Getting back on his bike

By BELINDA HARRISON

◆ READY TO RIDE: Izaak Raaijmakers will continue his ride from the end of July, all going well.

ALMOST one year ago, 19 year old Sydney-sider Izaak Raaijmakers (pronounced Is-ark Rye-markers) decided he would set off on a ride around Australia to raise money for Type 1 Diabetes. Izaak’s 11 year old sister, Adela, had been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when she was seven years old so he was quite familiar with the treatments and struggles. Izaak completed his HSC last year and decided he would take a gap year in 2021, and that his ride would take up a good portion of it. “I wanted to get out and see what was out there,” he said. “I wanted something that would get me out of my comfort zone while doing something worthwhile.” Izaak’s goal was to raise $1 for every kilometre he intended to ride - which equated to $15,000 - and by the time he found himself in Wangaratta in April 2021, he was only $2000 shy. His time in the North East will be particularly memorable; for good and bad reasons. Having left Sydney on March 19, Izaak travelled to Kiama in NSW, then inland to Canberra, through Gundagai and Tumut before turning towards Falls Creek and arriving in the King Valley. He had completed around 1250km by that stage and on April 4, found himself in the picturesque valleys and hills of Whitfield. “I had ridden about 145kms that day, which was the longest I’d ever ridden at one time,” Izaak said. “I was pretty tired and hadn’t really eaten or had enough to drink and I had decided on a different route to my original plan so there were a whole heap of things that contributed to what happened next.” What happened was that Izaak nicked a rock, was thrown from his bike (over the handlebars) and blacked out before hitting the ground. He woke up on his chest with his left elbow fractured/ dislocated so badly that it was twisted 5-10cm in the wrong direction. “I think he lost concentration for just a moment,” Izaak’s mother, Emma said. “I felt that he had been riding too many kilometres each day, but he’s young and was feeling good so while his body was coping well, his mind might have been too tired and he missed the warning signs.” “I was really very lucky; I was wearing a helmet and I had no damage to my neck,” Izaak added.

Rat bait ingestion RAT bait is a fatal toxin to dogs and cats and unfortunately there are no pet-safe rat bait products available in Australia. The main types of rat bait available in Australia are anti-coagulants which kill rats and mice by blocking their ability to clot their blood and consequently bleeding out. The same thing will happen to dogs and cats and this is why it is so deadly. When an animal ingests rat bait it will start to deplete the animal’s vitamin K levels in the body, vitamin K is an essential part of clotting the blood so without this an animal cannot clot its blood. Animals do store vitamin K in their body and have roughly a three to four day store of this, therefore clinical signs of rat bait toxicity will not become apparent until four to five days later and will initially be very vague clinical signs. Clinical signs of rat bait ingestion include but are not limited to lethargy, vomiting, pale gums, inappetence, coughing, trouble breathing or bleeding excessively from small wounds. By the time pale gums are noticed the animal will have very little red blood cells left in the body and this is an emergency that requires treatment as soon as possible.

with Ovens & Kiewa Veterinary Hospital Rat bait ingestion can be diagnosed three to four days after ingestion by testing the blood’s ability to clot. The good thing about rat bait is that it is treatable if it is caught early, treatment includes replacing vitamin K by supplementing this in the form of tablets and injections. This therapy is required for four to six weeks to allow the toxin to stop working and the blood to clot normally. If the toxin is severe and there is a large amount of blood loss the animal may require a blood transfusion as well as vitamin K therapy. The best treatment for rat bait ingestion if it has been known to be ingested is to induce vomiting and get as much of the bait out of the body, there are also other therapies that can be used to bind toxins in the body and remove them if it is known early that it has been ingested. If you see your animal ingest rat bait or if you suspect your animal may have eaten rat bait and is showing signs of being unwell visit your vet immediately.

Banksia ‘Giant Candles ‘ a happy union WHEN two plants of a closely related genus originating from different areas are brought together in a garden, a chance hybrid seedling with desirable attributes may be the happy result of cross-fertilisation. Banksia ‘Giant Candles’ is a chance hybrid of Banksia spinulosa and Banksia ericifolia. It originated in a Brisbane garden. B. spinulosa naturally occurs in open forest and woodland on coastal plains and adjacent ranges in QLD, NSW and Victoria. There are a number of forms ranging from multistemmed shrubs to small trees. Banksia ericifolia was named by Carl Linnaeus. The type specimen was collected by Joseph Banks in 1770 at Botany Bay. The name refers to the leaves which are reminiscent of the European Erica genus. There are two distinct subspecies.

