Merriwa Magpie to take flight

AFTER five years as team manager of the WFNC Merriwa Magpies All Abilities Football team, Ros Taylor is about to say goodbye. Prior to coming to Wangaratta, Ros worked at the AFL, but found retirement hard - missing her job, friends and footy. Luckily, a neighbour mentioned her to (then) president of the WFNC, Col McClounan, who asked if Ros would come and help out. She said yes and started looking after their membership, working on the gate at home games, joining the board and anything else the club asked her to do. Ros has also helped out in the art

room of the Wangaratta District Specialist School and a lot of the team members attend or used to attend the school. “I’m moving to Gippsland to be closer to my son and grandchildren but I hope someone will step up and take over what I’ve started because this team is worth it,” she said. “I’m looking forward to being closer to my family but will miss my team and all the special people I have made wonderful friendships with.” When Ros took over as team manager of the All Abilities team, the players were wearing hand-me-down jumpers.

Got a new puppy? Socialise! WHEN getting a new puppy there are many things you need to consider to keep them happy, and healthy, as they grow into adult dogs. This includes the very important time in your new puppy’s development, known as the ‘socialisation period’. So what is it? The ‘socialisation period’ is a critical time that occurs in the puppy’s life between the ages of three and 14 weeks. This period is the time where puppies form social relationships and form both good and bad associations. Hence what occurs during the socialisation period has long lasting effects and can be the beginning of many future problems. It is important that during the socialisation period you expose your puppy to lots of new experiences. These experiences must be positive for the puppy, rewarding and nonthreatening. Through this the puppy will develop positive associations. Enrolling in a puppy class is a fantastic way for your puppy to be exposed to these positive experiences and can be a fun learning experience for owners.

with Joanne Williams, Veterinarian As well as puppy classes, remember to introduce your puppy to family and friends and any of their pets too. However, while your puppy is still getting their initial vaccinations, they should only socialise with other dogs that are up to date with their vaccinations. For a good online resource for introducing your puppy to the family, including some videos, visit www.thefamilydog.com As your puppy begins to make friends, be careful not to inadvertently expose your puppy to a negative socialisation experience. An example of this might be forcing your puppy to play and interact with another dog/person that is clearly causing your puppy distress, this can be counter-productive. So get out there in to the big wide world and have fun with your puppy. Contact your local vet for more information about enrolling in their ďŹ rst ever puppy class.

PET CORNER THE folk group consisted of Peter, Paul and Mary, but now it’s Mary and Eve. These two are the best of friends and would love to go to a home which can accommodate them both. Wangaratta RSPCA has many lovable creatures waiting for the perfect family to take them home. â—† NEW NAME: Banksia praemorsa or Dryandra praemorsa recently became Banksia undata syn. Dryandra praemorsa.

Changing the family name

NAMING of plants is governed by a set of internationally agreed rules. Sometimes a name to which we have become accustomed breaks the rules and is changed to conform to these rules. The species Dryandra has recently changed its family name. DNA analysis has revealed that all the 100 or so species of Dryandra are not actually a separate species after all, and have thus been subsumed within the species Banksia with consequent name changes. What was named Dryandra praemorsa is now Banksia undata syn. Dryandra praemorsa. Many simply changed their genus name to Banksia and retained the species name. For example Dryandra nobilis was re-named Banksia nobilis - but the name change brought complications as there was already a species Banksia praemorsa, so Dryandra praemorsa has become Banksia undata syn. Dryandra praemorsa*. Dryandra species were ďŹ rst described by Robert Brown in 1810 and they occur naturally in the southwest of Western Australia. B. undata owers have been a favourite of the cutower trade for many years. As regulations have tightened to avoid over-harvesting and to halt the spread of Phytophthora die-

