exposed because this will allow the cold air to get into your covering and still impact the plant. It may not look attractive, but neither does a frost burnt plant. There are products on the market that you can spray on plants to help reduce frost damage also. It is not all bad news. Deciduous fruit trees benefit from winter chilling. Frost also helps break the cycle of some pests and diseases, so there are benefits to these frosty mornings as well. Happy gardening.

FEATURE STORY

Panadol and cats don’t mix PANADOL (paracetamol) is a human medication that helps with pain and fever in our bodies. Unfortunately it is metabolised differently in cats and even small amounts can be quite toxic. Panadol should never be given to cats and accidental exposure should be prevented. The main problem with panadol in cats is that the enzyme that usually breaks down the drug is in very limited supply compared to in a human. This leads to an accumulation of a metabolite that limits the blood’s capacity to carry oxygen (methemoglobinemia). Obviously with limited oxygen circulating in the blood we see shortness of breath, reluctance to exercise and weakness. In severe cases death is highly likely due to oxygen shortage. There may also be cyanosis (blueness of the gums) and blood samples take on a characteristic brown appearance.

with Tim Craig BVSc, Veterinarian Liver damage is also possible at higher doses. The toxic dose of panadol may be as low as 50mg for a 5kg dog and panadol tablets tend to be 500mg. As such it is very easy to give a toxic dose to a cat with just one tablet. Treatment can be instigated early with vomiting (however making cats vomit reliably is difficult). Otherwise flushing the stomach under anaesthetic and providing supportive care may be needed. Medications can be used to try and reverse the dysfunction in the red blood cells and help improve their oxygen carrying capacity. Prevention as always is better than cure and panadol toxicity in cats is a difficult problem to correct.

◆ COMMUNITY LEADER: Irene Grant is applying her years of experience in community leadership as part of the OMRP.

Working together for the region Ŷ From page 1 Having built a long standing career in consulting, as well as co-owning Wangaratta Central serviced offices, Susan said she relished being able to put her expertise and passions to work as part of the OMRP. “We’ve got so much happening,” she said, adding that the digital and technological realm is “the job creators of the future,” and “we want to be ahead of the pack.” Susan said that the North East is already embracing the changing role of technology, with the high profile efforts of local school robotics teams, people telecommuting and much more, and added that the region needs to capitalise on that. “There’s a wave of excitement building as to what’s possible,” she said. Susan said she felt compelled to help local communities reach their full potential and being a part of the OMRP helped her do that. “It gives me the ability to connect with other people making

a difference in the region, and take nebulous ideas and make them real,” she said. “I absolutely adore living here and want to build things up for future generations.” Irene Grant, an experienced public servant and community member of many years’ standing, is the chair of the partnership and said she became involved because she “liked the idea of what partnerships could do”. She said the OMRP gives the North East broad regional representation across a number of areas, including tourism, health, education, agriculture, transport, digital connection, business and more. On the eve of the OMRP’s third regional assembly being held this month, Irene said a lot of progress has been made since the group’s inception, and members of local communities had embraced the chance to have their say and put their ideas forward. “I’ve always been passionate

about local leadership,” she said. “That’s where communities can make a difference. “It is important for regions to work actively together, there’s collective strength in that. “And it’s important, as communities change, that we move with these changes.” Irene said as a proud North East resident, she wanted to help communities make the most of our natural resources and landscapes. “If you want things to happen, you’ve got to step up,” she said, urging people to register to attend the upcoming assembly and have their say. “It’s an opportunity for the community to have a voice.” The OMRP is holding its third annual Regional Assembly on Wednesday, June 27 in Wangaratta. More information on the Ovens Murray Regional Partnership, and the upcoming assembly (including a link for registration), is available at engage.vic.gov.au/ ovens-murray.

GONE FISHING

nemedia.com.au

SHOW US YOUR CATCH! CATCH OF THE WEEK ◆ Got a photo and details of a great catch? Email: kwilson@nemedia.com.au.