Banksia is an iconic yet complex Australian genus. The flower heads consist of hundreds of tiny individual flowers grouped together in pairs on a woody cone (as illustrated). The seeds are individually encased in a hard covering and remain attached to the woody cone. They may remain mature yet unopened for years. They will open to release winged seeds following a bushfire or the application of extreme heat. Until recently, there were 78 known species of Banksia. In Western Australia, 62 species occur with the other 16 species in the Eastern States. The most recent discovery of a previously unknown species was B. rosserae in the year 2000. It occurs in a small population near Mt. Magnet, WA. With the recent reclassification decision based on DNA evidence to

include all Dryandra species in the Banksia genus, there are officially now approximately 200 Banksia species. Many banksias (in the former classification) are long-lived and re-sprout from a lignotuber after fire. They are usually grown from seed for the nursery trade. Hybrid species such a B. ‘Giant Candles’ are grown from cuttings, which strike readily. Plants grown from seed will not necessarily come true to type. ‘Giant Candles’ tolerates a range of soil types, providing drainage is adequate. It is frost hardy to minus six degrees celcius. It is a tall-growing shrub, suitable for the larger garden and requires full sun to part shade. Alternatives for smaller spaces such as rockeries or tubs are B. ‘Birthday Candles’ and B. ‘Cherry Candles’. Both are dwarf forms of B. spinulosa.

Campbells of Rutherglen 2019 Chardonnay THERE is a reality television series which follows the adventures of families who have upped sticks from Britain and moved into historic chateaus they have purchased in France. So many of these extravagant, large scale historic buildings appear to have fallen into disrepair, so much so that they appear to be available for what seems like bargain prices. The catch appears to be that they can be money pits; requiring extensive upkeep and costing eye-watering sums to run, so need to operate as businesses to make them viable. But the attraction of the French lifestyle is so appealing - the climate, culture, beautiful food and wine and chance to live like a queen - it seems to make the financial risk and hard graft worthwhile. The thought of preserving something for future generations is also quite special. I’m enjoying the journey with a glass of Campbells of Rutherglen Chardonnay. It has historic pedigree, the vineyards, planted in 1870 by the family’s great grandfather, John Campbell. It has a golden colour and aromas of stone and citrus fruits like nectarine and a hint of grapefruit.

with Anita McPherson

It’s crisp and dry, but then also a little nutty and creamy, balanced with spice from French oak. It benefits from being served only lightly chilled so you can enjoy the lovely length of flavour, the creaminess becoming more pronounced. Enjoy it with a little soft cheese and feel like a Francophile, albeit with great Australian culture, heritage and style. About $25.

This Day in History, 1882 OTTO Martin, the Wangaratta plumber, was injured in a gun accident. He was trying to force a cartridge from a breech loading gun, when the gun went off. The shot went through the floor of his shop and the cartridge struck him in the eye. He was not seriously injured.

Ross river fever and glandular fever ROSS River fever and glandular fever are both very debilitating health conditions that in susceptible people can turn into chronic fatigue. This year we have seen a rise in these viruses. At the clinic, we find that patients come in after they have been sick for many weeks, wanting some relief from the tiredness, body aches and swollen glands. Naturopaths have many tools to help manage these viruses and ease the symptoms. As naturopaths, we work with the body to strengthen the immune system so it has enough energy to keep fighting the infection, repair the damage to

muscles and cells caused by the virus, reduce swelling in the liver and improve appetite. We focus primarily on tonics and diet plans that promote convalescence and the doctor’s recommendation of continued rest. Herbs, nutrients and diet and lifestyle modifications in these situations are invaluable. Symptoms of these viruses include: * Flu-like symptoms that include fever, chills, headache and aches and pains in the muscles and joints; * Some joints can become swollen and joint stiffness may be particularly noticeable in the morning; * Sometimes a rash occurs on the

body, arms or legs - the rash usually disappears after seven to 10 days; * A general feeling of being unwell, tired or weak may also occur at times during the illness. The majority of people recover completely in a few weeks. Others may experience symptoms such as joint pain and tiredness for many months. These lingering symptoms can turn into chronic debilitating symptoms such as fatigue, chronic immune system issues and inflammation. So why wait until you are struggling to recover? Why not seek help from naturopaths who can help you today?

