Creativeness flourishes even in lockdown ◆ HE’S JUST A TALENTED GUY: Musician Chris Mangan has mastered more than 20 instruments. PHOTO: Kieren Tilly
By BELINDA HARRISON RUTHERGLEN musician, producer and playwright, Chris Mangan, had big plans for 2020, the star of which was to be the Wangaratta Players performance of his play, Red Hot Mamas. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown put the kibosh on performances of any kind but Chris hasn’t remained idle -
using the time in lockdown to create and release singles with other musicians and brush up on his video production skills. Originally born and raised in Melbourne, Chris has always been a creative soul. “For as long as I can remember, I have always loved making up songs,” Chris said. “When I went to bed, in my mind I would write a new song almost every night. “I was probably just imitat-
ing what I heard on the radio that day, but it definitely taught me how songs were structured and how instruments related to each other. “My siblings are all much older than me and have vastly different tastes to each other, so the record collection at home was very broad; I think that’s why I love so many different genres. “My father wrote a couple of books and tried to teach him-
self a couple on instruments, but was more interested in performing magic and entertaining visitors with his ventriloquist dummy. “Unfortunately, he died when I was five years old but had I grown up with him, we would have been kindred spirits for sure.” At age 13, Chris began classical piano lessons and while he only learnt for a few years, it gave him excellent grounding
in scales and theory. It also whet his appetite to try other instruments including guitar, bass, drums, harmonica and mandolin. In the following years, Chris mastered over a dozen and the tally now stands at more than 20 string and brass instruments, keyboards and two particularly unusual ones in the theremin and nose whistle. “Because I could play so many instruments, I joined dif-
ferent types of bands, which gave me a great knowledge of musical genres and how to write songs to suit each style.” In his early 20s, Chris completed an Advanced Diploma in Sound Engineering which led to him working in recording studios and mixing for bands during their gigs and eventually became one of the house engineers at a 24 track studio in Fitzroy.

Dogs’ noise phobias DID you know dogs have a heightened sense of hearing and most will respond to loud and sudden sounds with fear? If your dog is excessively afraid of sudden noises then he or she may be suffering from noise phobia. But don’t worry, there are methods to make the experience more bearable both for you, and your dog. Common to dogs, noise phobia simply means an unnatural and excessive fear of loud and sudden noise, typically fireworks and storms. Dogs with noise phobia can exhibit mild signs such as not wanting to leave your side, panting and yawning, right through to more serious signs, such as destroying furniture, digging under fences, chewing door-frames and breaking down doors. Having a phobia is no fun for your dog and can be very distressing for you too. Typically, phobias get worse with time and they will not fix themselves unless something is done about it. Some breeds of dogs are more highly strung than others and are genetically predisposed to noise phobia. However some dogs may have developed a learned response to a bad experience that has progressed into a phobia. It is important to understand that managing and treating noise phobia

◆ SURPRISE: The fig tree on the sheltered side of the house has the most figs growing on it this year. PHOTO: Belinda Harrison
Fabulous fig trees
-"45 ZFBS * OPUJDFE B OFX QMBOU had seeded itself in my garden, well in three different places in my garden to be exact. At first I had no idea what they were going to be but I left them in with the intention of deciding whether they would get to stay or if they had to go once I was able to identify them. As you may have guessed by the heading - these newbies turned out to be fig trees, which I quickly identified by the unique leaves that sprouted. Two of the three didn’t bear fruit last year, the third only offering a single fig, and by the time I found it, it was overripe and I was devastated as I love figs, especially ones
fresh from the tree. As I was walking around and checking on the weed situation and the bulbs which are growing prolifically beside one of the trees earlier this week, I noticed that there were already three little figs growing alongside the leaves which have returned with the spring weather. The second tree, which is on the sheltered, south side of the house has about half a dozen smaller ones whereas the third (in the pool yard) has nothing yet, but it may not get any thanks to the Osteospermum (daisies) growing all over it. Apparently, fig trees tolerate almost any soil and a wide range of climates, which is lucky given what we experience here in the North East.
They like to be planted in full sun with protection from strong winds and if you protect the young trees from frost during their first and second winters, established fig trees will be frost hardy. Figs will happily grow in pots or contained garden beds and the restricting of their roots encourages fig trees to be more fruitful and will limit their size, which can be up to six metres high and five to six metres wide. I’m looking forward to getting a small crop this year which I can simply pull off and eat when they ripen in the summer and maybe next year I’ll have enough to think about using them in some recipes.