◆ CRAY-ZEE: This was a first for our columnist Robbie Alexander - an oversize male Murray spiny freshwater crayfish at 130mm from its eye to its tail which was safely returned to the water on cray opening morning last Friday.

SUDOKU PUZZLE 5

Lakes offer winter opportunity

with ROB ALEXANDER, Wangaratta all winter, although finding a large fish can be tough at any stage. Khancoban Pondage can produce some large brown trout during the winter months, but is also known for being quite a hit and miss trout fishery as the water levels fluctuate quite rapidly. Eildon Pondage is the region’s only ‘Premier Lake’ providing great opportunities for anglers of all abilities to catch trout. The pondage has wheel chair access, is stocked quite heavily and quite often and is also stocked with ex-brood trout from nearby Snobs Creek hatchery, so there’s some

truly huge trout in there. If you’re willing to put in the hours, Lake Hume can produce some very big trout during the winter months as well, however do not expect to catch fish every time and do not expect to catch large numbers of fish. Murray cod anglers should head downstream of Lake Mulwala before it closes to all fishing in September. Depending on how much rainfall we get over winter, natural flowing rivers such as the Ovens, King, Buffalo, Kiewa, Mitta Mitta and Cudgewa Creek may also be worth fishing for Murray cod during the winter months, however I suspect the action will be slow. Murray crayfishing season opened on June 1 and closes on august 31. Early reports have been quite good in the Ovens River catchment but I have not had reports from other areas yet. Happy winter everybody, I will catch you all in September.

LAST WEEK’S SOLUTION

WELL this is it for me for a few months. As with the last six to seven years, I am taking the winter months off and will return to my weekly fishing column in Regional Extra in the last week of August, ahead of the reopening of the trout season. This weekend in the last opportunity to fish local rivers and streams for trout, as they close to fishing during trout spawning and re-open on the first weekend in September. Over the next few months the standout fisheries around North East Victoria will most likely be Lake Dartmouth, Lake William Hovell, Khancoban Pondage, Eildon Pondage and Lake Eildon. These lakes usually all fish well for trout during the winter months, when local trout rivers are subject to the closed season – from due to spawning. Dartmouth and William Hovell are the lakes to head to for consistency. Both lakes tend to produce trout

Living with chronic pain and looking after your weak points PAIN comes in many forms. You may experience chronic pain in the form of constant fatigue, arthritis, constant dull aches, nerve pain, sharp acute pain or deep disabling pain. If you have had trauma to your spine from an accident, virus, or wear and tear, it is likely that this pain pattern is contributing to other ongoing health conditions, due to reduced flow of nutrients and nerve supply to certain parts of your body. Pain medications can also effect your sleep, mood and digestion, which can make dealing with the pain much more difficult. Anyone living with chronic pain will know that if affects your mood, energy, sleep and out look on life. Whilst naturopaths cannot completely eradicate your pain, we can

help you identify your weak points, come up with a plan to nurture them and monitor your progress. We can also work with you to improve other aspects of your health that contribute to worsening your pain and pushing you over your pain coping threshold. Chronic pain can also effect Bowels: Bloating, constipation or diarrhea (often a side effect of long term pain killers) Sleep: Pain may be keeping you awake or you may be too tired to sleep (tired and wired) Mood: You may feel anxious or even depressed about your pain and find that you are avoiding activities and social engagements for fear that it will aggravate the pain. Energy: Chronic pain will wear you down either by robbing your

body of nutrients as it fights the pain or by disrupting your sleep. Susceptibility to infections: When you are already run down with pain, even a mild cold can seem like a great assault on your body – sending the pain cascade out of control. Getting on top of infections early can reduce pain flare ups. Craving carbs and sugary foods for energy: The more tired, inflamed and sedentary we are the more we seek out carbs, sugar and stimulants to keep us energized and or happy. If you suffer chronic pain, consider natural medicines as supportive therapy for the above situations either alone or in combination with your current pain medications to reduce side effects.

