9 - 15 January, 2019 ◆ GUIDING YOUNG MINDS: Andrea Wearne has taught people of all ages piano in the North East for almost 30 years. PHOTO: Kylie Wilson

By KYLIE WILSON RAISED in the midst of a musical family, there was never any doubt that Andrea Wearne would live a life shaped by the magic of melody. Piano melodies of all kinds regularly flow from the tranquil music room at the front of her Wangaratta home, where she often gives lessons. She recalls that most of her siblings could sing and play an instrument, and for those in her family, music “was as natural as playing hopscotch” and a way to amuse themselves. “There was a fairly strong culture of music in our house,” Andrea said. Her childhood love of music, and piano in particular, quickly grew into something she wanted to pass on and teach to others. She is a familiar face to local music lovers, having spent almost three decades teaching piano in the Wangaratta and King Valley area, predominantly with children but also with teenagers and adults. This has included teaching students at several schools in the area, and Andrea said she has felt privileged to be able to help shape many young minds over the years.

Payment times biggest cause of disputes for small business NEW research has found that small businesses in Australia are paying more than $130,000 to resolve a dispute through formal pathways; double the cost of a decade ago. Releasing the results of the Access to Justice Inquiry (Phase I) research recently, the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman, Kate Carnell, said payment times and terms remain the biggest cause of disputes. “We surveyed 1600 small businesses across Australia and found time and cost are the most significant factors when determining how far to pursue resolution of a dispute,” Ms Carnell said. “Our research shows 22 per cent of small businesses surveyed had been involved in a serious dispute in the last five years. "Nine out of 10 were business-to-business disputes and one in 20 were business-togovernment. “Three out of five sought legal advice from a lawyer.

"At this point, the small business owner has to decide whether to pursue the dispute, as the expected costs of further action most often outweigh the potential gain. "Half of those surveyed considered the amount of time and effort required was unreasonable. “We found one third of disputes are not escalated through a formal process; instead the small business owner sought to resolve it by speaking with the other party and coming to an agreement. “The cost of disputes to small businesses is far reaching. “There can be significant financial loss; existing business relationships become strained; it is a time-consuming process and reputations can be seriously damaged. “If the direct approach has failed, we recommend small businesses consult your state Small Business Commissioner or our office.” For more information see www.asbfeo.gov.au.

with Helen van Riet AUSTRALIAN PLANTS SOCIETY (VIC) ◆ VIBRANT: Brachychiton populneus x acerifolius (in full bloom at Park Lane Nursery, Wangaratta).

The Illawarra flame tree and its cousins EARLY summer this year has been an exceptionally good year for a spectacular flowering of Illawarra Flame Trees. In Victoria, we’re accustomed to deciduous trees dropping their foliage in autumn (aptly named ‘Fall’ in USA) and bursting into leaf in the warmth of spring. In a previous article I wrote about the humble Kurrajong, which is easily grown from seed and locally common. This article focuses on a spectacular Queensland cousin - the Illawarra Flame tree - Brachychiton acerifolius [Brachychiton - from Greek, brachys, short and chiton, a tunic, a reference to the boat-shaped capsule containing the seed, and acerifolius - having foliage like the genus Acer (maple)].

The Illawarra Flame Tree is semideciduous, shedding some or all of its glossy dark green leaves in late spring. Leaf-fall is followed by a profusion of bell-shaped waxy flowers in shades of pink or red. In a ‘good year’ the whole tree may be covered in flowers. The persistent profuse dark brown fruits are leathery, containing many corn-like seeds, separated by fine hairs. Seed pods are useful for craft projects.* Indigenous people used the inner bark to make twine and fishing lines and fishing nets. From seed, the Illawarra Flame Tree may take up to eight years to flower. Grafted plants will flower much earlier than those grown from seed.

Brachychiton hybrids are available as grafted plants. A stunner is B. Jerilderie Red [Brachychiton populneus x acerifolius]. Mature material from good flowering forms is used to graft desirable forms onto seedling stock of B.acerifolius or B.populneus. B. acerifolius is a succulent, and develops a lovely straight, smooth, green trunk. It is an excellent shade tree. In cultivation in cooler areas, it may reach up to 10 metres. It thrives in full sun, is suitable for most soils and tolerates drought and light frost. *CAUTION: The seed-pod hairs can irritate the skin & nasal passages. Be careful when handling any open seeds pods.

