By KYLIE WILSON SOME of ecologist Richard Loyn’s earliest memories from his childhood in suburban Cardiff, Wales, involve him looking to the sky and seeing or hearing flocks of migrating birds from faraway places such as Iceland. “My parents always encouraged me,” he said of his early interest in the natural world. “We always had books on birds, mammals and plants at home.” As a boy Richard could often be found in the backyard of the family home, looking out for what birds or other animals he could see, or walking in the nearby woods and hills. “I found it fascinating to see how much bigger and wider a world there was out there,” he said. “I’ve always seen birds as a window to the wider world.” Richard has lived with wife Debbie Tully near Beechworth, in a property overlooking the Murmungee Basin, for around five years. He has worked on a number of ecological projects over the years, but now runs his own business, Eco Insights, that has seen him work on projects both in Australia and overseas. He arrived in Australia at age 21 in the 1970s, and spent many years working at the Victorian Government’s Arthur Rylah Institute in Heidelberg, where some of his most rewarding projects have involved issues such as the management of wetlands, forests, fire, threatened species, duck hunting and more.

Bumblefoot in birds and rabbits BUMBLEFOOT is a bacterial infection and inammatory reaction on the feet of birds, rodents, and rabbits. Ulcerative pododermatitis is referred to as “sore hocksâ€? when it affects a rabbit and “bumblefootâ€? when it affects a bird. Bumblefoot is basically an infection caused by the staphylococcus bacteria which enters the chicken’s system through a cut, scratch, injury or a chafed and irritated area on its foot. The infection creates an abscess full of pus. It affects all species of poultry and occurs worldwide. Usually the ďŹ rst sign that anything is wrong is when you notice your bird limping or keeping her weight off one leg, or just sitting for long periods of time. You will need to inspect the hen’s foot in order to determine what is going on. Limping can be caused by an awkward landing, lameness or other injury to the leg or foot. On closer inspection you may see some redness or swelling of the foot in the ďŹ rst stages of infection and it

may feel hot to the touch. The cardinal sign of a black scab, usually on the sole of the foot usually appears later when the infection is well established. Treatment is needed – left untreated it will cause the bird pain and suffering and may result in death. As soon as you notice your chicken in discomfort, please seek veterinary advice as prognosis will improve if treated early. Severe cases of bumblefoot can cause a bone infection (osteomyelitis) which can be very painful and difďŹ cult to treat effectively. Gum trees with silver-grey foliage GUM trees - eucalypts are undeniably Australian. They occur east of ‘Wallace’s Line’; a map demarcation running TPVUI GSPN UIF OPSUIFSO 1IJMJQ pines, through Indonesia and West of Australia. About 900 different species have been identiďŹ ed. 1BMBFPOUPMPHJTUT IBWF JEFOUJm FE fossils of owers, fruits and leaves dating back 52 million years. They are true survivors! There is no ‘typical’ gum tree. They vary in their bark, leaf and bud shape, ower colour and size and growth rate. Eucalyptus regnans [Mountain Ash] from the cool temperate mountainous regions of southeastern Australia is the tallest owering plant in the world. It can reach over 100 metres. By contrast, from Tasmania, E. vernicosa, [Varnished Gum] is a diminutive prostrate shrub. The wide range of gum trees suitable for garden planting provides a broad palette for the more

adventurous home gardener. Some eucalypts, particularly smaller ones from arid regions, permanently retain waxy, silver-grey, broad-surfaced juvenile leaves. This bright foliage contrasts dramatically with the varied greens of adjacent plantings. E. macrocarpa [Mottlecah] from South-west Western Australia is a sprawling shrub, reaching between one and ďŹ ve metres. It has stunning silvery-grey foliage, and large bright pink single owers. E. pleurocarpa [Tallerack] also retains silver-grey juvenile foliage. It is a spreading mallee to about four metres high.

It has white owers, and the four-sided seed capsules are an added feature. It makes a useful backdrop to other plantings and responds rapidly with new growth after coppicing. Eucalypts with a lignotuber are collectively known as mallees. Mallees have a marvelous capacity to withstand dryness and to regenerate after ďŹ re. In the home garden this regenerative capacity can be exploited by coppicing to encourage bushy, juvenile growth from the lignotuber. A further bonus – eucalypt leaves have oil glands that emit distinctive and pleasant aromas: some peppermint, others lemony, yet others emit a distinctive ‘traditional’ eucalyptus smell. Eucalypts establish well if planted in late winter. For foliage contrast, form and bushland scent, now is the time to plant a distinctive Australian in your garden.

All Saints Estate 2018 Pinot Grigio THERE is no doubt wine and art go hand in hand, whether it be in the form of exhibitions at a cellar door, a bit of Shakespeare in the vines or some opera in the alps. It’s no wonder concerts like a Day on the Green are so popular, when you can enjoy a glass or two while grooving to some great live music. But to hear that a superstar like Elton John will be visiting Rutherglen in January next year as part of his very last tour is still kind of hard to believe. It’s fun to imagine Sir Elton cruising up the Hume Highway like everyone else, refuelling at Glenrowan before heading out to do a little wine tasting, sampling some local cheeses and hitting the brewery trail. While the great man himself may no longer indulge, hopefully his entourage will at least get to try the range

with Anita McPherson at All Saints while they’re there. I thought about it while opening a bottle of Pinot Grigio which had been chilling in the fridge. This refreshing white wine has a gentle bouquet of peach and ripe pear. It has a smooth feel and nice weight in the mouth, and there is more pear fruit to enjoy in the flavour, as well as pleasant juiciness which is really enhanced when chilled. I think the crew would like it – crisp and refreshing after a busy day. Someone should tell them to leave room in the boot for a mixed dozen. Available from the cellar door in Wahgunyah, local outlets or visit www.allsaintswine.com.au.

with Naturopaths Belinda McPherson and Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) ◆ GUT FEELING: Many people experience stress in their gut.