Morrisons of Glenrowan 2017 Fiano Garganega IF you ever needed an excuse to visit Glenrowan, the Queen’s Birthday weekend is the time to do it when the region’s cellar doors play host to the Trails, Tastings and Tales festival. The boutique event involves four wineries and one brewery which makes it doable in a day for those wanting to eat, drink and be merry without racking up a lot of kilometres, while still getting to enjoy winter in the natural beauty of the Warby wonderland. I recommend starting early and starting hungry so you can make it a five course indulgence and sampling some different wines like Morrisons Italian blend Fiano Garganega, might just be an education. The wine has a really unusual aroma and while there is some familiar peachy fruit, there is also almond, honey and musk-like

with ANITA McPHERSON florals which must be from the Garganega. It has golden colour and medium body with hints of apple, peach and spice on the way to a dry, citrus finish. It would go nicely with the richness of potato rosti or even the minestrone on the festival menu, and at home it would match with my vegetable frittata. GET TOGETHER: Georgia Hamidon (Dal Zotto), Anita Laurence (representing King Valley Art Show), Chas Dale (Pizzini Wines), Darren Vincent (Brown Brothers), and Brianna Munt (King River Brewing) are among those in the King Valley looking forward to an influx of visitors during the upcoming long weekend.

A feast for all the senses in the King Valley THE King Valley is set to come alive this long weekend, with a right royal feast of things to see, taste and do. The well-established tradition of celebrating the Queen’s Birthday weekend with food and wine events continues. This year, wineries operate their own events, without the banner of the previously-run Weekend Fit for a King, adding flexibility to the event program. “We are looking forward to the new format for the weekend’s events, which offers more choice

for visitors - food and wine events for those who want to celebrate, or complimentary tastings for those who just want a taste of the King Valley,” said Alison Lloyd, marketing officer, Wines of the King Valley. Entry is free at Brown Brothers, Chrismont, Darling Estate, Francesco, La Cantina, Sam Miranda and Symphonia cellar doors. Dal Zotto Wines will offer a Little Italy in Whitfield experience (entry $25pp), Pizzini Wines celebrates with Sangiovese e Salsiccie ($15pp) and

Politini Wines will create the King’s Sicilian Festa (entry $10pp). With live music, local markets and children’s activities, there will be a feast for all the senses. The local tourism industry has united under the banner of the King Valley Balloon Festival to provide a visual feast for visitors, in addition to the food and wine events. The King Valley Art Show will exhibit fine works at King River Brewing throughout the weekend, and the micro brewery will also host an opportu-

nity to meet the hot air balloon pilots participating in the festival, over smoked meats and craft beer on Sunday evening. Brown Brothers Night Glow provides the crescendo of the King Valley Balloon Festival, with all participating balloons lighting up in unison to live music on the Milawa Airfield from 4pm Saturday. Further information about the weekend’s activities is available at www.visitkingvalley.com.au, or for more information on the fun to be had throughout the area this long weekend, see inside this feature.