FEATURE STORY

Dangers to pets during summer holiday season WHEN the festive season and summer holidays roll around it is important to keep in mind the potential dangers that pose a risk to the health of our pets. Keep in mind these dangers to pets over the silly season: Chocolate Whilst chocolate is fine for us to enjoy (in moderation of course), dogs are very sensitive to the chemicals in chocolate. The clinical signs associated with chocolate toxicity in dogs can include agitation and tremors progressing to seizures. Onions and garlic They are a staple ingredient around Christmas time, they are dangerous for pets causing damage to red blood cells which can result in severe anaemia. Heatstroke Instead of sweating, dogs pant to regulate their temperature so are more prone to heatstroke. Signs of heat stroke can include agitation and excessive panting, but can also progress to collapse. Grapes and sultanas Grapes, raisins and sultanas can be toxic to some dogs,

with FREYA WILLIAMS, VETERINARIAN

grapes cause the kidneys to stop working which can be life threatening. Macadamia nuts Macadamia nuts are toxic to dogs and cause hind limb lameness, pain and weakness. They can also cause intestinal blockages if swollen whole. Christmas and other festive decorations Dogs and particularly cats love playing with Christmas decorations. Smaller Christmas decorations can sometimes be swallowed and cause a serious intestinal obstruction that can require surgery. Fatty foods During the silly season, pets fed table scraps such as barbecue meat or other fatty foods can cause serious stomach upsets or lead to more serious illness such as pancreatitis. Major signs of pancreatitis are lethargy, poor appetite, abdominal pain, vomiting and fever.

VET CORNER IT’S a bit early for Easter, but how would you like to add a real bunny to the family? The Wangaratta RSPCA shelte currently has a male and female (pictured) rabbit up for adoption. To see more animals up for adoption visit the shelter in Connell Street or phone (03) 5722 2874.

◆ IN TUNE: Alice Rendell from Glenrowan Primary School is among the countless children Andrea Wearne has taught during her time as a piano teacher.

Andrea shares keys to learning Andrea has a firm belief in the positive impact of learning music on not only musical ability, but also on education as a whole, and on personal development. While she has taught people of all ages, she finds the most receptive students are in their early primary school years. “Teaching the piano’s been very special,” she said, delighted to see her students learn and grow over the years, whether they embraced music and performance in their career plans or not. These have ranged from a recent high school graduate going on to study education and majoring in music, to siblings she has taught studying engineering, and more. “It’s not necessarily about ending up being a musician,” Andrea said, describing the process of building musical skills as being like gradually putting together a puzzle.

“I’m very motivated by the desire to cultivate music in children. “It just becomes a natural part of their education., and it teaches them resilience and to stay focused. “It’s very motivating to see the progress of a good student. “The amount of detail that can go into reading music can be an art.” Andrea said she has seen musical education help a range of students with a range of issues, with skills learned in music encouraging “plasticity of the mind”, and helping students progress with other educational subjects such as mathematics. She noted that she had also seen music education benefit children trying to improve their coordination, or who are living with learning difficulties such as dyslexia. She is also passionate about sharing the love of music as a social outlet, saying it has a particularly positive

affect on teenage students, who can spend time playing music they love with and for their friends. “It’s another avenue of social entertainment that builds a feeling of togetherness and camaraderie,” Andrea said. “It’s really lovely to watch. “I just love seeing their joy.” Andrea believes music is great for helping people be mindful and “in the moment”, and helping ease anxieties and worries. She has taught, learned and played countless melodies over the years, but she said among her favourites is Moonlight Sonata – a meaningful song that brings back memories of several of her family members – as well as many classical and popular pieces. In the end, she said, music is about “cultivating joy and friendship.” Anyone interested in learning more about music can talk to Andrea on 0448 196419.

Chad caught his first Murray cod on a surface lure, as well as his biggest, a 72cm Murray cod caught on a diving lure earlier in the day, both in the Wangaratta region.

Red hot cod fishing still some red hot fishing to be found. The Ovens River has fixed very well for Murray cod with the King, Kiewa and Broken rivers also providing great fishing. Lake Hume has been producing quite a few redfin as well as a few yellowbelly. Boat anglers have been getting the best results with some quite decent sized fish being caught. Shore based anglers have had a lot of fun catching very small redfin on a variety of lures including small soft

plastics, bladed spinners and small minnow lures. Trout fishermen have been doing it quite tough with few reports from the region. This is possibly attributed to the recent hot weather. Trout are a cold water species and can slow right down during the heat of summer. I have had a couple of reports of OK trout fishing in the Ovens River upstream of Bright as well as the West Kiewa River high up in the hills.

LAST WEEK’S SOLUTION

WELCOME to 2019, a year full of monster fish and big smiles for many anglers I am sure. Over the holiday period keen anglers travelled to North East Victoria from all parts of Australia to cash in on the fantastic fishing that was on offer. Of particular interest to many was the great Murray cod fishing. December rainfall caused waterways to rise and fall, and be dirty and clear. Unstable conditions led to inconsistent fishing, however there was

Self care: what you need to know SELF care isn’t just about luxury bath bombs and facials, booking a holiday or taking four days away from your commitments or family. Sometimes, it’s about going to bed at 8pm, saying no to something that you didn’t really want to do, and not feeling guilty about it or forgiving yourself for not meeting your very high standards (or someone else’s). Self care is just stopping and breathing and letting the moment sink in, not writing a shopping list in your head while doing other things. Self care is deciding to eat a nourishing meal slowly with family or friends.