back through human activity, commercial plantations are now well-established. B. undata is well worth growing as a feature garden plant. In spring, bright lemon-gold blooms burst out in clusters at the ends of the branches. Leaves are stiff, dark green with a lighter underside, and slightly prickly and there is also a rare pink-owering form. B. undata is fast-growing. Self-seeded plants in our garden owered in their second year. To grow from seed, no pre-treatment before sowing is necessary. Seed can be easily collected from the open capsules of garden plants as soon as they are ripe or purchased from specialist seed merchants. Plant in seed-raising mix and cover lightly. Keep moist but do no over-water. Germination may be erratic. Be patient. Prick out at the two-leaf stage into potting soil and plant out when well-developed. B. undata requires a well-drained soil in full or part-sun. No additional fertiliser is required. Harvesting the owers is an ideal way to maintain bushiness and a pleasing shape. For more information about why plant names are changed see https://orabase.dpaw.wa.gov.au - articles - dryandra-banksia.

avour, with hints of quince, maybe peach and citrus. But it’s also about the weight and almost velvety texture which is kind of rich and coats your mouth in a pleasant way, enhancing those lengthy avours. I’d recommend having it not over chilled with something simple like a few good cheeses, as the different avours and textures will complement each other nicely. Better stop, breathe and write that one down.

Addressing anxiety in children ANXIETY in children is becoming increasingly common in our community, but it is not normal. There are things you can do to change some of these anxious behaviours and patterns. In our experience in clinic, and with our own children, we ďŹ nd herbs and ower essences/homeopathic remedies are extremely effective. Often it is not a one size ďŹ ts all approach with children and we ďŹ nd that naturopathic care alongside kinesiology or counselling works amazingly. It is lovely to watch children ourish in front of our eyes. We look forward to helping you and your child today in our clinic. Naturopath Sophie and Belinda’s top tips: 1. Reduce screen time and get outdoors. There is no doubt-

NOTICE OF SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING OF LEVY PAYERS

ing it - kids are spending way too much time on screens. This includes TV, phones, iPads, Playstation and computers. 2. Find out what their triggers are. Does their anxiety get worse when they are tired, anticipating an event or situation? Talk with an expert like your naturopath to discover strategies of how to improve their reactions and symptoms. 3. Food: keep it simple. Kids do not need soft drinks, juice, cakes, pastries or lollies and especially not in adult size portions. Include protein (eg; animal or tofu or legumes) with plenty of greens, salads, vegetables, smoothies and soups. 4. Allow wind down time: quiet time, soft music, baths and meditations are all beneďŹ cial in anxious kids. 5. Seek help from professionals who can guide and work with you and your family. You are not alone, we are here to help.

WHEN you lead a busy life which involves a fairly regular routine, you can often ďŹ nd yourself simply going through the motions. It frightens me the number of times I’ve been driving in the car and cannot remember leaving the house, let alone turning anything off or even shutting the door. Unless I make an effort to be mindful, it’s like being on automatic pilot - having conversations running in the brain while the body performs its perfunctory tasks. It’s a little dangerous, but I’d say it verges on criminal to do it while eating or drinking, when you should be savouring the avours in the fabulous produce available to us. While there are some wines which could easily be quaffed without noticing, Rutherglen Estates Shelley’s Block Marsanne Viognier Roussanne is one to really pay attention to. The golden coloured blend is named after one of the region’s ďŹ rst vigneron families, the Shelley family’s original 1880’s vineyard site providing the three grape varieties. It’s worth concentrating on the oral and honey-nougat aroma before dipping into the fruity

Merriwa Magpie to take flight Ŷ

From page 1

“When Merriwa came on board as a sponsor we were able to purchase our own jumpers and have our own identity, they also purchased hoodies for the kids. “The board of the O & M Football League, along with general manager Sean Barrett and operations officer Greg Dawson, have also been very supportive, sponsoring my team with shorts and socks. “Looking and feeling like a team makes a great difference to how those young people look and feel.” The Merriwa Magpies are part of The Northern Conference of the Football Integration Development Association (FIDA) AFLVic All Abilities Football competition

