GARDENING

IN years gone by, schoolyard bullying may have been as simple as a whispered word in the hallway, or a shove in the playground. Today, bullies have added social media to their arsenal, which can make an escape from the emotional turmoil of bullying a lot harder, and has complicated the social landscape for many of today’s youth. But schools across the North East are addressing the ever growing and evolving world of bullying with strategies to help children and adolescents cope. Beechworth Secondary College principal Dr John Hunter said his school takes a number of approaches to help control bullying and protect the emotional health of students. One of these is “restorative practice”, where victims and perpetrators sit down together and work through issues, with guidance from a teacher. Dr Hunter said there is also a discipline system in place to deal with repeat offenders. “By far, bullying is a really difficult area for schools to manage,” he said, adding that cyberbullying was a problem that educators had to deal with much more often in recent times. “It’s so insidious, because it’s 24/7. “A lot of issues are what happens out of school.” Dr Hunter said that fostering good interpersonal relationships was another big part of life at the school, including a peer support program where year 10 students are paired with a year 7 student for guidance and friendship.

YOUR HEALTH

GARDEN HINTS

When you’re unwell, but pathology tests are OK

Marmalade bush

YOU are not well, but your doctor has run test after test and can’t find anything wrong. The reason is simple. Most of the tests your doctor may request are blood (serum) tests. The blood is one of the most important areas of the human body, so your body will try to keep it perfect for as long as it is able. Your body will attempt to fix itself by clearing wastes, irritations and infections through other fluids and organs FIRST to spare the blood from problems. We call this the “malfunction” stage. Here are the common body areas that show early “malfunctions”: * Urine (it may become darker, smellier, more acidic) * Saliva (may become acidic or thicker with mucous) * Joints or muscles (may hurt more, cramp or ache) * Stool (may get looser, smellier, change color) * Skin (may show rashes, itchiness, and irritation) * Hot/cold sensations (pulse changes to move blood to pumps and filters) * Tongue (coated, patchy, dry – shows early changes in digestive organs)

WITH MICHELLE COSE, ND NATUROPATH

TIP OF THE TONGUE: Changes in the surface of your tongue can indicate certain types of health problems.

Naturopaths go back over early signs and symptoms and will test and observe these changes to find what is malfunctioning. We also use this to check a patient’s health when maintaining wellness. Scans such as x-ray, CT, MRI are used to find growths, cancers and blockages which patients often call “worst case scenario” so when these come back clear it is a very good sign. Blood tests within normal range are a good sign for the patient too.

So next time your energy drops, you bloat and feel discomfort, have a flu or cold and are blocked with mucous, your body aches, have headaches, fever, rashes, coated tongue, coldness or just feel unwell AND your tests are clear – it may be a malfunction and there are other investigations that can find out why. When a patient tells us, “I’m sure I’m not making this up,” they most often aren’t – after all, who wants to be unwell!

THE yellow, orange and red flowers of the Marmalade bush make it one of the brightest flowering plants in the garden. The trumpet-shaped flowers hang in clusters from the tips of the branches, gradually changing from yellow, then deepening to orange and red as they age, hence the common name. The Marmalade bush is also known as Browallia, as its botanical name was once Browallia jamesonii, but has been renamed Streptosolen jamesonii. Strepto means twisted in Greek and solen means tube and refers to the flowers shape. Streptosolen jamesonii is an evergreen shrub which originated in South America. It is easy to grow, being drought tolerant once established and only needing an occasional prune. They grow to around 1 -2 metres high and are members of the solanaceae plant family, which also includes yesterday-today-and-tomorrow, potato vine, tomato, capsicum and potato. This pretty evergreen bush flowers through the warmer months. The long, flexible branches arch under the weight of the clusters of flowers. The one in our garden has been flowering from September and is still producing a few flowers, which the birds

WITH DEBBI GIBSON, HORTICULTURALIST

and butterflies love. Even when not in flower it is still an attractive plant with small, glossy green, ribbed leaves. Streptosolen can be lightly pruned at the end of summer when flowering has finished. The older canes can also be removed. Because of its naturally spreading habit, Streptosolen can be trained against a wall or even up a pillar or archway, over a wall or fence or left to spread in a garden bed. It can also be kept as a neat shrub with regular trimming. Grow them in a sunny position; the more sun the more flowers. They do well in most soils provided it drains well. They can be propagated from semi hardwood cuttings in autumn and winter or soft-tip cuttings in late spring and summer. As well as the traditional favorite, there is also a yellow flowered version of Streptosolen and a dwarf cultivar, ‘Ginger Meggs’ which only grows to a metre high. Happy gardening.

