CONSTANTLY inspired by the world around her, Glenrowan writer Margaret Hickey has little time to rest on her laurels. And this year has been a particularly busy one for the prolific author, who is known across the North East and beyond for her prose and plays alike. She came second in the state for the 2018 Victorian Writers Grace Marion Award – and first in regional Victoria - for her short story, Binky, which was written about a failed playwright returning to the places of his childhood, a farm in the Western District. She also flew to Perth in October to receive first prize in the Australasian Association of Writers and the Australian Short Story Festival emerging writers prize for her short story, Fowler’s Bay. The Fowler’s Bay short story was set in South Australia, in “an incredible landscape of history and change,” Margaret said. “Both Binky and Fowler’s Bay are about people returning to the rural places of their childhood.” Margaret said she was very happy to be recognised for her work. “Winning those two awards so close in succession was very satisfactory,” she said.

New data on shares helps taxpayers to get it right THE Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is once again extending its data matching program, this time focusing on share data. According to assistant commissioner Kath Anderson, the latest data matching protocol will see the ATO continue to receive share data from the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC). “The data includes details of the price, quantity and time of individual trades dating back to 2014, with more than 500 million records obtained,â€? Ms Anderson said. “The information complements information that the ATO already holds from brokers, share registries and exchanges.â€? The ATO will use sophisticated technology to match the data against information reported in tax returns and other ATO records. “We will use the information to identify taxpayers who have not properly reported the sale or transfer of shares as income or capital gains in their income tax returns,â€? Ms Anderson said. “Having access to increased data will help us to protect honest taxpayers, by detecting those who have not done the right thing.â€? Ms Anderson said share transactions are high on the ATO’s priority list given more than ďŹ ve million Australian adults now own shares, and the ATO intends to also make the information available to taxpayers as part of the tax return preďŹ ll service in the future.

There are a few simple rules taxpayers buying and selling shares should follow to avoid making mistakes on their tax return. t 'JSTU NBLF TVSF ZPV LFFQ good records of share purchase and sale prices, as well as costs like brokerage fees. If you sold part of your share holdings, you will need to keep records of the parcel you sold and the parcel you are still holding. This information is critical in calculating your capital losses or gains. t 4FDPOE NBLF TVSF ZPV EF clare your capital gains in your tax return. t 'JOBMMZ JG ZPV IBWF NBEF B capital loss this year, remember you cannot claim it as a deduction in your return. However, you can offset the loss against any capital gains you make this year, and if there is any loss remaining you can carry it forward to reduce any future capital gains you make. Ms Anderson said taxpayers or tax agents who realise they have made an error or left out their gains should not panic. “If you realise you made a mistake, contact the ATO as soon as possible, she said. Taxpayers contacted by the ATO will be given the opportunity to verify information collected from data providers before any compliance action is undertaken and will be given at least 28 days to clarify any information obtained. Details of the ATO’s data matching strategies are published at ato.gov.au/datamatching.

Gardening improves health GARDENING is good for your health. You may not necessarily think of gardening as exercise but it certainly can be. The jobs we need to tend to now in the garden certainly give our muscles a workout. Here are just a few. Weeding is necessary at the moment because they seem to grow overnight with the warm weather and the water we are giving the garden. It is important to keep up with the weeds because they will rob your plants of water and nutrients if left to ourish in your garden. If you haven’t already fertilised, do it now. Plants will be cope better with the summer heat if they are strong and healthy. Make sure you water well after applying any fertiliser to ensure it is not

sitting on top of dry soil and foliage. Top up mulch on all garden beds and around trees after you have fed them. Water this down well so it settles and an extra drink won’t hurt at this stage as it is very dry already. Mulching will keep the ground moist and help eliminate weed competition also. I’m sure you are all busy mowing lawns at the moment. The smell and look of freshly mown spring lawn is one of my favourites. Keeping up with whipper snipping and mowing is also a good idea to minimise areas for snakes to hide in your garden. It is apparently a bad season for snake sightings this spring. With the dry season we are experiencing keeping the area around your house mown and tidy is important also. Gardening is also good for your mental wellbeing.

