Back to the future By WILLSON MACK
CHRIS Mitchell is a familiar name and face to many people in the North East. In his time as a journalist Chris has worked for many different newspapers and news organisations, including the Herald Sun in Melbourne. He grew up on a farm near Benalla and completed his year 11 and 12 studies at Galen Catholic College before moving to Bathurst to study. “Moving eight hours away from family and friends for university was hard,” Chris said. “I hated doing university there so moved back home after a year of studying.” The move back home was when Chris secured a job as a cadet sports journalist at the Wangaratta Chronicle. Under the guidance of Shane Douthie, Jeff Zeuschnner and Phil Nolan, Chris flourished. “I loved working at the Chronicle,” Chris said. “The people working there were awesome. “I mainly did the sports side of things, but I was encouraged to do a bit of general too which was great for my development.” Four years post his work at the Wangaratta Chronicle was when Chris’ breakthrough occurred. He landed a casual job at the Herald Sun before being offered a full-time job at the premier newspaper a year later.

Ultrasounds for animals ULTRASOUND is a common technology used in human medicine. It also sees widespread use in veterinary medicine as well. There are many situations where it can be employed either rapidly in emergencies or in a more measured examination looking for a diagnosis in complex medical cases. The benefit of ultrasound is that it is non-invasive and usually can be used with the patient conscious or lightly sedated. It has replaced exploratory surgery in some cases or allows us to go into an abdominal surgery with a lot more information in hand. Ultrasound is used in pregnancy diagnosis in many species. Like in people you can get an idea of whether an animal is pregnant, whether they are carrying twins (or more) and how the foetuses look like they are developing. It is used extensively in horse breeding where mares need to be pre-
with Ellie Merritt, Warby St Veterinary Hospital pared to be transported to stallions for breeding at the absolute right moment in their reproductive cycle. In emergency situations, the ultrasound can be used to look for bleeding or fluid accumulation in the chest or abdominal cavities. There are accepted emergency “quick” ultrasound protocols looking rapidly for problems after traumatic accidents like when an animal is hit by a car. In complex medical cases the ultrasound is used to examine the organs of the abdomen or chest. It can look for problems in the bladder, liver, stomach, intestines, kidneys, pancreas, heart and many more places. It is an invaluable tool for noninvasive diagnosis in many medical situations.

◆ WHAT PLANT IS THAT: After taking six years to establish, this gorgeous Hakea Orthorrhyncha (Bird-beak Hakea) emerges proudly full of flowers and seed capsules every winter. PHOTO: Helen Van Riet
Hakea Orthorrhyncha IN March, at the end of the hot, dry summer, the first gorgeous pink pincushions of Hakea laurina burst forth. Four months on, it continues to flower, while a succession of other hakeas brighten our winter garden. The amazing variety and beauty of this interesting genus continues to intrigue me. The vast concentration of hakea species occur in southwest Western Australia. They also occur naturally in all states, including Tasmania. All hakeas have evolved to regenerate after fire. All bear bivalve seed follicles which are held tightly closed on the plant until burnt by a hot fire or when the plant dies. They then open to expel two winged seeds. This method of regeneration is so successful, that in some areas around Sydney, where wildfires have occurred too frequently, hakeas have formed almost impenetra-
ble forests at the expense of other species which are less adaptable. Many species are indigenous to desert areas. Leaf-forms are needlelike, having evolved to withstand extreme heat and dryness. Despite sparse foliage, these dryland-adapted plants are glorious in full bloom. Hakeas are not widely cultivated, perhaps because the closely related genus Grevillea is more widely known. To the untrained eye, the flowers of both are not remarkably different, yet examination of the seed capsules distinguishes these two species. Over the years I have tried to establish Australian plant gardens in various locations on soils ranging from light to heavy, well-drained to swampy. There have been disasters, but I have endeavoured to learn from my mistakes, and hakeas have become a favoured species. They are hardy. Paul Kennedy,

leader of the Hakea Study Group, has some succinct advice for those establishing an Australian Plants Garden. “If in doubt, plant a Hakea.” Some Hakeas eg H. orthorrhyncha (pronounced ortho-rinka) have a woody lignotuber, similar to a mallee root, which is capable of reshooting after fire. Its name derives from the Greek ortho - straight, and rhynchos - beak, referring to the long, straight beak on the seed capsules. I planted a H. orthorrhyncha about 12 years ago. It took six years to establish and now, every winter profuse bright red delicate blooms emerge in clusters from old wood and right up to the growing tips. Although classified as a needle hakea, it is not prickly. Winter is the perfect time for planting this tough, intriguing and beautiful Bird-beak Hakea. Plants of this well-known Hakea species are available commercially.