Venture Into The Valleys - Winter 2018- Page 3

A warm welcome at Pizzini Wines PIZZINI Wines’ Sangiovese e Salsicce Food and Wine Festival is celebrating its 15th year. This event began back in 2003 to introduce guests to the finer points of making traditional Italian pork sausages that pair perfectly with the Tuscan red - Sangiovese. Since its first year, the event has grown into a celebration of all things Italian and especially that warm welcome Italian families are so well known for. This year Rinaldo’s Casa Cucina have teamed with the Pizzini family to serve up traditional Italian fare alongside warming winter reds and the usual energetic live entertainment. Once again Maurice Milani, The Rumour and Jo Ellis will get toes tapping and Bric a Brac will rove the crowd playing gypsy jazz classics. Lunch on Sunday at Pizzini is encouraged. Dishes being served include pork belly and crackling, homemade potato gnocchi, lasagne, Italian pork salsicce and osso bucco. Lunch is served from 11.30am. For those wishing to feast on sweet things, Katrina Pizzini will be serving up Nonna’s apple strudel, rich chocolate brownie and plates of homemade biscuits to pair with coffee from Roaming Poppy. Entry to Pizzini Wines on the Saturday and Sunday of the Queen’s Birthday weekend is $15 per person and includes your wine glass and entertainment. For those wishing to visit as a bus group, bookings are essential, call Pizzini on (03) 57298278 to inquire. If you have visitors over the Queen’s Birthday weekend, pack them into the car and take a drive up in to the King Valley hills and come and dine with Pizzini Wines. Just pack a beanie, scarf and puffy jacket for maximum enjoyment. Look to the skies during balloon festival THE King Valley Balloon Festival, one of the newest additions to the region’s tourism calendar, is set to be a hit with locals and visitors alike this Queen’s Birthday weekend. The festival will see a mass of hot air balloons floating over the valley and a night-time balloon party, known as Night Glow, at Brown Brothers. Taking off from Milawa and Whitfield, pilots will take advantage of prevailing winds to guide the balloons over vineyards and between mountain ranges, following the clear, cool King River. The misty mornings of winter are set to make

the vision even more magical. Join members of the local community for an early morning barbecue and watch the takeoffs on Saturday, Sunday or Monday morning, or grab a glass of mulled wine and warming winter foods at Brown Brothers Night Glow on Saturday evening. Morning flights will take off from the Brown Brothers Milawa Airfield, on the eastern side of the Milawa-Bobinawarrah Road (opposite the vineyard), with preparation for morning flights beginning at 6.30am and balloons lifting off from 7am.

Hot drinks and a fundraising barbecue breakfast will be available. If the afternoon is more your speed, head to the Whitfield town centre at 3pm Sunday to check out afternoon launches. The afternoon flights are the perfect opportunity to watch the balloons float over the valley, with a glass of wine in hand at one of the many cellar doors, or food and wine events, on the weekend. WHATEVER your taste in art, there is plenty to see and appreciate at Wangaratta Art Gallery this weekend, with the Petite Miniature Textiles exhibition and Beard and Influence both on show. The newly opened 6th Biennial Petite Miniature Textile exhibition showcases the best small textile artworks from around the nation. This exhibition continues to grow in popularity with artists from around the country participating in this project and displaying contemporary textiles no larger than 30x30x30cm. A diverse array of techniques and themes explore everything from colour, texture, decoration to social, political and environmental issues, propelling textiles into the realm of the visual arts. Throughout the period of the exhibition Wangaratta Art Gallery is excited to accommodate the Petite exhibition with a suite of public programs, from a week of Petite sessions of lost craft which features four days of quick, easy to learn instructed sessions on lost skills such as darning and macramé. The exhibition runs until August 19. Meanwhile, in Gallery 2, Wangaratta Art Gallery is excited to announce a new exhibition of prints by artist Clayton Tremlett, entitled Beard and Influence, which invokes the dictionary definition of the verb to beard - ‘to oppose face to face, set at defiance or to boldly confront or challenge’. Clayton Tremlett’s linocut prints incorporating bushranger self-portraits provoke consideration about convictism, larrikinism, resistance to authority and the emergence of a national identity. Tremlett has introduced local bushranger references and historic collections including reference materials and small objects from the Burke Museum Beechworth. Following this weekend, Clayton Tremlett will deliver a detailed Artist Floor Talk on Sunday June 17 at 10am, and this event will be followed by the Wangaratta Art Gallery Beard Bonanza from 1-3pm, an afternoon of beards, burgers, beer and bluegrass. The exhibition continues until July 8. All events are free and all welcome, and bookings essential, for information call (03) 57220865 or visit www.wangarattaartgallery.com.au.

