Playing with fire By BELINDA HARRISON FOR Bobinawarrah-based wildlife artist, Maegan Oberhardt, the natural world and the native animals that inhabit it have always been part of her life, and now they influence her art. Maegan spent her earliest years on an Angora goat stud farm in rural Queensland where chickens and horses lived alongside native wildlife species. “Growing up surrounded by animals taught me to appreciate the natural environment and the creatures that live there and it gave me the opportunity to study their features, individual characteristics, movement and expressions,” Maegan said. “It was easy for me to recognise the differences between individuals of the same species and when I had time, I would spend it drawing pictures of wildlife. “They became a part of who I was, so working with them now is nostalgic for me.” Maegan’s family moved a lot, finally settling in Diamond Creek, northeast of Melbourne in 2010. The constant moving and changing of schools meant that Maegan was quite young when she found herself completing her VCE at only 16 years of age. Following VCE, Maegan went to university and completed a Bachelor of Design Arts through the Academy of Design Australia. After university, Maegan tried

to work out where she fit in the job market - as Maegan said: “a career as an artist can certainly be a mixed bag once you start putting yourself out there, but the trick is to just keep going, keep improving and keep an eye out for that shiny thing in the corner of your vision.” So Maegan continued to learn and improve her technique, creating exquisite wildlife art for people to enjoy. Unfortunately, ‘city slickers’ didn’t take to it as well as Maegan had hoped. “Melbourne is known for its art scene but it is minimalistic and people want something far more emotive and shocking than another sweet koala,” Maegan explained. In 2018, friends suggested that Maegan’s art might be better suited to a rural area and introduced her to the town of Bright, which led to Maegan holding demonstration events and spending the next year commuting back and forth from Melbourne and exploring the area. “I found Benalla to be a rather spunky art spot and decided that somewhere between Benalla and Bright would be perfect to settle. “Last September I moved into an old farmhouse on acreage in Bobinawarrah and my mum moved in with me to manage my art business since her background is in brand development.”

Canine Heartworm - how does your preventative technique measure up? CANINE heartworm is a potentially serious disease, caused by a parasite that lives in the right chambers of the heart and large vessels leading to the lungs. Heartworm is transmitted from animal to animal by infected mosquitoes which are infected by biting a dog which has circulating “microfilariae”, a microscopic larval form. This means your dog does not need to come into contact with other dogs to become infected. The infection rate in Wangaratta is relatively low, but not completely absent. We would like all pet owners to think about the risk and make an informed decision about whether they wish to embark on a prevention programme. There are multiple heartworm preventatives currently on the market, including monthly tablets (Heartgard chewables, Nexgard spectra, Exelpet), monthly top spots (Advocate, Revolution) and annual injection (Proheart SR 12). The intestinal wormer, Milbemycin,
with Ellie Merritt, Warby St Veterinary Hospital also prevents heartworm but only if given every month. It is important to remember that monthly preventatives only protect your dog if you remember to give them. Studies have shown that 40% of positive heartworm cases were dogs on monthly heartworm preventatives and nearly six out of 10 dog owners didn’t stick with the monthly chewable year round or skipped doses, meaning their pet was not protected. Symptoms depend on the number of heartworms infecting the dog. They can be symptom-free if there is only a light load. The worms can cause clots to form which can block other vessels. More serious infections can cause right-sided heart failure and, in a worst case scenario, can cause sudden death.

with Foundation for National Parks and Wildlife ◆ ENTICING: Wattles have a strong smell which attracts birds, bees, wasps and beetles.
Acaias (Wattles) in your garden ACACIAS, or Wattles, grow all over Australia - there are over 1000 known species. The Golden Wattle, Acacia pycnantha, is the Australian national floral emblem and our national colours, green and gold, come from the flowers and leaves of this popular tree. They have very small flowers that occur in clusters to make their characteristic bright yellow display. Some have paler coloured flowers and one species, Acacia purpureapetala, has purple flowers. Most species begin to flower in late winter but the huge variety means there is usually a wattle flowering at any time of the year. After a bushfire, acacias are often the first plants to recover and revegetate the area. Ants tend to store acacia seeds underground which may help to explain why the seeds germinate so quickly following a fire - they are already in the soil waiting for the right conditions.
Wattles have a strong smell which attracts birds, bees, wasps and beetles. They are a great habitat for small birds, providing shelter, perching and nesting sites, and attracting insects for them to eat. Different species attract different birds and those that love wattles include crested pigeons, rufous whistlers, grey shrike-thrushes, white winged trillers, thornbills, silvereyes, wrens and singing honey eaters. Many acacias produce “galls”; lumps or malformations that occur as a result of insects, viruses, worms, bacteria or physical damage. When caused by an insect laying eggs, they attract galahs and rosellas who will tear it open to eat the insects. Dense growths of acacias give sugar gliders and squirrel gliders a place to live and they also feed on the insects that are attracted to the flowers. The Leadbeaters possum feeds on the gum of Silver Wattle and Hickory Wattle.