and compete against the Wodonga Jets, Echuca Rockets, GV All Stars Shepparton and the Bendigo Suns. To be eligible to play, male or female players must be between the ages of 14 and 40, with a physical or mental health issue. They need to have attended or be attending a special school, a mainstream school with an aide or be on a disability pension. Parents or carers of children under 14 can give written permission for their child to play and players over 40 can submit a doctor’s letter stating they are fit to play, with both then sent to AFL Victoria to accept the request. “Male players (only) also have the opportunity to try out

for the Victoria Country side,” said Ros. “The 16 players chosen will then get to go to a national carnival and play against Vic Metro and all the other states.” Ros has worked hard to fundraise and secure sponsorship to remove the cost burden to the families involved while still giving the young people the opportunity to participate in local and national competitions. “My goal has always been to give these special young people opportunities they would otherwise not have, to take away the burden to families of costs that would otherwise be prohibitive,” she said. “I want to help their health in body and mind and to be good community citizens.

“I want them to know that they don’t have to be on welfare - between the (Wangaratta District Specialist) school, the footy team and Merriwa, there are job opportunities for those that are capable, and for those who are not, they can still be part of a team in a safe and caring environment.” Whoever steps into the role will not have to go it alone with Merriwa remaining the major sponsor, WFNC helping with the team and key personnel Bob Murray (former St Kilda VFL 1966 premiership player and current Merriwa Magpies coach), John Mullins (team mentor), Mal Moncrieff and Marg Sessions all remaining involved. “Mal drives his grandson and some other Benalla boys

to training each week, helps to make sure our jumpers are returned after games and runs water to players during games,” said Ros. “Marg also runs out the water and helps me when she can. “Until I can find someone willing to take on what I do, I

will still be involved with administration remotely.” There are currently 20 players but new team members are welcome, even if they just want to train with the club. “All we ask is that they commit to the team, be respectful to all, respect the jumper and each other.”

situated on Earth and propelled into space by the photons from the laser hitting a light sail attached to the craft. That’s right, rather than being propelled by any sort of fuel onboard the craft, it would instead be shot into space - quite literally - by a laser. But in order for it to work, the sail must be reective. It will also have to be very thin (perhaps just a few atoms across) and lightweight, less than a gram. Thus far, engineers have looked at graphene, which is not reective, which means it would need a coating of some sort On the other hand, reective materials such as metals are too heavy - which presents a catch 22 conundrum. A suitable material has not yet been found, the team has reported. Another challenge the team will face is how to keep multiple laser beams steady and focused as they pass through the Earth’s atmosphere. That will likely mean use of low near-infrared beams, which means the sail would have to be able to reect such wavelengths of light. But then issues of weight and heat generation come into play. Such issues, the team notes, mean that engineers will have to balance many factors to ďŹ nd just the right combination of materials. Something else the team will have to consider is the shape of the sail—it will not likely be a simple at sheet, because imperfections on its surface would send the craft careening off into space. Instead, engineers will have to develop a design that allows for self-correction.

OVER the years, science ďŹ ction has proposed a lot of crazy ideas concerning interstellar travel. From hyperspace to warp speed, wormholes to tardises - all wonderful ideas that ďŹ ll our collective imagination with daydreams of exploring distant planets, meeting aliens (hopefully not the facehugging kind), and perhaps even swinging around a lightsaber or two. We’ve got our hurdles to get over if we ever want to travel around the galaxy and start building communities on distant planets - and that’s putting it mildly. That whole business about not being able to travel faster than the speed of light is a real buzz kill. Still, scientists leading Breakthrough Starshot - a project aiming to send space probes to planets beyond our solar system - are tackling some of those initial hurdles. In 2017 they launched the smallest spacecraft ever - miniature satellites which were just 3.5cm x 3.5cm and carried radios, sensors and computers - with each device powered by sunlight and weighing just four grams. The team are hoping to launch these micro craft - known as Sprites - toward the Alpha Centauri system by the middle of this century, and they recently outlined the problems they need to overcome to make such a journey possible. To reach Alpha Centauri in a reasonable amount of time, the craft will need to travel very fast, close to 20 percent of the speed of light. Alpha Centauri is, after all, 4.37 light years away. The design presents serious challenges, as the team highlights. The craft would be powered by a laser array