YOUR HEALTH Wood Park Wines Whitlands Pinot Gris 2019
EACH year, usually late in autumn, I look forward to hearing that the first snow has fallen in Whitlands. It’s a sign that winter has arrived and a distinctive chill can be felt right throughout the King Valley wine region. It’s amazing that a place which is so close to us, as the crow flies, can be blanketed in snow, and the air becomes so beautifully fresh and cold at that altitude that it almost hurts when you breathe in. So it’s not really surprising that grapes grown there tend to produce wines which reflect this crisp, pristine atmosphere a place that ices over in winter and always stays a few degrees cooler in the heat of summer. The grapes for Wood Park Wines Pinot Gris were grown at 800 metres above sea level on the Whitlands Plateau and it’s like the grapes have been in a cool room. It has a beautiful, apple fruity and also lightly floral aroma which sings with freshness and has just a hint of warm spice. The flavour is crisp and reminiscent of crunching into pear, but then later the taste of honey is left lingering behind in the mouth. The grapes were whole

with Naturopaths Belinda McPherson and Sophie Lorback (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) bunch pressed very gently to avoid picking up any of the pinkish colour or bitterness from the grapes. What you have is a lovely example of a Pinot Gris which is true to the fruit and to the terroir, and would be perfect with grilled white fish, shellfish or with Asian flavours. Talk about going out on a high.
This Day in History, 1867 THE first meeting of the North Ovens Shire was held on this day in 1867. Previously it was the North Ovens Road Board, but because the area exceeded one hundred square miles, and the sum of £1,001 had been collected in the last rate period, application was made to have it declared a Shire. The declaration was made on the 17th of September, 1867, and the first meeting of shire councillors was on the 7th of October.

◆ OUT AND ABOUT: Spring weather and the easing of restrictions creates more opportunities to enjoy our beautiful outdoor environment, which is good for our mental health.
Spring into improved mental health WITH the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions in our region and the warmer, longer days of spring, those who suffer most with their mental health during the cold days of winter are looking forward to spring. Being allowed out into our national parks and to meet up with friends in person to share a cup of coffee at our local cafes (many of whom have also been closed during this time) is something many of us have missed in the past months. During winter it’s easy to become cocooned indoors and not take the best care of yourself, especially given the COVID lockdowns and uncertainty around when things will be returning to ‘normal’ but the World Health Organization says ‘mental health is an integral
part of health; indeed, there is no health without mental health.’ Physical activity outdoors such as walking, biking or running is a good way to help improve your mental health and we are lucky to have lots of local bike and walking trails to give you a change of scenery as you take in nature and settle into a daily exercise routine. A healthy, balanced diet alongside your physical activities also plays an important part in your mental health and with lighter meal options on the menu it’s easy to include more fruits and vegetables to your meals. Food and drinks which contain sugar, artificial additives and caffeine can have the opposite effect on your mental health, so avoiding them is a good idea.
Ensuring you get enough sleep each night and managing stress are other important factors in your mental health. Establishing a good sleeping routine and finding outlets to manage your stress such as yoga, meditation, staying positive and surrounding yourself with a supportive network of friends, family and co-workers will go a long way to keeping you in a good space. It’s important to take care of your mental health all year round and the plans and routines you put into place now will help you establish a regular pattern to see you through the less palatable times when outdoors seems too dark or cold to enjoy.