Wattle seeds are eaten by parrots and pigeons and Black Cockatoos and Gang Gangs tear open the bark to search for grubs in the wood of older wattle trees. Wattle seeds are well known bush foods and a traditional food source for aboriginal communities. Not all acacia varieties have edible seeds so if you want to have a go at making wattle damper or wattle seed cake, its best to buy the seeds from a supplier. Did you know? Acacias are actually legumes - they can acquire nitrogen directly from the atmosphere with the aid of soil bacteria (Rhizobium sp) through nodules on the roots of the plant. Ants and acacias have a close relationship. The seeds are coated in an oily fleshy outgrowth called an aril. Ants take the whole seed back to their nests where they eat only the aril and the seed remains safely stored underground ready for germination.

While there may well be a physiological explanation for it, like children who tend to have a sweeter tooth earlier in life, perhaps it’s simply that those wines taste familiar, like other drinks we enjoy. As we listen, taste and learn more about wine, we begin to explore and enjoy beyond the sensation of sweet, understanding better the way all the senses contribute to the experience and avour. This Day in History, 1867 THE Co-operative movement, which had begun in the industrial areas of England, blossomed in the North East on this day in 1867, when the doors of the Beechworth Co-op Bakery opened. The society was determined to do something about the high price of bread in the town, and an organisation had been formed, with Robert Nelson as secretary. When the shop opened, in premises in Camp Street next to the Yorkshire Hotel, all the bread was sold, at 6d for a four pound loaf.
Frizzled, frazzled, frantic or fried NO-ONE is a stranger to stress. A little stress is healthy; it challenges you and makes you stronger. The body’s stress response is designed to help you survive stressful situations, but at the moment it feels like there is no off time. Our busy, modern lives, the sources of stress are different but the body’s response is the same. Stresses are not always easy to resolve, meaning that your stress response is constantly activated. Stress without adequate recovery can substantially affect your energy levels, resulting in signiďŹ cant fatigue. If this situation is not addressed, feeling tired and stressed may become your ‘normal’ day to day existence. The average adult juggles a multitude of commitments and the list continues to grow, leaving little time for relaxation. Your brain is the ďŹ rst organ that senses stress. It responds by sending messages to the adrenal glands which release corti-
sol to help you deal with the stress. When stress becomes chronic, the brain may seek to self-regulate itself by toning down these signals as a protective mechanism. This can result in the sort of low energy commonly seen in chronic fatigue. Stress is known to be an underlying factor behind many conditions, with severe fatigue being one of the most debilitating. Lifestyle Tips to Stay Ahead of Stress The following tips can help you deal with stress and recharge your batteries: t &YFSDJTF Being active supports energy production and releases feel-good endorphins and improves your overall health and wellbeing. t .FEJUBUJPO NJOEGVMOFTT :PHB This practice helps calm an overactive mind and assists you in ďŹ nding peace. t /BUVSF Spending time in nature allows you to relax and has the beneďŹ ts green plants and natural foliage can provide - improved mood and an increased sense of calm. t 4UBZ TPDJBM Interacting with fam-

It’s from her studio in Bobinawarrah that Maegan is perfecting a technique she discovered during her university days when drawing hyper-realistic animals wasn’t very ‘conceptual’ and she needed to expand her visual library. Using the candle as a base, Maegan developed, experimented, burnt, destroyed, and learned how to use a flame to craft hyper-realistic animal images. “Once while working on a bison portrait, I nearly burned a hole through the nose - yikes,” she laughed. “I have now refined my technique and, using watercolour paper, I sketch the subject and begin layering carbon soot, just like paint, onto the sketch.” “I then remove layers by
etching with various tools to render the shapes and details. “A very similar technique used by Salvador Dali in the 1930s was ‘fumage’ but although the soot is stable, it is delicate. “Once I have completed a piece (which can take around four weeks for an A1 size), I protect it behind glass. “I like to say look with your eyes, not your hands!” Maegan dubbed the technique ‘Painting with Fire’, believing it to be a much more descriptive way to describe the process and although she has experimented with adding watercolour or metallic highlights, she prefers to just use the soot as it’s ‘more challenging’. “I want to give each animal a voice and be heard. I’m us-
ing man-made fire on a byproduct of trees which represents man vs nature and the animal life caught in-between - literally carved out of our carbon footprint.” In November 2019, Maegan became a resident artist at the Morpeth Gallery in NSW and was featured for an event. She is also a guest artist at Aarwun Gallery in the ACT and their exhibition entitled ‘A Hommage’, which has been moved online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, through to the end of April. Locally, Maegan’s work can be found at the Milawa Post Office (open) and the Benalla Art Gallery Shop (which is currently closed). “The Milawa Post Office is a fantastic supporter of local artists and stocks a number of
my limited edition prints and greeting cards.” The current pandemic lockdown has denied Maegan the opportunity to showcase her work at a Bright venue event or the demonstrations she had scheduled over the next few months but she has plans to get back out there when the pandemic is over. “I would love to meet local wildlife carers and share their stories and am open to exhibition opportunities and local demonstrations or workshops.” For now, anyone who’d like to peruse Maegan’s artwork, order limited edition prints, keep up to date with her latest news or learn more about the animals she features, should visit https://www.maeganoberhardt.com/.