Planting, mowing, weeding or harvesting can give us a real sense of achievement. Picking some of the ďŹ rst roses in spring, which always seem seem to be the biggest and best of the season, and bringing them inside is a real treat. Share a bunch with a friend who may not have their own to pick - it will make their day. Perfumes in the garden can evoke warm memories too. So many people come into the nursery and smell a certain ower and exclaim it makes them think of their grandparent’s garden that they played in as children or the ower was one of their mum/dad’s favourite. If you have lost someone, having a plant or ower in your garden that gives you fond memories is a great idea. Happy gardening.

this is usually given through an intravenous catheter which can also be used to administer uids to the animal during the surgery. Once the animal is asleep a breathing tube is placed into their airway and gaseous inhalation anaesthesia is commenced. During this time the animal is constantly monitored by a vet nurse and specialised monitoring equipment to ensure its heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen levels are maintained, at this stage every effort is made to keep the animal warm as anaesthetised animals can quickly get cold. After the surgery is complete the animal is still monitored closely, kept warm and given pain relief, the animal usually stays in hospital until it is fully awake and assessed to be able to move around comfortably, the surgery site is checked to if the animal may need an Elizabethan collar or bandages to stop it licking or chewing the surgery site. We take the pet for a walk and try to get them to eat before they go home.

DURING their life most pets have to undergo some sort of surgery at the vets. For young animals this can be when they are desexed and at other times surgery can be required for many other possible reasons such as tumour removal, dental work, exploratory surgery, orthopaedic procedures - the list of possibilities is extensive. When an animal undergoes surgery it needs to be fasted usually overnight so that there is no risk of vomiting when they are under the anaesthetic or waking up, otherwise they could choke. Small pets such as guinea pigs and rabbits have different requirements for fasting but the clinic will give speciďŹ c instructions which should be followed. With day procedures the animal is admitted in the morning and undergoes a health check by the Vet or Vet Nurse. At this stage a sedative is usually administered this may contain pain relief and it relaxes the patient before surgery. Often before surgery blood tests may be performed to ensure the pet has no major underlying health problems that can’t be detected on a routine physical exam. If a full anaesthetic is required

SUDOKU PUZZLE 7 ◆ NICE CATCH: Brothers Terry and Gary Alexander with a couple of Lake Nillahcootie yellowbelly they caught last week. Both fish were caught on small yabbies. It was catch and release fishing. The big yellowbelly was released back into Lake Nillahcootie and the smaller one was released into the esky under the ice.

Lake William Hovell has been producing a few trout as well. I have had two separate reports of trout being trolled in Lake William Hovell early in the morning. Both reports were of three fish each, with the biggest being 34cm. Yellowbelly Any waterway that has yellowbelly in it is worth fishing at the moment. Lake Nillahcootie is fishing very

well, and so are lakes Hume, Eildon, Eppalock and there’s even been a few yellowbelly caught in Waranga Basin. My dad and uncle caught some lovely yellowbelly at Lake Nillahcootie on yabbies on the weekend. Dad has been going over there two to three times a week and catching nice fish each time, mostly using small yabbies as bait. Redfin I haven’t had any redfin reports from Lake Buffalo or Lake William Hovell yet, but I have had reports from just about every other known redfin waterway in the region. I’ve seen photos of some very large redfin over 40cm in length show up on my fishbrain app that were caught in Lake Hume and had a photo of 30 redfin over 30cm in length sent to me that were caught in Waranga Basin two weeks ago.

Great time to be fishing I LOVE this time of the year because the fishing is just nuts. Everything is biting everywhere at the moment. It does not matter which waterway you go to, there is something to be caught. Trout Trout numbers are still pretty thin on the ground in many areas although there are a few fish to be found it you look around. If you do happen to find a few trout, then they will most likely be biting. It is actually finding them in the creeks and rivers that is the hard part at the moment. The most consistent reports seem to be coming from the Ovens River upstream of Bright, with a few trout also being caught in the Kiewa River around Mt Beauty, and the Buckland River.

It seems, however, that those looking for a non-alcoholic beverage are often at a loss. The champagne cocktails look much more elegant and grown up than a glass of lemonade and a cold beer much more tempting than a glass of water or soda water. For those wanting to look after their non-drinking guests and their own livers, we think it is fun to experiment with herbal mocktails. If you do not offer some kind of exciting looking and tasting non–alcoholic version at your parties you end up creating a divide between those

guests who are partaking in festive drinking and those who are not. You can easily create a relaxed more inclusive party atmosphere that allows everyone to celebrate with or without the alcohol. Punches and mocktails are a great way to show off your creativity. Adapt clever garnishes from a cocktail book or look up some ideas online. Experiment with different juices, flavoured mineral waters, and tropical fruits or come to our Wild Drinks and Herbal Cocktails workshop to learn more about foraging for drinks.