Swenrick build Victoria wide

Self care can be as simple (or difficult) as letting go of the excuses to change and making time to exercise, eat well, unplug and connect. Self care is not always a luxury, but a means for survival. Some self care strategies: - Early to bed: requires some strategy, maybe asking for help to do all the jobs before bed time, giving up ideal clean standards, leaving work early or having a very simple dinner. You can’t have everything, but you can have sleep if you choose it. - Saying NO: This is about making a choice, instead of feeling obliged or resentful. It’s always your choice. Next

time someone asks you to do something, stop and think before committing. Ask for time to ‘check your diary’ to make sure it fits, then you won’t let anyone down or overcommit. When you say YES to something, be sure to really turn up and be part of it. If you say NO, do so freely and ditch the guilt. Use the time to do what you want or need to do. - Nourishing meals: don’t have to be complicated. In fact some of our most enjoyable, healthiest ones are ready in five mins or in one pot. Use the time saved in meal prep to eat slowly and chat. Nourishment comes from how you digest as well as what you put in.

FOOD TALK

Amulet Vineyard Sparkling Sangiovese CHRISTMAS and New Year may technically relate to just two days of the year, but the holiday season and the events that come with it can start as early as November and extend all the way until the end of January. By the time we’ve had an annual get together with colleagues, friends and extended family members, we’ve often travelled far and wide and exchanged greetings and gifts well after the Boxing Day test is over. It’s lucky the decorations are still up, so we can pretend it’s still last year. I’ve no problem continuing celebrations if it means more turkey and duck with a bottle of sparkling red like Amulet Vineyard’s Sparkling Sangiovese. Winemaker Ben Clifton says it’s Christmas in a bottle, and being Sangiovese, it’s a light to medium bodied

with Anita McPherson style rather than a heavier, more alcoholic reds around, with a balance of fruit flavour and acidity. Indeed, the savoury edge makes it ideal drinking with poultry and a wide range of seasonal fare. It has a dark purple colour with a pink tinged froth and a mild, lightly cherry bouquet. There’s a delicious earthy quality in the flavour, adding an edge to the cherry and berry fruit, before the drier finish. It’s also impressive to take and share with others, even if that means enjoying alongside turkey sandwiches or cold cuts. I think I could get used to this extended Christmas. This recipe, which makes four serves, is courtesy of Calypso Mango, and more recipes like this can be found at calypsomango. com.au Method Cut the mango cheeks from the fruit. Cut a criss-cross pattern in the flesh of the cheek, being careful not to cut through the skin. Holding the cheek with the criss-cross pattern up, gently push

the skin upwards, as if you were turning the cheek inside out. Position in the centre of board or serving plate. Cut the apple into thick rounds and position as the head. Brush with a little lemon juice to prevent it from browning. Cut the banana into rounds, brush with lemon and position over the apple then top with blueberries for the eyes. Cut the peach into thick wedges and position as arms. Cut the beaks, crown, legs and feet from the carrot and place into position.

TECH & SCIENCE

with Chris Febvre NEM GRAPHIC ARTIST cfebvre@nemedia.com.au ◆ THE RACE FOR 5G: 2019 will see a new race between the US and China to be the first to implement 5G networks in a bid to dominate a technology landscape littered with internet connected devices.

What technology trends could we expect to see in 2019? WE live in interesting times. The internet has been around for long enough now that the vast majority of people and businesses rely on it implicitly. Computers and/or mobile devices - once the purview of enthusiasts only - are now owned by a staggering two thirds of the population globally, and that number is set to increase to 75 per cent by 2020. And more importantly, alongside this widespread uptake of technology, the population’s general understanding of such devices is increasing rapidly, so much so that companies are no longer so shy in taking larger leaps forward in technological advancement - trusting that end users will not only confidently adapt to the new changes, they’re actually clamouring for it. This has driven companies to seek higher heights as they compete to be the top dog in a saturated market that only really wants one thing - the next big thing, whatever that looks like. And so, as we stand on the precipice of a new decade - a decade which, for me at least, always seemed like it would be the far flung future when I was growing up, the winds of change are blowing.

Given this, I thought we might look at a few of the changes we can expect to see in the coming year. Anti-Social Media Scandal after scandal, along with various large government bodies imposing restrictions on the functionality (and profitability) of social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter will ensure that these tech giant’s woe’s won’t be ending any time soon. Couple this with generation z’s lackluster enthusiasm for the platforms (yes, it’s now the uncool platform mum and dad use) and we might just be seeing the decline of these behemoths if they aren’t able to appeal to an emerging audience that is sharp enough to understand that posting every minute detail of their lives online isn’t the brightest idea ever conceived. The great 5g race: China vs the US Rivalries have begun to flair between the US and China as both race to adopt 5g technologies and reap the respective rewards in terms of market share. Thus far, the US seems to have dropped the ball and trails behind China and Korea in the planning and implementation of 5g ready networks.