GONE FISHING
TECH & SCIENCE
◆ WHERE IT BEGAN: The lure that kick started my addiction to lure casting for Murray cod, a timber Predator lure made here in Wangaratta.
Lucky lure leads to lifelong love DUE to our inability to go fishing, I have decided that this week I will share a short story. It was around the mid 1990s, I was trolling for Murray cod with my dad in the Ovens River. We launched the boat from the Templeton Street boat ramp in Wangaratta and went downstream a few kilometres, way down past Wangaratta’s outskirts, at the time. We turned around and began trolling our lures slowly as we made our way back upstream towards the car, Dad’s burgundy HQ Holden station wagon. They were not collectors’ items back then, they were little more than 20 years old. The equivalent of a 2000 model Commodore these days, of which there are plenty on the roads, most with epic sound systems worth more money than the car. As we trolled back upstream past what is now known as Cambridge Drive my dad got snagged and we had to stop. I reeled my line in, and while I was actually retrieving the lure a fish hit it. I couldn’t be-

Ancient Roman religion and gods with Rob Alexander WANGARATTA lieve it. I had only ever caught them trolling, not while actually reeling the lure in. As Dad juggled controlling the boat, holding his fishing rod and working the lure retriever, rather than help him out I decided to cast my lure a few times first in case the fish came back. Bang...I hooked up, and caught my very first Murray cod on a cast lure. A lovely 60cm Ovens River Murray cod. I had only caught cod trolling, this was my first cast and retrieve Murray cod, and I still have the lure to this day. It is an original timber crafted Predator lure, made here in Wangaratta by Dave Brauman.
ANCIENT Rome had a long and interesting religious history. In the earliest of days, Roman religion was animistic, meaning that people believed that spirits inhabited nearly everything, people included, and was largely practiced by the tribes that would form the Roman Empire. Afterward, a triad of gods were added to the spirits, those being Mars - the god of war, Quirinus - the deified founder of Rome, and Jupiter, who was worshipped as the supreme god. Due to Etruscan influence, the Roman triad changed to Jupiter, Juno - Jupiter’s wife, and Minerva, their daughter. Ancient Grecian influence saw Rome adopt many of their gods also, and the concept of gods as a whole became more anthropomorphic. Instead of spiritual entities, the gods took on the likeness of humanity, especially as it pertained to human emotion and thought processes.
Concepts such as love and hate soon gained deities that represented them, and a believer might have prayed or sought the guidance of the gods when it came to dealing with emotional situations, rather than simply beseeching the gods for physical matters such as rain for crops. Interestingly, individual expression of belief was not considered overly important amongst Roman citizens. Cities had their own rituals and their own patron deities, and while many of the gods were worshipped outside of a given city, it wasn’t necessarily universal worship, nor did each city give each god the same level of prominence. In many ways, Rome adhered to a form of ‘Freedom of Religion’, a precept that is a cornerstone of modern democracy in the west, and was very unusual for the time. Because of this, when Rome conquered different lands and countries, they would often adopt and assimilate
gods and practices of those lands, instead of simply stamping them out. (In fact, you may be surprised to hear that the Christmas tree itself is actually a pagan practice stemming from Saturnalia, a celebration of the winter solstice, and that the celebration of the birth of Jesus was amalgamated into this festival in order to bridge the gap of the various faiths and cultures the Roman Empire presided over). Historians believe that this acceptance of differing faiths was a significant factor in the success of the empire. After all, it may be a slower process, but amalgamating different cultures and practices is far easier than attempting to convert by the sword, and the Romans were nothing if not pragmatic. But with the rise of Christianity, and the cementing of Christian doctrine by the Council of Nicea in 325 A.D. the new faith slowly replaced the old gods over time, and the rest, as they say, is history.