Tetanus trouble

MANY horse owners have heard of tetanus, however many still do not have their horses vaccinated against this deadly disease! Tetanus is a bacterial disease caused by Clostridium tetani. The bacteria is found in the soil where it can survive for long periods of time, it then enters the horse through a wound. The bacteria grow best where there is little oxygen, hence why deeper wounds are more likely to result in a tetanus infection. The bacteria produce a neurotoxin, affecting the nerves and causing the muscles to contract resulting in the rigidity that the disease is known for. Signs of infection develop from one to three weeks after the bacteria enter the body and progression to death occurs within a few days. The first symptoms of tetanus can be simply abnormal behavior, followed by muscle stiffness, particularly of the tail and ears. Protrusion of the third eyelids is another characteristic sign often noted early in the disease process. The condition is very difficult to treat, and even with the best of care, many horses do not survive. Vaccination against tetanus is highly effective and consists of two vaccinations a

SCHOOL STRATEGIES: Beechworth Secondary School principal, Dr John Hunter, pictured with students (from left) Madeline Rochow, Isaak Haebich and Kurt Piko, said the school has a number of strategies to combat bullying.

tools was an important step. “It all comes down to knowing how to use it and what to do,” Issak said. For Kurt Piko, another member of the peer support program, being closer in age to the fellow students he is supporting was helpful. “We don’t seem like a teacher, we’re just friends,” he said. “We’re just another friend to them, but also we are able to help them out, we know what to do.”

TIPS TO HELP DEAL WITH BULLYING, INCLUDING CYBERBULLYING: Speak out about it – talk to someone trustworthy about what you are going through. Know that you are not alone and where to find support, whether it be from counsellors, family members, or even sources such as mental health hotlines. Distance yourself from technology and question whether it is helpful to your wellbeing to be online at the particular time – have some time off from the internet and figure out ways to modify your use if necessary. Take advantage of programs designed to support you, at your school or in your community.

“It’s a good point of reference for the younger kids to have,” he said. The school’s wellbeing coordinator, Mel Ivone, agreed that the nature of bullying had evolved with technology, and she tries to instil good coping strategies in students. She said young people not only faced bullying comments on social media, they often could become insecure and upset by comparing their lives to the “perfect” portrayal of other people’s lives online. Her work builds strong relationships with students, offers support for a range of issues from bullying to family issues, stress, grief and health issues, and helps to remove the stigma of mental illness. “We educate them about their feelings, and how to deal with those feelings,” Ms Ivone said. “It’s about education, it’s about skills for life.” Year 10 student Maddy Rochow said being involved in the program with year 7 has helped her widen her social circle, and she feels good about providing support. “I think it’s good that the year sevens have people they can go to,” she said. Fellow student and peer leader Isaak Haebich said he felt “a sense of pride in the steps that we’ve taken”. He said that the online world could be a double edged sword for young people, but having the right

month apart followed by an annual booster. It is a good idea to then give further tetanus toxoid vaccinations when deep wounds occur. If your horse has a deep wound and has not previously been vaccinated it should be administered a tetanus antitoxin immediately and commence a regular vaccination protocol. The antitoxin provides short term protection, at the most three weeks, and so it is important to realise that this alone is insufficient to fully protect your horse. There are other conditions that your horse may also need to be vaccinated against, so choose a time of year and remember to give your horse regular boosters! CATCH OF THE WEEK

FISHING FOCUS

A few bites in mid autumn BY ROB ALEXANDER, WANGARATTA APRIL never ceases to amaze me. Every year something different. Some years dry and cold, some years damp and humid. This year is the latter, damp and humid. With the rain we have had the local rivers have all seen fluctuations in water level and clarity. Despite this there have still been a few Murray cod caught in most rivers. I fished the King River with Brett Corker one evening last week where we found the water a little higher and quite off color, and much cooler than it has been. We managed to catch two small cod on lures. We had to work very hard for the two fish we caught, it was not easy going. There are still a few fish taking lures in the rivers, but you need to be prepared to persist and persevere. Impatient anglers should

just head to Lake Mulwala where they are biting much better. Young Will O’Connor from Beechworth has been catching heaps of trout. Exactly where he has been catching them I could not tell you, and if I asked him I am quite positive he would be reluctant to tell me, and I don’t blame him because the trout populations in the streams are so low at the moment that the good fishing spots are being kept as very closely guarded secrets. Will is a great kid, and an absolute guru fisherman and it does not surprise me that he has been able to sniff a few trout out. So there are trout out there somewhere folks, but you’re going to have to do the groundwork to find exactly where they are. I will tell you that the Kiewa River upstream of Tawonga caravan park has a reasonable population, and the Mitta Mitta River upstream of Eskdale has been fishing quite well for the trout, but as for the smaller waterways, I suggest you switch on your fish radar and go looking.