KING’S

Literature lovers will be inspired in June IF you’re a book lover, don’t forget to head to Wangaratta Lit Fest and Book Fair this weekend. Hosted in Wangaratta’s St Patrick’s Hall, the festival invites lovers of literature to be inspired, and to take part in the weekend’s events. Originating from a Rotary Club initiative last year, the event saw over 40,000 books donated by the local community and nearly $15,000 in funds raised. In 2018, Rotary has signiďŹ cantly expanded the scope of the original Book Fair project to incorporate a Literary Festival. Proceeds from the event will go towards Wangaratta community groups and projects.

Designed as an event to be from the community, to the community, this year’s festival will encompass a competition for young writers, children’s activities, author panels, and a CWA ‘Retro CafĂŠ, combined with the successful pre-loved book fair. Visiting authors at this year’s event include authors A.J (Sandy) Mckinnon and Glenna Thomson who will conduct writing workshops, panel discussions and author talks on the Saturday of the event. Entry to the event is just $2 with no books priced over $5. For further information visit the Wang Lit Fest website at www.wanglitfest.com.au

The EU looks set to break the internet TECH & SCIENCE with Chris Febvre, GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au IF Kim Kardashian’s backside wasn’t enough to break the internet, the EU’s Copyright Directive might just do the trick - only this time it might just stay broken. Under new proposals, to be voted on by members of the European Parliament on June 21, search engines like Google and social media sites like Facebook and Twitter will be forced to pay a controversial ‘link tax’ to news media sites operating within EU member nations. Additionally, a mandate would require internet social service providers to monitor user uploaded content for any copyright infringing material and block said content from being uploaded at all, as well as hold those sites directly liable for any copyright infringements. The Copyright Directive - and articles 11 and 13 specifically - are a bid to drastically revert protections to content creators and organisations to something resembling the pre-internet era. Of course, the protection of intellectual property is extremely important - and fair remuneration

for originator of content equally so - but somebody really should have told the EU that the cat is well and truly out of the bag now, and trying to stuff it back in is only going to result in a very angry cat, severe lacerations, and crippling tetanus. Among the more worrisome aspects of these proposals is that the link tax would be an inalienable right, meaning that media organisations would be forced to collect the fee, whether they want to or not. This could be hugely detrimental to small, independent media organisations who rely on Google and other search engines to drive traffic to their websites. If Google would be forced to pay these small organisations a fee to list their articles in it’s search results, then the likely outcome would be that Google simply won’t list them - at all. But given the fact that the lobbying of these proposals has primarily come from large, European mainstream media conglomerates, that is probably the point of the exercise - to destroy small competitors. The second troubling aspect of this is that content filtering almost certainly can’t be contained to EU nations alone, and would be rolled out globally - affecting countries, organisations, and individuals who have no representatives in the EU, and the proposal ignores fair use and transformative clauses extant in current copyright legislation. In practice this means that the funny cat meme you want to up-

> ◆ COPYRIGHT: Under proposed new directives, posting memes online could constitute a breach of copyright, and bloggers could be smacked with a ‘link tax’ if they refer to sources. load to Instagram could well be blocked by the site’s heavy handed algorithm, as a computer (unsurprisingly) isn’t great at subjective ideas like ‘parody’. All the algorithm would see is a configuration of pixels predetermined to be someone else’s intellectual property. But who could blame Instagram for imposing such catch-all measures given the risks to their business under this new directive? It’s unclear why this unworkable proposal wasn’t abandoned long ago. A similar link tax was rolled out in Spain which resulted in Google News closing shop in the country, an equivalent scheme in Germany has also been deemed a woeful failure, and both small publishers and even a European Commision funded study have slammed the proposal.

