Rainbow warrior for inclusion
By BELINDA HARRISON
AS a nurse in the Emergency Department of Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW), Allison Leatham is all too aware of the homophobic, transphobic and biphobia discrimination experienced by members of the LGBTQIA+ community and queer identifying staff members. But Allison, who identifies as a bisexual non-binary person and uses they/them pronouns, wants to change all that. She, along with LGBTQIA+ identifying staff members and NHW management, are working towards Rainbow Tick Accreditation for the hospital, with Allison recently recognised with an Organisational Improvement Award from NHW for the work they’ve done on the project. “It was really rewarding to be recognised and it’s wonderful that the leadership team (of NHW) recognises the importance of LGBTQIA+ inclusive practice and how vital it is,” she said.
Rainbow Tick Accreditation is a national program developed by Rainbow Health Victoria (formerly Gay and Lesbian Health Victoria) for organisations who are committed to safe and inclusive practice and service delivery for LGBTI people. To date, only 32 organisations across Australia in the sexual health, aged care and community health service sectors have gained the accreditation, and only two of those are hospitals - Peninsula Health and Hepburn Health Service. “I started off wanting to improve LGBTQIA+ inclusive practices in the area I worked and attended conferences and undertook training to improve my knowledge and leadership skills before approaching a member of the executive team to make it known how important this work was,” Allison said.

Tick paralysis: is it in our area? WHILE it is very uncommon for paralysis ticks to be in Wangaratta that doesn’t mean your dog or cat isn’t at risk. We had two confirmed cases in our hospital in the first two weeks of December. Are you travelling to the coast or up north these Christmas holidays? If so, then your dogs and cats must be protected against paralysis ticks. Paralysis ticks cause an ascending paralysis starting in the back legs and progressing forward. Clinical signs include vomiting, change in the sound of bark or meow, dilated pupils, weakness in hind limbs/inability to stand, change in breathing pattern and often death.
with Chloe Trompf, Veterinarian There are many products to protect your pets against paralysis ticks. One of the most effective on the market is Bravecto; which is a threemonthly chew for dogs and spot on for cats. Ticks can travel home in your bags from holidays, on other animals and via many other routes, so it’s better to be safe then sorry. If you believe your pet may have a tick, contact your local veterinarian as soon as possible to find out more.
PET CORNER WANGARATTA RSPCA has many lovable creatures waiting for the perfect family to take them home. If you want to add a furry friend to your home, contact the RSPCA on (03) 5722 2874 or visit the shelter in Connell Street. Wangaratta RSPCA’s animal adoption source code is BR100934. BUNDLE OF JOY: Indy is looking for her family, who she would love and adore forever. The five year old female staffy is both happy and boisterous; a great addition to any home. Indy’s microchip number is 900012000363736.

◆ Ensuring you water at the right time will not only save you water but help your plants survive as well.
When to water - getting it right WATERING at dawn is better than during the heat of the day when evaporation will waste much applied water. Watering at dusk after a hot day may be desirable but moisture resting on foliage overnight encourages fungal diseases. Frequent, light watering encourages shallow roots, so aim for longer, infrequent watering which allows the top layer of soil to start drying out before watering again. Freshly planted trees and shrubs will require additional attention to watering as they become established. As the roots grow deeper into the soil, they become less dependent on water available in the topsoil and irrigation becomes less critical. Heavy mulching of garden beds around trees and shrubs will minimise irrigation. The watering requirements of shrubs and trees varies enormously from species to species. The water and feeding needs of fruit trees are normally greater than ornamental plants of similar size. Mixing plenty of organic matter into the soil prior to planting will not only help the plants access nutrients, but will also help the soil retain moisture, reducing the need for watering. Keep grass and competing weeds clear of root zones and again mulch heavily to conserve water. Growing vegetables need between 25mm and 50mm of water per week for good growth. If watering by hand or with a sprinkler, a watering about once a week so that the water soaks to a depth of about 150mm will often be adequate, repeated again when the top few millimetres of soil have started to dry out.