How stress can cause physical signs and symptoms

STRESS is often associated with low mood or bad tempers and irritability, but stress can cause physical symptoms in many people too. Have you ever felt like your heart is beating too fast or had chest pain, only to discover that there is nothing wrong when you have a heart check up? Do you experience a bloated and queasy tummy, even though every gut test says you are fine? Are you constantly tired and feeling like your memory is somewhere else – maybe with the keys you have misplaced? Most people I talk to tend to have a specific ‘stress holding pattern’ which will dictate where their body chooses to store stress.

Sometimes they don’t even know they are stressed, they just feel a little ‘off balance’. An interesting point to consider, if you have experienced any of the above symptoms, is that mood receptors are found in every organ of the body (with the most being found in the gut). This is why some people experience stress in their tummy, others hold onto stress in their muscles and some of us like to lock it away in our chest. Stress can also down regulate our immune systems making us more prone to infections, cold, bugs and low energy when we are under pressure. Learning about your own stress pattern and creating a plan so you

can identify it early can be a great way to deal with your ‘unusual symptoms’. Steps you can take if you think stress is contributing to your physical symptoms: 1. See your naturopath to determine if stress is the cause of your physical symptoms. 2. Identify what is contributing to your stress levels – can you change anything? 3. Use your food to support healthy ‘feel good’ hormones: sugar and increase lean protein, wholegrains, and healthy oils. 4. Have an allergy test to determine if the foods you are eating are creating stress in your gut.

Female friendly fun to freestyle antics THINGS are busy across the snow resorts this week, with the potential for substantial snowfalls on the cards, and there is also plenty to see and do. This Friday at Falls Creek sees the Rails Under The Lights event at the Village Bowl, while on Saturday, August 10, the Birkebeiner Nordic Ski Club proudly presents the Ski de Femme event. Ski de Femme, which has been run since 1989 for women, offers free cross country skiing instruction in small groups for both novice and intermediate skiers. Also on August 10 at Falls Creek is the Big Air event on Slalom Street, the fourth event in Falls Creek Freeride Series. The Rocky Valley Rush and Sun Valley Ramble is sure to entice skiers of all skill levels on Sunday, August 11. Meanwhile, at Mt Hotham, the Hotham Masters Championships will be held from August 9-11, giving more mature aged snow athletes the chance to shine, in age ranges from 30-34 to 80 plus. August 11 will also see the

Hotham Junior Freestyle Series Rider X, aimed at competitors under the age of 18. Female snow enthusiasts will enjoy Chicks With Stix on August 10-11, set to help women improve their skills with specialised mentors. Buller Slopestyle will also happen on August 10. Mt Buffalo continues to see increasing amounts of snow, with sightseeing, snow play, tobogganing and cross country skiing dependent on snow coverage on any given day.

NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ WOOPS: German physicist Wilhelm Roentgen happened upon the invention of X ray films while experimenting with electrical currents through glass cathode-ray tubes.

Accidental inventions OFTEN, invention and innovation happens deliberately. But occasionally, a crafty inventor happens upon these discoveries entirely by accident. Yes, you have serendipity to thank for a staggering amount of things in your life, ranging from the oh-so handy super glue to the literal life-saving drug penicillin. This week, I thought we’d take a look at some of these miraculous inventions that chance has gifted us. X-rays In 1895, a German physicist named Wilhelm Roentgen was working with a cathode ray tube. Despite the fact that the tube was covered, he saw that a nearby fluorescent screen would glow when the tube was on and the room was dark. The rays were somehow illuminating the screen. Roentgen tried to block the rays, but most things that he placed in front of them didn’t seem to make a difference. When he placed his hand in front of the tube, he noticed he could see his bones in the image that was projected on the screen. He replaced the tube with a photographic plate to capture the images, creating the first X-rays. The technology was soon adopted by medical institutions and research

departments - though unfortunately, it’d be some time before the risks of X-ray radiation were understood. Radioactivity In 1896, intrigued by the discovery of X-rays, Henri Becquerel decided to investigate the connection between them and phosphorescence, a natural property of certain substances that makes them give off light. Becquerel tried to expose photographic plates using uranium salts that he hoped would absorb “x-ray” energy from the sun. He thought he needed sunlight to complete his experiment, but the sky was overcast. Yet even though the experiment couldn’t be completed, he developed the plates and found that the images showed up clear anyway – the uranium had emitted radioactive rays. He theorised and later showed that the rays came from the radioactive uranium salts. Penicillin In 1928 Sir Alexander Fleming, a professor of bacteriology, noticed mould had started to grow on his petri dishes of Staphylococcus bacteria colonies. While looking for the colonies he could salvage from those infected with the mould, he noticed something intriguing. Bacteria wasn’t growing around the mould.

The mould actually turned out to be a rare strain of Penicillin notatum that secreted a substance that inhibited bacterial growth. Penicillin was introduced in the 1940’s, helping open up the era of antibiotics. Super Glue When Harry Coover, Jr. first discovered the substance that would become Super Glue, he was actually experimenting with clear plastic gun sights for use in World War II. He’d been playing around with a class of chemicals called acrylates, but found that the formula he came up with was too sticky and abandoned the substance. Years later, in 1951, Coover was again looking at acrylates, this time for use in a heat-resistant coating for jet cockpits. One day, his colleague Fred Joyner spread one of the acrylate compounds between two lenses to examine it with a refractometer. To his dismay, he found that the two lenses stuck together and could not be separated, a waste of expensive lab equipment - or so he thought. This time around, Coover saw the potential in the sticky substance, and several years later it finally went on the market as an adhesive we know today as Super Glue.