Sweet potato gnocchi with spring vegetables, herbs and Persian feta SWEET potato is often used in winter dishes, however Australian sweet potato season runs year round, making it a delicious, healthy vegetable any time of year. Sweet potatoes are very high in both vitamins A and C, essential for healthy eyes and skin and play a key part in immune function. This recipe comes from Acre Eatery and more recipes like this can be found at www.australiansweetpotatoes.com.au. METHOD 1. For the gnocchi: spike the unpeeled sweet potato a few times and bake in the oven at 170°c for 45mins - 1hour or until the potato is soft. 2. Scoop the flesh of the sweet potato into a mixing bowl. Discard the skin. Mix the ricotta, parmesan, nutmeg and salt until well combined and almost completely smooth. Add the flour ½ cup at a time, kneading very gently after each addition (don’t over knead it – you don’t want it to get tough). 3. Eventually, as the dough becomes easier to handle, transfer it to a clean floured surface and form it into a loaf around 25cm x 8cm. Slice a thin slice off the loaf and roll and stretch the slice on

At this point you can make the sauce. 5. Warm a large flat bottom frying pan gently then add 2 tsp of olive oil. Gently sweat the onions and garlic until soft. 6. Add the asparagus, broad beans, peas and a pinch of salt, and continue to cook for 1-2 mins. 7. Add the sugar snap peas and spinach, followed by the vegetable stock and lemon. 8. Add your cooked gnocchi back to the pan before whisking in the butter and remaining olive oil to thicken the sauce. 9. Finish by adding the picked mint leaves and season to taste. 10. Self-sabotaging jobseekers: Using social media inappropriately SOCIAL media is now a big part of life, but some jobseekers continue to undermine their job search by using social media inappropriately, says recruiting experts Hays. Engaging in a ame war, an online proďŹ le at odds with details in a CV, and profanity-ďŹ lled content are just three issues that potentially cost people job opportunities. “Your online activity can have an impact on your chance of securing a job, particularly if it’s offensive or contradicts the professional image or experience you are portraying to hiring managers,â€? says Nick Deligiannis, managing director of Hays in Australia and New Zealand. “We live in a digital age and most employers review a job candidate’s social proďŹ les before inviting them in for an interview. “This gives a hiring manager a more detailed insight into a candidate’s skills. “The most popular platform is LinkedIn because it brings experience to life and tells a story about your career and what you are looking for. “But jobseekers should also expect that any social proďŹ le that comes up in a search will be reviewed.â€? Nick cites a recent example of expletive-ridden tweets that cost a woman a NASA internship. “When online, assume that everything you post could be viewed by a potential employer and used as part of their decision making process,â€? he said. TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ RUN AND JUMP: The remake of Wonderboy 3 is a welcome addition to the resurgence of the 2D platformer genre, while the original was a video game icon of the 1990’s.

2D side scroller games - the genre that shaped an era RECENTLY I’ve been working on a passion of mine - an adventure story that doubles as both a new age version of a digital ‘pop-up’ book, and a homage to the old 2D side scrolling video games that I grew up with. I’m a child of the 80’s and 90’s, the golden age of video gaming, and in many ways video game technology grew up with me. I have fond memories of my family’s very first home PC - a Commodore 64 - and the trials and tribulations involved in getting a video game to run on it. Somehow, at the tender age of five or six, I managed to assemble the computer, insert the 51/4” floppy disk into the seperate drive, type the necessary command prompts into the bright blue screen, and wait the obligatory 5-10 mins for the game to actually load while my senses were driven crazy by a perpetually flashing rainbow loading screen (apparently attempting to induce epileptic seizures was part and parcel of video game design back then). Mr. Robot was my favourite game, not least because it had a level cre-

ation mode, a feature that was leaps and bounds ahead of its era. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was my second favourite, although I found out years later, on the internet, that the game was broken and that level I was stuck on was actually impossible to beat. That’s right kids, back in my day, you had to have the patience of a saint and advanced computing and technical skill just to play a game that might very well be broken with no way to finish it - hooray. Shortly after this, I received a Sega Master System for Christmas, and that was when my love of side scrolling video games really took off. A brief history of 2D side scrollers The first side scrolling video games The first generation of 8-bit gaming took place primarily during the 1980’s. The first game to fall under the “scrolling” category was Jump Bug, which was released in 1981. In this arcade-style game the player controlled a Volkswagen Beetle through different levels of increasing difficulty. Another popular arcade style game

of this genre was Pac-Land, released in 1984. This game took Pacman and incorporated the main character into a sidescroller game. It was similar to the idea of Pacman since the player collected fruit for points and could gather certain tokens to change the familiar ghost enemies to blue so they could also be eaten for points. In 1985, the home gaming console market changed forever. 8-bit Home consoles A new system was released in North America and with it one of the most popular games ever. Super Mario Bros. was released with the Nintendo Entertainment System. This move propelled home gaming back into popularity, since it was an efficient, smooth running system that handled the demanding side-scrolling graphics with ease. In total Super Mario sold around 40 million copies worldwide. The NES and the Super Mario franchise dominated the market well through the 8-bit generation of 2-dimensional games.