A vegetable garden can be effectively watered by sprinklers, micro sprays or drippers, but if using sprinklers, remember the need to avoid too much water standing on foliage, particularly overnight. Groups of plants in containers may be watered as a group by sprinklers or micro sprays but the most efficient solution is to use drip irrigation, with individual running to each pot. Each dripper is fitted to the end of a piece of flexible feeder tube connected to a main polytube feeder. The flexible feeder tubes allow the pots to be moved about or changed at will. The flow rate of the drippers should be adjusted to suit the size and water needs of each plant. Avoid standing pots in saucers or on a surface which may block the drainage holes or on which rainwater will collect and stand. Container plants require moisture to drain freely through the potting mix, otherwise their roots will rot. The solution can be found in small ‘feet’ which raise the pot from the surface, permitting free drainage. Water-absorbing granules mixed into the potting mix reduces the risk of plants drying out and allows longer spells between watering. Plants grown in hanging containers, particular those made of porous organic materials, are particularly vulnerable to moisture loss as well as being easily forgotten. Like other container plants, they are best watered by a system of feeder lines fixed to the overhead structure with drippers on flexible tubes running into each basket.

“Luckily I timed it right as they had already started to plan the journey towards accreditation.” That journey began back in 2017 when NHW carried out a gap analysis and audit to see where the organisation was doing well in LGBTQIA+ inclusive practices and in what areas they could improve. It all really took off in 2019 when a call went out to staff to express interest in a working group; project officers were assigned to the accreditation process and a number of changes in staff training and internal policies and procedures were implemented. “I see diverse sexualities being more and more accepted and celebrated, which is fantastic, but acceptance, understanding of and celebration of trans and gender diversity and people with intersex variations still requires more work. “There is such a lack of information about these communities, especially in
the media, and it’s certainly an area we are working on at Northeast Health Wangaratta.” In December, the first visual change occurred with the raising of the rainbow flag at the front of the hospital and, as project officer, Allison led the historic ceremony which was well-attended by staff, health workers and members of the public. NHW CEO Margaret Bennett and NHW board chair Jonathon Green also attended, both speaking with pride and enthusiasm for what had already been achieved, and what was still to come. “The raising of the flag has been a big statement showing our organisation’s commitment to improving inclusive practices for LGBTQIA+ patients, visitors, family and staff,” Allison explained. “As the largest employer in town, NHW has a responsibility to lead the way in improving inclusive practice - not just for the LGBTQIA+ community, but to all our people and for

all forms of diversity. “We need to be looking at those who don’t have a voice, those who aren’t represented at the table, and empowering others to have their voices heard. “There are a number of organisations in the Wangaratta region who are working towards Rainbow Tick Accreditation, which is a positive step, but I’d really like to see more organisations and services take on the challenge of implementing inclusive practice for the LGBTQIA+ community. “LGBTQI+ people experience higher rates of exclusion and discrimination, depression, anxiety, poorer health outcomes, higher rates of homelessness and domestic violence, and service providers need to be able to respond appropriately - working towards Rainbow Tick Accreditation and learning what that really means is a great way to start. “Everyone should be able to work where they’re not only accepted for who they are, but wanted and welcomed.”

◆ HEALTH: Job Outlook predicts that service industries are set to boom in the next five years, particularly in health care and social assistance;
A strong job outlook over next four years
THE future of Australian jobs is strong, with the number of workers in most industries expected to grow over the next four years according to the Australian Government’s Job Outlook. Job Outlook is an initiative of the Department of Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business and provides information about Australian careers, labour market trends and employment projections. The government expects there to be around 886,000 more jobs by 2023. Opportunities don’t just come from jobs growth or increased demand for goods and services, many job openings will come from workers leaving to do things including study, change jobs, care for family, retire, or travel. In fact, more than one million Australians change jobs every year and more than half move to a different industry or career. Job Outlook predicts that service industries are set to boom in the next five years, particularly in: Health Care and Social Assistance; Construction; Education and Training; Professional, Scientific and Technical Services. Almost two in every three new jobs created will come from these four industries according to Job Outlook estimates. Department of Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business labour market analyst, Ivan Neville outlined some of the expected changes. “We are seeing the strongest employment growth in quite traditional service roles – in particular, there’s strong demand for carers across the board,” he said.
He said there were a number of reasons for jobs growth in these industries An ageing population, the NDIS (Australia’s National Disability Insurance Scheme), and growing demand for childcare and home-care based services is driving jobs growth. Investment in infrastructure (like roads, railways and airports) means jobs will continue to grow in the engineering construction sector. Workers will also be needed to build home for our growing population. The number of school-aged children is growing and there is strong demand for adult and community education. More people are working part-time and in non-teaching support roles. Demand is growing for qualified workers, especially in computer system design, and the management and consulting services sectors. Jobs are also expected to grow to support leisure activities. According to Job Outlook, Australians love their sport and are becoming more health conscious. Jobs in the Arts and Recreation Services industry will grow over the next five years off the back of strong involvement in sport at all levels and ongoing demand for personal fitness services. The fast-growing Accommodation and Food Services industry in Australia will also offer up more jobs over the next five years. This is backed by strong domestic and international tourism and more Australians making time for social coffee and dining experiences. For more information visit joboutlook.gov.au.