The summarised conclusions of the study found that: ƺǝ ċëǝ ļëŜĎëŝǝ ĭÿǝ ÊáÊçëĦĎáǝ ğĎŇëļÊǑ ture on the topic found that there is “nearly universal criticism” of the proposal for a new neighbouring right. ƺǝ ċëǝ ŀŇőçŨǝ źǝħçŀǝ ǘğĎŇŇğëǝ ëŜĎçëħáëǝ that declining newspaper revenues have anything do with the activities of news aggregators or search engines”, who the new law intends to target. The new right may end up stronger than conventional copyright, raising “objections… relating to freedom of expression”. ƺǝ_ĎħĜĎħāǝŝĎğğǝàëǝħëāÊŇĎŜëğŨǝÊÿÿëáŇǑ ed by the proposal: “It seems clear that some hyperlinking will be implicated”. ƺǝ!ŜëħǝĎÿǝŇċëǝħëŝǝļĎāċŇǝçĭëŀǝğëÊçǝ to extra revenues for publishers, “they will be a drop in the ocean” – at the cost of posing “a threat to the nature of news communication”

as well as “to innovation and new entry”. ƺǝ ċëǝ ŀŇőçŨǛŀǝ ÊőŇċĭļŀǝ ļëÊáċǝ Ňċëǝ conclusion that the extra copyright for news sites is incapable of achieving the Commission’s stated goal of promoting media pluralism and is an ill-fitted and disproportionate tool for facilitating the licensing and enforcement of rights by publishers. As one unnamed German editor-in-chief interviewed in the study succinctly put it, “If one is of the opinion that Google has a monopoly, then this should be tackled via the relevant existing laws. “To argue that one must change the architecture of the Internet to tackle this is like saying that we drain the sea to fight pirates. “Overall, the interest of the society are more important than the interests of the publishers”.

Niche British comedy hits all the right notes Channel Chat SHOW: The Mighty Boosh CHANNEL: ABC Comedy TIME: Weeknights with FREYJA POSTLETHWAITE NOW, much of what you’re about to read may seem hyperbolic – but I promise you, when I say there is not a single program ever produced that is quite as good as The Mighty Boosh, I mean it. I fell in love with Noel Fielding’s legendary dry wit after I saw him as a team captain on Never Mind the Buzzcocks, but honestly, that was only the start. A copy of the series was gifted to me by my mother – who I thank every day for the magic it injected into my life.

◆ CRIMPING: Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding star as Howard Moon and Vince Noir respectively in the irreverent British comedy. The Mighty Boosh follows the kooky adventures of fashion icon and actual beam of sunlight, Vince Noir (Noel Fielding) and eternally awkward jazz and stationery enthusiast, Howard Moon (Julian Barratt). Their journeys are often enhanced (for the viewer, anyway) by friends Naboo, a shaman, and Bollo, an actual gorilla, Bollo, their foe, the distinctly creepy Bob Fossil, and countless

other whimsical characters. Even the moon makes regular appearances, it doesn’t add anything to the story but honestly it’s my favourite character. Other iconic British comedians including Matt Berry, Richard Ayoade and Simon Farnaby have regular appearances. While the basis of Vince and Howard’s adventures changes throughout the series – as zoo keepers in season one, wannabe musicians in season two and shop keepers in season three – the laughs never stop. A catchy song number or two is included in every single episode, so prepare to be singing the stupidest of lyrics after you watch. I’ve honestly never laughed harder than watching this show, particularly the Old Gregg and Yeti episodes. Some have a strange and dark tone, but are hilarious nonetheless. Boosh certainly forces you to challenge your accepted understanding of what comedy is, but I promise you’ll enjoy every second of it.

THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS: Archer (ABC Comedy, weeknights, late): Watching the hilarious misadventures of members of an intelligence agency is much more entertaining than it sounds. Stories From Norway: The Musical! (SBS Viceland, Wednesdays, 8.30pm): From Ylvis, the people who burned the question ‘what does the fox say?’ into all of our brains, comes this incredible musical comedy that explores events from recent Norwegian history. Parks and Recreation (ABC Comedy, weeknights, late): Follow the lives of employees of Pawnee, Indiana’s Parks and Recreation department to laugh the hardest you ever will.