Local people, local places

...immerse yourself in the region

And it’s not just about who sells the most devices between Huawei and iPhone, a leaked National Security Council document has warned that if China dominates the telecommunications network industry it “will win politically, economically, and militarily.” There are also concerns that China could use a 5g technology rollout to spy on its rivals, which prompted the Australian Government to ban Huawei from building a network on our shores. The gaming industry may hit some major turbulence Similar to social media, the gaming industry has had some major troubles in recent times. Some of the largest AAA companies share prices took a nosedive in the lead up to Christmas, thanks largely to consumer fatigue and some poor choices by companies like EA and Activision-Blizzard when it came game decisions. Blizzard rather unceremoniously dumped a mobile game in front of the hardcore PC audience of Diablo, while EA has been embroiled in customer backlash for a long time due to predatory microtransaction practices such as loot boxes.

And, most recently, Bethesda (once a company gaming fans adored) released Fallout 76 - an online only multiplayer title that was so unfinished and broken it could make Atari’s ET blush. It’s not all doom and gloom, however. While the big companies might be stuck releasing the same title year in and year out, it’s left the market wide open for innovative independent developers to prosper. Uber Air might be coming to Australia Last year Uber announced its intention to launch a pilot program for its ambitious goal of providing flying, intra city transport for either Melbourne or Sydney. Reports last year suggested that Uber would be declaring which of the two cities would be the first to test the program some time this year (fingers crossed it’s Melbourne). At the very least, we should expect to hear some exciting news about this later this year. If all goes to plan, Uber hopes to have the flying transport system up and running by 2023. These are just some of the changes we can expect to see this year, and I’ll be doing my utmost best to cover the news as it breaks. Happy new year to everyone.

Classic family story a tale for the ages CHANNEL CHAT

THIS WEEK’S TV HIGHLIGHTS: Stop Laughing…This is Serious (ABC, Wednesday, 8.30pm): The first part in a re-run of last year’s three part series charting the story of Australia’s on-screen comedy history, this episode focuses on its iconic characters. Butterfly (SBS, 9.45pm, Wednesday): Premiere of this British mini-series which centres on a young boy who wants to live life as a girl, and the complicated issues her decision evokes between the child’s separated parents. Smashhdown (9Go!, 8am, weekdays): Keeping kids away from screens is a constant battle in the holidays; at least starting them off with this sports game show will keep their thoughts on getting active.

SHOW: Little Women CHANNEL: ABC TIME: 7.30pm, Saturday with SIMONE KERWIN CHRISTMAS and New Year have passed, and now come the long, hot January days when, unless you’re by the water, you’ll be seeking relief from the air conditioner and some icy cold drinks. If you’re not into cricket, or the Big Bash screening every night is a little more than your interest can bear, this is a great time to delve into some longlength storytelling to distract yourself from the heat. Yes, ’tis the season of the

mini-series, and ABC and SBS in particular are revelling in the format, dishing out quite a few during the non-ratings/holiday period. One offering that piqued my interest was the appearance on free-to-air TV of the Little Women mini-series, which began streaming on Stan in December, 2017. The series was timed to lead into the 150th anniversary of Louisa May Alcott’s beautiful book about the lives of the

◆ THE MARCH GIRLS: If you haven’t read Little Women, or watched any previous adaptations, this mini-series screening on ABC over three Saturday nights could be your ticket to the world of the March family.

March sisters - homemaker Meg, writer Jo, wilful Amy, and delicate Beth - as they and their beloved ‘Marmee’ await the return of their father from the American Civil War. Having grown up surrounded by sisters, I devoured this book as a teenager - despite its already advanced age - and when I discovered it was the begin-

ning of a series that followed the family’s fortunes, I was hooked. While nothing beats the book, any adaptation is worth a look to relive the tale, although some are better than others. Most viewers of my vintage will probably best remember the Winona Ryder/Christian Bale movie, though I have a fondness for the 1933 (Katherine Hepburn)

and 1949 (June Allyson/Elizabeth Taylor) versions. I’m yet to see the 2018 modern re-telling, but that doesn’t interest me as much as the movie coming this year which has Harry Potter alumni Emma Watson in the cast, and draws some content from the later books,

Good Wives, Little Men, and Jo’s Boys. The mini-series screening on ABC (which started last Saturday and continues over coming weekends) has been criticised for chopping out large sections of the book, but that’s to be expected with any adaptation.