Getting back on his bike Ŷ

From page 1

“I was also lucky that there were no cars around when I came off. “Surprising, the only damage to my bike was that the front wheel was out of alignment, but there’s one strange thing that I just can’t explain - I was riding downhill when I came off but when I woke up, my bike was facing uphill, and it was upright.” Local dairy farmers Robert and Pat Cook were driving up a hill on their property and saw Izaak sitting on the side of the road. Izaak was conscious again by that stage and was on the phone to the ambulance when they, and a number of their employees, arrived to see if he was alright. “They were so lovely as were the other people who drove past and got out to help before the ambulance arrived,” Izaak said. “Mr and Mrs Cook took good care of me as did the paramedics and the staff at Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW) when I got there.” “I had never been to ‘Wang’ as I now

know it’s called,” Emma said. “But Izaak was given such good care and the people there are just lovely. “Funnily enough, I was speaking to a local dad up here in Sydney after Izaak had come off his bike and he mentioned that he was originally from Wangaratta he used to be a paperboy and said it was often freezing at 4-5am on his bike route,” Emma laughed. “He was actually Izaak’s first sponsor for the ride too.” Izaak only spent two days in hospital in Wangaratta and it wasn’t where he thought he’d be spending his 19th birthday. “About 20 minutes before my accident I had met another cyclist who was riding part of the same section I was. “He had stopped and I have since wondered if I’d rested with him before going on, if things would have turned out differently, but I was in a rush to keep going.” Izaak returned to Sydney to recuperate and has worked diligently to ensure that

he suffers no long-term effects. “I got the all clear from my doctor in late June that everything is healing well and I don’t have to have surgery which is really good,” Izaak said. “I’m hoping to be back on the bike at the end of July and although I thought I would continue on where I fell off, I have decided to go north so that I get through the Northern Territory before the wet season. “I will probably change my route a bit too and do more riding inland where it’s less busy than on coast roads and I hope to be back in the Wangaratta area in about six months’ time.” If anyone wants to join Izaak along sections of his ride in the North East or elsewhere, you can contact him via his Instagram page @izaakraaijmakers. He will also use his Instagram to share where he is, how the ride is going and how donations can be made. National Diabetes Week runs from July 11 to 17, 2021.

ATO tax return tips CPA Australia’s top tip for employees this tax time is “Don’t poke the bear”. Australia’s leading professional accounting body says a sure-fire way to do this is to omit income from your tax return. Senior manager tax policy Elinor Kasapidis said most transactions where money changes hands leave a digital footprint and the ATO has even greater information gathering powers than the police. “If you’re thinking of playing hide and seek with the ATO, don’t expect them to close their eyes and count to 10,” Ms Kasapidis said. “Assume they have full line of sight on your income and don’t poke the bear.” Other than accountants, Ms Kasapidis agreed that most

people don’t find doing tax fun but she said it’s worth reminding ourselves of the value of paying taxes and what we receive in return. “People sometimes forget that paying tax is a good thing,” she said. “The past 18 months is a great reminder of why we do it. “The economic stimulus that kept millions of Australians and small businesses afloat during the pandemic is being paid for with our taxes.” Each year CPA Australia publishes tax tips for different categories of taxpayers and this week published its tax tips for employees. “It’s legal to maximise your tax refund and that’s what we’re trying to help people do,” Ms Kasapidis said. “It’s not legal to avoid pay-

ing tax, so we’re also trying to help people avoid breaking the law.” According to Ms Kasapidis, Australia has one of the most complex tax systems in the world, but for most employees it boils down to a few simple principles: 1. If you earned money, you need to report it. 2. If you can’t prove an expense, you can’t claim it. 3. If you want to make sure you’ve got it right, see a tax agent. “Employees’ starting positions should be, if you earned money, you need to report it,” she said. “Then claim your deductions and pay tax on the difference. “Claiming deductions for work expenses is the single

biggest area where people go wrong; both by claiming too much or not enough. “The way the tax system works, if you don’t claim a deduction, you won’t get it. “Plenty of people miss out because they didn’t know to ask. “Don’t copy and paste last year’s deductions into this year’s return; it’s another surefire way to poke the bear. “You can cut your own hair, but you’ll get a better result if you see a professional. “It’s the same with completing your tax return. “If you see a tax agent, you can be confident you’re paying the right amount of tax and getting the maximum refund you’re entitled to.” CPA Australia has around 6000 registered tax agents.