Tax reform and your business THE Federal Government has asked the Board of Taxation to conduct a fast track review of the impediments in the tax system that unreasonably affect small business. Steven Ciobo, Parliamentary Secretary to Treasury, said the new review, whilst operating with an initial focus on “impediments” within the tax system, will also be an opportunity to compile and prioritise areas for future reform. As the review is being “fast tracked”, some results should be seen as early as August. Mr Ciobo claims this is feasible, given the Board of Taxation has extensive links with tax professionals, including CPA Australia and Taxpayers Australia, key representative groups and its own bank of existing work. Taxpayers Australia’s head of taxation, Mark Chapman, said he welcomed the review and focus on small business, given key small business tax breaks had been lost as part of the government’s package to get rid of the mining tax. Whilst I read last week that Julie Bishop said the government has no intention of increasing the rate of GST to raise revenue, a speech delivered last Wednesday evening by the Treasury Secretary hinted just that. Both the Prime Minister and his Treasurer spent the entire election campaign never entirely ruling out an expanded GST, as they shouldn’t have. It is no good having any sort of taxation review, if the review they are about to undertake is not allowed to examine all aspects of our taxation system. The National Commission of Audit has already suggested an expanded GST, which I understand has been with the Treasurer for some six weeks. At 10 per cent, Australia’s GST is low by international standards. New Zealand started at 10 and went to

By KEN CLARKE, WANGARATTA CERTIFIED PRACTICING ACCOUNTANT

kclarke@alphalink.com.au 12.5 and is now 15 per cent; the UK began at 10 and is now 20; Germany is 19 per cent, France 19.6 per cent and China 17 per cent. Federal Treasury boss Martin Parkinson has said the alternative to broadening or lifting our GST is to leave it alone and abandon the semi-regular income tax cuts we have come to expect if we are ever to return to surplus. Dr Parkinson recently outlined an appalling budget outlook in which there would be no return to surplus in the next decade, even if inflation was allowed to push up the average tax rate on full-time workers from 23 to 28 per cent. As an older Australian, I shudder when I read that the National Disability Insurance Scheme and school reform funding will add $3.1 billion and $2.8 billion to total spending over the forward estimates with the net cost to the Commonwealth of the NDIS to be $11.3 billion per annum by 2023-2024. And what about health? By the year 2023-2024 it is anticipated that Commonwealth expenditure on health will be $116 billion, up from a nominal $64.7 billion now. So let the review being, with a fight for lower corporate tax rates for small business, simplified income tax and GST reporting for small businesses, increased tax breaks for capital investments and the re-introduction of loss carry backs for small business. My concern with all this is the already reluctance of conforming to GST, and an increase will make more people try and find ways of beating the system, as I know of no-one who is in favor of this form of raising revenue.

2012 Sangiovese Around $25.00 THEY say you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone, and it certainly is the case when your digital television signal drops out during the last 15 minutes of an SBS art house movie. After investing two hours of our lives in a flick that received multiple awards at Sundance or Toronto or wherever, yet made no sense at all, the telly went blank just before the pay off. It was hard enough that it all happened in the dark so you didn’t know who anyone was, and it might as well have been in a foreign language for all you could make out from the mumbling. But we persisted because everyone said it was a masterpiece and now we’ll never know why. At least it was an opportunity to have a laugh, sink our teeth into some piping hot pizza and indulge in some local Sangiovese on movie night.

WITH ANITA McPHERSON This King River Estate Sangiovese is made in the King Valley winery where sustainable farming practices are employed to produce an earthy red wine with a ripe cherry and lightly smoky bouquet, and deep flavors of wild blackberry, raspberry and savory tobacco. It’s kind of fleshy in the mouth with plenty of length in the flavor, providing a lot of satisfaction from a wine which is well suited for long dinners, late nights and spicy flavors. I’m not sure it matters I missed the end of the movie, as it usually arrives when you least expect it anyway, but I won’t be the one who misses out on the last glass of Sangiovese. Wangaratta Football Club, 1910 AT a meeting at the Albion Hotel, Mr A Callander was elected president of the new Wangaratta Football Club. There was a good deal of discussion about reforming the Ovens and King Association. The following month, at a meeting of the club at the Commercial Hotel, with Mr Callander in the chair, it was decided that the colors of the club should be black and white, and that training should be Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and night. Mrs Umhaeur, the licensee of the Commercial, placed a room at the disposal of the club.

When the meat is falling of the bone and the split peas have turned to mush, remove the ham hocks and let cool slightly, shred the meat discarding the bones and skin and any unwanted pieces, remove the bay leaves, then add the frozen peas and a splash of water if too thick, return to the heat and taste, season if required.

Ingredients > 250gm green split peas (soaked overnight) > 2 ham hocks > 2 onions (roughly chopped) > 2 carrots diced into medium sized squares > 2 celery sticks (roughly chopped) > 2 tablespoons of olive oil > 2 bay leaves > 350gm frozen peas

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

WE are starting to get dark earlier and colder mornings. Autumn is here and winter is not far away. Time to get the soup recipes out, this is one of my favourite soups and I find all I need is some bread and our delicious salted butter and I have a good meal. I love one pot dinners, after a long day it’s nice to have a hearty meal waiting in the fridge to come home to. I have added frozen peas to give a colour lift and a lovely burst of flavor when you bite into them, but you can leave them out if you want to. Method Put olive oil in a very large pan over a medium heat, sauté onions, and celery and then carrots, until onions are translucent, add ham hocks and 2 litres of water or enough to cover, add bay leaves, and bring to the boil. Do not season the soup until the end. Reserve the frozen peas for later. Reduce to a simmer and cook for 1½