GONE FISHING
◆ AT LEAST IT’S A FISH: A bright orange carp caught in Broken Creek on worms last Thursday afternoon.
Fishing has slowed down
with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ RUNNING THE WORLD: From smart phones, to cars, the loud and obnoxious toys your kids received for Christmas, these cells of all sizes have a storied history.
The history of batteries
with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA wala itself. Late last week I headed over to Katamatite to fish the Broken Creek. I really enjoy my time over there even though the fishing isn’t usually great. I managed to catch two carp, both quite vibrantly coloured one was bright orange and the other was black. For some reason that Broken Creek/Boosey Creek area seems to have a higher number of coloured carp than most places. I caught both of my carp of cheese. Between Christmas and New Year we took the kids to Lake William Hovell swimming. I made a few casts and caught one tiny redfin. It wasn’t much, but it was a start and hopefully the fishing will improve up there as the lake level drops.
BATTERIES are so ubiquitous today that they’re almost invisible to us. Yet they are a remarkable invention with a long and storied history, and an equally exciting future. A battery is essentially a device that stores chemical energy that is converted into electricity. Basically, batteries are small chemical reactors, with the reaction producing electrons, ready to flow through an electircal device. Batteries have been with us for a long time. In 1938 the Director of the Baghdad Museum found what is now referred to as the “Baghdad Battery” in the basement of the museum. Analysis dated it at around 250BC and of Mesopotamian origin. Controversy surrounds this earliest example of a battery but suggested uses may have included electroplating, pain relief or a religious tingling experience. American scientist and inventor Benjamin Franklin first used the term “battery” in 1749 when he was doing experiments with electricity using a set of linked capacitors. The first true battery was invented by the Italian physicist Alessandro Volta in 1800. Volta stacked copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) discs, separated by cloth soaked in salty water. Wires connected to either end of the stack produced a continuous stable current. Each cell (a set of a Copper and Zinc discs and the salt water) produces 0.76 Volts (V). A multiple of this value is obtained by stacking a number of these cells together. One of the most enduring batteries - the lead-acid battery - was invented in 1859 and is still the technology used to start most internal combustion engine cars today.
It is the oldest example of rechargeable battery. In 1980, the American physicist and prolific inventor Professor John Goodenough devised a new type of lithium battery in which the lithium (Li) could migrate through the battery from one electrode to the other as a Li+ ion. Lithium is one of the lightest elements in the periodic table and it has one of the largest electrochemical potentials, therefore this combination produces some of the highest possible voltages in the most compact and lightest volumes. Depending on the transition metal used in the lithiumion battery, the cell can have a higher capacity, but can be more reactive and susceptible to a phenomenon known as thermal runaway. In the case of lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO2) batteries made by Sony in the 1990s, this led to many such batteries catching fire, and caused a bit of chaos with multiple devices recalled. As such, the possibility of making battery cathodes from nano-scale material, and hence more reactive, was out of the question. But in the 1990s Goodenough again made a huge leap in battery technology by introducing a stable lithium-ion cathode based on lithium iron and phosphate. This cathode is thermally stable. It also means that nano-scale lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) or lithium ferro phosphate (LFP) materials can now be made safely into large format cells that can be rapidly charged and discharged. And now, John Goodenough, might just be about the reinvent the wheel again with solid state batteries - a promising technology that we’ll look into further next week when we discuss the future of batteries.

SADLY my fishing report kicks off with a bad start for the new year. Unfortunately the fishing has really slowed right down here in the Wangaratta area. The Ovens and King rivers are both very low, very dark and very warm, and the fish have all but shut down. There have been a few fish caught in dribs and drabs, but on the whole most people are reporting terrible fishing. My wife Lauretta and I fished with bait in the King River at Wangaratta a few days ago for three hours and all we caught was two turtles, which were of course released. Last week we fished the Ovens River near Peechelba and caught one small trout cod and one carp and that was it. I predict that the fishing will improve once we get some cooler weather, to take the edge off the extreme heat. In the meantime, the Murray River system is the place to head with fresh water being pushed through the system to meet downstream irrigation needs. I have had decent fishing reports from the Murray River upstream and downstream of Lake Mulwala, as well as in Lake Mul-