De Bortoli Family Winemakers Rutherglen Estate Durif 2018 WHEN it comes to gardening it can sometimes take a lot of trial and error before realising that it pays to get things right from the start. Just like painting a wall, not many people enjoy the preparation and it’s tempting to skip the early stages and just bung the colour on, but you inevitably end up with a pretty ordinary result. Years of simply buying things I liked and sticking them in the ground, expecting them to ourish, has taught me that unless you prepare the ground ďŹ rst it’s going to be a waste of time and money. And now that it’s paying dividends I’m actually enjoying making compost, growing worms and seeing plants happy and thriving in their new home. No wonder vignerons bang on about terroir - the fancy way of saying the soil, position and climate. De Bortoli’s Rutherglen Estate Durif is grown in Shelley’s vineyards where it thrives in a mix of gravel, clay and alluvial soil and the vines get to bask in the dry summer sun. The dark, inky wine has distinctive aromas of blackberry and plum and almost leathery spice. Those dark fruits and also

chocolate are there in the avour but it’s also quite toasty and savoury, thanks to spending a year in French and American oak barrels. The ďŹ rm, dry ďŹ nish makes this wine worth lingering over, perhaps after dinner or with some aged cheese and crusty bread. I’m with the vines - outside is my preferred position and when fed and well hydrated I’m deďŹ nitely at my best. HOW MUCH PER BOTTLE? About $24.
This Day in History - 1942 ON this day in 1942, Wangaratta was surrounded by water. Old timers were comparing it to 1917, the greatest flood since 1870. Marks left by the 1917 flood were compared with the flood of 1942. Billy Edwards, the blacksmith, had marked a tree on the bank of the Ovens River near his shop at the height of the 1917 flood, but found the flood of ‘42 not quite as high. However, at Markwood, the height of the 1917 flood was equalled at one or two places.
with Naturopath Belinda McPherson (BHSCI. NATUROPATHY) ◆ NOT SUPER HARD: Eating healthy doesn’t necessarily mean you have to hunt high and low for the latest ‘superfood’.
Health food is easy - and not so expensive IN clinic we are ďŹ nding many patients are overwhelmed about what to eat and how, or if, or when to apply the latest ‘superfoods’. As a result, there seems to be an awful lot of ‘superfoods’ just sitting around in a lot of pantries - unopened, half eaten, trialled and forgotten! Does this sound like you? Are you overwhelmed by all the latest ‘superfoods’? Have friends or your naturopath given some great sounding diet advice that you want to take, but instead you walked away feeling too tired or
overwhelmed to try that new recipe? Or do you come into your appointment wanting to make a healthy change, but realising you just don’t have the time or skills to create a new menu? Whilst we love the concept of food as medicine, at our clinic we are less into expensive trendy fashion foods than others. We simply like to ramp up our recipes with medicinal herbs and spices and combine wholefoods that you will ďŹ nd easily in your supermarket or health food shop in traditionally nourishing ways. Over the winter months we like
the idea of including food like spiced porridge, spiced hot chocolate or stewed fruit with herbs and spices, lentil dahl or vegetarian shiitake mushroom broth or homemade chicken broth and vegetables. And who could forget curries and slow braised meat or vegetarian based meals? If you need help getting warming, anti-inammatory and immune boosting herbs into your everyday diet then follow us on social media or come in for an appointment so we can discuss this speciďŹ cally for you and your needs.

“Working at such a big company was an eye opener,” Chris said. “When I first got there, I was a sub-editor, I didn’t even know what a sub-editor was so that was a challenge in itself. “Eventually I started to write a lot more which was when I started to work with the likes of Mike Sheehan, Mark Robinson and Damien Barrett, which was incredible. “Working the 4pm to midnight shifts was a challenge though which is why I ended up moving back home. “I’m extremely grateful for my time there though, I learnt so much and it probably made me as a journalist.” Chris and his wife moved back home briefly before making a huge decision to move half way across the world for a year. “I came back home and got a job at the Border Mail which was awesome,” Chris said.
“I worked there for a bit and then my wife and I moved to Europe for a year. “We bought a camper van and travelled around Europe for a year; we did the Camino Pilgrimage between France and Spain which was awesome. “It was on our way home at a stop-over in Thailand that I heard I landed my first TV gig at Prime7 as a news reporter under Paul Terry.” Despite the job being tough at first, Chris said his background working at newspapers for was a big help. “The news reporting was a pretty tough gig,” he said. “Going to confronting accidents was hard; I was working when that accident at the paper mill in Albury happened and that was one of the hardest things I’ve done. “And then doing live crosses where you can’t stuff up adds another dimension on top.” Chris played and captained the former

Benalla soccer team that used to play in the Albury Wodonga Football Association before moving to Myrtleford in his later years of playing. “The team I was a part of at Myrtleford probably kick started their dominant years,” Chris said. “We were the best team but didn’t win a title but we came close on a few occasions.” The young but accomplished journalist is now a stay at home dad with baby daughter Ruby, as well as working for Murray United FC as the skill acquisition program coach. “Soccer has been a love of mine since I was a kid so to be involved in the development of young soccer players now is really cool,” he said. “Giving back to a sport that has given me many opportunities is amazing. “Hopefully I can be a good role model to the 7-12 year old kids I coach during my time at Murray United and develop them to the best of their ability.”