◆ COLD AND WET: Lady Bath Falls at Mt Buffalo received 115mm of rain in just 24 hours two weeks ago and the rainy conditions have keep temperatures higher and have limited snowfall. PHOTO: Parks Victoria

Still patchy in areas but plenty to see and do FALLS Creek has eight lifts running with an average natural snow depth of 12cm and a snow making depth of 25cm. Wombat’s Ramble has marginal snow covered areas but Panorama Park is open for snow play. For XC skiers, there is good, groomed snow on the Eagle Rock to McKay Loop and the Cattle Grid to Stockyard Loop tails. Nordic Bowl trail is open but has only patchy snow, all other trails are closed. Snow chains must be carried and fitted when directed. Mt Hotham has around 28cm of natural snow with four lifts turning each day. Snow making has been in operation with an approximate depth of 37 cm. All 16 XC trails are open and the Basin Terrain Park is also now open. The snow at Mt Buffalo is still patchy this week. There is no tobogganing at Dingo Dell or Cresta Valley at the moment and XC trails have poor snow coverage. Chains must be carried and fitted where directed by signage or by staff members.

With snow falls at Mt Buller over the weekend, there is fair snow on Bourke Street with two lifts in operation. There is still no snow in the toboggan and snow play parks at Horse Hill and Village and XC trails are still patchy. There are limited lift tickets and ski and snowboard school lessons so book online to secure your preferred dates. Chains are required to be carried for all 2WD and overnight vehicles.

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ YOU DIRTY RAT: It’s ironic, but the much maligned rat - considered dirty, disease carriers - have been essential to medical research for 150 years.

Rats and medicine WHEN most people think of rats, they conjure up thoughts of dirty, diseased, nasty, hairy little vermin that scurry about and give people frights. Society’s propensity for feelings of disgust toward largely stem from centuries ago, when the black plague swept across Europe. And the recent plague of rodents in New South Wales haven’t helped to endear people these furry creatures. But as with all things, there’s a whole other side to rats that many people are unaware of. Mice and rats are critical to medical science and experimentation It’s no accident that rodent species make up 95 percent of lab animals. From formulating new cancer drugs to testing dietary supplements, rats play a critical role in developing new medical wonders. Scientists and researchers rely on mice and rats for several reasons. One is convenience - rodents are small, easily housed and maintained, and adapt well to new surroundings. They also reproduce quickly and

North East

have a short lifespan of two to three years, so several generations of mice can be observed in a relatively short period of time. Another reason rodents are used as models in medical testing is that their genetic, biological and behaviour characteristics closely resemble those of humans, and many symptoms of human conditions can be replicated in mice and rats. “Rats and mice are mammals that share many processes with humans and are appropriate for use to answer many research questions,” Jenny Haliski, a representative for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare tol the online blog Live Science. Rats are also highly social animals Rats take care of injured and sick members in their group, and without companionship they tend to become lonely and depressed. Rats even make laughter sounds when they play, and pet rats love being handled by humans.

When they are happy, rats have been observed to chatter or grind their teeth. This is often accompanied by vibrating eyes. Rats even succumb to peer-pressure, just like humans. Brown rats are prone to disregard personal experiences in order to copy the behaviour of their peers. The urge to conform is so strong that they will even choose to eat unpalatable food if they are in the company of other rats who are eating it. Rats are extremely clean animals Rats spend several hours every day grooming themselves and their group members and domesticated rats are less likely than cats or dogs to catch and transmit parasites and viruses. More interesting facts about rats A rat can go longer than a camel without having a drink of water. Rats’ tails help them to balance, communicate and regulate their body temperature, due to the fact that their bodies are unable to sweat like other animals.