Speak to your agent about listing on realestateview.com.au. Be seen everywhere.

Although the Sega Master system did lag behind its chief competitor, the arrival of its own mascot in 1991, Sonic the Hedgehog, saw a marked increase in sales and interest from gamers. 16-bit consoles The second generation of gaming, 16-bit, brought about another wave of side-scrolling games with the Sega Genesis released in 1989. This console had superior graphics and was the only console on the market at the time. This was the case until Nintendo released their newest game console Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) around a year later. Games such as Donkey Kong Country, Earth Worm Jim, Ranger X and Castlevania were absolute eye candy for their time, and the new levels of graphical fidelity helped suspend disbelief and create emotional investment in what was happening on the screen. 32 and 64 bit consoles This new dawn of consoles saw a dramatic shift into the world of 3D graphics, and for the longest time I believed that the old 2D side scrollers I’d grown to love had actually died

out, never to return. After all, suddenly players weren’t restricted to only move in two directions, now characters on your screen like Mario, Link and Lara Croft had a three dimensional world they could move around in. Who in their right mind would want to play Alex Kidd or Wonder Boy? Steam and the Indie Scene It turned out, plenty of people thought the way I did, and now I’m happy to see that there are an abundance of new titles that utilise the tried and true 2D side scrolling mechanic, largely created by independent game developers. One company, Lizardcube, has even created a fantastic remake of Wonder Boy 3 - a game I adored as a kid, and I love it every bit as much today. There’s something to be said for the golden oldies. With publishing platforms like Steam, and fund generating sites like Indiegogo and Kickstarter having taken the video game scene by storm, I look forward to seeing what the future brings for the humble 2D Side Scroller.

Not just your average little witch CHANNEL CHAT

THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS:

SHOW: Chilling Adventures of Sabrina CHANNEL: Netflix TIME: On demand

Playing for Keeps (TEN, Wednesday, 8:40pm): The football oriented drama series has rocked the nation by revealing that Rusty was gay, but it’s about time right? Manifest (Nine, Wednesday 8:45pm): This is seemingly inspired by the MH370 disappearance, so if you’re into conspiracies give this one a watch.

with NATALIE MILLER REBOOTS are either highly anticipated or written off as unwatchable lazy adaptations to something that’s seen as a classic, however, the new incarnation of “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” is nothing to squint at. As someone who has watched all seasons of the iconic 90s sitcom “Sabrina the Teenage Witch”, I can definitively say that the reboot isn’t

similar to the sitcom but more alike to a horror film. This show is not for the faint hearted, but develops a new style of TV viewing that caters for a modern audience. The series follows young girl, Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka), who is half witch, half mortal. She lives with her two aunts Hilda (Lucy Davis) and Zelda (Miranda Otto) Spellman, and

Family Food Fight (Nine, Wednesday 7:30): Gather the family and take an hour or so out of your night to sit back and watch the second season of the zany food show and have some relatively mediocre fun.

◆ SPELLBINDING TV: Step aside Melissa Joan Hart, Kiernan Shipka is the new witch in town.

Cousin Ambrose Spellman (Chance Perdomo). With the lead up to her “dark baptism”, she must make a choice - to stay living her mortal life or fulfil her true potential as a witch given by her late father. As you can guess Sabrina has a hard time with this choice - she doesn’t want to say good-

bye to her life as a mortal, but she doesn’t want to disappoint the Witch Council either by not becoming a trained witch like her father. However, she doesn’t want to sign her life away to who they call the “Dark Lord”. Inspired by the Archie Comic series, The Chilling Adven-

tures of Sabrina has obvious direct links to another Archie comics Netflix adaptation series, “Riverdale”. The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina refers to characters and places as seen and mentioned in the Riverdale series,

especially linking to the latest third season in the franchise Personally I enjoyed the series but I suggest only watching it if you are okay with excessive violence, gore and supernatural themes, thus the MA15+ rating.