Central Hume Primary Care Partnership has been improving the health and wellbeing of people in the Alpine, Benalla, Mansfield and Wangaratta council areas for 20 years. Working collaboratively to reduce isolation that individuals in regional communities experience and improving the integration of the services supporting them. Without the Central Hume Primary Care Partnership, many of these service organisations would work alone, losing the benefits of extended networks and collaboration on multiple complex health and wellbeing issues, reducing the impact of their resources and potentially duplicating services. We continue to drive real improvements in health and wellbeing outcomes that are meaningful for our communities. For further information see our website

Job search help for hospitality and retail workers during COVID-19 IF you are a retail or hospitality worker currently looking for work, you might need to consider other occupations or industries to ďŹ nd available jobs. The good news is that many of your existing skills are directly applicable to jobs that are available right now. How do you translate your skills to the available jobs? There is a range of job opportunities currently available. The key to ďŹ nding a new role is to understand how your skills and experience can transfer from your current role to other jobs. Here are four steps to understanding your transferable skills to link with current job opportunities. Step 1: Do a skills stocktake The ďŹ rst step is to understand your technical and
employability skills. You can do this by completing the relevant checklists for hospitality or retail workers at https:// www.jobjumpstart.gov.au/. These checklists aim to help you identify the broad range of skills you have built over your working life. You can use this information to articulate your value to other employers in a language they will understand. Step 2: Find out what jobs you could do The next step is to understand how your existing skills match available jobs. Hospitality and retail workers often have the skills needed for these in-demand jobs: checkout operators and shelf ďŹ llers, carers, support workers and orderlies, call or contact centre operators, couriers and truck drivers, commercial
cleaners, storepersons and stock clerks, food trade and factory workers, and security officers and guards. Step 3: Understand how employers recruit Employers use a range of recruitment methods to ďŹ nd the workers they need. Common methods include: t $PNQBOZ XFCTJUFT PG ten used to recruit checkout operators and shelf ďŹ llers. t 4PDJBM NFEJB PGUFO VTFE to recruit pharmacy sales assistants. t 0OMJOF KPC CPBSET PGUFO used to recruit couriers, truck drivers and storepersons. t 3FDSVJUNFOU FNQMPZNFOU agencies - often used to recruit couriers and truck drivers. t 8PSE PG NPVUI PGUFO VTFE to recruit couriers, truck drivers and checkout operators.

SNOW REPORT
nemedia.com.au
THIS is part of a regular series featuring recipes that have become popular during the COVID-19 lockdown. This recipe comes from Barb Griffiths from Whorouly. These savoury biscuits are made from seeds and water only; the mucilaginous nature of the chia and linseed binding the other seeds.
◆ IT’S HERE: A welcome view at Dingo Dell last Friday morning after snowfall the night before.
Slip sliding away AND they’re off. After delays to the start of the season, Mt Hotham and Falls Creek resorts have welcomed people back to the slopes for the 2020 ski season, with much of the accommodation already booked out for a number of weekends. With the arrival of the school holidays, it’s expected that more visitors from outside the Alpine Shire will be in attendance and while that’s a welcome relief for business owners, people are reminded that they need to adhere to all the COVID operating plans in place. Alpine Shire mayor, Peter Roper, reiterated the message. “Now more than ever, it’s essential for our community and visitors to support each other, practice good hygiene, social distancing habits, and as always, be kind,” he said. “The reality is our communities actually need tourism, but we don’t need COVID-19.” At Dinner Plain, they’ve been utilising the positive snowmaking conditions and the natural snow falls over the past couple of weeks to build a snow base for tobogganing at Cobungra Platter. Once open, it will be Australia’s largest toboggan slope at 75m long and 40m wide and
will operate throughout the snow season. Over at Mt Buffalo, they received a good dumping of snow last week, with Dingo Dell blanketed in white when those on the mountain woke up. Chains are required to be carried now and you will be advised if they need to be fitted and remember to continue to social distance, sanitise and stay safe. At Mt Buller more terrain became available to skiers from last Sunday with Skyline and Abom express opening, while Bourke Street has a good cover. The forecast is for a mainly fine week with good snowmaking conditions.
Curry seeded crackers I MADE these recently to accompany the hummus that I always make for my grandchildren when they visit. My husband and I now prefer these to other purchased dry biscuits. They have a long shelf life as you spread the mixture very thinly and, as they bake for an hour, are very dry and thus almost non perishable.

Method Place all the ingredients and 1½ cups warm water in a heatproof bowl and stir until well combined. Leave to stand at room temperature, stirring occasionally for 20 minutes or until the mixture thickens and looks gel-like. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 160C (140 fan forced) and line two large baking trays with baking paper. Spread the seed mixture thinly and evenly over the prepared trays, making sure there are no gaps. Bake for one hour, swapping the trays halfway through baking, until crisp and light golden. Cool completely on the trays, then snap into rough pieces to serve.