“At the studio, I became a session musician, playing on a lot of advertising jingles and countless demos . “I wrote a few songs for a comedy entourage that was performing at theatre restaurants and also for the Scout’s Bag Show Revue and I was performing original songs in a contemporary rock band. “I learned a lot about layering instruments and tricks to getting a good mix and that led me to producing and engineering a few indie albums. One of those was an album for children which Chris co-wrote and co-produced. It was released on cassette with a fully illustrated book including lyrics. “About 10 years later, it was re-released on CD with some additional material recorded at my home studio in Rutherglen, he said. The move to Rutherglen occurred in 1994, with Chris, his wife and two children coming to live in the house his mother was brought up in. “My wife and I agreed that the North East would be a good place to raise our kids and I could still continue with my music and production, he said. When Chris met Oxley singer/ actress/songwriter Linda Simpson, he added the monikor of playwright to his impressive list of skills. “Linda had the idea to perform a set of Sophie Tucker songs and I was to be Sophie’s piano player, Ted Shapiro, he said. “Sophie Tucker was a famous Vaudeville Burlesque singer and comedienne and when Linda told me about it, I was suddenly inspired to write a two act stageplay with nine songs and 16 characters. “Thankfully, Linda loved what I’d come up with and approached the Wangaratta Players about producing it. “The show is set in contemporary times, with the main character meeting Sophie Tucker which plac-
es Sophie in a modern timeline. “Sophie offers to mentor the troubled young woman and that results in a delightful blend of comedy and pathos touching on all the big topics of sex, love, selfesteem, lies and the meaning of life. “I am so grateful and appreciative to Linda for inspiring me to write a musical, and to Wangaratta Players for producing the show whenever that actually happens!â€? While Chris isn’t able to perform his songs in front of live audiences at the moment, technology has enabled him to continue working with other musicians and songwriters. “I recently released a single with one of my songwriting partners from Melbourne and the whole project was created online without us meeting in person,â€? he said. “He recorded his parts and sent them to me so I could record my parts and mix and master them ready for release. “I have also co-written and recorded half a dozen songs with Everton drummer, Rolie Dwyer. “He had a great idea of texting one line of a lyric, and then I would text back the next line until we had a song. “I then composed the music and recorded a demo and sent it to him to see if he liked it. “Over the years, I’ve written songs in so many different ways - sometimes, the whole song is written in my mind and then I transcribe it to an instrument, other times I write music to lyrics, or combine past musical ideas with new ones. “The creating process is what motivates me. I love seeing an idea developing into a ďŹ nished product.â€? GONE FISHING
TECH & SCIENCE
◆ NICE CATCH: A freshwater blackfish, often referred to as a greasy, caught in a tributary of the King River last week.
Yellowbelly are biting and so are ‘greasys’ THE weekend’s warm weather was absolutely fantastic and has no doubt stirred a few fish up across the region. Last Thursday I fished Broken Creek near Katamatite with my friend Rohan. The fishing was very slow but I did manage to catch one lovely yellowbelly of 44cm long using worms as bait. This is on the back of two nice yellowbelly over there a couple of weeks earlier. I have had reports of yellowbelly being caught at a number of locations across the region this week including the Ovens River here in Wangaratta, Lake Hume, Allan’s Flat waterhole and Lake Nillahcootie. Spring time is definitely the best time of the year to target yellowbelly in North East Victoria, particularly the second half of spring, so things should only keep getting better. Rohan and I also fished for trout in a tributary of the King River where we found quite dirty water thanks to a downpour of rain last week. The fishing was very slow. We managed to catch one small brown trout each and lose one each and that was it for

with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA around four hours fishing. That report of slow fishing can change in a heartbeat though as the dirty water usually flushes quite quickly out of the hills. After the sun set Rohan and I went bait fishing with worms and had a fantastic time fishing for freshwater blackfish, often called greasy’s due to their slippery skin. We caught around 10-15 blackfish, with the biggest being around 30-33cm approx. Freshwater blackfish do not grow very large in this area and anything over 30cm is a monster. Because of this they are rarely targeted by anglers, but those that do target them really enjoy it. Blackfish can be found in most of the mountainous streams here in North East Victoria. The best spots to look are streams with a gravel bottom, deep holes and lots of snags.
The history of alchemy FAMOUSLY known as the pseudoscientific study of transmutation, specifically turning lead into gold, as well as the study of immortality via the production of a Philosopher’s Stone, alchemy has a storied history that is often referenced in modern day fantasy literature. The word alchemy is derived from the Arabic alkimia, in which al is the definite article, and kima is thought to be derived from either the Greek, chyma, meaning to fuse or cast a metal, or from khem, “the dark land”, the ancient Egyptians’ name for their country. The origins of alchemy can be traced to Greece’s Hellenistic period from 300 BC to 300 AD, and is thought to have been centred around the Egyptian city of Alexandria, which was the cultural capital of the time. Alchemy diffused into the Muslim Empire with the fall of Alexandria to the Arabs in the 7th century AD, and then into Europe in the 13th century AD via Toledo and Sicily, which at the time were Islamic centres of learning.
Alchemy flourished vigorously in Europe up until the establishment of modern chemistry at the turn of the 19th century. Alchemy is a composite creature which resulted from the union of Egyptian metal working techniques with Greek philosophy. From this melting pot of ideas emerged a philosophical system in which laboratory experiments were performed in an attempt to prove the veracity of spiritual concepts on a material plane. According to alchemy, both animate and inanimate matter were unified through the possession of a permanent ‘soul’ housed in a variety of temporary bodies, and that chemical change could be shown in terms of human change, that a union of two substance was like a human marriage, and that the turning of base metals into gold was mystically linked by imitative magic to the transformation of the adept’s nature into a nobler state.

The successful production of gold was considered to be a sign that the practitioner had achieved ‘enlightenment’. Alchemy’s theory of matter was based upon Aristotle’s theory of four elements - air, water fire, and earth. According to Aristotle, all matter was composed of these elements in varying proportions, and it was the ratio of these proportions which produced the multitude of substances that comprise the material world. Though ultimately superseded by modern chemistry, with the vast majority of its theories and studies disproven (though some simpler, translated experiments were found to be sound in recent years), modern scientists owe a great deal to the medieval alchemists. While the foundational theories were flawed, their methodology was adapted and refined over the years to what we now appreciate as the modern scientific method.
